Merced And Redding Case Study
Fifteen years ago Merced and Redding were in a battle for the next University of California. Even
though Merced was located close to several other University of California campuses, the school was
built in Merced. The residents of the northstate are now patiently waiting for their chance at a new
university. In January of 2015, discussion began regarding another new campus; a campus centered
around STEM (science, technology, engineering and math.)
A science and technology campus would be perfect for Redding. The city is rich in agriculture and
surrounded by rivers, lakes and mountains. It's a city growing at exponential rates that has given rise
to new small business growth. It's home to Shasta dam, which is a main source of water and the city
has it's own utility company. The cost of living is reasonable as compared to the majority of the
cities that house the University of California campuses.
People would want to attend a university located in Redding. Recreational sports nearby include ...

Of those people in Shasta County who have a higher education degree, many are held by people
who moved from other areas of the state for management positions or by those whom come to the
area to retire. The situation is even worse in some of the surrounding counties, for example, only
13% of the population over age 25 have an advanced degree in Lassen County.
Shasta County is in the center of 7 counties, and Redding is in the heart of Shasta County, and there
is no public university system in this area. The closest University of California is about 200 miles
away, in Davis, CA. Ofen people leave the area for an education. Most of these college graduates
will never return, because there are no jobs waiting for them. This has created a cycle of what the

Santa Cruz Essay
So how does the Santa Cruz EF appeal to the communities and their audiences? As stated above, the
Santa Cruz EF host weekly meetings where people can learn or input their opinions on certain
environmental injustice. Individuals can come together and tackle the issue as a community. Then,
they will be able to provide a solution or target the main source of the problem. After figuring out
the problem and when the individuals finished their plan of action, they will post flyers in
downtown, post them on the University billboards, and use social networks to advertise the plan. In
addition, the group does fundraisers and demonstration to explain their purpose and the
fundamentals needed to comprehend the movement.1 After the public is educated ... Show more

For instance, the idea of not moving unless they are being detained, has been used through students'
movements, women's movements, and many more. And, through history with the mention
movements, the no–compromise stance has been indeed effective because the activist movements
have change the world drastically. Moving on, the tree–sitter strategy has been proven that it has
been effective in slowing down the process of deforestation by large corporations. This is true
because many corporations do not cut down trees that have people in it since they do not want to
harm the individuals. However, I believe that the tree–sitter tactic is very sketchy and dangerous
because even if the tree does not get cut, the safety issues are a concern. The tree–sitter can fall off
from the tree, also, he or she can even harm the native birds that lives in the tree, and much more.
Therefore, the Santa Cruz EF should figure out another tactic to slow down the process of
deforestation. For instance, the strategy of surrounding the trees with about 2 to 3 bodies will be
much safer and perhaps more effective. This may be true because by being next to the tree, the
individuals can talk with the corporation's representative and the safety hazard will be

The Benefits Of UC Berkeley
The University of California, Berkeley, or UC Berkeley, is one of the finest colleges. UC Berkeley is
located in Berkeley, California, and is a public coed school with approximately 27,496 students.
Oski the Bear, the mascot, was first seen in 1941 with the school colors, Berkeley Blue and
California Gold. Despite all the choices students have after high school, UC Berkeley is the most
sensible option considering its academics, achievements, and uniqueness. First, Berkeley is an
amazing school academically. There are a myriad of majors for incoming freshman to choose from.
Some of them include art, biology, business, and math. The more popular of the majors are social
sciences, biological sciences, and engineering. Therefore, by going

Malcolm Baldrige Award Essay
An award is token that is designed to honor the best and motivate individuals and organizations to
perform at their highest level. The Malcolm Baldrige Award is a national quality award also known
as (MBNQA). It is given each year by the President of the United States to companies that display
quality and excellence in performance. It has been set up so three awards may be given out yearly in
all of the following categories: manufacturing, Service, Nonprofit, Education, Healthcare and lastly
in Small Businesses (Nist, 2015). The award is named after the late Secretary of Commerce,
Malcolm Baldrige, and it's based on seven areas known as the Baldrige Criteria for Performance
Excellence. The MBNQA is only awarded to American companies who submit their name for
consideration by the independent Board of Directors and have achieved a superior level of quality in
their products and services. This award is important because it inspires all companies to improve

However, the Malcolm Baldrige award places an organization into a distinguished and exclusive
group because of its inflexible approach to standards of quality and performance excellence.
The Malcolm Baldrige Award is the only award that methodically evaluate an organization on its
collaborative approach towards improving their performance in Leadership, Strategic Planning,
Customer Focus, Market Focus, Measurement, analysis, and knowledge management, Human
Resource focus, Process management, and Business/ Organizational performance results. All these
factors are direct contributors to the improvement of a company. In the other awards, the criterion of
quality assessment is not as in–depth and lacks the ability to meticulously assess all aspects of an
organization.

Nancy Bayley Essay
Nancy Bayley was a key player in the study of child development throughout her long career. Nancy
was born September 1899 in the Dalles, Oregon. Bayley did not go to public school until she was
eight years old due to poor health. When she did start school, she was able to catch up very quickly.
She attended the University of Washington with plans on teaching English. She took an introductory
psychology course taught by Edwin R. Guthrie, a well–known behavioral psychologist, which
sparked her interest in the field and she decided to continue studying psychology. She completed
and received both her bachelor of science and master or science degrees in psychology at the
university of Washington. In 1926 she had her master's thesis published in Pedagogical Seminary
and Journal of Genetic Psychology. Also in 1926 Bayley acquired her doctorate from the university
of Iowa. With her doctorate, she decided to further her research on mental and physical growth and
early mental abilities. Bayley's career spanned over 60 years, where she worked on many well–
known studies of development. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

work on the Berkeley Growth Study. The Berkeley Growth Study wanted to better understand the
standards of behavioral development and physical growth at different ages. It was a 40– year
longitudinal study that measured development in 74 subjects from infancy through adulthood.
Bayley used data from this study to help connect infant size with later adult size. In 1940, the results
were published as tables used to predict adult height, within one inch, based a child's height and
skeletal range. The tables became important tools for pediatricians and endocrinologists diagnosing

The Free Speech Movement (FSM) at the University of California at Berkeley started during the fall

and that it came from someone higher up on the board at Berkeley. So with that student groups
defied the policy by setting up their tables as before, and also in front of the administration building
facing Sproul Plaza, where they had never been before. (Freeman, Jo) While the tables were being

Applying And Choosing A Place Of Higher Education Essay
As childhood comfort slowly slips away when children transition from elementary, middle, to high
school, the idea that seemed so fantastical in toddlers' daydreams becomes concrete and frightening:
the future. High school students are presented with a short four year period to decide what they want
to pursue, and the junior year of high school is where most students are hit hardest. As a junior, the
daunting task of preparing for one's future is suddenly presented, and everything one has
accomplished in life, in combination with many standardized tests, will be assembled to do one task:
applying and choosing a place of higher education. Three important criteria in college searching are
admission standards, location, and athletic programs, and two post–high school institutions, Rice
University and the University of California– Berkeley, will be compared based on these aspects. As
a primary benchmark, the admission standards for a university will need to be evaluated in order to
decide if a college is suitable for one's academic rigor. Admission standards for Rice University
consist of "either the SAT and two SAT Subject Tests in fields related to their proposed area of
study, or the ACT Plus Writing test" ("Standardized Testing") in addition to: a high school transcript,
the Common Application with Rice Writing Supplement, $75 dollar application fee, a counselor
recommendation, one teacher recommendation, and midyear grades from senior year; the office of

College Costs Project A: Plan of Investigation What will be the cost of obtaining a college education
in University of California, Berkeley – Haas School of Business for Business Administration &
Management or NYU Stern School of Business for Management and Organization? In this project,
the student will determine the cost of receiving a college education in one private school, as well as
a public school. The student will calculate all expenses that will be incurred during the time of
college including tuition fees, book costs, recreational expenses, food, and other costs. The student
will additionally choose a career he wishes to attain, and, based on the college he attends, will
calculate the likelihood of obtaining that position after college. The chosen profession will also be
representative of the level of education, desired income, and interests the student wishes to have.
After predicting the annual income for this occupation, a strategy will be made to pay off federal
and private loans after college which will take into account other post–college expenses and
prospective income. The student will include inflation rates for all components of this project
because prices are likely to change before attendance in the years 2017–2021. This project will help

reason I apply to each school. As for that, I am glad the wait–list option gives me a chance to

that almost everyone has heard of UC Berkeley at least once sometime in their life. When I was
much younger, I always heard about Berkeley whether it be from various internet articles or simply

We were learning about the Civil Rights Movement in the late 20th Century and within my

called the Berkeley Protests which were a series of events of Berkeley students standing up for what
was right. I instantly fell in love with UC Berkeley as I read more and more about proud Berkeley
students standing up for what they believed in politically and socially. See, my overall interest in
Berkeley and being a Political Science major there does not only stem from its huge number of great
programs but rather what I saw made someone a "person of Berkeley". The more I read about
Berkeley students, the more I am convinced that what makes them great are the social values
instilled in them. The more I learn about Berkeley, the more I see that their students are people of
great integrity and devotion to duty as they are members who give back to society and stand up for

Strategic Planning Should Not Be Underestimated
Introduction
The importance of strategic planning should not be underestimated. Without proper strategic
planning any organization is just waiting for unseen problems to interrupt normal business
operations. Strategic planning could be considered the backbone of the foundation of an
organization. It is the glue which links the organization's objectives to the customers themselves.
Strategic planning helps the organization in short term goals and perhaps more importantly
determine the items need for term success. The investment in strategic planning can be seen in
specific elements which will aid in the company's ability to grow as well as expand its market area.
In addition to goal setting strategic planning could be used to evaluate what may be beneficial to any
organization's success process. This means determining which avenues to use valuable resources for
and others in which to discontinue or scale back on. Because of the overall importance of strategic
planning how to define whether a strategic planning is valid must also be given much consideration.
The Baldridge criteria is a highly reliable source as well as well–known institute, of which many
organizations use to base their strategic planning on. The Baldrige Program oversees the nation 's
only Presidential award for performance excellence while offering criteria, assessments, tools,
training and a community for those dedicated to helping organizations improve. According to the

Health Issues In The Black Community Essay
The Black community's ears are attuned to the sounds of the salon–the drone of clippers, scissors
snick–snipping locks of hair, gossiping voices muffled by the hum of a hooded dryer. But
Chicagoans might hear something new as they sit in the salon chair: medical advice. Soon, salon and
barbershop patrons may get educated about kidney health as they wait on their braids, curls and
fades. Focusing on the salon as a cornerstone of the Black community, the National Kidney
Foundation of Illinois is launching its Health is in Style program, which will train hair stylists to act
as lay educators on the issues of chronic kidney disease, hypertension and diabetes, all of which
disproportionately affect the Black community. In the past, NKFI has provided free health
screenings across Chicago, but members of the Black community have been reticent to participate,

The records include case management records, and information on incidents and offenses. Crime
labs, lie detector test and fingerprinting are all very well known type of policing introduced by the
Berkeley Police Department under August Vollmer. Vollmer's enthusiasm for scientific lie detection
was a natural outcome of his stand against the third degree, and he never lost faith that new
breakthroughs would eventually correct the inadequacies that plagued the use
Vollmer and Wilson 6 of the lie detector in criminal investigation. John Larson, a "college cop",
student of Vollmer, who built the first lie detector in the Berkeley department, later said that he felt
the technique had been turned into a form of "psychological third degree," and confessed that he
sometimes regretted having had a hand in its development (National Commission on Law
Observance and Enforcement). Community relations also play a major role in the modernization of
policing. The interactions among different police departments and communities allow for effective
policing. Many of Vollmer's ideas came from his associates, from police experiences in other
countries, and from academic sources. Vollmer recognized the potential of these ideas and unified
them into a working whole, using his energy and dedication to set a pattern for police reform that
continues to this day.

Argumentative Essay To Cal Berkeley
Elite colleges in California are strenuous to enroll into, even more so if you're a student of color.
Many elite colleges in California are impacted with incoming freshman, that they have to turn to
other factors. More specifically the students test scores, essays, letters of recommendation, and the
life of the student are used to determine which freshman to admit. Today, there are fewer pathways
to middle class jobs that result in a push to go to college. Mt. Eden student Marcela Alvarez must be

The Cuckoo's Egg: Cliff's Persistence By Clifford Stoll "The Cuckoo's Egg" is a story of
persistence, love for one's work and is just plain funny! The story starts out with Clifford Stoll being
"recycled" to a computer analyst/webmaster. Cliff, as he is affectionately called, is a
long–haired ex–hippie that works at Lawrence Berkeley Lab. He originally was an astronomer, but
since his grant wore out, he became a mainframe master. He was glad that instead of throwing him
out into the unemployment office, the Lab recycled their people and downstairs he went, to the

Any way, the hacker only logged on once during the night, but left an 80 foot souvenir behind. Cliff

leaves its eggs in other bird's nest. If it not were for the other species ignorance, the cuckoo would
die out. The same is for the mainframe. There is a housecleaning program that runs every five
minutes on the Berkeley UNIX. It is called atrun. The hacker put his version of atrun into the

ozone layer simply evaporating, I hope I will be someone who can contribute to stopping a disaster
such as those from happening. I don't know much of the career I would have to go into to begin

"I suggest that you... make the affirmation to the Constitution first," said Regent Brodie Ahlport.
That was the sole revision to the proposed oath. It passed through the board unanimously

In order to design such a building for seismological risks, preliminary research is done about the
geological conditions of the city, fault locations, and earthquake history. Three earthquakes were
chosen that occurred in the vicinity of the city, and their characteristics were analyzed, as were any
effects resulting from those quakes, including liquefaction, landslides, or settlement. At the
conclusion of this project, recommendations for the structure were provided in relation to the
seismic analysis of the area. The structure must follow any codes regarding seismic design, as well
as perform up to the standard set by various organizations, such as the American Society of Civil

Introduction
1.1 Background Information
Earthquakes rank as one of the most devastating natural disasters that can occur, causing damage to
multiple facets of society. Earthquakes can cause major damage to vital infrastructure, cost human
lives, and trigger other events that can cause even more destruction. Throughout history, earthquakes
have caused millions, even billions of dollars of damage to cities and towns alike. Much of the
destruction resulting from earthquakes is a product of poor design against seismic loads and forces.
However as we have become more educated about what causes earthquakes and where they come
from, we have been able to better fortify our structures to resist such forces, and have been able to

Innovative leaders specifically in America's criminal justice history and their actions, created the

He believed that police officers ought to be the "finest men" and the position "is the highest calling
in the world" (BENNETT ). Vollmer ran his department similar to the structure of the military
(BENNETT ). He also believed that education was one of the best ways to create the brightest police
officers. Because of this, he established the very first police school in Berkeley in 1908 (BENNETT
). He and another police inspector taught courses such as crime scene investigation, photography,
first aid and sanitation (BENNETT ). Although Vollmer had only a grade school education, he relied
on his military background and read criminology textbooks from Europe to teach himself
(BENNETT ). Police modernization became very important to Vollmer as he created ways to stop
corruption and crimes in Berkeley. Under him, Berkeley Police Department saw great reformation.
To ensure his revolutionary idea to educate police officers were recognized in the educational
system, Vollmer pleaded with the University of California at Berkeley to take on the law
enforcement profession with an academic approach. In 1916, the first criminal justice academic
degree was available to students (BENNETT ). Vollmer pursued this innovative idea because he
strongly believed that it would help eliminate the corruptions and create a more organized law
enforcement personnel and procedures. Not long after, other universities adapted their own police

Persuasive Essay On Immigration Reform
Some argue that immigrants will take our jobs after the allowance of legalization and attendance of
postsecondary education. It is a true fact that those who become legal in the labor market will
demand better treatment, respect, increased wages, and employee benefits. Those, who already have
a degree, and clean houses for living due to their status, will apply for jobs equal to their education.
Although the fact that they will take our job is true to some degree, it is a rhetoric marketed
exaggerator, installed to create fear, and lead to an opposition to immigration reform. The
legalization will affect most companies that benefit from a mistreatment of undocumented
immigrants and will affect businesses that profit from underpaying their hired laborers, documented
or undocumented. According to Aviva Chomsky, "Governments have made sure that there are
people without rights to fulfill business's need for cheap workers and high profits" (126). Businesses
tend to oppose restriction on immigration today because inequality maintains a population of poor
people who lack access to resources, and who may have little alternative but to accept jobs under the
worst of conditions (15). "The answer to the low–wage problem is not to restrict the rights of people
at the bottom even more (through deportations, criminalization, etc.) but to challenge the accord
between business and government that promote the low–wage, high–profit model" (27). Immigrants
have always flooded America, to work as a cheap labor, work under strenuous conditions, send
remittance to their home countries, and return home. The fact that people believed immigrants come
to steal the American wealth is altered by the globalization of the economy, and it hurts to have a
vulnerable nation labor force to compete with other countries. According to Chomsky, "As of 2005,
Social Security was receiving about $7 billion a year through false social security numbers provided
by illegal immigrant workers" (38). This fact is based on a low–income/low immigrant wage.
Therefore, allowing immigrants to access higher education and better–paid jobs will result in higher
income taxes, higher real estate and consumer's taxes, community involvement and volunteering. If

Berkeley's School of Criminology
The Berkeley School of Criminology was founded in the early 1950's and it's faculty was of various
FBI agents, District Attorneys and Chief of police, and an assistant chief of security from one of
California 's concentration camps for Japanese–Americans during World War II, all together the
school's faculty had over to 125 years of experience working for prosecutorial agencies and
institutions. In the late 1950's and into the 1960's the school changed deans and changed a lot of its
staffing around and that was a major change, a good one because Berkeley's new dean had brought
in over one million dollars in federal and foundation grants that helped build the schools
infrastructure and build its political influence in the academy, this was all motivated by the
California Master plan for Higher Education and the school assumed a more sophisticated and
Liberal role.
The Bay Area where the campus was located has always had a tradition of rebellion and
nonconformity which, when combined with the beat poets and progressive radio stations of the time,
helped to cultivate the cultural radicalism that Berkeley was known for. The president of the
University, Clark Kerr, attempted to limit the new surge of political activism by issuing what was
known as the Kerr Directives. These were somewhat liberalized rule that governed campus political
speech and activities. It prohibited a lot of

Fayol's “Principles” in a University Library
In reading through Management Basics for Information Professionals by Evans and Ward, one of the
theories of management that stood out to me was the "administrative approach" (2007). Henry Fayol
was one of the main proponents of this approach, though there were many others as well. Fayol
"divided organizational activities into five major groups" and also identified 14 principles of
management and believed that "management is a skill one can learn, rather than a talent received at
birth" (Evans & Ward, 2007). In the context of my personal experience I found that it might be
interesting to compare my experiences as a student employee in the UC Berkeley library to some of
the more applicable aspects of Fayol's principles of management. I ... Show more content on

Another of Fayol's principles had to do with authority and responsibility. In the department of the
main stacks, there was a staff librarian who acted as our manager, as well as a group of students that
performed supervisory tasks. In my last year or so in the library I joined this group, and was given
the task of doing some of the day–to–day tasks that kept our department running. These included
opening and closing procedures, keeping statistics of the work done by students, assigning hourly
jobs, training, and so on. The important idea in this principle is that "giving orders and being
responsible must go together" (Evans & Ward, 2007). I would argue that in our department, while
we were responsible for making sure the work was done as well as assigning jobs, if there was a
difficult situation the supervisors were able to refer to the staff librarian for support. For example, if
one student was chronically underperforming or late, we would notify the librarian. If one
considered the group of supervisors plus the librarian who managed us to make up the
"management" of the department, then in whole authority and responsibility did go together. I would
also say that instead of thinking of student supervisors as not being as responsible as they could be,
it would be more plausible to say that the hourly assignment of jobs and other such tasks were ones
that were delegated to them by the librarian, because while he was more responsible, there was no
way that he could

Defining to the Smallest Detail the Freedom of Speech Right
Introduction to the root of discussion
The first amendment in the U.S Constitution of freedom of speech has created controversy. This
controversy has been seen on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, since the
freedom of speech movement in the 1960s. In the academic school year 2017–2018 during the fall
semester, Free Speech Week took place. This event created protests and conversations around hate
speech vs free speech by faculty and staff on campus, and news articles off campus.
Research Questions
Where do we draw a line between Free Speech and Hate Speech? Why does the first amendment of
free speech come at a cost with hate speech? What really are the speakers, who were invited for free
speech, arguing in the media and in legal terms? Lastly, whether UC Berkeley students who
participated in the protests to cancel the speaker events, violated Milo Yiannopoulos and others
freedom of speech. My main question is how can free speech be articulated and expressed without
other people taking offense and diminish hate speech.
First Amendment Definition
The First Amendment states, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion,
or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the
right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a

Persuasive Essay On Abortion In College
University of California (UC) Berkeley students are lamenting the cost and the time it takes to

Just this month, UC Berkeley students launched a petition for the campus to dole out abortion pills
at the on–campus health center. Activists are complaining that one has to pay around US$500 to get
their hands on abortion pills and visit clinics several times just to undergo the procedure, The

"When medication abortion is not available at [University Health Services], students who are

on academic performance and mental health," the resolution says. "Abortion is a common health–

Meanwhile, Berkeley's UHS Communications Manage Kim Jarboe sent The College Fix a statement

Merced And Redding Case Study

  • 1. Merced And Redding Case Study Fifteen years ago Merced and Redding were in a battle for the next University of California. Even though Merced was located close to several other University of California campuses, the school was built in Merced. The residents of the northstate are now patiently waiting for their chance at a new university. In January of 2015, discussion began regarding another new campus; a campus centered around STEM (science, technology, engineering and math.) A science and technology campus would be perfect for Redding. The city is rich in agriculture and surrounded by rivers, lakes and mountains. It's a city growing at exponential rates that has given rise to new small business growth. It's home to Shasta dam, which is a main source of water and the city has it's own utility company. The cost of living is reasonable as compared to the majority of the cities that house the University of California campuses. People would want to attend a university located in Redding. Recreational sports nearby include ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Of those people in Shasta County who have a higher education degree, many are held by people who moved from other areas of the state for management positions or by those whom come to the area to retire. The situation is even worse in some of the surrounding counties, for example, only 13% of the population over age 25 have an advanced degree in Lassen County. Shasta County is in the center of 7 counties, and Redding is in the heart of Shasta County, and there is no public university system in this area. The closest University of California is about 200 miles away, in Davis, CA. Ofen people leave the area for an education. Most of these college graduates will never return, because there are no jobs waiting for them. This has created a cycle of what the locals call "brain ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Santa Cruz Essay So how does the Santa Cruz EF appeal to the communities and their audiences? As stated above, the Santa Cruz EF host weekly meetings where people can learn or input their opinions on certain environmental injustice. Individuals can come together and tackle the issue as a community. Then, they will be able to provide a solution or target the main source of the problem. After figuring out the problem and when the individuals finished their plan of action, they will post flyers in downtown, post them on the University billboards, and use social networks to advertise the plan. In addition, the group does fundraisers and demonstration to explain their purpose and the fundamentals needed to comprehend the movement.1 After the public is educated ... And, through history with the mention movements, the no–compromise stance has been indeed effective because the activist movements have change the world drastically. Moving on, the tree–sitter strategy has been proven that it has been effective in slowing down the process of deforestation by large corporations. This is true because many corporations do not cut down trees that have people in it since they do not want to harm the individuals. However, I believe that the tree–sitter tactic is very sketchy and dangerous because even if the tree does not get cut, the safety issues are a concern. The tree–sitter can fall off from the tree, also, he or she can even harm the native birds that lives in the tree, and much more. Therefore, the Santa Cruz EF should figure out another tactic to slow down the process of deforestation. For instance, the strategy of surrounding the trees with about 2 to 3 bodies will be much safer and perhaps more effective. This may be true because by being next to the tree, the individuals can talk with the corporation's representative and the safety hazard will be ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 13. Applying And Choosing A Place Of Higher Education Essay As childhood comfort slowly slips away when children transition from elementary, middle, to high school, the idea that seemed so fantastical in toddlers' daydreams becomes concrete and frightening: the future. High school students are presented with a short four year period to decide what they want to pursue, and the junior year of high school is where most students are hit hardest. As a junior, the daunting task of preparing for one's future is suddenly presented, and everything one has accomplished in life, in combination with many standardized tests, will be assembled to do one task: applying and choosing a place of higher education. Three important criteria in college searching are admission standards, location, and athletic programs, and two post–high school institutions, Rice University and the University of California– Berkeley, will be compared based on these aspects. As a primary benchmark, the admission standards for a university will need to be evaluated in order to decide if a college is suitable for one's academic rigor. Admission standards for Rice University consist of "either the SAT and two SAT Subject Tests in fields related to their proposed area of study, or the ACT Plus Writing test" ("Standardized Testing") in addition to: a high school transcript, the Common Application with Rice Writing Supplement, $75 dollar application fee, a counselor recommendation, one teacher recommendation, and midyear grades from senior year; the office of admissions will ... • 19. UC Berkeley Personal Statement I feel as though one of the most important questions not asked on the general UC application is the reason I apply to each school. As for that, I am glad the wait–list option gives me a chance to elaborate on the true purpose of me applying to specifically, UC Berkeley. I think it is quite apparent that almost everyone has heard of UC Berkeley at least once sometime in their life. When I was much younger, I always heard about Berkeley whether it be from various internet articles or simply listening to people mention something about it. However, being a small child, I never really payed attention to what Berkeley really was. We were learning about the Civil Rights Movement in the late 20th Century and within my textbook, I read about Berkeley's contributions to the mass movement. During the 1960s, the Free Speech Movement and Civil Rights Movement were constantly fueled by a sequence of protests called the Berkeley Protests which were a series of events of Berkeley students standing up for what was right. I instantly fell in love with UC Berkeley as I read more and more about proud Berkeley students standing up for what they believed in politically and socially. See, my overall interest in Berkeley and being a Political Science major there does not only stem from its huge number of great programs but rather what I saw made someone a "person of Berkeley". The more I read about Berkeley students, the more I am convinced that what makes them great are the social values instilled in them. The more I learn about Berkeley, the more I see that their students are people of great integrity and devotion to duty as they are members who give back to society and stand up for others. UC Berkeley Our mission is to further the frontiers of primary vision care practice and vision science research through selection of a diverse and excellent faculty and staff and the most promising students whose talents and backgrounds will be responsive to society. The University of California was founded in 1868, born out of a vision in the State Constitution of a university that would contribute even more than California's gold to the happiness of advancing generations. In 1866, the land that comprises the current Berkeley campus was purchased by the private College of California. As well as the stone ball in front of the Campanile is now referred to as the "4.0 Ball." Rubbing it before taking an exam is considered good luck. In addition, Berkeley was named for the Irish theologian and poet George Berkeley. The Free Speech Movement started in 1964 at UC Berkeley and led to a college campus phenomenon that was first inspired by the struggle for civil rights and fueled by opposition to the Vietnam War. Furthermore, the campus colors are blue and gold. Blue was chosen for the California sky and ocean and the Yale graduates that moved west to establish the university and gold was chosen for the "Golden State." • 35. Strategic Planning Should Not Be Underestimated Introduction The importance of strategic planning should not be underestimated. Without proper strategic planning any organization is just waiting for unseen problems to interrupt normal business operations. Strategic planning could be considered the backbone of the foundation of an organization. It is the glue which links the organization's objectives to the customers themselves. Strategic planning helps the organization in short term goals and perhaps more importantly determine the items need for term success. The investment in strategic planning can be seen in specific elements which will aid in the company's ability to grow as well as expand its market area. In addition to goal setting strategic planning could be used to evaluate what may be beneficial to any organization's success process. This means determining which avenues to use valuable resources for and others in which to discontinue or scale back on. Because of the overall importance of strategic planning how to define whether a strategic planning is valid must also be given much consideration. But Chicagoans might hear something new as they sit in the salon chair: medical advice. Soon, salon and barbershop patrons may get educated about kidney health as they wait on their braids, curls and fades. Focusing on the salon as a cornerstone of the Black community, the National Kidney Foundation of Illinois is launching its Health is in Style program, which will train hair stylists to act as lay educators on the issues of chronic kidney disease, hypertension and diabetes, all of which disproportionately affect the Black community. In the past, NKFI has provided free health screenings across Chicago, but members of the Black community have been reticent to participate, said Regina White, Community Health Education & Volunteer Manager for NFKI. John Larson, a "college cop", student of Vollmer, who built the first lie detector in the Berkeley department, later said that he felt the technique had been turned into a form of "psychological third degree," and confessed that he sometimes regretted having had a hand in its development (National Commission on Law Observance and Enforcement). Community relations also play a major role in the modernization of policing. The interactions among different police departments and communities allow for effective policing. Many of Vollmer's ideas came from his associates, from police experiences in other countries, and from academic sources. Police modernization became very important to Vollmer as he created ways to stop corruption and crimes in Berkeley. Under him, Berkeley Police Department saw great reformation. To ensure his revolutionary idea to educate police officers were recognized in the educational system, Vollmer pleaded with the University of California at Berkeley to take on the law enforcement profession with an academic approach. In 1916, the first criminal justice academic degree was available to students (BENNETT ). Vollmer pursued this innovative idea because he strongly believed that it would help eliminate the corruptions and create a more organized law enforcement personnel and procedures. • 64. Persuasive Essay On Immigration Reform Some argue that immigrants will take our jobs after the allowance of legalization and attendance of postsecondary education. It is a true fact that those who become legal in the labor market will demand better treatment, respect, increased wages, and employee benefits. Those, who already have a degree, and clean houses for living due to their status, will apply for jobs equal to their education. Although the fact that they will take our job is true to some degree, it is a rhetoric marketed exaggerator, installed to create fear, and lead to an opposition to immigration reform. The legalization will affect most companies that benefit from a mistreatment of undocumented immigrants and will affect businesses that profit from underpaying their hired laborers, documented or undocumented. According to Aviva Chomsky, "Governments have made sure that there are people without rights to fulfill business's need for cheap workers and high profits" (126). Businesses tend to oppose restriction on immigration today because inequality maintains a population of poor people who lack access to resources, and who may have little alternative but to accept jobs under the worst of conditions (15). "The answer to the low–wage problem is not to restrict the rights of people at the bottom even more (through deportations, criminalization, etc.) but to challenge the accord between business and government that promote the low–wage, high–profit model" (27). Immigrants have always flooded America, to work as a cheap labor, work under strenuous conditions, send remittance to their home countries, and return home. The fact that people believed immigrants come to steal the American wealth is altered by the globalization of the economy, and it hurts to have a vulnerable nation labor force to compete with other countries. According to Chomsky, "As of 2005, Social Security was receiving about $7 billion a year through false social security numbers provided by illegal immigrant workers" (38). This fact is based on a low–income/low immigrant wage. Therefore, allowing immigrants to access higher education and better–paid jobs will result in higher income taxes, higher real estate and consumer's taxes, community involvement and volunteering. • 66. Berkeley 's School Of Criminology Christian Everett Jennifer Edwards Criminology 24 April, 2016 Berkeley's School of Criminology The Berkeley School of Criminology was founded in the early 1950's and it's faculty was of various FBI agents, District Attorneys and Chief of police, and an assistant chief of security from one of California 's concentration camps for Japanese–Americans during World War II, all together the school's faculty had over to 125 years of experience working for prosecutorial agencies and institutions. In the late 1950's and into the 1960's the school changed deans and changed a lot of its staffing around and that was a major change, a good one because Berkeley's new dean had brought in over one million dollars in federal and foundation grants that helped build the schools infrastructure and build its political influence in the academy, this was all motivated by the California Master plan for Higher Education and the school assumed a more sophisticated and Liberal role. The Bay Area where the campus was located has always had a tradition of rebellion and nonconformity which, when combined with the beat poets and progressive radio stations of the time, helped to cultivate the cultural radicalism that Berkeley was known for. The president of the University, Clark Kerr, attempted to limit the new surge of political activism by issuing what was known as the Kerr Directives. These were somewhat liberalized rule that governed campus political speech and activities. It prohibited a lot of ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 68. Fayol's “Principles” in a University Library In reading through Management Basics for Information Professionals by Evans and Ward, one of the theories of management that stood out to me was the "administrative approach" (2007). Henry Fayol was one of the main proponents of this approach, though there were many others as well. Fayol "divided organizational activities into five major groups" and also identified 14 principles of management and believed that "management is a skill one can learn, rather than a talent received at birth" (Evans & Ward, 2007). In the context of my personal experience I found that it might be interesting to compare my experiences as a student employee in the UC Berkeley library to some of the more applicable aspects of Fayol's principles of management. I ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Another of Fayol's principles had to do with authority and responsibility. In the department of the main stacks, there was a staff librarian who acted as our manager, as well as a group of students that performed supervisory tasks. In my last year or so in the library I joined this group, and was given the task of doing some of the day–to–day tasks that kept our department running. These included opening and closing procedures, keeping statistics of the work done by students, assigning hourly jobs, training, and so on. The important idea in this principle is that "giving orders and being responsible must go together" (Evans & Ward, 2007). I would argue that in our department, while we were responsible for making sure the work was done as well as assigning jobs, if there was a difficult situation the supervisors were able to refer to the staff librarian for support. For example, if one student was chronically underperforming or late, we would notify the librarian. If one considered the group of supervisors plus the librarian who managed us to make up the "management" of the department, then in whole authority and responsibility did go together. I would also say that instead of thinking of student supervisors as not being as responsible as they could be, it would be more plausible to say that the hourly assignment of jobs and other such tasks were ones that were delegated to them by the librarian, because while he was more responsible, there was no way that he could ... • 70. Uc Merced Case Study Higher Education UC Merced (UCM) was opened by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and was established as the 10th UC school. UC Merced was mainly accessible to those that lived in the San Joaquin Valley and the people in Fresno. The school is also very alike to its other establishments such as UCLA and UCI because of the school colors and how they have open enrollment. The location for the campus was chosen in 1995 in Merced County which was where the school received its name and the campus was also adjacent to Lake Yosemite Park. UC Merced was made with a long–term vision because it had started a long–range enrollment plan before the school even had a set location. The way the land was chosen was because it had to have easy accessibility for Merced high school students and the land was to be donated by the Virginia Smith Trust. • 74. Freedom Of Speech Vs Free Speech Rosa Velez Huerta Professor Lesser Geography 31 24 November 2017 Defining to the Smallest Detail the Freedom of Speech Right Introduction to the root of discussion The first amendment in the U.S Constitution of freedom of speech has created controversy. This controversy has been seen on the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, since the freedom of speech movement in the 1960s. In the academic school year 2017–2018 during the fall semester, Free Speech Week took place. This event created protests and conversations around hate speech vs free speech by faculty and staff on campus, and news articles off campus. Research Questions Where do we draw a line between Free Speech and Hate Speech? Why does the first amendment of free speech come at a cost with hate speech? What really are the speakers, who were invited for free speech, arguing in the media and in legal terms? Lastly, whether UC Berkeley students who participated in the protests to cancel the speaker events, violated Milo Yiannopoulos and others freedom of speech. My main question is how can free speech be articulated and expressed without other people taking offense and diminish hate speech. First Amendment Definition The First Amendment states, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a ...
