How Does Shakespeare Use Dramatic Irony In Julius Caesar
One of literature's most distinguished plays, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, was written by the highly acclaimed William Shakespeare. Shakespeare was
an individual of many talents; among those talents were poetry, acting, and playwriting. During his life, Shakespeare wrote a total of thirty–seven
plays, one–hundred–seventy–four sonnets, and invented more than seventeen thousand of the words used in current English. A great number of those
plays and sonnets have been translated in over eighty languages, some of which include Chinese, Uzbek, and Bengali. William Shakespeare's works
have been so widely used in the English language that he has become the second most quoted author in English. Because of Shakespeare's great
success, The Tragedy of ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Right after Caesar had been killed, the conspirators had encountered Antony. Antony, being heartbroken with the death of Julius Caesar, had a simple
request, which was to speak at Caesar's funeral. Little did the men know the malevolent plan that Antony had in mind. When the day of the funeral
came, and Brutus had finished speaking, Antony came up and began his speech declaring, "Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears... For
Brutus is an honorable man; so are they all, all honorable men." (Julius Caesar. II. ii. 70–79). Antony clearly does not believe the men that killed his
beloved friend are honorable, yet he continues to call them this. Antony is demonstrating verbal irony by filling his words with sarcasm. Besides
verbal, situational, and dramatic irony, Shakespeare also used the powerful tool of symbolism within The Tragedy of Julius

How Does Homer Use Dramatic Irony In The Odyssey
Irony in The Odyssey Homer's Odyssey is an epic poem that, despite its length, keeps the readers or listeners engaged and interested until the end.
One way this bard keeps his audience absorbed in his tale is by the use of dramatic irony. Dramatic irony is a literary technique by which the full
significance of a character's words or actions, that are clear to the audience or reader, is unknown to the characters. Another concept ofirony is the state
of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often amusing as a result. Homer uses both types of irony in The
Odyssey to enhance his story and amuse his audience. During one adventure, Odysseus and his men are in the Cyclops Polyphemus' cave being
eaten two by two. Odysseus devises a scheme to get the survivors out of the cave. Part of his plan is to tell Polyphemus, "Nobody is my name." He
says, "Cyclops, you ask me for my famous name. I will tell you then, but you must give me a guest gift as you have promised. Nobody is my name.
My father and mother call me Nobody, as do all the others who are my companions." Then, when Polyphemus cries out for help his friends ask him ...

Penelope has set up an archery contest to test this stranger for she knows that only Odysseus can string and shoot the bow. Contestants had to string
the bow and then shoot through a row of ax heads. Before Odysseus left for war, he was the only man who could do it. After Odysseus wins the
contest, Penelope tricks him into revealing himself. She asks him to move her bed. Odysseus responds, "There is no mortal man alive, no strong
man, who could lightly move the weight somewhere else. I made it myself. There was a bole of an olive tree, I layed down my chamber around this
and built it until I finished it. (XXIII, 187 – 193) Penelope, knowing that it is truly Odysseus, runs to embrace

3 Examples Of Dramatic Irony
There are three different forms of irony used in the textbook: Dramatic irony, situational irony, and verbal irony. Dramatic Irony is used a lot in plays. It
is when the reader knows something that the character doesn't. Situational irony is when something happens that isn't the expected outcome, typically
with sharp contrasts and contradictions. Verbalirony is synonymous with sarcasm. It means when a person or character says one thing but means
another.
Dramatic irony is a literary technique, originally used in Greek tragedy, by which the full significance of a character's words or actions are clear to
the audience or reader although unknown to the character. One great example of dramatic irony can be found in Frank R. Stockton's The Lady, or
the Tiger. In this short story dramatic irony unfolds as the hero steps out into the arena, and the narrator reveals that the princess knows the secret of
the doors, and not only that, but she cannot decide whether she should let the tiger eat him or allow him to be married to her much hated rival.
Dramatic irony also occurs in The Gift of the Magi if the reader is able to figure out that Jim sold his watch ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For instance in The Gift of the Magi situational irony is used to highlight the selflessness of Della and Jim. They sell their most prized possessions so
that they can buy a Christmas gift for one another, only to find out that their gifts are consequently useless. Meanwhile, in Poison, situational irony is
what outlines the theme of the story. Harry was afraid of a venomous snake poisoning him when the only real poison in the story was the poison that
existed within him self. Another good example of situational irony can be found in The Most Dangerous Game. It's situationally ironic because
Rainsford prides himself on being one of the world's greatest hunters yet, in the story, he's the one who's being

Dramatic Irony In 'Lamb To The Slaughter'
In "Lamb to the Slaughter" by Roald Dahl, dramatic irony is identified, and it relates to the wry tone because it helps establish the tone that's
towards the ends of the story. The passage starts off with Mary Maloney, a loving wife, who later kills her husband with a leg of lamb. While the
police officers are investigating the crime, Mary asks them to eat dinner after the leg of lamb was done cooking (Dahl 161). The dramatic irony is
developed during the scene when the police departments are unknowingly eating their biggest evidence that will solve the entire crime, the leg of lamb.
They do not realize this as one stated, "Personally, I think it's right here on the premises," while they are currently chowing down on the murder
weapon (Dahl

Analysis Of Dramatic Irony In Marlowe

hristopher Marlowe has been characterized by various critics as a subjective playwright, one whose passions are reflected in the passions of his
characters. Michel Poirier states that Marlowe's mind "is spurred on by a passion similar to the one he has ascribed to some of the characters in his
dramas." Poirier concludes that there is a definite connection between Marlowe's temperament and ideas. His desires govern his thoughts and his
passions are the basis for his philosophy. Poirier considers that egotism is at the centre of his life and works. Paul Kocher goes so far as to say that
Marlowe's degree of subjectivity as a dramatist is the most important problem of all interpretation of his work. Kocher further notes that any theory of

R. B. Sharpe defines irony as "an attitude, a temper, a spirit in which one looks at life and art. It brings to light and emphasizes by art the
contradictions of living." G. G. Sedgewick gives the following definition of dramatic irony: "Dramatic irony, in brief, is the sense of contradiction
felt by spectators of a drama who see a character acting in ignorance of his condition. This is dramatic irony in its concentrated and specific form: it
grows ... out of that pervasive and controlling knowledge which we have called general irony and which is the property peculiar and essential to the
illusion of the theatre."
Sharpe's and Sedgewick's definitions of irony and dramatic irony are especially meaningful when one considers Marlowe's plays. The plays contain
many contradictions of life – contradictions between what appears to be truth and what is truth, between aspiration and achievement, between speech
and action. And Marlowe's characters consistently act ignorant of their conditions. In Tamburlaine, Faustus, Edward, Mortimer, Barabas, Guise, Dido,
and other minor characters, Marlowe has created characters in whom every speech and action involve ironic undertones resulting from this ignorance.
This irony establishes an objective position on the part of the playwright, thus, irony allowing Marlowe to maintain a detachment from his

Examples Of Dramatic Irony In The Open Window
In the story The Open Window by Saki (H. H. Munro) there are multiple instances of irony. This irony provides for a very comical and hilarious satire.
In numerous occasions, the reader will encounter situational, verbal, and even dramatic irony. Dramatic irony is an instance of irony in which the
reader knows what is going to happen; however, the character in the story does not. Situational irony is an instance of irony in which the character in the
story does something to expect a certain outcome; but, the exact opposite happens. Lastly, verbal irony is an instance of irony in which the character in
the story says something, but means something other than its literal meaning. Starting from the beginning of the list, dramatic irony is very

Ray Bradbury's Use Of Dramatic Irony In Fahrenheit 451
Ray Bradbury, the American author, and screenwriter of various forms of writing was born in Waukegan, Illinois, in 1920. He is known for writing
fantastical and unreal novels such as Fahrenheit 451. One of Bradbury's famous novels, Fahrenheit 451, published in 1953 portrays an innovative
world in the midst of a nuclear war. Ray Bradbury exemplifies dramatic irony throughout the novel with the help of the protagonist Guy Montag.
Dramatic irony is the contrast between the way things seem and the way things are. With the help of primary sources and secondary sources, Ray

McD. C. Turner. Oswald Doughty's review states that the subject of "Irony in English Literature" is a short essay that doesn't define irony in an easy
manner. This secondary source helps prove the importance of irony in literature because Doughty provides examples on how introducing irony in any
literary work can be difficult. The literary irony is easily interpreted in a comical or misfortunate approach, which is created in the plot and narration.
According to Doughty, "It is to irony as a weapon of disputation and denunciation that Mr. Turner devoted most attention, and ... finds the chief
stimulus to the use of irony in English literature." (Doughty 367) Mr. Turner's ironic writing is described as, "...passed over with the remark that it is

Dramatic Irony In Count Of Monte Cristo
From the introduction of Edmond DantГЁs to the final revenge of Count of Monte Cristo, Dumas uses irony in many parts of the novel to provide
readers a better understanding of the character's personality and actions. Dumas uses dramatic irony in situations when the different personas of
Edmond Dantes interact with others in the novel, who don't know that the personas are all Edmond Dantes. Situational irony takes effect when actions
of various characters do not match their expected actions. Most verbal irony occurs at the same time as most dramatic irony since he lies about
his fake names when he is in his other personas. Without irony being used, the readers wouldn't be able to connect ideas occurring in the novel
with the characters. As Edmond Dantes loses his dignity, he takes a new role as Count of Monte Cristo and other personas that was only a secret
to himself and the audience, which is a form of dramatic irony. After Dantes escaped from prison, he goes to Monsieur Marseilles and tells him that
he was "the head clerk of the firm of Thomson and French,"(Dumas 111) whose role he uses to buy an investment. Here he disguises himself as the
head clerk of the firm of Thompson and French to prevent others from knowing, which is dramatic irony since the audience knows something that
the characters in the novel don't. Not only were his personas a form of dramatic irony, but incidents that occured after Edmond's imprisonment were
also a type of dramatic irony. Noirtier had hidden the fact that he "killed [Frank's father]"(Dumas 310) from Franz, which is a form of dramatic irony
since the audience knew about it. Through this fact, the reader can view Noirtier as very dangerous individual but also as a protective grandparent
since he hid this fact from Valentine to protect her. Later, Caderousse and Andrea plans a robbery that will take place inthe Count of Monte Cristo's
house, but this robbery didn't stay a secret for long. The Count of Monte Cristo was given a letter that warned him of an upcoming robbery, and the
Count inferred that "they want to kill me,"(Dumas 330) which led him to be prepared. Dumas uses dramatic irony here because it leads the Count to be
prepared without Caderousse knowing, which

What Is The Dramatic Irony In The Cask Of Amontillado
Edgar Allan Poe, an American born writer and poet during the early 19th century, is known for his dark and twisted diction that continues to
captivate readers to this day. Nearly all of Poe's stories contain hidden symbolism and themes that entice readers to discover the secrets in his writings
over a hundred years later and the "Cask of Amontillado" is no different. Written in November of 1846, nearly three years before Poe's death, "The Cask
of Amontillado" is often regarded as one of Poe's master pieces, full of symbolism and dramatic irony. Edgar Allan Poe's dramatic ironies and
symbolisms in his short story "The Cask of Amontillado" convey a dark theme of pain, manipulation, and the impact of revenge. Poe's love for

death. Despite being the fortunate one, Fortunato lead himself to his own demise. Montresor's lust for revenge goes all the way back to his family
crest "No one Provokes me with impunity." This highlights how Montresor feels like he needs to get revenge to keep his family name intact.
Furthermore, there are also many ironic parallels made between the story and Catholic rituals. Montresor wears a roquelaire covering both his face
and the back of his head. Looking like a hood, sleek, black executioner, Montresor resembles death while in contract Fortunato. In contrast Fortunato
is dressed in motley carnival garb like a fool or clown (Clendenning). Coincidentally, after leading Fortunato to his grave by burning him alive as he
laid the last brick he finished by shouting "for the love of god" (Poe 10) where Fortunato would lay for 50 years. Ironically despite Montresor
enacting his revenge with impunity and never getting caught he is still filled with rage and anger even fifity years after while Fortunato was able to
die peacefully (Clendenning).

Dramatic Irony In The Cask Of Amontillado By Edgar Allan Poe
Dramatic irony is generally defined as irony in which a character kens less about his or her situation than the reader kens, engendering situations that
have a different outcome from the character's prospects. It is as if we are visually examining a train moving relentlessly toward a brick wall, which
one or more characters perceive as an open tunnel. A wreck is the only outcome. Poe establishes the framework of dramaticirony as early as the story's
second paragraph, engendering a web of erroneous prospects for his victim. For example: "It must be understood that neither by word nor deed had I
given [Fortunato] cause to doubt my good–will. I perpetuated, as was my won't, to smile in his face, and he did not perceive that my smile now was at
the noetic conception of his immolation." (Poe). In my opinion Montresor has engendered two elements of dramatic irony here. On one hand I
understand that Fortunato, because of the unidentified insult has been illuded into ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Through these ironies, Poe makes the story more fascinating, comprehensive. This has a certain effect on the reader's feelings toward Montresor and
Fortunato. I can feel sympathy for naГЇve of Fortunato because of his desire of Amontillado and his trust on Montresor. Or they feel horror how evil
Montresor is when he leads and buries alive his friend and gets revenge. The utilization of this figure of verbalization, which is a contradiction of
prospect between what is verbalized and what is designated or an incongruity between what might be expected by Fortunato. "The Cask of
Amontillado", which leads the audience to believe that this barrel of wine probably subsists are examples of circumstantial irony; as well as the fact
that the murder takes place during carnival season and the costumes the two men are wearing suits very well to their rolls in the

Dramatic Irony In The Inspector Calls
The play "The Inspector Calls" was set in 1912, whereas the book written by J.B. Priestley was published in 1945. The life back then was different as
all the people were placed into categories from the lower to upper class and they all were treated accordingly to their position. This play was very
important as Priestley was a socialist and wanted everyone to be treated equally and spread socialism in the world so no one faces unfairness as
this was Priestley's political view. Priestley was trying show the audience that World War 2 has just ended and he didn't want people to look and
follow the rules before the war. He wanted people to think new and their ideas should be fair to everyone, whether they are of different gender, class
or color.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When the inspector arrives, the lights should get much more "brighter and stronger" to show that the inspector is here to expose the Birling's soon
or later. Another quote used in the play for the inspector is" A police inspector. He says his name is inspector Goole" Priestley is showing that the
word "inspector" is used twice in the quote, which clearly shows, when the inspector comes in Priestley wants to show the audience that, the Birling
family has been involved in something that they really shouldn't be involved in. This creates a tension for the audience that is more serious than a
normal inspector, who won't just come there just like that, but with purposefulness and reasons. J.B Priestley has chosen the inspector's name
"Goole" as Priestly also made the inspector seem as a ghost or a ghoul, as the name Goole mostly refers to a ghost. A ghoul, which also is a fishing
lake, meaning that he is fishing for answers or maybe he already knows everything and he just wants the Birling family to admit what they did was
really wrong. Priestly is using these characters as an example to the audience that the Birling's who are up class need to stay in their limits and

Foreshadowing and Dramatic Irony in Death and the Maiden
Foreshadowing is the warning or the indication that something else is going to happen later on in the story. In Death and the Maiden, Ariel Dorfman
uses this literary device to the maximum, exploring all the different ways he can make the reader predict or foresee what's going to happen next.
However, Dorfman also takes on the audience's ideas and implements dramatic irony, giving the plot a twist of events and making the audience question
themselves and their own theories as to why the character acts that way or why the author set things as they are.
Dorfman takes the idea of dramatic irony when referring to the characters and their roles in the play.
The greatest contrast in the play is between Paulina and Gerardo.

In addition, one can also argue about Paulina's love–hate relationship with Gerardo, as she is clearly very emotionally attached to him, yet seems as
though she treats him with a sort of disrespect or harsh manner. Paulina's strange relationship also brings the audience to question this woman's sense of
judgment, and maybe even her past. Ironically, later she refers to him as 'my little man', contrasting with how he called her, and making sure that
Gerardo knows that he is her husband, and she's in charge.
Furthermore, Dorfman shows the dramatic irony in the gender roles once Paulina finds out about Doctor Miranda and gets the gun. At the beginning
of the play, the gun was a sign of safety and security, and by the climax, she uses the gun to manipulate Roberto and Gerardo to do what she wants,
and what she thinks is 'fair'. GERARDO: Paulina, I'm asking you to please give me that gun. PAULINA: No. GERARDO: While you point it at me,
there is no possible dialogue.
PAULINA: On the contrary, as soon as I stop pointing it at you, all dialogue will automatically terminate. If it put it down, you'll use your strength to
win the argument.
(Death and the Maiden, Act 1, scene 4, pgs– 24–25) Paulina knows that without the gun, she is hopeless. Her own husband won't listen to her, and they

Examples Of Dramatic Irony In The Odyssey
Homer uses dramatic irony to keep the reader on the edge of their seat. Dramatic irony is "irony that is inherent in speeches or a situation of a drama
and is understood by the audience but not grasped by the characters in the play." that happens many times in The Odyssey. .The first example is when
the readers know the men have wax in their ears, but the Sirens don't. The last two examples of dramatic irony happen when Odysseus is disguised as
the beggar and only the readers know. Dramatic irony helps keep the readers interested and Homer did a great job of that.
The first example of dramatic irony is when Odysseus and his men are sailing and encounter two Sirens. The reader knows that the men put wax in
their ears, but the Sirens don't . When Odysseus put wax "laid it thick on their ears. They tied me up, then, plumb amidships, back to the mast, lashed

Dramatic Irony In Twelfth Night
In the play Twelfth Night, Shakespeare uses dramatic irony to develop the comedic effect in the characters relationships. The use of dramatic irony
produces most of the comedic effect by revealing situations and relationships to the audience, but not the cast. Developing the plot with this literary
device provides comedic and ironic situations while engaging the audience.
Including situations and relationships that are not fully revealed to the cast but are obvious to the audience permits them to feel included or "in on it".
Dramatic irony encompasses the love triangle between Cesario (Viola), Orsino and Olivia to involve the audience and create humor. After Orsino
sees how young and attractive Cesario is, he sends her to win over Olivia without knowing the reality of the situation. In this scene, Cesario feels
this task is of "a barful strife" for "whoe'er [she] woo, [she]would be his wife." (1.4.43) Revealing her true feelings for the Duke and Olivia proves
her situation to be awkward and ironic because of her disguise. Providing her confession before Cesario actually talks to Olivia produces suspense and
strengthens the dramatic irony towards the trio.
Aside from the fact that Cesario is falling for a man who is already infatuated, Olivia begins to reveal her true feelings as well. Establishing dramatic
irony towards Cesario's disguise and feelings towards Olivia and Orsino add to the comedic effect while developing the plot and engaging the
audience. Seeing how

Interpreting The Use Of Dramatic Irony In A Short Story
Irony is used to convey a message that has the opposite meaning of its actual meaning, differentiating the appearance of things and reality. There is
different types of irony as well: verbal, situational, and dramatic. Personally, once a friend of mine was walking with me on the bike path and tripped
over a rock, falling to the ground. I instantaneously burst into laughter, instead of helping her up or even asking if she was okay. Why would this be
ironic many may ask? Not even five minutes after this happened, I tripped (I am pretty sure there was nothing there for me to trip over) an fell to the
ground. I never intended or planned on tripping, which makes the situation ironic. The situation ended quite differently than I had anticipated. Another
example would be if I said to you "isn't the weather beautiful outside today", and it is actually –twenty degrees and snowing. Stating one thing, but
meaning another. Irony comes in different forms as well. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Examples Of Dramatic Irony In A Doll's House
Dramatic irony is a valuable tool used by writers in literary works in order to engage the audience in the works and to add a level complexity to the
characters. Dramatic irony is understood by the audience, but not the characters. With this particular type of irony, the writer makes the audience more
involved and they are able to empathize more with the characters in the works. Although the character may be heavily disliked, dramatic irony can
cause the viewer to feel a sense of empathy as though they were in the same situation. With this technique, the character may also seem more real and
relatable. And more often than not, when dramatic irony is used, the viewer will be put in a position of helplessness. In A Doll House, Ibsen takes
advantage of this technique and utilizes heavy amounts of dramatic irony with his characters, especially Torvald, in order to engross the audience and
also to place the audience in a position where they are hopeless, which could ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

dancing as if your life depended on it," to which Nora says, "So it does" (Ibsen 58). Regrettably, Torvald does not catch on to the double meaning of
Nora's statement. Torvald may not see the fuss, but to Nora the Tarantella is the last nail holding the cracking foundation of their marriage. She wants
perfection and to pretend to be the fragile doll one last time before the truth is revealed to Torvald. Before her whole life is turned upside down and

How Does Arthur Miller Use Dramatic Irony In The Crucible
Arthur Miller sure did include a lot of irony in this play.He seemed to use three main types of irony, such as situational, verbal, and dramatic. Situational
irony is where in a situation actions have an effect that is the complete opposite from what was intended. While verbal irony is when someone says one
thing and actually means something else. And then there's dramatic irony which is when a situation is understood by the audience but not by the
characters in the play. In Arthur Miller's play, The Crucible, he uses situational, verbal, and dramatic irony to create suspense.
For example, he uses situational irony to demonstrate when actions have have an outcome that is different from what the audience intended it to be.
Such as how in the beginning of the play Abigail wanted and planned to be with John in the end. She wanted him to love her and just be with her
forever. When it turned out to be her very own fault that things don't go as she planed. Such as her actions that lead to his death. Not to mention, when

In William Shakespeare's drama Othello dramatic irony is refers to a situation in which events or facts not known to a character on stage are known to
another character and the audience. There are many instances where dramatic irony is created in the play, the following sentences are some of them.
The audience knows Iago is behind everything going awry but none of the other characters know until the end of the play. Othello accuses Desdemona
of having an affair with Cassio, the audience and Iago knows this is untrue. Emilia tells Desdemona that she has not seen her beloved handkerchief but
the audience and Iago know that she stole it. Dramatic irony builds suspense for the audience, who so badly want to know the final outcome of the
events. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Othello values Iago's opinion so much that he regards him as "Honest Iago", but all along he was his worst enemy. For example, when the fight
Iago sets into motion through Roderigo breaks out and word gets back to Othello that Cassio was fighting, he trusts Iago to tell him the truth about
the situation. Iago falsely accuses Cassio of being drunk all the time, starting the fight, and he also pretends to be saddened to tell Othello of Cassio's
"misfortunes." The audience knows he is lying but Othello falls for Iago's act anyway, believing him to be honorable. Dramatic irony played in the
favor of Iago because he knew of all the lies he was telling to the other characters, however the characters themselves assumed them to be

Examples Of Dramatic Irony In The Cask Of Amontillado
The short story of "The Cask Of Amontillado" by Edgar Allen Poe is a riveting story of betrayal and death. Within the story Poe focuses on the
protagonist, Montresor, who has a great disdain for a man named Fortunat. Although we don't know why Montresor hates Fortunato, we know that
Montresor wants revenge, and thus conspires a plan to murder Fortunato. In contrast to the audience, Fortunato is unaware of his impending doom,
which is a beautiful display of dramatic irony. Within "The Cask Of Amontillado", Poe uses irony, word choice, setting and various other literary
devices to set the mood of the story.
Irony is one of many literary devices, that is used expertly, by Poe to set the mood of the story. For example, in the story, the readers... Show more

When Montresor finds Fortunado he is at a party which would emphasize the happiness that Montresor once enjoyed and then, in direct dichotomy to
the party, he brings Fortunato to a crypt, which obviously shows the darker nature of the situation. Eventually, Fortunado is sealed up in a wall and left
to die in a crypt.
Uncertainty is used in the "The Cask Of Amontillado" to further the suspenseful nature and to darken the mood of the story. When Fortunado
follows Montresor to the crypt, the suspense is built and audience is forced to sit in torment waiting to see if poor Fortunato will escape, or fall
victim to his conspirator. "The nitre!" I said: "see, it increases. It hangs like moss upon the vaults. We are below the river's bed. The drops of
moisture trickle among the bones. Come, we will go back ere it is too late. Your cough–" This excerpt adds to the uncertainty of the story as it provides
Fortunato an escape. The reader may hope that Fortunato will take the offer and return safely to the surface.
Conclusively, Edgar Allen Poe uses a variety of devices to set the mood in "The Cask Of Amontillado". Examples of the devices Poe uses: the
suspense of the unknown, tone, setting and irony. All of these literary devices are implemented and paint a grim, dark natured mood for the

How Does Antigone Use Dramatic Irony In Oedipus Rex
Dramatic Irony Creates Tension Throughout Several Pieces of Work
Irony is one of the many elements in literature that enhances a piece of work in more detail and it also creates more tension within the context and the
characters themselves. More specifically, dramatic irony is when the audience and readers know something that the characters themselves in the play,
book, or movie don't know. Oedipus Rex by Sophocles, Antigone by Sophocles, and The Lion King produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation, all
portray dramatically ironic events throughout their plots. Oedipus Rex, in particular, has a strong cathartic ending as well, which is when strong
emotions are released or repressed. The use of dramatic irony is a key element that helps create ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The tension, though the dramatic irony, carries out through the entire play because everyone is desperate to find the murderer and when they find
out that the murderer is Oedipus, the tension has risen to its climax and new conflicts arise. Many emotions overflow within several of the
characters, especially Jocaste and Oedipus himself. The Second Messenger said, "And there we saw her hanging, her body swaying, From the cruel
chord she had noosed about her neck," (Oedipus Sophocles). Jocaste was so overwhelmed about marrying her son, the one who murdered King Laius,
her former husband, that she hung herself to her death. The Second Messenger also said, "For the King ripped from her gown the golden brooches,
That were her ornament, and raised them, and plunged them down, Straight into his own eyeballs..." (Oedipus Sophocles). Oedipus couldn't bear with
the fact that he married his mother and killed his father that he took Jocaste's pins and blinded himself with them. He took full responsibility by
imposing self–punishment on himself by taking away his sight, and ordering one of his people to take him away to a far away distance, away from the
people he betrayed. Many intense emotions emerged within Oedipus and Jocaste when the truth was finally

Dramatic, Verbal and Situational Irony in 'The Cask of...
"The Cask of Amontillado" is a unique story as it appeals to readers through the use of irony. There are several types of literary irony present
throughout this story, such as situational, dramatic, and verbal. Irony can influence the portrayal of a character in a story. Irony can also add intrigue
and excitement to the plot of the story. In Edgar Allen Poe's story, he uses the literary element ofirony to add to the plot and influence how the
characters are portrayed throughout his story.
One of the first examples Poe uses is situational irony in the title. Situational irony is when something turns out to be the opposite of what is expected.
The title, "The Cask of Amontillado", leads the reader to believe that a wine container or crate will be the topic of the story. After reading the story,
however, the reader finds that there is actually no sort of cask of Amontillado, sherry, or any other wine. However, if the reader closely analyzes the
title, an understanding of the irony soon emerges. The word cask means wine barrel and comes from the same root word that forms casket or coffin.
So the cask of wine in the story ironically represents the casket of Fortunato, which turns out to be the small crypt at the end of the catacombs.
Another use of situational irony involves the name of Fortunato. The word Fortunato is Italian for good fortune or luck. This leads the reader to believe
that something great or lucky will come to Fortunato in the story, but that is not the case

Dramatic Irony In Shakespeare's Twelfth Night
The audience is kept on their toes as they experience Romeo and Juliet for the first time. Romeo believes that Juliet has died, and contemplates death
himself, "For fear of that, I still will stay with thee, /And never from this palace of dim night/Depart again" (5.3.115–17). "Don't do it!" the crowd may
whisper, as Romeo drinks the liquid of death. Little does Romeo know, Juliet has faked her death. The crowd is in sorrow for the tragic and gratuitous
death of the beloved character as he sacrifices his life for love. The last lines of Romeo are a display of dramatic irony, after death, Romeo may not
acknowledge his mistake. Only the audience will know of Juliet's decision to fake her death. Shakespeare is able to use irony to a great extent in his
plays, and Twelfth Night is no exception to this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
With a play, Shakespeare knew that the audience had a short attention span, and therefore, there constantly need conflict or humor, and dramatic irony
serves that purpose. The characters are completely ignorant to the effects of the things they say. Though, the audience knows that Viola has dressed
herself like a man, none of the other characters know of this fact. The audience truly becomes the audience. Orsino, thinking that Cesario is a man,
compliment him for his womanly parts. Viola even goes as far as hinting her love for Orsino, when Orsino asks, "What kind of woman is 't" Viola
replies, "Of your complexion" (2.4.30–31). The audience is humored by this interaction. Subsequently, Malvolio is made a victim for the sake of
humor. Using deception, the staff of Olivia's household, along with Sir Toby Belch, tricks Malvolio into thinking that Olivia loves him. Given
instructions to wear yellow stockings, and to be cross gartered, Malvolio is used to entertain the audience. Dramatic irony is used to interest the
audience with an interesting

The Use of Dramatic, Situational, and Verbal Irony in...
In the play Othello, Shakespeare uses many literary devices to help the reader understand the theme of the story. One of those many literary
devices used in the play, is the wide range of irony. Throughout the pages of the book the reader will see the use of dramatic, situational, and verbal
irony. Shakespeare does not use irony in an understated way, it is very direct, and can be found on almost every page of the book. The use of irony
creates suspense, and adds interest as to what will happen. There are many examples of situational irony in Othello. One big example that went
throughout the story was the triangle of Cassio, Othello, and Iago. Iago wanted Cassio dead, while Othello promoted Cassio to a higher position, and

A third example of irony in the play is the use of war. In real life Othello is actually fighting a war, and he is the leader that is in the topmost
position. While on the other hand, there is a war in Othello's head. He is fighting amongst himself, trying to see if Desdemona is really cheating on
him or not. This is the war he loses. The verbal irony used in the play is sometimes zany. Some of the lines are found to be the exact opposite of
what is actually the truth, but in such a manner is drives the audience crazy. This is especially found between Iago and Othello. Othello would be
found saying things as: Honest Iago . . . "(V.II.92), "I know, Iago, Thy honesty and love doth mince this matter" (II.III.263). Iago has poured his
poison into Othello and made him truly deem that he is his friend and protector. It shows how much trust Othello has in Iago, and shows the reader
how it is going to waste. One line that shows great irony is: "O, beware, my lord, of jealousy! It is the green–eyed monster, which doth mock the meat
it feeds on" (III.III.195–96). But the whole reason Iago wants to ruin Othello is because he is jealous, yet he counsels Othello on the matter instead. In
the end, Othello does kill his wife because he in fact is jealous. Verbal irony is found throughout this play probably the most. It adds a bit of humor
while tormenting the characters, who don't know the truth. Dramatic irony is key component of

Dramatic Irony In Oedipus Rex
Sophocles, an ancient Greek tragedian, composed a famous play known as Oedipus Rex. Sophocles use of different types of irony throughout his play
allowed him to create a popular play. Irony can be best defined as that middle ground between what is said and what is meant, or others understanding
of what was said and what was meant. Irony can be broken down into three different types: Dramatic, Verbal, and Situational.Sophocles enriched his
play, Oedipus Rex, with irony to develop an easily understood and intriguing story. Dramatic irony can be found all throughout the play to keep the
readers entertained with information the characters do not know. Dramatic irony occurs when the readers are fully aware of the meaning of the
character's actions and words but the character itself is unaware. During the play, Oedipus is responsible for killing his father, Laius. Oedipus then
marries his mother, Jocasta, and has children. Oedipus is unaware of the situation that is occurring due to his fate. Since Oedipus is the new town
King, he responds to the tragic death of King Laius appropriately. In Sophocles play, Oedipus states, "Whoever killed King Laius might– who knows?
– lay violent hands even on me – and soon. I act for the murdered king in my own interest" (1.1.141–143). This is an example of dramatic irony
because Oedipus is looking for the killer of the King Laius– his father. The irony is he is looking for himself because he is the murder of his father.

How Is Dramatic Irony Used In A Midsummer Night's Dream
Many people don't understand the proper use of irony is and that there is three types of irony. There is dramatic irony, which is when the characters
in the story does not know something but the audience does, There is also verbal irony, which is when someone means the opposite of what they
say. Finally there is situational irony, when the opposite of what you think is going to happen happens. In this essay I will be talking about the
different types of irony that is used in the play A Midsummer Night's Dream. There are many examples of dramatic irony in A Midsummer Night's
Dream. An example is when everyone switches who they love because of the flower. The Characters do not know about the flower, but the audience

Those were just some examples of dramatic irony in the play. There a lot of verbal irony in A Midsummer Night's Dream too. This includes when
Hellena says, " . . . Someone should write a book about it"(Shakespeare 3.2.240–245). This is verbal irony because she does not actually mean to write
a book. She is being sarcastic. Additionally, when she says, "That's a good one."(Shakespeare 3.2.250) In this example, she is being sarcastic
again, she does not mean that it is good. Those two examples were only a few examples of verbal irony in the play. Finally there is situational
irony. In the play you expected Titania to fall in love with someone good looking, but instead she fell in love with bottom as a donkey. Because you
did not expect this to happen, this is an example of situational irony. The other example is when everything worked out in the end because of Puck
and Thesis used spells to make people fall in love. You did not expect after how everything was messed up that it would work out in the end. That is
why is is another example of situational irony. That was only a few of examples in the

Dramatic Irony In R. G. Marlowe
C
hristopher Marlowe has been characterized by various critics as a subjective playwright, one whose passions are reflected in the passions of his

Dramatic Irony In The Cask Of Amontillado
It is known that Edgar Allan Poe was a short story writer, novelist, essayist, poet and an editor. His background created a foundation in short fiction
and the effects of it. In Poe's short story, "The Cask of Amontillado" he tells a short story of great tension and revenge. The author uses many different
literary elements in his story including irony. This entire story is built from the bottom up of ironic situations and things. The title for instance has
the word Cask which means a barrel of wine. The word cask is also short for the word casket which can be also known as a coffin, so the author is
setting the story up already by the title meaning it will be about the casket of Amontillado. There are two types of irony that are used in this story,
verbal and dramatic irony. An example of dramatic irony is when the reader themselves learn about what is about to become of Fortunato who is
too intoxicated to realize what is going on and still goes into the catacombs in search of the Amontillado. Poe continues to further drag out the
irony when he named one of the main characters Fortunato when in fact he is a man of misfortune. Also Fortunato is dressed up in a fool's
costume since in fact Montresor will in fact make a fool of him that is all a part of his plan. Charles N. Nevi writes about why Fortunato is dressed
the way he is and that "Fortunato's dress is ironic, for a jester is not just a man to be laughed at; he is a man who makes others laugh by being aware

Examples Of Dramatic Irony In The Masque Of The Red Death
In the same way, dramatic irony is when the reader knows something that the characters do not, which causes the reader to fear or dread what they
suspect will happen. The first indication of dramatic irony is in "Masque of the Red Death" when the black room with the blood red windows is
described. This description creates a bad feeling about the room and the reader senses something bad will happen in that room. This idea is proven
later when the Prince dies in that room. Another example of dramatic irony is demonstrated in "Terrible Things" when Bunting writes "'We have come

Examples Of Dramatic Irony In Ethan Frome
Pentheus foolishly suspects that the stranger is weak based solely on his effeminate appearance. The audience is quickly made aware of Pentheus'
ignorance in expecting the conventional, because they know that Dionysus is far from it. The king's shallowness proves to be fatal when he is
convinced to enter the domain of the Bacchae and is brutally killed by them, just as Dionysus had planned. Euripides and many of his contemporaries
were masters of dramatic irony. Another example of dramatic irony lies in Edith Wharton's novel Ethan Frome. The author reveals in the prologue that
Ethan remains in Starkville after sustaining a serious injury from a mysterious accident. Although the details are unclear, when Ethan expresses his
desire for freedom and a life away from the cold and bitter town, The reader is well aware that he does not get the happy ending he wants so

Chillingworth, he discloses his plans to take vengeance on her lover. Chillingworth, Hester's husband, remarks "I shall make him tremble" (Hawthorne

There are three types of Ironies employed in the novel: Dramatic irony, verbal irony, situational irony. Dramatic irony occurs when the reader knows
the outcome of the situation while the character fails to perceive it. The most evident example of dramatic irony is seen in the first section with the
reaction Moshe the Beadle receives upon coming back to Sighet. Moshe who lived through horrifying atrocity had only one desire of letting others
know what horror awaited and wanted to help them escape. Yet, people's reaction to him is that of distrust, derision and rebuff. It is particularly ironic
as he sits broken not because of the Nazis but because of his own people. Another example of verbal irony is when, after the Jews are ordered to wear
yellow stars, Elie's father says, "The yellow star? So what? It's not lethal..."(Wiesel, 11) the statement is ironic because that is exactly how Elie's father
dies. The wearing of the yellow star was one step on the path to the concentration camps and almost certain

Dramatic Irony In The Lady In Davao
The two ironies I have observed from the material was when Marjorie told Jimmy has to leave her house in Davao just as he leans in to kiss her and

you are having an affair or you work at a brothel, most especially for a married woman like Sylvia. It was quite important that all women portray

outspoken in terms of their rights to act according to what they think is appropriate as an individual. Another dated material shown in the play was
when Marjorie was showing the 3 possible ending of the story, one of the scenes was quite vulgar as it showed Marjorie, Sylvia and Jimmy caught

How Does Shakespeare Use Dramatic Irony In Julius Caesar

  • 1. How Does Shakespeare Use Dramatic Irony In Julius Caesar One of literature's most distinguished plays, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, was written by the highly acclaimed William Shakespeare. Shakespeare was an individual of many talents; among those talents were poetry, acting, and playwriting. During his life, Shakespeare wrote a total of thirty–seven plays, one–hundred–seventy–four sonnets, and invented more than seventeen thousand of the words used in current English. A great number of those plays and sonnets have been translated in over eighty languages, some of which include Chinese, Uzbek, and Bengali. William Shakespeare's works have been so widely used in the English language that he has become the second most quoted author in English. Because of Shakespeare's great success, The Tragedy of ... Antony, being heartbroken with the death of Julius Caesar, had a simple request, which was to speak at Caesar's funeral. Little did the men know the malevolent plan that Antony had in mind. When the day of the funeral came, and Brutus had finished speaking, Antony came up and began his speech declaring, "Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears... For Brutus is an honorable man; so are they all, all honorable men." (Julius Caesar. II. ii. 70–79). Antony clearly does not believe the men that killed his beloved friend are honorable, yet he continues to call them this. Antony is demonstrating verbal irony by filling his words with sarcasm. Besides verbal, situational, and dramatic irony, Shakespeare also used the powerful tool of symbolism within The Tragedy of Julius ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. How Does Homer Use Dramatic Irony In The Odyssey Irony in The Odyssey Homer's Odyssey is an epic poem that, despite its length, keeps the readers or listeners engaged and interested until the end. One way this bard keeps his audience absorbed in his tale is by the use of dramatic irony. Dramatic irony is a literary technique by which the full significance of a character's words or actions, that are clear to the audience or reader, is unknown to the characters. Another concept ofirony is the state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often amusing as a result. Homer uses both types of irony in The Odyssey to enhance his story and amuse his audience. During one adventure, Odysseus and his men are in the Cyclops Polyphemus' cave being eaten two by two. Odysseus devises a scheme to get the survivors out of the cave. Part of his plan is to tell Polyphemus, "Nobody is my name." He says, "Cyclops, you ask me for my famous name. I will tell you then, but you must give me a guest gift as you have promised. Nobody is my name. My father and mother call me Nobody, as do all the others who are my companions." Then, when Polyphemus cries out for help his friends ask him ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Penelope has set up an archery contest to test this stranger for she knows that only Odysseus can string and shoot the bow. Contestants had to string the bow and then shoot through a row of ax heads. Before Odysseus left for war, he was the only man who could do it. After Odysseus wins the contest, Penelope tricks him into revealing himself. She asks him to move her bed. Odysseus responds, "There is no mortal man alive, no strong man, who could lightly move the weight somewhere else. I made it myself. There was a bole of an olive tree, I layed down my chamber around this and built it until I finished it. (XXIII, 187 – 193) Penelope, knowing that it is truly Odysseus, runs to embrace ... • 3. 3 Examples Of Dramatic Irony There are three different forms of irony used in the textbook: Dramatic irony, situational irony, and verbal irony. Dramatic Irony is used a lot in plays. It is when the reader knows something that the character doesn't. Situational irony is when something happens that isn't the expected outcome, typically with sharp contrasts and contradictions. Verbalirony is synonymous with sarcasm. It means when a person or character says one thing but means another. Dramatic irony is a literary technique, originally used in Greek tragedy, by which the full significance of a character's words or actions are clear to the audience or reader although unknown to the character. One great example of dramatic irony can be found in Frank R. Stockton's The Lady, or the Tiger. In this short story dramatic irony unfolds as the hero steps out into the arena, and the narrator reveals that the princess knows the secret of the doors, and not only that, but she cannot decide whether she should let the tiger eat him or allow him to be married to her much hated rival. Dramatic irony also occurs in The Gift of the Magi if the reader is able to figure out that Jim sold his watch ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For instance in The Gift of the Magi situational irony is used to highlight the selflessness of Della and Jim. They sell their most prized possessions so that they can buy a Christmas gift for one another, only to find out that their gifts are consequently useless. Meanwhile, in Poison, situational irony is what outlines the theme of the story. Harry was afraid of a venomous snake poisoning him when the only real poison in the story was the poison that existed within him self. Another good example of situational irony can be found in The Most Dangerous Game. It's situationally ironic because Rainsford prides himself on being one of the world's greatest hunters yet, in the story, he's the one who's being ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 4. Dramatic Irony In 'Lamb To The Slaughter' In "Lamb to the Slaughter" by Roald Dahl, dramatic irony is identified, and it relates to the wry tone because it helps establish the tone that's towards the ends of the story. The passage starts off with Mary Maloney, a loving wife, who later kills her husband with a leg of lamb. While the police officers are investigating the crime, Mary asks them to eat dinner after the leg of lamb was done cooking (Dahl 161). The dramatic irony is developed during the scene when the police departments are unknowingly eating their biggest evidence that will solve the entire crime, the leg of lamb. They do not realize this as one stated, "Personally, I think it's right here on the premises," while they are currently chowing down on the murder weapon (Dahl ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. Analysis Of Dramatic Irony In Marlowe C hristopher Marlowe has been characterized by various critics as a subjective playwright, one whose passions are reflected in the passions of his characters. Michel Poirier states that Marlowe's mind "is spurred on by a passion similar to the one he has ascribed to some of the characters in his dramas." Poirier concludes that there is a definite connection between Marlowe's temperament and ideas. His desires govern his thoughts and his passions are the basis for his philosophy. Poirier considers that egotism is at the centre of his life and works. Paul Kocher goes so far as to say that Marlowe's degree of subjectivity as a dramatist is the most important problem of all interpretation of his work. Kocher further notes that any theory of ... It brings to light and emphasizes by art the contradictions of living." G. G. Sedgewick gives the following definition of dramatic irony: "Dramatic irony, in brief, is the sense of contradiction felt by spectators of a drama who see a character acting in ignorance of his condition. This is dramatic irony in its concentrated and specific form: it grows ... out of that pervasive and controlling knowledge which we have called general irony and which is the property peculiar and essential to the illusion of the theatre." Sharpe's and Sedgewick's definitions of irony and dramatic irony are especially meaningful when one considers Marlowe's plays. The plays contain many contradictions of life – contradictions between what appears to be truth and what is truth, between aspiration and achievement, between speech and action. And Marlowe's characters consistently act ignorant of their conditions. In Tamburlaine, Faustus, Edward, Mortimer, Barabas, Guise, Dido, and other minor characters, Marlowe has created characters in whom every speech and action involve ironic undertones resulting from this ignorance. This irony establishes an objective position on the part of the playwright, thus, irony allowing Marlowe to maintain a detachment from his ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 6. Examples Of Dramatic Irony In The Open Window In the story The Open Window by Saki (H. H. Munro) there are multiple instances of irony. This irony provides for a very comical and hilarious satire. In numerous occasions, the reader will encounter situational, verbal, and even dramatic irony. Dramatic irony is an instance of irony in which the reader knows what is going to happen; however, the character in the story does not. Situational irony is an instance of irony in which the character in the story does something to expect a certain outcome; but, the exact opposite happens. Lastly, verbal irony is an instance of irony in which the character in the story says something, but means something other than its literal meaning. • 7. Ray Bradbury's Use Of Dramatic Irony In Fahrenheit 451 Ray Bradbury, the American author, and screenwriter of various forms of writing was born in Waukegan, Illinois, in 1920. He is known for writing fantastical and unreal novels such as Fahrenheit 451. One of Bradbury's famous novels, Fahrenheit 451, published in 1953 portrays an innovative world in the midst of a nuclear war. Ray Bradbury exemplifies dramatic irony throughout the novel with the help of the protagonist Guy Montag. Dramatic irony is the contrast between the way things seem and the way things are. With the help of primary sources and secondary sources, Ray Bradbury illustrates the importance of dramatic irony in literature throughout the novel Fahrenheit 451. Oswald Doughty's review states that the subject of "Irony in English Literature" is a short essay that doesn't define irony in an easy manner. This secondary source helps prove the importance of irony in literature because Doughty provides examples on how introducing irony in any literary work can be difficult. The literary irony is easily interpreted in a comical or misfortunate approach, which is created in the plot and narration. According to Doughty, "It is to irony as a weapon of disputation and denunciation that Mr. Turner devoted most attention, and ... finds the chief stimulus to the use of irony in English literature." (Doughty 367) Mr. Turner's ironic writing is described as, "...passed over with the remark that it is "little" irony." (368) Lastly, Oswald Doughty states that in history, irony is always suggested in English literature. The work should be readable and clear when involving the literary of dramatic irony in ... • 8. Dramatic Irony In Count Of Monte Cristo From the introduction of Edmond DantГЁs to the final revenge of Count of Monte Cristo, Dumas uses irony in many parts of the novel to provide readers a better understanding of the character's personality and actions. Dumas uses dramatic irony in situations when the different personas of Edmond Dantes interact with others in the novel, who don't know that the personas are all Edmond Dantes. Situational irony takes effect when actions of various characters do not match their expected actions. Most verbal irony occurs at the same time as most dramatic irony since he lies about his fake names when he is in his other personas. Without irony being used, the readers wouldn't be able to connect ideas occurring in the novel with the characters. As Edmond Dantes loses his dignity, he takes a new role as Count of Monte Cristo and other personas that was only a secret to himself and the audience, which is a form of dramatic irony. After Dantes escaped from prison, he goes to Monsieur Marseilles and tells him that he was "the head clerk of the firm of Thomson and French,"(Dumas 111) whose role he uses to buy an investment. Here he disguises himself as the head clerk of the firm of Thompson and French to prevent others from knowing, which is dramatic irony since the audience knows something that the characters in the novel don't. Not only were his personas a form of dramatic irony, but incidents that occured after Edmond's imprisonment were also a type of dramatic irony. Noirtier had hidden the fact that he "killed [Frank's father]"(Dumas 310) from Franz, which is a form of dramatic irony since the audience knew about it. Through this fact, the reader can view Noirtier as very dangerous individual but also as a protective grandparent since he hid this fact from Valentine to protect her. Later, Caderousse and Andrea plans a robbery that will take place inthe Count of Monte Cristo's house, but this robbery didn't stay a secret for long. The Count of Monte Cristo was given a letter that warned him of an upcoming robbery, and the Count inferred that "they want to kill me,"(Dumas 330) which led him to be prepared. Dumas uses dramatic irony here because it leads the Count to be prepared without Caderousse knowing, which ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 10. What Is The Dramatic Irony In The Cask Of Amontillado Edgar Allan Poe, an American born writer and poet during the early 19th century, is known for his dark and twisted diction that continues to captivate readers to this day. Nearly all of Poe's stories contain hidden symbolism and themes that entice readers to discover the secrets in his writings over a hundred years later and the "Cask of Amontillado" is no different. Written in November of 1846, nearly three years before Poe's death, "The Cask of Amontillado" is often regarded as one of Poe's master pieces, full of symbolism and dramatic irony. (Poe 5–6) and Fortunato persisted to continue, ultimately his death. Despite being the fortunate one, Fortunato lead himself to his own demise. Montresor's lust for revenge goes all the way back to his family crest "No one Provokes me with impunity." This highlights how Montresor feels like he needs to get revenge to keep his family name intact. Furthermore, there are also many ironic parallels made between the story and Catholic rituals. Montresor wears a roquelaire covering both his face and the back of his head. Looking like a hood, sleek, black executioner, Montresor resembles death while in contract Fortunato. In contrast Fortunato is dressed in motley carnival garb like a fool or clown (Clendenning). Coincidentally, after leading Fortunato to his grave by burning him alive as he laid the last brick he finished by shouting "for the love of god" (Poe 10) where Fortunato would lay for 50 years. • 11. Dramatic Irony In The Cask Of Amontillado By Edgar Allan Poe Dramatic irony is generally defined as irony in which a character kens less about his or her situation than the reader kens, engendering situations that have a different outcome from the character's prospects. It is as if we are visually examining a train moving relentlessly toward a brick wall, which one or more characters perceive as an open tunnel. A wreck is the only outcome. Poe establishes the framework of dramaticirony as early as the story's second paragraph, engendering a web of erroneous prospects for his victim. For example: "It must be understood that neither by word nor deed had I given [Fortunato] cause to doubt my good–will. I perpetuated, as was my won't, to smile in his face, and he did not perceive that my smile now was at the noetic conception of his immolation." (Poe). In my opinion Montresor has engendered two elements of dramatic irony here. On one hand I understand that Fortunato, because of the unidentified insult has been illuded into ... The life back then was different as all the people were placed into categories from the lower to upper class and they all were treated accordingly to their position. This play was very important as Priestley was a socialist and wanted everyone to be treated equally and spread socialism in the world so no one faces unfairness as this was Priestley's political view. This creates a tension for the audience that is more serious than a normal inspector, who won't just come there just like that, but with purposefulness and reasons. J.B Priestley has chosen the inspector's name "Goole" as Priestly also made the inspector seem as a ghost or a ghoul, as the name Goole mostly refers to a ghost. In Death and the Maiden, Ariel Dorfman uses this literary device to the maximum, exploring all the different ways he can make the reader predict or foresee what's going to happen next. However, Dorfman also takes on the audience's ideas and implements dramatic irony, giving the plot a twist of events and making the audience question themselves and their own theories as to why the character acts that way or why the author set things as they are. Ironically, later she refers to him as 'my little man', contrasting with how he called her, and making sure that Gerardo knows that he is her husband, and she's in charge. Furthermore, Dorfman shows the dramatic irony in the gender roles once Paulina finds out about Doctor Miranda and gets the gun. At the beginning of the play, the gun was a sign of safety and security, and by the climax, she uses the gun to manipulate Roberto and Gerardo to do what she wants, and what she thinks is 'fair'. GERARDO: Paulina, I'm asking you to please give me that gun. PAULINA: No. GERARDO: While you point it at me, there is no possible dialogue. Dramatic irony is "irony that is inherent in speeches or a situation of a drama and is understood by the audience but not grasped by the characters in the play." that happens many times in The Odyssey. .The first example is when the readers know the men have wax in their ears, but the Sirens don't. • 15. Dramatic Irony In Twelfth Night In the play Twelfth Night, Shakespeare uses dramatic irony to develop the comedic effect in the characters relationships. The use of dramatic irony produces most of the comedic effect by revealing situations and relationships to the audience, but not the cast. Developing the plot with this literary device provides comedic and ironic situations while engaging the audience. Including situations and relationships that are not fully revealed to the cast but are obvious to the audience permits them to feel included or "in on it". Dramatic irony encompasses the love triangle between Cesario (Viola), Orsino and Olivia to involve the audience and create humor. After Orsino sees how young and attractive Cesario is, he sends her to win over Olivia without knowing the reality of the situation. In this scene, Cesario feels this task is of "a barful strife" for "whoe'er [she] woo, [she]would be his wife." (1.4.43) Revealing her true feelings for the Duke and Olivia proves her situation to be awkward and ironic because of her disguise. Providing her confession before Cesario actually talks to Olivia produces suspense and strengthens the dramatic irony towards the trio. Aside from the fact that Cesario is falling for a man who is already infatuated, Olivia begins to reveal her true feelings as well. Interpreting The Use Of Dramatic Irony In A Short Story Irony is used to convey a message that has the opposite meaning of its actual meaning, differentiating the appearance of things and reality. There is different types of irony as well: verbal, situational, and dramatic. Personally, once a friend of mine was walking with me on the bike path and tripped over a rock, falling to the ground. I instantaneously burst into laughter, instead of helping her up or even asking if she was okay. Why would this be ironic many may ask? Not even five minutes after this happened, I tripped (I am pretty sure there was nothing there for me to trip over) an fell to the ground. I never intended or planned on tripping, which makes the situation ironic. The situation ended quite differently than I had anticipated. There are several types of literary irony present throughout this story, such as situational, dramatic, and verbal. Irony can influence the portrayal of a character in a story. Irony can also add intrigue and excitement to the plot of the story. In Edgar Allen Poe's story, he uses the literary element ofirony to add to the plot and influence how the characters are portrayed throughout his story. One of the first examples Poe uses is situational irony in the title. Situational irony is when something turns out to be the opposite of what is expected. The title, "The Cask of Amontillado", leads the reader to believe that a wine container or crate will be the topic of the story. After reading the story, however, the reader finds that there is actually no sort of cask of Amontillado, sherry, or any other wine. However, if the reader closely analyzes the title, an understanding of the irony soon emerges. This leads the reader to believe that something great or lucky will come to Fortunato in the story, but that is not the case ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Sophocles use of different types of irony throughout his play allowed him to create a popular play. Irony can be best defined as that middle ground between what is said and what is meant, or others understanding of what was said and what was meant. Irony can be broken down into three different types: Dramatic, Verbal, and Situational.Sophocles enriched his play, Oedipus Rex, with irony to develop an easily understood and intriguing story. Dramatic irony can be found all throughout the play to keep the readers entertained with information the characters do not know. Dramatic irony occurs when the readers are fully aware of the meaning of the character's actions and words but the character itself is unaware. During the play, Oedipus is responsible for killing his father, Laius. Oedipus then marries his mother, Jocasta, and has children. Oedipus is unaware of the situation that is occurring due to his fate. Since Oedipus is the new town King, he responds to the tragic death of King Laius appropriately. In Sophocles play, Oedipus states, "Whoever killed King Laius might– who knows? – lay violent hands even on me – and soon. I act for the murdered king in my own interest" (1.1.141–143).
  • 31. Dramatic Irony In The Cask Of Amontillado It is known that Edgar Allan Poe was a short story writer, novelist, essayist, poet and an editor. His background created a foundation in short fiction and the effects of it. In Poe's short story, "The Cask of Amontillado" he tells a short story of great tension and revenge. The author uses many different literary elements in his story including irony. This entire story is built from the bottom up of ironic situations and things. The title for instance has the word Cask which means a barrel of wine. The word cask is also short for the word casket which can be also known as a coffin, so the author is setting the story up already by the title meaning it will be about the casket of Amontillado. There are two types of irony that are used in this story, verbal and dramatic irony. An example of dramatic irony is when the reader themselves learn about what is about to become of Fortunato who is too intoxicated to realize what is going on and still goes into the catacombs in search of the Amontillado. Poe continues to further drag out the irony when he named one of the main characters Fortunato when in fact he is a man of misfortune. Also Fortunato is dressed up in a fool's costume since in fact Montresor will in fact make a fool of him that is all a part of his plan. Charles N. Nevi writes about why Fortunato is dressed the way he is and that "Fortunato's dress is ironic, for a jester is not just a man to be laughed at; he is a man who makes others laugh by being aware of the ... • 32. Examples Of Dramatic Irony In The Masque Of The Red Death In the same way, dramatic irony is when the reader knows something that the characters do not, which causes the reader to fear or dread what they suspect will happen. The first indication of dramatic irony is in "Masque of the Red Death" when the black room with the blood red windows is described. This description creates a bad feeling about the room and the reader senses something bad will happen in that room. This idea is proven later when the Prince dies in that room. Another example of dramatic irony is demonstrated in "Terrible Things" when Bunting writes "'We have come for any creature that is white," the Terrible Things thundered. "There are no white creatures here but us"'(Bunting, Three). This quotation illustrates dramatic irony ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another example of dramatic irony is demonstrated in "Terrible Things" when Bunting writes "'We have come for any creature that is white," the Terrible Things thundered. "There are no white creatures here but us"'(Bunting, Three). This quotation illustrates dramatic irony because the rabbits do not understand that the Terrible Things are there for them, but the reader has this realization. This alarms the readers and causes one to dread what will happen to the rabbits. One more example of how dramatic irony builds suspense in stories is in "The Lottery" when Tessie says "'I think we ought to start over" Mrs. Hutchinson said... I tell you it wasn't fair... you didn't give him enough time. Everybody saw that'" (Jackson, Four). This quotation is a good example of dramatic irony because when Tessie started causing a scene the reader begins to suspect that she will be the one who is chosen. This is significant because her pleading adds to the audience's fear of not knowing what will happen to the person who is ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

In the play A Midsummer Night's Dream there is a lot of irony. There are three types of irony. Dramatic, verbal and situation. There is verbal and dramatic. Oberon puts love potion into her eyes, making her fall in love with the first person she sees when she awakes. This person was bottom while he was turned into an ass. • 34. Examples Of Dramatic Irony In Ethan Frome Pentheus foolishly suspects that the stranger is weak based solely on his effeminate appearance. The audience is quickly made aware of Pentheus' ignorance in expecting the conventional, because they know that Dionysus is far from it. The king's shallowness proves to be fatal when he is convinced to enter the domain of the Bacchae and is brutally killed by them, just as Dionysus had planned. Euripides and many of his contemporaries were masters of dramatic irony. Another example of dramatic irony lies in Edith Wharton's novel Ethan Frome. The author reveals in the prologue that Ethan remains in Starkville after sustaining a serious injury from a mysterious accident. Although the details are unclear, when Ethan expresses his desire for freedom and a life away from the cold and bitter town, The reader is well aware that he does not get the happy ending he wants so desperately. The most obvious example of dramatic irony present in The Scarlet Letter, is the fictitious friendship between Arthur Dimmesdale and Rodger Chillingworth. Hawthorne reveals early in the novel that the reverend is in fact Pearl's father. In an exchange between Hester and Chillingworth, he discloses his plans to take vengeance on her lover. Chillingworth, Hester's husband, remarks "I shall make him tremble" (Hawthorne 71). • 37. Dramatic Irony In Night By Elie Wiesel Corpses – Corpses in the novel is another symbol representing the living dead. Captives in the camp ware frequently referred to as corpses, whose spirits have been crushed by torment and misery. Eliezer at the end of the narrative looks in the mirror and sees a corpse, which symbolizes the death of innocence and childhood. "One day I was able to get up, after gathering all my strength. I wanted to see myself in the mirror hanging on the opposite wall. I had not seen myself since the ghetto. From the depths of the mirror, a corpse gazed back at me. The look in his eyes, as they stared into mine, has never left me" (Wiesel, 115) Foreshadowing Foreshadowing is a literary technique which is used by authors to give an advance hint of the upcoming events that will occur later in the story. There are three types of Ironies employed in the novel: Dramatic irony, verbal irony, situational irony. Dramatic irony occurs when the reader knows the outcome of the situation while the character fails to perceive it. The most evident example of dramatic irony is seen in the first section with the reaction Moshe the Beadle receives upon coming back to Sighet. Moshe who lived through horrifying atrocity had only one desire of letting others know what horror awaited and wanted to help them escape. Yet, people's reaction to him is that of distrust, derision and rebuff. It is particularly ironic as he sits broken not because of the Nazis but because of his own people. Another example of verbal irony is when, after the Jews are ordered to wear yellow stars, Elie's father says, "The yellow star? So what? It's not lethal..."(Wiesel, 11) the statement is ironic because that is exactly how Elie's father dies. The wearing of the yellow star was one step on the path to the concentration camps and almost certain ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 38. Dramatic Irony In The Lady In Davao The two ironies I have observed from the material was when Marjorie told Jimmy has to leave her house in Davao just as he leans in to kiss her and she reciprocates the kiss. This is a type of verbal irony wherein Marjorie says something but does the exact opposite of it because she has romantic feelings for the husband of her best friend, Sylvia. A dramaticirony is also shown in the play when Jimmy and Marjorie were flirting with each other in Sylvia's house while Sylvia and her mother were behind the couch observing everything. One foreshadowing instance was when Marjorie finally agreed to try and seduce Jimmy. Sylvia left the two alone and after an awkward conversation, the two intently looked at each other for quite some time. From this ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... She later realized that Citas, their house help, was the one taking the pills because she had an intimate relationship with the family driver. Back in the day, taking birth control pills was considered a taboo. Filipinos find it nonsensical to use because there is no need to prevent a pregnancy unless you are having an affair or you work at a brothel, most especially for a married woman like Sylvia. It was quite important that all women portray and uphold the values of a "dalagang Filipina" which is demure and submissive to the husband or men in general. Nowadays, women are very outspoken in terms of their rights to act according to what they think is appropriate as an individual. Another dated material shown in the play was when Marjorie was showing the 3 possible ending of the story, one of the scenes was quite vulgar as it showed Marjorie, Sylvia and Jimmy caught in a sexual act together. The scenario can also be considered a taboo back in the day as having a sexual relationship was restricted to married men and women only otherwise they would be mocked by the society. Nowadays, pre–marital sex seems to be the trend, one can be involved with any other person, regardless of the gender and marital status. Additionally, such relationships were not mentioned in public conversations, it was only discussed among close friends but now it has ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Dramatic irony is when the character does not realize the reality or truth of a situation and the audience does because the author has presented clues to the audience. In the episode, "Meeting of Father and Son", Homer uses dramatic irony in order for his audience to feel suspense and infer the significant meaning of his text. Homers audience was the people of ancient Greece who were actively listening to his great epic.
