Progressivism Was Motivated By Various Progressive Ideas...
Progressivism was the change development that kept running from the late 19th century through the
main many years of the 20th century, which driving educated people and social reformers in the
United States looked to address the monetary, political, and social inquiries that had emerged with
regards to the quick changes carried with the Industrial Revolution and the development of current
private enterprise in America. The Progressives trusted that these progressions denoted the end of
the old request and required the formation of another request suitable for the new mechanical age.
Expansionism was motivated by various progressive ideas. Imperialism was an adjournment of the
movement to direct and normalize society, economics, and government.
Order, Regulation, and World Economy
The United States dominated the world market in producing items by 1900. They produced
petroleum and agricultural machinery to sewing machines and cameras. Foreign investments
tremendously increased from $700 million in 1897 to 2.5 billion in 1908; and again to $ 3.5 billion
my 1914. Businesses in the U.S. eventually controlled about 78 percent of all the mines in Mexico
(silver, lead, and copper) by 1917 and about 58 percent of oil production. The U.S investment nearly
approached $1 billion toward just Mexico alone. Due to the laissez–faire policies the American
interest in international market places needed protection. The Progressive Party platform felt that it
was important to the welfare of

Jackie Robinson Contributions to the Development of America
The first man to break the color barrier in Major League Baseball in the 20th century, Jackie
Robinson is, to this day, one of the most celebrated baseball players in history. It is only a few times
in one's life that they have the chance to know of someone who's character could be digested in
simply a sentence. Especially a complex person, a complex athelte. Although there aren't many
people like Jackie Robinson. "A life is not important," he said, "except in the impact it has on other
lives." With that said, there are a small number of people, and zero athlete's who have influenced
more lifes. Due to being the first African American man to play in the MLB, Jackie recieved a ton of
critism and negative attention all through his career. However, Robinson managed to turn his cheek
to all things negative, and went on to chage the face of America's favorite past time forever. Jakcie
signed with the Dodgers, August 28, 1945 "'Launching the experiment in Montreal was more then
fortuitous. It was destiny in some ways. The security and respect shown towards us allowed Jackie
to perform at the peak of his ability'" Mrs. Robinson claimed. Soon enough, Newspapers reffered to
Jackie as the "colored comet" or "the dark destroyer." Still he disreguarded all racial slurs, it helped
that he signed a conteact prohibitting him from responding. On March 17th, 1946 he played his first
professional game in Daytona. "'He was impatient and a fighter for change,'" Mrs. Robinson stated,

Walgreens Strategic Analysis
Veronica Washington 0180175 Walgreens Pharmacy (WAG) An Industry Leader at the Inflection

The following report is an in–depth discussion of Walgreens Pharmacy with an analysis and
assessment of the company's strategic initiatives. Each strategy yields a direct purpose of
diminishing the influence of a specific force from Porter's 5–force Model as the supporting data
culminates an outlook on the company's future.
COMPANY OVERVIEW Charles Walgreen of Chicago, Illinois, pioneered the first Walgreens in
1901, with corporate headquarters now located in Deerfield, Illinois. In the company's 100–year

(WAG Annual Reports, 2007) Mark Wagner, VP of Operations, announced that after reviewing the
2007 compiled transfer logs of the company, "72% of all prescription transfers [in 2007] are
competitor coupon–related issues " (WAG Annual Report, 2007) Walgreens remained static in their
decision to offer any type of compensation to new customers or transferred prescriptions until
October 2008. Walgreens customers receive an average of four prescriptions on a monthly basis
from the pharmacy (WAG Annual Reports, 2007). With 65% of the sales revenue of the company
coming from the pharmacy, Walgreens declines to bargain with out–of–pocket customers over price.
Regardless of a climbing prescription drug–price trend, demand remains elastic because customers
demand choices of similar, less expensive medications if authorized by their doctor. The amount of
reimbursement Walgreens receives from Medicare, Medicaid, and Worker's Compensation falls
drastically, as incremental revenues from those sources decreases (Stewart, 2006). According to
Lueck, "Medicare and Medicaid comprise 25 percent of the federal budget, and the government
cannot afford to spend at the current rate" (Lueck, 2008). In order to maintain relationships with
customers, retail pharmacies resorted to buying sections of Medicare Part D insurance companies:

Franklin and Theodore Roosevelt Essay
Franklin and Theodore Roosevelt
Throughout the ages there have been many great leaders. These leaders are powerful in many ways,
with a strong control over the people, and a place in history. But who would have guessed that two
cousins would be some of the greatest government figures ever? Franklin Delano Roosevelt and
Theodore Roosevelt, both American presidents, both American Heroes. Without these dignitaries,
the American advancement into the present day would be incomplete and/or impossible. They gave
people hope through hard times and the spirit to protect their country and one another.

In 1904 Roosevelt was re–elected for a second term in office. In 1906, he passed the Pure Food and
Drug act. This group of laws protected American consumers from harmful food, drugs, and
cosmetics. Roosevelt took advantage of his presidential powers to bust into foreign affairs in Latin
America and resolved the Russo– Japanese war. This valiant act earned him a Nobel Peace Prize.
Roosevelt felt strongly about trade throughout the world. In 1904 the Isthmus of Panama was first
broken by American shovel. After months of negotiation, the Latin American government allowed
the creation of the Panama Canal. The U.S. military and other volunteers did most of the work. But
because of Yellow Fever and Malaria , few workers returned. In 1914 the Canal Zone was finished
and for the first time the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans were flowing together.
As Roosevelt's second term was coming to an end, he picked William Howard Taft as his successor.
Taft preached his ideas to the public, criticizing Roosevelt in his speeches.
Roosevelt, hearing about his partner's insulting speeches, broke from the Republican's and formed a
third party which he called the Progressive Party. The two duked it out in "The most remarkable
political joust that the United States has ever seen..." Meanwhile, very quietly, Woodrow Wilson,
under the Democratic Party was campaigning.

America 's Rapid Industrialization During The Progressive Era
As America entered the 20th century, the country entered a time period known as the Progressive
Era. This era was one defined by political reform and social activism as well as myriad of problems
arising from America's rapid industrialization. During the Progressive era, America faced several
international, political, and social challenges that would set us on the road to the society in which we
now live. During the Depression of the 1890s, the National Association of Manufacturers argued
that the American economy could only expand with new foreign markets. They wanted President
William McKinley to bring American to every corner of the globe. Later on, there was a
reemergence of Cuban independence movement from Spain. President ... Show more content on

However, over time government corruption became common. Reformers like Teddy Roosevelt in
Washington and Governor Hiram Johnson in California responded to an epidemic of political and
civic corruption by expanding the role of government in regulating the economy and in giving
citizens, for the first time, direct access to the legislative process. The federal income tax and the
direct election of senators, for example, were a part of the Populist program, and Prohibition grew
from a pre‐Civil War anti‐alcohol reform tradition. In addition, muckrakers, reform–minded
American journalist who targeted corruption, made Americans aware of the serious failings in
society and built public support for change. Exposés such as Lincoln Steffens ' The Shame of the
Cities (1904), an attack on municipal corruption, and Ida Tarbell 's History of the Standard Oil
Company (1904), which chronicled John D. Rockefeller 's ruthless business practices, often first
appeared in the new mass circulation magazines, such as McClure 's and Cosmopolitan, and were
later published as books. The muckrakers ' impact could be powerful, as in the case of Upton
Sinclair 's The Jungle (1906), a book whose vivid descriptions of working and sanitary conditions in
Chicago 's meatpacking plants led directly to federal laws regulating the industry. Other political
reforms included the direct primary a preliminary

Essay about The Future of Puerto Rico
Whether or not Puerto Rico becomes the 51st state of the United States of America is an important
issue that has been pondered for the last fifty years. Puerto Rico is currently a Commonwealth of the
United States and has been under U.S. rule for a century. Spain ruled Puerto Rico for about 400
years prior to the U.S. take–over in 1898. The current and pertinent issue, though, is whether Puerto
Rico will remain a Commonwealth of the U.S., become the 51st state, or gain independence. In
"Doing Right by Puerto Rico," the former governor of Puerto Rico (1973–1976, 1985–1992) argues
that Congress must take action. He describes the deterioration of the quality of life in Puerto Rico
and explains that it is imperative for a decision to be made ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

To prove that U.S. motives were purer than those of European imperialists, Congress added to the
declaration of war the Teller Amendment, which denied any intention to annex Cuba. Nothing was
said about Puerto Rico because few even knew about the island...On July 25, 1898, American
soldiers went ashore on Puerto Rico, and the conquering General Nelson Miles promised 'to give to
the people of your beautiful island the largest measure of liberty...[and] to bestow upon you...the
liberal institutions of our government.' Believing them, Puerto Ricans welcomed the Americans
(Pastor 1984)."
The promises for liberty and liberal institutions were slow to begin and never fully completed. Two
years after the U.S. began to rule the island; the basic structure of the U.S.–Puerto Rican relationship
was established with the Foraker Act of 1900. The United States was prepared to defend Puerto Rico
and provided for its currency. In fact the currency in Puerto Rico today has remained as the U.S.
dollar. By 1902, trade barriers between the U.S. and Puerto Rico ceased to exist. It was decided that
the Puerto Ricans would not pay federal income taxes. In conjunction with this decision, those
living on the island could not vote for Congress or the President. In 1917, Puerto Ricans became
U.S. citizens and were free to move to the U.S., however those still residing in

On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks refused to surrender her bus seat to a white person. Rosa Parks is
quoted as saying, "I thought about Emmett Till, and I could not go back. My legs and feet were not
hurting, that is a stereotype. I paid the same fare as others, and I felt violated." Her act of civil
disobedience led to the Montgomery Bus Boycott and the emergence of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,
as a powerful leader in the fight for civil rights, all powerful symbols of the civil rights movement.

challenged the sexual and social conventions of the times instigating much social change. (Gillon,

XI. Holden v Hardy was a major case during McKinley's time that dealt with the labor movement,
but in a specific arena. This case upheld a law limiting the work day of a group of miners in Utah,
because it was proven that the conditions they were working under were dangerous. Although, it
was only one victory, a victory it was for the labor movement. In 1898, Williams v Mississippi,
upheld the Mississippi plan, which set a literacy test and poll taxes for Mississippi voters. Though
this plan essentially excluded many Blacks and poor whites, since it applied to everyone, it was
found constitutional and allowed to continue. XII. President McKinley dealt with several important
foreign policy issues during his term. One of the biggest was the Spanish–American War in 1898.
This war initially started when McKinley sent ships and soldiers to have Cubans in their revolt
against a tyrannical Spanish Government. After an American ship was sunk in the conflict, many
Americans called for war against Spain, and McKinley obliged. In the Treaty of Paris, a result of
America winning the short war, the United States gained the territories Puerto Rico and Guam,
bought the Philippines, and remained in military control over Cuba, to which Spain renounced its
claims. In

I Am A True Believer That Commonwealth Is The Best Option...
I am a true believer that Commonwealth is the most perfect option for my homeland, Puerto Rico.
There has been an ongoing debate on the political status of Puerto Rico for years on whether it
should be a state or become independent, but I think it should be put to an end now because I am
going to prove to you the reason why it is best for our island to be a commonwealth. No matter what
anyone says I know that for my own island, we wouldn't survive as a state or as an independent
nation, therefore commonwealth is the best option for us. Since July 1952, Puerto Rico has been a
commonwealth of the U.S, which means that we are colonized under the United States but are still
able to be self–governing. Commonwealth is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
I think this is the most important aspect of being a commonwealth because I don't have to sacrifice
my religion, culture, or language which is something very important to us, Puerto Ricans. Due to the
Jones Act of 1917, we were granted a U.S citizenship, allowing us to travel back and forth between
the U.S and Puerto Rico (Perez y Gonzalez 2011: 1843). This is very important to me and my
family, otherwise my family living in the United States would not be able to come and see us all the
time and vice versa! Therefore, I would never want to lose this benefit that the U.S has given us.
The New Progressive Party consists of those who want Puerto Rico to become a state. This is such a
bad option for an island like Puerto Rico because if we were to become a part of the United States,
English would have to be our primary language and why would I want to sacrifice my language just
to become a state? English is taught in Puerto Rican schools, but it is a foreign language to them.
Less than 20% of Puerto Ricans can speak English fluently, which would make integration into
United States culture very difficult. Not only does it affect language, but it also affects our Puerto
Rican culture. I have no doubt that becoming a state would cause a culture loss because of the
assimilation that will happen. One example of cultural integration would probably be that the
Spanish language would

What Is The Causes Of The Roaring Twenties
The Roaring Twenties
The Era of Wonderful Nonsense was one of the biggest turning points in American history. The
political, social, and economic aspect of society had a major influence on progression and
advancement during this time period. Vast changes led Americans to reform society, and bring forth
a more preferred way of life. With this came about a new meaning of freedom and understanding of
American values.
The 1920's was a time of mixed feelings. There were moments of bliss and moments of despair that
impacted society tremendously. After the victory of WWI a lot of tension in the United States arose.
The overwhelming change post–war, was the main cause of this tension that divided society in half.
It was divided amongst those who could accept change and those who wouldn't.
Before the war America was seen as an imperial power. America had continuously expanded beyond
its borders, which led to the open door policy, Hawaii annexed, and the acquiring of the Philippines
and Puerto Rico. The open door policy allowed free flow of trade, investment, information and
culture. America did it's best to create a welcoming economic environment with caribbean countries,
so that american companies could have stable access to raw material. There was a huge global
movement of people, especially into the United States due to industrial expansion. The U.S. realized
their way to strengthen their role in the global economy was to increase foreign relations.
Everything seemed well in America until World War I.
World War I pitted the Central Powers mainly Germany, Austria–Hungary, and Turkey against the
Allies mainly France, Great Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan, and eventually the United States in 1917. It
ended with the defeat of the Central Powers and a ridiculous amount of slaughter, and destruction.
World War I led to the fall of four great imperial dynasties: Germany, Russia, Austria–Hungary, and
Turkey. This resulted in the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia. In the end Germany got blamed for all
that occurred during the war.The Treaty of Versailles, was the peace document signed at the end of
World War I by the Allies and Germany. It reassigned German's boundaries and assigned liability for
reparations. The German government

Puerto Rican Political Parties
As a child growing up in Puerto Rico I attended many political campaigns with my father. He was
the true meaning of the word fanatic when it came to politics and he had been a politician at an
earlier time in his life also. He believed with every fiber in his body that Puerto Rico should become
the fifty–first state of the United States. My father passed away not seen his dream come true.
In Puerto Rico, political parties are associated to the three status choices. There is the New
Progressive Party that supports statehood, also the Popular Democratic Party for the commonwealth
status and the Puerto Rican Independence Party that prefers as it's name state, independence. These
three ideals have painted the landscape of the island's political history with the pro–statehood and
pro–commonwealth parties with the vast majority of followers. For over 100 years, these two main
choices have divided the island's people and both parties believe that ... Show more content on

The Achievements Of The Nobel Peace Prize
Winning the Nobel Peace Prize is an amazing feat and accomplishments that very few people
receive. Only two US presidents, Theodore Roosevelt, and Barack Obama have received the award.
Roosevelt was the first ever American to win this award. His life story and eventful experiences help
shape him as the person we recognize as an impactful person in history.
Theodore Roosevelt was born on October 27th of 1858 into a Dutch family living in New York. As a
child, he struggled with his asthma. Many of his family members called him "Teddy", a name he
wasn't found of. However, that name latched on until people used his nickname to make a toy many
of us are familiar with, a Teddy Bear. His father, Theodore Roosevelt Sr., knew he was very
intelligent but thought he did not have the body to match. He told him to "make his body" by
exercising, so young Theodore did and became stronger. This led him to gain an interest in wrestling
and weightlifting. When Theodore became a teenager he also became interested in gymnastics and
continued to enjoy sports into his college years and beyond. Roosevelt went to Harvard College and
spent 4 years there. At Harvard, he studied natural science as his major at first, however when his
father died he switched his major to law. He excelled in sports and education and found a good
balance between the two. Roosevelt had an interesting and influential family that helped him be the
person we know starting with his first child. On February 12, 1884,

U.s. Foreign Policy During World War II Essay
The turn of the twentieth century brought about changes in all aspects of American domestic society
and especially in the course of U.S. Foreign Policy. The factors leading up to American involvement
in the Spanish–American War of 1898 and in World War II, respectively, mark drastic shifts in
domestic attitudes towards America's role in the world. Ostensibly, the decisions to intervene in
Cuba in 1898 and in Europe in 1917 were both products of aggressions against Americans at sea,
endangered economic interests, and the fear of European encroachment upon the Western
Hemisphere. Domestically, however, the hyper masculinity and expansionist fervor precipitating the
U.S. decision to intervene in Cuba contrasts sharply with the reform–driven decision–making
process which preceded U.S. entry into WWI. Both cases of military intervention constitute acts of
imperialism, albeit in different senses, as the underlying goal of the United States' 1898 intervention
in Cuba was physical expansion, while America's longstanding quest for an Ideological Empire was
born with entrance into WWI.
Indeed, contemporaries frequently pointed to violations of U.S. neutrality at sea as the most
shocking hostility of belligerents. The sensationalist newspapers of the 1890s quickly published
dramatized accounts of Spain's alleged involvement in the sinking of the USS Maine, which resulted
in the deaths of 261 American crewmembers. The battleship had been sent to Havana Harbor in

Puerto Ricans Immigrating to America Essay
Puerto Ricans Immigrating to America
The migration of Puerto Ricans to the United States occurred in two major waves. The first wave
was in the 1910s–1940s and the second wave was from the 1960s to the 1990s. Each wave of
migrants brought new generations of Puerto Ricans to the United States. Both waves of migrants
believed that they were going to live a better life in America and migrated to major cities such as
New York City, Chicago, Hartford, etc. The early migrants looked for industrial jobs such as in cigar
factories while the later migrants found agricultural work such as in tobacco fields. The
communities in which they lived grew larger and larger due to chain migration and because of this,
the need for politics evolved. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...

Theodore Roosevelt And The United States
Theodore Roosevelt, kenned as "Teddy" or "T.R." was born in New York City, NY on October 27,
1858. From birth until his tardy teens, Roosevelt suffered greatly from asthma, was frail and sickly,
and was near–sighted, which coerced him to wear glasses. His father took him for rides in the night
to avail him breathe with fresh air and inspirited him to build up his body with strenuous exercises
and sports in efforts to build his body and mind. In 1876, Roosevelt was accepted to Harvard
College. After graduating, he decided to enter politics and in 1881, at the age of 23, he won election
to the first of three terms in the Incipient York State Assembly as a Republican. In 1889, Roosevelt

Secretary of the Navy, where he commenced to genuinely show his aggressiveness. As the Assistant
Secretary of the Navy, Roosevelt coerced the U.S. to build up the Navy fleet to dispense Spainish

The Spanish American War And The Civil War
1.The Spanish–American War was fought in 1898. It was a very short war and had very little deaths
compared to the previous wars and battles. The Spanish–American War only lasted one hundred and
thirteen days. Even though the Spanish American war was a short war, it had many of very useful
world–changing outcomes. The conflict began when the Cubans wanted independence from Spain.
Spain would not give Cubans their independence. The Cubans go tired of begging so eventually, the
United States got involved, and it was an all–out war against Spain. Toward the end of the
nineteenth–century, tensions were high between Spain and Cuba. Jose Marti wanted independence
from Spain and the only way they believed they could do it was by declaring war in 1895. Many of
Americans supported the Cubans who were struggling for freedom because lots of Americans were
or still are in their shoes or knew who it felt to not have freedom. The newspaper journalists played
a huge part at the beginning of the Spanish American War as well as during the war. The journalists
published various articles talking bad about the Spanish government and published exaggerated
stories of how the government was treating their citizens in Spain. One publisher wrote a letter to
the ambassador in Spain expressing how he felt about him. He said that the ambassador was a weak
leader, and he did not know anything about politics. The letter started up Americans aggressive
nationalism. Not too long after that incident, an

Roosevelt, Jefferson, Washington, And Fdr Essay
When presenting the question of who deserves the title of best President of the United States, one
would not be surprised to find Lincoln, Jefferson, Washington, and FDR as the frontrunners. While
each of these presidents was undisputedly successful and groundbreaking in their own right, all fall
short to America's first modern president– Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt, assuming office at the
turn of the century, redefined and reimagined the role of the president and the executive officialdom.
By expanding the powers of the presidency, Roosevelt was able to move the country forward in both
the international arena and on the home front. Roosevelt's vast success can greatly be attributed to
his charisma, character, and persuasion skills. He understood that the art of governing was truly the
power to persuade, and he mastered the trade. Roosevelt not only improved life domestically as he
fought against inequality and corrupt business practices, but he also achieved his goal of gaining
influence abroad, thus earning the United States a powerful platform on the global stage. Roosevelt's
natural leadership, charm, bravery, and compassion combined with his thorough understanding of
the country's needs, both for the individual and for the long–term well being of the country, made
him the most successful president in United States history.
Roosevelt, taking office in 1901 after the assassination of President McKinley, inherited a unique

Adam Smith And Karl Marx
In his book Born in Blood & Fire, John Chasteen defines Progress as any transformation that made
Latin America similar to European and US models, resulting in human improvement. These
transformations included the application of advanced technology, new political aspects, and
economic growth. Neocolonialism was born from Progress, which can be explained as the influence
foreign countries had on Latin America's colonization. There was, however, different views on
which way Progress should be achieved Latin America. Adam Smith and Karl Marx are examples of
the main two views. Adam Smith, a Scottish Philosopher, was a critique of controlled markets and
supported the idea that consumers should be able to engage in a free market in order to achieve
overall self– profit. As a believer in capitalism, Smith also viewed private property and overall self–
interest as positives. Implementing these ideas without the interference of the government, Smith
believed, led to unlimited wealth and the most desirable economic outcome. Karl Marx, on the
contrary, believed that poor people suffered for the benefit of the higher social class. Co–author of
the famous document, The Communist Manifesto, Marx supported communism, the abortion of
distinguished social classes, and developed into one of the widely known critics of capitalism; Marx
believe that the idea of capitalism gave an advantage to the people who were already rich and gave
no opportunity for the working class to rise socially or

Essay on The Republican Party
The Republican Party
The Republican party is one of the two major POLITICAL PARTIES in the United States, the other
being the DEMOCRATIC PARTY party. It is popularly known as the GOP, from its earlier
nickname Grand Old Party. From the time it ran its first PRESIDENTIAL candidate, John C.
Fremont, in 1856, until the inauguration of Republican George BUSH in 1989, Republican
presidents occupied the WHITE HOUSE for 80 years. Traditionally, Republican strength came
primarily from New England and the Midwest. After World War II, however, it greatly increased in
the Sunbelt states and the West. Generally speaking, after World War I the Republican party became
the more conservative of the two major parties, with its support coming from ... Show more content

The new party was a success from the beginning. In the 1854 congressional elections 44
Republicans were elected as a part of the anti–Nebraskan majority in the HOUSE OF
REPRESENTATIVES, and several Republicans were elected to the SENATE and to various state
houses. In 1856, at the first Republican national convention, Sen. John C. Fremont was nominated
for the presidency but was defeated by Democrat James BUCHANAN. During the campaign the
northern wing of the KNOW–NOTHING PARTY split off and endorsed the Republican ticket,
making the Republicans the principal antislavery party.
Two days after the inauguration of James Buchanan, the Supreme Court handed down the Dred
Scott v. Sandford decision, which increased sectional dissension and was denounced by the
Republicans. At this time the nation was also gripped by economic chaos. Business blamed tariff
reductions, and Republican leaders called for greater tariff protection. The split in the Democratic
party over the issue of slavery continued, and in 1858 the Republicans won control of the House of
Representatives for the first time. One Republican who failed that year was Abraham LINCOLN,
defeated in his bid for a U.S. Senate seat by Stephen A. Douglas.
Lincoln, the Civil War, and Reconstruction

presidential nomination of Abraham Lincoln. The

Essay on Puerto Rico Independence?
To argue on Puerto Rican Independence, Commonwealth, or Statehood, we must first learn of the
history of Puerto Rico. Growing up I was very ignorant about Puerto Rico. It wasn't till I was in the
Navy and got stationed in Puerto Rico did I really find out the small Caribbean island. Although
Puerto Rico has an extensive history, I will only give a brief synopsis of it: In November 1493
Christopher Columbus discovered the island of Puerto Rico for the country of Spain. It remained a
colonization of Spain until 1898 when Spain ceded the island to the United States after the Spanish–
American war. In 1917 Puerto Rican's became U.S. Citizens, but only 24% consider themselves as

However, the American citizens of Puerto Rico are still very far from attaining the same level of
economic prosperity other American citizens enjoy in the other 50 states. Becoming a state would
give Puerto Rico the opportunity of improving its economic situation."
Politically, there are several advantages to becoming a state. The first is that Puerto Rico will have a
voice in the Congress with at least seven represenatives and two senators. Currently, Puerto Rico
only has a resident commissioner in Congress. He has a voice, but no vote. Puerto Rico has no
electoral votes in the Presidential elections. Becoming a State would remove Puerto Rico form
under the Territorial "claws" of the U.S. Constitution, and would put Puerto Rico on the
same political footing as the other 50 states. This is the single most compelling argument for Puerto
Rican statehood that Puerto Ricans have.
CONS OF STATEHOOD
There are several economic reasons that can be argued against Puerto Rico becoming a state. First,
the current unemployment rate is 11.7%, which would rank the highest in the nation. Puerto Rico
has the lowest per capita income at around $7000, half of the poorest U.S. state (Mississippi). Thus
it would cost the U.S. Government approximately 3–4 billion a year for 10 years to get Puerto Rico
up to par with the other states. The 936 tax code, which grants U.S. companies federal tax
exemptions for their operations in Puerto Rico,

Simpson's Bambaata A Review Of Hip-Hop
1983: "Afrika Bambaataa spins the wheels of steel, his vintage scratching skills and guru–like vibe
turning Chic's Good Times into a mass call–and–response. As fists pump the air and a smile appears
on every face, a sweaty Liverpool rock venue is transformed into a euphoric New York block party."
(Simpson). A scene from his 1982 global tour, where Bambaataa brought the principals of his
Universal Zulu Nation abroad, Simpson exclaims on how Bambaataa, former gang warlord, founder
of the black nationalist Universal Zulu Nation, and "Master of the Records" got thousands of
oppressed people from all different parts of the worlds, to pump their fists to a synchronized beat,
soon to be distilled in one message: peace, love, unity, and having fun. Simpson describes, in his

through the intersection of music movements hip–hop and rock, the merging of peoples in the
1980s. In the 1970s, hip–hop was as a voice for marginalized African American and Puerto Rican
youth. This movement was a generational revolt against the status quo, and in the midst of it
becoming global, it became commercial, about making money. Rather than valuing the music's
effects on the people, as the review of Bambaataa did, TOURE shows how the 1980s–1990s music
industry had begun to commercialize it, stripping it of its focus on the backbeat and transforming it
into something else. Rather than reflecting the voices and needs of youth at the time, it became
something unachievable – above the people, effectively diluting its political

The Collective Activity Was The Dawn Of American Imperialism
The topic I examined in the collective activity was the "Dawn of American Imperialism." The dawn
of American imperialism was a time of expansion and also a time of war and racism. During this
time America was increasing "its power by gaining control over other areas of the world" (Merriam–
Webster). America was fighting a war in the Philippines to take control because Americans thought
Filipinos' could not govern themselves and were uneducated. Also America was trying to annex
Hawaii even though the majority of Hawaiians were against the annexation. During this time people
and companies such as Josiah strong, Rudard Kipling and Pearl's soap were spreading racism and
the belief that Anglo–Saxons were a superior race and should "impress its institutions upon man–
kind" (Josiah Strong, "Our Country"). There were many primary sources that I consulted while
studying my topic. In the text Voices of Freedom by Eric Foner I read about and studied the views of
Josiah strong, Emilio Aguinaldo and Rudard Kipling. I studied an article titled The 1897 Petitions
Protesting Annexation by Noenoe K. Silva from the University of Hawaii library website. I also
studied two images in chapter 17 of Foner, Eric. Give Me Liberty! Online. The first image was titled
"A Trifle Embarrassed" and the second image was a Pears' Soap ad image titled "The White Man's

The Similarities And Differences Between California And...
To compare the similarities and differences between California and Puerto Rico you would have to
fully understand how they both work. How they were made, what the laws are, and how exactly the
government functions. Many people know that Puerto Rico is a U.S Territory, although many people
do not exactly know what that means. A territory is defined as an area of land under the jurisdiction
of a ruler or state. The ruler for this specific territory is whomever the president of the United States
is at the time. These territories are not single states and do not fall under the same jurisdiction as the
states do. They have their own government that U.S. helps them run.
Puerto Rico is about 29 times smaller than California. One state housing more than 39 million
people is so much larger than a single territory. California is broken up into 482 cities. Four new
cities have been formed since 2004. The largest city in California being Los Angeles currently has a
population of 4 million people making it the second largest city in the United States. Puerto Rico
coming in with only seventy–eight cities has a small total population of 4 million people. The largest
city being San Jose with a population of 389,714 people. The city of Los Angeles has the same
population as the entire territory of Puerto Rico. Putting the size difference between the two into
perspective. The population helps the state and territory run. Without such a large population in
California they would not be able

Labor Unions And The American Labor Relations Act Of...
Before the 1930s, labor unions had little to no voice in the contracts of industrialized companies.
Labor Unions "are organizations of workers whose primary objectives are to improve the pecuniary
and nonpecuniary conditions or employment among their members" (Ehrenberg & Smith, pg. 451).
The Christian Labour Association of Canada (CLAC) and the United Automobiles Workers (UAW)
are different unions in Canada and the Unites States. Even though they have some similarities, the
two groups have many differences as well. Some similarities include how they bargain and
negotiate. However, they differ in the type of union, what they stand for, how large they are, why
and when they started, and what they negotiate for. Unions were finally able to form in the Unites
States because the National Labor Relations Act of 1935 passed, which "required employers to
bargain with unions that represented the majority of their employees" (Ehrenberg & Smith, pg. 453).
Because of the National Labor Relations Act, unions could legally form and be recognized by
employers. The United Automobiles Workers (UAW) began in May of 1935 in Detroit, Michigan.
Initially, 200 delegates from different automobile companies met in Detroit to establish the UAW,
and its power over negotiating strengthen just a few years after forming. The UAW created a union
for auto plant workers, which made them an industrial union. The UAW represents different types of

Gilded Age saw rapid industrialization, urbanization, the construction of great transcontinental

Mechanization and marketing were the keys to success in this age: companies that could mass–
produce products and convince people to buy them accumulated enormous amounts of wealth, while
companies that could not were forced out of business by brutal competition. Railroads were the
linchpin in the new industrialized economy. The railroad industry enabled raw materials, finished
products, food, and people to travel cross–country in a matter of days, as opposed to the months or
years that it took just prior to the Civil War. By the end of the war, the United States boasted some
35,000 miles of track, mostly in the industrialized North. By the turn of the century, that number had
jumped to almost 200,000 miles, linking the North, South, and West. With these railroads making
travel easier, millions of rural Americans flocked to the cities, and by 1900, nearly 40 percent of the
population lived in urban areas. By the twentieth century, the rise of big business and the large
migration of Americans from the countryside to the cities caused a shift in political awareness, as
elected officials saw the need to address the growing economic and social problems that developed
along with the urban boom. Progressives believed that the government needed to take a strong,

Judicial Overhaul
If the opportunity to implement a new judicial body were to arise, there would be a great deal of
components required to formulate a new judicial body. Drawing from different states in America, a
conglomerate of components would be called into service to draft this new body. The states in
question that will be used in this reformat will be the states of, Florida, Texas, and Illinois. These
states contain a simplified and durable judicial hierarchy. Successful implementation of these ideals
are very likely if they were to occur.

The Cultural Influences Of Cuba Essay
Cuba is one of the best places to visit. Because they have so many things to do. like going to the
beach and swimming and picking up hot Cuban girls. The food in Cuba is really also really healthy.
The foods are a blend of Native American Taino food, Spanish, African, and Caribbean cuisines.
Some Cuban recipes share spices and techniques with Spanish and African cooking, with some
Caribbean influence in spice and flavor. This results in a unique, interesting and flavorful blend of
the several different cultural influences, with strong similarities with the cuisine of the neighboring
Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. As a result of the colonization of Cuba by Spain, one of the
main influences on the cuisine is from Spain. Along with Spain, other culinary influences include
Africa, from the Africans that were brought to Cuba as slaves, and French, from the French colonists
that came to Cuba from Haiti. A typical meal would consist of rice and beans, cooked together or
apart. Dolphinarium, Kayo Naranjo is one of the best things to do in Cuba, like visit dolphins to play
with them and swim. Cuba is a good play to have family time because there are so many monuments
and sites to see with your family for good memories

New France was the area colonized by France in North America during a period extending from the
exploration of the Saint Lawrence River, by Jacques Cartier in 1534, to the cession of New France
to Spain and Britain in 1763. At its peak in 1712 (before the Treaty of Utrecht), the territory of New
France extended from Newfoundland to the Rocky Mountains and from Hudson Bay to the Gulf of
Mexico. The territory was divided in five colonies, each with its own administration: Canada,
Acadia, Hudson Bay, Newfoundland and Louisiana.
Also during this period, French Huguenots, sailing under Jean Ribault, attempted to found a colony
in what became the southeastern coast of the United States. Arriving in 1562, they established the
ephemeral colony of Charlesfort on Parris Island in what is now South Carolina. When this failed,
most of the colonists followed René Goulaine de Laudonnière and moved south, founding the
colony of Fort Caroline at the mouth of the St. Johns River in what is now Jacksonville, Florida on
June 22, 1564. Fort Caroline was destroyed in 1565 by the Spanish under Pedro Menéndez de
Avilés, who moved in from St. Augustine, founded to the south earlier in the year.

Theodore Roosevelt And The Progressive Era
Upon the arrival of the Progressive Era, America shared several common characteristics of the
industrialized countries: drastically increased population, overcrowded cities, poor working
conditions, and significant economic disparity. Three presidents – Theodore Roosevelt, William
Taft, and Woodrow Wilson – during the Progressive Era made essential domestic reforms and
launched new foreign policies in order to construct America into a more prosperous country and a
leading power around the globe. A driving force in the Progressive Era, Theodore Roosevelt
believed that the government had the right to regulate big business and that the government should
use its resources to help achieve economic and social justice. In his first term, he launched the
Square Deal, which focused on the control of corporations, the consumer protection, and the
conservation of natural resources. In order to achieve his goal of controlling the large corporations
and railroad companies, Congress, under Roosevelt's urge, created the Department of Commerce
and Labor to monitor corporations, help dissolve monopolies, and promote fair competition between
companies. At the same year, Roosevelt initialized the Elkins Act of 1903 to end the practice of
railroad granting shipping rebates to certain companies, and three years later, Theodore's
administration issued the Hepburn Act, which gave the Interstate Commerce Commission the power
to regulate shipping rates on railroads. The second element in the

Americans, at least there had been the rest of the mainland to fill up. With the ending of the frontier
and the completion of the settlement of the West the impulse to further expansion spilled out over
America's borders. Shortly after the end of the Civil War the U.S. purchased Alaska and began to
develop commercial interests in the Caribbean and the Pacific in places like Cuba, Hawaii, Midway,
Samoa, the Virgin Islands and the Dominican Republic. A great part of the impetus for expansion
came from a rather unlikely source, naval officer Captain Alfred Thayer Mahan. Founder of the
Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, Captain Mahan began to write widely read and
applauded books and articles that called for America to develop its strength on the basis of sea
power, which he found to have been a decisive force throughout history in making nations and
empires great and long lasting. Mahan wrote a number of books based on the theme of the
"Influence of Sea Power Upon History." Mahan's basic idea was that to remain great and strong in
an ever more competitive world, America needed a powerful maritime force, both naval and
commercial, and an overseas infrastructure

Theodore Roosevelt Ideology
Theodore Roosevelt exemplified the sentiments of the turn of the century through his electrifyingly
captivating leadership and progressive ideology. His populist ideas and policies against the very
powerful monopolies intrigued people and began a strong progressive movement. Even though he
was the namesake for the well–know Teddy Bear, he was known for being strong and upfront when
he thought something was wrong; he was a very morally driven politician. Theodore presumed to
expose fraud and corruption in any political office he entered. The Republican party even went as
far as to vote him into the vice presidency to keep him from running to be president but their plan
would fail as not too long after the inauguration, McKinley was ... Show more content on

During the strike of coal miners of 1902, America's source of power was threatened thus inducing
the president to take action. Unions asked for certain terms, such as lower working hours, safer
conditions, and higher wages. Theodore was caught in the middle of the fighting between the
workers, coal union and the coal mine owners. He did not have the power to intervene so instead he
summoned for representatives on both sides to meet and come to an agreement. He, too, attended
that meeting even though he was injured and in a wheelchair from a prior traffic accident. "This
meeting marked the turn of the U.S. Government from strikebreaker to peacemaker in industrial
disputes" (Grossman, 2015). Rather than take the stance many previous presidents like, Andrew
Jackson, Rutherford B. Hayes, and Grover Cleveland, had taken in favor of the industries, Roosevelt
choose to seek peace, which he thought was in the public's best interest. Though the meeting seemed
to have ended in the coal operators' favor (no compromise), Theodore continued to seek help to get
to a solution. He was even prepared to send the U.S. army into the mines and seize power to get the
coal mines started again. But alas, the operators decided to compromise and make what would
become the Anthracite Coal Commission, that would oversee the

The Issue Of Puerto Rico
Puerto Rico is a territory of the United States since 1898 and in order to change that status citizens
of the territory must vote in a plebiscite, a special referendum. The three options available to choose
from were to become a state, to remain a territory, or to become an independent nation (Martin). In
the November 6, 2012 plebiscite held in Puerto Rico, 54% of the population said that do not like the
current commonwealth status of the island (Alexandrino). The next question offered to the
population were three solutions following those of the United Nations guidelines. Of the three
options, statehood received the highest vote reigning in 61% of the votes. However, over 480,000
people did not answer the second question (Alexandrino). ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

citizenship including political power and social programs, native culture will be strengthened, and
the economic power of Puerto Rico will rise.
Puerto Rico has undergone a recent economic downturn. The most recent unemployment rate, from
December 2014, was 14.4%, which is down from 16% in 2013 but in the grand scheme it is not
much better. According to studies by the New Progressive Party "the island should attain a
(economic) growth rate of 2.2 to 3.5% faster" through statehood (Regis). Economic growth will
affect population directly because their standard of living will rise due to an average increase of
income. It will also provide them and their family with a greater number of job opportunities. Even
though population will now be subject to income taxes, Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi
assures that increased property values and economic growth will "offset any kind of impact that
federal income taxes could have," ("Puerto Rico Could Change Congress If Made A State"). Income
taxes will have an even slighter affect because of the Earned Income Tax Credit. This rewards
eligible low–income families with cash refunds and approximately two thirds of the population is
already eligible ("Issue Briefing: Puerto Rico). The addition of income taxes will give the Puerto
Rican government more power to build up the state's infrastructure. The economy of

Progressivism Was Motivated By Various Progressive Ideas...

  • 1. Progressivism Was Motivated By Various Progressive Ideas... Progressivism was the change development that kept running from the late 19th century through the main many years of the 20th century, which driving educated people and social reformers in the United States looked to address the monetary, political, and social inquiries that had emerged with regards to the quick changes carried with the Industrial Revolution and the development of current private enterprise in America. The Progressives trusted that these progressions denoted the end of the old request and required the formation of another request suitable for the new mechanical age. Expansionism was motivated by various progressive ideas. Imperialism was an adjournment of the movement to direct and normalize society, economics, and government. Order, Regulation, and World Economy The United States dominated the world market in producing items by 1900. They produced petroleum and agricultural machinery to sewing machines and cameras. Foreign investments tremendously increased from $700 million in 1897 to 2.5 billion in 1908; and again to $ 3.5 billion my 1914. Businesses in the U.S. eventually controlled about 78 percent of all the mines in Mexico (silver, lead, and copper) by 1917 and about 58 percent of oil production. The U.S investment nearly approached $1 billion toward just Mexico alone. Due to the laissez–faire policies the American interest in international market places needed protection. • 3. Jackie Robinson Contributions to the Development of America The first man to break the color barrier in Major League Baseball in the 20th century, Jackie Robinson is, to this day, one of the most celebrated baseball players in history. It is only a few times in one's life that they have the chance to know of someone who's character could be digested in simply a sentence. Especially a complex person, a complex athelte. Although there aren't many people like Jackie Robinson. "A life is not important," he said, "except in the impact it has on other lives." With that said, there are a small number of people, and zero athlete's who have influenced more lifes. Due to being the first African American man to play in the MLB, Jackie recieved a ton of critism and negative attention all through his career. However, Robinson managed to turn his cheek to all things negative, and went on to chage the face of America's favorite past time forever. Jakcie signed with the Dodgers, August 28, 1945 "'Launching the experiment in Montreal was more then fortuitous. It was destiny in some ways. The security and respect shown towards us allowed Jackie to perform at the peak of his ability'" Mrs. Robinson claimed. Soon enough, Newspapers reffered to Jackie as the "colored comet" or "the dark destroyer." Still he disreguarded all racial slurs, it helped that he signed a conteact prohibitting him from responding. On March 17th, 1946 he played his first professional game in Daytona. (WAG Annual Reports, 2007) Mark Wagner, VP of Operations, announced that after reviewing the 2007 compiled transfer logs of the company, "72% of all prescription transfers [in 2007] are competitor coupon–related issues " (WAG Annual Report, 2007) Walgreens remained static in their decision to offer any type of compensation to new customers or transferred prescriptions until October 2008. Walgreens customers receive an average of four prescriptions on a monthly basis from the pharmacy (WAG Annual Reports, 2007). With 65% of the sales revenue of the company coming from the pharmacy, Walgreens declines to bargain with out–of–pocket customers over price. Regardless of a climbing prescription drug–price trend, demand remains elastic because customers demand choices of similar, less expensive medications if authorized by their doctor. The amount of reimbursement Walgreens receives from Medicare, Medicaid, and Worker's Compensation falls drastically, as incremental revenues from those sources decreases (Stewart, 2006). According to Lueck, "Medicare and Medicaid comprise 25 percent of the federal budget, and the government cannot afford to spend at the current rate" (Lueck, 2008). In order to maintain relationships with customers, retail pharmacies resorted to buying sections of Medicare Part D insurance companies: AARP Walgreens vs. CVS Caremark (Caremark Rx Inc., 2007). Roosevelt felt strongly about trade throughout the world. In 1904 the Isthmus of Panama was first broken by American shovel. After months of negotiation, the Latin American government allowed the creation of the Panama Canal. The U.S. military and other volunteers did most of the work. But because of Yellow Fever and Malaria , few workers returned. In 1914 the Canal Zone was finished and for the first time the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans were flowing together. As Roosevelt's second term was coming to an end, he picked William Howard Taft as his successor. Taft preached his ideas to the public, criticizing Roosevelt in his speeches. Roosevelt, hearing about his partner's insulting speeches, broke from the Republican's and formed a third party which he called the Progressive Party. • 9. America 's Rapid Industrialization During The Progressive Era As America entered the 20th century, the country entered a time period known as the Progressive Era. This era was one defined by political reform and social activism as well as myriad of problems arising from America's rapid industrialization. During the Progressive era, America faced several international, political, and social challenges that would set us on the road to the society in which we now live. During the Depression of the 1890s, the National Association of Manufacturers argued that the American economy could only expand with new foreign markets. They wanted President William McKinley to bring American to every corner of the globe. Later on, there was a reemergence of Cuban independence movement from Spain. President ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... However, over time government corruption became common. Reformers like Teddy Roosevelt in Washington and Governor Hiram Johnson in California responded to an epidemic of political and civic corruption by expanding the role of government in regulating the economy and in giving citizens, for the first time, direct access to the legislative process. The federal income tax and the direct election of senators, for example, were a part of the Populist program, and Prohibition grew from a pre‐Civil War anti‐alcohol reform tradition. In addition, muckrakers, reform–minded American journalist who targeted corruption, made Americans aware of the serious failings in society and built public support for change. Exposés such as Lincoln Steffens ' The Shame of the Cities (1904), an attack on municipal corruption, and Ida Tarbell 's History of the Standard Oil Company (1904), which chronicled John D. Rockefeller 's ruthless business practices, often first appeared in the new mass circulation magazines, such as McClure 's and Cosmopolitan, and were later published as books. The muckrakers ' impact could be powerful, as in the case of Upton Sinclair 's The Jungle (1906), a book whose vivid descriptions of working and sanitary conditions in Chicago 's meatpacking plants led directly to federal laws regulating the industry. • 11. Essay about The Future of Puerto Rico Whether or not Puerto Rico becomes the 51st state of the United States of America is an important issue that has been pondered for the last fifty years. Puerto Rico is currently a Commonwealth of the United States and has been under U.S. rule for a century. Spain ruled Puerto Rico for about 400 years prior to the U.S. take–over in 1898. The current and pertinent issue, though, is whether Puerto Rico will remain a Commonwealth of the U.S., become the 51st state, or gain independence. In "Doing Right by Puerto Rico," the former governor of Puerto Rico (1973–1976, 1985–1992) argues that Congress must take action. He describes the deterioration of the quality of life in Puerto Rico and explains that it is imperative for a decision to be made ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... To prove that U.S. motives were purer than those of European imperialists, Congress added to the declaration of war the Teller Amendment, which denied any intention to annex Cuba. Nothing was said about Puerto Rico because few even knew about the island...On July 25, 1898, American soldiers went ashore on Puerto Rico, and the conquering General Nelson Miles promised 'to give to the people of your beautiful island the largest measure of liberty...[and] to bestow upon you...the liberal institutions of our government.' Believing them, Puerto Ricans welcomed the Americans (Pastor 1984)." The promises for liberty and liberal institutions were slow to begin and never fully completed. Two years after the U.S. began to rule the island; the basic structure of the U.S.–Puerto Rican relationship was established with the Foraker Act of 1900. The United States was prepared to defend Puerto Rico and provided for its currency. In fact the currency in Puerto Rico today has remained as the U.S. dollar. By 1902, trade barriers between the U.S. and Puerto Rico ceased to exist. It was decided that the Puerto Ricans would not pay federal income taxes. In conjunction with this decision, those living on the island could not vote for Congress or the President. Holden v Hardy was a major case during McKinley's time that dealt with the labor movement, but in a specific arena. This case upheld a law limiting the work day of a group of miners in Utah, because it was proven that the conditions they were working under were dangerous. Although, it was only one victory, a victory it was for the labor movement. In 1898, Williams v Mississippi, upheld the Mississippi plan, which set a literacy test and poll taxes for Mississippi voters. Though this plan essentially excluded many Blacks and poor whites, since it applied to everyone, it was found constitutional and allowed to continue. XII. President McKinley dealt with several important foreign policy issues during his term. One of the biggest was the Spanish–American War in 1898. This war initially started when McKinley sent ships and soldiers to have Cubans in their revolt against a tyrannical Spanish Government. After an American ship was sunk in the conflict, many Americans called for war against Spain, and McKinley obliged. • 17. I Am A True Believer That Commonwealth Is The Best Option... I am a true believer that Commonwealth is the most perfect option for my homeland, Puerto Rico. There has been an ongoing debate on the political status of Puerto Rico for years on whether it should be a state or become independent, but I think it should be put to an end now because I am going to prove to you the reason why it is best for our island to be a commonwealth. No matter what anyone says I know that for my own island, we wouldn't survive as a state or as an independent nation, therefore commonwealth is the best option for us. Since July 1952, Puerto Rico has been a commonwealth of the U.S, which means that we are colonized under the United States but are still able to be self–governing. Commonwealth is ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... I think this is the most important aspect of being a commonwealth because I don't have to sacrifice my religion, culture, or language which is something very important to us, Puerto Ricans. Due to the Jones Act of 1917, we were granted a U.S citizenship, allowing us to travel back and forth between the U.S and Puerto Rico (Perez y Gonzalez 2011: 1843). This is very important to me and my family, otherwise my family living in the United States would not be able to come and see us all the time and vice versa! Therefore, I would never want to lose this benefit that the U.S has given us. The New Progressive Party consists of those who want Puerto Rico to become a state. This is such a bad option for an island like Puerto Rico because if we were to become a part of the United States, English would have to be our primary language and why would I want to sacrifice my language just to become a state? English is taught in Puerto Rican schools, but it is a foreign language to them. Less than 20% of Puerto Ricans can speak English fluently, which would make integration into United States culture very difficult. Not only does it affect language, but it also affects our Puerto Rican culture. I have no doubt that becoming a state would cause a culture loss because of the assimilation that will happen. One example of cultural integration would probably be that the Spanish language would ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 21. What Is The Causes Of The Roaring Twenties The Roaring Twenties The Era of Wonderful Nonsense was one of the biggest turning points in American history. The political, social, and economic aspect of society had a major influence on progression and advancement during this time period. Vast changes led Americans to reform society, and bring forth a more preferred way of life. With this came about a new meaning of freedom and understanding of American values. The 1920's was a time of mixed feelings. There were moments of bliss and moments of despair that impacted society tremendously. After the victory of WWI a lot of tension in the United States arose. The overwhelming change post–war, was the main cause of this tension that divided society in half. It was divided amongst those who could accept change and those who wouldn't. Before the war America was seen as an imperial power. America had continuously expanded beyond its borders, which led to the open door policy, Hawaii annexed, and the acquiring of the Philippines and Puerto Rico. The open door policy allowed free flow of trade, investment, information and culture. America did it's best to create a welcoming economic environment with caribbean countries, so that american companies could have stable access to raw material. There was a huge global movement of people, especially into the United States due to industrial expansion. The U.S. realized their way to strengthen their role in the global economy was to increase foreign relations. Everything seemed well in America until World War I. World War I pitted the Central Powers mainly Germany, Austria–Hungary, and Turkey against the Allies mainly France, Great Britain, Russia, Italy, Japan, and eventually the United States in 1917. It ended with the defeat of the Central Powers and a ridiculous amount of slaughter, and destruction. World War I led to the fall of four great imperial dynasties: Germany, Russia, Austria–Hungary, and Turkey. This resulted in the Bolshevik Revolution in Russia. In the end Germany got blamed for all that occurred during the war.The Treaty of Versailles, was the peace document signed at the end of World War I by the Allies and Germany. Only two US presidents, Theodore Roosevelt, and Barack Obama have received the award. Roosevelt was the first ever American to win this award. His life story and eventful experiences help shape him as the person we recognize as an impactful person in history. Theodore Roosevelt was born on October 27th of 1858 into a Dutch family living in New York. As a child, he struggled with his asthma. Many of his family members called him "Teddy", a name he wasn't found of. However, that name latched on until people used his nickname to make a toy many of us are familiar with, a Teddy Bear. His father, Theodore Roosevelt Sr., knew he was very intelligent but thought he did not have the body to match. He told him to "make his body" by exercising, so young Theodore did and became stronger. This led him to gain an interest in wrestling and weightlifting. When Theodore became a teenager he also became interested in gymnastics and continued to enjoy sports into his college years and beyond. Roosevelt went to Harvard College and spent 4 years there. At Harvard, he studied natural science as his major at first, however when his father died he switched his major to law. He excelled in sports and education and found a good balance between the two. • 27. U.s. Foreign Policy During World War II Essay The turn of the twentieth century brought about changes in all aspects of American domestic society and especially in the course of U.S. Foreign Policy. The factors leading up to American involvement in the Spanish–American War of 1898 and in World War II, respectively, mark drastic shifts in domestic attitudes towards America's role in the world. Ostensibly, the decisions to intervene in Cuba in 1898 and in Europe in 1917 were both products of aggressions against Americans at sea, endangered economic interests, and the fear of European encroachment upon the Western Hemisphere. Domestically, however, the hyper masculinity and expansionist fervor precipitating the U.S. decision to intervene in Cuba contrasts sharply with the reform–driven decision–making process which preceded U.S. entry into WWI. Both cases of military intervention constitute acts of imperialism, albeit in different senses, as the underlying goal of the United States' 1898 intervention in Cuba was physical expansion, while America's longstanding quest for an Ideological Empire was born with entrance into WWI. Indeed, contemporaries frequently pointed to violations of U.S. neutrality at sea as the most shocking hostility of belligerents. The sensationalist newspapers of the 1890s quickly published dramatized accounts of Spain's alleged involvement in the sinking of the USS Maine, which resulted in the deaths of 261 American crewmembers. The first wave was in the 1910s–1940s and the second wave was from the 1960s to the 1990s. Each wave of migrants brought new generations of Puerto Ricans to the United States. Both waves of migrants believed that they were going to live a better life in America and migrated to major cities such as New York City, Chicago, Hartford, etc. The early migrants looked for industrial jobs such as in cigar factories while the later migrants found agricultural work such as in tobacco fields. The Spanish–American War only lasted one hundred and thirteen days. Even though the Spanish American war was a short war, it had many of very useful world–changing outcomes. The conflict began when the Cubans wanted independence from Spain. Spain would not give Cubans their independence. Roosevelt, Jefferson, Washington, And Fdr Essay When presenting the question of who deserves the title of best President of the United States, one would not be surprised to find Lincoln, Jefferson, Washington, and FDR as the frontrunners. While each of these presidents was undisputedly successful and groundbreaking in their own right, all fall short to America's first modern president– Theodore Roosevelt. Roosevelt, assuming office at the turn of the century, redefined and reimagined the role of the president and the executive officialdom. By expanding the powers of the presidency, Roosevelt was able to move the country forward in both the international arena and on the home front. Roosevelt's vast success can greatly be attributed to his charisma, character, and persuasion skills. Adam Smith And Karl Marx In his book Born in Blood & Fire, John Chasteen defines Progress as any transformation that made Latin America similar to European and US models, resulting in human improvement. These transformations included the application of advanced technology, new political aspects, and economic growth. Neocolonialism was born from Progress, which can be explained as the influence foreign countries had on Latin America's colonization. There was, however, different views on which way Progress should be achieved Latin America. Adam Smith and Karl Marx are examples of the main two views. Adam Smith, a Scottish Philosopher, was a critique of controlled markets and supported the idea that consumers should be able to engage in a free market in order to achieve overall self– profit. As a believer in capitalism, Smith also viewed private property and overall self– interest as positives. Implementing these ideas without the interference of the government, Smith believed, led to unlimited wealth and the most desirable economic outcome. Karl Marx, on the contrary, believed that poor people suffered for the benefit of the higher social class. Growing up I was very ignorant about Puerto Rico. It wasn't till I was in the Navy and got stationed in Puerto Rico did I really find out the small Caribbean island. Although Puerto Rico has an extensive history, I will only give a brief synopsis of it: In November 1493 Christopher Columbus discovered the island of Puerto Rico for the country of Spain. It remained a colonization of Spain until 1898 when Spain ceded the island to the United States after the Spanish– American war. However, the American citizens of Puerto Rico are still very far from attaining the same level of economic prosperity other American citizens enjoy in the other 50 states. Becoming a state would give Puerto Rico the opportunity of improving its economic situation." Politically, there are several advantages to becoming a state. The first is that Puerto Rico will have a voice in the Congress with at least seven represenatives and two senators. Currently, Puerto Rico only has a resident commissioner in Congress. He has a voice, but no vote. Puerto Rico has no electoral votes in the Presidential elections. Becoming a State would remove Puerto Rico form under the Territorial "claws" of the U.S. Constitution, and would put Puerto Rico on the same political footing as the other 50 states. This is the single most compelling argument for Puerto Rican statehood that Puerto Ricans have. CONS OF STATEHOOD There are several economic reasons that can be argued against Puerto Rico becoming a state. First, the current unemployment rate is 11.7%, which would rank the highest in the nation. Puerto Rico has the lowest per capita income at around $7000, half of the poorest U.S. state (Mississippi). Thus it would cost the U.S. Government approximately 3–4 billion a year for 10 years to get Puerto Rico up to par with the other states. The dawn of American imperialism was a time of expansion and also a time of war and racism. During this time America was increasing "its power by gaining control over other areas of the world" (Merriam– Webster). America was fighting a war in the Philippines to take control because Americans thought Filipinos' could not govern themselves and were uneducated. Also America was trying to annex Hawaii even though the majority of Hawaiians were against the annexation. During this time people and companies such as Josiah strong, Rudard Kipling and Pearl's soap were spreading racism and the belief that Anglo–Saxons were a superior race and should "impress its institutions upon man– kind" (Josiah Strong, "Our Country"). There were many primary sources that I consulted while studying my topic. To compare the similarities and differences between California and Puerto Rico you would have to fully understand how they both work. How they were made, what the laws are, and how exactly the government functions. Many people know that Puerto Rico is a U.S Territory, although many people do not exactly know what that means. A territory is defined as an area of land under the jurisdiction of a ruler or state. The ruler for this specific territory is whomever the president of the United States is at the time. These territories are not single states and do not fall under the same jurisdiction as the states do. They have their own government that U.S. helps them run. Puerto Rico is about 29 times smaller than California. One state housing more than 39 million people is so much larger than a single territory. California is broken up into 482 cities. Four new cities have been formed since 2004. The largest city in California being Los Angeles currently has a population of 4 million people making it the second largest city in the United States. Puerto Rico coming in with only seventy–eight cities has a small total population of 4 million people. The largest city being San Jose with a population of 389,714 people. Even though they have some similarities, the two groups have many differences as well. Some similarities include how they bargain and negotiate. However, they differ in the type of union, what they stand for, how large they are, why and when they started, and what they negotiate for. Unions were finally able to form in the Unites States because the National Labor Relations Act of 1935 passed, which "required employers to bargain with unions that represented the majority of their employees" (Ehrenberg & Smith, pg. 453). Because of the National Labor Relations Act, unions could legally form and be recognized by employers. The United Automobiles Workers (UAW) began in May of 1935 in Detroit, Michigan. Initially, 200 delegates from different automobile companies met in Detroit to establish the UAW, and its power over negotiating strengthen just a few years after forming. The UAW created a union for auto plant workers, which made them an industrial union. The UAW represents different types of workplaces from multinational corporations, small ... The Gilded Age will be remembered for the accomplishments of thousands of American thinkers, inventors, entrepreneurs, writers, and promoters of social justice. The Gilded Age and the first years of the twentieth century were a time of great social change and economic growth in the United States. Roughly spanning the years between Reconstruction and the dawn of the new century, the Gilded Age saw rapid industrialization, urbanization, the construction of great transcontinental railroads, innovations in science and technology, and the rise of big business. Afterward, the first years of the new century that followed were dominated by progressivism, a forward–looking political movement that attempted to redress some of the ills that had ... Mechanization and marketing were the keys to success in this age: companies that could mass– produce products and convince people to buy them accumulated enormous amounts of wealth, while companies that could not were forced out of business by brutal competition. Railroads were the linchpin in the new industrialized economy. The railroad industry enabled raw materials, finished products, food, and people to travel cross–country in a matter of days, as opposed to the months or years that it took just prior to the Civil War. By the end of the war, the United States boasted some 35,000 miles of track, mostly in the industrialized North. By the turn of the century, that number had jumped to almost 200,000 miles, linking the North, South, and West. With these railroads making travel easier, millions of rural Americans flocked to the cities, and by 1900, nearly 40 percent of the population lived in urban areas. By the twentieth century, the rise of big business and the large migration of Americans from the countryside to the cities caused a shift in political awareness, as elected officials saw the need to address the growing economic and social problems that developed along with the urban boom. Progressives believed that the government needed to take a strong, proactive role in the economy, regulating big business, immigration, and urban ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Judicial Overhaul If the opportunity to implement a new judicial body were to arise, there would be a great deal of components required to formulate a new judicial body. Drawing from different states in America, a conglomerate of components would be called into service to draft this new body. The states in question that will be used in this reformat will be the states of, Florida, Texas, and Illinois. These states contain a simplified and durable judicial hierarchy. The food in Cuba is really also really healthy. The foods are a blend of Native American Taino food, Spanish, African, and Caribbean cuisines. This results in a unique, interesting and flavorful blend of the several different cultural influences, with strong similarities with the cuisine of the neighboring Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. [edit] French colonization See also: New France and Fort Caroline New France was the area colonized by France in North America during a period extending from the exploration of the Saint Lawrence River, by Jacques Cartier in 1534, to the cession of New France to Spain and Britain in 1763. At its peak in 1712 (before the Treaty of Utrecht), the territory of New France extended from Newfoundland to the Rocky Mountains and from Hudson Bay to the Gulf of Mexico. The territory was divided in five colonies, each with its own administration: Canada, Acadia, Hudson Bay, Newfoundland and Louisiana. Also during this period, French Huguenots, sailing under Jean Ribault, attempted to found a colony in what became the southeastern coast of the United States. Arriving in 1562, they established the ephemeral colony of Charlesfort on Parris Island in what is now South Carolina. When this failed, most of the colonists followed René Goulaine de Laudonnière and moved south, founding the colony of Fort Caroline at the mouth of the St. Johns River in what is now Jacksonville, Florida on June 22, 1564. Fort Caroline was destroyed in 1565 by the Spanish under Pedro Menéndez de Avilés, who moved in from St. Augustine, founded to the south earlier in the year. • 72. Theodore Roosevelt And The Progressive Era Upon the arrival of the Progressive Era, America shared several common characteristics of the industrialized countries: drastically increased population, overcrowded cities, poor working conditions, and significant economic disparity. Three presidents – Theodore Roosevelt, William Taft, and Woodrow Wilson – during the Progressive Era made essential domestic reforms and launched new foreign policies in order to construct America into a more prosperous country and a leading power around the globe. A driving force in the Progressive Era, Theodore Roosevelt believed that the government had the right to regulate big business and that the government should use its resources to help achieve economic and social justice. In his first term, he launched the Square Deal, which focused on the control of corporations, the consumer protection, and the conservation of natural resources. In order to achieve his goal of controlling the large corporations and railroad companies, Congress, under Roosevelt's urge, created the Department of Commerce and Labor to monitor corporations, help dissolve monopolies, and promote fair competition between companies. At the same year, Roosevelt initialized the Elkins Act of 1903 to end the practice of railroad granting shipping rebates to certain companies, and three years later, Theodore's administration issued the Hepburn Act, which gave the Interstate Commerce Commission the power to regulate shipping rates on railroads. With the frontier to conquer and virtually unlimited resources, they had little reason to look elsewhere. Americans generally had a high level of disdain for Europe, although wealthy Americans were often educated there and respected European cultural achievements in art, music and literature. Americans also felt secure from external threat because of their geographic isolation between two oceans, which gave them a sense of invulnerability. Until very late in the 19th century Americans remained essentially indifferent to foreign policy and world affairs. What interests America did have overseas were generally focused in the ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... America had always been driven by the idea of "manifest destiny," which was at first the idea that the U.S. was to expand over the whole continent of North America, "from the Isthmus of Panama to the Arctic Circle." While Canada and Mexico seemed impervious to further expansion by Americans, at least there had been the rest of the mainland to fill up. With the ending of the frontier and the completion of the settlement of the West the impulse to further expansion spilled out over America's borders. Shortly after the end of the Civil War the U.S. purchased Alaska and began to develop commercial interests in the Caribbean and the Pacific in places like Cuba, Hawaii, Midway, Samoa, the Virgin Islands and the Dominican Republic. A great part of the impetus for expansion came from a rather unlikely source, naval officer Captain Alfred Thayer Mahan. Founder of the Naval War College in Newport, Rhode Island, Captain Mahan began to write widely read and applauded books and articles that called for America to develop its strength on the basis of sea power, which he found to have been a decisive force throughout history in making nations and empires great and long lasting. Mahan wrote a number of books based on the theme of the "Influence of Sea Power Upon History." Mahan's basic idea was that to remain great and strong in an ever more competitive world, America needed a powerful maritime force, both naval and commercial, and an overseas infrastructure ... He did not have the power to intervene so instead he summoned for representatives on both sides to meet and come to an agreement. He, too, attended that meeting even though he was injured and in a wheelchair from a prior traffic accident. "This meeting marked the turn of the U.S. Government from strikebreaker to peacemaker in industrial disputes" (Grossman, 2015). According to studies by the New Progressive Party "the island should attain a (economic) growth rate of 2.2 to 3.5% faster" through statehood (Regis). Economic growth will affect population directly because their standard of living will rise due to an average increase of income. Even though population will now be subject to income taxes, Resident Commissioner Pedro Pierluisi assures that increased property values and economic growth will "offset any kind of impact that federal income taxes could have," ("Puerto Rico Could Change Congress If Made A State").
