You will learn how to make your training aids more effectiveYou will learn how to select the correct training aid for different situationsYou will learn about how to evaluate training sites so that you can prepare for presentations
By the end of this lesson you will be able to Describe guidelines for the development and use of visual aids in a classroom settingCreate effective visual aids that will enhance your trainingChoose training aids that are appropriate for your training sessions
What is a visual aid?Merriam-Webster.com defines a training aid as follows: an instructional device (as a chart, map, or model) that appeals chiefly to vision Visual aids can include both the projected and the non-projected and may include: pictures, posters, flipcharts, flannel boards, audio, handouts, transparencies, maps, slide, realia, digital and overhead projections, films and computer presentations. Please turn to page 4-2 in your coursebook.Take a few minutes to list 3 different types of training that could be improved/enhanced with the incorporation of a visual aid.List suggestions on flipchart
Discuss purpose of visual aids.Visual aids should enhance your presentation, not define it. Don’t let your visual aids upstage you!!
Who has used Flip charts?Discuss pros & cons of completing ahead as opposed to completing during presentationAlternatives if you have poor handwriting?Have someone else complete Use blank PowerPoint slide and typeTips:Make letters at least 1-1/2” tall– 3” ideal2”+ between linesTry not to use bottom 1/3 of page– hard to readStand to the (audience) left of chart; try to face audience as much as possibleLeave a blank page between pages.Other ideas:Parking lotStory boardingGroup exercises
Who has access to an overhead projector?Who has used transparencies in a presentation?Pros: Low tech. Available when Internet is downEasy set upEasy to change order of slidesCan use as back up for PowerPoint Cons:OutdatedEquip. not always availableStaticRemember: Always have an extra bulb available.
We will be discussing PowerPointA few notes about Apple Keynote: iWork is less expensive than Office Suite; presentations can be converted, but sometimes with unexpected problems. Small market shareOpenOffice: is free; fewer bells and whistles. Some online options will be discussed in lesson 5
Worthless as a graphic and as a way to provide information. How could this info be more effectively displayed?
An extreme example of too much on one slide. Keep it simple!
Or not. From the print screen, select all slides to print, or only certain slides. Turn to page 4-7 for a screenshot of the print box.
You can also print an outline; or a page with notes.
More trainers are considering green options in lieu of handouts. If you have email addresses for your learners, consider sending them links to training materials; blog posts can be an effective follow up for in-house (staff) training.
Realia is a term used in library science and education to refer to certain real life objects. They can be objects like coins, tools and textiles that do not easily fit into orderly categories of printed material. These materials allow learners to see, hear and in some cases touch the object. Realia consists of actual objects or copies of items that are used to facilitate teaching. It helps provide a frame of reference and gives the learner meaning to associate with the vocabulary. Other training aids:Make sure to plan for problems with training aids and possible trainer absence Materials to have on hand must include:Introductory material with background information on the lesson and learnersTrainer presentation guide including facilitation tipsDetailed instructional plan – with trainer notesMaster copies of handouts, slides, workbooks, and transparencies Also consider how you personally will impact your training. Consider outfit, preparation, knowledge of topic, etc.
Practice with a clock to check your timing.Practice breathingPractice reading aloudPractice maintaining eye contact Visual aids are tools for assisting in presenting information. Select visual aids carefully. Try to choose aids that will best fit the training situation. The presentation shouldn’t rely heavily on visual aids. They should support, not compromise your presentation. The better prepared you are, the more effective your training.
