Crime Vs Deviant Behavior
If you're reading this you probably know what crime is. However have you ever really thought about
what it is? According to Webster, crime is, "an action or omission that constitutes an offense that
may be prosecuted by the state and is punishable by law." If something that is bad, isn't illegal, is it
still a crime? Many people would say yes. Although that could in fact be categorized as deviant
behavior. Webster says that deviant behavior or deviance is, " a behavior that does not conform to
social norms and values." In this paragraph and the following ones you will be informed of the
similarities and differences in crime and deviant behavior. Crime is frowned upon by many people
not only in our nation, but the whole world. We have enforcements

Deviant Behavior In Sports
According to Encyclopedia.com (1968), "deviant behavior is behavior that violates the normative
rules, understandings, or expectations of social systems". In the article Interpretations and
Explanations of Deviance Among College Athletes: A Case Study (1994), Snyder provides "cross–
tabulations and correlational analyses of athletic participation and some measure of delinquency"
(Snyder, 1994, p. 232). Society faces several challenges when dealing with "these types of people"
in society. First, they do not fit the stereotype of what one thinks when they hear deviant behavior.
The article points out that playing sports helps individuals stay out of trouble. It is also thought that
their sports training helps to reduce deviant behavior

Question Number #3: Examine the three premises of the labeling theory.
There was a huge influence of the sociological approach to deviance that was introduced by a group
of researchers in teh 1960s. That influence was known as labeling theory. As the years gone by, the
word labeling grew more into sociology as the symbolic interactionism. The approach had three
premises of the labeling theory that will be discussed. Our society had came up with a control
system of deviance that appears to be humane and scientific than more forms of control that is
torture and public execution. As a popular quote used, "Knowledge is power" that it is greater than
anything in this world (Goode, 2011).
The three principles that form a core of symbolic interactionism are: meaning, interaction, and
interpretation. The labeling theory is to show to people that human beings are not robotic, but
normal people and we have to make decisions that will affect us in the world. In the 1930s, there
were a group of young boys who were engaging in small criminal acts. The boys didn't see any harm
in these acts. When the police were involved, had mentioned to the boys if they continue these
ruthless acts then that will result in more of a serious punishment; reform school. If the boys

It means by intimidating others. It is the secondary deviation when the individual who enacts this
behavior created by social reactions. The individual will have to learn how to deal with and manage
those reactions in certain ways (Goode, 2011). It is stated in the text that, all behavior, deviance
included is an interactional product, and by understanding how the properties and impact are
defined. It is more of a understanding and reasoning. The interaction is between one or more people

1. What are the consequences of labeling? 2. Being labeled because for your actions did it affect
your personal life? 3. The activity you partaked in do you consider it to be deviant? 4. Do you
consider yourself to be deviant? If so why or why not? Everyone in today's society has participated
in forms of deviant behavior whether they're aware of it or not. Deviant behavior refers to violations
of social norms. Norms are behavioral codes or prescriptions that guide people into actions and self–
presentations conforming to social acceptability. American sociologists, William Sumner (1907)
formed three types of norms: folkways, mores, and laws. The behavior I partaken in is considered to
be Mores. Mores is based on norms that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Labeling theory is based on social deviations which allow others to classify someone based on their
actions or behavioral characteristics. Labeling theory explains why a person's behavior clashes with
social norms within their society. Howard S. Becker states that "labeling theory advances the
relativistic perspective on defining deviance." Howard S. Becker argued "that the essence of
deviance is not contained by individuals but how other people around them respond to their
actions." Depending on what type of behavior is pursued Becker believes that each behavioral act is
perceived different under certain conditions conditions. Becker believes the root of deviance in
corresponds to people rather than the act itself, and the chain of events that is released once people
been labeled acts. Labeling someone can taint their name, self–image, social participation, and ruin
their character because now everyone has formed an opinion about someone they barely know,
make jokes, bully them. Labeling a person because of their sexual experiences are perceived more
as a complex target to start an altercation all because they made a choice to sleep with the same sex.

Deviant Behavior Theories
ABSTRACT
The question still remains as to the correlation between behavioral variables such as drugs, gang
violence, unstableness of families, etc. and how they are important tools when explaining deviant
behavior. These tools are often developed into theories in order to attempt an explanation and
prevent initial and/or future deviant behavior in juveniles. All causation theories will be explained
through the content of this research paper because no single theory is sufficient in trying to explain
why juvenile delinquent behavior exists. However, this paper will significantly highlight on the
psychological theories. Next, certain treatment and prevention interventions will be addressed as it
relates to the attempts of controlling delinquency. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
As such delinquency prevention programs often are designed towards early interventions with at–
risk youths. Many attempts are implemented by public agencies and professionals to intervene by
way of early training and educational programs within the public school systems as well as
community intervention programs. OJJDP offers a Model Programs Guide which is a database of
evidence–based programs that provide strategies for delinquency prevention and intervention. The
categories of prevention and intervention include: immediate and intermediate sanctions, residential
and reentry. The model measures risk and protective factors in the five areas of community, family,
school, peers, and the individual and as such ascertains which programs are best according to the
needs of the delinquent youth (Champion, Merlo and Benekos, 2013). Additionally, the Blueprints

Ethical Behavior, Deviant Workplace Behavior
I have worked in municipal for the majority of my career. I worked as a consultant in the private
sector for almost five years before accepting another position in city government in another state.
My career exposed me to ethical behavior, both good and bad, in the workplace, I also was able to
view firsthand, deviant workplace behavior. My experience with both concepts came during my
previous career in city government. After thirty years in city government, I had the misfortune to
have my career be manipulated by the unethical behavior by an executive director in conjunction
with deviant workplace behavior by my subordinates.
Ethical Behavior
As stated in the textbook, managers "...need to create an ethically healthy climate for his or her
employees..."(Robbins & Judge p.26) This should have been part of the covenantal agreement,
between myself and my executive director, as explained by Professor Fischer in the week 2
presentation. This would have ensured equity and fair treatment between myself, my employees and
executive management. The executive director who had oversight of my department had a divide
and conquer mentality that kept departmental directors at odds with those under their supervision.
Despite organizational rules, He chose make his own rules as they applied to organizational
employees and vendors with permits to operate on public property. I followed all stated
organizational rules in regards to employee behavior in the workplace to

Becker criticizes other theories of deviance for accepting the existence of deviance and by doing so,
accept the values of the majority within the social group. According to Becker, studying the act of
the individual is unimportant because deviance is simply rule breaking behavior that is labeled
deviant by persons in positions of power. The rule breaking behavior is constant; the labeling of the
behavior varies. Becker describes rules as the reflection of certain social norms held by the majority
of a society, whether formal or informal. Enforced rules, the focus of Becker's approach, are applied
differentially and usually facilitate certain favorable consequences for those who apply the label. In
short, members of the rule–making society may label rule breaking behavior deviant depending on
the degree of reaction over time. (FSU, n.d.) Becker views those people that are likely to engage in
rule breaking behavior as essentially different than members of the rule–making or rule–abiding
society. Those persons who are prone to rule–breaking behavior see themselves as morally at odds
with those members of the rule–abiding society. Becker uses the term "outsider" to describe a
labeled rule–breaker or deviant that accepts the label attached to them and view

Gang Deviant Behavior
America's cities have experienced a substantial increase of gang membership among the youth
living in impoverished communities throughout the last thirty years. Prior to 1990, many individuals
associated gang activity with specific communities, but as youth gang violence was drastically
increased across the United States' inner cities, the public's perception of this emerging social issue
shifted. Due to the rapid rise of gang violence and the rise of youth membership, delinquent
behavior by youths began to receive a substantial amount of academic and media attention. Gangs
have been perceived by the media as groups of individuals who congregate regularly to commit
crimes to profit their organizations. In 1973, 17 percent of the estimated ... Show more content on

Tattoos And Deviant Behavior
With the development of internet and the progress of time, more and more deviant behavior has
come into people's eyes, for example, transsexual people, some kinds of man likes to wear women's
clothing and some deviant people like self–mutilation and so on. These things seem like crazy and
ridiculous, and there are a lot of more deviant things happened in the world. I want to talk about the
kind of deviant that is people with tattoos. Getting a tattoo has become more and more popular these
years for example, some young want to have their lover's name or some words they like print on
their bodies. And more serious thing is, there is a kind of people want to get tattoos on their whole
body like from their heads to feet. Not everyone like getting ... Show more content on

The tattoos were a signal to identify people who is stigma. "In Western society, tattoos have
historically signified deviance and those who were tattooed were often stigmatized as a
result(Gretchen 670)." "Extant research examines the nature of stigma and identifies a number of
stigma management strategies adopted by people with tattoos (Gretchen 670)." And the same thing
also happened in ancient China. Tattoos is made for those people who are against the laws and the
emperor would put some words that can reminds the events on their faces to shame them as a
punishment. If others see the tattoos on their faces, they would know that they broke the rules and
try to be careful not to get the ugly tattoo like them. So, in the past, tattoos are for those sinners or
criminals. This is one of the reason why some people dislike tattoos. But later, people start use
tattoos to decorate themselves. Women would choose a flower on their backs or legs and men would
choose a dragon or tiger on their arms or backs to show their power. In recent years, people abandon
the traditional ones and use more creative ones instead. But the fact that tattoos are made for
criminals and sinners cannot be changed. Getting a tattoo is not a thing that normal people should

Deviance is a functional element of society because it adjusts people to social change. It is as if
though deviance is automatically transmitted to others. For example when violating rules such as not
using a car seat, forgetting to put on the seat belt, or driving above speed limit. We get used to these
violations because we see them in our daily basis. Deviant acts start to become more acceptable to
society and that's how these things don't seem unusual anymore to the public. It is deviant behavior
that shows us what is right from wrong and determines who we choose to be. Something that is still
considered to be unacceptable or criminal is human trafficking. Human trafficking in many cases
involves violence, exploitation, and sexual assault.

Theoretical Approaches To Deviant Behavior
Deviance can be defined as the transgression of social norms. Deviant behavior may not always be
criminal behavior. It can be as minor as farting or picking your nose in public to as serious as
vandalizing someone's property or murder. Societal expectations provide orderliness that when
society finds an act unacceptable or offensive, you would be considered a deviant. Power plays a big
role in the construction of a deviant behavior. Power can manipulate the individual and society and
how they view deviance. The following discussions apply three sociological theoretical approaches
to deviance based on the Fifth Edition Social Problems book. Deviance can be looked at from
conflict theorist perspective. According to the conflict perspective, deviance is a social creation and
the power in society defines what is normal and what is not. Power can manipulate others. In
relation to the Unites States society, a deviant behavior like abortion, shooting innocent and
unarmed people, and child abuse is seen as a deviant behavior. These acts are punishable by the law.
Conflict theorists draw attention to power differences, such as class conflict. The powerful have the
ability to change norms, then wealth and status comes into conflict with the individual. The legal
rights of the poor might be ignored, while the middle class side with the elites rather than the poor.
The upper class in our society is the social class composed of the wealthiest members of society,
who also have the greatest political power. In our society people frown upon the usage or selling
illicit drugs while getting hallucinogenic drugs or narcotic prescription drugs from a doctor is
considered acceptable. Politicians, set the policies on what drugs should be legal and which should
not in order to "minimize harm" to people here and abroad. In fact, many legal drugs cause serious
harm, including death. To secure the these norms, professional control plays a huge role in who gets
what and their solutions are dominant. Deviance can also be looked at from the Symbolic
Interactionist perspective. The symbolic interaction, labeling theory concerns the meanings people
derive from one another's labels, symbols, actions, and reactions. This theory holds that

The Behavior Of Deviant Behavior
Next, Hirschi explains commitment. Commitment may be hard for a person with deviant behavior.
If you commit to want to do well you may succeed. But if you do not commit to anything then you
may be involved in delinquency. Reason for this is that you do not have anything to lose. When you
really do not have much to lose in life, then you tend to have a negative outlook on life.
Commitment involves the time, energy and effort. For example, commitment on getting a great
education involves putting your all, giving energy to anything that needs to be done for school and
showing that you care by never being late for classes. But if an individual does not care about there
future they are more likely to be involved in deviant behavior. Individuals who drink and engage in
deviant behavior are more likely to fail in school; kids who fail in school are more likely to later
drink and engage in deviant behavior. But a individual who commits to want to do good in the future
who always bye pass the negative features in life. They would only commit to the right people. And
once you commit to sometime and never give up deviant behavior would never play a role in your
world, because you wouldn't give up what you always worked hard for. If a person chooses not to
commit to anything, then they will have nothing to lose. Due to the lack of loss, a person is willing
to commit illegal acts. Involvement is the third of the four elements in the social bond. When an
individual is involved in many

Positivist Perspective Of Deviant Behavior
I would start by explaining the positivist perspective of a deviant individuals and how their behavior
can be determined by three assumptions (absolutism, objectivism, and determinism), in which are
based on natural sciences. Consequently, a person who engages in the sex work environment is
considered deviant because, based on this perspective, the individual has certain psychological or
biological characteristics or traits that make him/her different and intrinsically real (absolutism
assumption) rather than a conventional one. Those psychological or biological traits are believed to
be inherited; thus, if one of your parents was a sex worker, if you born in an environment in which
sex is exchanged for money or any other situation in which

Deviant behavior is a behavior that violates the norms. It is a behavior that breaches the social
norms. Deviant behavior is a behavior that does not conform to social norms and values. A deviant
behavior elicits negative response. In my opinion all crimes are not deviant behavior and all deviant
behavior is not a crime. Picking of the nose in public and licking of the ground is an example of
deviant behavior since it violates the normative rules, understanding, or expectations of social
systems. However picking of the nose and licking of the ground is not criminal behavior. Anyone
doing those actions is looked down upon because they are violating the social norms. In many
cultures picking of the nose is considered disgusting and licking of

Deviant Behavior Analysis
I am going to use a Professional Journal to explain an internationalist perspective and a focus on
Ch.6 on Deviance. The journal main focus is to explain how parents influence deviant behavior
among teens , it also an analysis their family life, community and peers. In the research, Carlson
uses enlarging crime rates to the rise in secure detention facilities, with juvenile crime increasing.
He uses three factors that have been found with the ability to aid in decreasing these rates. The
factors are what has been recently explain, the teens family, community, and peers, with an overall
factor of parenting. Carlson remarks how parents influence the deviant behavior in their children
through their parent techniques and the family structure. He argues that without effective monitoring
and support of a child and consistent punishments that are vital to rising child, teens are more likely
to turn to deviant behavior. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
If the family structure is broken, teens face low level of parental attachment and supervision, as
single–parent living environments also reduce social control thus leading to deviance in teens. In the
community aspect, parents should teach values to their children that are accepted in school. If these
values are not taught, a teens school bond is broken and cause their academic performance to suffer.
If there are no strong bonds that the teen has for his school life, he or she will most likely associate
with other deviant peers. Deviant friends pressure teens to continue to partake in deviant actions.
Overall, Carlson tries show that the point is that when a child has a weak bond with their parents or
the community, their self–control is decreased and social disorganization

Examples Of Deviant Behavior
Jesus Christ was crucified with two robbers; the two robbers were both suffered for crimes that they
had committed. Before they were all reviled Him but one of them changed his mind and rebuked his
friend for his irreverence. He then asked the Lord to remember him when the Lord comes into His
kingdom, which is when He came back and set up His kingdom on earth. Jesus rewarded the thief
for his faith by promising him that He will be with him in paradise the very same day (Luke 23:39–
43 NKJV).
This shows us that if a person comes to Jesus wholeheartedly, his deviant behavior will change.
Jesus Christ will not come back and teach the Word of God, it is our duty as pastors to go and
preach the Word of God. Paul charged Timothy to preach the word with a sense of urgency, availing
himself of every opportunity (2 Tim. 4:2 NKJV). We are also being charged to go and convince, ...

Carter added that even the released prisoners who are convicted, if they involved with local

We should also love those people with deviant behavior; we are failing to win them to Christ
because of pride. We are the ambassadors of God, so we have to do what Christ did while He was
here on earth. Ad Stetzer (2011) said Jesus actively engaged the people of His culture, even those
considered sexually immoral; the sinful woman (Luke 7:36–50); woman at the well (John 4:13–26);
woman that was caught in adultery (John 8:3–11). He did not care about what the Pharisees said, His

Both wealthy and powerful people often take part in deviant behavior. These wealthy or powerful
people are in a lot of ways similar to the average people in the fact that people are all the same
wealthy or not. Most people have similar motives in life. Not everyone is the same yet different
classes of people share many similarities. One theory called the social conflict theory stated by,
(Karl Marx) explains that people of wealth and people in power are often looked upon by others.
These people can set examples for many others to see and follow. Although there is no class system

These wealthy people are often also greedy. It seems as though these wealthy people may be in
some ways addicted to the wealth. They always seem to want more and continue to be more
wealthy. Wealthy people in today's society seem to be able to get away with more. There are often
payouts made to cover up and forgive the wealthy person of their poor choices. In the politician
field, specifically congressmen, there have been crimes that have gotten these workers into trouble.
The decisions made by these politicians are deviant behaviors that we would not expect of them yet
happen more often than we think. Throughout the years many charges have been brought upon
congressman, 14 have been placed under arrest for drug related charges, 8 have been arrested for
shop lifting, 7 have been arrested for fraud, 29 arrested for spousal abuse. The list continues on. In
1998, 84 congressmen were stopped for drunk driving yet were released after claiming
congressional immunity. In order to reduce or eliminate these behaviors, there needs to be better
action taken against these types of people. We can not allow them to get away with crimes because
they are powerful or wealthy. The last example I had given about drunk driving being allowed by
these people is not acceptable. These people need to be put in the spotlight and charged for crimes
accordingly. If this was to happen the next generation of these types of people would realize that
they should not try these deviant behaviors because they will not be

Deviant Behavior
Deviant behavior refers to behavior that does not conform to norms, does not meet the expectations
of a group of a society as a whole. After birth, children begin to experience situations with others.
They are taught what he or she should and should not do, what is good or bad and what is right or
wrong. Learning habits that conform to the customs and traditions of the groups into which the child
is born develops a system of values. These values provide justification and motivation or for
wanting to refrain from behavior that is disapproved.
After reading this, one can see how a behavior is considered deviant, but the question is, "Why is a

These common stereotypes about drug users in turn helped create new societal norms. Drug use
leads society to believe only certain (bad) people involve themselves with drugs and the only to way
to handle this problem is to make the public aware. Hence, creating new laws and stricter
enforcement only helps to inform the public of how serious a problem drug use is and in turn, is
labeled as deviant behavior.
Now knowing why society believes illicit drug use is considered a deviant act, what type of theories
can be best used to evaluate them? First, one has to know a brief explanation of each theory and the
reasoning behind each theory. These theories care designed to address a problem area and gain
insight into why these problems exist.
There are many different types of theories, but this paper will focus on three. The first being the
labeling theory. The second being the conflict theory and the last being the learning theory. All these
theories will be explained along with what part of each theory will be evaluated. The labeling theory
starts off with the basic assumption that deviance is relative too social or group norms and not
inherently characteristic of certain human acts or people. Becker states, "Social groups create
deviance by making the rules whose infraction constitutes deviance. Deviance is not a quality of the
act the person commits, but rather a consequence of the application by others of rules and

Deviant Behavior Sociology
There are many avenues to studying human interactions associated with deviant behavior through
sociology, but what exactly defines "deviant behavior"? There is no one definition that truly
solidifies what deviance is. Society plays a significant role in critiquing deviant behavior as it differs
from each individual's cultural beliefs. Sociologists continue to research human interaction/deviant
behaviors by analyzing statistics, languages and ethnicity. There are different approaches in which
sociologists observe society's interactions either through a: positivist, relativist, and critical
conception perspective. Although all three do have similarities, there perspectives on human
behavior are diverse. Sociologists may analyze the same information, ... Show more content on

"Critical conception argues that the normative understanding of deviance is established by those in
power to maintain and enhance their power" (Inderbitzin, Bates, & Gainey, 2016, pp. 3–4). "This
conception focuses on our society as a whole, and that certain groups are favored over others unlike
the previous conceptions that focus on individual types of deviance" (Inderbitzin, Bates, & Gainey,
2016, pp. 3–5). When viewing the high school dropout tread, the lower social class through a critical
conception aspect, there focus is to create a solution for the teens to encouraging graduating high
school. While a positivist and relativist only study the cause of incident, a critical sociologist studies
the causes in hope to create a resolution. For a critical aspect the question is not why teens aren't
graduating, but instead how can society as a whole convince high schoolers belonging to a lower
social class the importance of their education. Regardless, of how society is viewed we all have

Deviant Behavior And Its Effects On Society
These past 8 weeks has totally contribute to my understanding of deviant behavior, but at the same
time, it changes some of my views toward the word 'deviant' as well. Deviance, as mentioned in my
first discussion post, varies from people to people, time to time, culture to culture and more. There is
no one definite point to define what behavior is deviant and what is not. Besides that, how do we
classify one particular action as deviant? Do we classify it because it harms someone? What if that
action somehow benefit someone but creates some extent of harm to another person? Throughout
this 8 weeks of discussion and short paper, I realized there is no universally accepted deviant
behavior like what I discussed in my first discussion post. I used to believe universally accepted
deviant behavior is a behavior that inflicts harm on other people such as homicide. I begin to
realized that maybe it creates certain extent of harm on one person but brings certain extent of
benefit to another person. For instance, there were drugs that were illegalized because it cause
addiction to another person and therefore, it is called deviance if the person is using that illegal
drugs. On another hand, those illegal drugs might have medicinal properties that helps in certain
sickness. Due to it being deviant, the drugs cannot be prescribed as medicine and this in a way, will
cause harm for people who needs to medicine to recover from the sickness. Now, how do we define

Deviant Behavior In Schools
As young juveniles grow up thinking that they don't need anybody but themselves. Kids often times
won't listen to anyone or pay attention to teachers. Many juveniles have the attitude to fear no one.
Sometimes these kids become bullies and are rude to other students. Intentionally starting conflict
with other students with that don't care attitude. Many troubled students feel they have nothing to
lose when there aren't any role models around to encourage them. This behavior often times
continues and a reputation is built "troublemaker". There mind starts to believe or feel that anybody
who blocks or interferes with this become a target. For example, if a teacher won't allow this
behavior of disrupting the class the teacher becomes a target. The student may become the loudest
student or have the attitude I'll take control of the class. When the mindset is made up the behavior
problem will get worse and more outburst will follow. Deviant behavior by students for instance
cheating, speaking rudely to teachers, disregarding homework, using cell phones in class, engaging

Not All Deviant Behavior Is Crime
All people are deviant. But how can anyone make such a claim? There are plenty of good people in
this world, from saints to charities, there are progressive movements for the common good of
humanity. The problem lies in that humanity in itself is naturally flawed with innate tendencies to
stray away from what is right and give into temptation for what is wrong. Such wrongful acts are
restricted by protective laws, and any infraction of these laws is identified as a crime. If a person
commits a crime, they are departing from the social standards of laws and entering into the realm of
deviance. However, if one demonstrates deviant behavior from social norms rather than concrete
laws, then one can argue that not all deviant behavior is crime.

Theories Of Deviant Behavior
While many theories are dedicated to illustrate why people learn or decide to engage in deviant
behavior, Erich Goode (2014) explains that there are two theories who embarked in the quest of
explaining the opposite. In relation to the use of illegal drugs as a deviant behavior, the social
learning theory, the control theory, and the self–control theory, attempt to explain why people do not
deviate from the norms, presenting different points of view that in many times even oppose with
other theories, such as the social learning theory. The proponents of the control theory state that
people engage in deviant behavior because they do not have a bond or connection with our social
institutions (Goode, 2014). In this case, Goode (2014) remarks ... Show more content on

do not include: the subjective perceptions of people. However, it seems that, in his article about
using marihuana, Becker (1953), instead, made an effort to explain this phenomena. Becker (1953)

that the use of marihuana for pleasure can only be present in those who learn by themselves or with

Rap Music Genres and Deviant Behaviors in French–Canadian Adolescents Article Review In 2004,
researchers Dave Miranda and Michael Claes conducted a study to see a variety of effects music had
on the French Canadian Youth. They took a sample of 348 high school French–Canadian students,
most of which were bilingual in order to study if music has any correlation towards deviant actions.
Of those students, 185 were female while 163 students were male. The researchers wanted to test
four types of rap music genres, including American rap, gangsta/hard core rap, hip hop/soul, and
French rap. They used these genres and compared it to five types of survey reported deviant
behaviors comprising of, violence, theft, street gang involvement, mild drug ... Show more content

For French rap music being connected with Deviant behavior, they stated it was possible because of
an increased accessibility of the music which contained violent and radical lyrics. For the hip
hop/soul musical sub group, they based it on being less deviant possibility because the lyrics are
generally lighter and overall more positive and uplifting with a meaningful message. When they
were controlling whether or not there was violent media presented, the correlational effect of rap
music and deviancy lowered, which they proposed was a possibility due to the fact that rap music
has a strong cultural identity to the youth within the

The Origin Of Criminal Behavior And / Or Deviant Behavior
There are numerous theories on how to explain the origin of criminal behavior and/or deviant
behavior, one of those theories is called Strain Theory. Robert Merton was the sociologist that
developed strain theory in 1949 (revised in 1968). Robert Merton based his theory on the fact that
all people want to achieve the American dream of economic status. He believed that environmental
factors caused a strain on a person's ability to achieve the American dream of economic success and
depending on what the environmental factors are, people reacted differently to this strain (Kapelos–
Peters). This theory describes the different types of ways people achieve this goal in relation to
social adaptation. Merton's theory has five modes of adaptation which are: conformity, innovation,
ritualism, retreatism and rebellion. Robert Merton was among the few sociologists that believed that
individual causes such as environmental and biological defects could have potentially contributed to
the deviant behavior in society. The sociologist Robert Merton developed the theory called Strain
Theory based on social adaptations. He believed that environmental and biological factors
contributed to the social deviance. In his theory he explains how deviance may not be a free will,
like most sociologist before him thought to be. His inspiration to cultivate the strain theory came
from the theory on anomie that was established by Emile Durkheim ( (Kapelos–Peters). Anomie
refers to a condition or malaise

I'm on my way to Sociology class one day this semester, my Tuesday and Thursday 2:00pm session
with Gloria Clay. I find myself in a bit of a rush this afternoon. Slept in late, had a lot of errands to
run, lost track of time. At least I'm grateful that the weather is nice and the traffic is sparse today, but
this doesn't eliminate the fact that I'm not going to be on time for class. I am trying to stay relaxed in
this situation but little do you know, I really hate running late for everything. It's about time my lead
foot kicks in–– I find myself exceeding the speed limit. I actually get halfway to school when I
notice the sporadic movement of blue and red lights in my rear view mirror. So here I am, hanging

I have found another trigger for my deviant behavior: peer pressure. Peer influence has emerged
over the last fifty years to be the chief source of values and behavioral influence in adolescence,
replacing the influence of adults. Although the level of deviance from peer group to peer group
varies, the negative actions of one member in a group will increase the probability of other members
taking part in similar behaviors. Affiliation with deviant peers predicts delinquent behavior more
strongly than community, school, or family. Peer pressure is a major contributor to the deviant
behavior of alcohol and drug use in young members of our society. Dealing with this peer pressure
is a fact that I, and most teenagers must sometimes face. As I have matured, I have come across
challenging decisions, and peer pressure plays a factor when people my own age try to influence my
decisions. Peer pressure is a major excuse as to why teens experiment with drinking, and the use of
alcohol by underage adolescents is deviant behavior. This use goes against the norms of society and
its effects can be extremely negative. I vividly remember my first real interaction with peer pressure
and alcohol. I was in high school, not much older than fifteen years old. My friends were over and
my mom wasn't home that night. I can't remember if it was my idea or not, but my friends were
doing anything but opposing the idea of busting into my mom's booze supply. I collapsed, gave in,

Is Homosexuality a Deviant Behavior?
I knew that I needed to pick something that would be controversial that my reader would be
interested. The topic of homosexuality as a deviant behavior struck my attention. It is a topic of
interest to me because I seen how things have changed over time. I found it to be interesting because
there is a lot of different theories and studies against the homosexual community. Homosexuality
connection can be the result of mental distress, genes and hormone, and lastly the environment
where the person is developed. I chose to write about homosexuality and seek to answer the deviant
behaviors in America. Homosexuality is a very serious matter that it is considered deviant amongst a
huge population of Americans. A deviant act is not always considered to be criminal, but a criminal
act can be considered deviant behavior. The fact is that the act of Homosexuality went from illegal
to legal very quickly among the American community. I want to research the three major theories of
homosexuality. The three major theories to homosexuality are the biological theory, the psychiatric
theory, and the sociological theory. I will examine if there is a direct correlation between any of
these three theories. I want to find out the impact of the bible in homosexuality. And Lastly I want to
talk about how the society has grown from this deviant behavior. The Question that I will answer in
my research paper is: Is homosexuality a deviant behavior? The truth is homosexuality is no

Being A Deviant Behavior, Engaging The Homosexual Subculture
The origins of this article are about the « tearooms » activities, which are considered to be a deviant
behavior, engaging the homosexuals in deviant activity It 's officially considered that there is no one
known more suitable place for those activities than the restrooms. Those restrooms gain a permanent
name of « tearooms », defines this way in the language of the homosexual subculture, are attractive
for them as emplacements for sexual "one shot" encounters without any obligations and
consequence to be known in their real life. I would add, that those activities put the participants in a
kind of the double life, as one is the official and an other one, they try to deny the existence. Purpose
and Need for Study Purely the ends of this study, has been chosen exclusively by the author.
According to my thoughts, author chose the sexual activities in the tearooms, describing it as a form
of social behavior to provide a valuable answer to the numerous arrests of homosexuals in the
country. Actually, the biggest number of the homo arrests related to the tearooms. Author
consequently would like to answer to his own question, through the sociological investigation. He
also give other reason of importance of this study, by explaining that in US the decision on what
topic or field will be study are decided by the social control forces, not by the criminologist.

Deviant Behavior And Deviant Behaviour Essay
Theories of deviant behavior Deviant behavior is described as acts or individual characters that are
contrary to social norms. These behaviors are usually against set rule or authority laws. Individuals
expressing deviant behavior violate norms and rules other members of the society and are
accustomed to or abide by. Deviant behavior is found to undergone change over time in the history
of human civilization. Ability to predict another person's behavior makes social life comfortable and
bearable. However, it is usually hard to predict people behavior since different individuals express
their character traits differently since they are influenced by verse sociological and social–
psychological factors. Deviant characters are usually a source of irritation, suspicion, negative
emotions, and even fear in a society. Sociologists have come up with theories to explain the deviant
behavior. This section will compare and contract three theories that attempt to explain deviant
behavior in humans (McCaghy et al. 2008). Social integration as a theory focuses on how
individuals are affected by groups in which they are involved in.Durkheim a French sociologist
wrote on social integration in 1895 indicating that deviance was an importance of society and it
formed the basis for society organization and functions. The argument in this theory was based on
two related processes. The first was the social integration which illustrates the extent to which
members of a society were

Deviant Behavior Report
During this experiment the object was to create an act which was deviant, and observe the reactions
of myself and others. The word Deviant means "that it differs from the norm or standard in some
significant way". For the experiment I conducted I acquired a jar of mayonnaise. Then I emptied the
mayonnaise out of the jar and filled the jar with white pudding. The point of doing this was to make
the white pudding in the jar look like it was mayonnaise. When I was done making the fake
mayonnaise I was ready to conduct my experiment.
The experiment was to vigorously eat the fake mayonnaise straight out of the jar with a spoon in
front of people and observe how they react. This is not necessarily a deviant behavior because I was
eating pudding, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Well first my behavior was considerably deviant. It was proved by the reactions of others, and as
most people can agree that eating mayonnaise very fast out of a jar is not normal. By the definition
of deviant, it should be considered deviant because it differs from the norm in a significant way. I
would also consider this behavior as dangerous. This is because eating mayonnaise straight out of
the jar in quantity's I was eating is very unhealthy and could cause many health issues if done
regularly. It should be considered dysfunctional because it was effecting the restaurant I was in. this
is because they didn't get business while I was satisfied with the fake mayonnaise. Finally I don't
think that eating mayonnaise fits into the distress category. The definition of distress is "extreme
anxiety, sorrow, or pain." And I don't see how eating mayonnaise causes this. Moreover, I believe
that something such as anxiety, sorrow, or pain can drive someone to eat mayonnaise in large
quantities, and vigorously. As it states in the textbook "should we conclude, then, that feelings of
distress must always be present before a person's functioning can be considered abnormal? Not
necessarily." This leads me to conclude that we should still classify that behavior as abnormal. By
definition of abnormal it is understandable. The definition of abnormal is "deviating from what is
normal or usual, typically in a way that is undesirable or worrying." This behavior is undoubtedly
not usual, and is defiantly undesirable, or

Deviant Behavior: Absolutist And Relativist Perspective
Deviant behavior is not only difficult to define; it is also challenging to form a consensus as to what
constitutes deviant behavior. An attempt to google deviant behavior draws a multitude of responses,
each with its own subtle nuances. A textbook from a previous sociology class defines deviance as
"any behavior, belief, or condition that violates significant social norms in the society or group in
which it occurs" (Kendall, 2015, p. 164). Is it any wonder then that this lack of agreement causes
different perspectives to form? Two perspectives that are mentioned in Hills' article include the
absolutist and the relativist perspectives.
The absolutist perspective, which, according to Hills' article is shared by the largest and most
influential segments of the public, contends that a large portion of the population agrees on the basic
goals that people should pursue. According to this theory the population should be working towards
conforming to the norm as determined by society rather than the individualism ... Show more

I, however, find myself aligning with the relativist perspective on deviant behavior. When
attempting to define a behavior in a society, be it a deviant behavior or not, any definition that
refuses to acknowledge outlying behaviors seems destined to be disproven. The absolutist
perspective fails to take into account that social values tend to fluctuate, causing societal norms to
evolve over time. As the closing statement of the article suggests, a growing number of social
scientists and militant activists are beginning to have doubts about the base principles that promote
the absolutist perspective, and through this I feel that a subtle shift in popularity away from this
perspective may lead to an increase in the popularity of the relativist

How can Drivers Handle Troublesome Students The prime focus of a good school bus driver is to
transport students safely to and from school. This depends partly on students' behavior inside the
school bus. If the students are annoying and chaotic, drivers may not be able to concentrate on the
road and hence the safety of transportation will be at stake.
Types of Deviant Behavior
Some of the deviant behaviors one can find among students include usage of foul or inappropriate
language, verbal harrassment, running here and there while the bus is moving, stealing objects of
other students, displaying violent behavior to fellow mates etc. Apart from these behaviors, there are
children who become extremely dangerous if left unmonitored. Hence drivers should monitor and

When they ignore, students gets more and more motivated to exhibit such villainous behavior. Never
give warning more than two times before calling a child's parents. One should always remember the
fact that students judge a driver's authority based on their first response to rule violations. Students
act according to driver's response to rule violation and thus behave based on their expectation.
Displaying strong character
A school bus driver should have a strong character for managing a school bus effectively. If they
permit a student to bully their fellow mates, it will completely ruin their career as a driver. Students
may sometimes take this driver's weakness as granted to do more bullying. Hence drivers should
emphasize their control on students.
Create a good rapport
Drivers must be able to interact with students effectively, so that they can have better control over
the bus. Students will obey you only when they think that drivers are actually concerned about their
well being.

leadership style to avoid deviant behavior among subordinates?
Deviant is defined "differing from a norm or from the accepted standards of society. It can be used
to describe a person whose behavior and attitudes differ from what is considered to be normal or
from acceptable social and moral standards. (Berube; 1982, 1985)
He provided personal loans to key senior executives for that purpose. One former senior manager
told the Financial Times that Ebbers offered $80,000 to $300,000 loans to as many as 50 top
executives. These loans were not put in writing, but it was understood that they would be repaid.

Deviant Behavior/Tattoos Essay

Beginning from a child we begin to experience different situations and interactions with others. We
start getting taught the difference between right and wrong, what may be considered good and what
is considered bad, and also taught the things we should and should not do. As we grow older we try
to refrain from behavior of which society may disapprove of. Society see's certain types of behavior
as being deviant. First let's begin by explaining what is a deviant behavior? Deviant behavior can be
any behavior that does not conform to what people may consider normal, a behavior that does not
meet with many expectations in society. Societies are both social structure and culture. Robert K

Tattoos are stigmatized as aggressive and deviant because it was once commonly known among "out
group", outlaws, criminals, bikers, prisoners, and etc., (Heywood,Patrick, Smith, Pitts, Richters,
Shelley, (n.d)). People who obtain tattoos are more perceived negatively towards tattooed figures
than that of non–tattooed adults. Women with tattoos are more negatively looked upon than men.
There is a type of control over people with tattoos and employment. Many employers try not to hire
people with tattoos especially as sales representatives. Studies have showed that people with tattoos
that are interested in what is sold would gravitate more towards a sales representative with tattoos.
As a female with tattoos, I can say that I have personally seen the difference in the way that people
may treat me because of my body modifications. Even with body modifications studies may show
that the more tattoos and piercings the more deviant the person. I cannot truly agree with this.
Tattoos in the tattoo wearer's eyes are more of a creative freedom or an art form.

Deviant Behavior Analysis
One current even from the news that I am going to discuss regarding deviant behavior is last week's
shooting of the news crew in Roanoke, Virginia. I chose this for several different reasons. This
happened close to where I live, my husband was one of many Special Agents who responded to this,
and it is something that I am sure most of you all have heard about. When talking about these
deviant acts, shooting and killing two people and then himself, I feel that one theory that explains
this behavior is the extension of the structural and anomie theory, which is known as strain theories.
To be more precise, I feel that this behavior is both the second and third type of strain. The second
strain according to Franzese (2009, p. 43), "occurs

Deviant Behavior : Behavior, Class, And Conformity
The study of deviant behavior is one of the more complex studies of sociology. "Deviants are those
individuals who do not live by the rules that the majority of us follow."(Giddens, A., Duneier, M.,
Appelbaum, R. P., & Carr, D) "Some do so by choice; others are incapable of following the rules
because they lack the resources to do so.(Giddens, A., Duneier, M., Appelbaum, R. P., & Carr, D) In
the reality of our societies, we are all different, and no one society or individual is better than the
next. Nor can our behaviors honestly be classified as better than the next. The common day practices
in society are based on power, class, and conformity. These divisions of society play a major role in
what is normal and what is considered to be deviant behavior. When I was 10 years old, I clearly
remember committing my first deviant act as an adolescent. My brother and I were staying at our
grandparent's house for the summer. Our mother was a single parent who had two children with
minimal help from my grandmother whom lived about an hour away from us. My mother was a full
time college student as well as a full time employee. So growing up, we often spent a lot of time
alone and we never had the things that we wanted, although I must be thankful because we never
went without food, water, and shelter, as well as other necessities. My mother strived hard to
provide for us as well as to better our circumstances but it wasn't easy for her. Since she was always

In organisations of any size (SME's) deviance workplace behaviour can take place and can disrupt
the efforts of managers and the organisations as a whole. Being a leader and a manager you should

Deviant Behavior Essay
Deviant behavior refers to behavior that does not conform to norms, does not meet the expectations
of a group of a society as a whole. After birth, children begin to experience situations with others.
They are taught what he or she should and should not do, what is good or bad and what is right or
wrong. Learning habits that conform to the customs and traditions of the groups into which the child
is born develops a system of values. These values provide justification and motivation or for
wanting to refrain from behavior that is disapproved. After reading this, one can see how a behavior
is considered deviant, but the question is, "Why is a certain type of behavior considered deviant?"
This paper will take a particular deviant ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
This common belief holds that people using drugs necessarily have personal problems and lack
social skills, which then in turn, threatens personal health and morality to societies well being. Also,
medically, reference to elicit drug use is considered drug abuse. This portrays an image that is
unrealistic. It tells society that drugs are a huge problem and that anyone who is associated with
drugs has a problem. These common stereotypes about drug users in turn helped create new societal
norms. Drug use leads society to believe only certain (bad) people involve themselves with drugs
and the only to way to handle this problem is to make the public aware. Hence, creating new laws
and stricter enforcement only helps to inform the public of how serious a problem drug use is and in
turn, is labeled as deviant behavior. Now knowing why society believes illicit drug use is considered
a deviant act, what type of theories can be best used to evaluate them? First, one has to know a brief
explanation of each theory and the reasoning behind each theory. These theories care designed to
address a problem area and gain insight into why these problems exist. There are many different
types of theories, but this paper will focus on three. The first being the labeling theory. The second
being the conflict theory and the last being the learning theory. All these theories will be explained
along with what part of each theory will be evaluated. The labeling

Crime Vs Deviant Behavior

  • 1. Crime Vs Deviant Behavior If you're reading this you probably know what crime is. However have you ever really thought about what it is? According to Webster, crime is, "an action or omission that constitutes an offense that may be prosecuted by the state and is punishable by law." If something that is bad, isn't illegal, is it still a crime? Many people would say yes. Although that could in fact be categorized as deviant behavior. Webster says that deviant behavior or deviance is, " a behavior that does not conform to social norms and values." In this paragraph and the following ones you will be informed of the similarities and differences in crime and deviant behavior. Crime is frowned upon by many people not only in our nation, but the whole world. We have enforcements ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 3. Deviant Behavior In Sports According to Encyclopedia.com (1968), "deviant behavior is behavior that violates the normative rules, understandings, or expectations of social systems". In the article Interpretations and Explanations of Deviance Among College Athletes: A Case Study (1994), Snyder provides "cross– tabulations and correlational analyses of athletic participation and some measure of delinquency" (Snyder, 1994, p. 232). Society faces several challenges when dealing with "these types of people" in society. First, they do not fit the stereotype of what one thinks when they hear deviant behavior. The article points out that playing sports helps individuals stay out of trouble. It is also thought that their sports training helps to reduce deviant behavior ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Bcj565 Deviant Behavior BCJ565 Deviant Behavior Unit #1 Question Number #3: Examine the three premises of the labeling theory. There was a huge influence of the sociological approach to deviance that was introduced by a group of researchers in teh 1960s. That influence was known as labeling theory. As the years gone by, the word labeling grew more into sociology as the symbolic interactionism. The approach had three premises of the labeling theory that will be discussed. Our society had came up with a control system of deviance that appears to be humane and scientific than more forms of control that is torture and public execution. As a popular quote used, "Knowledge is power" that it is greater than anything in this world (Goode, 2011). The three principles that form a core of symbolic interactionism are: meaning, interaction, and interpretation. The labeling theory is to show to people that human beings are not robotic, but normal people and we have to make decisions that will affect us in the world. In the 1930s, there were a group of young boys who were engaging in small criminal acts. The boys didn't see any harm in these acts. When the police were involved, had mentioned to the boys if they continue these ruthless acts then that will result in more of a serious punishment; reform school. The activity you partaked in do you consider it to be deviant? 4. Do you consider yourself to be deviant? If so why or why not? Everyone in today's society has participated in forms of deviant behavior whether they're aware of it or not. Deviant behavior refers to violations of social norms. Norms are behavioral codes or prescriptions that guide people into actions and self– presentations conforming to social acceptability. American sociologists, William Sumner (1907) formed three types of norms: folkways, mores, and laws. The behavior I partaken in is considered to be Mores. Mores is based on norms that ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Labeling theory is based on social deviations which allow others to classify someone based on their actions or behavioral characteristics. Labeling theory explains why a person's behavior clashes with social norms within their society. Howard S. Becker states that "labeling theory advances the relativistic perspective on defining deviance." Howard S. Becker argued "that the essence of deviance is not contained by individuals but how other people around them respond to their actions." Depending on what type of behavior is pursued Becker believes that each behavioral act is perceived different under certain conditions conditions. Becker believes the root of deviance in corresponds to people rather than the act itself, and the chain of events that is released once people been labeled acts. Labeling someone can taint their name, self–image, social participation, and ruin their character because now everyone has formed an opinion about someone they barely know, make jokes, bully them. Labeling a person because of their sexual experiences are perceived more as a complex target to start an altercation all because they made a choice to sleep with the same sex. Deviant Behavior Theories ABSTRACT The question still remains as to the correlation between behavioral variables such as drugs, gang violence, unstableness of families, etc. and how they are important tools when explaining deviant behavior. These tools are often developed into theories in order to attempt an explanation and prevent initial and/or future deviant behavior in juveniles. All causation theories will be explained through the content of this research paper because no single theory is sufficient in trying to explain why juvenile delinquent behavior exists. However, this paper will significantly highlight on the psychological theories. The categories of prevention and intervention include: immediate and intermediate sanctions, residential and reentry. I worked as a consultant in the private sector for almost five years before accepting another position in city government in another state. My career exposed me to ethical behavior, both good and bad, in the workplace, I also was able to view firsthand, deviant workplace behavior. My experience with both concepts came during my previous career in city government. After thirty years in city government, I had the misfortune to have my career be manipulated by the unethical behavior by an executive director in conjunction with deviant workplace behavior by my subordinates. Ethical Behavior As stated in the textbook, managers "...need to create an ethically healthy climate for his or her employees..."(Robbins & Judge p.26) This should have been part of the covenantal agreement, between myself and my executive director, as explained by Professor Fischer in the week 2 presentation. This would have ensured equity and fair treatment between myself, my employees and executive management. The executive director who had oversight of my department had a divide and conquer mentality that kept departmental directors at odds with those under their supervision. Becker criticizes other theories of deviance for accepting the existence of deviance and by doing so, accept the values of the majority within the social group. According to Becker, studying the act of the individual is unimportant because deviance is simply rule breaking behavior that is labeled deviant by persons in positions of power. The rule breaking behavior is constant; the labeling of the behavior varies. Becker describes rules as the reflection of certain social norms held by the majority of a society, whether formal or informal. Enforced rules, the focus of Becker's approach, are applied differentially and usually facilitate certain favorable consequences for those who apply the label. In short, members of the rule–making society may label rule breaking behavior deviant depending on the degree of reaction over time. (FSU, n.d.) Becker views those people that are likely to engage in rule breaking behavior as essentially different than members of the rule–making or rule–abiding society. Those persons who are prone to rule–breaking behavior see themselves as morally at odds with those members of the rule–abiding society. Prior to 1990, many individuals associated gang activity with specific communities, but as youth gang violence was drastically increased across the United States' inner cities, the public's perception of this emerging social issue shifted. Due to the rapid rise of gang violence and the rise of youth membership, delinquent behavior by youths began to receive a substantial amount of academic and media attention. Tattoos And Deviant Behavior With the development of internet and the progress of time, more and more deviant behavior has come into people's eyes, for example, transsexual people, some kinds of man likes to wear women's clothing and some deviant people like self–mutilation and so on. These things seem like crazy and ridiculous, and there are a lot of more deviant things happened in the world. I want to talk about the kind of deviant that is people with tattoos. Getting a tattoo has become more and more popular these years for example, some young want to have their lover's name or some words they like print on their bodies. "In Western society, tattoos have historically signified deviance and those who were tattooed were often stigmatized as a result(Gretchen 670)." "Extant research examines the nature of stigma and identifies a number of stigma management strategies adopted by people with tattoos (Gretchen 670)." And the same thing also happened in ancient China. Tattoos is made for those people who are against the laws and the emperor would put some words that can reminds the events on their faces to shame them as a punishment. If others see the tattoos on their faces, they would know that they broke the rules and try to be careful not to get the ugly tattoo like them. So, in the past, tattoos are for those sinners or criminals. This is one of the reason why some people dislike tattoos. But later, people start use tattoos to decorate themselves. Women would choose a flower on their backs or legs and men would choose a dragon or tiger on their arms or backs to show their power. In recent years, people abandon the traditional ones and use more creative ones instead. But the fact that tattoos are made for criminals and sinners cannot be changed. For example when violating rules such as not using a car seat, forgetting to put on the seat belt, or driving above speed limit. We get used to these violations because we see them in our daily basis. Deviant acts start to become more acceptable to society and that's how these things don't seem unusual anymore to the public. • 21. Theoretical Approaches To Deviant Behavior Deviance can be defined as the transgression of social norms. Deviant behavior may not always be criminal behavior. It can be as minor as farting or picking your nose in public to as serious as vandalizing someone's property or murder. Societal expectations provide orderliness that when society finds an act unacceptable or offensive, you would be considered a deviant. Power plays a big role in the construction of a deviant behavior. Power can manipulate the individual and society and how they view deviance. The following discussions apply three sociological theoretical approaches to deviance based on the Fifth Edition Social Problems book. Deviance can be looked at from conflict theorist perspective. According to the conflict perspective, deviance is a social creation and the power in society defines what is normal and what is not. Power can manipulate others. In relation to the Unites States society, a deviant behavior like abortion, shooting innocent and unarmed people, and child abuse is seen as a deviant behavior. These acts are punishable by the law. Conflict theorists draw attention to power differences, such as class conflict. The powerful have the ability to change norms, then wealth and status comes into conflict with the individual. The legal rights of the poor might be ignored, while the middle class side with the elites rather than the poor. The upper class in our society is the social class composed of the wealthiest members of society, who also have the greatest political power. In our society people frown upon the usage or selling illicit drugs while getting hallucinogenic drugs or narcotic prescription drugs from a doctor is considered acceptable. Politicians, set the policies on what drugs should be legal and which should not in order to "minimize harm" to people here and abroad. In fact, many legal drugs cause serious harm, including death. To secure the these norms, professional control plays a huge role in who gets what and their solutions are dominant. Deviance can also be looked at from the Symbolic Interactionist perspective. The symbolic interaction, labeling theory concerns the meanings people derive from one another's labels, symbols, actions, and reactions. This theory holds that ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 23. The Behavior Of Deviant Behavior Next, Hirschi explains commitment. Commitment may be hard for a person with deviant behavior. If you commit to want to do well you may succeed. But if you do not commit to anything then you may be involved in delinquency. Reason for this is that you do not have anything to lose. When you really do not have much to lose in life, then you tend to have a negative outlook on life. Commitment involves the time, energy and effort. For example, commitment on getting a great education involves putting your all, giving energy to anything that needs to be done for school and showing that you care by never being late for classes. But if an individual does not care about there future they are more likely to be involved in deviant behavior. Individuals who drink and engage in deviant behavior are more likely to fail in school; kids who fail in school are more likely to later drink and engage in deviant behavior. But a individual who commits to want to do good in the future who always bye pass the negative features in life. They would only commit to the right people. And once you commit to sometime and never give up deviant behavior would never play a role in your world, because you wouldn't give up what you always worked hard for. If a person chooses not to commit to anything, then they will have nothing to lose. Due to the lack of loss, a person is willing to commit illegal acts. Involvement is the third of the four elements in the social bond. When an individual is involved in many ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Positivist Perspective Of Deviant Behavior I would start by explaining the positivist perspective of a deviant individuals and how their behavior can be determined by three assumptions (absolutism, objectivism, and determinism), in which are based on natural sciences. Consequently, a person who engages in the sex work environment is considered deviant because, based on this perspective, the individual has certain psychological or biological characteristics or traits that make him/her different and intrinsically real (absolutism assumption) rather than a conventional one. Deviant behavior is a behavior that does not conform to social norms and values. A deviant behavior elicits negative response. In my opinion all crimes are not deviant behavior and all deviant behavior is not a crime. Picking of the nose in public and licking of the ground is an example of deviant behavior since it violates the normative rules, understanding, or expectations of social systems. The factors are what has been recently explain, the teens family, community, and peers, with an overall factor of parenting. • 31. Examples Of Deviant Behavior Jesus Christ was crucified with two robbers; the two robbers were both suffered for crimes that they had committed. Before they were all reviled Him but one of them changed his mind and rebuked his friend for his irreverence. He then asked the Lord to remember him when the Lord comes into His kingdom, which is when He came back and set up His kingdom on earth. Jesus rewarded the thief for his faith by promising him that He will be with him in paradise the very same day (Luke 23:39– 43 NKJV). This shows us that if a person comes to Jesus wholeheartedly, his deviant behavior will change. Jesus Christ will not come back and teach the Word of God, it is our duty as pastors to go and preach the Word of God. Paul charged Timothy to preach the word with a sense of urgency, availing himself of every opportunity (2 Tim. 4:2 NKJV). We are also being charged to go and convince, ... Carter added that even the released prisoners who are convicted, if they involved with local congregation they will no longer commit crime or return to prison. So as pastors we should have programs for visiting prisoners so that we can preach the Word of God even to them We should also love those people with deviant behavior; we are failing to win them to Christ because of pride. We are the ambassadors of God, so we have to do what Christ did while He was here on earth. Ad Stetzer (2011) said Jesus actively engaged the people of His culture, even those considered sexually immoral; the sinful woman (Luke 7:36–50); woman at the well (John 4:13–26); woman that was caught in adultery (John 8:3–11). These wealthy or powerful people are in a lot of ways similar to the average people in the fact that people are all the same wealthy or not. Most people have similar motives in life. Not everyone is the same yet different classes of people share many similarities. One theory called the social conflict theory stated by, (Karl Marx) explains that people of wealth and people in power are often looked upon by others. In the politician field, specifically congressmen, there have been crimes that have gotten these workers into trouble. The decisions made by these politicians are deviant behaviors that we would not expect of them yet happen more often than we think. Throughout the years many charges have been brought upon congressman, 14 have been placed under arrest for drug related charges, 8 have been arrested for shop lifting, 7 have been arrested for fraud, 29 arrested for spousal abuse. The list continues on. In 1998, 84 congressmen were stopped for drunk driving yet were released after claiming congressional immunity. In order to reduce or eliminate these behaviors, there needs to be better action taken against these types of people. We can not allow them to get away with crimes because they are powerful or wealthy. The last example I had given about drunk driving being allowed by these people is not acceptable. After birth, children begin to experience situations with others. They are taught what he or she should and should not do, what is good or bad and what is right or wrong. Learning habits that conform to the customs and traditions of the groups into which the child is born develops a system of values. These values provide justification and motivation or for wanting to refrain from behavior that is disapproved. Hence, creating new laws and stricter enforcement only helps to inform the public of how serious a problem drug use is and in turn, is labeled as deviant behavior. Now knowing why society believes illicit drug use is considered a deviant act, what type of theories can be best used to evaluate them? First, one has to know a brief explanation of each theory and the reasoning behind each theory. These theories care designed to address a problem area and gain insight into why these problems exist. There are many different types of theories, but this paper will focus on three. The first being the labeling theory. The second being the conflict theory and the last being the learning theory. There is no one definition that truly solidifies what deviance is. Society plays a significant role in critiquing deviant behavior as it differs from each individual's cultural beliefs. Sociologists continue to research human interaction/deviant behaviors by analyzing statistics, languages and ethnicity. • 39. Deviant Behavior And Its Effects On Society These past 8 weeks has totally contribute to my understanding of deviant behavior, but at the same time, it changes some of my views toward the word 'deviant' as well. Deviance, as mentioned in my first discussion post, varies from people to people, time to time, culture to culture and more. There is no one definite point to define what behavior is deviant and what is not. Besides that, how do we classify one particular action as deviant? Do we classify it because it harms someone? What if that action somehow benefit someone but creates some extent of harm to another person? Throughout this 8 weeks of discussion and short paper, I realized there is no universally accepted deviant behavior like what I discussed in my first discussion post. I used to believe universally accepted deviant behavior is a behavior that inflicts harm on other people such as homicide. I begin to realized that maybe it creates certain extent of harm on one person but brings certain extent of benefit to another person. For instance, there were drugs that were illegalized because it cause addiction to another person and therefore, it is called deviance if the person is using that illegal drugs. On another hand, those illegal drugs might have medicinal properties that helps in certain sickness. Due to it being deviant, the drugs cannot be prescribed as medicine and this in a way, will cause harm for people who needs to medicine to recover from the sickness. • 49. The Origin Of Criminal Behavior And / Or Deviant Behavior There are numerous theories on how to explain the origin of criminal behavior and/or deviant behavior, one of those theories is called Strain Theory. Robert Merton was the sociologist that developed strain theory in 1949 (revised in 1968). Robert Merton based his theory on the fact that all people want to achieve the American dream of economic status. He believed that environmental factors caused a strain on a person's ability to achieve the American dream of economic success and depending on what the environmental factors are, people reacted differently to this strain (Kapelos– Peters). This theory describes the different types of ways people achieve this goal in relation to social adaptation. Merton's theory has five modes of adaptation which are: conformity, innovation, ritualism, retreatism and rebellion. Robert Merton was among the few sociologists that believed that individual causes such as environmental and biological defects could have potentially contributed to the deviant behavior in society. The sociologist Robert Merton developed the theory called Strain Theory based on social adaptations. He believed that environmental and biological factors contributed to the social deviance. In his theory he explains how deviance may not be a free will, like most sociologist before him thought to be. His inspiration to cultivate the strain theory came from the theory on anomie that was established by Emile Durkheim ( (Kapelos–Peters). Anomie refers to a condition or malaise ... Affiliation with deviant peers predicts delinquent behavior more strongly than community, school, or family. By the definition of deviant, it should be considered deviant because it differs from the norm in a significant way. I would also consider this behavior as dangerous. This is because eating mayonnaise straight out of the jar in quantity's I was eating is very unhealthy and could cause many health issues if done regularly. It should be considered dysfunctional because it was effecting the restaurant I was in. this is because they didn't get business while I was satisfied with the fake mayonnaise. Finally I don't think that eating mayonnaise fits into the distress category. The definition of distress is "extreme anxiety, sorrow, or pain." And I don't see how eating mayonnaise causes this. Moreover, I believe that something such as anxiety, sorrow, or pain can drive someone to eat mayonnaise in large quantities, and vigorously. As it states in the textbook "should we conclude, then, that feelings of distress must always be present before a person's functioning can be considered abnormal? Not necessarily." This leads me to conclude that we should still classify that behavior as abnormal. By definition of abnormal it is understandable. The absolutist perspective, which, according to Hills' article is shared by the largest and most influential segments of the public, contends that a large portion of the population agrees on the basic goals that people should pursue.
