The Duma also refused orders to dissolve, and 12 of its members formed a committee that planned to take over Russia; the called themselves 'The
Provisional Government'. The soviets also issued 'Order number 1' which demanded that all officers in the army be elected by their men, proving
that the Tsar had lost all of his power. Therefore, there were many factors involved in the Tsar's downfall, such as the political opposition, strikes and
the disloyalty of the army and the Duma. Once people started to support the other political parties, they lost all loyalty for the 'God appointed' Tsar.
The strikes highlighted the weaknesses of the Tsar's leadership skills and proved that he couldn't no longer control and rule Russia. The disloyalty of
the army and the Duma completely removed all of his power, meaning that Nicholas could no longer be Tsar.

inability to effectively rule a country caused his downfall. Nicholas failed to trust key advisors such as Witte and Stolypin and despite him issuing the

repression when the Soviet government first ordered deportations in 1941 and when deportations began again when Soviet occupation of Latvia
returned in the October of 1944. With the signing of the German–Soviet Non–aggression Pact in 1939, the Soviet Union gained a sphere of influence
over west Poland and the Baltic States. On June 16th, 1940, the Latvian government received an ultimatum from the Soviet government. The Soviet
government instructed them to form a new government that would comply with the implementation a Soviet–Latvian mutual assistance pact and to

My Latvian heritage is not a direct line, but it none the less is important to me just as any of our inherited genealogy. Latvija is derived from the name
of the ancient Latgalians, one of four Indo–European Baltic tribes, which formed the ethnic core of modern Latvians together with the Finnic
Livonians. Henry of Latvia coined the Latinisations of the country's name, "Lettigallia" and "Lethia", both derived from the Latgalians. The terms
inspired the variations on the country's name in Romance languages from "Letonia" and in several Germanic languages from "Lettland".
Around 3000 BC, the proto–Baltic ancestors of the Latvian people settled on the eastern coast of the Baltic Sea. The Balts established trade routes to
Rome and Byzantium, trading local amber for precious metals. By 900 AD, four distinct Baltic tribes inhabited Latvia: Curonians, Latgalians,
Selonians, Semigallians, as well as the Livonians speaking a Finnic language.
In the 12th century in the territory of Latvia, there were 14 lands with their rulers: Vanema, Ventava, Bandava, Piemar.
Although the local people had had contact with the outside world for centuries, they became more fully integrated into the European socio–political
system in the 12th century. The first missionaries, sent by the Pope, sailed up the Daugava River in the late 12th century, seeking converts. The local
people, however, did not convert to Christianity as readily as the Church had hoped.
In the beginning of the 13th century, Germans ruled large parts of today's Latvia. Fighting continued sporadically between Sweden and Poland until the

World War I devastated the territory of what became the state of Latvia, and other western parts of the Russian Empire. Demands for
self–determination were initially confined to autonomy, until a power vacuum was created by the Russian Revolution in 1917, followed by the Treaty

The novel initially began in Lithuania in the home of Lina and her family. As the story progresses they are herded into train cars in a scene of panic
and chaos. The train cars are described as very filthy, congested, dark, and odorous, causing claustrophobia and possibly dementia. The train cars
move north and they finally arrive in Siberia where it is barren, dim, and completely isolated from major cities. They are relocated to a plantation for
vegetables where they are worked like cattle and given little to no food. Throughout the story, Lina's thoughts turn into flashbacks where the setting is
constantly changing. After a year goes by they are deported into the Arctic zone of
Siberia, completely isolated from the rest of the world and forced to work in 6 months of darkness and below freezing temperatures. They live in these
conditions for 12 years until finally the Soviet's tyrannical regime comes to an end and Lina and the other survivors are able to return to Lithuania.
Between Shades of Gray is much more than the resistance of a single person. It is more than just telling and reliving all of the roughness and malicious
sides of humanity.
