The table above shows that comedy has been the top grossing genre within
the last 15 years, with many successful films such as Meet The Fockers and
The Hangover.
Horror isn’t far behind comedy, with a total gross of
$8,560,128,560 from 1995 - 2010. On average, horror
films made a gross profit of $29,315,509, with a total
market share of 4.83%. This lower value in gross profit
could however been due to the simple fact that there
have been fewer horror films made within the last 15
years than there has comedy. Perhaps suggesting
that comedy is not only the top grossing film genre, but that the film instrustry
recognises this high demand from audiences and so continues to increase
their number in this particular genre.
Film institutions have become increasingly dependant on the success of an
original horror film in order to produce a sequal. Examples of which include
Saw, Paranormal Activity, The Ring, Scream and Final Destination; all of
which are some of the top ten grossing films at the box office within the last
15 years. In fact, Paranormal Activity 2 was the highest grossing horror film
in 2010 with over 10,000,000 tickets sold. Paramount Pictures and New Line
Cinema seem to be the two main institutions which produce horror films,
producing such films as Nightmare on Elm Street and Paranormal Activity.
