San Francisco Short Story
It began with the listless feeling brought on by a Sunday afternoon. A deep, gnawing feeling of
being unsettled seated itself within his gut and bit at him incessantly that afternoon, when the
bleached seas of fog finally began rolling back and exposing the ghostly monoliths of steel and
glass, complimented by the vaguely red bridge on the edge of the city that stretched into the thicket
of mist like a pathway to eternal salvation. San Francisco had always been a haunted city; a city of
tragic fires, earthquakes, and a feverish lust for gold, spurred on by the constant hum that seemed to
make up the very fabric of the land. It was a city of hope and courage, a beacon of civilization and
modernity casting it's brilliance into the bay. But

The Explorations Of Francisco Pizarro: Spanish Conqueror
The Explorations of Francisco Pizarro
Francisco Pizarro, a man who went from a poor child to a Spanish Conqueror. He explored for more
than 10 years! Pizarro was born in 1471 in Trujillo Spain. He did not attend school, but he did work
on a pig farm. His father was a colonel in the Spanish Army, and was most likely raised by his side.
Francisco grew tired of how poor his life was. He had a desire to have adventures and collect
wealth, so he joined the Spanish Army. As a soldier, he had a lot of skills and was very effective in
combat. He was still not not satisfied.
After joining the Spanish Army, he didn't think that his actions were getting rewarded properly.
Francisco Pizarro left for Hispaniola so that he could get noticed for his military skills. "He came to
America in 1510 and took part in a number of exploratory expeditions. Including that of Vasco de
Balboa, which resulted in Spain's claim to the Pacific Ocean in 1513." (EbscoHost) During the time,
Francisco Pizarro was Vasco de Balboa's chief lieutenant. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

What is it like to go to San Francisco
As I egress out of the San Francisco International airport I find myself in an entirely contradictory
environment from which I had recently departed. This difference becomes apparent when I leave the
regulated atmosphere of the terminal, when I am confronted with the smell of the ocean and the
remarkable difference in temperature. I quickly shuck my coat and sweat shirt, revealing my t–shirt
underneath. I smell the ocean and feel a swift breeze. My experience has just begun. San Francisco,
with all of its oddities and scenic views was the topic of my paper.
San Francisco founded in 1848 after the Mexican–American War, The city soon expanded
exponentially after gold was discovered in california around that time. The community on the bay
has overcome some major setbacks and restrictions. One event was a series of outbreaks that sent
people to quarantine on Angel Island. The most major setback was the earthquake and subsequent
fire of 1906. After this event, much of the city was destroyed and many people were displaced. In a
defining moment, the city decided to rebuild and had built a grand complex for the world's fair in
1915. The only remnant of which, a dome and surrounding buildings housed an art museum.

However, one quality they all shared was the horrible traffic, it is so bad that it drove the Bay Area
to build a below ground shuttle system near an active fault line. The subway is the most efficient
way to go around the town. This efficiency it shares with Washington D.C. with similar traffic
congestion. However, in comparison Washington's Metro is more grand than that of the BART.
D.C.'s system has a similar design pattern throughout and has a more expensive feel, the BART's

Francisco Pizarro's Famous Expeditions
Francisco Pizarro is best known for his famous expeditions to the "New World" , his conquering of
the Incas, and his help at discovering the great, big, blue of what we know as the Pacific
Ocean. Pizarro living in the Renaissance era , was fond of the idea to further his knowledge by
setting out on explorations. Not being able to read or write however was not going to ruin Pizarro's
dream,
Pizarro's inner ambition would carry him where he had always wanted to go.
Francisco Pizarro Gonzales , or better known as just simply Francisco Pizarro was born in
1476 in Trujillo, Spain. Pizarro was born to the poor farmer, Captain Gonzalo Pizarro, and Francisca
Gonzales. Francisco was illiterate and thus forced to herd his father's pigs. Throughout Pizarro's
child and young manhood , Francisco heard multiple stories and tales of a new world. Through these
stories
Pizarro developed a want and longing for both adventure and fortune. At the age of 34 in 1510,
Pizarro went on his first, real expedition to Uraba, Colombia with Spanish explorer Alonzo de Ojed.
Even if their trip to Colombia was considered unsuccessful, Pizarro was delighted with the
experience and had proven that he could make the cut. He proved that he was reliable and wasn't
going to just back out or quit. Just 3 years later, in 1513 Pizarro joined Vasco Nunez de Balboa on
his voyage to the "South
Sea." On their way they had to cross the Isthmus of Panama, they then laid their eyes on what we
modernly call the Pacific

Francisco Pizarro was a conquistador born in Trujillo, Spain in about 1471. His father, Gonzalo

Pizarro never learned to read and write but he was full of adventure.
Pizarro sailed to the new world on November 10, 1509. He was part of many expeditions in the new
world including one with Balboa. Pizarro fought against many hostile tribes in Panama and when
news of Hernando Cortez' success in Mexico reached Pizarro, he set off to South America in hope of

When Pizarro got back, he and his brothers discovered a group of people called the Incas. They saw
that the Incas had a lot of gold and greed took them over. They tricked the Incan leader and captured
him. The ransom to release the Incan emperor, Atahualpa, was to fill a room measuring 22 by 17
feet with gold. The Incas did fill the room but Pizarro killed the emperor anyway and conquered the
Incas. When news of Pizarro's conquest reached King Charles' ears, he was overjoyed. He expanded
the territory which Pizarro governed. A lot of South America was under Spanish rule. After all of the
gold was divided between all of the leaders of the expedition and the king, each man got about
$52,000 in Spanish pesos. That was a lot of money back then.
Almagro was jealous of Pizarro's fame and tried to take over Cuzco from Pizarro. Cuzco was the
capital of the Incas. Pizarro's brothers captured and executed Almagro and some of Almagro's
followers were still angry. They went ahead and assassinated Pizarro in the city that he founded,
Lima. Francisco Pizarro died in 1541.
Francisco Pizarro's legacy can still be felt today especially in South America. He introduced Spanish
to the native people which later became the official language of many countries in South America

Francisco de Goya y Lucientes was conceived on March 30, 1746, in Fuendetodos, a town in
northern Spain. The child of a guilder, Goya spent the vast majority of his childhood in Saragossa.
There he started considering painting around the age of fourteen. He was an understudy of José
Luzán Martínez. At to begin with, Goya learned by impersonation. He duplicated the works of
incredible experts, discovering motivation in progress of such craftsmen as Diego Rodríguez de
Silva y Velázquez and Rembrandt van Rijn.
Later, Goya moved to Madrid, where he went to work with siblings Francisco and Ramón Bayeu y

At some time between late 1792 and early 1793, a serious illness, whose exact nature is not known,
left Goya deaf, and he became withdrawn. During his recuperation, he undertook a series of
experimental paintings. His experimental art–that would encompass paintings, drawings as well as a
bitter series of aquatinted etchings, published in 1799 under the title Caprichos. French forces
invaded Spain in 1808, leading to the Peninsular. Goya's involvement with the court of Joseph I, the
brother of Napoleon Bonaparte, is not known: he did paint works for French patrons, but upon the
restoration of the Spanish king, Ferdinand VII, in 1814, Goya denied any involvement with the
intruder. In 1819, with the idea of isolating himself, he bought a country house by the Manzanares
river just outside of Madrid. It was known as the Quinta del titled after the previous owner and not
after Goya himself. There he created the Black Paintings with intense, haunting themes, reflective of
the artist's fear of insanity, and his outlook on humanity. Several of these, including Saturn
Devouring His Son, were painted directly onto the walls of his dining and sitting rooms. Goya left
Spain in May 1824 for Bordeaux, where he settled, and Paris. He returned to Spain in 1826, but

Francisco Goya The Third Of May Essay
For my writing assignment, I chose to discuss "The Third of May," by Francisco Goya. On May 2,
1808, hundreds of Goya's countrymen rebelled against the French. On May 3, these Spanish
freedom fighters were rounded up and put to death by the French. Francisco Goya was in a tough
position because he had supported the French Revolution, but the slaughter of his countrymen and
the horrors of war made him change his tune and had a profound effect on the artist. This painting is
acclaimed as one the great paintings of all time and has even been called the world's first modern
painting. The work of art itself is in the early hours of the morning taking after the uprising and
spotlights on two gatherings of men: a firing squad, and a scattered gathering or hostages held at
gunpoint. There is a row of French soldiers aiming for a Spanish man, who puts his arms up in
accommodation both to the officers and to his sure demise. There is a slope/hill behind him that
represents an executioner's wall. There is a heap of grisly dead bodies that lie at his feet, painting the
territory with their gushing blood. On his other side, you can see a line of his fellow countryman that
can be seen extending out of the scene. You can see that they cover their eyes to abstain from
watching the butcher of their kindred Spaniard, and they realize that death is ... Show more content

Goya's painting presents us with an anti–hero, pervaded with genuine emotion that had not seen
since, the ancient Roman sculpture of The Dying Gaul. Goya's main figure is not dying heroically in
battle but rather slaughtered on the side of a road like an animal. Both the scene and the dress of the
men are non–descriptive, making the artistic creation an immortal bit of workmanship. This is
unquestionably why this piece of work remains emotionally charged

San Francisco 1915 – Palace of Fine Arts The Palace of Fine Arts was one of the finest buildings
constructed for the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. It was one of the
most important symbols of the fair, situated near its center, at the end of the axis on which were
located the Courts of the Four Seasons and of the Universe at the center, and the Court of

The center of the arch was placed behind the rotunda, so that the two were not aligned in concentric
rings. This allowed a wider arch to be built in the same space, giving it a grander appearance. The
pergola can be more closely seen in the next image, reprinted from the same source and measuring 4
by 6 inches, as well as in the third and fourth images, which are photographs from Souvenir Views
of the Panama Pacific International Exposition San Francisco California 1915 (7 in. x 11 in.) There
were ochre columns, topped by boxes, mixed with pale green ones. The boxes were originally meant
to house small trees and hanging vines, but these were not planted for budgetary reasons. At each
corner of the boxes stood statues of women looking inwards, sculpted by Ulric Ellerhusen. They
were meant to represent the melancholy of life without art. The colonnades stood along the side of
the lagoon, as can be seen in the second image, with the reflection of the tranquil water adding a
pleasant element. Along the side of the walkway in the pergola was a garden of small trees and
shrubbery. Plants were present everywhere in the Palace, along the pergola and the rotunda, befitting
the theme of a decaying ruin, overrun by nature. According to Maybeck, "it is the water and the
trees" that people came to see (Macomber, 23). The natural scenery was integral to his design. The

made many interesting voyages. They both faced separate challenges and difficulties along the way.
During their difficulties Cortes and Pizarro acquired allies to help them on their expeditions. Cortez
and Pizarro were both very fierce and conquered many areas.
Hernan Cortes was a fierce conquistador from Spain that grew up in a noble family. In 1504, he
headed out for Hispaniola but ended up in Cuba in 1511. Cortes convinced the Cuban governor to
let him be the leader and general of an expedition to Mexico. He then established Veracruz, and was

They all learned from each other and grew to be a very powerful force and advanced Cortes's

was the capital of what we know today as Mexico. Tenochtitlan was one of the largest cities in the
world at that time. Tenochtitlan was run by the Aztecs. Cortes then met Montezuma, the Aztecs's
emperor. Montezuma and the Aztecs thought Hernan Cortes was a god. They thought he was
Quetzalcoatl. Cortez was there at the right time because the god was supposed to arrive the same
year Cortes was there. Since they thought he was a god they would do anything for his command.
Later on Montezuma suspected Cortez not to be the god. He gave him gold and jewels to try and get
him to leave. It had the opposite affect and increased the Spaniards greed. Cortez then captured
Montezuma as hostage to prevent the Aztecs attacking.
Cortez temporarily left the city leaving Pedro De Alvarado in charge. Pedro ended up murdering
several priests and religious leaders which caused the Aztecs to revolt. Cortez then arrived back in
the middle of the revolt. He had Montezuma talk to them and made them calm down, but the Aztecs
still considered him a traitor. Montezuma was killed by the protesters throwing stones.
Now Cortez was in Tenochtitlan and conquering Mexico, the Cuban governor sent a force to kill
Cortez and take over what he accomplished. Cortez took the Cuban commander hostage and

Francisco base on my personal experience because there are many historic things I can illustrate.
Before I started traveling this field trip, I did some researches carefully in San Francisco city guide,
so I eager to travel as soon as possible. Finally I attended a free tour with San Francisco city guide,
also they assigned a tour guide, Marann.
There was a Mid–Autumn parade in Chinatown on that day, accompanying the dragon and lion
dancing, Marann started to give us illustration about Chinatown. Because It is hard to get a parking
lot in Chinatown, and the people who live in Chinatown celebrated Mid–Autumn Day, so I decided
to take BART to go there. Before I met our tour guide, I went across to Union Square and passed a
tunnel. The one side of the tunnel is to connect the western world, like Union Square, and the
another side of the tunnel is to connect to the orient world, Chinatown. Finally I walked to inside
Portsmouth Square Park, park level, and then I saw our tour guide, Manuel Maranan who took us to
Chinatown. That's a very big park, and it's close to Hilton hotel, there was a China's nation flag, also
there was a Taiwan's flag. Many Chinese visitors

Mark Twain's The San Francisco Earthquake
San Francisco is a historic city on the coast of California. It is known throughout history for
experiencing many earthquakes, as it sits next to the San Andreas fault which runs up and down the
state. The city becomes the setting for Mark Twain's narrative essay, The San Francisco Earthquake
which recounts the events of an earthquake known as the "great" earthquake. In the ensuing disaster,
Twain does not direct his focus on the destruction of the city as much as he does on the people's
reactions. Through his writing, Twain wants to show that when faced with terror, people will resort
to mindless and silly behavior.
Twain begins his essay by saying, "I enjoyed my first earthquake." A sarcastic tone is created
through this statement, as normally one would not find joy in experiencing an earthquake.
Throughout the essay, Twain describes the actions of the people with similar sarcasm and
exaggeration. When he describes a woman carrying a child who was running "...down the street
holding it by the ankles as if it were a dressed turkey," this imagery of the child is funny, but it also
implies that the women is in such a state of panic that she is not thinking clearly and does not notice
the way she is holding her child. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He describes the ground "rolling ...in waves" and the "heavy grinding noise" of brick houses rubbing

actions of the buildings. These descriptions and words give the buildings human characteristics, that

Francisco Goya May 3 1808
Francisco Goya's The Executions of May 3, 1808, is a remarkably interesting piece of art. This piece
represents a protest against the Napoleon Occupational Army in Madrid. There are various visual
elements and design principles in the art, which will be covered. The beginning of this ILO will
contain the visual elements first, followed by the design principles, and what they mean in the
artwork. In Goya's art, we can see the primary, visual element of lines. Lines represent motion,
dynamics, and direction. The soldiers are aiming their rifles at a group of prisoners waiting for
execution. Horizontal lines indicate a peaceful scene, however, in this case, it would be appropriate
to say they mean a sense of destruction or death, as the title of the art depicts. As the view follows
the direction of the lines, the viewer is immediately drawn to the man with the bright white shirt.
The values of the piece are relatively dark and morbid, however, when we look at the man with the
white shirt, we can see the opposite effect of the bright white shirt. Going back to the element of
lines, once the viewer looks at the man with the white shirt, you can see his hands are in a diagonal
position. These diagonal lines represent dynamics and tension. The pressure comes from the
imminent execution of that man.
When we talk ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
We must also deduce whether the balance is symmetrical or asymmetrical. If one splits the painting
in half, one can see it is not completely balanced. You have more "weight" on the right–hand side
than you do on the left. However, regarding art, it is balanced. Even though there are more objects
on the right, the values of the bright white shirt give it a sense of equal distribution. This uneven, yet
balanced proportion of the art tells the viewer that it is asymmetrical. It is asymmetrical because it is
unequally distributed, yet it is still

Francisco Pizarro: The Conquer of the Incas
Francisco Pizarro was not just any explorer, he was the conquer of the wealthy Inca civilization. To
get to that part of his life we need to start at the beginning of his, it starts in the Fifteenth century
also happens to be in the Age of Exploration. People saw the Age as opportunity for lots of things,
but mainly to be famous, to rich and to gain more knowledge (History Alive! 376). People were also
curious about the new world, and they wanted more individuals to convert to Christianity (Burstein
and Shek 446). This helped lead Francisco Pizarro to be the explorer he was going to become.
Francisco Pizarro has no record of his birth, but he is believed to be born in 1471 in Trujillo, Spain.

The Influence Of Francisco Franco On Spain
Spain Spain is a country located in the Iberian Peninsula of South West Europe. During the early
1900's Spain had a democratic government, but like most, there were always people who did not
support their system. In Spain's case it was a man named Francisco Franco. He has left a tremendous
mark within Spain's and the U.S' history. He had gone into dictatorship during his rule, told people
of his very own country that they could not express their culture, and he has affected the world in
more way than most know. Francisco Franco had always criticized and judged the way Spain had

One being that he had inspired one of the most famous paintings by one of the most famous
painters. Picasso had painted "Guernica" during the time of Franco's rule. More importantly during
the time of the Spanish Civil War. It had showed the tragedies and the suffering the war had put
many through (Pablopicasso.org Staff, 2009). That painting in particular has inspired so many
artists. Franco was responsible for that seeing as he was the one who caused the Spanish Civil War.
Hitler had reached out and asked if he could test out new weapons on Spain's soil. Franco had made
an agreement with Hitler and agreed to him testing new weapons out. That had started the Spanish
Civil War because Hitler didn't care where or who he tested his weapons on. Many people had
suffered because of that. One of the most important reasons people should know about Franco was
that because he had agreed to Hitler testing the weapons out, that gave him a big opening. The
Spanish Civil War was a pre–war that gave Hitler the opportunity to test out weapons that they
would use for World War II. That was one of the most significant mistakes that Franco made during

The Works Of Francisco De Goya
Francisco de Goya was born in 1746 in the village of Fuendetodos in Aragon. He started studying
painting before the age of 14. Goya lived in Spain during the French occupation in 1808 that led to
the Peninsular War of 1808–1814;therefore, the war changed Goya's paints pallet from bright colors
to dark colors. Goya painted the struggle the Spanish people went through. For instance, he painted
The Third of May and The Disaster of The War series. Goya also suffered from a severe and
undiagnosed illness in ,1793, which left him completely deaf. This was another reason leading to his
darker paintings. Also Josefa's death affected Goya's painting, while he was mentally and

Goya's painted a man who is about to be shot, men who have just been shot, and line of men who
are about to be shot. Goya makes us see the Spanish people's faces, and their emotions, to make us
have empathy. In the other hand, the solders lined up with their backs toward us leave us with no
feeling for them. Saturn Devouring His Son is another painting by Goya. It was painted from 1819
to 1823. According to the traditional interpretation, it depicts the Greek myth of the Titan Cronus .
Saturn Devouring His Son is one of Goya's darkest paintings. It was painted directly onto the wall of
his house. The painting is about Saturn, the God of time, who was told that one of his sons will
dethrone him. In order to prevent that Saturn devoured his children as they were born, but Jupiter
escaped so Saturn in the end was dethroned and couldn't escape. This terrifying story is depicted in a
horrific way in this painting. We can see the horror in Saturn's eyes as he pulls his son's arm into his
mouth. He is trying to seek revenge, and tells us that no one can take away what he has. Also
Saturn's facial expression gives us the feeling that Saturn knows that he is not doing the right thing,
so he tries to do it as quickly as possible, he is trying not to listen to his heart, but to listen to his

History Of The Chinatown Of San Francisco
As everyone knows, Chinese people are all around the world, and they do not like living with local
people, so there is a place for them to do everything, such as work, live, and entertainment, its name
is Chinatown. There are many Chinatown in this world; Chinatown may be located in London, UK,
Chinatown may be located in Australia, also Chinatown may be located in New York. Whereas,
today I want to write about the Chinatown of San Francisco, because there are many historic things I
can illustrate. The Chinatown of San Francisco has much historical significance. "The Chinese who
immigrants in San Francisco, who came firstly from the city of Zhongshan and Thasishan regions of
Guangdong province of mainland China, they did not want to live in a poor place, and they wanted
their family had better and wealthier life"( Tour Docent). There were many of old immigrants who
came from Guangdong, China; some of them who came here to dig gold, some of them who came
here to build a railway, and they settled their home as soon as they first arrived in San Francisco.
Now the Chinatown of San Francisco is a famous tourist attraction, and it appears to be routine for
foreign travelers to visit Chinatown when they prepare to have a trip in San Francisco. It is now
more and more famous than ever before, even the Chinatown is as famous as Golden Gate Bridge.
There is enough information that boosts numerous valuable records of old Chinese immigrants, they
are worthy of admiration and respect

Francisco Franco was the dictator of Spain from 1939 to 1975, including the time of WW2. Perhaps
he was better known as "El Caudillo," translated into English as The Leader. He was born and raised
in Spain. He was a very brilliant military general who led Nationalist rebels in defeating the Spanish
government during the Spanish Civil War. Although he was viewed as a Fascist Dictator, he strongly
opposed communism. He was an extremely important figure in the course of world history.

In 1928 he was named director of General Military Academy at Zaragoza. He was recognized as a
national hero.
Franco was engaged in 1917. His fiancée was Carmen Polo. Their marriage was delayed, however,
because Franco was called back into active duty in Morocco. They would have one daughter,
Carmen, together in 1928.
The Spanish Monarchy fell in 1931 and the new government was strongly opposed to the military.
The General Military Academy was broken up and Franco was placed on the inactive list. He was
restored to active duty in 1933 and in 1934 was promoted to major general. Franco's tactical genius
shined once again when he was called upon to crush a small band of rebels in October of 1934. After
this, he was promoted to chief of the Spanish Army's general staff. After this promotion, Franco
started to strengthen the military, as the military was weakened by the antimilitary policy of the
Spanish Republic.
The government of Spain dissolved once again and Franco was removed from the general staff. He
was moved to duty in the Canary Islands. Although it was against Franco's nature to oppose the
government, he joined Nationalist rebels against the government.
This was the beginning of the Spanish Civil War. Franco flew to Morocco and took command of the
Spanish Army there. He united the Nationalist parties and assumed the role of leader. The

Francisco Piria was born in 1847 in Montevideo. During his childhood, his family sent him to
Genoa, Italy to study with his uncle, a Jesuit monk. It was in Italy that Piria developed an interest in

Francisco Franco Essay
Francisco Franco was a general and authoritarian leader, who governed Spain from 1939 to 1975.
He came to power shortly after the start of the Spanish Civil War. In that war, he led the rebel
Nationalist Army to victory over the Loyalist forces. After the war ended in 1939, Franco held
complete control of Spain. His regime was similar to a Fascist dictatorship. He carried out the
functions of chief of state, prime minister, commander in chief, and leader of the Falange, the only
permitted political party. He adopted the title of El Caudillo, the leader. In the early years of his
regime, he tried to eliminate all opposition.
He later eased some restrictions.

executions during the war and in the years immediately following it guaranteed
the stability of Franco's authoritarian regime.
Franco kept Spain officially neutral during World War II, but after the
Axis defeat he was labeled the last of the Fascist dictators and ostracized by
the United Nations. As the Cold War gained in intensity, foreign opposition to
Franco lessened because he was against Communism. In 1953, the signing of a
military assistance pact with the United States marked the return of Spain to
international society. Franco permitted the United States to build air and naval
bases in Spain in exchange for economic and military aid. This aid helped bring
about industrial expansion. Spain's living standard rose thanks to Franco, but it
remained as one of the lowest in Western Europe.
Franco's regime became somewhat more liberal during the 1950s and
1960s. It depended for support not on the Falange, renamed the National Movement, but on a range
of political families running from those on the center right to extreme reactionaries. Franco balanced
off these groups against one another, retaining for himself a position as arbiter above the affairs of
day–to–day politics. Helped along by the general prosperity of Europe, Spain enjoyed rapid
economic growth in the 1960's. However, in the early 1960's, opposition to Franco became more
outspoken. Miners and other

Francisco Goya The Third Of May
Francisco Goya brings oils to life in this painting titled The Third of May, 1808 to life around the
year of 1814 on a canvas frame of 104.7 inches by 135.8 inches of canvas. Goya painted this piece
in remembrance of hundreds of Spanish freedom fighters that were killed by French after Napoleon
set out to concur Spain. Goya also painted an oil painting entitled The Second of May, 1808 that was
the same size and depicts the rebellion that the Spaniards help lead (Zappella, Christine 2017).
In The Third of May, 1808, you can see the lines of the guns from the men on the right drawing your
eye to the men being shot at on the left. While the soldiers wear mostly dark clothes the few to the
front grows lighter in their hue as to not be forgotten by the bright light being shown on the victims

Francisco Goya
Through his art, Francisco Goya relayed his feelings toward the political unrest that plagued Spain
during his lifetime. As an artist of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, Goya lived
through a time of political and social upheaval, especially throughout Europe. At the time, the ideas
of the Enlightenment had captivated the minds of Spain's most influential citizens and soon, that of
Goya's. Born in Fuendetodos, Spain, in 1746, Francisco Goya came from very humble beginnings.
As the son of a gilder, Goya grew up in the lower class of society, and even after his amazing
success as court painter to Spanish royalty, he highly identified himself with the everyday Spaniard

In Winter, peasants trudge through the storm with a slaughtered pig. The bright pink used in the
color of the pig is symbolic of the Rococo style. A fierce wind blows the tree to near breaking,
further communicating the harshness of the weather. Among the colorful scenes that make up this
set, it is undoubtedly in those dedicated to winter that Goya manifests, for the first time in this
cartoon, a social awareness of the everyday reality around him, the same consciousness that would
evolve toward the more extreme and dramatic works characteristic of his maturity. The social
commentary of this painting lead to its rejection by the Royal Tapestry Factory. Francisco Goya's
questioning and irreverent attitude toward life was graphically conveyed in his works. His success
with the Royal Tapestry Workshop brought his artistic talents to the attention of the Spanish
monarchs who would later give him access to the royal court. As court painter (1789), he created
realistic, penetrating portraits of his patrons. Perhaps the most notable portrait painted during this
time, is that of The Family of Charles IV. In this piece, Goya does not emphasize on any particular
member of the family. No significant focus is placed on the king, whom one would assume the
portrait should predominantly be about. He and the queen

illegitimate son in a society that canonised breeding. He was abandoned by his father, a poor

Francisco Franco: An Influential Dictator Of Spain
Francisco Franco
Francisco Franco was a dictator that ruled between 1892 and 1975 (History.com). He was in the

The Third of May
Francisco Goya
I chose to my report on Francisco Goya Third of May, 1808. This painting represents the French
taking over Spain during the time Napoleon was in reign. This invasion was a two day process but
the painting is about what happened on the third of May. "Napoleon chose to invade Spain because
he wanted to out his brother, Joseph Bonaparte, in power in Spain to have an alliance with Spain to
conquer Portugal" (Zappella, 2014). "The invasion was an ambush as the French told the Spanish
they were just passing through, but events soon quickly changed when the intentions became clear"
(Zappella, 2014). According to Christine Zappella, "on the third of May Spanish freedom fighters
were rounded up and massacred by the French. Their Spanish blood ran through the streets of
Madrid" (2014). "The artist was so profound by the evets, he recreated the uprising in his paintings"
(Zappelle, 2014). The first painting Goya created was the Second of May, which is Leonardo's

He is in the Biological Oceanography Group in his company and he is a Senior Scientist. Francisco
P. Chavez works for the company Monterey Bay Aquarium Institute MBARI for short (Francisco P.
Chavez). In 2009 Dr. Chavez did research on Equatorial Pacific moorings. In this research his
partner was his lead engineer Kent Headley (Equatorial Pacific moorings). Francisco P. Chavez used
many trials to discover if the CO2 levels in the ocean are really getting higher. He went to Peru to
run trials on the CO2 levels in the ocean there. He researched that when people drive their cars it
releases CO2 into the air, and most of that does not stay in the atmosphere. Most of the CO2 actually
goes into the ocean. Dr. Chavez said that about one million tons of CO2 will enter the ocean per
hour daily. He learned that when the CO2 enters the ocean it combines with all of the sea water and
the combination creates carbonic acid. Many of the living organisms in the ocean can and are deeply

San Francisco Bay And The Francisco Estuary
The San Francisco Bay was stumbled upon by Spanish soldiers in 1769. Upon the time of its
discovery, the Bay and the San Francisco Estuary traversed 500 square miles consisting of open
water as well as another 850 square miles of fresh and salt water marsh. There was beautiful scenery
along with the existence of various species in the beginning of its discovery. Various types of species
included sea otters, whales, large salmon, mussels and oysters, large flocks of geese and duck, as
well as shorebirds.
The San Francisco Bay, including the Delta, configures the largest estuary on the West Coast. The
San Francisco Estuary Project was created to aid in restoring the beautiful wetland habitat and in
turn will also help in conserving the biodiversity of plants and animals. Restoring the loss of

San Francisco Short Story

  • 1. San Francisco Short Story It began with the listless feeling brought on by a Sunday afternoon. A deep, gnawing feeling of being unsettled seated itself within his gut and bit at him incessantly that afternoon, when the bleached seas of fog finally began rolling back and exposing the ghostly monoliths of steel and glass, complimented by the vaguely red bridge on the edge of the city that stretched into the thicket of mist like a pathway to eternal salvation. San Francisco had always been a haunted city; a city of tragic fires, earthquakes, and a feverish lust for gold, spurred on by the constant hum that seemed to make up the very fabric of the land. It was a city of hope and courage, a beacon of civilization and modernity casting it's brilliance into the bay. But ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

He explored for more than 10 years! Pizarro was born in 1471 in Trujillo Spain. He did not attend school, but he did work on a pig farm. His father was a colonel in the Spanish Army, and was most likely raised by his side. Francisco grew tired of how poor his life was. He had a desire to have adventures and collect wealth, so he joined the Spanish Army. As a soldier, he had a lot of skills and was very effective in combat. He was still not not satisfied. After joining the Spanish Army, he didn't think that his actions were getting rewarded properly. Francisco Pizarro left for Hispaniola so that he could get noticed for his military skills. "He came to America in 1510 and took part in a number of exploratory expeditions. Including that of Vasco de Balboa, which resulted in Spain's claim to the Pacific Ocean in 1513." • 5. San Francisco Research Paper What is it like to go to San Francisco As I egress out of the San Francisco International airport I find myself in an entirely contradictory environment from which I had recently departed. This difference becomes apparent when I leave the regulated atmosphere of the terminal, when I am confronted with the smell of the ocean and the remarkable difference in temperature. I quickly shuck my coat and sweat shirt, revealing my t–shirt underneath. I smell the ocean and feel a swift breeze. My experience has just begun. San Francisco, with all of its oddities and scenic views was the topic of my paper. San Francisco founded in 1848 after the Mexican–American War, The city soon expanded exponentially after gold was discovered in california around that time. The community on the bay has overcome some major setbacks and restrictions. One event was a series of outbreaks that sent people to quarantine on Angel Island. The most major setback was the earthquake and subsequent fire of 1906. After this event, much of the city was destroyed and many people were displaced. In a defining moment, the city decided to rebuild and had built a grand complex for the world's fair in 1915. The only remnant of which, a dome and surrounding buildings housed an art museum. San Francisco has ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, one quality they all shared was the horrible traffic, it is so bad that it drove the Bay Area to build a below ground shuttle system near an active fault line. The subway is the most efficient way to go around the town. This efficiency it shares with Washington D.C. with similar traffic congestion. However, in comparison Washington's Metro is more grand than that of the BART. D.C.'s system has a similar design pattern throughout and has a more expensive feel, the BART's architecture is more limited and has a feel of a old ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 7. Francisco Pizarro's Famous Expeditions Francisco Pizarro is best known for his famous expeditions to the "New World" , his conquering of the Incas, and his help at discovering the great, big, blue of what we know as the Pacific Ocean. Pizarro living in the Renaissance era , was fond of the idea to further his knowledge by setting out on explorations. Not being able to read or write however was not going to ruin Pizarro's dream, Pizarro's inner ambition would carry him where he had always wanted to go. Francisco Pizarro Gonzales , or better known as just simply Francisco Pizarro was born in 1476 in Trujillo, Spain. Pizarro was born to the poor farmer, Captain Gonzalo Pizarro, and Francisca Gonzales. Francisco was illiterate and thus forced to herd his father's pigs. Throughout Pizarro's child and young manhood , Francisco heard multiple stories and tales of a new world. Through these stories Pizarro developed a want and longing for both adventure and fortune. At the age of 34 in 1510, Pizarro went on his first, real expedition to Uraba, Colombia with Spanish explorer Alonzo de Ojed. Even if their trip to Colombia was considered unsuccessful, Pizarro was delighted with the experience and had proven that he could make the cut. He proved that he was reliable and wasn't going to just back out or quit. Just 3 years later, in 1513 Pizarro joined Vasco Nunez de Balboa on his voyage to the "South Sea." On their way they had to cross the Isthmus of Panama, they then laid their eyes on what we modernly call the Pacific ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

His father, Gonzalo Pizarro, was an infantry captain and he taught Francisco how to fight at an early age. Francisco Pizarro never learned to read and write but he was full of adventure. When Pizarro got back, he and his brothers discovered a group of people called the Incas. They saw that the Incas had a lot of gold and greed took them over. They tricked the Incan leader and captured him. The ransom to release the Incan emperor, Atahualpa, was to fill a room measuring 22 by 17 feet with gold. The Incas did fill the room but Pizarro killed the emperor anyway and conquered the Incas. When news of Pizarro's conquest reached King Charles' ears, he was overjoyed. He expanded the territory which Pizarro governed. A lot of South America was under Spanish rule. After all of the gold was divided between all of the leaders of the expedition and the king, each man got about $52,000 in Spanish pesos. That was a lot of money back then. Almagro was jealous of Pizarro's fame and tried to take over Cuzco from Pizarro. Cuzco was the capital of the Incas. Pizarro's brothers captured and executed Almagro and some of Almagro's followers were still angry. They went ahead and assassinated Pizarro in the city that he founded, Lima. Francisco Pizarro died in 1541. Francisco Pizarro's legacy can still be felt today especially in South America. • 15. Francisco De Goya Research Papers Francisco de Goya y Lucientes was conceived on March 30, 1746, in Fuendetodos, a town in northern Spain. The child of a guilder, Goya spent the vast majority of his childhood in Saragossa. There he started considering painting around the age of fourteen. He was an understudy of José Luzán Martínez. At to begin with, Goya learned by impersonation. He duplicated the works of incredible experts, discovering motivation in progress of such craftsmen as Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez and Rembrandt van Rijn. Later, Goya moved to Madrid, where he went to work with siblings Francisco and Ramón Bayeu y Subías in their studio. At some time between late 1792 and early 1793, a serious illness, whose exact nature is not known, left Goya deaf, and he became withdrawn. During his recuperation, he undertook a series of experimental paintings. His experimental art–that would encompass paintings, drawings as well as a bitter series of aquatinted etchings, published in 1799 under the title Caprichos. French forces invaded Spain in 1808, leading to the Peninsular. Goya's involvement with the court of Joseph I, the brother of Napoleon Bonaparte, is not known: he did paint works for French patrons, but upon the restoration of the Spanish king, Ferdinand VII, in 1814, Goya denied any involvement with the intruder. In 1819, with the idea of isolating himself, he bought a country house by the Manzanares river just outside of Madrid. It was known as the Quinta del titled after the previous owner and not after Goya himself. There he created the Black Paintings with intense, haunting themes, reflective of the artist's fear of insanity, and his outlook on humanity. Several of these, including Saturn Devouring His Son, were painted directly onto the walls of his dining and sitting rooms. Goya left Spain in May 1824 for Bordeaux, where he settled, and Paris. He returned to Spain in 1826, but returned to Bordeaux, where he died in 1828 at the age of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Francisco Goya The Third Of May Essay For my writing assignment, I chose to discuss "The Third of May," by Francisco Goya. On May 2, 1808, hundreds of Goya's countrymen rebelled against the French. On May 3, these Spanish freedom fighters were rounded up and put to death by the French. Francisco Goya was in a tough position because he had supported the French Revolution, but the slaughter of his countrymen and the horrors of war made him change his tune and had a profound effect on the artist. This painting is acclaimed as one the great paintings of all time and has even been called the world's first modern painting. The work of art itself is in the early hours of the morning taking after the uprising and spotlights on two gatherings of men: a firing squad, and a scattered gathering or hostages held at gunpoint. There is a row of French soldiers aiming for a Spanish man, who puts his arms up in accommodation both to the officers and to his sure demise. There is a slope/hill behind him that represents an executioner's wall. There is a heap of grisly dead bodies that lie at his feet, painting the territory with their gushing blood. On his other side, you can see a line of his fellow countryman that can be seen extending out of the scene. You can see that they cover their eyes to abstain from watching the butcher of their kindred Spaniard, and they realize that death is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Goya's painting presents us with an anti–hero, pervaded with genuine emotion that had not seen since, the ancient Roman sculpture of The Dying Gaul. Goya's main figure is not dying heroically in battle but rather slaughtered on the side of a road like an animal. Both the scene and the dress of the men are non–descriptive, making the artistic creation an immortal bit of workmanship. This is unquestionably why this piece of work remains emotionally charged ... San Francisco 1915 San Francisco 1915 – Palace of Fine Arts The Palace of Fine Arts was one of the finest buildings constructed for the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco. It was one of the most important symbols of the fair, situated near its center, at the end of the axis on which were located the Courts of the Four Seasons and of the Universe at the center, and the Court of Abundance, with the Machinery Palace framing the other side. The Palace was designed by a well known local architect, Bernard Maybeck (b. New York, New York 1882; d. Berkeley, California 1957) who studied architecture at the Paris Ecole des Beaux Arts. There were ochre columns, topped by boxes, mixed with pale green ones. The boxes were originally meant to house small trees and hanging vines, but these were not planted for budgetary reasons. At each corner of the boxes stood statues of women looking inwards, sculpted by Ulric Ellerhusen. They were meant to represent the melancholy of life without art. The colonnades stood along the side of the lagoon, as can be seen in the second image, with the reflection of the tranquil water adding a pleasant element. Along the side of the walkway in the pergola was a garden of small trees and shrubbery. Plants were present everywhere in the Palace, along the pergola and the rotunda, befitting the theme of a decaying ruin, overrun by nature. According to Maybeck, "it is the water and the trees" that people came to see (Macomber, 23). The natural scenery was integral to his design. The combination of majestic ... • 25. Mark Twain's The San Francisco Earthquake San Francisco is a historic city on the coast of California. It is known throughout history for experiencing many earthquakes, as it sits next to the San Andreas fault which runs up and down the state. The city becomes the setting for Mark Twain's narrative essay, The San Francisco Earthquake which recounts the events of an earthquake known as the "great" earthquake. In the ensuing disaster, Twain does not direct his focus on the destruction of the city as much as he does on the people's reactions. Through his writing, Twain wants to show that when faced with terror, people will resort to mindless and silly behavior. Twain begins his essay by saying, "I enjoyed my first earthquake." A sarcastic tone is created through this statement, as normally one would not find joy in experiencing an earthquake. Throughout the essay, Twain describes the actions of the people with similar sarcasm and exaggeration. When he describes a woman carrying a child who was running "...down the street holding it by the ankles as if it were a dressed turkey," this imagery of the child is funny, but it also implies that the women is in such a state of panic that she is not thinking clearly and does not notice the way she is holding her child. ... • 27. Francisco Goya May 3 1808 Francisco Goya's The Executions of May 3, 1808, is a remarkably interesting piece of art. This piece represents a protest against the Napoleon Occupational Army in Madrid. There are various visual elements and design principles in the art, which will be covered. The beginning of this ILO will contain the visual elements first, followed by the design principles, and what they mean in the artwork. In Goya's art, we can see the primary, visual element of lines. Lines represent motion, dynamics, and direction. The soldiers are aiming their rifles at a group of prisoners waiting for execution. Horizontal lines indicate a peaceful scene, however, in this case, it would be appropriate to say they mean a sense of destruction or death, as the title of the art depicts. As the view follows the direction of the lines, the viewer is immediately drawn to the man with the bright white shirt. The values of the piece are relatively dark and morbid, however, when we look at the man with the white shirt, we can see the opposite effect of the bright white shirt. Going back to the element of lines, once the viewer looks at the man with the white shirt, you can see his hands are in a diagonal position. These diagonal lines represent dynamics and tension. The pressure comes from the imminent execution of that man. When we talk ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... We must also deduce whether the balance is symmetrical or asymmetrical. His success with the Royal Tapestry Workshop brought his artistic talents to the attention of the Spanish monarchs who would later give him access to the royal court. • 64. Personal Narrative-Francisco Man Francisco Franco man I just do not know what to say about that guy. We went to boot camp together; then we were told we were both going on the USS Nimitz to fight the naval battle against the Iraqians. There is just something weird about that guy that I just do not like at all. He has this weird look about him all the time as if a shark was trying to catch his prey. Personally I think he is up to something big. I have tried to convince multiple other people that the guy is bad, but it is like trying to trying to stick a piece of wood through a rhinoceros's skin; it does not work. "Franco you are under arrest, and you have a lot of speaking up to do. As for you Archibald when we get back, I will talk about getting you promoted," he said with a look of disgust. I smiled though because I was so proud of myself for catching Franco, and I knew we weren't going to die. "Start speaking up Franco," the Lieutenant repeated. "To be plain and simple, I am working for Iraq and have been ever since before boot camp. I was just going to try to blow up this ship," he frankly stated. "There will be an investigation for this. To you Archibald go get some sleep because it's late. I hate to say this, but I wish I would have listened to you earlier." "Thank you sir. • 70. Francisco Goya Third Of May Essay The Third of May Francisco Goya I chose to my report on Francisco Goya Third of May, 1808. This painting represents the French taking over Spain during the time Napoleon was in reign. This invasion was a two day process but the painting is about what happened on the third of May. "Napoleon chose to invade Spain because he wanted to out his brother, Joseph Bonaparte, in power in Spain to have an alliance with Spain to conquer Portugal" (Zappella, 2014). "The invasion was an ambush as the French told the Spanish they were just passing through, but events soon quickly changed when the intentions became clear" (Zappella, 2014). According to Christine Zappella, "on the third of May Spanish freedom fighters were rounded up and massacred by the French. Their Spanish blood ran through the streets of Madrid" (2014). "The artist was so profound by the evets, he recreated the uprising in his paintings" (Zappelle, 2014). The first painting Goya created was the Second of May, which is Leonardo's Battle of Anghiari. • 72. Francisco Chavez Research Paper I researched the scientist Francisco P. Chavez. Francisco researches in the study of oceanography. He is in the Biological Oceanography Group in his company and he is a Senior Scientist. Francisco P. Chavez works for the company Monterey Bay Aquarium Institute MBARI for short (Francisco P. Chavez). In 2009 Dr. Chavez did research on Equatorial Pacific moorings. In this research his partner was his lead engineer Kent Headley (Equatorial Pacific moorings). Francisco P. Chavez used many trials to discover if the CO2 levels in the ocean are really getting higher. He went to Peru to run trials on the CO2 levels in the ocean there. He researched that when people drive their cars it releases CO2 into the air, and most of that does not stay in the atmosphere. Most of the CO2 actually goes into the ocean. Dr. Chavez said that about one million tons of CO2 will enter the ocean per hour daily. He learned that when the CO2 enters the ocean it combines with all of the sea water and the combination creates carbonic acid. Many of the living organisms in the ocean can and are deeply affected by the carbonic acid in a dramatic way. Francisco P. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
