Examples Of Galvanism In Frankenstein
Galvanism refers to the therapeutic practice of electrical currents to produce a chemical reaction.
Victor Frankenstein applies this idea to create his own "race" of beings. Victor Frankenstein

Most recently, breakthroughs in the modification of human anatomy have been introduced into
society. Scientists have discovered ways to modify human genetics and anatomy, as well as making
entirely new entities. Stem cells are specialized cells designed to prevent deficiencies or other
diseases. Mayoclinic describe stem cells as beneficial to humanity, as they can "...mature into cells
in bones, heart muscle, nerves, and other organs and tissue, researchers and doctors may better
understand how diseases and conditions develop." (Mayoclinic Staff, Increase understanding of our
diseases occur). Modern–day scientists use stem cells to perfect humanity, causing a healthier and
more productive society. Scientists obtain stem cells through embryos and adult tissue, such as bone
marrow. Furthermore, scientists have discovered new ways to multiply identical entities through
cloning. The National Humane Genome Research institute describes cloning as " a number of
different processes that can be used to produce genetically identical copies of a biological entity. The
copied material, which has the same genetic makeup as the original, is referred to as a clone"
(NHGRI, What is Cloning?) Scientists can modify a clone to benefit humanity. The NHGRI
explains that "researchers who cloned Dolly have cloned other sheep that have been genetically

Cancer Diagnosis Subsides: A Case Study
One the initial shock of a cancer diagnosis subsides, it's time to focus on choosing the best treatment
option. Your oncologist is the best source of information about the optimal way to treat your cancer,
but it's always wise to understand all the options so you can make the best choice possible. This
overview will explain the basics and is an excellent stepping stone into more in depth research of the
treatments that interest you.
Surgery
Depending on the type and location of the cancer, removing it surgically is sometimes an option.
When possible, surgeons remove the entire tumor and some surrounding tissue to ensure that all of
the cancer cells are removed. If the cancer is located in a vital organ, the surgeon may remove part
of that organ or simply remove some of the tumor to make it smaller. A smaller tumor will respond
better to other treatment methods than a large one. In late–stage cancers, surgery is sometimes used
to alleviate the pain a tumor is causing, improving the patient's quality of life.

Chemotherapy and radiation both work be destroying rapidly growing cancer cells. Chemotherapy
does this by sending medication throughout the entire body. Radiation therapy targets the cancer
cells more directly, but is sometimes sent throughout the body as well. When it is, the radiation is
more likely to make its way into the cancer cells without affecting other tissues. Unfortunately, these
treatments both kill some healthy cells, causing some unpleasant side effects. Targeted therapy is
sometimes a better option. Although considered a form of chemotherapy, targeted therapy uses
chemicals that attack only certain parts of a call rather than the entire entity. This allows the
medication to target only the cancer cells that contain these anomalies while avoiding healthy

The Stardust Revolution by Jacob Berkowitz
In his book, "The Stardust Revolution", Jacob Berkowitz extrapolates that we are currently
witnessing the nascent of the next scientific revolution, the Stardust Revolution, where we are
discovering that our evolutionary story does not begin on Earth but rather the stars. The Stardust
Revolution is born from applying chemistry and biology to astronomy thus creating an entire new
scientific field. These leaders in the field, astrochemists and astrobiologists, have stumbled upon
layers of evidence that support the idea that everything in the universe is genetically related to
everything else in the universe, breaking boundaries of archaic paradigms regarding evolution and
the cosmos. Berkowitz believes that everything in the universe has the same origin and that there is
indeed a way to follow the breadcrumbs and trace these links from our physically limited position
on earth.
There are two concepts that I found particularly fascinating that Berkowitz explores. The first
concept is revolves around how elements are made and forged by stars, a new and bold idea that was
unveiled by technology such as spectroscopy and the discovery of radioactivity. The second concept
pertains to how these elements that are forged by stars have ultimately evolved to create life here on
earth and possibly elsewhere in the universe. Evolution in itself is a controversial subject but
Berkowitz takes it one step further, off of the boundaries of our Earth and into the mysterious
heavenly bodies.

Animal Testing Problem
This article sums up the fact that we should move away from, but not completely get rid of animal
testing. Since about the 1950's until 2013 the public support of animal testing has dropped about
33%. That number is expected to continually drop with younger generations, not just because of
compassion and ethics, but because of the scientific community striving for improvement. One of
the main problems with animal testing is that while humans and other animals may be similar, they
are not the same. Because of this, side effects are missed, money is wasted, and still, there is only an
8% chance of a new chemical entity being approved for humans. Even with such a small percentage,
animal testing is still required. To break away from animal testing

Multiple Governments and Intergovernmental Relationships
The founding fathers created the constitution, outlaying the branches of government and clarifying
their roles and responsibilities, providing a checks and balances system. It is comprised of three
branches, the Executive Branch, the Legislative Branch, and the Judicial Branch. Each state, city
and county has its own constitution that outlines the levels of local government. In the beginning,
the idea was to create a government that could efficiently establish laws and enforce them, but also

Disadvantages of intergovernmental Relationships Conversely, there are disadvantages to multiple
government relationships. This relationship can sometimes bring about conflict of authority and
confusion regarding which regulations to follow. For example, the move toward legalizing
marijuana, while marijuana is illegal to the federal government, each state can vote and implement
its own policy regarding legalizing it from the local level. This creates a gray area due to the fact
that people living in these states can be prosecuted federally for the distribution and use of
marijuana despite the fact that it is legal in their state. Secondly, the interdependent boundaries and
relationships between federal and state governments, can lead to passing the buck or lack of
accountability in regard to handling the country's affairs. Hurricane Katrina was a prime example of
how this relationship can be a failure to the people. During this trying time, the citizens of New
Orleans were made to suffer behind the bickering of the federal and local agencies playing the
blame game, while failing to come up with a solution to the problems and admitting that there was a
failure in policy to handle such devastation. Lastly, federalism may encourage regionalism, creating
an uneven spread

Fracking Argumentative Essay
There is no doubt that fracking is an extremely dangerous way of obtaining energy. "Fracking is the
process of drilling down into the earth before a high–pressure water mixture is directed at the rock
to release the gas inside. Water, sand and chemicals are injected into the rock at high pressure which
allows the gas to flow out to the head of the well" ("What Is Fracking"). Although fracking provides
everyone with needed resources, it also results in life changing consequences. Therefore, fracking
must be eliminated and research needs to be done in order to come up with new ways of obtaining
the energy/resources needed in order for all entities to survive. In short, the precautionary principle
must be used to ensure that safe and proper actions are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
However, no one was warned about the issues that may occur because of fracking. For instance,
many individuals water supply became contaminated without their knowledge and they became
extremely ill from drinking their water. Sadly, some of these illnesses resulted in tragic deaths.
Moreover, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health discovered that "preterm births were
40 percent higher among women who lived in areas of intense drilling and fracking operations, and
these women's pregnancies were 30 percent more likely to be considered high risk" (Page,
Samantha). Fracking is not only hurting living individuals, but preexisting ones as well. What's
more, there are many other connections between fracking and tragic occurrences, thus, fracking
must be terminated. Truthfully, it is difficult to say whether or not these issues occurred because of
lack of initial research or because fracking companies felt as though they invested too much to stop
fracking when issues arose. No matter the reason, it is now known that fracking is dangerous,
therefore, new ways of obtaining energy/resources must take

Case Studies : Contracts, Business, And Laws
Case Studies Analyses
Contracts, business, and laws are three simple little words, but when put together they have a
substantial impact on our everyday lives. Below we will discuss three case studies. The first case is
between Chris, Matt, and Ian vs. Donald Margolin, who was injured when he used an aftershave
lotion that he bought off the internet called Funny Face. The second case is between Sam, his
landlord, and a national chain store. Sam is being accused of conducting business from his
apartment and going back on a verbal promise. In the last case is two lifelong friends who decided
to join in a partnership and open up a sporting goods shop. Therefore, before the appropriate court
can proceed with the first case, the court should take into several considerations around the rules of
jurisdiction, alternative dispute resolution (ADR), and whether or not corporation/or corporate
offices can be held for the criminal or potential act. In the second case before the court can rule the
court should determine the various elements of a valid contract, if a quasi–contract exists, a
promissory estoppel, and the rights an obligation of a tenant would prevail on Sam 's claims. Finally,
in the third case between Jeb and Josh, they should determine the type of business entity that will
overall protect their business and personal needs.
Case Study One
In the first case, personal jurisdiction is one of the two forms of jurisdictions that a court must
consider before hearing a case.

The Between India And India Essay
Final Paper After World War II, the widespread implementation of colonial rule was ended and
widespread post–colonial self–governance began. These fledgling states were mostly provided with
a framework for governance that was left over from the previous colonial rule. The Parliament of
India largely mirrors that of England, and this creates fundamental issues within the governance and
creation of a new state, especially one with India's population. An already established style of
governance has ways of being manipulated by outside forces that have been working within these
frameworks for decades, possibly even a century or more, namely private corporations. When a
private corporation effects a government in their own self interest, the corporate entity generally
externalizes all risk to the governmental body and the public. In many cases, government
intervention in the form of regulation or deregulation can allow for a trans–national corporate entity
to exploit laws and operate in an unethical, but legal manner. In 1956, the nine year old Indian
government passed the Companies Act of 1956, requiring, "affiliates of foreign companies to
register as separate companies under Indian Law and imposes limits on foreign investment and
participation in all Indian companies" (Peterson 2). Union Carbide, an American multi–national
chemical conglomerate, wholly owned its Indian subsidiary and after the passage of the Companies
Act. Union Carbide was required to reduce its ownership of

prescription must also include, at a minimum, criteria on which each alternative resource can be
judged on each resource characteristic. Some terminologies, such as 'top management skills' or
innovatory capacity means little without being specific about the activities and processes that

tacit knowledge in bestowing competitive advantage under RBV perspective.

Dark Ages Universe
Several hundred thousands years after the Big Bang, the stars began to light up the dark universe. As
the universe expanded, it got colder and darker and less like a place that might produce things like
heavier chemicals, plants, and animals. This period of the history of the universe was called the
Dark Ages. During the Dark Ages, a lot of atoms was flowing through space, which contained 75%
hydrogen with one portion and about 25% helium with two protons. Some areas in the universe
were just slightly hotter and denser than others, and gravity magnified those differences. As gravity
increased, the whole thing was clumping faster. At the center of each of those clouds of atoms,
atoms began to bang into each other more violently and heat up particularly ... Show more content

When stars died, chemicals other than hydrogen and helium formed, which led to the next level of
complexity–Heavier Chemical Element. Most stars spent about 90% of their life over billions of
years on during protons and hydrogen nuclei into helium nuclei. When they run out of fuel, the
furnace at the center of the star stopped supporting the star, and gravity took over. Small stars did
not have much pressure at the center. They burned hydrogen slowly over billions of years at
relatively low temperatures. When they died, they would slowly fade away. However, great stars had
so much mass that they can create enormous pressures and temperature, and when the giant stars ran
out of hydrogen, the temperature got cranked up even higher, which led the star to collapse. The
high temperature that the collapse caused was able to make helium nuclei fuse into nuclei of carbon.
When a star used up its helium, it collapsed again, and the cycle started over. The star heated up and
began to fuse carbon to form

Theodor Adorno And The Culture Industry
INTRODUCTION Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer are the social Thinkers behind the term

large impact created. A chemical reaction is a process that involves the rearrangement of the
molecular and ionic structure of a substance when the interaction of two or more chemicals is
compounded to create a new substance (Middle School Chemistry, 2015). An example of a chemical
reaction is when a bike begins to rust or when photosynthesis takes place (Uen.org, 2015). The
different types of Molars used in the experiment affected the speed of the reactions of the acid.
These times varied on the amount of concentration used in the molars. This was shown in the results
of the experiment as the 2Molar gave an average time of 23.88 seconds, for the water to decrease to
30 ml in the test tube. The 1Molar gave an average 54.94 seconds to reach 30 ml of water in the test
tube, and the 0.5Molar displayed an average time of 3 minutes 13 seconds to reach 30 mL.

Advantages And Disadvantages Of Excicessing
Pharmaceutical Excipients Coprocessing
Nowadays, there is an increasing demand on multifunctional excipients that replaces the need and
use of multiple excipients. There are two ways that can fulfill this requirement, first, the
development of new excipients with new chemical entity that has good properties including stability,
flowability, compressibility, etc... and is compatible with other excipients in the formulation and
with the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API). The second way is to make new grades of exisiting
excipient, or to modify it in a way that meets the needs of development. Excipient modifications can
be categorized into chemical and physical modifications. The chemical modification deals with
chemical reaction that add, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Table 1 shows the general advantages and disadvantages of coprocessing. As shown in the table, if
an excipient has certain limitation such as poor flowability and compressibility, coprocessing could
be the solution to overcome this problem. On the other hand, coprocessed excipients ratio is fixed
and can't be changed. Sometimes this ratio may be incompatible with the API or with the dose [2].
In general, coprocessing is carried out for one plastic and one brittle–deforming excipient in order to
minimize the elastic energy stored during compression and to decrease capping or lamination of the
tablet, in addition, this combination is reflected positively on the compressibility of the powder.
Coprocessed excipient use in direct compression tablet manufacturing process combines the
advantages of wet granulation with the fast processing of direct compression[6]. As mentioned
above, the ratio of initial excipients included in the coprocessed excipient is fixed, the particles of
the excipient with the lower percentage can be processed on the surface or in the core of the other
excipient. Excipients must be homogenized and then coprocessed

National Intelligence Reform And Terrorism Prevention Act...
Homeland Security is the intersection of evolving threats and hazards with traditional government
and its responsibilities for civil defense emergency response law enforcement, customs border
control and immigration. Moreover, the term "enterprise" is a national effort that refers to the
collective efforts and shared responsibilities of federal, state local, tribal, territorial,
nongovernmental and private–sector partners as well as individuals ( U.S. Department of Homland
Security, 2010). Since the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, the concept of National
Intelligence was arranged by the Intelligence Reform and Terrorism Prevention Act of 2004. As that
was formulated, the IC community was known to be more coordinated and effective. The Act also
made it possible for the integration of domestic and foreign dimensions of us intelligence to
eliminate gaps and understanding national security threats. Also, this brought about the mission of
the Department of Homeland Security and future capabilities of the department (Noftsinger, 2007).
In any organization it is imperative that higher management assess progress from the start of a
program to the current state and what can happen in the future. Many Americans can recall that
Department of Homeland Security is one of the most significant changes in the federal government.
It can be compared to the creation of the Department of Defense after the Second World War. The
beginning of Homeland Security was a challenge due

What Is The Effects Of Signaling Heterogeneity On Targeted...
To investigate the effects of signaling heterogeneity on targeted therapy outcomes, we develop an
integrated approach of in vitro experiments and three different mathematical models, intracellular
signaling network model, cell population growth model, and hybrid cellular automata model,
proceeded as follows. First, we develop an intracellular signaling network model. We construct
simplified cancer–signaling pathway based on prior information about the pathway and
experimentally perturb the pathway by various kinase inhibitors. The model defines protein activity
or cell viability as a weighted sum of its neighbors, where each weight indicates interaction strength
between two nodes in the pathway. It is worth noting that network nodes ... Show more content on

We also assume that the number of initial cell population in a treated condition is the same as one in
an untreated control condition. Then cell viability is written as a function of growth rates and time.
We consider the same time scale of our cell viability assay in our experiments. Here, we defined
tumor and stroma region explicitly based on an image of lung adenocarcinoma patient tissue. Tumor
region contains cancer cells. Since not all proteins in cancer cells are directly measurable due to
experimental limitation, many players and intermediate proteins in the pathway are not included in
our study. For this reason, an interaction between two proteins is not necessarily representing direct
interaction. Rather, it represents diverse and abstract influence of one entity to other entity in steady
state, where an entity can be a microenvironmental variable, intracellular protein, or cell viability.
As a result, we believe our manuscript is now more accessible to broader audience.
We now present core idea of three different mathematical modeling approaches upfront in
introduction. We also provide more explicit and clearer explanation of each modeling strategy in
mathematical modeling section. To avoid confusion our signaling model with kinetic modeling
approaches, we changed Figure 1–2, which now emphasize model fitting to various perturbation
conditions not time. We also emphasize what interaction weights mean in our modeling framework.

Persuasive Essay Gmo
Our world is full of complications, situations that need people's attention. Scientists are attempting
to find answers for most of the world's difficulties. Nevertheless, a solution for one problem creates
some other obstacle. It becomes impossible to create a solution that does not have side effects. One
of the difficult situations in this world is hunger and poverty. Many people lack enough food to live
a healthy life, especially in developing and underdeveloped countries. In order to provide sufficient
food and maintain food security, scientists discovered genetically altered foods. Genetically
engineered foods are grown from plants or animals whose genes are modified by inserting new
genes that can increase the plant's and animal's resistance to diseases and worms. By doing so,
researchers improve crop yield and animal products. In addition to increasing the amount of food
produced, scientists enhance the nutritive content of crops by using biotechnology, which results in
reducing malnutrition. Furthermore, some investigators claim the environmental importance of ...

The issue of producing and consuming genetically altered foods is controversial. Changing the
natural content of plants and animals has negative impacts. For instance, genetically altering the
DNA of plants or animals have a possibility to create allergens into a food, which results in allergic
reactions. Environmentally, genetically modified crops have disadvantages. Plants can be modified
to be pesticides and herbicide tolerant. Hence, when plants are sprayed with chemicals, those
chemicals contaminate the surroundings. Besides, the chemicals are toxic to some pollinators, this
results in the reduction of pollinators, which contributes to the decrease in genetic diversity in crops.
The reduction in genetic diversity of plants disrupts the

Bayer Monsanto Vertical Integration
Consolidation already drives many farmers out of business and restricts many from even entering
the market. Although many farms in the US are small, most food produced and consumed in the
U.S. is produced by relatively very few farms. In 2012, a small 4 percent of farms produced 66
percent of all our food. Combine that with large corporate control of food manufacturing and it isn't
hard so see that the many levels of the ag industry are being controlled by large corporate entities
which gives them lots of market power. Although most people only think new and small–time
farmers will be heavily impacted by consolidation, even large farmers have to focus on commodity
crops because of these mega firms. The consolidation of more than the seed industry within
agriculture has created these barriers to entry. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Much higher than many young and aspiring farmers can afford, corporate farming is likely become
even more predominant than it currently is. The Bayer–Monsanto combo will create substantial
vertical integration between seed traits, seeds, and crop chemicals. The result of vertical integration
will likely make seed prices even higher for farmers. The seed producers will make "package deals"
where you have to buy a specific seed with their patented chemical spray and etc. This creates even
less crop variability and choices for crop producers. Due to the vertical integration, smaller

Paragenetic Carcinogen Research Paper
Epigenetic (paragenetic) carcinogens A substantial and growing number of carcinogens have
structures, including that of their metabolites, that do not suggest a likely electrophilic reactant.
These agents have been inactive or yielded equivocal results in short–term assays for genotoxicity
(Upton et al, 1984). The formation of adducts in DNA by such carcinogens, which is the definitive
evidence of DNA reactivity has not been found in cells of the target tissues using sensitive
techniques (Williams, 1980; Whysner et al, 1998). In addition to the absence of DNA–reactivity,
such carcinogens have been demonstrated to exert other primary cellular effects in their target
tissues that could account for their carcinogenicity (Klaunig et al, 2000). Effects of this type include
neoplasm promotion, cytotoxicity and increased cell proliferation. In the endocrine and immune
systems, chemicals affecting function of these tissues can lead to tumor development (Capen, ....).
These effects do not involve reaction with DNA and hence are epigenetic or paragenetic. It is
important to note that carcinogens for which an effect that could be the basis of carcinogenicity has
not been reasonably established, remain unclassified because absence of genotoxicity is not

Terrorism Vulnerability Assessments
Vulnerability assessments on terrorism were designed to establish any loopholes in a security system
that are prone to harm or attack by a person who may have intentions to harm a particular location,
an event or an individual. The main goal of terrorism vulnerability assessments is to establish the
weaknesses of facilities across a variety of probable threats. Once such threats are assessed, physical
and operational measures of improvement are put in place so as to make sure that such facilities are
adequately protected. Such assessments can be administered to a vast range of facilities ranging
from existing site management and new construction design over the life of service of such
structures. This paper will delve into critical vulnerability assessment of three locations. The first
location being Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden City, the Benjamin Franklin Bridge and lastly

Varroa Mites Research Paper
The rapid decline in the population of bees cannot be derived from a single factor. Like many
environmental problems, the summation of several factors give rise to the problem that is the
possibility of the extinction of bees. Although there may be a number of popular ideas about why
bees' populations are on the decline, some stand out above others. Things like parasites, chemicals,
habitat destruction and changes, and reproduction issues all contribute significantly to a decline in
the population of bees across the globe. Varroa mites originate from Asia were first introduced in
America through Florida in the mid 1980's. The Varroa mites are parasites which feed on the blood
of bees. These mites transmit various diseases and viruses to the bee colonies that they infect. The
also develop alongside bee larvae and lay their eggs in cells in the hive that contain developing baby

This is a positive effect since almost all of our oil and energy comes from foreign entities. With this
method, we can now supply a greater amount of our own energy and become more self–sufficient.
With more wells being opened there comes more employment opportunities, from the drilling site to
the transportation of products. The increase of natural gas production has started a decline in the
consumption of coal energy. The drop in the burning of coal produces less carbon dioxide (CO2).
Natural gas produces about half of the CO2 than that of coal making it a better choice.

The Widget: The Definition Of Life
A glance in the Merriam Webster English dictionary offers twenty definitions for the word "life."
These range in scope from theological context "spiritual existence transcending physical death"
(Life 4) to the obvious "the period from birth to death" (Life 5a), but all assume the reader already
understands what form life takes and its qualities. In response to these assumptions, there must be an
objective definition of life that establishes what features and qualities all things considered alive
possess. This definition should concisely determine what differences exist between a tree and a
wooden door that results in the first being alive and the latter inanimate. Ultimately, this distinction
is contingent on three categories of qualities: energy, reproduction, and molecular makeup.

Reproduction, among most living creatures, is less about enjoying the miracle of life with a
significant other and more about fulfilling the instinctual duty of ensuring a specie's continuation.
Life without reproduction is akin to an ice cream cone in July: it will not last long. As such, the
definition of life necessitates the inclusion of reproduction. Like metabolism, reproduction comes in
many forms. Some of the most basic prokaryotic organisms reproduce asexually. Asexual
reproduction involves the replication of genetic material, and then an even division into two "new"
individuals (Reece 1014). This method of reproduction, also known as mitosis, is also used in
eukaryotic cells to regenerate cells within tissues or organs. An issue surrounding this form of
reproduction is the lack of genetic variability. As it involves only one parent, the new generation has
the exact same genetic sequence as the original generation (Reece

Drugs
In pharmacology, a pharmaceutical drug, also called a medication or medicine, is a chemical
substance used to treat, cure, prevent, or diagnose a disease or to promote well–being. Traditionally
drugs were obtained through extraction from medicinal plants, but more recently also by organic
synthesis. Pharmaceutical drugs may be used for a limited duration, or on a regular basis for chronic
disorders. Pharmaceutical drugs are often classified into groups of related drugs that have similar
chemical structures, the same mechanism of action, a related mode of action, and that are used to
treat the same disease. The Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical Classification System (ATC), the
most widely used drug classification system, assigns drugs a unique ATC code. Another major
classification system is the Biopharmaceutics Classification System. This classifies drugs according
to their solubility and permeability or absorption properties.
Medicinal chemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry is a branch of chemistry, especially synthetic
organic chemistry, various other biological specialties, or bio–active molecules. Compounds used as
medicines are most often organic compounds, which are often divided into the broad classes of
small organic molecules like atorvastatin and fluticasone. Inorganic and organ metallic compounds
are also useful as drugs. These compounds include lithium carbonate and gallium. In particular,

Genetic Engineering And Gene Therapy
Genetic engineering and Gene Therapy
Introduction:
The cell structure of an individual or other organism have parts called "genes" that control the
concoction responses in the cell that make it develop and capacity and at last focus the development

these lines the parents pass on specific characteristics to their children.
Gene therapy and genetic engineering are two nearly related innovations that include changing the

Descartes Mind-Body Dualism Argument Analysis
In Descartes letters to Elisabeth, Descartes states that the non–material soul can act on the material
body and vice versa. He also says that they are two distinct beings that form a union during
someone's life, where they can control one another. Elisabeth states that this is false and that by the
laws of physics, a soul cannot be both non–physical and able to act on a material entity. I would
have to agree with Elisabeth in this argument. Descartes describes our soul as our thoughts and
intellect and our body is as just the physical part of us. So the soul is our thoughts, memories, and
personality. He takes belief in the concept of "mind–body dualism." "He (Descartes) reaches this
conclusion by arguing that the nature of the mind (that is, a thinking, non–extended thing) is

Solid waste like bags, foam, and other items dumped into the oceans from land or by ships at sea are
frequently consumed, with often fatal effects, by marine mammals, fish, and birds that mistake it for
food.
Ocean currents corral trillions of decomposing plastic items and other trash into gigantic, swirling
garbage patches (Pacific Trash Vortex)
Fish and birds could be harmed from accidentally eating the plastic particles, or absorbing
substances that leach out into the water. The main problem is the accessibility to freshwater
organisms that can be easily confused as natural food.
IV – Pollution Facts:
The average American will throw away approximately 185 pounds of plastic per year.
8% of the world's oil is used for plastic production.
Plastic in the ocean breaks down into such small segments that pieces of plastic from a one liter
bottle could end up on every mile of beach throughout the world.
Approximately 380 billion plastic bags are used in the United States every year. That's more than
1,200 bags per US resident, per year.
80% of pollution to the marine environment comes from the land.

Examples Of Galvanism In Frankenstein

  • 1. Examples Of Galvanism In Frankenstein Galvanism refers to the therapeutic practice of electrical currents to produce a chemical reaction. Victor Frankenstein applies this idea to create his own "race" of beings. Victor Frankenstein immersed himself with the study of anatomy in order to fully understand the human frame. Frankenstein worked several years to accomplish his goal of animating beings, therefore, he studied it's counterpart death. After several years of study, Frankenstein creates his creature using limbs of the deceased and electrical currents. Although the practice of Galvanism sparked the scientific research of the 19th century, 21st–century scientists have discovered a new method of practice. Modern day man has now ventured further in the path of discovery, as stem ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Most recently, breakthroughs in the modification of human anatomy have been introduced into society. Scientists have discovered ways to modify human genetics and anatomy, as well as making entirely new entities. Stem cells are specialized cells designed to prevent deficiencies or other diseases. Mayoclinic describe stem cells as beneficial to humanity, as they can "...mature into cells in bones, heart muscle, nerves, and other organs and tissue, researchers and doctors may better understand how diseases and conditions develop." (Mayoclinic Staff, Increase understanding of our diseases occur). Modern–day scientists use stem cells to perfect humanity, causing a healthier and more productive society. Scientists obtain stem cells through embryos and adult tissue, such as bone marrow. Furthermore, scientists have discovered new ways to multiply identical entities through cloning. The National Humane Genome Research institute describes cloning as " a number of different processes that can be used to produce genetically identical copies of a biological entity. The copied material, which has the same genetic makeup as the original, is referred to as a clone" (NHGRI, What is Cloning?) Scientists can modify a clone to benefit humanity. The NHGRI explains that "researchers who cloned Dolly have cloned other sheep that have been genetically modified to produce milk ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Cancer Diagnosis Subsides: A Case Study One the initial shock of a cancer diagnosis subsides, it's time to focus on choosing the best treatment option. Your oncologist is the best source of information about the optimal way to treat your cancer, but it's always wise to understand all the options so you can make the best choice possible. This overview will explain the basics and is an excellent stepping stone into more in depth research of the treatments that interest you. Surgery Depending on the type and location of the cancer, removing it surgically is sometimes an option. When possible, surgeons remove the entire tumor and some surrounding tissue to ensure that all of the cancer cells are removed. If the cancer is located in a vital organ, the surgeon may remove part of that organ or simply remove some of the tumor to make it smaller. A smaller tumor will respond better to other treatment methods than a large one. In late–stage cancers, surgery is sometimes used to alleviate the pain a tumor is causing, improving the patient's quality of life. Chemical Warfare ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Chemotherapy and radiation both work be destroying rapidly growing cancer cells. Chemotherapy does this by sending medication throughout the entire body. Radiation therapy targets the cancer cells more directly, but is sometimes sent throughout the body as well. When it is, the radiation is more likely to make its way into the cancer cells without affecting other tissues. Unfortunately, these treatments both kill some healthy cells, causing some unpleasant side effects. Targeted therapy is sometimes a better option. Although considered a form of chemotherapy, targeted therapy uses chemicals that attack only certain parts of a call rather than the entire entity. This allows the medication to target only the cancer cells that contain these anomalies while avoiding healthy ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. The Stardust Revolution by Jacob Berkowitz In his book, "The Stardust Revolution", Jacob Berkowitz extrapolates that we are currently witnessing the nascent of the next scientific revolution, the Stardust Revolution, where we are discovering that our evolutionary story does not begin on Earth but rather the stars. The Stardust Revolution is born from applying chemistry and biology to astronomy thus creating an entire new scientific field. These leaders in the field, astrochemists and astrobiologists, have stumbled upon layers of evidence that support the idea that everything in the universe is genetically related to everything else in the universe, breaking boundaries of archaic paradigms regarding evolution and the cosmos. Berkowitz believes that everything in the universe has the same origin and that there is indeed a way to follow the breadcrumbs and trace these links from our physically limited position on earth. There are two concepts that I found particularly fascinating that Berkowitz explores. The first concept is revolves around how elements are made and forged by stars, a new and bold idea that was unveiled by technology such as spectroscopy and the discovery of radioactivity. The second concept pertains to how these elements that are forged by stars have ultimately evolved to create life here on earth and possibly elsewhere in the universe. Evolution in itself is a controversial subject but Berkowitz takes it one step further, off of the boundaries of our Earth and into the mysterious heavenly bodies. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 9. Animal Testing Problem This article sums up the fact that we should move away from, but not completely get rid of animal testing. Since about the 1950's until 2013 the public support of animal testing has dropped about 33%. That number is expected to continually drop with younger generations, not just because of compassion and ethics, but because of the scientific community striving for improvement. One of the main problems with animal testing is that while humans and other animals may be similar, they are not the same. Because of this, side effects are missed, money is wasted, and still, there is only an 8% chance of a new chemical entity being approved for humans. Even with such a small percentage, animal testing is still required. To break away from animal testing ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 11. Multiple Governments and Intergovernmental Relationships Multiple Governments and Intergovernmental Relationships LaShon Thomas POL 215 September 18, 2014 Dr. David Waldman Multiple Governments and Intergovernmental Relationships The founding fathers created the constitution, outlaying the branches of government and clarifying their roles and responsibilities, providing a checks and balances system. It is comprised of three branches, the Executive Branch, the Legislative Branch, and the Judicial Branch. Each state, city and county has its own constitution that outlines the levels of local government. In the beginning, the idea was to create a government that could efficiently establish laws and enforce them, but also ensure that no one person or one group of people could not possess ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Disadvantages of intergovernmental Relationships Conversely, there are disadvantages to multiple government relationships. This relationship can sometimes bring about conflict of authority and confusion regarding which regulations to follow. For example, the move toward legalizing marijuana, while marijuana is illegal to the federal government, each state can vote and implement its own policy regarding legalizing it from the local level. This creates a gray area due to the fact that people living in these states can be prosecuted federally for the distribution and use of marijuana despite the fact that it is legal in their state. Secondly, the interdependent boundaries and relationships between federal and state governments, can lead to passing the buck or lack of accountability in regard to handling the country's affairs. Hurricane Katrina was a prime example of how this relationship can be a failure to the people. During this trying time, the citizens of New Orleans were made to suffer behind the bickering of the federal and local agencies playing the blame game, while failing to come up with a solution to the problems and admitting that there was a failure in policy to handle such devastation. Lastly, federalism may encourage regionalism, creating an uneven spread ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Fracking Argumentative Essay There is no doubt that fracking is an extremely dangerous way of obtaining energy. "Fracking is the process of drilling down into the earth before a high–pressure water mixture is directed at the rock to release the gas inside. Water, sand and chemicals are injected into the rock at high pressure which allows the gas to flow out to the head of the well" ("What Is Fracking"). Although fracking provides everyone with needed resources, it also results in life changing consequences. Therefore, fracking must be eliminated and research needs to be done in order to come up with new ways of obtaining the energy/resources needed in order for all entities to survive. In short, the precautionary principle must be used to ensure that safe and proper actions are ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, no one was warned about the issues that may occur because of fracking. For instance, many individuals water supply became contaminated without their knowledge and they became extremely ill from drinking their water. Sadly, some of these illnesses resulted in tragic deaths. Moreover, Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health discovered that "preterm births were 40 percent higher among women who lived in areas of intense drilling and fracking operations, and these women's pregnancies were 30 percent more likely to be considered high risk" (Page, Samantha). Fracking is not only hurting living individuals, but preexisting ones as well. What's more, there are many other connections between fracking and tragic occurrences, thus, fracking must be terminated. Truthfully, it is difficult to say whether or not these issues occurred because of lack of initial research or because fracking companies felt as though they invested too much to stop fracking when issues arose. No matter the reason, it is now known that fracking is dangerous, therefore, new ways of obtaining energy/resources must take ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 15. Case Studies : Contracts, Business, And Laws Case Studies Analyses Contracts, business, and laws are three simple little words, but when put together they have a substantial impact on our everyday lives. Below we will discuss three case studies. The first case is between Chris, Matt, and Ian vs. Donald Margolin, who was injured when he used an aftershave lotion that he bought off the internet called Funny Face. The second case is between Sam, his landlord, and a national chain store. Sam is being accused of conducting business from his apartment and going back on a verbal promise. In the last case is two lifelong friends who decided to join in a partnership and open up a sporting goods shop. Therefore, before the appropriate court can proceed with the first case, the court should take into several considerations around the rules of jurisdiction, alternative dispute resolution (ADR), and whether or not corporation/or corporate offices can be held for the criminal or potential act. In the second case before the court can rule the court should determine the various elements of a valid contract, if a quasi–contract exists, a promissory estoppel, and the rights an obligation of a tenant would prevail on Sam 's claims. Finally, in the third case between Jeb and Josh, they should determine the type of business entity that will overall protect their business and personal needs. Case Study One In the first case, personal jurisdiction is one of the two forms of jurisdictions that a court must consider before hearing a case. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. The Between India And India Essay Final Paper After World War II, the widespread implementation of colonial rule was ended and widespread post–colonial self–governance began. These fledgling states were mostly provided with a framework for governance that was left over from the previous colonial rule. The Parliament of India largely mirrors that of England, and this creates fundamental issues within the governance and creation of a new state, especially one with India's population. An already established style of governance has ways of being manipulated by outside forces that have been working within these frameworks for decades, possibly even a century or more, namely private corporations. When a private corporation effects a government in their own self interest, the corporate entity generally externalizes all risk to the governmental body and the public. In many cases, government intervention in the form of regulation or deregulation can allow for a trans–national corporate entity to exploit laws and operate in an unethical, but legal manner. In 1956, the nine year old Indian government passed the Companies Act of 1956, requiring, "affiliates of foreign companies to register as separate companies under Indian Law and imposes limits on foreign investment and participation in all Indian companies" (Peterson 2). Union Carbide, an American multi–national chemical conglomerate, wholly owned its Indian subsidiary and after the passage of the Companies Act. It allows GSK to consider more joint–ventures and sponsoring in research. Thanks to this, GSK managed to install a partnership with sixteen companies, following 53 R&D programs. This success relied mainly on strong Research and Development (R&D), patents, aggressive promotional tool and Salesforce. In the era of big–bang disruption and economic downturn, however, this industry is constantly under attack from numerous interested parties trying to reduce the size of the drugs bill (Moss, 2004). As the universe expanded, it got colder and darker and less like a place that might produce things like heavier chemicals, plants, and animals. This period of the history of the universe was called the Dark Ages. During the Dark Ages, a lot of atoms was flowing through space, which contained 75% hydrogen with one portion and about 25% helium with two protons. Some areas in the universe were just slightly hotter and denser than others, and gravity magnified those differences. As gravity increased, the whole thing was clumping faster. At the center of each of those clouds of atoms, atoms began to bang into each other more violently and heat up particularly ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When stars died, chemicals other than hydrogen and helium formed, which led to the next level of complexity–Heavier Chemical Element. Most stars spent about 90% of their life over billions of years on during protons and hydrogen nuclei into helium nuclei. When they run out of fuel, the furnace at the center of the star stopped supporting the star, and gravity took over. Small stars did not have much pressure at the center. They burned hydrogen slowly over billions of years at relatively low temperatures. When they died, they would slowly fade away. However, great stars had so much mass that they can create enormous pressures and temperature, and when the giant stars ran out of hydrogen, the temperature got cranked up even higher, which led the star to collapse. The high temperature that the collapse caused was able to make helium nuclei fuse into nuclei of carbon. When a star used up its helium, it collapsed again, and the cycle started over. The ideology was introduced to describe how the capitalist society functioned, in making everything standard, i.e. standardised products for standardised people. They believe the products are meant for more than just a profit but also creates people who adapts to the system of the capitalists (Adorno & Horkheimer 1944:31). Victor Frankenstein applies this idea to create his own "race" of beings. Victor Frankenstein immersed himself with the study of anatomy in order to fully understand the human frame. Frankenstein worked several years to accomplish his goal of animating beings, therefore, he studied its counterpart death. After several years of study, Frankenstein creates his creature using limbs of the deceased and electrical currents. Although the practice of Galvanism sparked the scientific research of the 19th century, 21st–century scientists have discovered a new method of practice. Modern day man has now ventured further into the path of discovery, as stem cells and cloning have both become relatively available options for humanity. Stem Cells can function as a specialized cell which can repair damaged or diseased tissue in the human frame. Furthermore, 21st–century studies have led to the discovery of cloning. Cloning specializes in the process of replicating an identical biological entity. Although Victor Frankenstein's practice of Galvanism focuses on a much different study of science than today, there still remains parallels between the work of Victor Frankenstein and the work of modern society's scientist. The Effect Of The Concentration Of A Substance On The Rate Of Reaction Year 9 Chemistry Assignment Term 3 Introduction The purpose of this experiment was to measure and interpret the effect of a chemical concentration on a reaction rate. A collision theory is a theory proposed by Max Trautz and William Lewis that states: qualitatively explains how chemical reactions occur and why reaction rates differ for different chemical reactions (Wikipedia, 2015). An example of collision theory is when two motor vehicles collide with one another creating a large impact as the particles combine with one another due to the large impact created. A chemical reaction is a process that involves the rearrangement of the molecular and ionic structure of a substance when the interaction of two or more chemicals is compounded to create a new substance (Middle School Chemistry, 2015). An example of a chemical reaction is when a bike begins to rust or when photosynthesis takes place (Uen.org, 2015). The different types of Molars used in the experiment affected the speed of the reactions of the acid. These times varied on the amount of concentration used in the molars. This was shown in the results of the experiment as the 2Molar gave an average time of 23.88 seconds, for the water to decrease to 30 ml in the test tube. The 1Molar gave an average 54.94 seconds to reach 30 ml of water in the test tube, and the 0.5Molar displayed an average time of 3 minutes 13 seconds to reach 30 mL. A chemical ... To investigate the effects of signaling heterogeneity on targeted therapy outcomes, we develop an integrated approach of in vitro experiments and three different mathematical models, intracellular signaling network model, cell population growth model, and hybrid cellular automata model, proceeded as follows. First, we develop an intracellular signaling network model. We construct simplified cancer–signaling pathway based on prior information about the pathway and experimentally perturb the pathway by various kinase inhibitors. The model defines protein activity or cell viability as a weighted sum of its neighbors, where each weight indicates interaction strength between two nodes in the pathway. It is worth noting that network nodes ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We also assume that the number of initial cell population in a treated condition is the same as one in an untreated control condition. Then cell viability is written as a function of growth rates and time. We consider the same time scale of our cell viability assay in our experiments. Here, we defined tumor and stroma region explicitly based on an image of lung adenocarcinoma patient tissue. Tumor region contains cancer cells. Since not all proteins in cancer cells are directly measurable due to experimental limitation, many players and intermediate proteins in the pathway are not included in our study. For this reason, an interaction between two proteins is not necessarily representing direct interaction. Rather, it represents diverse and abstract influence of one entity to other entity in steady state, where an entity can be a microenvironmental variable, intracellular protein, or cell viability. As a result, we believe our manuscript is now more accessible to broader audience. We now present core idea of three different mathematical modeling approaches upfront in introduction. We also provide more explicit and clearer explanation of each modeling strategy in mathematical modeling section. To avoid confusion our signaling model with kinetic modeling approaches, we changed Figure 1–2, which now emphasize model fitting to various perturbation conditions not time. • 64. The Widget: The Definition Of Life A glance in the Merriam Webster English dictionary offers twenty definitions for the word "life." These range in scope from theological context "spiritual existence transcending physical death" (Life 4) to the obvious "the period from birth to death" (Life 5a), but all assume the reader already understands what form life takes and its qualities. In response to these assumptions, there must be an objective definition of life that establishes what features and qualities all things considered alive possess. This definition should concisely determine what differences exist between a tree and a wooden door that results in the first being alive and the latter inanimate. Ultimately, this distinction is contingent on three categories of qualities: energy, reproduction, and molecular makeup. For the purposes of juxtaposition, throughout this essay I will reference a "widget" that I will name "Tot." Tot is an abstract unit of production just as we can say a ... Reproduction, among most living creatures, is less about enjoying the miracle of life with a significant other and more about fulfilling the instinctual duty of ensuring a specie's continuation. Life without reproduction is akin to an ice cream cone in July: it will not last long. As such, the definition of life necessitates the inclusion of reproduction. Like metabolism, reproduction comes in many forms. Some of the most basic prokaryotic organisms reproduce asexually. Asexual reproduction involves the replication of genetic material, and then an even division into two "new" individuals (Reece 1014). This method of reproduction, also known as mitosis, is also used in eukaryotic cells to regenerate cells within tissues or organs. An issue surrounding this form of reproduction is the lack of genetic variability. As it involves only one parent, the new generation has the exact same genetic sequence as the original generation (Reece ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Classification Of Drugs Essay Devonta Johnson Prof. Olojo CHE 102 November 30, 2016 Drugs In pharmacology, a pharmaceutical drug, also called a medication or medicine, is a chemical substance used to treat, cure, prevent, or diagnose a disease or to promote well–being. Traditionally drugs were obtained through extraction from medicinal plants, but more recently also by organic synthesis. Pharmaceutical drugs may be used for a limited duration, or on a regular basis for chronic disorders. Pharmaceutical drugs are often classified into groups of related drugs that have similar chemical structures, the same mechanism of action, a related mode of action, and that are used to treat the same disease. The Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical Classification System (ATC), the most widely used drug classification system, assigns drugs a unique ATC code. Another major classification system is the Biopharmaceutics Classification System. This classifies drugs according to their solubility and permeability or absorption properties. Medicinal chemistry and pharmaceutical chemistry is a branch of chemistry, especially synthetic organic chemistry, various other biological specialties, or bio–active molecules. Compounds used as medicines are most often organic compounds, which are often divided into the broad classes of small organic molecules like atorvastatin and fluticasone. Inorganic and organ metallic compounds are also useful as drugs. These compounds include lithium carbonate and gallium. In particular, medicinal ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 72. Descartes Mind-Body Dualism Argument Analysis In Descartes letters to Elisabeth, Descartes states that the non–material soul can act on the material body and vice versa. He also says that they are two distinct beings that form a union during someone's life, where they can control one another. Elisabeth states that this is false and that by the laws of physics, a soul cannot be both non–physical and able to act on a material entity. I would have to agree with Elisabeth in this argument. Descartes describes our soul as our thoughts and intellect and our body is as just the physical part of us. So the soul is our thoughts, memories, and personality. He takes belief in the concept of "mind–body dualism." "He (Descartes) reaches this conclusion by arguing that the nature of the mind (that is, a thinking, non–extended thing) is completely different from that of the body ... If we are thinking about a past event, then this is using our memory or if we are deciding what decision to make, we usually want to use our best judgement, which is usually used by looking back at past events and seeing whether we made the right or wrong choice and using that to make our current decision. Memory is another part of our brain though. Our memories are directly stored in certain areas of our brain. "For explicit memories – which are about events that happened to you (episodic), as well as general facts and information (semantic) – there are three important areas of the brain: the hippocampus, the neocortex and the amygdala. Implicit memories, such as motor memories, rely on the basal ganglia and cerebellum. Short–term working memory relies most heavily on the prefrontal cortex." New Forms, New Players: Rules of international law used to reside in treaties or customary law, but as new domains from the environment to the internet become appropriate for international regulation, states become unwilling to embrace strict rules.
