The Obligate Carnivore
Hunkered down and poised to pounce, fur glistening in the sunlight, the lithe feline watches its prey,
a small field mouse, with pupils reminiscent of a black hole. If one were to make a sudden
movement, the cat would probably flinch three feet into the air. This single–minded focus is born
from what is arguably the most important aspect of feline physiology: their existence as obligate
carnivores. The obligate carnivore, unlike omnivorous humans and even domestic canines, is
designed by nature to consume a diet composed solely of raw flesh. Felines in their natural habitat
hunt small prey that is high in protein with moderate amounts of fat, and minimal to no carbohydrate
(CHO) (Zoran 1). Due to this unique physiology, felines do best when ... Show more content on

They have more energy than ever before, with many people reporting that even their senior cats
were running and playing like kittens again. There is less shedding, and the fur is fluffier, silkier,
and shinier. Perhaps most enticing to the human carer is the change in the cat's litter box habits. Cat
owners feeding commercial diets are well aware of the frequency and quantity of their pet's solid
waste. With species–appropriate diets, cats will urinate more, but will often only have a bowel
movement once every 2–3 days. This is because the cat is able to utilize a much higher percentage
of the food, and it takes longer for enough waste to build up to necessitate a bowel movement. Even
then, there will be less than a quarter of the amount seen in kibble fed cats, and there will be almost
no detectable odor (Pierson). The well–known stench of typical cat feces is an unfortunate result of
the fermentation of CHOs in the intestines (Zoran

Animal Captivity Dilemma
The Dilemma of Animal Captivity Animal captivity is an extremely important, and often overlooked
problem that we, as human beings, have placed on nature and the animals that live in the endangered
environment. There are groups of people worldwide who are extremely against animal captivity
because of the drastic and permanent effects it leaves on the animals. These ideas of hatred against
animal captivity are expressed in small ways such as posting a picture on Instagram that represents
animal cruelty in captivity. Another way these ideas can be expressed is through large
representations such as movies. Films such as Jurassic World and Blackfish are prime examples of
this. Both of these films are representing the severe repercussions that can come from keeping large,
dangerous animals in captivity. Though Jurassic World is a fictional movie, it is able to send the
message that having animals that are dangerous in captivity is something that is very dangerous.
Blackfish offers a real and terrifying glimpse into what happens to the mindset of animals who are
put into captivity and the threat that those animals pose to not only other animals in captivity but
also the humans who are in charge of looking after these animals. This problem of taking animals
away from their natural habitat and placing them in captivity is a prime example of how humanity is
trying to assert itself as dominant of everything else. Mankind has thought of itself as a "protector"
of the wild animals by

Carnivore Case
1. Suppose you found the bones of an unidentified animal. How could you learn about what the
animal ate? What specific structures would give you clues about the creature's diet: The first thing I
would look for is specific traits that would narrow down the two million species list. Secondly, what
kind of animals live in the area (lets say we are in Canada). Obviously an animal with a spine would
be a good indicator that the animal is either a carnivore or a herbivore. But if we really want to
know what an animal eats in general we have to look at the animal's teeth. Let's say this animal we
find has large flat molars fore specifically grinding up plant matter and cellulose. Then it would be
reasonable to assume that the animal we are looking at is a deer. If the jaw of the animal is capable
of moving side to side and not just up and down than it is reasonable to assume even without
looking at the teeth that this animal is a herbivore. If the animal's jaw can move only up and down,
we can safely guess that the animal is mainly a carnivore. Carnivores need strong locked jaws that
are incapable of shifting from side to side so when they are holding onto prey their jaws can't be
broken. Animal's that have large canine teeth with minimal molars are generally carnivores. This
jaw and teeth system isn't set in stone, humans have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Pick your favorite food. Describe what happens to it as it passes from your mouth to your colon.
What are the major steps along the way: My favorite food being watermelon will go on a relatively
quick trip through the digestive system. The first obvious stage is when the watermelon enters the
mouth, inside it is crushed by the teeth into an easy to swallow state of basically being water. When
it hits the bottom of the stomach, cell signaling will being and trigger the gastric juice to begin
digesting it further. Almost all the the sugar will be injected into the blood, and anything left over

Comparing The Digestive Systems Of A Carnivore
Comparing the digestive systems of a Carnivore, a hind gut fermenter and a ruminant In this report,
I will be explaining the efficiency of the different digestive systems, the pros and cons of each
digestive system, how all the food is broken down and how each digestive system is suitable for the
type of animal. All of the digestive systems start with the mouth where the food enters first. The
teeth in a carnivore's mouth are designed to eat meat so they have evolved to have sharp and strong
teeth, this makes it easy to rip and tear meat from bones of prey. This makes the carnivore more
efficient at killing live prey than hindgut fermenters and ruminants. Hindgut fermenters teeth are
designed to eat grains and grasses, for example a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
These parts evolved over time to suit the animal's needs. For example, some ruminant's lips are
designed to be relatively immobile and use its tongue to grasp a clump of grass and then bite it off.
Similarly, a hindgut fermenter uses its tongue to help grasp onto the plant and then uses its teeth and
mouth to rip it out of the ground to eat. However, a carnivore's food spends little time in the mouth
so its lips and tongue isn't used as much as the ruminants or hind gut fermenters. Before the food
goes down the oesophagus, saliva in the animal's mouth is used to help the food break down quicker
and it's used to moisten the food so it goes down the oesophagus better. As the animals were
evolving, a ruminant's saliva started to produce large amounts of alkaline saliva, which contains a
little amylase to help break down starch, this is helpful for the ruminants as it can help break down
their food a lot quicker in the mouth, whereas true carnivores do not have any digestive enzymes
(amylase) in their saliva as they have a diet consisting of protein which amylase won't break down.
So this means the ruminant is more efficient at digesting starch than a carnivore as amylase is found
in the saliva on non–ruminant herbivores and, to a lesser extent, carnivores as well. All animals of
all digestive systems have an oesophagus. The oesophagus is a tube,

Burmese Pythons In The Everglades
Burmese Pythons
Taking over with no natural predator, the Burmese Python. These very large pythons have been
effecting our Everglades drastically. Once native to the swampy marshes of Southeast Asia, these
snakes are now migrating over to Florida. Being so large and having no natural predator, they have
really made a strong change in our Florida wildlife. These dangerous pythons have altered the
population of animals in the Everglades by so much that people are beginning to worry about what
will happen next. The snakes didn't get there on their own, but now we don't have any way of
stopping them.
Burmese Pythons are definitely astonishing creatures. Native to Southeast Asia's version of the
Everglades, these pythons are very exotic. These pythons reach sizes of up to 23 feet which makes
them one of the largest snakes in the world! "In short order, those little fellows grew to eight feet, 12

they got too big, the pet owners released them into the wild were they could now roam free. Also,
some people owned exotic animal warehouses which stored many of these snakes. One warehouse
where a hurricane hit, the snakes were all let loose due to destruction of what kept them from
escaping. They were supposed to stay in South Africa, which was originally where they came from,
but have slowly migrated over to Florida and their population is growing rapidly. These animals are
non–native and have been causing lots of damage to our land and animals because they do not
belong here. In this quote it explains how a hurricane played a big role in the spread of these
pythons. "Many believe that Hurricane Andrew played a role in the spread of the snakes. When the

Why Do We Need Large Carnivores?
Large carnivores tend to possess certain features that make them particularly vulnerable to human
disturbance, and consequently, reduced survival. One major characteristic of many species of large
carnivores is that they require large home ranges. Populations of individuals or social groups that
forage over wide areas are prone to decline as a result of habitat degradation or fragmentation by
human activity (Textbook pg. 161). Animal species with large bodies also tend to have low
reproductive rates, impeding the ability of their populations to recover following human disruption
that reduces the population size (Textbook pg. 161). Furthermore, large carnivores generally need
more food to survive than small–bodied animals. These nutritional requirements increase their
vulnerability to human disturbance because a reduction in prey populations or habitat size could
decrease hunting success and result in starvation (Textbook pg. 161). In addition, top carnivores are
also frequently killed by humans for a variety of reasons, including for sport, because they compete
with humans for wild game, or because they damage livestock (Textbook pg. 41, 161). Although
human activity has caused sizable declines in populations of large carnivores, many of these
populations remain extant. One reason this may occur ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
45). Many recent conservation efforts have aimed at protecting these keystone predators because the
loss of these species has the potential to powerfully alter the ecosystems in which they reside
(Textbook pg. 47). For example, the gray wolf, a keystone species, has been a focus of conservation
in Yellowstone National Park since their extirpation caused population booms in ungulate species
and resulted in overgrazing of the vegetation (Textbook pg.

Diversity and Abundance of Scavenger Species in Seagrass Beds
Diversity and abundance of scavenger species in seagrass beds in comparison to intertidal flat
zonations in estuarine environments.
Introduction
Scavenger species that live in estuarine environments, are organisms that niche in the trophic
structure just before detritivores. The energy and nutrients broken down, is then passed back into the
ecosystem, where the detritivores further complete the breakdown process of organic matter. They
are opportunists when it comes to their diet, scrounging for any organic material to eat, which can
place immense pressure on the organism to survive, if essential resources are deficient. Scavengers
are herbivoric and carnivorous, allowing them to nourish on any organic matter available to them,
whether they be dead or living. (Nielsena & A.Gosselina, 2011).
Intertidal (mud) flats are shielded intertidal and shallow sub tidal areas (Quinn, 2014), with
significant ecosystems that provide a diversity of highly productive, environmental habitats that are
essential sources of food for fish during times of high tide, and for birds in low tide. The sediment
composition of intertidal flats depends on the "interactions between the physical, chemical and
biological processes" (Widdows, et al., 2004), but the sediment if mainly fine particles and mostly
muds. The sediment itself can also either have vegetation growth or be a completely bare flat region.

Carnivore: Determining In Yellowstone National Park
The Holocene is long gone and the Anthropocene, an epoch marked by human progress and
environmental decay, has begun. Pronounced human activity has led to rising carbon dioxide,
nitrogen, and methane concentrations that disproportionately affect terrestrial and marine life
(Kolbert 108). We have outcompeted marine predators with our fisheries and led many to extinction
with our fertilization practices. Horrified, the Conservation Movement has attempted to influence
the way Americans act towards nature, but its mission; to "preserve and protect America's wildlife"
remains an idea that the average citizen is a stranger to. In view of a possible "Sixth Extinction," it is
imperative that biodiversity is preserved by incorporating rewilding techniques ... Show more

One of the best examples of these ecological benefits can be seen in Yellowstone National Park.
Wild wolves inhabited Yellowstone at the beginning of the nineteenth century, when the concept of
what could be called "natural" excluded carnivores. Overhunting, greatly supported by the
government, eliminated wolves from Yellowstone National Park. As predicted by the mere concept
of rewilding, things didn't go well in Yellowstone. After the wolves were gone, elks began
overgrazing, causing the erosion of the soil (Ripple & Beschta 7). They slowed the growth of
willow, cottonwood, berry–producing shrubs, and aspen, which in turn, led to beaver emigration and
bear population to decline (Soule & Noss 6). Once gray wolves were reintroduced into Yellowstone
in 1995 (Ripple & Beschta 1), the opposite was observed. Wolves reduced elk population and
restrained their area of grazing, leading to increasing numbers of cottonwood, aspen, and willow (
institute of research undergrad). Moreover, beavers, which "create more ponds, which provide
habitat for streamside trees, which creates more habitats for nesting birds, and so on" (undergraduate
research) returned. To this day cougars are still returning to Yellowstone and bird, as well as bear
populations have dramatically increased. This example demonstrates how the mere reintroduction of

The Giant Panda and the Polar Bear
According to a reliable website" The giant panda is a well known and well–loved species that is
being driven to extinction by habitat loss. It has become one of the most endangered mammals in the
world, with only 1,600 of them left" (Exploring nature education). Also According to another
credible website about polar bears, "Polar bears might not be endangered but they are one category
off of becoming endangered, there are 20,000–25,000 left worldwide" (animalpawnation). As you
can see the Giant panda is classified as endangered. There are only about 1,600 left in the world.
1,600 may be a lot but surprisingly not to many scientists and researchers. On the other hand polar
bears are classified as threatened one step away from becoming endangered. There are only about
20,000– 25,000 left worldwide.Other than being endangered and threatened they also share many
similar characteristics. The giant panda and polar bear are both similar and different in their physical
qualities, habitat, and diet. As members of the mammal family, the giant panda and the polar bear
share many of the same physical characteristics. On the other hand their appearances set them apart
from one another in many ways. To start with pandas and polar bears are well alike and different in
many ways. When being born pandas are about 15–17 centimeters long. Polar bears on the other
hand though are born about 30–35 centimeters long. Pandas over the time grow and are white with
big black spots around their body.

Dietary Analysis of Sympatric Mammalian Carnivores in the...
Resource partitioning occurs amongst animals that share the same resources, such as food and space
(Shoener 1974), and allows for their coexistence (May 1973). The different utilization of spatial,
temporal, and trophic niches between sympatric species allows for their partitioning of resources
(Jácomo et al. 2004). Difference in body mass is one of the factors that contribute to the coexistence
of species in that different sized animals will generally eat different sized food items, therefore
utilizing different resources and reducing competition (Wilson 1975; Jácomo et al. 2004). In the case
of predatory carnivores, as predator body mass increases, the size of their prey increases (Gittleman

The diets of the remaining mesocarnivores are relatively similar in that they all primarily prey on
small to medium sized lagomorphs and rodents, with fishers having an affinity for porcupines. The
remainder of the mesocarnivore diet consists of reptiles, birds, carrion, and with the exception of
bobcats, fruit and insects (Cavallini et al. 2009). In this study, the diets of these carnivores in
Keweenaw County will be analyzed to determine prey partitioning through scat analyses and the use
of scent stations. Specifically, the hypotheses tested will be that black bears will consume primarily
plant material, gray wolves will feed primarily on large ungulates, and amongst the mesocarnivores,
predator body mass will correlate with prey size. In particular, the larger coyotes and bobcats will
feed primarily on medium–sized mammalian prey, such as snowshoe hares and cottontail rabbits,
and the smaller red foxes, fishers, and American martens will feed primarily on smaller prey, such as
voles, mice, and squirrels, along with porcupines in the fisher diet. Methods Study Area The 1,400

Cats Obligate Carnivores
Meat sits at the center of feline nutrition.
Cats are obligate carnivores.
Obligate carnivores are distinct from other predators because they absolutely must consume meat.
For them, meat isn't just a part of a varied diet. It's a biological necessity. From lions to ocelots to
domestic shorthairs, all cats are obligate carnivores. Other animals classified as obligate carnivores
are dolphins, sea lions, ferrets, and mink.
Because of their ancestral raw meat diets provided them, cats cannot produce certain meat–sourced
amino acids and vitamins. They're physically incapable of making them in their own bodies, but
they need them nevertheless. The only way for them to get the nutrients they require is through
eating meat.

They're not made to live on a plant–based diet, yet many cat foods are made with fruits and

requirements.
But meat is expensive and corn is cheap. Rice and potatoes are also cheap.
So they tend to show up in cat food more often than the real meat nourishment that your obligate
carnivore requires.
Some cat food manufacturers inflate protein content by packing the food with indigestible plant
protein.
Cats have high protein needs, so many cat food manufacturers add plant protein to create an

Even though this method has been successful on some case with small to medium size animals like

secondary problem if problematic carnivores are translocated into an area where other endangered

Stereotypes Of Dinosaurs
Through excavating in bone beds it has become apparent that dinosaurs were more than singular
animals and followed patterns displayed by many current animal groups when concerning family.
Dinosaurs had ranks within their herds and there where often struggles of territoriality, social
dominance, court–ship, and feeding (Tanke & Currie, 1998, pg. 181. These insights have been
gained from light tooth scars around the snout and on top of the skulls of many dinosaurs. While
family units where common among herbivores, theropods also had herds, though they where often
smaller in size. Among herbivores herding was often a means of protection for both adults but also
young and un–hatched eggs (pg. 167). However, one example of a smaller herd was among

Carnivore Evolution
Millions of years ago a dinosaur group, theropods, consisted of killing–machines like the T–Rex and
the velociraptor, but recent research has proven that these bloodthirsty carnivores evolved into birds,
trading their sharp teeth for beaks. This mind–blowing realization has confused many people for
years, but Amy Balanoff reported her findings to show proof of the line of evolutionary descent
from horrendous beast to feathery pet.
Balanoff worked with a team of evolutionary biologist, their leader being Shuo Wang, discovered
the loss of teeth for beaks were normal in growth process of theropods. As the dinosaurs would
grow, a beak would naturally grow across their face which would stop the formation of teeth. Wang
discovered through earlier ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
By conducting both comparative and statistical evidence on thousands of vertebrates, the team
hoped to find some understanding as to the characteristics of animals that develop beaks. Their
results showed that beaked animals are more likely to be hatched from eggs the embryos had a
structure on the tip of their snouts made of keratin, something found in fingernails; using this they
could break through the egg and then shortly after it would fall off. Josef Stiegler connected their
findings to the fossil records and stated that the transitions they saw in the jaw may have been the
start of this evolution from killer reptile to bird.
Obviously as this evolution progressed, the theropods would transition earlier and earlier until it
happened in the embryo stage. The team also hypothesized that a protein called BMP4 may have
stopped teeth from growing and start creating beaks, but Stiegler disagreed with this because he felt
like additional research needed to be conducted. Scientist Stephen Brusatte read the analysis and
thought the study is a great example of how fossil genetics can be used to show the comparisons
between modern birds today and terrible dinosaurs.
In my opinion, I don't find the study that far–fetched. I believe that this could be a possibility to how
we have birds today. Through evolution I find that the idea of dinosaurs developing beaks at the

physically ready and displaying a proper military image as well as donning the uniform right,
including the physical training uniform as a symbol of loyalty and commitment to service. These are
all principles that display what a leader with idealized influenced should do. In other words as it is
also known "talk the talk and walk the walk" or actually doing what we preach. Chief Colon–Lopez
(2013) notes, "Let your expectations be known, all while leading from the front and setting the
pace" (p. 6). He is charging the leaders to make sure that the airmen know what is expected of them
as well as to go out and be the example for them by setting the pace and let them emulate you. This
reflects what an idealized influenced leader should do. Chief Colon–Lopez is trying to change the
way our culture thinks and looks at our standards of physical training and dress and appearance. To
do this one of the first processes that we must take is to unfreeze which is the fist step to apply
change. This is intended to motivate subordinates and help them get ready for change by creating a
felt need for such

Vegetarian Pros And Cons
Padam Koirala
English–1101–438

Today, there are a numerous number of adults who are finding a dramatic increase in their health
problems. Over half of world population is carnivorous, that's almost 4 billion humans eating meat
on a daily base. Even though cruelty to an animal is live on air. People still seem heartless and does
not care about millions of livestock being slaughtered daily. There is a tremendous amount of
benefits and advantages of becoming vegetarian such as reduce the risk of cancer, heart decreases,
and low cholesterol level. Over the time scientist has scientifically proven that Eating meat is not a
healthy option because it increases the risk of various cancers, high blood pressure and can lead to
increase in heart attacks. Many people want to be vegetarian because, they want to stay healthy,
does not want to see cruelty to animals and because of their religion. Due to overconsumption of
meat in the United States, millions of innocent animals spend their lives being bred to either get fat
and be killed for human benefits. Furthermore, since their birth, innocent livestock are forced to
spend their entire life in a stall to produce milk and chickens in cages with hundreds of other poultry
to lay eggs their whole life in a confined cage. Not only that commercial farmers also use various
kinds of viruses to feed their animals to meet their customer demand. One might argue that if we
stop consuming meat product, there would be millions of people

Role Of Organisms On A Tropical Ecosystem
Part B – The Role of Organisms
A producer in a tropical ecosystem is the plants and trees. A primary consumer in a tropical
ecosystem is a squirrel. A secondary consumer in a tropical ecosystem is a jack rabbit. A tertiary
consumer in a tropical ecosystem is a mountain lion. A decomposer in a tropical ecosystem is
mushrooms, fungi and moss.
The predator is the Mountain Lion. The prey is the deer. So the predator and prey relationship is
between the mountain lion and the deer. The predator which is the mountain lion hunts for the deer
to survive and feed off. The mountain lion is a carnivore and is one of the few at the top of this
tropical food chain. The prey which is the deer is a herbivore and feeds of plants and trees.

Analysis Of The Book ' Vegan Cat Food '
Vegan Cat Food
The Ultimate Guide to Your Cats Health
The book is written to offer beneficial information on vegan foods for cats. Consequently, the
contents of the book are meant for educational purposes and not as a professional advice on the
subject discussed. While a lot of research from a wide array of sources has been used to produce this
book, the author and the publisher shall not assume liability of any kind with respect to any loss or

Introduction
Cats are among the earliest companions of men and have been kept as pets in several homesteads for
decades. The health of the cat is very important, and thus, the owner needs to make sure that the pet
is always in good vigor. Attainment of good heath transpires with the use of foods that have the right
ingredients needed by the cats. Mainly, a majority of the food that cats consume is a composition of
foodstuffs that their owners offer. However, some of the foodstuffs that individuals consume are not
recommended for the pet as they affect their health. Vegans and vegetarians are individuals, who do
not consume a number of animal products such as meat, milk, and in some instances, eggs.
Fundamentally, there is a wide range of vegan food that manufactures provide in the market for
various pets. It is vital that the individuals purchase vegan food manufactured by approved vendors
because a wrong choice in food leads to serious complications on the health of the

Which organisms (producers, herbivores, carnivores, or omnivore) would be the least numerous in
this food web? Explain Carnivores would be least numerous because it gets the least energy. This is
because the carnivore get the producers energy indirectly. There cannot be a large number of
carnivore without a lot of competition for food. 7. What would happen to your food web community
if: A)All of the producers died? Explain. If producers were to die there would be no way for animals
to get the energy they need to survive. Producers are vital for all organisms. If producers were to die,
soon all organisms would become extinct because of the fight for food, and lack of energy B)The
herbivores died? Explain. If the herbivores were to die, the producers would start to over populate.
The omnivores would still be a source of how to get energy for the carnivores. The some omnivores
might even adapt to become the ecosystems new herbivores. C) The decomposers vanished?
Explain. If the decomposers vanished waste and remains of dead organisms would start to pile up.
The nutrients that are in the waste and dead organisms would not be renewed back into the
ecosystem. Therefore the producers would not have enough nutrients since decomposers were not
there to make new

Polar Bear Is The Largest Land Carnivore
There may be other bears in the arctic, but the polar bear is the largest land carnivore in the Arctic
wilderness. The polar bear may look like any other bear, but they are unique in their own way, such
as their characteristics and behavior . The polar bear, has unique characteristics that make it stand
out the most compared to the other bears in its taxonomic group. The taxonomic group that the polar
bear falls under is the Ursidae Group ( Tanya Dewey and Phil Myers). Breaking it down even
further it goes down to genus, the genus of the polar bear is Ursus and it is derived from the latin
word ursus, meaning bear. It includes the widely distributed brown bear, polar bear, and black bear.
Next, the species for polar bears are maritimus, which means sea bear (Tanya Dewey and Phil
Myer). The polar bears taxonomic group, genus, and species are all important because they are
widely diverse compared to the other bears in the group. Each bear in the Ursidae Group is unique,
but they all have a lot in common. Bears are strong animals that vary in sizes, but they all have the
same strength. They can range from twenty–five to sixty–five kilograms or up to eight hundred
kilograms (Tanya Dewey and Phil Myers). In the wild it is most common for the males to be larger
than their female counterparts, sometimes in the wild there could be a male that is twice the size of
the female. When looking at each bear some characteristics that show on each one. Some include;

Dogs Are Basically Carnivores
Some dog owners don't pay much attention to their store–bought dog food, but a growing group is
pondering the feasibility of making their own meals for their dogs. Understanding the whys and
hows of this process can help you make an informed decision.
Dogs Are Basically Carnivores
Dogs are often classified as omnivores because they can eat a small amount of grains, fruits, and
vegetables. However, they tend to do their best on a meal that focuses heaviest on meat, including
bones, with a light mixture of grain and a few vegetables. This is why so many people are turning to
homemade diets.
Many commercially manufactured pet foods are filled with items that are designed more as a "filler"
and less as a method for promoting your dog's health.

Carnivores: Delicate Balance Between Pumas And Cheetahs
Carnivores rely on hunting animals for food, thus their survival depends on their ability to catch
their next meal. These carnivores often strive for the biggest prey, making food harder to attain and
increasing the overall energetic demand. Hunting becomes a game of stealth, fear and maintaining
energy levels (Brown et al. 1999). Two reports were done by Scantlebury et al. (Scantelbury et al.
2014) and Williams et al (Williams et al. 2014) and they looked at the delicate balance between the
depletion and replenishment of energy in order to survive. The study found that pumas and cheetahs
have different game strategies when it comes to hunting. Pumas prefer the sit and wait approach as
they would rather let the prey come to them, while cheetahs

Comparing Carnivores And The Immune System
Science Assessment
Question 1
The slice of apple enters the mouth, which is the first component of the digestive tract. Inside, the
teeth break the apple down into smaller pieces through chewing, which is a form of physical
digestion. The tongue moves it around in our mouth, and the salivary glands produce saliva which
mixes with the apple to begin the breaking–down process, which is called chemical digestion. The
enzyme in the saliva, called amylase, begins breaking down starch from the apple into sugars such
as glucose. There also other enzymes in our mouth that begin the digestion process and these include
lipase, which digests the very small amount of fats in the apple; mucin–which coats and lubricates
the food and bicarbonate ions which ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
A horse's stomach is small as it doesn't eat 3 large meals a day, instead it eats several smaller meals.
A herbivores' stomach (including a horses') is much smaller in comparison to a carnivore's stomach
as herbivores eat less in one go, therefore needing less processing of food at any one time, resulting
in smaller stomachs.
Liver: does not produce much uric acid.
Saliva: Contains digestive enzymes such as amylase which break down carbohydrates and starch
from the plant matter.
Large Intestine: Long, puckered and winding in order to slow down wastes with a high water
content, so there is time for the water and nutrients to be extracted from the waste and filtered back
into the bloodstream.
Mouth: developed, muscular tongue to move food around in the horses' mouth as well as smaller
mouths and molar teeth to grind the food down into 'swallowable' pieces.
–––A herbivore also has an enzyme which can digest cellulose, which is the main building block in
a plant's cell wall. Carnivores do not have this enzyme.

Carnivore Leadership Case Study
CMSgt Ramon Colon–Lopez also displays ethical leadership and critical thinking through the use of
ethical codes and intellectual integrity. In Carnivore Leadership, he uses the "Little Blue Book",
otherwise known as AFI 1–1, to establish ethical behaviors and positively affect the organizational
climate in the unit through the use of ethical codes. Chief Colon–Lopez (2013) notes, "Many
personnel have a fogged lens and we must help them see the problem they are failing to engage" (p.
2). He asks leaders to dive into AFI 1–1 and look into dress & appearance, physical fitness, and
military image in order to clear the fogged lens and better guide us. As leaders we need to look into

He asks us to use ethical codes to guide us into establishing a positive organizational climate.
Ethical leadership states, "ethical codes are intended to be central guides and references for users in
support of day–to–day decision–making...they're meant to clarify an organization's mission, values
and principles, linking them with standards of professional conduct" (BCEE, 2017c, p. 4). Ethical
codes help guide us in facing ethical dilemmas. Some of these codes encompass Air Force
Instructions otherwise known as AFI's. One example of these guides is AFI 1–1, which the Chief
instructs us to adhere to in order to tip the scale of an organization to the right. Within AFI 1–1 it
gives us clear and concise lines that instruct members of an organization on how to operate herein.
Chief Colon–Lopez is using these ethical codes in order to positively affect and improve the
organizational climate. In his excerpt, Chief Colon also asks of us to have intellectual integrity when
going about out business. He notes, "As individual Airmen, we have a duty and responsibility to be
ready at all times to perform our assigned mission––which is anything the Air Force asks us to
do...We have to pull our own weight"

Animals Save The Environment
Animals play key roles in the environment. They help keep natural process running smoothly.
Insects help in pollinating diverse plants around the world. Scavengers clean up the carcasses of
dead animals everywhere. There are also many different animals that help the environment by
recycling various human and animal products. Carnivores, omnivores, and herbivores also keep
each other with in the proper population limit. Many of these animals are part of each other's food
supplies as well. Since all of these animals help one another and us, why would we not want to
protect them? Some people might say that protecting animals waste money. The government spends
thousands of dollars on preserving habitats for animals all across our nation. They would say this
money could be better put to use. The schools need better equipment, roads are in awful conditions,
and our government is already in enough debt that they should not be spending any more than
necessary. The animal's welfare should be one of the last concerns the government has. They argue
that the animals only take up space in the world. With the human population always increasing, this
is space we could use to house people. The bigger cities are over filled as they are. If we could have
some people move out of those cities and build new ones. They could move to the places where the
national habitats are and create new, cleaner cities there. There are many more arguments that
people may make to stop the animal

The Pleistocene epoch was a time period of almost 2...
The Pleistocene epoch was a time period of almost 2 million years of repeating glaciation around the
globe. This epoch was known for its megafauna that roamed the Earth during the last great ice age.
Although this was a time of mass extinction for species that could not adapt to the climate changes,
many mammals and vertebrates that can be identified today were found during this time
(Zimmermann, 2013). The Pleistocene epoch is an important foundation for understanding life that
exists today, including carnivores, herbivores as well as the evolution of humans.
Fossil preservation has always been the most accurate way to determine what species lived during a
specific time period. Through correlations and radiometric dating, time periods ... Show more

It is estimated that mammoths had the largest biome on the plant at an estimated 1 square kilometer
per mammoth (Zimov, 2014). Herbivores of the time ranged from under 45 kilograms to well over
1000 kg, making for a wide range of diversity within the speciation (graph below). While many of
these mammals were preyed upon by the carnivores, some were simply too large to be killed by
single predators, causing them to be relatively immune to predation (Rodriguez, Alberdi, Azanza,
Prado, 2006). (Rodriguez, Alberdi, Azanza, Prado, 2006)
The herbivores of course needed grasses and trees to feed on though, which became difficult as
glaciation occurred cyclically causing for many to die from lack of
livable environments. As the herbivore mammals died off, so did the predators that relied on them as
a food source. While many of the herbivores became extinct during this time, others survived in
certain places better than others. Native horses of North America for example existed before the end
of the Pleistocene but disappear from the fossil record in that area. Horses as well as many other
mammals in a similar situation still exist around the globe but were wiped out from their original
habitats.
In addition to carnivore and herbivore mammals, there were also many different species of birds and
reptiles that existed. A common misconception is that dinosaurs lived during this time, but they had
gone extinct some 60 million years before the Pleistocene began. Some species of

An Alien On Earth And Hunted Humans
Question One: If an alien race landed on Earth and hunted humans, we would need many different
protection methods. The five methods I think would benefit humans the most in an alien invasion
would be: venom, speed, webbed feet, strong claws, and strong jaws. Venom would be very
important for my protection because I would rather kill the aliens, instead of avoiding them. In order
to inject venom into the aliens, humans would need to have sharper teeth. I would sneak up on an
alien and bite them. This could immobilize the alien once the venom affects them. Two animals that
utilize venom are spiders and snakes. Speed would be another important protection method because
if a group of aliens were chasing you, they would not be able to keep up with your incredible speed.
If you were traveling in a large group, you could all go separate directions and confuse the aliens.
They would not be able to keep track of everyone or even be able to catch up to any human. This
would also include the speed of climbing things, such as trees and mountains. Two animals that
utilize this method of protection are the cobra and the rattlesnake. Webbed feet would also be an
important protection method for humans if they were being hunted by aliens. Webbed feet are
helpful for swimming and would allow humans to swim quickly away from the predators. Webbed
feet would make our feet look a lot different than they do now. We would walk differently with
webbed feet, but would swim very fast. I am a slow

Burmese Pythons Effects On The Everglades And The Ecosystem
Burmese Pythons Do you think pythons are scary? Well if you aren't then you will be as soon as you
finish this book. The Burmese pythons is a very long and wide animal. Yes, people has them as pets.
But that dangerous to keep them. Those snakes size up and can possibly eat you. Just think what
kind of effect it has on the everglades and the ecosystem.
Although, the Everglades is a very special and cool place. But there are way too many pythons there
and we need a way to get them out, because it's hurting the entire place. Pythons are causing huge
numbers of opossums, raccoons, and many more animals. The python has no natural predators
meaning they are wiping out many important animals. According to source 2, "With no natural
predators, these eating machines appear to be wiping out huge numbers of opossums, raccoons, and
bobcats, as well as many bird species." Florida's natural climate is very hot and humid which makes
it harder to get those snakes out of here. According to source 1, "Burmese pythons are carnivores
and survived primarily on small birds and mammals." Another thing that horrible is that the
population keeps growing and growing and it's dangerous for us and animals also the everglades.
Sadly, the everglades is changing rapidly and it's not good. Now that you know about what's
happening to Florida and the everglades. Are you sacred yet?
Meanwhile pythons are not a pet. They are way too dangerous for us. Releasing them anywhere in
the U.S. not only hurts us but animals and it's changing the everglades. This snake is from Southeast
Asia and it's among the largest snake. So now do you think it's changing the everglades. According
to source 1, "Native to the grassy marshes of Southeast Asia, it is among the largest snakes in the
world. Capable of growing to an astounding length of 23 feet and a weight up to 200 pounds." Like I
said in the first part. They are not for pets! They will hurt each and everything in the everglades and
soon only pythons will be there. These animals are and going to keep repopulating and if they don't
put them out as soon as they get them. According to source 1, "When the animal tries to pull away it

Pros And Cons Of Zoo's Involvement In Wildlife Conservation
Animal captivation has been an on–going debate for many years. The idea of taking wildlife from
their homes, in many eyes, is tragic. To others, it is a step in the right direction. It is a step towards,
not only well–developed and in–depth research, butalso a step towards the conservation of
endangered species. As one can tell, these views can be quite disputable, however this paper will
discuss and compare both perspectives as well as dive into more specific aspects of wildlife
captivity. Some of these aspects include the lifespan comparisons, specific roaming necessities per
animal and even changes in animal behavior. Of course, keeping animals in captivity has pros and
cons. Given that researchers are still uncertain of captivity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

This collection of sources includes mostly online articles as well as several news articles and books.
The sources range from the discussions of the lifespan of numerous animals tothe reasoning behind
study observations and research. In "Zoos' Involvement in Wildlife Conservation," Ramsey begins
by explaining the comparison between the beginning of animal captivity to the modern–day
characteristics. He describes the very first zoos as having the focus to gain profit from the public,
rather than the concentration being towards the welfare of the animal. Today, the well–being of
animals is the top priority in many programs across the world. Not only does this article also
describe the challenges that the programs must face, but also the difficult decisions the leaders are
required to make to continue their success in advanced research and conservation. Some of which
include the decision on whether or not to offer predators live prey to exert their natural hunting
instincts. The source concludes by informing the audience that some species could not have survived
without the help and involvement of zoos. Vittania.org emphasizes the effects on animals in
captivity in its' article "21 Pros and Cons of Zoos." This source explains how zoos provide
educational learning, preservation of endangered animals to prevent extinction, humane treatment
towards the animals, readily available veterinary care. In addition, zoos also serve as an economic
resource for the community by providing jobs and increasing tourism statistics. It goes on to explain
the negative impacts such as changes in their natural behaviors. Elephants, for example, need larger
enclosures than a zoo can accommodate. Restricting the animals natural need to migrate results in a
shorter lifespan in captivity and also a more aggressive temperament.Another negative impact

Carnivore Narney Research Paper
As the Narneys inside the crater further evolve they start to grow taller and taller. This goes against
Mercury's gravity but this helps them survive. Being taller means that they can capture more
sunlight.
An example phototropism are the Narneys' leaves. Similar to sunflowers their leaves move with the
sun. Following the sunlight allows them to capture the maximum amount of light energy. An
example of thigmotropism is when pollen touches the Narney. Since pollen is how they reproduce
pollen is vital to their survival. To protect and ensure they receive pollen the reproductive organs of

The first one is the herbivores and the other is the carnivores. The herbivores eat the Narneys inside
the crater while the carnivores eat the Narneys outside the crater. This completely changes how the
two species look, act, and survive. The herbivores of the Narney population become smaller and
quicker while the carnivores start to become bigger and stronger.
The herbivore Narney fear the carnivore Narneys because they are their demise. In order to protect
themselves from the carnivore Narneys they form camouflage. This camouflage makes them blend
into Mercury's environment and keep them hidden. Their outer layer become very rough looking
and tan color to blend in. This makes it very hard for a carnivore Narney to find and eat a herbivore

The Pros And Cons Of Ferrets
My ferrets "dook," do the war dance, and "skitter" between my feet, and make my husband, kids,
and I smile. For my family, ferrets are excellent pets. My husband thinks they're better than dogs,
and the whole lot of us prefer ferrets to cats. Ferrets are very different from cats and dogs,
however.Their behavior, smell, motivations, and shape are all different from cats and dogs. They are
classified as exotic pets, and it is important that you consider the pros and cons of ferret parenthood
before adopting one of these wonderful weasels.
The differences between ferrets and other pets create the pros and cons of having a pet ferret
Intelligence: I hesitate to say that cats and dogs are smarter than ferrets, but I readily acknowledge
that ferrets have a significantly different kind of intelligence. Ferrets are pretty good problem
solvers. As an example, for Christmas one year, I put an apple in a stocking for my ferret. (The ferret
liked to steal apples and hide them. He didn't actually eat them.) The apple was just a tad smaller in
diameter as the stocking. Ernie put his head in the stocking, grabbed the apple, and pulled. It didn't
work. After only two tries he crawled out of the stocking and got on top of it. He pushed the apple

your silverware. This tenacity makes it difficult to "ferret proof" and make your house safe for your

How Chameleons Are Cruel Little Predators
Chameleons are cruel little predators. They hunt bugs, birds, mice and even other chameleons using
only one weapon: their tongues. A recent study explains exactly how these weapons work so
effectively.
To find out, the researchers collected a saliva sample from the most common type of chameleon,
Chamaeleo calyptratus. Next, they rolled a bead on a tilted plate, which had been soaked in the
saliva. That let them measure how much the saliva slowed the bead's descent, therefore allowing
them to calculate the spit's stickiness.
Chameleons' saliva, it turns out, is about 400 times more sticky than human saliva. This allows the
hungry reptile to catch prey up to a third of its body weight and keep hold of the prey even as its
tongue quickly pulls

The Obligate Carnivore

  • 1. The Obligate Carnivore Hunkered down and poised to pounce, fur glistening in the sunlight, the lithe feline watches its prey, a small field mouse, with pupils reminiscent of a black hole. If one were to make a sudden movement, the cat would probably flinch three feet into the air. This single–minded focus is born from what is arguably the most important aspect of feline physiology: their existence as obligate carnivores. The obligate carnivore, unlike omnivorous humans and even domestic canines, is designed by nature to consume a diet composed solely of raw flesh. Felines in their natural habitat hunt small prey that is high in protein with moderate amounts of fat, and minimal to no carbohydrate (CHO) (Zoran 1). Due to this unique physiology, felines do best when ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... They have more energy than ever before, with many people reporting that even their senior cats were running and playing like kittens again. There is less shedding, and the fur is fluffier, silkier, and shinier. Perhaps most enticing to the human carer is the change in the cat's litter box habits. Cat owners feeding commercial diets are well aware of the frequency and quantity of their pet's solid waste. With species–appropriate diets, cats will urinate more, but will often only have a bowel movement once every 2–3 days. This is because the cat is able to utilize a much higher percentage of the food, and it takes longer for enough waste to build up to necessitate a bowel movement. Even then, there will be less than a quarter of the amount seen in kibble fed cats, and there will be almost no detectable odor (Pierson). The well–known stench of typical cat feces is an unfortunate result of the fermentation of CHOs in the intestines (Zoran ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Animal Captivity Dilemma The Dilemma of Animal Captivity Animal captivity is an extremely important, and often overlooked problem that we, as human beings, have placed on nature and the animals that live in the endangered environment. There are groups of people worldwide who are extremely against animal captivity because of the drastic and permanent effects it leaves on the animals. These ideas of hatred against animal captivity are expressed in small ways such as posting a picture on Instagram that represents animal cruelty in captivity. Another way these ideas can be expressed is through large representations such as movies. Films such as Jurassic World and Blackfish are prime examples of this. Both of these films are representing the severe repercussions that can come from keeping large, dangerous animals in captivity. Though Jurassic World is a fictional movie, it is able to send the message that having animals that are dangerous in captivity is something that is very dangerous. Blackfish offers a real and terrifying glimpse into what happens to the mindset of animals who are put into captivity and the threat that those animals pose to not only other animals in captivity but also the humans who are in charge of looking after these animals. This problem of taking animals away from their natural habitat and placing them in captivity is a prime example of how humanity is trying to assert itself as dominant of everything else. Mankind has thought of itself as a "protector" of the wild animals by ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Carnivore Case 1. Suppose you found the bones of an unidentified animal. How could you learn about what the animal ate? What specific structures would give you clues about the creature's diet: The first thing I would look for is specific traits that would narrow down the two million species list. Secondly, what kind of animals live in the area (lets say we are in Canada). Obviously an animal with a spine would be a good indicator that the animal is either a carnivore or a herbivore. But if we really want to know what an animal eats in general we have to look at the animal's teeth. Let's say this animal we find has large flat molars fore specifically grinding up plant matter and cellulose. Then it would be reasonable to assume that the animal we are looking at is a deer. If the jaw of the animal is capable of moving side to side and not just up and down than it is reasonable to assume even without looking at the teeth that this animal is a herbivore. If the animal's jaw can move only up and down, we can safely guess that the animal is mainly a carnivore. Carnivores need strong locked jaws that are incapable of shifting from side to side so when they are holding onto prey their jaws can't be broken. Animal's that have large canine teeth with minimal molars are generally carnivores. This jaw and teeth system isn't set in stone, humans have ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 7. Comparing The Digestive Systems Of A Carnivore Comparing the digestive systems of a Carnivore, a hind gut fermenter and a ruminant In this report, I will be explaining the efficiency of the different digestive systems, the pros and cons of each digestive system, how all the food is broken down and how each digestive system is suitable for the type of animal. All of the digestive systems start with the mouth where the food enters first. The teeth in a carnivore's mouth are designed to eat meat so they have evolved to have sharp and strong teeth, this makes it easy to rip and tear meat from bones of prey. This makes the carnivore more efficient at killing live prey than hindgut fermenters and ruminants. Hindgut fermenters teeth are designed to eat grains and grasses, for example a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... These parts evolved over time to suit the animal's needs. For example, some ruminant's lips are designed to be relatively immobile and use its tongue to grasp a clump of grass and then bite it off. Similarly, a hindgut fermenter uses its tongue to help grasp onto the plant and then uses its teeth and mouth to rip it out of the ground to eat. However, a carnivore's food spends little time in the mouth so its lips and tongue isn't used as much as the ruminants or hind gut fermenters. Before the food goes down the oesophagus, saliva in the animal's mouth is used to help the food break down quicker and it's used to moisten the food so it goes down the oesophagus better. As the animals were evolving, a ruminant's saliva started to produce large amounts of alkaline saliva, which contains a little amylase to help break down starch, this is helpful for the ruminants as it can help break down their food a lot quicker in the mouth, whereas true carnivores do not have any digestive enzymes (amylase) in their saliva as they have a diet consisting of protein which amylase won't break down. So this means the ruminant is more efficient at digesting starch than a carnivore as amylase is found in the saliva on non–ruminant herbivores and, to a lesser extent, carnivores as well. All animals of all digestive systems have an oesophagus. The oesophagus is a tube, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Once native to the swampy marshes of Southeast Asia, these snakes are now migrating over to Florida. Being so large and having no natural predator, they have really made a strong change in our Florida wildlife. These dangerous pythons have altered the population of animals in the Everglades by so much that people are beginning to worry about what will happen next. The snakes didn't get there on their own, but now we don't have any way of stopping them. Burmese Pythons are definitely astonishing creatures. Native to Southeast Asia's version of the Everglades, these pythons are very exotic. These pythons reach sizes of up to 23 feet which makes them one of the largest snakes in the world! "In short order, those little fellows grew to eight feet, 12 feet, 16 feet, 18 plus feet (Paragraph 5)." This explains how they grow rather ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Several pet owners, who some may call "irresponsible," owned some of the Burmese Pythons. Once they got too big, the pet owners released them into the wild were they could now roam free. One warehouse where a hurricane hit, the snakes were all let loose due to destruction of what kept them from escaping. They were supposed to stay in South Africa, which was originally where they came from, but have slowly migrated over to Florida and their population is growing rapidly. These animals are non–native and have been causing lots of damage to our land and animals because they do not belong here. In this quote it explains how a hurricane played a big role in the spread of these pythons. "Many believe that Hurricane Andrew played a role in the spread of the snakes. • 11. Why Do We Need Large Carnivores? Large carnivores tend to possess certain features that make them particularly vulnerable to human disturbance, and consequently, reduced survival. One major characteristic of many species of large carnivores is that they require large home ranges. Populations of individuals or social groups that forage over wide areas are prone to decline as a result of habitat degradation or fragmentation by human activity (Textbook pg. 161). Animal species with large bodies also tend to have low reproductive rates, impeding the ability of their populations to recover following human disruption that reduces the population size (Textbook pg. 161). Furthermore, large carnivores generally need more food to survive than small–bodied animals. These nutritional requirements increase their vulnerability to human disturbance because a reduction in prey populations or habitat size could decrease hunting success and result in starvation (Textbook pg. 161). In addition, top carnivores are also frequently killed by humans for a variety of reasons, including for sport, because they compete with humans for wild game, or because they damage livestock (Textbook pg. 41, 161). Although human activity has caused sizable declines in populations of large carnivores, many of these populations remain extant. One reason this may occur ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... 45). Many recent conservation efforts have aimed at protecting these keystone predators because the loss of these species has the potential to powerfully alter the ecosystems in which they reside (Textbook pg. 47). For example, the gray wolf, a keystone species, has been a focus of conservation in Yellowstone National Park since their extirpation caused population booms in ungulate species and resulted in overgrazing of the vegetation (Textbook pg. ... • 13. Diversity and Abundance of Scavenger Species in Seagrass Beds Diversity and abundance of scavenger species in seagrass beds in comparison to intertidal flat zonations in estuarine environments. Introduction Scavenger species that live in estuarine environments, are organisms that niche in the trophic structure just before detritivores. The energy and nutrients broken down, is then passed back into the ecosystem, where the detritivores further complete the breakdown process of organic matter. They are opportunists when it comes to their diet, scrounging for any organic material to eat, which can place immense pressure on the organism to survive, if essential resources are deficient. Scavengers are herbivoric and carnivorous, allowing them to nourish on any organic matter available to them, whether they be dead or living. (Nielsena & A.Gosselina, 2011). Intertidal (mud) flats are shielded intertidal and shallow sub tidal areas (Quinn, 2014), with significant ecosystems that provide a diversity of highly productive, environmental habitats that are essential sources of food for fish during times of high tide, and for birds in low tide. The sediment composition of intertidal flats depends on the "interactions between the physical, chemical and biological processes" (Widdows, et al., 2004), but the sediment if mainly fine particles and mostly muds. The sediment itself can also either have vegetation growth or be a completely bare flat region. (Quinn, 2014). Seagrass are an angiosperm plant species, which grow in a grass –like pattern ... • 17. Carnivore: Determining In Yellowstone National Park The Holocene is long gone and the Anthropocene, an epoch marked by human progress and environmental decay, has begun. Pronounced human activity has led to rising carbon dioxide, nitrogen, and methane concentrations that disproportionately affect terrestrial and marine life (Kolbert 108). We have outcompeted marine predators with our fisheries and led many to extinction with our fertilization practices. Horrified, the Conservation Movement has attempted to influence the way Americans act towards nature, but its mission; to "preserve and protect America's wildlife" remains an idea that the average citizen is a stranger to. In view of a possible "Sixth Extinction," it is imperative that biodiversity is preserved by incorporating rewilding techniques ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of the best examples of these ecological benefits can be seen in Yellowstone National Park. Wild wolves inhabited Yellowstone at the beginning of the nineteenth century, when the concept of what could be called "natural" excluded carnivores. Overhunting, greatly supported by the government, eliminated wolves from Yellowstone National Park. As predicted by the mere concept of rewilding, things didn't go well in Yellowstone. After the wolves were gone, elks began overgrazing, causing the erosion of the soil (Ripple & Beschta 7). They slowed the growth of willow, cottonwood, berry–producing shrubs, and aspen, which in turn, led to beaver emigration and bear population to decline (Soule & Noss 6). Once gray wolves were reintroduced into Yellowstone in 1995 (Ripple & Beschta 1), the opposite was observed. Wolves reduced elk population and restrained their area of grazing, leading to increasing numbers of cottonwood, aspen, and willow ( institute of research undergrad). Moreover, beavers, which "create more ponds, which provide habitat for streamside trees, which creates more habitats for nesting birds, and so on" (undergraduate research) returned. To this day cougars are still returning to Yellowstone and bird, as well as bear populations have dramatically increased. This example demonstrates how the mere reintroduction of a ... It has become one of the most endangered mammals in the world, with only 1,600 of them left" (Exploring nature education). Also According to another credible website about polar bears, "Polar bears might not be endangered but they are one category off of becoming endangered, there are 20,000–25,000 left worldwide" (animalpawnation). As you can see the Giant panda is classified as endangered. There are only about 1,600 left in the world. 1,600 may be a lot but surprisingly not to many scientists and researchers. Burrell American Military University Abstract This paper will examine the lifestyle of the coyote developed from several published articles from online (Internet) and personal observations. Coyotes are often misunderstood regarding their habitat, reproduction, and evolution. This paper reviews the coyote's lifestyle and effects on their habitat in the wild and urban. Coyotes are becoming braver and less dependent upon wildlife habitat based on development of the land into rural settings. As the coyote's habitat changes, so does their lifecycle and diet. Resource partitioning occurs amongst animals that share the same resources, such as food and space (Shoener 1974), and allows for their coexistence (May 1973). The different utilization of spatial, temporal, and trophic niches between sympatric species allows for their partitioning of resources (Jácomo et al. 2004). Difference in body mass is one of the factors that contribute to the coexistence of species in that different sized animals will generally eat different sized food items, therefore utilizing different resources and reducing competition (Wilson 1975; Jácomo et al. 2004). In the case of predatory carnivores, as predator body mass increases, the size of their prey increases (Gittleman 1985; Vézina 1985). Differences in body ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The diets of the remaining mesocarnivores are relatively similar in that they all primarily prey on small to medium sized lagomorphs and rodents, with fishers having an affinity for porcupines. The remainder of the mesocarnivore diet consists of reptiles, birds, carrion, and with the exception of bobcats, fruit and insects (Cavallini et al. 2009). In this study, the diets of these carnivores in Keweenaw County will be analyzed to determine prey partitioning through scat analyses and the use of scent stations. Specifically, the hypotheses tested will be that black bears will consume primarily plant material, gray wolves will feed primarily on large ungulates, and amongst the mesocarnivores, predator body mass will correlate with prey size. In particular, the larger coyotes and bobcats will feed primarily on medium–sized mammalian prey, such as snowshoe hares and cottontail rabbits, and the smaller red foxes, fishers, and American martens will feed primarily on smaller prey, such as voles, mice, and squirrels, along with porcupines in the fisher diet. Obligate carnivores are distinct from other predators because they absolutely must consume meat. For them, meat isn't just a part of a varied diet. It's a biological necessity. From lions to ocelots to domestic shorthairs, all cats are obligate carnivores. Other animals classified as obligate carnivores are dolphins, sea lions, ferrets, and mink. Because of their ancestral raw meat diets provided them, cats cannot produce certain meat–sourced amino acids and vitamins. There is also going to be effects on non–targeted animals if the translocation is not carefully planned out. It might cause a secondary problem if problematic carnivores are translocated into an area where other endangered animals inhabit, and the carnivores are likely to prey on them. In addition, the strategy does not offer an immediate effect so that it has to be combined with other methods and cannot work solo (Distefano). Carnivore Evolution Millions of years ago a dinosaur group, theropods, consisted of killing–machines like the T–Rex and the velociraptor, but recent research has proven that these bloodthirsty carnivores evolved into birds, trading their sharp teeth for beaks. This mind–blowing realization has confused many people for years, but Amy Balanoff reported her findings to show proof of the line of evolutionary descent from horrendous beast to feathery pet. By conducting both comparative and statistical evidence on thousands of vertebrates, the team hoped to find some understanding as to the characteristics of animals that develop beaks. Their results showed that beaked animals are more likely to be hatched from eggs the embryos had a structure on the tip of their snouts made of keratin, something found in fingernails; using this they could break through the egg and then shortly after it would fall off. Josef Stiegler connected their findings to the fossil records and stated that the transitions they saw in the jaw may have been the start of this evolution from killer reptile to bird. Obviously as this evolution progressed, the theropods would transition earlier and earlier until it happened in the embryo stage. The team also hypothesized that a protein called BMP4 may have stopped teeth from growing and start creating beaks, but Stiegler disagreed with this because he felt like additional research needed to be conducted. Scientist Stephen Brusatte read the analysis and thought the study is a great example of how fossil genetics can be used to show the comparisons between modern birds today and terrible dinosaurs. In my opinion, I don't find the study that far–fetched. I believe that this could be a possibility to how we have birds today. The polar bear may look like any other bear, but they are unique in their own way, such as their characteristics and behavior . The polar bear, has unique characteristics that make it stand out the most compared to the other bears in its taxonomic group. The taxonomic group that the polar bear falls under is the Ursidae Group ( Tanya Dewey and Phil Myers). Breaking it down even further it goes down to genus, the genus of the polar bear is Ursus and it is derived from the latin word ursus, meaning bear. While many of these mammals were preyed upon by the carnivores, some were simply too large to be killed by single predators, causing them to be relatively immune to predation (Rodriguez, Alberdi, Azanza, Prado, 2006). (Rodriguez, Alberdi, Azanza, Prado, 2006) The herbivores of course needed grasses and trees to feed on though, which became difficult as glaciation occurred cyclically causing for many to die from lack of livable environments. As the herbivore mammals died off, so did the predators that relied on them as a food source. While many of the herbivores became extinct during this time, others survived in certain places better than others. Native horses of North America for example existed before the end of the Pleistocene but disappear from the fossil record in that area. Horses as well as many other mammals in a similar situation still exist around the globe but were wiped out from their original habitats. In addition to carnivore and herbivore mammals, there were also many different species of birds and reptiles that existed. A common misconception is that dinosaurs lived during this time, but they had gone extinct some 60 million years before the Pleistocene began. Some species of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 63. An Alien On Earth And Hunted Humans Question One: If an alien race landed on Earth and hunted humans, we would need many different protection methods. The five methods I think would benefit humans the most in an alien invasion would be: venom, speed, webbed feet, strong claws, and strong jaws. Venom would be very important for my protection because I would rather kill the aliens, instead of avoiding them. In order to inject venom into the aliens, humans would need to have sharper teeth. I would sneak up on an alien and bite them. This could immobilize the alien once the venom affects them. Two animals that utilize venom are spiders and snakes. Speed would be another important protection method because if a group of aliens were chasing you, they would not be able to keep up with your incredible speed. If you were traveling in a large group, you could all go separate directions and confuse the aliens. They would not be able to keep track of everyone or even be able to catch up to any human. This would also include the speed of climbing things, such as trees and mountains. Two animals that utilize this method of protection are the cobra and the rattlesnake. Webbed feet would also be an important protection method for humans if they were being hunted by aliens. Webbed feet are helpful for swimming and would allow humans to swim quickly away from the predators. Webbed feet would make our feet look a lot different than they do now. We would walk differently with webbed feet, but would swim very fast. I am a slow ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Scolopocryptops Sexspinosus Essay Does this species of centipede, Scolopocryptops sexspinous, extract water primarily from prey items or do they get their water intake from a source of groundwater? We hypothesis that Scolopocryptops sexspinosus absorbs much of its water content through direct contact with a source of ground or rain water, therefore there will be similarities between the delta values of O18 and H2 (Deuterium) of the centipede and the nearby body of water (creek). Methods On October 31, a Bark Centipede (Scolopocryptops sexspinosus), two prey items (Oniscus asellus and Lumbricus terrestris) along with three samples of water from nearby Hess Creek were collected, all were collected within a 100m2 area and within. Each organisms liquid was extracted. All liquid content was placed in a pipette(10µL). The pipettes were labeled and distilled. . The water content was then placed in for isotopic analysis. • 67. Burmese Pythons Effects On The Everglades And The Ecosystem Burmese Pythons Do you think pythons are scary? Well if you aren't then you will be as soon as you finish this book. The Burmese pythons is a very long and wide animal. Yes, people has them as pets. But that dangerous to keep them. Those snakes size up and can possibly eat you. Just think what kind of effect it has on the everglades and the ecosystem. Although, the Everglades is a very special and cool place. But there are way too many pythons there and we need a way to get them out, because it's hurting the entire place. Pythons are causing huge numbers of opossums, raccoons, and many more animals. The python has no natural predators meaning they are wiping out many important animals. According to source 2, "With no natural predators, these eating machines appear to be wiping out huge numbers of opossums, raccoons, and bobcats, as well as many bird species." Florida's natural climate is very hot and humid which makes it harder to get those snakes out of here. According to source 1, "Burmese pythons are carnivores and survived primarily on small birds and mammals." Another thing that horrible is that the population keeps growing and growing and it's dangerous for us and animals also the everglades. Sadly, the everglades is changing rapidly and it's not good. Now that you know about what's happening to Florida and the everglades. Are you sacred yet? Meanwhile pythons are not a pet. They are way too dangerous for us. Releasing them anywhere in the U.S. not only hurts us but animals and it's changing the everglades. This snake is from Southeast Asia and it's among the largest snake. So now do you think it's changing the everglades. According to source 1, "Native to the grassy marshes of Southeast Asia, it is among the largest snakes in the world. Capable of growing to an astounding length of 23 feet and a weight up to 200 pounds." Like I said in the first part. They are not for pets! They will hurt each and everything in the everglades and soon only pythons will be there. These animals are and going to keep repopulating and if they don't put them out as soon as they get them. According to source 1, "When the animal tries to pull away it only sink in further into the python's grip. Then the python's coil's ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. Pros And Cons Of Zoo's Involvement In Wildlife Conservation Animal captivation has been an on–going debate for many years. The idea of taking wildlife from their homes, in many eyes, is tragic. To others, it is a step in the right direction. It is a step towards, not only well–developed and in–depth research, butalso a step towards the conservation of endangered species. As one can tell, these views can be quite disputable, however this paper will discuss and compare both perspectives as well as dive into more specific aspects of wildlife captivity. Some of these aspects include the lifespan comparisons, specific roaming necessities per animal and even changes in animal behavior. Of course, keeping animals in captivity has pros and cons. Given that researchers are still uncertain of captivity ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This collection of sources includes mostly online articles as well as several news articles and books. The sources range from the discussions of the lifespan of numerous animals tothe reasoning behind study observations and research. In "Zoos' Involvement in Wildlife Conservation," Ramsey begins by explaining the comparison between the beginning of animal captivity to the modern–day characteristics. He describes the very first zoos as having the focus to gain profit from the public, rather than the concentration being towards the welfare of the animal. Today, the well–being of animals is the top priority in many programs across the world. Not only does this article also describe the challenges that the programs must face, but also the difficult decisions the leaders are required to make to continue their success in advanced research and conservation. Some of which include the decision on whether or not to offer predators live prey to exert their natural hunting instincts. The source concludes by informing the audience that some species could not have survived without the help and involvement of zoos. Vittania.org emphasizes the effects on animals in captivity in its' article "21 Pros and Cons of Zoos." This source explains how zoos provide educational learning, preservation of endangered animals to prevent extinction, humane treatment towards the animals, readily available veterinary care. In addition, zoos also serve as an economic resource for the community by providing jobs and increasing tourism statistics. It goes on to explain the negative impacts such as changes in their natural behaviors. Elephants, for example, need larger enclosures than a zoo can accommodate. Restricting the animals natural need to migrate results in a shorter lifespan in captivity and also a more aggressive temperament.Another negative impact ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 71. Pandas Carnivores The next topic I'll talk about is the Relatives Pandas live with. Pandas live in a family called the Urisadue. (Alexandria, 2017) Pandas are solitary animals until mating season. Pandas create a family, which are separated meaning they don't live together. Pandas always have freedom to be alone. Male Pandas have a smelling ability to find if a female panda is ready to mate. (Bradford, 2017) Since Pandas don't live together, then what is their anatomy? Had you guys ever thought about if Pandas were carnivores or omnivores? Well Panda's Anatomy is really interesting to learn about. Pandas are mammals and omnivores. This creature is warm blooded and they also make their own babies during mating season. Pandas are omnivores who eats plants ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 73. Carnivore Narney Research Paper As the Narneys inside the crater further evolve they start to grow taller and taller. This goes against Mercury's gravity but this helps them survive. Being taller means that they can capture more sunlight. An example phototropism are the Narneys' leaves. Similar to sunflowers their leaves move with the sun. Following the sunlight allows them to capture the maximum amount of light energy. An example of thigmotropism is when pollen touches the Narney. Since pollen is how they reproduce pollen is vital to their survival. To protect and ensure they receive pollen the reproductive organs of a Narney closes around pollen. After sensing the pollen it will quickly close around it. After one year the plant like Narneys reach a punctuated equilibrium. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The first one is the herbivores and the other is the carnivores. The herbivores eat the Narneys inside the crater while the carnivores eat the Narneys outside the crater. This completely changes how the two species look, act, and survive. The herbivores of the Narney population become smaller and quicker while the carnivores start to become bigger and stronger. The herbivore Narney fear the carnivore Narneys because they are their demise. In order to protect themselves from the carnivore Narneys they form camouflage. This camouflage makes them blend into Mercury's environment and keep them hidden. Their outer layer become very rough looking and tan color to blend in. This makes it very hard for a carnivore Narney to find and eat a herbivore Narney. The herbivore Narneys also use mimicry to protect themselves from the carnivore Narney. The herbivore Narneys will mimic the plant like Narneys inside the crater. Since the carnivore Narneys don't eat the plantlike Narneys they stay away from them. The herbivore Narney mimics the plant like Narney by not moving and staying close to the plant like Narney which is very similar to the plant like ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 75. The Pros And Cons Of Ferrets My ferrets "dook," do the war dance, and "skitter" between my feet, and make my husband, kids, and I smile. For my family, ferrets are excellent pets. My husband thinks they're better than dogs, and the whole lot of us prefer ferrets to cats. Ferrets are very different from cats and dogs, however.Their behavior, smell, motivations, and shape are all different from cats and dogs. They are classified as exotic pets, and it is important that you consider the pros and cons of ferret parenthood before adopting one of these wonderful weasels. The differences between ferrets and other pets create the pros and cons of having a pet ferret Intelligence: I hesitate to say that cats and dogs are smarter than ferrets, but I readily acknowledge that ferrets have a significantly different kind of intelligence. Ferrets are pretty good problem solvers. As an example, for Christmas one year, I put an apple in a stocking for my ferret. (The ferret liked to steal apples and hide them. He didn't actually eat them.) The apple was just a tad smaller in diameter as the stocking. Ernie put his head in the stocking, grabbed the apple, and pulled. It didn't work. After only two tries he crawled out of the stocking and got on top of it. He pushed the apple out. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Ferrets are intensely curious. They must know what is behind closed doors. They must know what is behind a barrier. They need to study the backside of a dishwasher and the inside of a sofa. This tenacity makes it difficult to "ferret proof" and make your house safe for your beloved ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 77. How Chameleons Are Cruel Little Predators Chameleons are cruel little predators. They hunt bugs, birds, mice and even other chameleons using only one weapon: their tongues. A recent study explains exactly how these weapons work so effectively. To find out, the researchers collected a saliva sample from the most common type of chameleon, Chamaeleo calyptratus. Next, they rolled a bead on a tilted plate, which had been soaked in the saliva. That let them measure how much the saliva slowed the bead's descent, therefore allowing them to calculate the spit's stickiness. Chameleons' saliva, it turns out, is about 400 times more sticky than human saliva. This allows the hungry reptile to catch prey up to a third of its body weight and keep hold of the prey even as its tongue quickly pulls ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
