Bye Birdie Vs Mcafee
There are many differences between Bye Bye Birdie's stage musical and its movie musical, and these changes were not made without reason. One of
the most noticeable changes is the seeming role–importance reversal of the show's two leading ladies: Kim MacAfee and Rosie Alvarez. While in the
stage musical, Rosie is a domineering, fierce woman with the ability to lead men whichever way she wanted, and one who refused to back down to the
objections of Albert's nagging mother, in the movie she is dull, even during her musical numbers, and seems to go along with whatever Albert and his
mother instruct her to do. She seems more like a typical American housewife in the making, even becoming fully Americanized; her name changing

Paul Lynde, who played Harry MacAfee in the show, even quoted that they "should have just retitled thefilm 'Hello, Ann–Margret'" (McQueen 1). She
is the most electrifying actress in the film from start–to–finish, beginning with an iconic sequence in which Margret is moved back–and–forth on an
electric treadmill with a blue background behind her, singing a title song that was specifically written for the movie and does not exist in the stage
production (King 1). Although Margret's performance of Kim is simply exquisite, she looks a bit old to play the role (she is 22 playing a 15–year–old).
However, this proved to be no problem for the film's screenwriter, Irving Brecher. All of the changes in the film were made by Brecher, an MGM
screenwriter who specialized in movie musicals, most notably Meet Me in St. Louis, so it is no surprise that these changes were made to fit the
cookie–cutter "American musical" style. Meet Me in St. Louis also featured Judy Garland as the young, virtuous, leading female role whom audiences
loved, so who better to follow her up than Ann–Margret

Adoption Persuasive Speech
You may have discovered that there are varying opinions regarding the "renaming" of a child upon adoption. Some feel that renaming a child is
dismissing their heritage and their personal history/story. In other situations, it seems obvious that the child could benefit from a different name (cases
of abuse or criminal neglect or violent crime, etc.) We acknowledge the seriousness of the discussion and support the right of adoptive parents to
determine what is best for their family and their child. Yet, there are those instances in which the adopted child does need to be renamed or when an
infant adoption leaves adoptive parents in search of the name that fits their baby perfectly. There are countless options, but some of our favorite baby
names can be found in Old Hollywood, Shakespeare's plays, and on the Broadway stage. If you need help naming your adopted baby (or child),
consider a few of these options. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

How Did Ed Sullivan Influence Popular Culture
Have you ever heard of the Beatles or Elvis Presley? Well, I bet you have. Do you know who it was who helped give both the Beatles and Elvis
Presley their debut in the music industry, and played a key role in the Beatles great success? Well, it was Ed Sullivan and if you want to find out more
about this iconic figure in the history of entertainment then keep on reading. Ed Sullivan got his start by working as a newspaper columnist and then
later getting chosen as the host of the variety show Toast of the Town which largely influenced popular culture and the entire music industry through its
telecasts of Elvis Presley and the Beatles and by having all forms of entertainment appear on the show. Ed Sullivan's early career largely influenced his

In Order To Speak To The Issue Of The Proposed Federal
In order to speak to the issue of the proposed federal budget of 2018, I feel I must make certain disclosures. I am a theatre artist and emerging
scholar. I have and stand to continue to benefit from the NEA. However, as a scholar and artist, I hold the ability to criticize systems which do and
do not apply to me as essential to rational discourse. On that note, I also wish to clarify my audience of this essay. Artists have been bogged down
fighting against the government with issues of censorship and simply fighting to keep the NEA alive instead of making space to think critically about
the NEA. For that reason, I speak to other artists with this paper and ask those who do not identify as artists to read this only as observers.... Show more

While the NEA may not take donations from private patrons in grant–giving, nearly every theatre in the country that receives a direct grant from the
NEA also receives private donations in order to operate, as well as local and state arts agencies which act independently of the federal government
("Frequently Asked Questions." 2). In 2014, NEA Direct Grants supported approximately 30,000 live performance events and 3,000 exhibitions ("Fast
Fact about the National..." 1). From the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies, "In combination with approximately $360 million in state
appropriations, the federal–state partnership supports more than 23,000 grants in 5,000 communities across the United States," (1).
As stated before, the NEA maintains partnerships with every state arts agency and regional arts agency in all 435 congressional districts. This speaks
to not only the successful diplomacy and lobbying for arts by the NEA but also the nature of collaboration within art that we artists cherish. Ethically
speaking, removed from economics, the message sent by federal government and artists who support the move to abolish the NEA–in many
ways–disrespects and devalues that collaborative spirit and success. Placed back into economic context, this collaboration also ensures that an
abolition of the NEA would be felt by each and every congressional district in the United States ending decades of successful

Personal Narrative: My First High School Band Teacher
In the summer of 2015 my first high school band director, Mr. Harlan, left to teach for another high school. His students learned this when when
he posted a Facebook status explaining why he was leaving. He was starting his own family and wanted to be closer to home. Everyone was
devastated. Without a director the band felt it would fall apart. During my junior year my drumline teacher who I was close to was in a hit and run
accident and was left brain dead a week later. The whole drumline was left with no hope. I remember getting a text from my brother's girlfriend
during an assembly telling me the news. Many of us felt as if our hearts dropped when we sunk it all in. It was something none of us was able to
believe until we saw it. Our drumline instructor, Chris Chavez, helped us find our second home in the band room where we can all be who we truly
are without judgement. I now realize that what Mr. Harlan and Chris left us with is something no one take away from: the ability to play music. Mr.
Harlan and Chris motivated me to become a better musician and left an impact in my life.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

few of us went to go eat afterwards with our band teacher to reminisce about our season. When we got our new director we made it back into
champs and got 12th place out of 12 schools. A lot of us were upset that it wasn't like the year before when we got 1st place but the bright side of it
was that we were able to say that we still made it champs.

Moral Development In Michael Stewart's Novel Bye-Bye Birdie
In Michael Stewart's novel Bye Bye Birdie, children and their attitudes play a significant role from disobedience and protective parents, to teenage love
and jealousy. Some parents in the little town of Sweet Apple, Ohio attributed children's attitudes to "Elvis–stereotyped" Conrad Birdie; however, others
believed it was their age. Psychologist, Lawrence Kohlberg, described many moral stages each and every person goes through during his or her life.
Two kids I know illustrate Kohlberg's stages of Moral Development very well. Karim is an eight year old boy whom I taught swim lessons to and is
currently in the preconventional stage. Sam is my 12 year old brother and living in the conventional stage of Kohlberg's Moral Stages. Probably one...

During the 1960's a woman's role in society was greatly changed through both social and legal means. Women's rights movements in the United
States date back to 1848 at the Seneca Falls Convention, but were greatly ignored after women were granted the right to vote in 1920 by the
nineteenth amendment. Many reasons contributed to the reemergence of women's movements but the most prevalent is the end of World War II in
1945. During World War II, more than three million women of all classes of society voluntarily exchanged their aprons and jobs as a house wives
and took up real tools in factories. Women working in industrial jobs during World War II affected the mind set of both men and women about the full
capabilities of women. People could... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The commission worked to end job discrimination through legal means. The National Organization for Women (NOW), whose goal it was to give
women "equality of opportunity and freedom of choice", also fought for women's rights and to get men and women the same job benefits. The EEOC,
NOW and organizations like it assured profound change for women by allowing them a legal opportunity to file suit against discriminatory
organizations. By the end of the 1960's women significantly changed their position in society and law and overcame sexism in several ways including
breaking into male–dominated fields, moderate and radical thinking, breaking down male power structures and through cultural expressions. Although
women experienced profound cultural change during the 1960's many things including a male dominated society, the classic perception of women and
opposition to equal work undermined women's movements. Since the birth of the United States, men dominated almost every part of society. This did
not change much during the 1960's. Other movements, including the civil rights and anti–war movements, were controlled by men. This represents
American's view of women as being inferior to men. Women were kept behind closed doors during these movements because it was not seen as
lady–like to publically protest and fight injustices in society. Men also dominated politics during

Instances where Music Has Been Influenced by Politics
Music has always been tied to what has been happening to in the world around its creator. This is true for classical music, as well as popular (pop)
music. Pop music is music that is mass marketed and shared primarily by recordings. The Emergence of pop music occurred because of the
invention of three recording devices, the phonograph cylinder (1878), the flat gramophone record (1887), and the Player piano (1896). Musicians like
James Reese Europe had to find ways to allow himself (and other African Americans) able to perform, as well as get hismusic heard. Shostakovich had
to work within Stalin's Social Realism. Ravel's "La Valse" is a reaction the War in Europe. In many ways has music has been influenced by the
politics of the time these are the three composers I am going to focus on. James Reese Europe lived from 1880 –1919. He studied music theory and
violin from the Assistant Director of the United States Marine Corps Band. When he was 22 he moved to New York, where he was able to get
some work but not a whole lot. This was due to his African heritage. So, he responded by creating the Clef Club. The Clef Club was a multipurpose
organization; it served as social club, a booking agency, and a trade union for African American musicians in New York City. Through this club, he
was able to stage concerts at Carnegie Hall with 125 piece orchestras. In 1913 the Castles, who were a married couple who watered down the elaborate

Bye-Bye Birdie Counterculture
"Bye Bye Birdie" Directed by George Sidney is a movie filmed in 1963. In the movie, a rock star named Conrad Birdie (played by Jesse Pearson)
receives a notice that he is being drafted into the war, but before he leaves for war he travels to a small town in Ohio to perform a farewell television
performance and to kiss his biggest fan. Although the film takes place in 1958, the movie reflects the time which it was filmed in (1963). The sixties
jump started a counterculture that would change the landscape of the United States and the World. The sixties in the United States was an era driven by
a movement of people, mainly youth, fighting for new radical political ideals such as the support for Civil Rights, Women's Rights, and Gay Rights
while opposing war and the political establishment. In a way to fight the establishment and express new views, mainstream counterculture
revolutionized pop–culture by popularizing the acceptance of drugs and sex and inviting in new music, hair styles, and revealing clothing. The film

In the movie, Ann–Margret's character (Kim MacAfee) accepts an invitation to kiss Conrad Birdie (Jesse Pearson) on national television even though

hair and when her mother (played by Mary LaRoche) confronts her about it she argues that it is her hair to do what she pleases which reflects the
movement made in the Sixties for women to have control over their own body. A major theme that grew immensely popular during the sixties was the
feminism movement (things like women's birth control pills were created in 1960). This theme of feminism was definitely reflected in the

our society. Unfortunately, too many Americans do not take time to truly understand the issues and the reasoning behind both sides of the controversy.
To help get a clearer perspective of the problem, there are two very short, but well written pro/con pieces, regarding the debate, by Mitch Albom and
Thomas Sowell. Each presents his own rationale for what should be done about gun control. According to Albom's "Don't Shoot Holes in Gun Control...

Analysis Of The Mental Health Of Ruby Wax
Being able to find a first–person account, which provides explicit details on the mental health of Ruby Wax has been unequivocally challenging.
However, after much research, numerous resources have been sought, which include her autobiography, How Do You Want Me? (2002), Ted talks and
more recently, her appearance on BBC One Who Do You Think You Are? (2017), which contain accounts of her mental health issues and her recovery.
How Do You Want Me? (2002) is an autobiographical memoir by Ruby Wax, which details a brutally honest and touching account of her personal life,
including her upbringing, fame, marriage, children and some details of her breakdown and recovery. Not only is the book an honest account, it is
funny and irreverent.
Ruby Wax is well–known for being a comedian, actress, author and recently a campaigner for mental health. Ruby is an only child, who descends
from Jewish Austrian parents; her father was called Edward and her mother was called Berthe. Her parents escaped from Austria in 1938, due to
impending Nazi threat. They set up roots in Evanston, Illinois. Her father set up his own business, and became a wealthy sausage maker, and her
mother was an accountant. Ruby is married to Ed Bye, who is a British television producer and director. They have three children, a boy and two girls.
In the book, she speaks candidly about how her parents were violent towards her during her upbringing, and how negative her parents were towards her.

The Music Of The Hippies
The hippies were determined to create art of the people, and their chosen art form, rock/folk music, was by its definition populist. One main theme the
music of the hippies was that it was often filled with anger, anger directed at those who would abuse the Constitution for their benefit, who would sell
America out and betray all She stands for– in other words, their parents and government. Many people claimed the hippies were "un–American" and
disrespected and ridiculed patriotism, but in fact they had a great respect for America and believed themselves to be true patriots. They refused to let
America be less than it could be, demanding that it should live up to its potential, that it should shine like a beacon to the world as our founding
forefathers had intended. Hair reflects this more genuine form of tough–love patriotism in many scenes, most notably in the song "Don't Put it Down."
This song shows a unique dichotomy between true patriotism and symbolic patriotism. More importantly, it makes the emphatic point that there is
more than one way to be patriotic. In the original staging of the song, two of the singers folded the American flag in proper military fashion as they
sang, demonstrating that they do respect this symbol of their country. The other side of the song takes the title literally, laughing at the idea that the
flag can never touch the ground. In this way, the song suggests that perhaps those self–proclaimed "patriots" who wanted flag burners and hippie

The shows popularity was able to take a small town artist and make he or she into an enormous success, specifically, Elvis Presley who was,

This gave the show a surprise aspect that added to its popularity. One author concludes, "part of the secret [of the show] was the creative and
extraordinarily competent team he assembled to produce a weekly show with new sets, new costumes, new dance members and musical
arrangements each week" (Ilson 4). Quick preparation for shows was unheard of and people loved the idea of seeing something different each
week. The "surprise" each week kept people intrigued. However, viewers were also intrigued by the fact that the show was live. The idea that a
show was live added thousands of mistakes or accomplishments to be made during the time slot. This also led to the audience having to constantly
be on their toes because one never knew what might occur. Sullivan himself was the one who demanded for the show to be live even after his
competitor television shows changed to filmed and taped shows. To Sullivan, the word "live" symbolized, "adrenaline, spontaneity, excitement as
well as a few mistakes and bloopers" (Ilson 5). The success of the great show began early and went to live on as one of the most renowned broadcasts
of all time. However, it would not be as well known today without the power of mass media.
Television shows would not be as accomplished as they are today without the power of mass media. After the second world war ended in 1945,
television set sales boomed. Because of this, the 1950s was known as the "Golden Age of Television."

What Is Encouragement?
Encouragement. It sounds like such a small thing. Subtle. Cute. It's what we do with timid kittens.
But encouragement isn't cute–it's fraught and powerful. When you're encouraging, you're instilling courage. That's huge. And that's hard. And it's way
more compelling than motivation.
Motivation doesn't depend on circumstances. Motivation is for people who are already inclined to try to succeed.
The commencement addresses that go viral are always more encouraging than they are motivational. The speakers recognize a specific concern–like
needing to get a job or facing an uncertain future–and discuss ways it can be overcome. They don't offer some vague challenge like "surmounting an
obstacle" or "seizing upon your dreams" or "surmounting your dreams by seizing upon an ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Encouragement involves the acknowledgment of a negative thing–that the people being encouraged don't know they're not doing (or trying to do) the
thing they should be doing. They might think they're doing just fine, that they're being appropriately effective and ambitious. Encouragement often
involves bursting a confidence bubble.
To be encouraging, you must believe two things to be true. One, the person is not trying hard enough, which is probably not something the person
wants to hear; and two, if the person tried, he or she could do great things, which is good. The key to encouraging is to deliver the bad news in a way
that doesn't force the person to dwell on inadequacies. The key to encouragement is tact.
Says Whitney Wolfe, founder and CEO of Bumble, a dating app: "Start off by telling them their strong points and acknowledging their efforts and
talents. 'You're extremely creative and you're brilliant, and you're wonderful at coming up with new ideas.' And then from there you can say, 'I would
love to see you be able to segue that into a more organized manner.' It's very easy for people to kind of lose track of what they're doing right and what
they're doing

Elvis Presley Biography Essay
The first time I heard the name Elvis Presley was on the day he died. It was August of 1977, and we had just moved into a new house. My father,
returning home after running some errands, told my mother that he heard on the radio Elvis was dead. I had no idea who this person was, yet I
could tell by the looks on their faces he was someone pretty important. My mother dug out her original 45 single of "Hard Headed Woman", but it
was an album she bought a few days later, featuring all of Elvis's number one hits (Hound Dog, Love Me Tender, Jailhouse Rock, and a slew of
others) that finally introduced me to the King of Rock and Roll. It was around this time that I also saw my first Elvis movie, Love Me Tender, though
I only watched half of it. Over the years, I would catch bits and pieces of other Presley vehicles, including Jailhouse... Show more content on

In the 1983 book Rating the Movie Stars, which was published by the folks at Consumer Guide magazine, writer Joel Hirschhorn called Presley's
movies "a series of silly, tailor–made vehicles", adding that his fans didn't seem to mind "his total lack of talent as an actor". While I'm certainly no
expert on Presley's film career (in fact, I'm an absolute novice), Hirschhorn's statement strikes me as being a bit harsh. In Viva Las Vegas, at least, Elvis
proved himself a competent comedic performer (a late scene in which he intentionally ruins the Count's dinner date with Rusty has some funny
moments), and he and co–star Ann–Margret had great chemistry together (according to the tabloids, their romance continued even when the cameras
weren't rolling). And, of course, Elvis is given several opportunities throughout the movie to do what he did best, belting out such memorable tunes as
the title number, "Come On, Everybody", and a spirited cover of Ray Charles' "What'd I

Ed Sullivan's Influence On Popular Culture
"Mom, let's watch the Ed Sullivan show." This was one of the most common sayings on the night of February 9th, 1964 when more than 70 million
people watched the Beatles debut on national television. Ed Sullivan got his start by working as a newspaper columnist, and then later getting chosen
as the host of the variety show Toast of the Town. Which largely influenced popular culture and the entire music industry through its telecasts of Elvis
Presley and the Beatles, and by having all forms of entertainment appear on the show.

When Ed Sullivan was selected as the host of the Toast of the town, the struggle and problems to get the show rolling were many. In many
American families, the Ed Sullivan show was something that was an institution and was regularly watched every Sunday night. The reason why it
was such a celebrated part of all American families was because even with awkward gestures Ed Sullivan still managed to bring an extraordinary
variety of the best entertainment to American families. The show had its first telecast in the summer of 1948, and was produced with a limited
budget of only $1375. The show was one of many quite similar to it that had very short television lives, and so people were skeptical and didn't
expect it to last long at all, but they went for it anyway with only $375 set aside for talent and the two young stars of the show being Dean Martin
and Jerry Lewis. In the beginning of the show, its performers and range of entertainment was limited, but over the years its scope widened to new
forms and variety of entertainment as the name officially changed to the Ed Sullivan show. Some of the new telecasts and segments came from foreign
countries such as Japan, the Soviet Union, Italy, France, England, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Mexico, Israel, Cuba, and Hong Kong. Some of the shows
were extraordinary in themselves, such as the 90–minute tribute to Irving Berlin, which ended in true Sullivan fashion with a huge American flag in
fireworks and the entire cast singing "God Bless America" (Brooks & Marsh,

Dr. Lawrence Kohlberg 's ' Bye, ' Children And Their...
Psychologist, Lawrence Kohlberg, described many moral stages each and every person goes through during his or her
life. I know two children who illustrate Kohlberg 's stages of Moral Development very well. Karim is an eight year old boy to whom I taught
swim lessons, and he is currently in the preconventional stage. Sam is my 12 year old brother and living in the conventional stage of Kohlberg's
Moral Stages. As one of the most difficult children I have ever taught lessons to, Karim struggled with following directions, respecting his teachers,
and working hard. He was given to me to work with for two reasons, so I could fix his stroke and because he refused to obey authority. While his
previous instructor is my friend, he lacked the gumption to punish his students when they were disobedient, like Karim. Despite sitting around the
pool 30 minutes before his lesson, Karim was always late. Once in the water every excuse in the book came out: goggles filled up with water, legs
and arms were tired, he needed to go the restroom, he did not understand what I was saying, or he just had no desire to perform to the best of his
abilities. Many frustrations

Textual Analysis Of The Movie Bye Birdie
In the beginning of the film the audience is first welcome with Rose Perez (Tina) dancing against the back drop of Brooklyn brownstone stairs. This
is supported by the film theme song Fight the Power by Public enemy which is heard blaring in the background while the character is dancing. The
tone of the song seems quite aggressive if not rebellious, this was due to the fact that the song was going to be used as a leitmotif throughout the film
similar to other films like Indian jones (Steven Spielberg) and even under the skin (Jonathan Glazer).
It was said that Spike Lee gained his stylistic inspiration from films Bye Bye birdie (George Birdie) and apparently the opening from the Cosby Show.

The Positive And Negative Impacts Of The Theatrical...

which being the state of the American theatre and its institutional need for centralization. (Mroczka) The aim of the following discussion is to
contextualize this organization within American theatre history while illustrating the positive and negative impacts of The Theatrical Syndicate on the
theatre community. For much of the 19th century, theatre production hinged on resident stock company and visiting star systems. The former was an
English import and signified the delineations between a permanent or touring company. Resident companies had an arsenal of plays that would be
performed nightly, on a rotating basis, by actors selected on their ability to play interchangeable "stock" characters. This practice was innovated
mid–century by the "visiting star system." The resident stock company was self–sufficient in staging productions, but when big name actors came into
town, they would often make their way on the bill for local productions as a way to draw crowds. (Encyclopedia Britannica) As a promotional method,
however, this system would prove too great a burden on operating costs. This would serve as one of many reasons American theatre would shortly

Bye Bye Birdie Analysis
The Broadway musical Bye Bye Birdie premiered in 1960 and continues to enjoy popularity among various audiences. Written and composed by Lee
Adams and Charles Strouse, the musical fictionalizes the real–life induction of rock–and–roll idol Elvis Presley through the character of Conrad Birdie
into the United States Army. One important element of the musical's plot is the excitement of a group of teenagers in a small Ohio town when they
learn of the arrival of a rock star and the prospect of one lucky girl getting a final good–bye kiss. The version of Bye Bye Birdie that was reviewed for
this analysis was an August 2017 stage production by Gulfport Little Theatre. Like the original production of the musical, the Gulfport Little Theater
production stayed truthful to biographical details of Elvis's life and all actors were highly professional in their representation of individual characters;
however, unlike the original production, the set was reduced to an absolute minimum which was clearly noticeable to the audience. Both productions of
the musical have identical plots and scene sequences. These may seem self–explanatory; however, it is noteworthy that directors often take artistic
liberties in interpreting plays or musicals, especially when they may appear dated to contemporary audiences. This, however, was not the case in the
2017 production of Bye Bye Birdie because it stuck strictly to script; so much so, that actors could have been exchanged across plays without any

Bye Birdie Vs Mcafee

  • 1. Bye Birdie Vs Mcafee There are many differences between Bye Bye Birdie's stage musical and its movie musical, and these changes were not made without reason. One of the most noticeable changes is the seeming role–importance reversal of the show's two leading ladies: Kim MacAfee and Rosie Alvarez. While in the stage musical, Rosie is a domineering, fierce woman with the ability to lead men whichever way she wanted, and one who refused to back down to the objections of Albert's nagging mother, in the movie she is dull, even during her musical numbers, and seems to go along with whatever Albert and his mother instruct her to do. She seems more like a typical American housewife in the making, even becoming fully Americanized; her name changing from Rosie Alvarez in... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Paul Lynde, who played Harry MacAfee in the show, even quoted that they "should have just retitled thefilm 'Hello, Ann–Margret'" (McQueen 1). She is the most electrifying actress in the film from start–to–finish, beginning with an iconic sequence in which Margret is moved back–and–forth on an electric treadmill with a blue background behind her, singing a title song that was specifically written for the movie and does not exist in the stage production (King 1). Although Margret's performance of Kim is simply exquisite, she looks a bit old to play the role (she is 22 playing a 15–year–old). However, this proved to be no problem for the film's screenwriter, Irving Brecher. All of the changes in the film were made by Brecher, an MGM screenwriter who specialized in movie musicals, most notably Meet Me in St. Louis, so it is no surprise that these changes were made to fit the cookie–cutter "American musical" style. Meet Me in St. Louis also featured Judy Garland as the young, virtuous, leading female role whom audiences loved, so who better to follow her up than Ann–Margret ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Adoption Persuasive Speech You may have discovered that there are varying opinions regarding the "renaming" of a child upon adoption. Some feel that renaming a child is dismissing their heritage and their personal history/story. In other situations, it seems obvious that the child could benefit from a different name (cases of abuse or criminal neglect or violent crime, etc.) We acknowledge the seriousness of the discussion and support the right of adoptive parents to determine what is best for their family and their child. Yet, there are those instances in which the adopted child does need to be renamed or when an infant adoption leaves adoptive parents in search of the name that fits their baby perfectly. There are countless options, but some of our favorite baby names can be found in Old Hollywood, Shakespeare's plays, and on the Broadway stage. If you need help naming your adopted baby (or child), consider a few of these options. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 3. How Did Ed Sullivan Influence Popular Culture Have you ever heard of the Beatles or Elvis Presley? Well, I bet you have. Do you know who it was who helped give both the Beatles and Elvis Presley their debut in the music industry, and played a key role in the Beatles great success? Well, it was Ed Sullivan and if you want to find out more about this iconic figure in the history of entertainment then keep on reading. Ed Sullivan got his start by working as a newspaper columnist and then later getting chosen as the host of the variety show Toast of the Town which largely influenced popular culture and the entire music industry through its telecasts of Elvis Presley and the Beatles and by having all forms of entertainment appear on the show. Ed Sullivan's early career largely influenced his career later in life. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He declared that his column "Ed Sullivan Sees Broadway," would save Broadway reporting from its sad, salacious, and prurient state. • 4. In Order To Speak To The Issue Of The Proposed Federal In order to speak to the issue of the proposed federal budget of 2018, I feel I must make certain disclosures. I am a theatre artist and emerging scholar. I have and stand to continue to benefit from the NEA. However, as a scholar and artist, I hold the ability to criticize systems which do and do not apply to me as essential to rational discourse. On that note, I also wish to clarify my audience of this essay. Artists have been bogged down fighting against the government with issues of censorship and simply fighting to keep the NEA alive instead of making space to think critically about the NEA. For that reason, I speak to other artists with this paper and ask those who do not identify as artists to read this only as observers.... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... While the NEA may not take donations from private patrons in grant–giving, nearly every theatre in the country that receives a direct grant from the NEA also receives private donations in order to operate, as well as local and state arts agencies which act independently of the federal government ("Frequently Asked Questions." 2). In 2014, NEA Direct Grants supported approximately 30,000 live performance events and 3,000 exhibitions ("Fast Fact about the National..." 1). From the National Assembly of State Arts Agencies, "In combination with approximately $360 million in state appropriations, the federal–state partnership supports more than 23,000 grants in 5,000 communities across the United States," (1). As stated before, the NEA maintains partnerships with every state arts agency and regional arts agency in all 435 congressional districts. This speaks to not only the successful diplomacy and lobbying for arts by the NEA but also the nature of collaboration within art that we artists cherish. Ethically speaking, removed from economics, the message sent by federal government and artists who support the move to abolish the NEA–in many ways–disrespects and devalues that collaborative spirit and success. Placed back into economic context, this collaboration also ensures that an abolition of the NEA would be felt by each and every congressional district in the United States ending decades of successful ... His students learned this when when he posted a Facebook status explaining why he was leaving. He was starting his own family and wanted to be closer to home. Everyone was devastated. Without a director the band felt it would fall apart. During my junior year my drumline teacher who I was close to was in a hit and run accident and was left brain dead a week later. The whole drumline was left with no hope. I remember getting a text from my brother's girlfriend during an assembly telling me the news. Many of us felt as if our hearts dropped when we sunk it all in. It was something none of us was able to believe until we saw it. Our drumline instructor, Chris Chavez, helped us find our second home in the band room where we can all be who we truly are without judgement. Moral Development In Michael Stewart's Novel Bye-Bye Birdie In Michael Stewart's novel Bye Bye Birdie, children and their attitudes play a significant role from disobedience and protective parents, to teenage love and jealousy. Some parents in the little town of Sweet Apple, Ohio attributed children's attitudes to "Elvis–stereotyped" Conrad Birdie; however, others believed it was their age. Women's rights movements in the United States date back to 1848 at the Seneca Falls Convention, but were greatly ignored after women were granted the right to vote in 1920 by the nineteenth amendment. Many reasons contributed to the reemergence of women's movements but the most prevalent is the end of World War II in 1945. During World War II, more than three million women of all classes of society voluntarily exchanged their aprons and jobs as a house wives and took up real tools in factories. Women working in industrial jobs during World War II affected the mind set of both men and women about the full capabilities of women. People could... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The commission worked to end job discrimination through legal means. The National Organization for Women (NOW), whose goal it was to give women "equality of opportunity and freedom of choice", also fought for women's rights and to get men and women the same job benefits. The EEOC, NOW and organizations like it assured profound change for women by allowing them a legal opportunity to file suit against discriminatory organizations. By the end of the 1960's women significantly changed their position in society and law and overcame sexism in several ways including breaking into male–dominated fields, moderate and radical thinking, breaking down male power structures and through cultural expressions. Although women experienced profound cultural change during the 1960's many things including a male dominated society, the classic perception of women and opposition to equal work undermined women's movements. Since the birth of the United States, men dominated almost every part of society. This did not change much during the 1960's. Other movements, including the civil rights and anti–war movements, were controlled by men. This represents American's view of women as being inferior to men. • 9. Instances where Music Has Been Influenced by Politics Music has always been tied to what has been happening to in the world around its creator. This is true for classical music, as well as popular (pop) music. Pop music is music that is mass marketed and shared primarily by recordings. The Emergence of pop music occurred because of the invention of three recording devices, the phonograph cylinder (1878), the flat gramophone record (1887), and the Player piano (1896). Musicians like James Reese Europe had to find ways to allow himself (and other African Americans) able to perform, as well as get hismusic heard. Shostakovich had to work within Stalin's Social Realism. Ravel's "La Valse" is a reaction the War in Europe. In many ways has music has been influenced by the politics of the time these are the three composers I am going to focus on. James Reese Europe lived from 1880 –1919. He studied music theory and violin from the Assistant Director of the United States Marine Corps Band. When he was 22 he moved to New York, where he was able to get some work but not a whole lot. This was due to his African heritage. So, he responded by creating the Clef Club. The Clef Club was a multipurpose organization; it served as social club, a booking agency, and a trade union for African American musicians in New York City. Through this club, he was able to stage concerts at Carnegie Hall with 125 piece orchestras. In the movie, a rock star named Conrad Birdie (played by Jesse Pearson) receives a notice that he is being drafted into the war, but before he leaves for war he travels to a small town in Ohio to perform a farewell television performance and to kiss his biggest fan. Although the film takes place in 1958, the movie reflects the time which it was filmed in (1963). The sixties jump started a counterculture that would change the landscape of the United States and the World. The sixties in the United States was an era driven by a movement of people, mainly youth, fighting for new radical political ideals such as the support for Civil Rights, Women's Rights, and Gay Rights while opposing war and the political establishment. In a way to fight the establishment and express new views, mainstream counterculture revolutionized pop–culture by popularizing the acceptance of drugs and sex and inviting in new music, hair styles, and revealing clothing. • 16. Gun Control Argument Gun Control The gun control debate in the US is often contentious and politically divisive. And with upcoming elections always looming in the near future, we will continue hearing a great deal from the media as well as politicians about what should or should not be done about "too many guns" in our society. Unfortunately, too many Americans do not take time to truly understand the issues and the reasoning behind both sides of the controversy. To help get a clearer perspective of the problem, there are two very short, but well written pro/con pieces, regarding the debate, by Mitch Albom and Thomas Sowell. Each presents his own rationale for what should be done about gun control. According to Albom's "Don't Shoot Holes in Gun Control... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... • 18. The Music Of The Hippies The hippies were determined to create art of the people, and their chosen art form, rock/folk music, was by its definition populist. One main theme the music of the hippies was that it was often filled with anger, anger directed at those who would abuse the Constitution for their benefit, who would sell America out and betray all She stands for– in other words, their parents and government. Many people claimed the hippies were "un–American" and disrespected and ridiculed patriotism, but in fact they had a great respect for America and believed themselves to be true patriots. They refused to let America be less than it could be, demanding that it should live up to its potential, that it should shine like a beacon to the world as our founding forefathers had intended. Hair reflects this more genuine form of tough–love patriotism in many scenes, most notably in the song "Don't Put it Down." This song shows a unique dichotomy between true patriotism and symbolic patriotism. More importantly, it makes the emphatic point that there is more than one way to be patriotic. In the original staging of the song, two of the singers folded the American flag in proper military fashion as they sang, demonstrating that they do respect this symbol of their country. The other side of the song takes the title literally, laughing at the idea that the flag can never touch the ground. In this way, the song suggests that perhaps those self–proclaimed "patriots" who wanted flag burners and hippie ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 20. A Nation that was Rocked: How The Ed Sullivan Show... The power of television is strong and inevitable. Television has the ability to draw people in and view the world through a perspective one would think unimaginable. After the second world war ended in 1945, electronic sales boomed and more families started to gather around the tv at night to view widely famous television shows. Specifically, The Ed Sullivan Show was known for its plethora of celebrities and up and coming entertainers. The shows popularity was able to take a small town artist and make he or she into an enormous success, specifically, Elvis Presley who was, "something new under the Sun" (Altschuler 30). Teenagers, however, viewed the television as an escape and a look into the unknown and intriguing world of African ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... This gave the show a surprise aspect that added to its popularity. One author concludes, "part of the secret [of the show] was the creative and extraordinarily competent team he assembled to produce a weekly show with new sets, new costumes, new dance members and musical arrangements each week" (Ilson 4). Quick preparation for shows was unheard of and people loved the idea of seeing something different each week. The "surprise" each week kept people intrigued. However, viewers were also intrigued by the fact that the show was live. The idea that a show was live added thousands of mistakes or accomplishments to be made during the time slot. This also led to the audience having to constantly be on their toes because one never knew what might occur. Sullivan himself was the one who demanded for the show to be live even after his competitor television shows changed to filmed and taped shows. To Sullivan, the word "live" symbolized, "adrenaline, spontaneity, excitement as well as a few mistakes and bloopers" (Ilson 5). The success of the great show began early and went to live on as one of the most renowned broadcasts of all time. However, it would not be as well known today without the power of mass media. • 21. What Is Encouragement? Encouragement. It sounds like such a small thing. Subtle. Cute. It's what we do with timid kittens. But encouragement isn't cute–it's fraught and powerful. When you're encouraging, you're instilling courage. That's huge. And that's hard. And it's way more compelling than motivation. Motivation doesn't depend on circumstances. Motivation is for people who are already inclined to try to succeed. The commencement addresses that go viral are always more encouraging than they are motivational. The speakers recognize a specific concern–like needing to get a job or facing an uncertain future–and discuss ways it can be overcome. Encouragement involves the acknowledgment of a negative thing–that the people being encouraged don't know they're not doing (or trying to do) the thing they should be doing. They might think they're doing just fine, that they're being appropriately effective and ambitious. Encouragement often involves bursting a confidence bubble. To be encouraging, you must believe two things to be true. One, the person is not trying hard enough, which is probably not something the person wants to hear; and two, if the person tried, he or she could do great things, which is good. The key to encouraging is to deliver the bad news in a way that doesn't force the person to dwell on inadequacies. The key to encouragement is tact. Says Whitney Wolfe, founder and CEO of Bumble, a dating app: "Start off by telling them their strong points and acknowledging their efforts and talents. My father, returning home after running some errands, told my mother that he heard on the radio Elvis was dead. I had no idea who this person was, yet I could tell by the looks on their faces he was someone pretty important. My mother dug out her original 45 single of "Hard Headed Woman", but it was an album she bought a few days later, featuring all of Elvis's number one hits (Hound Dog, Love Me Tender, Jailhouse Rock, and a slew of others) that finally introduced me to the King of Rock and Roll. While I'm certainly no expert on Presley's film career (in fact, I'm an absolute novice), Hirschhorn's statement strikes me as being a bit harsh. In Viva Las Vegas, at least, Elvis proved himself a competent comedic performer (a late scene in which he intentionally ruins the Count's dinner date with Rusty has some funny moments), and he and co–star Ann–Margret had great chemistry together (according to the tabloids, their romance continued even when the cameras weren't rolling). When Ed Sullivan was selected as the host of the Toast of the town, the struggle and problems to get the show rolling were many. In many American families, the Ed Sullivan show was something that was an institution and was regularly watched every Sunday night. The reason why it was such a celebrated part of all American families was because even with awkward gestures Ed Sullivan still managed to bring an extraordinary variety of the best entertainment to American families. The show had its first telecast in the summer of 1948, and was produced with a limited budget of only $1375. The show was one of many quite similar to it that had very short television lives, and so people were skeptical and didn't expect it to last long at all, but they went for it anyway with only $375 set aside for talent and the two young stars of the show being Dean Martin and Jerry Lewis. In the beginning of the show, its performers and range of entertainment was limited, but over the years its scope widened to new forms and variety of entertainment as the name officially changed to the Ed Sullivan show. Some of the new telecasts and segments came from foreign countries such as Japan, the Soviet Union, Italy, France, England, Spain, Portugal, Ireland, Mexico, Israel, Cuba, and Hong Kong. In Michael Stewart's novel Bye Bye Birdie, children and their attitudes play a significant role from disobedience and protective parents, to teenage love and jealousy. Some parents in the little town of Sweet Apple, Ohio attributed children's attitudes to "Elvis–stereotyped" Conrad Birdie; however, others believed it was their age. Psychologist, Lawrence Kohlberg, described many moral stages each and every person goes through during his or her life. I know two children who illustrate Kohlberg 's stages of Moral Development very well. Karim is an eight year old boy to whom I taught swim lessons, and he is currently in the preconventional stage. Sam is my 12 year old brother and living in the conventional stage of Kohlberg's Moral Stages. As one of the most difficult children I have ever taught lessons to, Karim struggled with following directions, respecting his teachers, and working hard. He was given to me to work with for two reasons, so I could fix his stroke and because he refused to obey authority. While his previous instructor is my friend, he lacked the gumption to punish his students when they were disobedient, like Karim. Despite sitting around the pool 30 minutes before his lesson, Karim was always late. Once in the water every excuse in the book came out: goggles filled up with water, legs and arms were tired, he needed to go the restroom, he did not understand what I was saying, or he just had no desire to perform to the best of his abilities. With resounding consistency, every reference to The Theatrical Syndicate begins with the same anecdotal tale: "One day in 1896, six theatre businessmen met for lunch at the Holland House Hotel." The gentlemen gathered that day where in a consensus about a few things, but the greatest of which being the state of the American theatre and its institutional need for centralization. (Mroczka) The aim of the following discussion is to contextualize this organization within American theatre history while illustrating the positive and negative impacts of The Theatrical Syndicate on the theatre community. For much of the 19th century, theatre production hinged on resident stock company and visiting star systems. The former was an English import and signified the delineations between a permanent or touring company. Resident companies had an arsenal of plays that would be performed nightly, on a rotating basis, by actors selected on their ability to play interchangeable "stock" characters. This practice was innovated mid–century by the "visiting star system." The resident stock company was self–sufficient in staging productions, but when big name actors came into town, they would often make their way on the bill for local productions as a way to draw crowds. • 31. Bye Bye Birdie Analysis The Broadway musical Bye Bye Birdie premiered in 1960 and continues to enjoy popularity among various audiences. Written and composed by Lee Adams and Charles Strouse, the musical fictionalizes the real–life induction of rock–and–roll idol Elvis Presley through the character of Conrad Birdie into the United States Army. One important element of the musical's plot is the excitement of a group of teenagers in a small Ohio town when they learn of the arrival of a rock star and the prospect of one lucky girl getting a final good–bye kiss. The version of Bye Bye Birdie that was reviewed for this analysis was an August 2017 stage production by Gulfport Little Theatre. Like the original production of the musical, the Gulfport Little Theater production stayed truthful to biographical details of Elvis's life and all actors were highly professional in their representation of individual characters; however, unlike the original production, the set was reduced to an absolute minimum which was clearly noticeable to the audience. Both productions of the musical have identical plots and scene sequences. These may seem self–explanatory; however, it is noteworthy that directors often take artistic liberties in interpreting plays or musicals, especially when they may appear dated to contemporary audiences. This, however, was not the case in the 2017 production of Bye Bye Birdie because it stuck strictly to script; so much so, that actors could have been exchanged across plays without any ...
