Dance Marathon
Last One Standing Various painters use their works of art as a representation of feelings. They
include symbols, figures, and expression to reveal their emotions through the form of art. Philip
Evergood's painting Dance Marathon illustrates the desperate times surrounding the Great
Depression. In the scene, dancers compete for a cash prize as they see who can dance the longest.
He portrays the cruelty of the time through this vulgar setting. The painting easily captures the
viewer's attention mostly from the use of color, figure, spatial effects, and other techniques created
by the artist. The size of Dance Marathon is not oversized, but it is relatively large and invites the
spectator to look at the painting. The perspective ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Red appears to dominate the painting and serves as an eye–catching color. The use of intensely
saturated colors draws the attention to the front couple. Additionally, the red color plays with the
mind of the onlooker without them thinking about it. It suggests deep passion, anger, and struggle.
The artist intends to relay his feelings about the event to the viewer. His outlook consists of disgust
towards the great depression that leaves many taken advantage of due to desperation.
The couple positioned in the front appears very large to make the painting 3–D. The relative size of
the dancers drastically shifts to create a window into the painting. The viewer can imagine being a
part of the event and watching the poverty–stricken dancers. The angle that the painting is at appears
to be almost a bird's eye view. This adds to the effect of feeling as part of the audience. Spatial
features are also added with overlap making figures look even more distant. Almost everything can
be seen all the way to the back of the painting as the lighting in Dance Marathon spreads equally
throughout the painting. Many lamps hang from the ceiling to give it a sense of many sources of
light and to distribute the light evenly.
Dance Marathon as the title brings clear understanding to the artwork. Marathon means an event
that lasts longer than normal and requires great endurance. The audience recognizes that the people
struggle to move because

Like They Do in Honolulu
The experience of the hula movement session as well as hula itself is difficult to write about and
analyze at length for a number of reasons. To start, hula is relatively simple, not to learn, but as a
social wonder and characteristic of Hawaii. Although the dance possesses religious undertones –
the documentary mentioned that sincere hula dancers appeal to the Hawaiian gods to assist them –
it certainly isn 't driven by an overbearing religious impulse. Furthermore, although hula and its
sagas are transmitted from generation to generation as oral traditions (211), the traditions are not
sustained out of fear, intimidation, or social status. On the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Hula dances are storytelling dances, and many stories are passed from generation to generation; the
boundary lines of history and legend are thus blurred and each story becomes cherished as a window
into the past. My suspicion of hula 's traditional roots was certainly confirmed.
As Stiller 's thesis contends, the hula tradition has been largely preserved and advanced due to the
efforts of women in both the foreground – as soloists and desirable performers – and in the
behind–the–scenes, or what Stiller prefers to call the "underground, what happens backstage during
teaching and preparation (210–11). Throughout the twentieth century, the "staging [and] continuity
of the performance tradition" has been promoted and shaped by "the hands of women" (211). This is
a fascinating social observation, surprisingly devoid of any overt value judgments from Stiller 's
end.
Tourism and commercialism doubtless played a role in hula 's development. I was surprised that
Noelani – a Hawaiian herself – taught us a hula dance accompanied by an English song!
Furthermore, the song 's lyrics presumptuously, albeit playfully, depicted the residents of Honolulu
as the "Other" with repetitive use of the word "they." Noelani explained that tourists encouraged the
hula to develop in certain ways rather than

My Papa's Waltz by Theodore Roethke Essay
Any interpretation of this story is due to the reader's personal emotions and feelings toward his or
her own Papa. This story can be either a dance between him and his father, thus bringing them
closer together. However, there is a darker side of this poem, on this side it is an unsettling fight
between a boy and his drunken father and all the intimacy of the dance does not make an impression
on the reader and is overshadowed by the anger they feel. Theodore Roethke manipulates our
emotions in this poem using literary convention. A Waltz is a lighthearted, easily accessible dance.
In a waltz, a couple sways back and forth as they go in a circle. Our emotions of this poem seem to
follow this same path as we can see comforting and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The whiskey on his breath is not necessarily negative due to the factors of the working class culture
in 1948 when this poem was published. To add on to this view that he is a hard worker with
knuckles that are battered and a "palm caked hard by dirt," the man is a grafter who works long and
hard for the family he loves. The overwhelming joy he feels when he sees his son makes him want
to dance in a waltz. Due to him and his father's height difference, the son's ear scraped on the
father's belt buckle. The longer they dance the happier he get. This causes him to become more and
more clumsier due to his drunken state, and it starts to become too much for the son the handle and
begins to become very rough. This dance becomes so rough that the dancing causes the pans to fall
to the floor and causes the son to, "hang on like death" to his father. The beating on his son's head is
part of joy at the music he hears in his head. The mother remains an outsider to what is actually
happening in front of her and is naturally unhappy due to the random disturbance the father makes.
After the dance is over the son goes to bed and clings to his father's shirt in love and admiration for
him. The negative side of this poem is an abusive drunken father. This is prevalent to his father's
obvious drunkenness. This is tied together with the image of a knuckle, beating, belt buckle, and
negativity in the word "death." These

Choreographer Busby Berkeley’s Contributions to Film...
Choreographer Busby Berkeley's Contributions to Film
Berkeley's creations were not meant to focus on dance. He envisioned an overall moving pattern,
which he created by using moving bodies. He made the art of choreography a technique of design
and visual mathematics, and combined this with his knowledge of film to bring his vision to life on
the big screen. The skill of this multi–talented man brought Hollywood musicals to their full
potential, creating a high demand for dance in films.
William Berkeley Enos was born November 29, 1895, in Los Angeles. He began his career as a
choreographer in 1918 as a lieutenant in the army. Conducting and directing parades. He gained the
ability to work with large masses of moving bodies to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
His camera was said to have done the dancing. It was not the individual dancers, but his quick
editing cuts, multiple angles and shots, and special effects that created the brilliant movement.
Possibly Berkeley's most memorable filming technique is his use of overhead angles. He even
would drill holes in the ceilings of the studios so that he could make these shots possible. That is
how he created his kaleidoscopic patterns that he was well known for.
One of Berkeley's greatest displays of choreography is the production of 42nd Street. With the
popularity of musical films decreasing around 1932, Warner Brothers decided they needed a real
spectacle to save the genre. They brought in Busby Berkeley to create it. It was a smash hit, and so
Berkeley was given an impressive seven year contract. Between 1933 to 1937, Berkeley created the
dance sequences for almost every successful musical Warner Bros. released.
Some of his most well known productions were Footlight Parade(1933), Dames(1934), his
extravagant use of 150 dancers in "Lullaby of Broadway" in the film Gold Diggers of 1935, Babes
in Arms(1939), and his last film Take Me Out to the Ballgame(1949).
The life of this genius came to a sad ending. Throughout his life, Berkeley drank a lot. He also loved
his mother more dearly than anyone else in the world. The combination of these loves almost drove
him to insanity. After an accident caused by his drunk driving that resulted in the death of

The Rebound Effect For The Disabled Dancer
The Rebound Effect For The Disabled Dancer
While Rebound is essential to an day to day life, a rebound can happen anytime, during a
performance or just by being sick and getting up the next day perfectly fine. Dancers have a step
called rebound and it helps them push energy out their bodies to move fluidly to another spot in the
space. I have also discovered I had a rebound effect in life due to Crohn 's Disease and I had a major
surgery and came back four months later dancing. As a human being you think of life as being very
delicate but at the same time doing everything you can to live life to the fullest. So my idea came
from a place of healing and recovery sense. This past year has been very challenging since being
diagnosed with Crohn's. And very difficult to find myself back in effect, of dancing everyday, but
now I feel like I am really having a rebound effect. I decide then this paper could be a way to open
up and find some sources to deal with my rebound and to know that I am not alone in this situation.
First I wanted to know the definition of a rebound in all different ways medical and the dance
definition. As dancers every moment is special because anything can happen and stop our dancing
career. That 's why in life a rebound is bound to happen at least once in our lifetime, so let's talk a
little about the word rebound. When you think about the word Rebound your mind goes straight to
the definition in a

Romantic Ballet
The theatre is full of young men and women. The gas lanterns dimly light the room and the
silhouette of a figure can be seen in the shadows of the stage. As she emerges, she is like a dream: a
tall, elegant body with a form fitting bodice and tutu. She is entrancing on her tiny pointe shoes as
she floats across the stage. Love and passion fill the air as she moves in such a way that is almost
magical. The Romantic Ballet Period introduced the aspects of theme, costume, and new technique
to the dance world and its influences are still seen in contemporary works in ballet. Ballet has been
an art form since the late fifteenth century, but society did not truly see the impact of ballet until the
nineteenth century. Modern day thinkers ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
An article by Camille Hardy states, "Romanticism had deep roots in the national psyches...of
France." Rooted from Neoclassicism, Romanticism revolted against the rigid forms of classic works
(Clark and Crisp). It was essentially a literary movement and influenced almost all movements of
art. The romantics sought out for a way to break free from their classical ancestors and achieved a
great accomplishment than anyone had ever thought possible. In a span of two decades, ballet was
transformed becoming a major theatre art and gaining the acceptance from its viewers (Guest). The
Romantic Ballet period was an international movement spreading from Paris to New York (Garafola
"Rethinking..."). Although it can be seen throughout many cultures, it remained predominantly in
Paris, where it began. The stage was the ballerina's focal point. The Théâtre de l'Académie Royale
de Musique or Paris Opéra first introduced the prospects that Romantic ballet could provide. In fact,
it proved to do much better than critics had once thought. Ballet once being subservient to the Opéra
was now its own theatre art. Before the Romantic period, dancing and singing were performed
together. It was only until the development of the ballet d´action that ballet could be performed
separately from opera. After this, ballet became a major entertainment piece to society, which it
accomplished with only the help of an orchestra (Guest). Before the turn of the

Dance Appreciation : The Dance
In one my classes; Dance Appreciation, I had an assignment to view a dance piece on YouTube. The
dance that I viewed was called "She without arm, he without leg, Hand in Hand". The dance was not
only informative, but it was enlightening to watch.
I liked the dance piece because the dancers were limited physically in their bodies, but their dancing
was beyond limited and astounding. At first, I was a bit doubtful and sceptical before watching the
dance because I thought the dancers were going to perform with very minimal and stiff movements.
But to my surprise, the dancers moved gracefully on stage. The two dancers used quite a lot of
space. The dancers used all levels of space from low to high. For example, the dancers executed
amazing leaps, jumps and lifts in their performance that represented as high levels of space. The
dancers movements were grand; however, they were also whimsical, sharp, circular, and clean. The
dancers utilized most parts of the stage. The pattern of the space that performers used was more
curved than linear. There were two dancers in this piece, the male dancer that had only one leg and
the female dancer that had only one arm. The genre of dance that was performed was a ballet;
though, in my observations the dance seemed to be more contemporary than ballet. For instance, the
tempo of the dance was slower and had less rhythm than most classical ballets I've observed. Also,
there were a couple of pauses and rests during the performance. The dance

Rhetorical analysis of Strip Club Owners
This country was founded on the ideals of freedom and those freedoms were somewhat clearly
defined the day the US Constitution was drafted. That being said, people and judges in every state of
the union have a different interpretation of what these freedoms are. This is the case for the strip
club owners in the state of Kentucky, although they are not the only state to be under fire from the
city governments. The main issue at hand is that city officials are being pressured to restrict strip
clubs from the practices that have formed their business and this is ultimately impacting the
customer base seeking this entertainment avenue. Strict ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Club owners are now backed into a corner and faced with a brand new choice. Do they sit idly by
and just accept these new zoning regulations or fight for what they believe is their unalienable
rights?
The battle continues to rage daily between club owners and their city governance. Enlisting the
services of a competent, hard working lawyer ensures that if there is room to avoid zoning issues, a
good lawyer will find it. Imagine being the owner of a business and finding out that you can no
longer provide all the services your customers are demanding of you. How would you or I go about
circumventing our current situation? One important opinion that many club owners voice is that
with the decrease in club hours of operation and with the addition of clothing, clubs will bring in
less revenue. This is important because now the city takes a hit in the amount of taxes that it garners
from the club. Taxes that can help go to better schools possibly or an added boost to an over
strapped budget, will no longer find the coffers of city government. Obviously the goal in mind for
the political leaders is to keep their taxpayers and voters happy for the next election period, but is
taking away from the city's income the right avenue to take? Attorney Frank Mascagni III, who
represents the club Déjà vu in Louisville said, "Due to the new ordinances, we're going to lose
another million dollars in taxes on whiskey, wine and beer and bar food, and

Martin Luther King Legacy Analysis
I believe in art because it expresses a scenario closer to reality than any other form of movement.
Art can make a person cry, or laugh, or scream just by relating with society's feelings, repeating
history, and letting creativity fly. It teaches people about tragedies going on now, or in the past, such
as the heart throbbing dance choreography known as Legacy. My grandmother and I watched the
production at a studio I've taken classes at for about one and a half years. Although my body forced
itself to try its hardest during class, I was never completely intrigued in the movement, so
combinations just seemed like steps. When we came into the small theater in University City, St.

suffered through critical times throughout our history in each of their faces. You watched them

they were their ancestors working in the cotton fields and drinking out of a black only drinking

depending on their ethnicity. This showed the black dancers what African Americans suffered
through and gave them mentality of what separation was like, so they could live in the
choreography. And the realistic being of this art, of this movement, brought the audience back in

Billy Elliot Into the World Essay
Billy Elliot Into the World
There are a variety of pathways and elements, which enables individual transition into a New World.
'Into the World' is about people choosing the next pathway into their life by their own determination,
experiences and support which enables them to go beyond their original location and narrow view
of the world. 'Billy Elliot' relates to the elective 'Into the World' as the film is about new possibilities
opening up, determination, family support and individual growth. Two related texts that show other
kinds of transitions into new worlds include an article on the Queensland School of Excellence titled

The use of doors is a reoccuring symbol representing new worlds or barriers between worlds and
used throughout the film. Billy's initial glimpse of the ballet class through the door, and the way he
enters the class hesitantly symbolises a new world opening up to Billy. Billy's determination is one
the key elements involved in his eventual transition into a different world. Realising that his father
would not allow him to pursue ballet, he attends lessons in secret and practices extensively in his
bedroom, the bathroom and wherever else he can have some privacy. The door motif is again
prominent with Billy's father physically holding Billy back from pursing his pathway into a new
world. Many of the doors are shut and he must fight to break these barriers down. For Billy, dance
becomes a means of escape from his surroundings, a refuge, a form of self–expression and,
ultimately, a way out of his closed community and into the larger world. The limited use of colour
reminds us that the family world is collapsing just as new horizons are opening up for Billy. Billy is
determined to go against the rules and traditions of his family and forge his way into a new world.
Determination is also used through persuasive and emotional language in the article 'Pas de deux'.

"Rooster" by Christopher Bruce Essay
"Rooster"
Review by Paris Day
Rooster is a dance piece choreographed by Christopher Bruce. It was originally premiered by the
Ballet du Grand Theatre de Geneve in 1991. It is a contemporary ballet piece performed by ten
dancers to eight of The Rolling Stones' most memorable hits.
Christopher Bruce based the production on the "sexual war" he witnessed growing up in the 1960's.
His intention was to celebrate the music of The Rolling Stones and use the qualities of the songs to
reflect this. The production is set in the 1960's when the rights of males and females began to
equalise.
The lighting during the performance of Rooster is mostly dark and dull. It is very simple with slight

The women were able to take off their red scarves to represent them taking a stand against the men.
They are trying to become independent and unique. The male soloist is wearing a red shirt to show
that he is becoming different to the other males. Red is the inferior colour which could symbolise
him becoming more like the women and less masculine than the other men.
Rooster is performed on an undecorated stage. It is supposed to be presented as a Saturday night at a
club or party. At one point the women have red scarves which they remove from their neck to dance
with. In "Play with Fire" the female soloist also has a red feather bower.
The music throughout the performance is by The Rolling Stones. The first song, "Little Red
Rooster" is very laid back and lazy sounding. It has a slow but consistent tempo throughout the
song. The second song, "Lady Jane" has a very slow tempo. This is possibly because it contains lots
partner work. The third song, "Not Fade Away" is significantly faster than the previous songs. There
is also lots of clapping in time with the music which gives it a kind of celebratory feel. The fourth
song, "As Tears Go By" once again has a slow tempo. It has a very relaxed feel at the same time as
being sad. This assists in developing the choreographers' intent because in this section the female
dancer is being rejected. The fifth song, "Paint it Black" is where the first costume change takes

Memory of a Young Boy in The poem My Papa’s Waltz by...
My Papa's Waltz The poem "My Papa's Waltz" by Theodore Roethke presents a memory from a
young boy waltzing with his father. The waltz is a metaphor that represents the relationship the boy
has with his father. Although the poem may seem like a happy and sweet story of a father and son
dancing in the kitchen there are also some darker underlying tones. The speaker, who is the young
boy, is directing theses words towards his father, but does not actually express them directly to the
father, instead the speaker is just reflecting upon them in his head. In the first stanza of the first line
the reader finds out the father has been drinking, a lot, so much that his son also feels dazed from
the alcohol on the fathers breath. Also the boy, "hung on like death" (3) this is a simile, meaning that
he is hanging on tightly even though it may be hard. In the same line the speaker uses the word
"death" this makes the poem feel a little somber and not very happy. At the end of the stanza in line
four we find out that the boy was having difficulties waltzing with the father, the dancing they were
doing was awkward for the young boy because the father was inebriated and loose from the
drinking. Since the waltz represents the relationship they hold, this could very likely mean that it is
not easy to be with his father every so often. Dancing with the father was not a quiet and graceful
moment, but the young boy seems to accept it. In the second stanza we find out they are doing more

Ballet has always been important throughout history. It was and is still a thrilling way to celebrate
special events and ballet is also a form of expression. Ballet was originated during the 15th century
in the Italian Renaissance Courts. Two very passionate dancers began to fund and help popularize
ballet. Their names were Catherine de Medici and King Louis XIV. Victor Marius Alphonse Petipa
was also a very well known French ballet dancer, teacher and choreographer. He is considered to be
the most influential ballet master in ballet history becuase he internationally popularized dance and
his works made a long lasting impression. Petipa choreographed many famous ballets, and among
them, one of the most famous classical ballet in existence that he choreographed is Swan Lake. The
physicality of the movement made this ballet simply beautiful, but by combining music, costumes
and stage sets, Petipa created an extraordinary experience in the theater. Swan Lake is an elegant
and cherished ballet which tells the story of a prince who stumbles across a beautiful swan named
Odette. She was once a human princess but had been transformed by a heinous sorcerer's curse.
Petipa 's choreography expressed romanticism and emerging symbolism, which revolutionized the
Russian culture. On January 15,1895, the Petipa production in ST. Petersburg was the day ballet
developed from a man 's most magnificant and artistic creations. Petipa simplified the structure of

The Potential for Subversion Denied in Sacre de Printemps
Pina Bausch's Sacre de Printemps is a performance that communicates the story of a ritual and
human sacrifice. The performance begins with a large group of women dancing around a red cloth.
Their movements are frantic, sharp, and aggressive and they both move in unison and break off into
canon. Later on in the piece, a group of men join the women and they dance in separate groups,
come together and form circles, and finally break off into pairs. When the men enter the
performance, a ritual begins that involves the selection of one female for sacrificial purposes. The
men select this woman, she changes into a red dress, and all the members of the cast look on as she
dances until she falls to the ground dead. Throughout the piece, there are instances of subversion
and instances of conformity to traditional gender roles in dance. The performance as a whole at
times challenges traditional expectations of women and at others conforms to them. The movement
and costumes convey initial potential for the subversion of male dominance that ends up confirming
and upholding traditional roles and expectations of gender in dance. The dancers' movements
throughout the performance seem to challenge and uphold gender binaries at the same time. At the
beginning, when only female dancers are present their movements are agentive, strong, quick, and
athletic–characteristics not usually allowed for female dancers. Their movements are similar to the
wild and physical movement of Louise

Someone has to lead in a waltz, which highlights the father's control over the small boy. It isn't
because the boy is being led, but instead the way the father is leading is what makes the dance "not
easy." Roethke uses the verb waltz to impose a sense of joy to the poem, because on literal level the
waltz should be easy and smooth, but for the boy and his father it isn't because apparently, their lives
together aren't easy. Continuing the tone of the first stanza, in the second stanza of the poem the
word romped makes their waltz sound carefree, but they "romped until the pans/ Slid from the
kitchen shelf." Lines 5 and 6 show how their "waltz" is causing a violent disruption in their home
that even the boys' mother could not tolerate. Again with something that sounds as care free as
dancing with your father Roethke implies an undertone of disturbance and violence that is inevitably
taking a toll on their family and home life. Likewise in the third stanza the speaker mentions that the
hand that held his wrist was battered on one knuckle. Undoubtedly, a hand holding a wrist is more
aggressive and dominant than just a hand holding a hand like in a typical waltz, which is suppose to
a smooth and easy glide. The fathers' hand holding the speakers wrist shows both the difference in
the size of their hands and that the speaker waltzes unwillingly. The fact that Roethke chooses the

Dance is a Sport!
I. Introduction:
a) Attention Getter: What is the definition of a sport? A game played with a ball? Is it people in tight
pants running around? How about "an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often

c) Balance is a vital part of dance. Dancers must have strong core muscles. Men need strong
shoulders for lifts, since they must not only support their own body weight but also their partner's.
"Dancers are some of the toughest athletes in the world," claims Dr. McNitt–Gray.
IV. Dance is a competitive nature.
a) Many ask, "How can dance be a sport? You can't judge on time and the scoring is subjective!"
Just like figure skaters, competitive dancers are judged on many criteria: technique, posture, timing,
line, hold, poise, togetherness, expression, presentation, power, and foot or leg action. Dancers have
a lot on their minds while performing. They are constantly asking themselves, am I extending
correctly? Is my technique right? Is my head facing the right direction?
b) Some people think dance involves less endurance than sports like cross–country running.
However, these runners exert forces in only one direction but, as Dr. McNitt–Gray said, in dance,
your hands, legs, and head are exerting forces in different directions all at the same time.

Ballet is one of the most beautiful, graceful dances known to the dancing world. From the tutu to the

With ballet being going from all men to women, it has proven that this dance will continue to
change.
History now:
Ballet has kept its classic and elegant movements the same but the way they see the female dancers
has change the look of it. With ballet there are little dark secrets that are hidden and with it. No
matter how nice the dance is there is going to be women that want look better than the next girl on
the barre. The old look for dancers was to be short and have muscle because being on pointe is very
hard. But now sense society wants girls to be all skinny so ballet with that took it to the extend. And
with this many higher schools require their girls to not be on diets so that their fat they eat will be
burned up by the end of practice. Having the thought many of the parents of young daughters are
brought in to have a talk about how they can portion out their kid and also talk about the training
they need to make a career out of this. But ballet is not all bad it has become to know with the more
modern song, in which mean that ballet has became also fast beat and sassy when it came to the
girls role. No matter what there is there is a fence with ballet that many love it or hate it just depends
what side you're on.

Sensual Dance Exercise
Sensual Dancing will strive to bring out the sexy in you while you are in a fun, safe and caring

expressing it through dance.
Club dancing is social and fun; dancing partners are changed, voluntarily, almost with every song...
so you will soon get to meet new people and even the most timid "wall–flower" will get to dance.
Sensual Dance is the foundation for all exotic dances and includes lap dancing, floor work, wall

Both partners have a great deal to give each other and, as long as they communicate with each other,
theirs will be a stable and happy relationship. Club dancing is social and fun; dancing partners are

are always welcome.
Sometimes, chemistry with the teachers, or good dancing partners are more important than what
others think of the club. There is a lot more that goes on behind the scenes, as dancing partners fall
out, fall over, or sometimes even fall in love. Dancing partners are increasing their chances of
staying life partners and there is a bonus in the bedroom as well. For example, dance partners,

Argumentative Essay: Is Dance A Sport?
Dance; it's beautiful, artistic, strong, and incredibly hard, but is it a sport? Sure, it demonstrates
grace, strength, and athleticism, but some would argue that dance is not a sport because of reasons
varying from not including sporting equipment, to not burning enough calories when performed.
Although it may not involve a ball, dance is a sport, because it requires athleticism, grace, harsh
training, and physical effort.
So what defines a sport? According to Dictionary.com, a sport is "An athletic activity requiring skill
or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature." If I am correct, dance requires skill and
physical prowess, and also has a very competitive nature about it. For many ballerinas, per say,

During dance practice, dancers are said to burn up to 450 calories during one hour long class
(Reason, Paragraph 4). During a kickball game, a player burns around 408 (CalorieLab). Dancers,
as shown by these statistics, burn more than a kickball player, which is a sport that involves a ball.
The physical toll, although many consider little to none, is insane and ends up harsher than an
activity that is considered by many as a sport. According to ballet professional, Jennifer Homans,
"The curious thing about dance now, ballet in particular, is that it has taken the form but left the
feeling. Artists today seem more attached to form than perhaps ever before–wedded to concept,
abstraction, gymnastic moves and external appearance" (Robb, Paragraph 4). Dance, for many, is
starting to become more and more about technique. With that, dance is going to start (and according
to Jennifer, has started) to become more about the hard work, and less about the feeling, leading to a
higher amount of workout in every practice. During one practice, not including the actual dancing, a
ballerina must warm up with a six minute plank, three hundred sit ups, fifty burpees, running laps,
and that's not even all of it. If you're still willing to say that's not enough physical work to be
considered a 'sport', fire away, but proof is against you. The amount of physical endurance and

The History of Ballet
The first experience of watching a ballet, for me or any little girl, can be fascinating and
exhilarating. Wondering how a dancer can be so steady on her toes as she spins in circles and leaps
through the air. Watching a ballet, there is a feeling of wanting to be graceful, as well as the warm
sensation felt by a little girl as she slips into dream land. My mom had taken me to my first ballet
when I was 11 years old. When we returned home home, she signed me up for classes at the local
dance center. The expectations to become a prima ballerina would involve much hard work and
concentration. I knew when I started it would take years of steady practice and commitment.

The history of ballet dates back to the 18th century starting with Baroque dance. Fabritio Caroso da
Sermoneta was a famous Italian Renaissance dancing master. He was born around 1526–1535 and
died around 1605–1620. His dance manual "Ballarino" was published in 1581, with a
subsequent edition, significantly different, Nobiltà de dame, printed in 1600 and again after his
death in 1630. In the 19th century there was the pre–romantic, romantic and the classical ballets.
Anthony Tudor deserves an honorable mention for his choreography and teaching. Pre–romantic
ballet occurred sometime circa ?? up to 1831. The romantic period covered the early to mid 1800's.
This era also introduced the calf–length dress. A few of the great Romantic dancers were Marie

Prof. Catherine Baggs Jazz and Tap Dance
There are various types of dances. However, in many forms, tap and jazz dances are very popular
because they include diversified styles. In the 19th century, these dancers began to form and develop
in the United States. Unlike the other dances, tap dance and jazz dance are blended from different
dance forms. They are considered as the arts, and reflect American cultures as well.
There are some ethnic dances that contribute to the development of tap and jazz dances. Tap dance
came from African and British Isles folk dances. It was combined between African step dancing
with the tap sound of the drums and the British Isles clog. Lihs (2009) stated, "The idea of putting
metal taps on the soles of shoes to accentuate the dancer's steps apparently came from England,
where 19th century step dancers were performing lively dances in wooden clogs" (p. 81). That time,
white people imitated the songs and dances of African–American to make a show called minstrel
and then developed to Vaudeville stage. Beside tap dance, jazz was developing at the same time. It
didn't depend on tapping sounds, but was a new form of dance. Jazz dance was a mixed dance of
different forms, including tap, ballet, African, European and American social dances (Lihs, 2009, p.
84).
As we known, tap dance is considered as a part of jazz. In studying, jazz dance is defined by a big

The actors all sing while dancing, which makes the fact that they always hit their notes perfectly,
even more impressive. The "cats" dance throughout the entire play. All of the dances are
complicated and include difficult turns, leaps, and some acrobatics. The background of the stage is a
3–dimensional setting built to look like a dump. The cats use the "dump" as part of the stage. They
enter and exit through old tires in the floor and jump across the other objects as if they were real cats
playing in a dump.
The play included all types of dancing, including Jazz, Ballet, Modern, Tap, and Lyrical. Most of the
dancing, however, was a form of Jazz. At one point in the play a group of bugs perform a tap dance.
This scene was comical, but the tapping was outstanding. Most of the actors are accomplished
singers, actors, and dancers with a lot of previous experience. Many of them have attended
performing art schools and not only rehearse their main role, but also understudy 2 to 3 other
characters. The actors are all well practiced, which is evident in the quality of the show.
I would strongly recommend this play to anyone who loves music, dance, and/or cats. It is a very
unique play that continues to fill your thoughts for days after you have seen the play. The play is too
long and too complicated to fully appreciate the first time you see it, so I would love to see it again

Dance A Sport
Is Dance Considered a Sport? Three laps around the gym, minute long planks, crunches, sit–ups,
and pushups in a matter of thirty minutes. As a dancer, experiencing and realizing the strength that
needs to be present in order for an athlete to grow is vital. We go through long hours of
choreography sessions, pain and strain on our bodies, and vigorous training. Many people will
disagree on the status of if dance is a sport or not. Both Mary– Elizabeth Esquibel, in her article
"Why Dance Will Always Be a Sport" and the infographic entitled "Is Dance a Sport?" attack this
controversial dilemma. Even though these arguments use different formats, they use rhetoric
similarly.
In Esquibel's article, she battles with the use of ethos. Her article is created on a site called "The
Odyssey", which is a tool for college students to upload essays. Many people would argue the fact
the Mary–Elizabeth isn't credible because she doesn't pertain a profession or have a degree in the
works of which she's talking about such as dance. If she was trying to convince the audience with
her own words, it should not be biased based on her own experiences. The article reads, "I was a
competitive dancer for 13 years and I know the strength and grace that dancers must have while
dealing with the pain and strain that their bodies are going through"( Esquibel 1). This may cause
the readers to feel as if the author, Mary–Esquibel, is trying to make herself sound more–

Comparing the Dance of Life in My Papa’s Waltz and...
Parallels of The Dance of Life in My Papa's Waltz and Saturday Night Fever
Throughout the ages, dance has played an important role in society. It symbolizes tradition, family,
bonding, and entertainment. In almost every decade of the twentieth century, a different style of
dance prevailed. In the 1970s, John Travolta brought disco dancing into the spotlight with his
portrayal of Tony Manero in Saturday Night Fever. Through his depiction of this character, John
Travolta shows the monumental effects of dancing. Literature can also artfully explore the effect of
dance on people. Theodore Roethke's "My Papa's Waltz" dramatizes a special and positive moment
in a boy's life. The author's word choice reflects the significance of this ... Show more content on

As they waltz, the boy "hangs on like death" (536). This imagery and the strong simile may cause
readers to subconsciously decide that the child is in an unhealthy situation. However, the first line of
the next stanza explains that the father and son "romped until the pans slid from the shelf" (536).
Hans Guth and Gabriele Rico agree with the interpretation that I had, in saying that "Romp is
usually an approving word" (Guth and Rico 536). This word expresses a feeling of happy energy,
which reflects how positive the occurrence was for the child.
Dancing, with its often happy energy, can be magical. This magic can alter a relationship between
two people, even if only for the duration of the dance. In Saturday Night Fever, Tony Manero and
his dancing partner, Stephanie Migano had a platonic relationship. This relationship changed into
something else on the dance floor. They bonded; they had a mesmerizing connection to each other.
This is parallel to the situation in "My Papa's Waltz." Readers do not know about the relationship
between this father and son, but he recalls this moment for a reason. That waltz helped them bond.
The last stanza supports the positiveness of this dance as the boy explains that his father "then
waltzed me off to bed still clinging to your shirt" (Roethke 536). The fact that the child clings to his
father suggests that he

Great Depression's Influence on American Vernacular Dance
How did the Great Depression influence the evolution of American vernacular dance?
In the Great Depression, the American dream had become a nightmare. What was once the land of
opportunity was now the land of desperation. The Great Depression was an economic slump in
North America, Europe, and other industrialized areas of the world that began in 1929 and lasted
until about 1939. It was the longest and most severe depression ever experienced by the
industrialized Western world. Nevertheless, it had immense impact on the evolution of American
vernacular dance by bringing jazz music and dance to the masses, raising the nation's spirit through
music and dance.

Yet another famous dance that evolved was the "Big Apple", which originated in a small southern
town. A group circle dance, it gave couples the opportunity to show off, or "shine". It incorporated
swing early swing steps and originally required a "caller". Frankie Manning is accredited to bringing
the Big Apple to New York and popularizing the dance with white culture.
The popularity of these aforementioned dances during the Depression can be easily interpreted as
the psychological comfort it gave of "strength in numbers" and because it was more than just a
dance: it was a unifying experience that provided healing and joy at a time when there was little to
celebrate.
In the late 1930s, Katherine Dunham had one of the most successful dance careers in American and
European theater of the 20th century and has been called the "Matriarch and Queen Mother of Black
Dance", production. One of her early appearances was in Cabin in the Sky, staged by George
Balanchine that ran for 20 weeks in New York, with Dunham in the stunning role of "Georgia
Brown". Another famous role as a seductress during this period was the "Woman with a Cigar" from
her solo role in the revue Shore Excursion. Her sense of rhythm, theater and costuming, as well as
her choreography and dancing, put serious African American vernacular dance on the map once and
for all.

together to formulate an appropriate design for the hotel. The hotel specifications were set and the
project to build the hotel was prepared using standard building codes set by the administration of
Kansas City, Missouri. It was not until the spring of 1978 that the construction for the Hyatt
Regency Hotel finally began. On July 1980, construction of the hotel was finally finished and the
hotel was officially ready and open for business. The hotel soon became famous for its unique and
spacious architecture within. One of the most interesting features of the Hyatt was its lobby. This
lobby was made up of an atrium that incorporated three skywalks that hung from the ceiling of the
hotel. The skywalks were located on the second, third, and fourth floor, and each connected one side
of the hotel to the other. The second skywalk rested under the fourth skywalk while the third was

West Side Story The Musical Essay
West Side Story The Musical
*No Works Cited
West Side Story is one of the most influential musicals of all time. It's integration of dance and song
into the plot was very innovative, because even though it had been done before, it had never been
done this well. Jerome Robbins had thought of an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet to a Broadway
musical in 1949. He began discussions with librettist Arthur Laurents and composer Leonard
Bernstein of a musical called East Side Story, with a plot concentrating on a Catholic girl and a
Jewish boy. Other projects forced the work aside for six years, and when they returned to it, times
had changed. Their idea became West Side Story, (another early title was Gangway!) and the

The Latin–American rhythms gave Bernstein a good musical base to start from, and the whole score
benefited from a jazzy Manhattan feel, which had been inherited from Gershwin, as well as
Copland's romantic Americana feel. Robbins choice of a cast was very meticulously done. He
wanted a real feeling that had never been reached before in Musical history. He wanted actors that
were not well known, and that would get his theme of reality across to the audience. During
rehearsals he actually separated the Jets and the Sharks and didn't allow them to socialize or even
talk to one another. He also didn't allow the actress playing Anybodys to eat lunch with anyone at
all. The show opened on Broadway on September 16, 1957. At first, the critics were not able to fully
appreciate the magnitude of the achievement, but one critic, Brooks Atkinson wrote that the ballets
"convey the things that Laurents is inhibited from saying because the characters are so inarticulate."
This was done intentionally as a part of the realistic approach to the musical. By making the
teenagers inarticulate, they were forced to communicate at an emotional level that almost lended
itself to an impressionistic approach. One innovation of West Side Story was that there really wasn't
a dance chorus. Each dancer was assigned a specific character to play, and all of them sang, danced,
and spoke. Robbins knew that by

Stereotypes In Lap Dance
In mainstream media and film, strippers are given a very narrow representation when they're even
included in a storyline at all: The women and men who make up the sex industry tend to be painted
with a broad brush, being portrayed as morally corrupt. It's implied that they either joined the
industry because of their negative traits, or that those traits were developed during their time
working in it. This harmful stereotype is pretty consistently perpetuated, and done so through both
male and female characters. The film being used here to provide a few examples of this stereotype is

Fifth through eighth beat– repeat previous four mirroring the direction, leader does what the
follower did and vice versa
Now let's find the center of mass in the x direction at the pause in this step.
The equation for the center of mass in the x direction is xcm=(Mx1+ mx2)/(M+m) where M is the
mass of the leader, m is the mass of the follower, x1 is the position of the leader, and x2 is the
position of the follower.
Turn
The turn starts off with the follower and the leader side by side and hands crossed. The leader pulls
the follower so that she is facing him.
Let us find the amount of work done by the system when defining the dancers as particles. The
diameter will be defined as the length from the outer edge of one dancer to the outer edge of the
other dancer. M will stand for the leader's mass and m will be used for the follower's mass. w will be
the angular velocity, I will be the moment of inertia, and r is radius.
To find the work you must subtract the intial kinetic energy from the final kinetic energy. The
equation for rotational kinetic energy is: Iw2. The equation for the moment of inertia for particles is:
(M+m)r2
So calculating this gives you:{[(M+m)final radius2]final w2}–

across the world. While their performances have ranged over a wide array of subject matters, the

The theatrical decision to remind the audience that the person next to them is measuring time
differently than they are, was a very smart decision because it added an extra level of interpretation
of the piece. At the end of this experiment, Mr. Jones then reminded the audience that there was a
total of 70 minutes of performance. When the show actually began, it started with a digital green
timer on the wall counting by the second, accompanied by Mr. Jones sitting at a desk with a desk
lamp. He began to read a story as a single dancer in a pink long sleeved top danced beside him. This
dancer was definitely the most memorable mover of the company due to her exquisite fluidity
within her movement, as well as the desirable synchronization between her movements and the
words of Mr. Jones's voice throughout the piece. As the performance carried on, the other dancers
performed various solos, duets, and quartets, of modern movement while Mr. Jones's stories carried
on.
There were moments where it was easy to interpret Mr. Jones's stories and see the correlation
between the story and the movement, but there were also moments when it was easy to get lost in
the movement and forget the story was even taking place. Although it could be frustrating at times
to suddenly realize the story had not registered due to the captivation of the dancers, it was still nice
to watch the dancers perform to spoken word. There is a lot of power in words, not only in what

Essay on Is Dance a Sport?
Is Dance a Sport? The endless debate between the dance world and the sports world is trying to
decide where dance fits in. Dance does require athletic ability for the technique needed. However,
dance does not fit completely into what is typically considered a sport. Some people say it cannot be
called a sport and that it is an art instead. In this argument, it is important to distinguish what type of
dancing is being discussed, as there are many different types of varying levels of difficulty. Paige
Abrams puts it this way: "You can dance at a club for fun, as a hobby, as a serious passion, or you
can dance as a career" (2). Just as a person can play catch, which has some of the basic components
as baseball, it is not considered a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When using this definition of what a sport is, there is no doubt that dance fills these requirements.
The first requirement is that it uses physical exertion and dance is extremely physically demanding.
The amount of athleticism required to perform many of the dance moves is astounding. According
to an article on aarp.com "a workout that involves jumping and turning repeatedly for over ten
minutes creates a workout similar to running a mile" (qtd in Rice 1). Most dancers don't just dance
for ten minutes: Paige Abrams states, "Teams practice for more than twenty hours a week" (2) and
Aubree James says, "Many competitive dancers practice for five hours a day to perfect their
technique, while some rep hockey teams [only] practice five hours a week" (2). In addition to the
actual dancing at practices, dance requires a lot of additional conditioning. Lauren Allaire said, "We
condition every rehearsal, which includes a six minute plank, three hundred sit ups, fifty burpees,
we run laps, and a lot more" (qtd in Abrams 2) In my own experience, just conditioning in class still
isn't enough to keep a dancers body as strong or as flexible as it needs to be. Staying in shape
requires stretching and working out every night. The next requirement needed to be a sport is skill.
Not everyone can start dancing and automatically be great at it. Aubree James says that "if you were

Quinceanera Reaction Paper
As she gracefully walked down the aisle dressed in a gold tulle ball gown, her mother shed tears of
joy and her father beamed. This was their baby all grown up. September 24, 2016 was the day
Sophia Brooke Kahl transitioned from a girl to a young woman; it was her Quinceañera. Similar to a
"Sweet 16" party in American culture, a Quinceañera is a Latin American celebration of a girl's
fifteenth birthday and her transition into womanhood. During the course of the day, the Quinceanera
(Birthday Girl) renews her baptismal promises in front of her family and community, and attends a
large party in her honor. I attended Sophia's Quinceañera as a guest of the family to share in their
celebration, serving both as choreographer for the attendant's ... Show more content on

A white chair was pulled out into the middle of the dance floor, and everyone gathered around her as
Sophia and her father performed the traditional Shoe Ceremony. The Shoe Ceremony consists of the
Quinceanera's father taking off her flat shoes and replacing them with high heels. The heels signify
her growing up from a child; from needing help to walk to being able to stand on her own as a
young woman. Sophia's father proceeded to remove her black, Converse tennis shoes and replace
them with 3" high heels, bedazzled with rhinestones. She then walked into her father's open arms,
and shared her first dance as a young woman with him. In doing so, Sophia signified that the most
important man in her life, other than God, was always going to be her father. As a part of this first
dance, both of her Grandfathers took a turn dancing with her, where they expressed their love for the
newest young woman in their family. Watching them dance was my favorite part of the entire
evening. It reminded me of dancing with my own great–grandfather (now deceased) at my uncle's
wedding. It was beautiful seeing how proud her grandfathers were of Sophia and admiring the
person she had become. She was no longer just a little girl; she was a young

Tricia swung the door open amid this cliffhanger and I begged for more information. As it
happened, Tricia had moved our friends to the other side of the bar to leave the two of us alone,
while still maintaining a clear view of our the drama unfolding between myself and Mr. Wonderful.
Love was in the air and it was hijacking my soul. My heart had become its own planet spinning on
its axis too fast for me to feel my the floor below me and I still don't know how I kept my balance,
especially to the point of dancing the night away with the girls, as Mr. Wonderful watched.
Something was missing; since moving back to Southern California every attempt made to court me

Knowing he saw this outing as a date, I attempted to get to know him while letting him pursue me. I
told him I was under the influence of aliens, not just the drinks he bought for me. I notice a young
woman with her jacket tied to her waist. There was a bright yellow design on the jacket appearing
on her behind. I mentioned the apparition to Mr.Wonderful and insisted that he look at her butt. He
refused, and this was curious. I persisted until he said, "I am here with you, I am not going to look at
another woman." His words seared into my heart like a flame igniting a rapid pace and blood flow
that surged through my entire body. Despite this magical feeling, I was determined not to get swept
away and over a cliff. I took "selfies" and sent them to Finesse since she couldn't be there with all of
us. I took a photo of me and Mr. Wonderful. The expression on his face, the childlike hope on
Christmas morning, spoke volumes. I kicked off one of my Birkenstocks so I could show him that
even my feet had wrinkles of age. He stroked the back of my calf while looking not at my foot but
into my eyes. This was the moment, in unison with many moments, I was sure my body and my
heart were in full agreement. This was also the time of the night, that I was certain he was touching
me not by accident– Galaxy was not on my lap and Mr. Wonderful had not consumed any alcohol.

Dance Marathon

  • 1. Dance Marathon Last One Standing Various painters use their works of art as a representation of feelings. They include symbols, figures, and expression to reveal their emotions through the form of art. Philip Evergood's painting Dance Marathon illustrates the desperate times surrounding the Great Depression. In the scene, dancers compete for a cash prize as they see who can dance the longest. He portrays the cruelty of the time through this vulgar setting. The painting easily captures the viewer's attention mostly from the use of color, figure, spatial effects, and other techniques created by the artist. The size of Dance Marathon is not oversized, but it is relatively large and invites the spectator to look at the painting. The perspective ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Red appears to dominate the painting and serves as an eye–catching color. The use of intensely saturated colors draws the attention to the front couple. Additionally, the red color plays with the mind of the onlooker without them thinking about it. It suggests deep passion, anger, and struggle. The artist intends to relay his feelings about the event to the viewer. His outlook consists of disgust towards the great depression that leaves many taken advantage of due to desperation. The couple positioned in the front appears very large to make the painting 3–D. The relative size of the dancers drastically shifts to create a window into the painting. The viewer can imagine being a part of the event and watching the poverty–stricken dancers. The angle that the painting is at appears to be almost a bird's eye view. This adds to the effect of feeling as part of the audience. Spatial features are also added with overlap making figures look even more distant. Almost everything can be seen all the way to the back of the painting as the lighting in Dance Marathon spreads equally throughout the painting. Many lamps hang from the ceiling to give it a sense of many sources of light and to distribute the light evenly. Dance Marathon as the title brings clear understanding to the artwork. Marathon means an event that lasts longer than normal and requires great endurance. The audience recognizes that the people struggle to move because ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Hula Dancers Tamar Cohen Prof. Sandra Chatterjee WAC 47 29 May 2007 Like They Do in Honolulu The experience of the hula movement session as well as hula itself is difficult to write about and analyze at length for a number of reasons. To start, hula is relatively simple, not to learn, but as a social wonder and characteristic of Hawaii. Although the dance possesses religious undertones – the documentary mentioned that sincere hula dancers appeal to the Hawaiian gods to assist them – it certainly isn 't driven by an overbearing religious impulse. Furthermore, although hula and its sagas are transmitted from generation to generation as oral traditions (211), the traditions are not sustained out of fear, intimidation, or social status. On the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Hula dances are storytelling dances, and many stories are passed from generation to generation; the boundary lines of history and legend are thus blurred and each story becomes cherished as a window into the past. My suspicion of hula 's traditional roots was certainly confirmed. As Stiller 's thesis contends, the hula tradition has been largely preserved and advanced due to the efforts of women in both the foreground – as soloists and desirable performers – and in the behind–the–scenes, or what Stiller prefers to call the "underground, what happens backstage during teaching and preparation (210–11). Throughout the twentieth century, the "staging [and] continuity of the performance tradition" has been promoted and shaped by "the hands of women" (211). This is a fascinating social observation, surprisingly devoid of any overt value judgments from Stiller 's end. Tourism and commercialism doubtless played a role in hula 's development. I was surprised that Noelani – a Hawaiian herself – taught us a hula dance accompanied by an English song! Furthermore, the song 's lyrics presumptuously, albeit playfully, depicted the residents of Honolulu as the "Other" with repetitive use of the word "they." Noelani explained that tourists encouraged the hula to develop in certain ways rather than ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 3. My Papa's Waltz by Theodore Roethke Essay Any interpretation of this story is due to the reader's personal emotions and feelings toward his or her own Papa. This story can be either a dance between him and his father, thus bringing them closer together. However, there is a darker side of this poem, on this side it is an unsettling fight between a boy and his drunken father and all the intimacy of the dance does not make an impression on the reader and is overshadowed by the anger they feel. Theodore Roethke manipulates our emotions in this poem using literary convention. A Waltz is a lighthearted, easily accessible dance. In a waltz, a couple sways back and forth as they go in a circle. Our emotions of this poem seem to follow this same path as we can see comforting and ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The whiskey on his breath is not necessarily negative due to the factors of the working class culture in 1948 when this poem was published. To add on to this view that he is a hard worker with knuckles that are battered and a "palm caked hard by dirt," the man is a grafter who works long and hard for the family he loves. The overwhelming joy he feels when he sees his son makes him want to dance in a waltz. Due to him and his father's height difference, the son's ear scraped on the father's belt buckle. The longer they dance the happier he get. This causes him to become more and more clumsier due to his drunken state, and it starts to become too much for the son the handle and begins to become very rough. This dance becomes so rough that the dancing causes the pans to fall to the floor and causes the son to, "hang on like death" to his father. The beating on his son's head is part of joy at the music he hears in his head. The mother remains an outsider to what is actually happening in front of her and is naturally unhappy due to the random disturbance the father makes. After the dance is over the son goes to bed and clings to his father's shirt in love and admiration for him. The negative side of this poem is an abusive drunken father. This is prevalent to his father's obvious drunkenness. This is tied together with the image of a knuckle, beating, belt buckle, and negativity in the word "death." These ... • 4. Choreographer Busby Berkeley’s Contributions to Film... Choreographer Busby Berkeley's Contributions to Film Berkeley's creations were not meant to focus on dance. He envisioned an overall moving pattern, which he created by using moving bodies. He made the art of choreography a technique of design and visual mathematics, and combined this with his knowledge of film to bring his vision to life on the big screen. The skill of this multi–talented man brought Hollywood musicals to their full potential, creating a high demand for dance in films. William Berkeley Enos was born November 29, 1895, in Los Angeles. He began his career as a choreographer in 1918 as a lieutenant in the army. Conducting and directing parades. He gained the ability to work with large masses of moving bodies to ... It was not the individual dancers, but his quick editing cuts, multiple angles and shots, and special effects that created the brilliant movement. Possibly Berkeley's most memorable filming technique is his use of overhead angles. He even would drill holes in the ceilings of the studios so that he could make these shots possible. That is how he created his kaleidoscopic patterns that he was well known for. One of Berkeley's greatest displays of choreography is the production of 42nd Street. With the popularity of musical films decreasing around 1932, Warner Brothers decided they needed a real spectacle to save the genre. They brought in Busby Berkeley to create it. It was a smash hit, and so Berkeley was given an impressive seven year contract. Between 1933 to 1937, Berkeley created the dance sequences for almost every successful musical Warner Bros. released. Some of his most well known productions were Footlight Parade(1933), Dames(1934), his extravagant use of 150 dancers in "Lullaby of Broadway" in the film Gold Diggers of 1935, Babes in Arms(1939), and his last film Take Me Out to the Ballgame(1949). The Rebound Effect For The Disabled Dancer The Rebound Effect For The Disabled Dancer While Rebound is essential to an day to day life, a rebound can happen anytime, during a performance or just by being sick and getting up the next day perfectly fine. Dancers have a step called rebound and it helps them push energy out their bodies to move fluidly to another spot in the space. I have also discovered I had a rebound effect in life due to Crohn 's Disease and I had a major surgery and came back four months later dancing. As a human being you think of life as being very delicate but at the same time doing everything you can to live life to the fullest. So my idea came from a place of healing and recovery sense. This past year has been very challenging since being diagnosed with Crohn's. And very difficult to find myself back in effect, of dancing everyday, but now I feel like I am really having a rebound effect. I decide then this paper could be a way to open up and find some sources to deal with my rebound and to know that I am not alone in this situation. First I wanted to know the definition of a rebound in all different ways medical and the dance definition. As dancers every moment is special because anything can happen and stop our dancing career. Love and passion fill the air as she moves in such a way that is almost magical. The romantics sought out for a way to break free from their classical ancestors and achieved a great accomplishment than anyone had ever thought possible. The dance that I viewed was called "She without arm, he without leg, Hand in Hand". The dance was not only informative, but it was enlightening to watch. I liked the dance piece because the dancers were limited physically in their bodies, but their dancing was beyond limited and astounding. At first, I was a bit doubtful and sceptical before watching the dance because I thought the dancers were going to perform with very minimal and stiff movements. But to my surprise, the dancers moved gracefully on stage. The two dancers used quite a lot of space. The dancers used all levels of space from low to high. For example, the dancers executed amazing leaps, jumps and lifts in their performance that represented as high levels of space. The dancers movements were grand; however, they were also whimsical, sharp, circular, and clean. The dancers utilized most parts of the stage. The pattern of the space that performers used was more curved than linear. There were two dancers in this piece, the male dancer that had only one leg and the female dancer that had only one arm. The genre of dance that was performed was a ballet; though, in my observations the dance seemed to be more contemporary than ballet. For instance, the tempo of the dance was slower and had less rhythm than most classical ballets I've observed. Also, there were a couple of pauses and rests during the performance. The dance ... That being said, people and judges in every state of the union have a different interpretation of what these freedoms are. This is the case for the strip club owners in the state of Kentucky, although they are not the only state to be under fire from the city governments. Imagine being the owner of a business and finding out that you can no longer provide all the services your customers are demanding of you. How would you or I go about circumventing our current situation? One important opinion that many club owners voice is that with the decrease in club hours of operation and with the addition of clothing, clubs will bring in less revenue. This is important because now the city takes a hit in the amount of taxes that it garners from the club. Taxes that can help go to better schools possibly or an added boost to an over strapped budget, will no longer find the coffers of city government. Obviously the goal in mind for the political leaders is to keep their taxpayers and voters happy for the next election period, but is taking away from the city's income the right avenue to take? Billy's initial glimpse of the ballet class through the door, and the way he enters the class hesitantly symbolises a new world opening up to Billy. Billy's determination is one the key elements involved in his eventual transition into a different world. Realising that his father would not allow him to pursue ballet, he attends lessons in secret and practices extensively in his bedroom, the bathroom and wherever else he can have some privacy. The door motif is again prominent with Billy's father physically holding Billy back from pursing his pathway into a new world. For Billy, dance becomes a means of escape from his surroundings, a refuge, a form of self–expression and, ultimately, a way out of his closed community and into the larger world. Christopher Bruce based the production on the "sexual war" he witnessed growing up in the 1960's. His intention was to celebrate the music of The Rolling Stones and use the qualities of the songs to reflect this. It is supposed to be presented as a Saturday night at a club or party. At one point the women have red scarves which they remove from their neck to dance with. In "Play with Fire" the female soloist also has a red feather bower. The music throughout the performance is by The Rolling Stones. The first song, "Little Red Rooster" is very laid back and lazy sounding. It has a slow but consistent tempo throughout the song. The second song, "Lady Jane" has a very slow tempo. This is possibly because it contains lots partner work. The third song, "Not Fade Away" is significantly faster than the previous songs. There is also lots of clapping in time with the music which gives it a kind of celebratory feel. The fourth song, "As Tears Go By" once again has a slow tempo. • 12. Memory of a Young Boy in The poem My Papa’s Waltz by... My Papa's Waltz The poem "My Papa's Waltz" by Theodore Roethke presents a memory from a young boy waltzing with his father. The waltz is a metaphor that represents the relationship the boy has with his father. Although the poem may seem like a happy and sweet story of a father and son dancing in the kitchen there are also some darker underlying tones. The speaker, who is the young boy, is directing theses words towards his father, but does not actually express them directly to the father, instead the speaker is just reflecting upon them in his head. In the first stanza of the first line the reader finds out the father has been drinking, a lot, so much that his son also feels dazed from the alcohol on the fathers breath. Also the boy, "hung on like death" (3) this is a simile, meaning that he is hanging on tightly even though it may be hard. In the same line the speaker uses the word "death" this makes the poem feel a little somber and not very happy. At the end of the stanza in line four we find out that the boy was having difficulties waltzing with the father, the dancing they were doing was awkward for the young boy because the father was inebriated and loose from the drinking. Since the waltz represents the relationship they hold, this could very likely mean that it is not easy to be with his father every so often. Dancing with the father was not a quiet and graceful moment, but the young boy seems to accept it. In the second stanza we find out they are doing more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The performance begins with a large group of women dancing around a red cloth. Their movements are frantic, sharp, and aggressive and they both move in unison and break off into canon. Later on in the piece, a group of men join the women and they dance in separate groups, come together and form circles, and finally break off into pairs. When the men enter the performance, a ritual begins that involves the selection of one female for sacrificial purposes. The men select this woman, she changes into a red dress, and all the members of the cast look on as she dances until she falls to the ground dead. Throughout the piece, there are instances of subversion and instances of conformity to traditional gender roles in dance. The performance as a whole at times challenges traditional expectations of women and at others conforms to them. The movement and costumes convey initial potential for the subversion of male dominance that ends up confirming and upholding traditional roles and expectations of gender in dance. The dancers' movements throughout the performance seem to challenge and uphold gender binaries at the same time. Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Someone has to lead in a waltz, which highlights the father's control over the small boy. It isn't because the boy is being led, but instead the way the father is leading is what makes the dance "not easy." Roethke uses the verb waltz to impose a sense of joy to the poem, because on literal level the waltz should be easy and smooth, but for the boy and his father it isn't because apparently, their lives together aren't easy. Continuing the tone of the first stanza, in the second stanza of the poem the word romped makes their waltz sound carefree, but they "romped until the pans/ Slid from the kitchen shelf." Lines 5 and 6 show how their "waltz" is causing a violent disruption in their home that even the boys' mother could not tolerate. Again with something that sounds as care free as dancing with your father Roethke implies an undertone of disturbance and violence that is inevitably taking a toll on their family and home life. Likewise in the third stanza the speaker mentions that the hand that held his wrist was battered on one knuckle. Undoubtedly, a hand holding a wrist is more aggressive and dominant than just a hand holding a hand like in a typical waltz, which is suppose to a smooth and easy glide. Is my head facing the right direction? b) Some people think dance involves less endurance than sports like cross–country running. During a kickball game, a player burns around 408 (CalorieLab). Dancers, as shown by these statistics, burn more than a kickball player, which is a sport that involves a ball. The physical toll, although many consider little to none, is insane and ends up harsher than an activity that is considered by many as a sport. According to ballet professional, Jennifer Homans, "The curious thing about dance now, ballet in particular, is that it has taken the form but left the feeling. Artists today seem more attached to form than perhaps ever before–wedded to concept, abstraction, gymnastic moves and external appearance" (Robb, Paragraph 4). Dance, for many, is starting to become more and more about technique. With that, dance is going to start (and according to Jennifer, has started) to become more about the hard work, and less about the feeling, leading to a higher amount of workout in every practice. During one practice, not including the actual dancing, a ballerina must warm up with a six minute plank, three hundred sit ups, fifty burpees, running laps, and that's not even all of it. If you're still willing to say that's not enough physical work to be considered a 'sport', fire away, but proof is against you. The amount of physical endurance and physical ... Wondering how a dancer can be so steady on her toes as she spins in circles and leaps through the air. Watching a ballet, there is a feeling of wanting to be graceful, as well as the warm sensation felt by a little girl as she slips into dream land. My mom had taken me to my first ballet when I was 11 years old. When we returned home home, she signed me up for classes at the local dance center. • 24. Notes On Dance Appreciation Da 101-01 MY THINH CAO November 7, 2014 Dance Appreciation DA–101–01 Reading Response 3 Prof. Catherine Baggs Jazz and Tap Dance There are various types of dances. However, in many forms, tap and jazz dances are very popular because they include diversified styles. In the 19th century, these dancers began to form and develop in the United States. Unlike the other dances, tap dance and jazz dance are blended from different dance forms. They are considered as the arts, and reflect American cultures as well. There are some ethnic dances that contribute to the development of tap and jazz dances. Tap dance came from African and British Isles folk dances. It was combined between African step dancing with the tap sound of the drums and the British Isles clog. Lihs (2009) stated, "The idea of putting metal taps on the soles of shoes to accentuate the dancer's steps apparently came from England, where 19th century step dancers were performing lively dances in wooden clogs" (p. 81). That time, white people imitated the songs and dances of African–American to make a show called minstrel and then developed to Vaudeville stage. Beside tap dance, jazz was developing at the same time. It didn't depend on tapping sounds, but was a new form of dance. Jazz dance was a mixed dance of different forms, including tap, ballet, African, European and American social dances (Lihs, 2009, p. 84). As we known, tap dance is considered as a part of jazz. In studying, jazz dance is defined by a big tree with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

They enter and exit through old tires in the floor and jump across the other objects as if they were real cats playing in a dump. The play included all types of dancing, including Jazz, Ballet, Modern, Tap, and Lyrical. Most of the dancing, however, was a form of Jazz. At one point in the play a group of bugs perform a tap dance. This scene was comical, but the tapping was outstanding. Most of the actors are accomplished singers, actors, and dancers with a lot of previous experience. Many of them have attended performing art schools and not only rehearse their main role, but also understudy 2 to 3 other characters. The actors are all well practiced, which is evident in the quality of the show. I would strongly recommend this play to anyone who loves music, dance, and/or cats. As a dancer, experiencing and realizing the strength that needs to be present in order for an athlete to grow is vital. We go through long hours of choreography sessions, pain and strain on our bodies, and vigorous training. Many people will disagree on the status of if dance is a sport or not. Both Mary– Elizabeth Esquibel, in her article "Why Dance Will Always Be a Sport" and the infographic entitled "Is Dance a Sport?" attack this controversial dilemma. Even though these arguments use different formats, they use rhetoric similarly. In Esquibel's article, she battles with the use of ethos. Her article is created on a site called "The Odyssey", which is a tool for college students to upload essays. Many people would argue the fact the Mary–Elizabeth isn't credible because she doesn't pertain a profession or have a degree in the works of which she's talking about such as dance. If she was trying to convince the audience with her own words, it should not be biased based on her own experiences. The article reads, "I was a competitive dancer for 13 years and I know the strength and grace that dancers must have while dealing with the pain and strain that their bodies are going through"( Esquibel 1). Parallels of The Dance of Life in My Papa's Waltz and Saturday Night Fever Throughout the ages, dance has played an important role in society. It symbolizes tradition, family, bonding, and entertainment. In almost every decade of the twentieth century, a different style of dance prevailed. In the 1970s, John Travolta brought disco dancing into the spotlight with his portrayal of Tony Manero in Saturday Night Fever. Through his depiction of this character, John Travolta shows the monumental effects of dancing. Literature can also artfully explore the effect of dance on people. As they waltz, the boy "hangs on like death" (536). This imagery and the strong simile may cause readers to subconsciously decide that the child is in an unhealthy situation. However, the first line of the next stanza explains that the father and son "romped until the pans slid from the shelf" (536). Hans Guth and Gabriele Rico agree with the interpretation that I had, in saying that "Romp is usually an approving word" (Guth and Rico 536). This word expresses a feeling of happy energy, which reflects how positive the occurrence was for the child. Dancing, with its often happy energy, can be magical. This magic can alter a relationship between two people, even if only for the duration of the dance. In Saturday Night Fever, Tony Manero and his dancing partner, Stephanie Migano had a platonic relationship. This relationship changed into something else on the dance floor. They bonded; they had a mesmerizing connection to each other. This is parallel to the situation in "My Papa's Waltz." Readers do not know about the relationship between this father and son, but he recalls this moment for a reason. That waltz helped them bond. The last stanza supports the positiveness of this dance as the boy explains that his father "then waltzed me off to bed still clinging to your shirt" (Roethke 536). It was the longest and most severe depression ever experienced by the industrialized Western world. Yet another famous dance that evolved was the "Big Apple", which originated in a small southern town. A group circle dance, it gave couples the opportunity to show off, or "shine". It incorporated swing early swing steps and originally required a "caller". Frankie Manning is accredited to bringing the Big Apple to New York and popularizing the dance with white culture. The popularity of these aforementioned dances during the Depression can be easily interpreted as the psychological comfort it gave of "strength in numbers" and because it was more than just a dance: it was a unifying experience that provided healing and joy at a time when there was little to celebrate. In the late 1930s, Katherine Dunham had one of the most successful dance careers in American and European theater of the 20th century and has been called the "Matriarch and Queen Mother of Black Dance", production. One of her early appearances was in Cabin in the Sky, staged by George Balanchine that ran for 20 weeks in New York, with Dunham in the stunning role of "Georgia Brown". It's integration of dance and song into the plot was very innovative, because even though it had been done before, it had never been done this well. Jerome Robbins had thought of an adaptation of Romeo and Juliet to a Broadway musical in 1949. He began discussions with librettist Arthur Laurents and composer Leonard Bernstein of a musical called East Side Story, with a plot concentrating on a Catholic girl and a Jewish boy. Other projects forced the work aside for six years, and when they returned to it, times had changed. Their idea became West Side Story, (another early title was Gangway!) and the Montague–Capulet ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Latin–American rhythms gave Bernstein a good musical base to start from, and the whole score benefited from a jazzy Manhattan feel, which had been inherited from Gershwin, as well as Copland's romantic Americana feel. Robbins choice of a cast was very meticulously done. He wanted a real feeling that had never been reached before in Musical history. He wanted actors that were not well known, and that would get his theme of reality across to the audience. During rehearsals he actually separated the Jets and the Sharks and didn't allow them to socialize or even talk to one another. He also didn't allow the actress playing Anybodys to eat lunch with anyone at all. The show opened on Broadway on September 16, 1957. At first, the critics were not able to fully appreciate the magnitude of the achievement, but one critic, Brooks Atkinson wrote that the ballets "convey the things that Laurents is inhibited from saying because the characters are so inarticulate." This was done intentionally as a part of the realistic approach to the musical. By making the teenagers inarticulate, they were forced to communicate at an emotional level that almost lended itself to an impressionistic approach. One innovation of West Side Story was that there really wasn't a dance chorus. Each dancer was assigned a specific character to play, and all of them sang, danced, and spoke. Robbins knew that by ... Stereotypes In Lap Dance In mainstream media and film, strippers are given a very narrow representation when they're even included in a storyline at all: The women and men who make up the sex industry tend to be painted with a broad brush, being portrayed as morally corrupt. Dance does require athletic ability for the technique needed. However, dance does not fit completely into what is typically considered a sport. Some people say it cannot be called a sport and that it is an art instead. In this argument, it is important to distinguish what type of dancing is being discussed, as there are many different types of varying levels of difficulty. The first requirement is that it uses physical exertion and dance is extremely physically demanding. The amount of athleticism required to perform many of the dance moves is astounding. According to an article on aarp.com "a workout that involves jumping and turning repeatedly for over ten minutes creates a workout similar to running a mile" (qtd in Rice 1). Most dancers don't just dance for ten minutes: Paige Abrams states, "Teams practice for more than twenty hours a week" (2) and Aubree James says, "Many competitive dancers practice for five hours a day to perfect their technique, while some rep hockey teams [only] practice five hours a week" (2). In addition to the actual dancing at practices, dance requires a lot of additional conditioning. Lauren Allaire said, "We condition every rehearsal, which includes a six minute plank, three hundred sit ups, fifty burpees, we run laps, and a lot more" (qtd in Abrams 2) In my own experience, just conditioning in class still isn't enough to keep a dancers body as strong or as flexible as it needs to be. Staying in shape requires stretching and working out every night. The next requirement needed to be a sport is skill. Not everyone can start dancing and automatically be great at it.
