Bowers Museum Analysis
Davis, E Bowers Museum Review Located in Santa Ana, CA the Bowers Museum can be seen in a similar light as the art work "Levitated Mass"
by Michael Heizer. I say this because the Bowers is located in a not so nice part of Santa Ana and can be looked at as a beacon. The Architecture is
set in the style of a mission with Stuccoed Walls, Terra Cotta Roof Tiles, Cement Copying and Curvilinear Gables. As you enter the bowers Museum
you walk up on a long dramatic brick walkway that takes you under a dramatic Curvilinear Gable delivering you to the entrance as you pass through a
lush green lawn and a courtyard that makes you... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Through this exhibit you start to think of the medium Pelt uses and how hard it is as you look at the pieces for their sheer stunning beauty! The
one piece that stood out for me over the rest was the "Agate Rhyton". This piece is carved into a drinking vessel in the shape of an Impala (I think)
with its head slightly raised up with a gold piece as it nose. As you leave the Gemstone Carvings you walk into a rotunda that has Pacific Islander
carved bouts and large carved log drums. From here you enter the exhibit Ancient Arts of China. This exhibit allows you to look at a history of
Chinese Art dating as far back as 5000 years. starting with painted large ceramic pots from the Neolithic period. This exhibit will take you on a
journey with items on display like sculpture of horse made during the Han Dynasty, to silk robes, ivory carvings and special items made for the
afterlife. A stark contrast to the Ancient Arts of China exhibit, you walk into my favorite exhibit which is the Spirits and Headhunters: Art of the
Pacific Islands. To set the mood the exhibit is

Ultimate Art Exhibit, a Journey through Time Essay
There are many works of art and many different possible locations that could be considered when trying to create would be classified as "The
Ultimate Art Exhibit". For my project, I have decided to place my Art exhibit inside of Rome, Italy for many reasons. One of which is that Rome is
known to have very beautiful building architecture and is known for great masterpieces such as The Pantheon and also the Colosseum. Due to the
extremely high number of tourists that Rome gets year–round, if an art gallery that yielded extremely high expectations were placed here then it
would receive a very high volume of people daily. So due to this and its culture I decided that Rome may be one of the better choices so the art exhibit
will be placed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Each of the halls that contains a different piece will have its own theme and design to match the art that is used as a centerpiece inside of it. Each
hall will also contain elements to bring out the true nature of the art contained inside and to demonstrate a sense of understanding for the piece itself
and the time is was being created in. If not understanding, then it would produce a sense of awe in many of the viewers in the exhibit. The reason
behind this theme was simply to be able to dedicate a gallery to each of the individual masterpieces and put in some extra artistic touches to make
things far greater. It may be different than a standard Museum or art exhibit, but these are some of the greatest achievements in historical art and they
need a place that can show their significance.
The first hall will contain Egyptian Art, and in particular Narmer's Palette. Narmer's Palette was a symbol of art that displayed a scene of the
unification between the upper and lower divisions of Egypt (Kinnaer) and was the easiest example of canonized art (Kinnaer) that we currently
have. I chose this piece because not only is it a symbol of Egyptian unification but because of its significance in the art world. Narmer was displayed
wearing both crowns and standing in a Victory pose which was used to show his power over his enemies. This pose was adopted by other styles of art
to show power

Advantage Of Art Festivals
"The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls." By Pablo Picasso. Over the years, some have had the privilege of appreciating art
by visiting different art galleries and institutions. In recent times, however, art festivals have become a popular event where everyone can participate,
explore and enjoy different art works. Art festivals are events that feature different combinations of artworks using various mediums by several artists.
These festivals are usually held at a public setting and they celebrate both the art and the artists. It is important to have such festivals since they benefit
the artists, the public and the general audience of art. Art festivals can be an excellent advantage for indigenous artists who are trying to gain
recognition and enumerating the art pieces they produce. Throughout the years, upcoming artists have found a great deal of difficulties trying to find
different occasions to showcase their work, since most of the opportunities they have had was trying to exhibit their art at different art institution.
Artists face a lot of competition and challenges in terms of getting galleries to represent, show or sell their art. Only an insignificant percentage of
artists will be successful in achieving recognition for their work. "imaginative was originally founded in part as a response to issues as self
representation, back in 1999 there wasn't an annual place or meeting where indigenous artists had an exclusive opportunity to

It was owned and operated by the faculty and committed to democratic governance and the idea arts are central to the experience of learning. All
members of the College community participated in its operation, including farm work, construction projects and kitchen duty. Founders believed the
study and practice of art were indispensable aspects of a student's general liberal arts education. Located in the North Carolina mountains near
Asheville, the secluded environment fostered intense creativity and strong sense of individuality. Profoundly interdisciplinary, it offered equal attention
to painting, weaving, sculpture, pottery, poetry, music, and dance.

Descriptive Art Of Art
A wave of nostalgia washed over me when I opened the door to the Durbin Gallery. Waxy, bright, colorful, and detailed pieces ornamented the
white–walled room. I smelt the same smell I did when I was a student digging through my pencil box or when I was creating a colorful masterpiece
during my free time as a child. As I walked around the gallery and saw the pieces that the artist, Herb Williams, created and displayed in his exhibit,
Master Heist. I saw a can of Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup, a recreation of Vincent van Gogh's The Starry Night, word bubbles with text, and many
more. Williams brought me back to my childhood and amazed me within a matter of seconds of entering the exhibit by using familiar objects to
make familiar works of art. A thought I continuously had while walking around the exhibit was of how cool it was to see how one individual used
crayons, something I've always correlated as a tool used to make art, to create art. The individual pieces when observed from a distance looked to
me to be a vibrant printed picture. However, at a closer glance, it was easy to tell that it was not printed, and that it was composed of an object that
most all viewers can relate to in some way. The artist took crayons in their most simplistic form, cylinders of wax, to a new level. The thousands of
crayons were arranged by color and placed specifically with either the point or flat ends facing outwardly to create depth and movement in the pieces.
This further pushed my

Descriptive Essay On The Virtual Museum
I toured the virtual Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. Though it was not face–to–face, I still really enjoyed my experience through the
virtual word. I was more fascinated about the liveliness in the virtual world than anything else. I think the virtual museum itself was more of a
work of art than the art it displayed because it covered almost every inch from many different points of view in the museum. I also liked how it was
pretty easy to operate and move around, and no matter how much I zoomed in or out I could read almost everything perfectly fine. While being
able to explore this museum from the comfort of my own home was a plus, I truly missed out on being able to read the display labels to learn
more about the artifacts. Reading about the history or story behind a work of art is, in my opinion, the best part. This virtual tour was captivating,
and I hope to someday visit the museum in person." The Smithsonian is known for its realization and absolute beauty shown in the exhibits. Every
exhibit of this museum has great detail and precision. Not only was each exhibit filled with things of its nature, but also had the right colors to make
you feel the exhibit. For example, the vibes flowing from the ocean hall were incredible. The way they accomplished the feel of actually being in the
ocean was a surreal experience to even see through the screen. I also liked the way that everything was pretty close to life scale, like the huge whale

UNM Art Museum
As of recently, I had visited the UNM Art Museum to explore their various exhibits. There were four art exhibits at this art museum; Mata Ortiz, The
22nd Annual Juried Graduate Exhibition, Remnants: Photographs From the Disfarmer Studio, and Lightning Speak. Each exhibit portrayed similar
characteristics, such as color, seating, and physical space. As with each art gallery, white is the primary neutral color used to display each piece. The
white posts used to display certain pieces and walls gave a very modern and clean feel to the museum. As for seating, I was much too immersed into
the art pieces to notice any seating areas during each exhibit. But I'm quite certain there weren't any in most of them except for The 22nd Annual Juried

In Duncan's book "The Art Museum as a Ritual" he explains the meaning behind art museums, and how they are like rituals and are "complex entities
in which both art and architecture are parts of a larger whole." In most ways, Duncan is correct about art museums being like rituals. They are
typically isolated, quiet, and have strict rules on what you are allowed to bring and do within the museum. Each piece is displayed beautiful in its own
exclusive space. They also highly protect their pieces and maintain them on a daily. Most people don't typically go to museums for a "fun experience"
rather they go for a more rich and enlightening experience; almost something you can't replicate elsewhere because atmosphere and ambience is so
important. The reason why I bring up atmosphere and ambience is to connect it to Duncan's claim that "art museums appear as environments structured
around specific ritual scenario." Ambience and atmosphere are important aspects to museums in order to feel like rituals. The atmosphere is museums
often feel like a "pseudo–sacred kind of place filled with a ritual–like atmosphere." Duncan claims that "it is, in my view, precisely the complexity of
the art museum – its existence as a profoundly symbolic cultural object as well as a social, political, and ideological instrument – that makes the notion
of the museum as ritual so attractive," which means he believes that museums act as a cultural object for social and political means. He believes that art
museums "constitute one of those sites in which politically organized and socially institutionalized power most avidly seeks to realize its desire to
appear as beautiful, natural, and legitimate." They are incredibly excellent places to study the history of cultural forms. He believes they aren't ritual
structures, but rather they stand "as ritual structures," since they contain vast

The Civil War and American Art Exhibit at the New York...
On Saturday, June 15 I attended the Civil War and American Art exhibit at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. There were a number of
different people who were present on this occasion. I believe there were so many people there because this is one of the better known art galleries
throughout New York. Additionally, the fact that today was part of the weekend probably contributed to the massive crowds of people present. Not
everyone was there to attend the Civil War and American Art exhibit, however; there were several other exhibits taking place in different locations
throughout the museum that day. The exhibit contained upwards of 20 photographs and at least 60 paintings. One of the most agreeable things about
the works of art that I witnessed is that collectively, they assisted in recounting the sentiment that gripped the country during the war that threatened to
sunder it. One could almost feel the initial enthusiasm as the war broke out, that was swiftly prolonged by numerous clashes over a period of years.
There were works that alluded to an impending war, ones that depicted that war, and numerous ones that hinted at a hoped for ending in which the
mightiness of the country would someday be restored. One of the pieces that I found to be the most moving was Frederic Edwin Church's "Our
Banner in the Sky", which was painted during the war's outset in 1861. This is one of the pieces in which the enthusiasm for the war was quite clearly
seen. In this work, the

Sagmeister Essay
Introduction How art is presented in a museum is based off guidelines. The shows cannot be too crowded, there has to be a flow to the pieces, and
there has to be a concept behind the curation of the art. This process can take years depending on the size of the show; both floor plans and 3D
models are created to curate shows. Shows in other countries and cities will follow similar guidelines. Some exhibits may have more money put into
them and more thought about the curation, but generally there will be a concept, and flow to the pieces shown. I walked around the impressionist and
post–impressionist exhibit in the Chicago Institute of Arts, passing wildly famous pieces such as A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte

Sagmeister is famous for his installation artwork that is shown all over the world. Sagmeister is Austrian born, whose career started at age 15
writing for a magazine, leading to his interest in the layout of his articles instead of actually writing them. As a student, he studied in both Vienna,
Austria and New York City, USA. The thought put into his installations revolves around the idea of happiness and one's self where not only is his
goal to make others happy with his work, but also to make himself happy. Sagmeister works famously with typography in his pieces as well as the
color yellow. The goal of his art is to invoke a response from the audience, to make them have strong feelings about his art, which is expressed in
his series of works "What I've Learned in my Life So Far". The works shown in his booklets highlight the creative process of his works. In his pieces,
there is ultimately a story behind them; a story that drives the piece to become what you see on the wall, billboard, sign, etc. The stories inspire the
installation but despite each story being vastly different, there is a common theme throughout most of his works, what is important in life and what
makes you

The Museum Of Outdoor Arts
John Madden and his daughter, Cynthia Madden Leitner founded the Museum of Outdoor Arts (MOA) in 1981. When the museum first opened,
there were nineteen art acquisitions on display, all public outdoor sculptures, establishing the mission statement of "making art a part of everyday
life." The first building the MOA offices resided in was Orchard Falls in Greenwood Village; since then, the museum moved four or five times
within the Arapahoe county. Currently, the Museum of Outdoor Arts occupies a space in the Englewood Civic Center on the second floor across
from the courts. In 2000, MOA moved from Greenwood Village to Englewood, incorporating indoor galleries, offices, and a workshop studio into the
new location. Five to six staff members run the museum, hiring interns and independent contractors as needed. A board of trustees and an advisory
committee guide the policies of the museum and make legal decisions. The board of trustees has four members consisting of the President of the
Board, the Vice President, the Treasurer, and the Secretary, while the advisory committee has eight members. The museum curates and manages over
200 art pieces within its collection. The museum acquires at least one new art piece a year to exhibit in one of the public locations the museum
manages. Marjorie Park in Greenwood Village and the Englewood Civic Center Sculpture Garden are the two main sites for MOA to exhibit
acquisitions and large pieces from the collection. Marjorie Park, formally

Reflection On The James E. Lewis Museum Of Art Exhibit
On October 09, 2015 at around 11:15 am, I visited the James E. Lewis Museum of Art in the Murphy Fine Arts Building. When first arriving, I
expected to view art that was similar to the National Gallery of Art, but I wrong. The museum had just begun a new show titled, Promenades and
Reveries the Art of Lawrence Hurst Exhibit. This art exhibition was not the only art on display at the museum, but to me it was the most entrancing.
The Promenades and Reveries Exhibit is showcasing the amazingly poignant artwork of Lawrence Hurst. Lawrence Hurst's exhibit is a mixture of
different mediums, colors and ideas. The majority of the paintings have an Afrocentric feel, as well as several look remarkably made of marble. The
painting's progress from being bright and somewhat imaginary to portraying sentimental aspects in typical African American lives. When first entering

Grandma's House, as was the rest of the paintings mentioned, is depicted on acrylic paper. It is not similar to any of the previous paintings
mentioned, yet it is still tremendously captivating. In the center of the painting is a brown woman, with a tan hat. The woman's head is down, and the
spectator can only behold the outline of her eyes and nose. Yet, she has her hands clasp as if she is actually carrying the miniature brown trees, with
abundantly green leaves, that are directly in between her head and hands. The backdrop of the painting is in a quasi–checkerboard pattern, with
medium size squares, the corners are a sandy yellow color that could be considered fulvous, while the other squares are a lutescent yellow, meaning it is
not bright, while not dull either. Though these paintings are specific pieces in a collection and they might all look different, they share a common
bond, being that they all represent different, but major pillars in black culture, ranging from religion, to communities and finally to

The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is located in Richmond, VA. My wife and I decided to take a trip there on August 29th, specifically for this
assignment. There were many interesting exhibits there that caught my eye and we spent the better part of a day exploring it all. Although not directly
related to what we have been studying, one of the exhibits that I found most interesting was Japanese Tattoo: Perseverance, Art, and Tradition. This
exhibit's was created by artists and photographer Kip Fulbeck. The reason behind choosing this exhibit is because I have mixed feelings about tattoos.

particular piece by this artist that sticks out. It is of a young to middle aged Asian woman, and her tattoos are on her arms in the form of the 7/10

A third photograph that is especially interesting was one of a snake done by a tattoo artist in San Francisco named Luke Stewart. His piece is a full

like a lotus garden. There are dark clouds as a background that make the rest of the image brighter and seems to come to

different objects that were used for example; they had a stool, feeding funnel and a female figure. The stool was used for cooking and made out of

Similar to the section covering the Black Athena and the nuanced debated surrounding it, there is another debate area that my research delves into
that I will give a brief overview of. The debate can be summarized in a single question; what is art and what is artifact? Obviously when asked that
question an answer immediately springs to our minds, most likely an image of a famous artwork we were shown in elementary school and perhaps
an image of an archaeological dig site but the question stands; what is art and what is artifact? For some the difference is if the object had a

Art Exhibit
The art exhibit was in the Gordon Hightower Library. The exhibit was on Thursday, April 10, 2002 and lasted all day long and is still going on.
There were not many paintings, but the two main painters were Marlin Adams and R. Defamore. Adams painted portraits of fruit and people.
Defamore painted a series of paintings that were all similar but very different and dark such as "The Victim– Talking Hand and Screaming Heads" and
"The Hero–To Tell Or Not To Tell".
Deafmore's paintings appear to all be etchings, which is a very hard technique. The technique is like that of Kathe Kollwitz's etching "March of the

The Imposter painting has a deformed man with wrinkled fingers and an old man in a painting behind him. The colors are mostly black and white and
some hints of colors here and there. There is lots of emotion and anger. There are also characters at each of the bottom corners, which are starring at
each other. The Hero painting has a man with his mouth tied up and a pendulum hanging from his neck and two spears pointed at his chest. The situation
is inescapable and there is a man that is behind him and is trying to hear the man's noises.
Marlin Adams pictures are basic and don't really shoe any emotion or movement. I do not like pictures of normal people or vegetables because it is
dull and boring. One of his paintings is of a white girl maybe 10 to 12 years old with no nature background. She has long hair and a burgundy dress

The African Exhibit At The Art Institute Of Chicago
The African exhibit at the Art Institute of Chicago is difficult to find. At the end of a shotgun wing consisting of Japanese, Korean, and other East
Asian art, and beyond Native American art, sits the one–room gallery for African art. Here, most of the objects could be considered fashions, tools, or
domestic objects. There is a bizarre absence of chronology, and the objects seem too similar to speak for Africa at large– as if everything on display
arose from the same historical situation and from the same experimental sampling pool. Among this ad hoc assortment of characters, one would find a

This pattern continues on all sides of the box with the metalwork even making up the hasp on the front and the hinges of the box's lid on the plain,
back panel. Even the interior radiates with ornamentation. The coppery leather lining of the jewelry box is painted with reds, greens, purples, and
yellows. The geometry of the pattern is vastly different than the exterior. It hosts a field of angular forms adjoined to their neighbors with repetitious
outlines of various colors. Some of these forms contain even more detail. One can pick out latticing, hatching, cross–hatching, and stippling within
these shapes. The detail work creates a contrast between interior and exterior, as the artistic production between the spaces is vastly different. It
seems like these boxes are made by group effort. Functionally, the jewelry box needs further examination for any comprehension. Its bulky size makes
sense in conjunction with the many surrounding jewelry pieces, which are elaborate, heavily ornamented, and chunky. Because the back of the chest
was plain and so unlike the rest, it must have been hidden from sight. This could very well mean that the box was fixed in location, like furniture.
Similarly, by understanding that jewelry boxes were used as dowry or sometimes as a gift from bride to groom, one can also infer the centrality of the
box to the culture. In the United States it is common to receive dinnerware and other

After entering the visitor is left with the freedom to decide the starting point of their adventure, with multiple options on the 1st and 2nd floor. The

grasp the concept. Each room was filled with oil and watercolor paintings of inanimate objects such as fruit, silverware, food, and animals that
appeared to be frozen in time. The idea behind taking something as simple as a bowl of fruit and making it the focus of a painting gives sensibility

Freedom Of Expression
What is art? Can it be defined in any single painting, or sculpture? Is it even something that can be seen, or does it have to be experienced? The term
"art" is so vague that it can be applied to almost anything, really. Mostly, however, art should be that which frees our imagination. It
connects our conscious with our subconscious, putting into a visual form what we feel and think. It allows us to explore our inner self and fill that urge
to understand our minds and our universe. Art helps us to see beyond the ordinary, to see what is in our hearts without being blinded by reality. When
an artist creates a painting, it is not to create a picture; it is to create a feeling or mood. The purpose is to convey an emotion, and, it is ... Show more

At that time, Mayor Rudolph Guiliani, after having viewed the exhibit, threatened to withdraw city financial support to the museum.
The Mayor labeled the exhibit "sick" and "offensive to Catholics", and made no secret that his objections were based on his
personal dislike of the contents of the show. He criticized the work of Chris Ofili, specifically a painting called The Holy Virgin Mary, because of its
use of elephant dung. Ofili, a British artist of Nigerian descent, uses elephant dung in many of his works as a reference to his African roots. As an

The Red Queen's character is seen as an antagonist, the opposing force to Alice's adventures. Upon their first encounter in this story the queen
explains the rules of her kingdom as like the rules of a game of chess, as a story and game of advancement and promotion. Alice is like a pawn
piece and can move up the board in such a way that she too can become the queen, like as in chess the queen can move effortlessly in whatever
manner she likes. The queen perturbs Alice into an endless run with Alice having no real direction of where she is heading and meeting other strange
characters along the way which develops her idea of the impossible being possible. Elizabeth Pearce, a curator and writer for MONA states; "the Red
Queen exhibition asks us to consider whether doing something without a seeming purpose is the product of us, or whether it actually contributes to
changing us."(The Red Queen arrives at MONA 2013) This exhibition, takes us into the realms of the science behind the theme. The evolutionary
concept that in the earlier 20thcentury scientist's believed there was an end point, a goal to the evolutionary process. A parallel story of Alice put
forth this idea when the Red Queen tells Alice: "Now, here, you see, it takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place."( The Red Queen

Speed Art Museum
The Speed Art Museum, originally known as the J.B. Speed Memorial Museum, now commonly referred to as the Speed by locals in the Louisville
area, is the oldest, largest, and the primary museum of art in Kentucky.
In 2013, the museum decided to conduct a three year renovation. The new North Building includes an unprecedented 9,000 square foot gallery
dedicated to the display of the Speed's contemporary art collection. The museum hired architect, Kulapat Yantrasast. The architect decided to add

Including artwork from the fourth millennium BC to today's world, the museum truly holds a collection to see. From incredibly large painting created
in the thirteen–hundreds to marvelous detailed sculptures built in the early seventeen–hundreds the museum's eight collections holds a variety of items
to see.
Each of the exhibits are done very well, including a variety of items for each collection. Each exhibit includes art pieces that fit in their category. For
example, my favorite art piece of the museum, the fifteen foot painting of ancient dutch philosophers would fit in the category, "Dutch and Flemish".
My overall view of the museum is very positive. I truly enjoyed visiting the museum and observing all of the various art pieces the museum holds. It
was very interesting to see the large paintings in the "Dutch and Flemish" collection because I personally have always been a painting type of person
rather than sculptures and drawings.
I would most definitely recommend the museum to others. I would mostly recommend it to those individuals who enjoy to see artwork and are

North Dakota Art Gallery Analysis
There are many places around UND campus where students can enjoy the visual arts. The visual arts are quiet. They cannot force a person to give
them attention, no matter how hard they try. Images are passive and harmless, since even if a person finds an image offensive or boring all they need
to do is not look at it. Although, if a person keeps their eyes open and stops to smell the roses, they can have great conversations with works of art. On
campus there are three great places to view artwork; the North Dakota Museum of Art, The Meyer's Art Gallery, and recently the Chester Fritz Library.
All three of these galleries have different mission statements in relationship to the art they will exhibit. Viewing the artwork here and understanding the
differences within the galleries will strengthen one's mind and educate them on the social values of different organizations.
The North Dakota Museum of Art (NDMoA) is a beautiful, well kept museum with great taste. We are lucky to have an establishment like that right in
the heart of the campus. It is not technically part of UND property, which in some ways should make it a more attractive destination for students. Since
it is an entity of the state, it does not need to ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

The range of artistic subjects is unlimited beyond that specification. It is interesting to understand how public places like this, that serve many purposes

Essay On Broad Museum
The Broad museum is a contemporary art museum in downtown Los Angeles. The museum is home to 2,000 works of art in the Broad collection,
which is among the most prominent holdings of postwar and contemporary art worldwide. With its innovative "veil–and–vault" concept, the
120,000–square–foot, $140 million building features two floors of gallery space to showcase the Broad's comprehensive collection. Inside the museum
there is a escalator ride from the lobby level to the exhibition space on the third floor. The purpose of this is too separate visitors from the city and
from their cares, cars and concerns; allowing the mind to rebirth itself into a state of greater focus and spiritual expectation. The Broad features
artworks from Jeff Koon, Charles Ray, Jean–Michel Basquiat's, Robert Therrien, Takashi Murakami and Goshka Macuga. The 5th Annual Art
Exhibition displayed the works created by advanced art students at USD. At the exhibit there was a variety of paintings, graphic designs and video

knew that it was a contemporary art museum from the architecture. Once inside we weren't sure where we should go first, some people went into the
gift shop and some followed other people up the escalator to the third floor where the majority of their artworks were displayed. There were some
pieces that I very much liked and others that I thought were just expensive and made to show off. But my overall impression of the museum was good.
About two months later I went to the art exhibit at USD. This exhibit was much smaller but very well done. I liked how everything was arranged. I

Museum Analysis Sample
The subject of an art work along with the technique are the first things that draw attention to it, but how the work is curated by the museum is a
hidden factor with significant impact to how the piece is viewed by the audience. It would be very distracting to have a dark medieval work placed
on a bright pink wall because of the color contrast. This could take away greatly from a majestic piece. On the other hand, a museum can also arrange
works in a specific order and compliment works extremely well with the environment they set up the exhibit in. One example of this is seen in The
Pre–Raphaelite Legacy at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The Metropolitan's placement of the exhibit along with implementing a

The subject's face is much more detailed than any of the paintings outside of the exhibit. Her expression is also serious compared to the
lightheartedness of the Renoirs. There is definitely less light in the painting which is brought out by the lack of natural light and substituted with the
use of small bulbs shinning from above. The painting by Dante Gabriel Rossetti was done in 1867, the earliest of any painting in the room, so the
chronological ordering of the paintings is quickly evident. Scanning the room for what works stands out most; the four largest works captures all
attention. They are evenly spaced out among the walls with each of the four paintings taking a wall. The large paintings are flanked on each side by
much smaller paintings, so their size aspect is enlarged ever more. The Metropolitan is able to bring out the importance of the four by placing them
away from one another and surrounding them with lesser works, this draws your eyes towards the four works no matter where you are standing in the
room. The centerpiece of the room is The Love Song by Sir Edward Burne–Jones done on a large 45 by 61 3/8 inch canvas with oil from 1868–1877. It
is an epitome of the Brotherhood and of the Pre–Raphaelite movement depicting an old Breton song while using "Arthurian" landscape. The museum
draws attention to it by allotting the most amount of free space on the walls around it compared to the other paintings. In addition the lighting from
above shines directly down and most of the bulbs are on the sides thereby giving less light to this work. The Love Song rests in the very center of the
West wall and the largest wall of the exhibit. In other exhibits light is used to draw attention while here the lack of light is used to bring

American Montage Exhibition Essay
Leading our way the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art, I toured the exhibit, American Montage. American Montage made its big appearance of
the work of Brooklyn based artist, Adam Cvijanovic. From the previous fifteen years, this exhibition highlights establishment and extensive scale
canvases on Tyvek's shoal. Cvijanovic's enthusiasm for nineteenth–century landscape art is represented in the American Montage. Walking into Kemper
Museum of Contemporary Art, I was immediately drawn towards Adam Cvijanovic's exhibit. Cvijanovic's exhibit included art pieces such as: Flint
Hills, Discovery of America, Childhood of Buster Keaton, and my favorite, Belshazzar's feast. Noted in each Contemporary style art piece,
Cvijanovic included landscape imagery. Each of Cvijanovic's pieces contained visual feel, textural paint scheme, shadowing, and a bright color palette.
Belshazzar's feast appeared with deep hues of purple, dark shading, and the images appeared to fade away in the distance. This monument was said to
have been standing sixteen feet tall, and consisted of nine separate panels. Belshazzar's feast appears to contain a scene from ancient Babylon. I can
conduct this from the realistic appearance, and characteristics from the painting. Cvijanovic's technique for acquiring such a large crowd on the scene
is his technique of layering. The embeddedness of each person ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Analysis Of Eres Lo Que Vees By Guillermo Vargas
It is not surprisingly that some art is controversial due to the fact that everyone reacts to art differently. People can feel a wide variety of emotions
when looking at art. In some situations, the viewer does not always like the piece of art or agree with the message that the artist is portraying. An
artist that is known for an extremely controversial piece of art is Guillermo Vargas. Vargas's piece entitled "Eres Lo Que Vees," which translated to
"You Are What You Read" in English, is controversial in multiple ways. This piece of art creates controversy over the use of animals in art because it
is a live exhibit, which showcases a dog chained to a wall and deprived of food and water. Although Vargas has a meaningful message behind her work,

I think an essential part of this research process was looking up background information on the piece of art. I would not have understood "Eres Lo
Que Vees" without doing further research on the exhibit and on Vargas. As I was searching for my controversial art, I came across art that make me
too uncomfortable to critique. Some art that people thought was controversial did not make sense to me even after I looked up the meaning behind
the art. The controversy behind art is really based on one's opinion. I ended up picking this piece because I am an animal lover, therefore, I have a
strong opinion on the matter. The image caught my attention and I was confused as to why someone would chain a dog to a wall as art, so I looked
into it more. The key to finding controversial art is to finding something that may seem odd or unusual, then looking up more information about the art
to understand why it is so

Emily Carr: The Dark Oil Painting On The Woods
Upon reflection for these exhibits, they all left their own mark on me and I was certainly blown away with some of the art works. In the Emily Carr
exhibit there were multiple artists that had their own style and each was unique. My personal favorites in that gallery where;
Artist: Emily Carr. Painting: Shore and forest (Cordova bay) My depiction: The dark oil paint on the paper kinda give this calming landscape a very
rugged look to it. Almost unsettling. Lots of movement with the oil paint. Artist: Lawren S. Harris. Painting: From berg lake, evening, #4 in the
"sketches of mount Robson" series. My depiction: I appreciate this one for it's multitude of tones. Though it is a monotone painting it is beautiful done
in the day that the changes of color are melded together very well and that all the shedding is done marvelously. The mountain seemed so perfect and
untouched. Tones and clean lines with oil paint has always been a struggle of mine.

The title of this show is Elissa Wenthe Art Exhibit. At first glance, I thought that I had stepped into a Dr. Seuss book. The tree figures in the middle
were quite whimsical and free. The textures on the trees were very fluffy and light. The tiles on the wall were the exact opposite. They reminded me
of an industrial park. They were metallic, hard, and formidable looking. At first, I thought the artist had just glued a bunch of trash to a board and
spray painted it silver. The fact that it was actually clay was impressive because of the many different shapes and structures she included in the pieces.

I enjoyed how light it made me feel while looking at it–almost as if I could float away with it. I loved how the artist chose wood and then painted it
with a glossy paint. This piece was located near an air vent. I noticed how much movement the fabric had in the wind and I thought that was an
added bonus to the piece. Another thing that I enjoyed about this piece was the fact that it was elevated up into the air. It made me feel as if I was
walking through a forest rather than a gallery and I loved that. It also allowed for a better view of the limbs of the tree figure and a neat
perspective. The other tree figures also resonated with me, especially the figures that also had fabric located on the ground near the figures. I thought
this gave each piece a dramatic look and added more depth to the exhibit. In my opinion, the weakest aspect of the exhibit was the blue photographs. I
did not enjoy looking at them as much as I did with the other pieces. They looked like they were just printed out last minute and pinned up on the wall.
All of the other pieces had a beautiful three–dimensional effect, while these were loosely attached to the wall. The pictures looked like they had been
bent slightly due to the air and that made them look unprofessional. They also had far less detail than the other pieces, especially in comparison to the
tiles that had a lot going on in one small piece. I also think that it would have been better to have them

is usually a small fee to enter, around $30.00 or $40.00, which is the "jurors fee." Juried exhibits are usually adjudicated by an art professional or
team of art pros (artists, curators, dealers, and the like), who review all of the submissions, select work for the exhibit, and sometimes award prizes for
the best work in the show–and sometimes those prizes are cash! Juried exhibits are a great way get your work out into the public, build your resume,...

One of my favorites is housed in the Regional Arts Commission building in St. Louis. RAC is a nonprofit organization that supports artists in a
variety of way, one of which is providing a rotating exhibition program. Universities also operate nonprofit galleries, which are tied to their
educational mission. There are some great advantages to exhibiting nonprofit spaces. First, they typically don't have a "stable of artists" like a
commercial gallery, but rather exhibit the work of many different artists over the years. Another benefit is that while they aren't in the business of
selling work, artists are often approached about private sales, and if you are, the nonprofit doesn't ask for a cut (although it's a good idea to make a
donation!) Nonprofits also have credibility, which is good in the future when curators, dealers, or potential buyers are scrutinizing your resume. I like
exhibiting at nonprofits, particularly universities, because you are often asked to do some activities in conjunction with the exhibit like studio visits
with students, public lectures, or workshops. When researching nonprofits, be sure to read their mission statement before submitting materials to make
sure your work is suitable for their venue. Most non–profits rely heavily on grants and donations, and they will have a specific mission, which is
outlined in their promotional

Art Exhibit on Brown Versus Board of Educaiton Essay
Like A Fish out of Water
I'll be the first to admit it: I cannot understand art for the life of me. That being said, I'm somehow always tricked into thinking I do. I've tried my
hand at being one of those intellectuals who goes to art museums for recreation, and enjoys analyzing pictures, paintings and monochromic blobs. But
every time I drag myself to a museum, I end up discovering the same three truths about myself: 1. I'm horrible at grasping the artist's message. 2. I get
frustrated with things I don't understand. 3. When I get frustrated, I get mad. That being said, it was only natural that I go to the Krannert Art Museum
to see the Brown v. Board of Education exhibit.

Recalling my inability to understand art, you can just imagine how much fun I had in the museum. When I walked into the little area I was
immediately stopped by a collection of commemorative plates, each with names of famous civil rights activists on them. The plates looked very
elegant, but I couldn't figure out why the artist would want to create them. "Irony", I thought, "it must be ironic somehow. Artists love irony– but how
is this ironic?" Maybe because the names were in black on white plates? Maybe because they didn't lead extravagant lifestyles but yet were
commemorated on extravagant plates? Or maybe that their names, and all that they have stood for, have been reduced to a cheap souvenir–like object,
that may or may not be available at the gift shop. I decided to shake off all the thoughts that were running through my head when I saw a giant sign
that described the purpose of the exhibit, and what Brown v Board meant. Beneath it I found a pamphlet describing each work. "Spectacular", I
thought. "Now this is my kind of art museum – one with answers".
My confidence level rose as I approached a series of photographs, labeled Plessy v. Ferguson. I glanced at each picture, and noticed a progression in
the movement of a black woman and a white woman sitting on a chair. They seemed to be struggling for control of the chair, trying to obtain more
space, but never finding the right fit, only to end up sitting on opposite sides of the

The San Antonio Art Museum
The exhibition that I viewed at the San Antonio Art Museum was called "28 Chinese". This exhibit was based on the artwork of 28 contemporary
Chinese artists. Throughout the exhibit, it was discussing the fall of communism, poverty, the essence of time, resistance, rebellion and the
conservation of history. Some of the artwork I saw were created by Zhu Jinshi, Qiu Zhijie, Zhang Huan, and Shang Yixin, just to name a few. The
exhibit was on two floors of the museum. When I first entered the exhibit, it led me to a big white room with art being displayed on all walls. The
first room was based on the Coca Cola project in which there was a tall case of Coca Cola bottles being displayed right when you walk in. To the
right was a clear box that held burnt down Coca Cola bottles. These items being displayed made me want to read about the project since it was a
familiar company that most people know. Some of the other rooms were structured differently. Some had sculptures, audio visuals, interactive
pieces and others had modified furniture but every piece of art had a description next to it which told who the artist was as well as the meaning of
the art itself. The materials used for some of the art works included wood, bamboo, and rice paper. The second floor to the exhibit is mostly abstract
art work. The overall theme of this was to express their preservation of Chinese culture being good and bad aspects through art. In order for each piece
of artwork to convey their purpose,

Bowers Museum Analysis

  • 1. Bowers Museum Analysis Davis, E Bowers Museum Review Located in Santa Ana, CA the Bowers Museum can be seen in a similar light as the art work "Levitated Mass" by Michael Heizer. I say this because the Bowers is located in a not so nice part of Santa Ana and can be looked at as a beacon. The Architecture is set in the style of a mission with Stuccoed Walls, Terra Cotta Roof Tiles, Cement Copying and Curvilinear Gables. As you enter the bowers Museum you walk up on a long dramatic brick walkway that takes you under a dramatic Curvilinear Gable delivering you to the entrance as you pass through a lush green lawn and a courtyard that makes you... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Through this exhibit you start to think of the medium Pelt uses and how hard it is as you look at the pieces for their sheer stunning beauty! The one piece that stood out for me over the rest was the "Agate Rhyton". This piece is carved into a drinking vessel in the shape of an Impala (I think) with its head slightly raised up with a gold piece as it nose. As you leave the Gemstone Carvings you walk into a rotunda that has Pacific Islander carved bouts and large carved log drums. From here you enter the exhibit Ancient Arts of China. This exhibit allows you to look at a history of Chinese Art dating as far back as 5000 years. starting with painted large ceramic pots from the Neolithic period. This exhibit will take you on a journey with items on display like sculpture of horse made during the Han Dynasty, to silk robes, ivory carvings and special items made for the afterlife. A stark contrast to the Ancient Arts of China exhibit, you walk into my favorite exhibit which is the Spirits and Headhunters: Art of the Pacific Islands. To set the mood the exhibit is ... • 2. Ultimate Art Exhibit, a Journey through Time Essay There are many works of art and many different possible locations that could be considered when trying to create would be classified as "The Ultimate Art Exhibit". For my project, I have decided to place my Art exhibit inside of Rome, Italy for many reasons. One of which is that Rome is known to have very beautiful building architecture and is known for great masterpieces such as The Pantheon and also the Colosseum. Due to the extremely high number of tourists that Rome gets year–round, if an art gallery that yielded extremely high expectations were placed here then it would receive a very high volume of people daily. So due to this and its culture I decided that Rome may be one of the better choices so the art exhibit will be placed ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Each of the halls that contains a different piece will have its own theme and design to match the art that is used as a centerpiece inside of it. Each hall will also contain elements to bring out the true nature of the art contained inside and to demonstrate a sense of understanding for the piece itself and the time is was being created in. If not understanding, then it would produce a sense of awe in many of the viewers in the exhibit. The reason behind this theme was simply to be able to dedicate a gallery to each of the individual masterpieces and put in some extra artistic touches to make things far greater. It may be different than a standard Museum or art exhibit, but these are some of the greatest achievements in historical art and they need a place that can show their significance. The first hall will contain Egyptian Art, and in particular Narmer's Palette. Narmer's Palette was a symbol of art that displayed a scene of the unification between the upper and lower divisions of Egypt (Kinnaer) and was the easiest example of canonized art (Kinnaer) that we currently have. I chose this piece because not only is it a symbol of Egyptian unification but because of its significance in the art world. Narmer was displayed wearing both crowns and standing in a Victory pose which was used to show his power over his enemies. This pose was adopted by other styles of art to show power ... • 3. Advantage Of Art Festivals "The purpose of art is washing the dust of daily life off our souls." By Pablo Picasso. Over the years, some have had the privilege of appreciating art by visiting different art galleries and institutions. In recent times, however, art festivals have become a popular event where everyone can participate, explore and enjoy different art works. Art festivals are events that feature different combinations of artworks using various mediums by several artists. These festivals are usually held at a public setting and they celebrate both the art and the artists. It is important to have such festivals since they benefit the artists, the public and the general audience of art. Art festivals can be an excellent advantage for indigenous artists who are trying to gain recognition and enumerating the art pieces they produce. Throughout the years, upcoming artists have found a great deal of difficulties trying to find different occasions to showcase their work, since most of the opportunities they have had was trying to exhibit their art at different art institution. Artists face a lot of competition and challenges in terms of getting galleries to represent, show or sell their art. Only an insignificant percentage of artists will be successful in achieving recognition for their work. "imaginative was originally founded in part as a response to issues as self representation, back in 1999 there wasn't an annual place or meeting where indigenous artists had an exclusive opportunity to ... • 5. Descriptive Art Of Art A wave of nostalgia washed over me when I opened the door to the Durbin Gallery. Waxy, bright, colorful, and detailed pieces ornamented the white–walled room. I smelt the same smell I did when I was a student digging through my pencil box or when I was creating a colorful masterpiece during my free time as a child. As I walked around the gallery and saw the pieces that the artist, Herb Williams, created and displayed in his exhibit, Master Heist. I saw a can of Campbell's Chicken Noodle Soup, a recreation of Vincent van Gogh's The Starry Night, word bubbles with text, and many more. Williams brought me back to my childhood and amazed me within a matter of seconds of entering the exhibit by using familiar objects to make familiar works of art. A thought I continuously had while walking around the exhibit was of how cool it was to see how one individual used crayons, something I've always correlated as a tool used to make art, to create art. The individual pieces when observed from a distance looked to me to be a vibrant printed picture. However, at a closer glance, it was easy to tell that it was not printed, and that it was composed of an object that most all viewers can relate to in some way. The artist took crayons in their most simplistic form, cylinders of wax, to a new level. The thousands of crayons were arranged by color and placed specifically with either the point or flat ends facing outwardly to create depth and movement in the pieces. This further pushed my ... • 7. Descriptive Essay On The Virtual Museum I toured the virtual Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History. Though it was not face–to–face, I still really enjoyed my experience through the virtual word. I was more fascinated about the liveliness in the virtual world than anything else. I think the virtual museum itself was more of a work of art than the art it displayed because it covered almost every inch from many different points of view in the museum. I also liked how it was pretty easy to operate and move around, and no matter how much I zoomed in or out I could read almost everything perfectly fine. While being able to explore this museum from the comfort of my own home was a plus, I truly missed out on being able to read the display labels to learn more about the artifacts. Reading about the history or story behind a work of art is, in my opinion, the best part. This virtual tour was captivating, and I hope to someday visit the museum in person." The Smithsonian is known for its realization and absolute beauty shown in the exhibits. Every exhibit of this museum has great detail and precision. Not only was each exhibit filled with things of its nature, but also had the right colors to make you feel the exhibit. For example, the vibes flowing from the ocean hall were incredible. The way they accomplished the feel of actually being in the ocean was a surreal experience to even see through the screen. I also liked the way that everything was pretty close to life scale, like the huge whale hanging from the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 8. UNM Art Museum As of recently, I had visited the UNM Art Museum to explore their various exhibits. There were four art exhibits at this art museum; Mata Ortiz, The 22nd Annual Juried Graduate Exhibition, Remnants: Photographs From the Disfarmer Studio, and Lightning Speak. Each exhibit portrayed similar characteristics, such as color, seating, and physical space. As with each art gallery, white is the primary neutral color used to display each piece. The white posts used to display certain pieces and walls gave a very modern and clean feel to the museum. As for seating, I was much too immersed into the art pieces to notice any seating areas during each exhibit. But I'm quite certain there weren't any in most of them except for The 22nd Annual Juried Graduate ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In Duncan's book "The Art Museum as a Ritual" he explains the meaning behind art museums, and how they are like rituals and are "complex entities in which both art and architecture are parts of a larger whole." In most ways, Duncan is correct about art museums being like rituals. They are typically isolated, quiet, and have strict rules on what you are allowed to bring and do within the museum. Each piece is displayed beautiful in its own exclusive space. They also highly protect their pieces and maintain them on a daily. Most people don't typically go to museums for a "fun experience" rather they go for a more rich and enlightening experience; almost something you can't replicate elsewhere because atmosphere and ambience is so important. The reason why I bring up atmosphere and ambience is to connect it to Duncan's claim that "art museums appear as environments structured around specific ritual scenario." Ambience and atmosphere are important aspects to museums in order to feel like rituals. The atmosphere is museums often feel like a "pseudo–sacred kind of place filled with a ritual–like atmosphere." Duncan claims that "it is, in my view, precisely the complexity of the art museum – its existence as a profoundly symbolic cultural object as well as a social, political, and ideological instrument – that makes the notion of the museum as ritual so attractive," which means he believes that museums act as a cultural object for social and political means. He believes that art museums "constitute one of those sites in which politically organized and socially institutionalized power most avidly seeks to realize its desire to appear as beautiful, natural, and legitimate." They are incredibly excellent places to study the history of cultural forms. He believes they aren't ritual structures, but rather they stand "as ritual structures," since they contain vast ... • 9. The Civil War and American Art Exhibit at the New York... On Saturday, June 15 I attended the Civil War and American Art exhibit at the New York Metropolitan Museum of Art. There were a number of different people who were present on this occasion. I believe there were so many people there because this is one of the better known art galleries throughout New York. Additionally, the fact that today was part of the weekend probably contributed to the massive crowds of people present. Not everyone was there to attend the Civil War and American Art exhibit, however; there were several other exhibits taking place in different locations throughout the museum that day. The exhibit contained upwards of 20 photographs and at least 60 paintings. One of the most agreeable things about the works of art that I witnessed is that collectively, they assisted in recounting the sentiment that gripped the country during the war that threatened to sunder it. One could almost feel the initial enthusiasm as the war broke out, that was swiftly prolonged by numerous clashes over a period of years. There were works that alluded to an impending war, ones that depicted that war, and numerous ones that hinted at a hoped for ending in which the mightiness of the country would someday be restored. One of the pieces that I found to be the most moving was Frederic Edwin Church's "Our Banner in the Sky", which was painted during the war's outset in 1861. This is one of the pieces in which the enthusiasm for the war was quite clearly seen. In this work, the ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 10. Sagmeister Essay Introduction How art is presented in a museum is based off guidelines. The shows cannot be too crowded, there has to be a flow to the pieces, and there has to be a concept behind the curation of the art. This process can take years depending on the size of the show; both floor plans and 3D models are created to curate shows. Shows in other countries and cities will follow similar guidelines. Some exhibits may have more money put into them and more thought about the curation, but generally there will be a concept, and flow to the pieces shown. I walked around the impressionist and post–impressionist exhibit in the Chicago Institute of Arts, passing wildly famous pieces such as A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte and countless... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Sagmeister is famous for his installation artwork that is shown all over the world. Sagmeister is Austrian born, whose career started at age 15 writing for a magazine, leading to his interest in the layout of his articles instead of actually writing them. As a student, he studied in both Vienna, Austria and New York City, USA. The thought put into his installations revolves around the idea of happiness and one's self where not only is his goal to make others happy with his work, but also to make himself happy. Sagmeister works famously with typography in his pieces as well as the color yellow. The goal of his art is to invoke a response from the audience, to make them have strong feelings about his art, which is expressed in his series of works "What I've Learned in my Life So Far". The works shown in his booklets highlight the creative process of his works. In his pieces, there is ultimately a story behind them; a story that drives the piece to become what you see on the wall, billboard, sign, etc. The stories inspire the installation but despite each story being vastly different, there is a common theme throughout most of his works, what is important in life and what makes you ... • 11. The Museum Of Outdoor Arts John Madden and his daughter, Cynthia Madden Leitner founded the Museum of Outdoor Arts (MOA) in 1981. When the museum first opened, there were nineteen art acquisitions on display, all public outdoor sculptures, establishing the mission statement of "making art a part of everyday life." The first building the MOA offices resided in was Orchard Falls in Greenwood Village; since then, the museum moved four or five times within the Arapahoe county. Currently, the Museum of Outdoor Arts occupies a space in the Englewood Civic Center on the second floor across from the courts. In 2000, MOA moved from Greenwood Village to Englewood, incorporating indoor galleries, offices, and a workshop studio into the new location. Five to six staff members run the museum, hiring interns and independent contractors as needed. A board of trustees and an advisory committee guide the policies of the museum and make legal decisions. The board of trustees has four members consisting of the President of the Board, the Vice President, the Treasurer, and the Secretary, while the advisory committee has eight members. The museum curates and manages over 200 art pieces within its collection. The museum acquires at least one new art piece a year to exhibit in one of the public locations the museum manages. Marjorie Park in Greenwood Village and the Englewood Civic Center Sculpture Garden are the two main sites for MOA to exhibit acquisitions and large pieces from the collection. • 12. Reflection On The James E. Lewis Museum Of Art Exhibit On October 09, 2015 at around 11:15 am, I visited the James E. Lewis Museum of Art in the Murphy Fine Arts Building. When first arriving, I expected to view art that was similar to the National Gallery of Art, but I wrong. The museum had just begun a new show titled, Promenades and Reveries the Art of Lawrence Hurst Exhibit. This art exhibition was not the only art on display at the museum, but to me it was the most entrancing. The Promenades and Reveries Exhibit is showcasing the amazingly poignant artwork of Lawrence Hurst. Lawrence Hurst's exhibit is a mixture of different mediums, colors and ideas. The majority of the paintings have an Afrocentric feel, as well as several look remarkably made of marble. The painting's progress from being bright and somewhat imaginary to portraying sentimental aspects in typical African American lives. When first entering the museum and observing ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Grandma's House, as was the rest of the paintings mentioned, is depicted on acrylic paper. It is not similar to any of the previous paintings mentioned, yet it is still tremendously captivating. In the center of the painting is a brown woman, with a tan hat. The woman's head is down, and the spectator can only behold the outline of her eyes and nose. Yet, she has her hands clasp as if she is actually carrying the miniature brown trees, with abundantly green leaves, that are directly in between her head and hands. The backdrop of the painting is in a quasi–checkerboard pattern, with medium size squares, the corners are a sandy yellow color that could be considered fulvous, while the other squares are a lutescent yellow, meaning it is not bright, while not dull either. Though these paintings are specific pieces in a collection and they might all look different, they share a common bond, being that they all represent different, but major pillars in black culture, ranging from religion, to communities and finally to ... Baird WEEK 10 – ASSIGMENT 3 9/1/2015 Professor: Ed Yancey Cultural Activity Report The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts is located in Richmond, VA. My wife and I decided to take a trip there on August 29th, specifically for this assignment. There were many interesting exhibits there that caught my eye and we spent the better part of a day exploring it all. Since we went with a toddler I wasn't able to see all the exhibits and galleries due to my little sister being impatient and having an impulse of wanting to touch everything. The first exhibit we looked at was the Art of The Pacific that their art goes back to the 18th century from Hawaiian, Polynesian, and Melanesia. They have different objects that were used for example; they had a stool, feeding funnel and a female figure. The stool was used for cooking and made out of wood and fiber. The debate can be summarized in a single question; what is art and what is artifact? • 17. Essay on Art Exhibit Art Exhibit The art exhibit was in the Gordon Hightower Library. The exhibit was on Thursday, April 10, 2002 and lasted all day long and is still going on. There were not many paintings, but the two main painters were Marlin Adams and R. Defamore. Adams painted portraits of fruit and people. Defamore painted a series of paintings that were all similar but very different and dark such as "The Victim– Talking Hand and Screaming Heads" and "The Hero–To Tell Or Not To Tell". Deafmore's paintings appear to all be etchings, which is a very hard technique. The technique is like that of Kathe Kollwitz's etching "March of the Weavers", from the "Weavers cycle." The paintings that... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The Imposter painting has a deformed man with wrinkled fingers and an old man in a painting behind him. The colors are mostly black and white and some hints of colors here and there. There is lots of emotion and anger. The Hero painting has a man with his mouth tied up and a pendulum hanging from his neck and two spears pointed at his chest. The situation is inescapable and there is a man that is behind him and is trying to hear the man's noises. Marlin Adams pictures are basic and don't really shoe any emotion or movement. I do not like pictures of normal people or vegetables because it is dull and boring. One of his paintings is of a white girl maybe 10 to 12 years old with no nature background. At the end of a shotgun wing consisting of Japanese, Korean, and other East Asian art, and beyond Native American art, sits the one–room gallery for African art. Here, most of the objects could be considered fashions, tools, or domestic objects. There is a bizarre absence of chronology, and the objects seem too similar to speak for Africa at large– as if everything on display arose from the same historical situation and from the same experimental sampling pool. This pattern continues on all sides of the box with the metalwork even making up the hasp on the front and the hinges of the box's lid on the plain, back panel. Even the interior radiates with ornamentation. The coppery leather lining of the jewelry box is painted with reds, greens, purples, and yellows. The geometry of the pattern is vastly different than the exterior. It hosts a field of angular forms adjoined to their neighbors with repetitious outlines of various colors. Some of these forms contain even more detail. One can pick out latticing, hatching, cross–hatching, and stippling within these shapes. The detail work creates a contrast between interior and exterior, as the artistic production between the spaces is vastly different. It seems like these boxes are made by group effort. Functionally, the jewelry box needs further examination for any comprehension. Its bulky size makes sense in conjunction with the many surrounding jewelry pieces, which are elaborate, heavily ornamented, and chunky. Because the back of the chest was plain and so unlike the rest, it must have been hidden from sight. This could very well mean that the box was fixed in location, like furniture. Similarly, by understanding that jewelry boxes were used as dowry or sometimes as a gift from bride to groom, one can also infer the centrality of the box to the culture. The term "art" is so vague that it can be applied to almost anything, really. Mostly, however, art should be that which frees our imagination. It connects our conscious with our subconscious, putting into a visual form what we feel and think. It allows us to explore our inner self and fill that urge to understand our minds and our universe. The Mayor labeled the exhibit "sick" and "offensive to Catholics", and made no secret that his objections were based on his personal dislike of the contents of the show. He criticized the work of Chris Ofili, specifically a painting called The Holy Virgin Mary, because of its use of elephant dung. Ofili, a British artist of Nigerian descent, uses elephant dung in many of his works as a reference to his African roots. As an observant Catholic himself, he denies that his work is either anti–Catholic or anti–religious. He meant the dung to be a symbol of life and providence, however this simple explanation was not enough to satisfy Guilani. His threats to withdraw funding stood firm. Museum Analysis Sample The subject of an art work along with the technique are the first things that draw attention to it, but how the work is curated by the museum is a hidden factor with significant impact to how the piece is viewed by the audience. It would be very distracting to have a dark medieval work placed on a bright pink wall because of the color contrast. This could take away greatly from a majestic piece. On the other hand, a museum can also arrange works in a specific order and compliment works extremely well with the environment they set up the exhibit in. Her expression is also serious compared to the lightheartedness of the Renoirs. There is definitely less light in the painting which is brought out by the lack of natural light and substituted with the use of small bulbs shinning from above. The painting by Dante Gabriel Rossetti was done in 1867, the earliest of any painting in the room, so the chronological ordering of the paintings is quickly evident. Scanning the room for what works stands out most; the four largest works captures all attention. They are evenly spaced out among the walls with each of the four paintings taking a wall. The large paintings are flanked on each side by much smaller paintings, so their size aspect is enlarged ever more. The Metropolitan is able to bring out the importance of the four by placing them away from one another and surrounding them with lesser works, this draws your eyes towards the four works no matter where you are standing in the room. The centerpiece of the room is The Love Song by Sir Edward Burne–Jones done on a large 45 by 61 3/8 inch canvas with oil from 1868–1877. It is an epitome of the Brotherhood and of the Pre–Raphaelite movement depicting an old Breton song while using "Arthurian" landscape. The museum draws attention to it by allotting the most amount of free space on the walls around it compared to the other paintings. In addition the lighting from above shines directly down and most of the bulbs are on the sides thereby giving less light to this work. All these exhibits are located in the Kilkenny castle basement. There is also a restaurant in the Kilkenny castle basement. There are also amazing festivals. • 34. Juried Exhibition Research Paper Juried Exhibitions My first exhibits were juried exhibitions, where I responded to a call for entry and had work accepted into a group or solo exhibit. Typically, you submit a few images of works (3 is a pretty common) along with supporting material (artist statement, bio, resume, etc). There is usually a small fee to enter, around $30.00 or $40.00, which is the "jurors fee." Juried exhibits are usually adjudicated by an art professional or team of art pros (artists, curators, dealers, and the like), who review all of the submissions, select work for the exhibit, and sometimes award prizes for the best work in the show–and sometimes those prizes are cash! Juried exhibits are a great way get your work out into the public, build your resume,... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... One of my favorites is housed in the Regional Arts Commission building in St. Louis. RAC is a nonprofit organization that supports artists in a variety of way, one of which is providing a rotating exhibition program. Universities also operate nonprofit galleries, which are tied to their educational mission. There are some great advantages to exhibiting nonprofit spaces. First, they typically don't have a "stable of artists" like a commercial gallery, but rather exhibit the work of many different artists over the years. Another benefit is that while they aren't in the business of selling work, artists are often approached about private sales, and if you are, the nonprofit doesn't ask for a cut (although it's a good idea to make a donation!) Nonprofits also have credibility, which is good in the future when curators, dealers, or potential buyers are scrutinizing your resume. I like exhibiting at nonprofits, particularly universities, because you are often asked to do some activities in conjunction with the exhibit like studio visits with students, public lectures, or workshops. When researching nonprofits, be sure to read their mission statement before submitting materials to make sure your work is suitable for their venue. Most non–profits rely heavily on grants and donations, and they will have a specific mission, which is outlined in their promotional ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 35. Native American Dioramas room decorated in artifacts, materials to represent the cooking or sleeping area, or even mannequins of natives. These dioramas, however, though trying to portray accuracy always seemed to portray the same thing, Indians and their culture frozen in time. These displays let the visitors see how American Indians once lived and what it must have been like. These realistic representations of villages, huts, homes of Indians may not have contained real materials from native cultures; they contained "artifacts" made by non–Indians to represent the Indian lifestyle. By using replicas, this paints the displays as a theory, thus creating another discrepancy in how native cultures were represented in the past. With replica artifacts used, unrealistic mannequins, voice, and video recordings depict the cultures as a scene out of a movie, frozen in time, and a fantasy. In its history, dioramas have fallen short in representing the actual history and present life of a native culture nor had they included a Native American opinion or assistance in creating the ... No real significance seems to be brought with presenting the pieces to the public, failing to show their link and value to the Native peoples who made and used them.10 In regards to the art of the Native American culture, in 1910 one art museum in Brooklyn presented Native American cultures as serious art. It was the start of a different way to look at and present objects of diverse cultures. The only issues were that in the museum, the curator, Stuart Culin, selected one tribe to represent an entire region of North America. Objects in the museum were organized based on their function and used very descriptive labels, photographs, small–scale models, among others means to attempt to portray the environment ... • 36. Reflection On Veterans Art Exhibit Veterans' Art Exhibit This exhibit is certainly very different than the ones we have seen in pervious gallery reviews. At the performance studio is filled with the Veteran's. This is the first time ICC has gone hand and hand with the military veterans and hope that this is the beginning of an annual art show that takes place over the years. https://icc.edu/arts/news/icc–art–gallery–exhibits–featuring–works–by–veterans–local–artist–open–october–19/. All the art work has a different artist, but also the artist have different techniques for their art work. After looking through all the different art pieces I pulled out one that certainly stood out to me when as I was looking through them. From Max Barton who was a part of the 5th Army Air Crop, ... • 37. Art Exhibit on Brown Versus Board of Educaiton Essay Like A Fish out of Water I'll be the first to admit it: I cannot understand art for the life of me. That being said, I'm somehow always tricked into thinking I do. I've tried my hand at being one of those intellectuals who goes to art museums for recreation, and enjoys analyzing pictures, paintings and monochromic blobs. But every time I drag myself to a museum, I end up discovering the same three truths about myself: 1. I'm horrible at grasping the artist's message. 2. I get frustrated with things I don't understand. 3. When I get frustrated, I get mad. That being said, it was only natural that I go to the Krannert Art Museum to see the Brown v. Board of Education exhibit. I've never been to the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Recalling my inability to understand art, you can just imagine how much fun I had in the museum. When I walked into the little area I was immediately stopped by a collection of commemorative plates, each with names of famous civil rights activists on them. The plates looked very elegant, but I couldn't figure out why the artist would want to create them. "Irony", I thought, "it must be ironic somehow. Artists love irony– but how is this ironic?" Maybe because the names were in black on white plates? Maybe because they didn't lead extravagant lifestyles but yet were commemorated on extravagant plates? Or maybe that their names, and all that they have stood for, have been reduced to a cheap souvenir–like object, that may or may not be available at the gift shop. I decided to shake off all the thoughts that were running through my head when I saw a giant sign that described the purpose of the exhibit, and what Brown v Board meant. Beneath it I found a pamphlet describing each work. "Spectacular", I thought. "Now this is my kind of art museum – one with answers". My confidence level rose as I approached a series of photographs, labeled Plessy v. Ferguson. I glanced at each picture, and noticed a progression in the movement of a black woman and a white woman sitting on a chair. They seemed to be struggling for control of the chair, trying to obtain more space, but never finding the right fit, only to end up sitting on opposite sides of the ... • 38. The San Antonio Art Museum The exhibition that I viewed at the San Antonio Art Museum was called "28 Chinese". This exhibit was based on the artwork of 28 contemporary Chinese artists. Throughout the exhibit, it was discussing the fall of communism, poverty, the essence of time, resistance, rebellion and the conservation of history. Some of the artwork I saw were created by Zhu Jinshi, Qiu Zhijie, Zhang Huan, and Shang Yixin, just to name a few. The exhibit was on two floors of the museum. When I first entered the exhibit, it led me to a big white room with art being displayed on all walls. The first room was based on the Coca Cola project in which there was a tall case of Coca Cola bottles being displayed right when you walk in. To the right was a clear box that held burnt down Coca Cola bottles. These items being displayed made me want to read about the project since it was a familiar company that most people know. Some of the other rooms were structured differently. Some had sculptures, audio visuals, interactive pieces and others had modified furniture but every piece of art had a description next to it which told who the artist was as well as the meaning of the art itself. The materials used for some of the art works included wood, bamboo, and rice paper. The second floor to the exhibit is mostly abstract art work. The overall theme of this was to express their preservation of Chinese culture being good and bad aspects through art. In order for each piece of artwork to convey their purpose, ... • 39. Personal Narrative: My Visit To El Paso Art Museum My overall experience at El Paso Museum of Art was better than I expected for the overall visit. First I like the say the security was very nice to welcome me into the museum. The security guard explains the exhibits and I can take pics, but it couldn't be with a flash. I was very impress during my visit by so many painting and sculptures that I would never have even thought I could find stimulating and actually enjoying the amazing collection of oil canvas paintings that had the ability to bring you different styles of art just a dim and well–lit room full of pictures and sculptures, where I could stand for a few minutes feeling where I'm in the different time and place.
