2. Definition :
Thermoperiodism :
A phenomenon in which growth or development is promoted by alternating
day and night temperatures.

3. Temperature for plants

Cold Temperature = <10oC
Optimum Temperature = 11-24oC
High Temperature = >25oC

4. Effect of Thermoperiodism on
Plants and Animals :
Reproduction
High Temperature favors tuber production
Growth and Development
Morphology
Helps in photosynthesis
Seed germination
Flowering
Productivity

5. Disadvantages :
 Too high or too low temperature prevent fruit set
 Adverse temperatures also cause poor quality
 Not all plants grow best in the same temperature
range.
 Low temperatures can result in poor growth
 Photosynthesis slows at low temperatures
 Since photosynthesis is slowed, growth is slowed
and this results in lower yields.
