The Motivation Theory

                    The Motivation Theory says
that most people are driven by
                   their values, beliefs, fear, and
                         personal interests.

            There are two types of
                motivation…
          INTERNAL and EXTERNAL
Internal Motivation
I decided to focus on Motivation Theory because when a leader has to motivate
someone, I believe it draws the two closer. Playing off of peoples values, beliefs,
interests, and fears can be very personal. At the majority of jobs I’ve had, I enjoy
                           being close with coworkers.
On this slide are the Internal Motivations that are most popular/the reason
behind why people do what they do!

                          • Motivation through Challenges
                              • Motivation through Curiosity
                              • Motivation through Control
                              • Motivation through Fantasy
                         • Motivation through Competition
                         • Motivation through Cooperation
                         • Motivation through Recognition
Focusing of Internal Motivators
Because there are so many internal motivators, I picked a few to go into detail with…

Motivation through Challenges
Working with Marines, I found that presenting tasks as a “challenge” has worked
for my benefit. With a mentality that they can do anything, I challenge them to organize
the storage unit in one day or recruit 20 volunteers in three days. They always put in their
best!

Motivation through Competition
At the Front Desk of the hotel I work at, our managers know we are all looking to
make extra cash. They motivate us to upsell rooms or book reservations at our restaurant by
offering a cash incentive.

Motivation through Recognition
Again, when working with Marines, they can be very motivated to accomplish a
task if there is some sort of recognition. At my job, we have a lot of volunteer events that
require dirty work. We motivate the Marines to help us by offering a Letter of Appreciation
(LOA). With the LOAs, Marines can collect so many volunteer hours and it helps them get
recognized and possibly promoted.
External Motivation
When talking about External Motivation, most of the information was
regarding conversations with employees. Having an open dialog for peoples
wants and needs will better help the employer motivate their team!

                        • Employee Motivation
                • Figuring Out What Motivates Others

                  the end
