The class worked on a project about global citizenship and food/trade issues. They debated different perspectives and decided to promote fair trade goods. The students designed their own fair trade snacks using ethical ingredients. They created packaging and hosted a fair trade afternoon tea party event for families. Their goal was to raise awareness of fair trade products and encourage others to support these types of goods.
2. We used the
diamond 9
strategy for
the ‘Global
Citizens’
statements.
Many of us
had different
opinions but a
lot of us put
‘I think I can
change things
in the world’
3. After all of our introduction
activities we decided we wanted to
look at Food and Trade in more
detail.
We tried out some of the activities
and learned a lot about ourselves
5. We can make a change!
After all of our work we decided that we can make
a change to things in the world, even if it is only a
little change.
So we set about thinking what we could do and who
could help us.
6. We worked in groups to think
about the some important
questions to help us.
We each had a role to play in
the ‘What can I change?’
challenge.
One person was the Teacher,
one was the Scribe, another
was the Time keeper and
then there was the
Spokesperson.
9. We had
some good
ideas about
what we can
change
about the
food issue
in Barrow,
the U.K.
and the
World.
It wasn’t
easy but it
really made
us think!
10. Who can help us?
We used the ‘Power and People’ exercise to look
at who can help us with our plans on taking
action.
We worked out that there were actually a lot of
people out there who can take part and help us!
11. We placed the
names of people
in order of who
would help us the
most to those
who we would get
least help from.
12.
13. So, we got started
on our big plan for
‘Taking Action’
14. We decided to promote Fairtrade
goods
Working in groups, we
thought about how to
do this.
We designed our own
Fairtrade snack
choosing which
ingredients we would
like to use.
15. After designing the
Fairtrade product we
designed the packaging
it would come in
carefully.
Everyone gave their
snack a unique name,
such as, ‘Crunchy
Munchy’ or ‘Rumbles’.
16. On the
packaging we
made sure
that we
included:
• The name
• Fairtrade
logo
• Image
• Adjectives
to
describe
it
22. Our idea to raise awareness of Fairtrade
products was to have a
Fairtrade Afternoon Tea Party.
We invited parents, families and Governors
to our Fairtrade event in the hope that we
could show them the importance of buying
Fairtrade goods.
