After researching indie iconography we found that simplicity and finding detail in natural surroundings is the key to giving something a more indie vibe.
simplistic shapes and nature are associated with indie iconography. Finding the beauty in something simple is also associated with being indie. This is something we knew we would have to focus on for our music video as we shall be focusing on the fine details. In order to do this we would use slow motion and steady close up shots to create a personal connection between the aesthetically pleasing image and the audience.
The composition of indie images are all very similar also. The colours tend to be slightly hazed or drained and this is something we shall add into our music video to give it that iconic indie edge.
For camera and editing we had a look at a few indie based music videos including “West Coast” by Lana Del Ray and “Sweater Weather” by the Neighborhood. These inspired us in the way that we commonly saw that simple images were flipped or edited to make something a lot more visually interesting. An example of this is in the music video for the song “Sweater Weather” they paint a simple house on a white screen and then it gets edited so it flips upside down and makes the audience contemplate the deeper meaning behind this. The use of combining film and art is common in Indies and is a technique we will use in our own video.
A typical indie star has a way about attracting their fans by setting trends and having values outside of the norm. An example is the lead singer of ‘Arcade Fire’ who created a campaign to promote veganism to his fans. This relates to Richard Dyer's theory of star image and how stars wish to be seen in the media. Indie stars and especially indie rock stars, want to be seen as different and unique. This is through having views and ideas that are seen as particularly unusual. Indie stars have an artist persona that is shown through their image and senses of fashion, they tend to sway towards vintage fashion.
Indie rock bands tend to not have a set way about how they perform, they still take their star value and use instruments that aren’t particularly mainstream. For example, bringing instruments like the saxophone which isn’t typical of a rock group to use. This fits in with the stars being seen as extraordinary in their ways of performing. The mannerisms that they portray in their performance tend to be ones of people that don’t care about what anyone else thinks, this relating back to their star image that’s typical of the genre. The grain of voice that indie rock stars tend to have is softer than those of normal rock stars. This is shown through the range of styles the band can have such as soft rock indie and indie rock.
All of these digipaks for indie rock bands have an artistic element to them and a common tendency to combine photography with graphic design, showing the combination with reality and imagination. The colours in the pictures tend to be block with a faded tint to them, this reflects the way that the genre isn’t completely clear to those who aren’t willing to understand. For our use of digipaks we will take this common theme on board and adapt it to our chosen song and artist.
