Black Equality Movement And Law Enforcement
Thirty–five35 years ago, Philadelphia police dropped a bomb on a row house on 62nd and Osage
Avenue in West Philadelphia. The bomb was dropped in an attempt to remove MOVE members
from the house. The MOVE movement was black liberation group original created by John Africa in
1972. MOVE had had a difficult relationship with the Chicago police since its inception, and a
particular tragic encounter with the police 7 years before the bombing – ; a standoff between the
members and the police resulted in the death of one police officer and life sentences for 9 MOVE
members (whom are know as the MOVE 9).
However, tension between black equality movements and law enforcement had been high for the
previous decade. The 1960's was a turbulent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
On the morning after the shooting, the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) went to the school
nearby the scene. They demanded a civilian review board to discipline the police, but they were
greeted by fifty officers holding nightsticks. Two hundred protesters , primarily whites and Puerto
Ricans, were occupying the area in front of the school by noon. The next day 250 people attended
James Powell's funeral under surveillance of policemen. In another part of town, people were
putting on a rally discussing the rising crime rate in Hharlem. The funeral ended without any
problems but later on the rally took a turn for the worst. The crowds made their way to the rooftops
and began throwing bricks and bottles. The police rushed to secure the buildings arresting rioters
and CORE members. Over 1,000 people assembled at the intersection of 7th Avenue and 125th
street. The police began to break the crowd down into mobs which ran in different directions. One
group made their way to the Theresa Hotel and a Molotov cocktail was thrown at a police car
injuring an officer. The police, authorized to use firearms, proceeded to fire in the air to hold off
rioters on the rooftops. One man was found dead after being shot by one of the officers random
rounds. On the fourth day, July 19–20th, 75 volunteers created an "outpost" on 125th Street and 8th
Avenue to develop aid for teenagers and women in the closing riot. The group began arguing with

The 1960's Essay
The 1960's The 1960's was a decade that forever changed the culture and society of America. The
1960's were widely known as the decade of peace and love when in reality, minorities were
struggling to gain freedom from segregation. The war to gain freedom for all minorites was a great
obstacle to overcome. On February 20, 1960 four black college freshmen from the Negro
Agricultural and Technical College in Greensboro, North Carolina quietly walked into a restaurant
and sat down at the lunch counter. They were protesting the Jim Crow custom that blacks could be
served while standing up but not while they were sitting at the lunch counter. The students quietly
sat there politely asking for service until closing time. The next ... Show more content on

He started a militant, all black group called the Black Panthers. On a bright Sunday in a ballroom in
Manhattan in full view of 400 blacks Malcolm was murdered. Three men casually walked down the
aisle; and from eight feet opened fire with sawed–off double barreled shotguns. Malcolm was killed
by a pair of point blank range shots to the chest. On March 12, 1965, U.S. Highway 80 was blocked
by sixty state troopers who stood in a wall three deep 400 yards past the Edmund Pettus Bridge,
which crosses the Alabama river. When black marchers came within 100 yards the troopers were
ordered to put on their gas masks. At twenty five yards the marchers stopped. Seconds later the
command "troopers forward" was barked. The troopers moved in a solid wall pushing back the front
marchers. At 75 yards the troopers were joined by posse men and deputies with tear gas canisters, in
seconds the road was swirling with clouds of smoke. The mounted men brought out bull whips and
began beating the marchers. Never in history had the American public responded with such fury.
Over 15,000 thousand people marched in five different cities across the country. On Sunday, March
21, 1965 a crowd of 3,400 marchers lead by two Nobel Peace Prize winners, Rev. Martin Luther
King Jr. and Ralph Bunche, departed from Selma on their four day march to Montgomery. They
were accompanied by 2,900 military police,

The Cause Of Human Nature : The Culprit That Causes...
The Culprit that Causes Malformed Human Nature
Variety is the spice of life, people play different roles to make such massive and splendid society.
However, people do not always do things perfectly in order to fit in the society. In other words,
unless wrong decision can be fixed as soon as possible, or it causes serious problems such as the
Watts Riots in 1965. It is one of the most influential rebellions in California. Before the 1900s,
California was primarily a city ran by whites and times were tough, apparently, the Law
enforcement was every bit as rough. Since the early 20th century, the black population of the city
doubled, yet blacks weren't the only ones moving to LA. Latinos and Negroes all were moving there
in hopes of finding work. With politicians doing what politicians do, blacks and other races than
White were looked down on. White people, or landowners in general, were not allowing other races
to move into certain areas of the city (Behrens, 2011). Due to the inequality of rights, a segment of
society begins forms its gap. With the years of embitterment of economic, political isolation and an
exposure to the Marquette Frye incident, a sudden voice of anger soon began, spurred on by
residents who lived in an area near Compton. The riots lasted six days, was reported 34 dead, 1,032
injured, approximately 4,000 arrested, and $40 million worth of property destroyed (Source#4).

An Artistic Representation of the Sixties Through Across The Universe
Many historical fiction films that we watch fail to depict history in an accurate way due to the
emphasis on entertainment and revenue instead of keeping the integrity of its historical events.
However, some motion pictures stay true to history while providing entertainment through fictional
stories. Although the stories are fictional, movie writers can craft stories that represent the history,
attitudes, and personalities of a time period in a historically accurate way. A prime example of a
movie that is entertaining and represents history accurately is Across The Universe, directed by Julie
Taymor in 2007. This film succeeds in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
For example, Prudence arrives through the bathroom window of Sadie's apartment, which is an
allusion to the song "She Came Through The Bathroom Window", and Prudence's character is a
direct reflection of the song "Dear Prudence". Characters names are off of song titles like "Hey
Jude", "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds", and "Maxwels Silver Spoon". These are prime examples
how the Beatles music influenced the portrayal of Taymor's characters, but also how the characters
represent real people. Not only does the music represent the characters, but also Taymor integrates
the songs into real historical events. For example, Jojo travels to New York from Detroit after his
little brother was killed in Detroit's 12th Street Riot. The 12th Street Riot was one of the worst riots
in American history; the governor sent the Michigan National Guard into Detroit, and President
Johnson sent the U.S Army to subdue the riot. The end result was forty–three dead, 467 injured,
over 7,200 arrests and more than 2,000 buildings burned down. The scale of the riot eclipsed the
1992 riots in Los Angeles. Through the portrayal of the riot the black community of the 12th street
district sing "Let It Be". I must note that in analyzing music each song has different meanings
interpretations to each person. However after analyzing "Let It Be", I have found the phrase "let it
be" is about giving up your personal power to a higher power, which is what the people in the riots

The Watts Riots Essay
Imagine being born in a place where people don't mix with one another and keep to their own kind.
Imagine not being able to walk into a store because it is white owned. How would it feel if you were
black, lived in a city that was run by a white government, where poverty, unemployment and lack of
education were all problems of everyday life? If everyone were treated equally, then it would not be
a problem. But for inner city African Americans that isn't the case. As humans, there is only so much
we can take when it comes to segregation before we act out. There is only so much hate a person can
take before letting it be known, once a person is pushed over that threshold there is no holding back.

The scuffle attracted
a small crowd of angry onlookers, which included Frye's mother and brother.
They were also arrested. (Auerbach 1688) That's all it took for this riot to come into play, a few
people unhappy about the way the police handled the situation. The next thing you know its a few
thousand unhappy people.
In the Watts community, at that time, there were five hundred and forty thousand African Americans.
Many of them had immigrated from the south in search of better work opportunities, as well as
freedom from injustice and inequalities (Auerbach 1687).
Once the police arrested Marquette Frye, angry Watts's residents began stoning passing cars and
setting them on fire (Bradley 895).Two days later, on the morning of August 13th, massive amounts
of people marched into the business district and started a free–for–all on the local stores. Firebombs
and attacks against white owned businesses followed. Then they started dragging people from their
cars and beating them. Watts had a storehouse of combustible materials located on the southeast side
of Los Angeles. A minor clash between police and black residents resulted in an explosion that
ripped through Watts (Magill 1924).
The Chief of Police, William Parker, went to the Mayor, Sam Yorty, and asked him to call in the
National Guard. Yorty refused the request and the riots went on. On the third the Governor of
California, Pat Brown,

Essay on If We Must Die by Claude McKay
If We Must Die by Claude McKay Clearly provocative and even chilling, "If We Must Die" by
Claude McKay stirs deep and powerful emotions in any who reads it. A poem inspired by violent
race riots, it serves as a motivating anthem representative of an entire culture. Graphic and full of
vengeance this poem is demanding action, not telling a story. McKay utilizes imagery to its fullest
extent creating an end result which any man or woman, black or white, who has ever felt the hard
and hateful hand of oppression can relate to. Written in the form of a Shakespearean sonnet, one
could hardly mistake it for anything so pleasant. Sonnets being traditionally used for beautiful,
appealing topics, already there is contradiction between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Dogs rarely die a shameful death, but instead fight to the finish. Using this dichotomy he further
illustrates the severance of and between the hunter and the hunted. McKay emphasizes within the
first three lines that the conflict at hand is not merely a struggle then, but a fierce hunt in which there
is no mercy and only one survivor. Again in the fifth line he requests that "If we must die, O let us
nobly die,/ So that our precious blood may not be shed/ In vain" (5–7). He reasons that if there is to
be bloodshed regardless, then the blood ought not to be shed without a fight. They should not lose
their "precious blood" without any significance or effect, and not in an irreverent manner. If they
succeed in avoidance of such vain, then McKay claims that "even the monsters we defy/ Shall be
constrained to honor us through dead!" (7–8) McKay knows that upon a proud death, even those
they fought will be compelled to acknowledge their bravery and pride. By referring to the enemy as
"monsters," McKay makes it increasingly difficult to not follow him. There is no pity or
compromising with monsters and every man, woman, and child has his or her own image of a
monster. Given this open description they are then free to envision the monster as they see and feel
it. They can construct it based on their own fears. In line nine McKay recognizes the root of their
problem as lack of unity. He is aware of the constant struggles

Importance Of Energy Efficiency Essay
Energy Efficiency
Humans today are using much more electricity than we need to in our houses and this is impacting
our world more then we realise. Although electricity is a huge advantage to humans it has the
complete opposite effects on our environment. By using more electricity, we are using more of the
earth's resources and if we keep going down this road then we are going to run out. The solution for
this mass overuse of energy is to build houses which are more energy efficient. Features like LED
lightbulbs, insulating and even positioning your house in the correct position for natural airflow
instead of using air conditioning are all ways we can help improve this problem.
What does energy efficiency mean?
"Energy efficiency means using less energy to provide the same service." An example of this is
where a LED lightbulb uses less electrical energy than a traditional incandescent lightbulb to
produce the same amount of light. The phrase 'energy efficiency' can also be described as any kind
of energy–saving measure. (1)
How is electricity made?
In 1831, scientist Michael Farday discovered the first form of electricity. He found that when a
magnet moved inside a copper coil it created what is known as an electric current. This invention is
known as a turbine generator. Even today, in full sized power stations this simple invention is still
used and works very effectively. These power stations create mass amounts of energy to turn the
turbines. Most of the time the energy is made from the heat, for example when coal is burned. More
environmentally friendly power stations use wind or flowing water to turn these turbines. This is
known as renewable energy because it will not run out, unlike when oil and coal are used.(3)
How does the use of electricity impact our world?
Environmental Affects
Although humans use electricity for almost everything we do, we don't realise that this is harming
our environment in many ways. The production of electricity is causing a major loss of the earth's
natural resources such as:
– Loss of coal and natural gases
– Deforestation for mining (loss of trees)
– Loss of habitat for rare and threatened species
Another environmental issue resulting from the production of electricity

That was not enough for some officers they believed King was resisting arrest. Due to their belief
some cops shot Rodney with a taser gun. Shortly several officers started to fiercely beat King with
their batons. "We won that game didn't we," says officer Laurence Powell to his mates. George
Holliday, a men standing near the scene, video tapped the action. Rapidly this video was
broadcasted not only across America but around the world. It would not be ignored by its viewers.
Everyone who tuned in and watched was shocked. Justice was expected to be made towards the
heartless cops who savagely bet Rodney King.
When the judge, Bernard Kamins, who was Caucasian declared three of the four (also white)
officers not guilty the public saw his decision very racist. The riots began in the evening after the
judgment, and grew over the next two days, but they would continue for several days. Angry Los
Angels residents went out to the streets to show their fury. "These people are angry and they have
every right to be!" said a man to the news cameras during the destruction. Authorities failed
miserably to control the people. As time went by the madness did not decrease but enlarged.
The second day (Thursday, April 30, 1992) of rioting, the storekeepers did not stay put, but fought
back to protect their shops. News channels televised store owners fighting back with arms and other

Race, Religion, Gender, And Sexual Orientation
In all parts of the world people have been speaking their minds since the beginning of time in every
single race/ethnicity. People have been rioting for the right for equality for as long as time. If it was
not one race it was another. In the 1960's riots had sprung in Los Angeles, Cleveland, San Francisco,
Chicago, Newark, and Detroit. All for the same reason that people are beginning to riot about in
today's world for Equality no matter what race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. After World
War II, many African–Americans moved to the west of the United States mainly in Los Angeles, in
hopes of finding a place where they were free to be themselves and live a life of freedom without
slavery and discrimination. Isn't that what every person wants to be able to go to school and work
without being afraid of the environment around them. How could a person feel comfortable raising a
family in a place where they themselves are afraid to even walk out their front door. The African–
Americans felt this exact same way and were tired of feeling that way. On August 11th of 1965 the
Los Angeles Highway patrol stopped two African Americans who were supposedly drinking and
driving. Could you imagine being afraid for your life when you are stopped by the very people
whose one job is to protect you. On this night Watts resident Marquette Frye and his brother were
pulled over only minutes from their house. Terrified their mother came out to claim the vehicle and

The New Mexico penitentiary in south Santa Fe, New Mexico was no stranger to violence. This
penitentiary has seen two riots in its past one July 19,
1922 and the other June 15, 1953, these however were nothing in comparison to the events to come.
In the early morning hours of February 2, 1980 two prisoners began what would be recorded as one
of the most violent prison riots in the history of the American correctional system. 33 prisoners died,
over 200 inmates were injured and 12 correction officers were taken hostage of those 12, seven were

The Governor, Bruce King was well aware of the conditions and issues of the prison and warnings
of a prison riot went disregarded. Prisoners began by taking control of south–side Dormitory E–2;
within minutes the prisoners had taken four more officers in the dorm hostage, a fleeing officer left
keys behind which gave the inmates complete access to the main control center, inmate cells, doors
and weapons. By midafternoon violent offenders from solitary confinement had been released and
the violence had gotten out of control. The prisoners had a particular area they could not access, the
protective custody area, this area held the mentally ill and vulnerable inmates it included those
inmates convicted of sex crimes and yes, those labeled snitches. Armed with blowtorches left by a
construction crew, the inmates cut through the bars of the cells and in the early morning of February
3 began so did the brutal slaughter several inmates. Negotiations between inmates and authorities
stalled but, eventually the inmates come up with 11 demands which included basic prison conditions
like overcrowding, inmate discipline, educational services and improving food. The prisoners also
demanded to talk to independent federal officials and members of the news media. In exchange they

Comparative Analysis Of A Farmer's Market
For the assignment of comparative analysis of a farmer 's market and a grocery store in a low
income community, it was a no–brainer where I would go. I didn 't need to go online and find a list
of farmer 's markets in LA and narrow it down by the low income zip code, not when I lived in one.
As a resident of a low income neighborhood, I knew exactly where to go: I would go to the Watt 's
Healthy Farmer 's Market. Held every Saturday, whether it rains or shines, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.,
the Watt 's Healthy Farmer Market is located in the Ted Watkins Memorial Park, appropriately
named after Ted Watkins, the founder of the Watts Labor Community Action Committee (WLCAC).
WLCAC is an influencing non–profit community based organization which serves to provide
affordable housing, jobs, and social services to the residents of Watts and South Los Angeles, as
well as fight poverty and ultimately, increasing the quality of life of the neighborhood. It was
organized following the 1965 Watts riots with the support of several labor unions and funded by
grants from the government at varies levels. The park was named in 1995 and is a 28–acre facility
taking up one whole block with the farmer 's market taking place in the southwest corner,
conveniently located just a few steps away from one of the park 's parking lots.
Surrounding the park, are a few interesting things I 'd like to point out. There are quite a bit of
stores, both big and small, as well as several residential homes. West of

Around 3:00 pm on Sunday April 11, 1993 a riot started when prisoners returning from recreation
time attacked prison guards in cell block L. The guards held the keys to the entire cell block and it
did not take long for the prisoners to take full advantage of the keys. Four beaten guards were
released within hours of the attack but 8 were retained. The riot was started for many reasons but the
most obvious reason was TB testing on Muslims, they do not believe in using needles to take blood
or for injections. Soon after the take over of the cell block Warren Tate shut off the power and water
in the cell block. A "Death Squad" was formed in the beginning hours of the riot and black prisoners

A lot of what the public thinks about the riot is most likely false information. One reporter said that
172 inmate bodies were piled up inside the prison, when only 11 died.
The reporters did not help the negotiations at all. Inmates with battery powered TV's were able to
see sharpshooters position themselves on the roofs. Some negotiators believe the riot could have
ended hours after it had started when prisoners tried to negotiate using bullhorns but could not
because of helicopters hovering so low. The media wasn't always a bad thing though one reporter
was able to exchange a hostage to allow an inmate some air time.
When the riot started the guards went into small rooms called safe wells. The rooms were made out
of 2 layers of block and had steel reinforced doors. The doors did their job but the prisoners started
to beat at the block walls with weight lifting bars. Soon they busted a hole into the room and
dragged the guards through the walls. The guards were assigned men to watch them; these men were
ordered to kill the guards if the prison came under attack. A few of the guards were protected very
well because they affiliated with the Aryan Brotherhood. These few lucky guards were even given
weapons to defend themselves incase of a race riot within the prison.

The Watts Riots The Watts Riots erupted on the backdrop of simmering racial tensions in the United
States. There were many varied long term causes for the eruption of the riot that rocked Watts and
the surrounding areas, but the immediate cause of the riot was routine police work – police
responding to a call of a concerned citizen worried about a man driving his car erratically.
The Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, was predominantly black and racial tension had reached a
breaking point when two white policemen stopped, Marquette Frye, a black motorist whom they

foreshadowed the many rebellions to occur in the years that followed in Detroit, Newark, and other
American cities (History.com). In the aftermath of the riot there were three major outcomes. One,
the McCone Commission was set up by the government to study the riots. The McCone
Commission found that people rioted because of unemployment, bad schools and education, and
prior instances of police brutality (www.southcentralhistory.com). A second outcome following was
an independent commission, chaired by former Illinois Gov. Otto Kerner, that investigated the
causes of the rioting. The Kerner Commission issued its landmark report in 1968, concluding: "Our
nation is moving toward two societies, one black, one white –– separate and unequal"
(www.cnn.com). Another major outcome was the creation of SWAT teams. They were created with
the vision of three police officers: Officer Nelson, who originally came up with the concept of a
specially equipped and highly trained unit, Inspector Gates, who spear headed the push to make it
happen and Ed Davis had the foresight to approve the program. The term SWAT was coined by

Protest Movements In The Civil Rights Movement
The social dynamic of the United States is more unique and diverse than ever before. With a
population compiled of various groups of people in categorization of race, religion, economic class,
and so on, there are bound to be multiple stances and opinions on political policy, social actions,
law, and past experiences. With this idea of different opinions, which everyone is entitled to, there
are disagreements, and in some cases, there can be protesting. From the civil rights movement,
abortion, and social justice, different groups of people are separated or divided when it comes to
issues like these, but what happens when people try to take advantage of a protest and turn violent?
In the past few years, it seems that large protest movements become more and more chaotic, violent,
and out of control, reckless violence outweighing good intentioned peaceful protests. Not to say that
protesting has changed in the sense of purpose, it has always been in part to display some form of
unhappiness. Instead, rather it is that the movements today are different, and such movement's
narratives can be taken advantage of. Of course, protesting has been around for a long time. the
point can even be made that our own country was founded through forms of protesting. A citizen
exercising their right to protest is protected by the constitution, there is no denying that. However, in
recent years, the subject of protests appears to have shifted to primarily tackling social issues,
subjects that cannot necessarily be solved by the passing of a law.
We see examples of protesting social issues particularly when it comes to cases of police brutality,
and the black lives matter movement. Taking on the believed systematic oppressions, this cause has
the goal of pushing forth a social movement that can end social injustices. Issues taken on by some
movements today cannot be solved by legislation as easily as certain problems throughout our
countries history. Social issues are embedded deeply into our society, and that is where the
difference is between now and before.
Additionally, while these movements are happening, they are also being taken advantage of. A
public march protesting something can turn ugly fast by minority of the group.

Dear Journal, I was an African American storeowner during the Watts Riots in LA in the 1960s. I

so many people because they were a part of a state that did not care to fix the issues that their urban
cities were facing every day. Countless of individuals were filled with so much anger and loss of
hope for a better future. In the 1960s, Los Angeles had very few neighborhoods that African
Americans were "allowed" to live in. Watts progressively became a neighborhood of black poverty

There were all kinds of city leaders at the meeting from members of LA Police Department,

oppressed people looting every business in sight, walking away with things that they have wanted

Analysis Of In Feed By Walker Percy
Walker Percy, an author and philosopher, said that, "You live in a deranged age, more deranged that
usual, because in spite of great scientific and technological advances, man has not the faintest idea
of who he is or what he is doing." In Feed, a satirical novel by M.T. Anderson, the characters often
seem as if they don't have an understanding of what is happening in the world around them. Feed is
mainly about Titus, the narrator who displays more complexity than his friends, and Violet, his
individualistic girlfriend who is constantly challenging concepts in their world. In addition to Titus
and Violet, M.T. Anderson includes many significant secondary figures, one of which is named
Quendy. Quendy is more mainstream, meaning that she follows the current trends and is very
dependent on the feed, and is more of an average teenager in their society. Quendy, a static
character, is used to satirize the idea of trends throughout the novel and to show that because of this,
people don't seem to have their own opinions.
M.T. Anderson uses Quendy to illuminate how trends work in their society. Throughout the book,
Quendy is seen trying to keep up with the current styles, which constantly involves checking to

The Sampling Interval For The Current Clamps
The sampling interval for the current clamps can be changed depending on what we want to know.
For the air compressor we may log more frequently, for example every five seconds, if we find that
the compressor is switching mode very frequently, otherwise logging at 60–second intervals may be
enough. The purpose of the continuous measurement will also affect the logging interval. If the first
visit gives us the impression that the compressed air system is an important part of the energy use,
we may measure more carefully to have enough information to suggest detailed measures. The
drawing of the electric
(Table 3. Example of plan for energy measurements to allocate electricity use to unit processes.)
In this case we will have a measurement from a switchgear cabinet that covers several unit
processes, for example lighting and forklift charging for a garage and picking stock, as shown in
Figure 8. The data from clamp no. 1 in the switchgear must be complemented by simulta‐ neous
measurements from clamps 2 and 3 in the distribution board, where clamp 2 measures the total
incoming current to the Central Garage board and clamp 3 measures the outgoing current to the
forklift chargers. Later, the data from clamp 2 in the Central Garage distribution board can be
subtracted from clamp 1 in the switchgear to get a picture of the energy use in Central Picking Stock
and Central Large Hall. At the same time you have parallel measurements of the air compressor
from clamp no 4. The clamp

Rioting Research Paper
While my wife and I were watching the rioting going on in Baltimore Maryland, we asked each
other why it has come to this. Having a good friend who lives there and was very close to the riots it
was troubling to see this so close to someone that we know. When we discussed this with her
together on Facebook that night I learned that there was a lot of great things going on within their
community right before the rioting started. There were church members and community leaders
going door to door in the neighborhoods inviting everyone to different churches so they can
peacefully approach the issues in their city. The news channels that was covering these events
unfold: CNN, FOXNEWS and NBC News all were showing the negative outcomes and the rioting.

But it is not unusual for certain outlets to have a specific person favored in their time on air over
their opponents. And this once again can detour the publics opinion if they see one candidate more
than they do another. After a major weather incident happens we do see the good come out of
ordinary people on the news. The news after Hurricane Katrina started off with acts of courage by
the Coast Guard, rescuing roughly 34,000 people. We saw stories of ordinary citizens helping their
neighbors and even strangers with shelter, food and water. It did not take long for the media to find
the stories that would make us ask how, and why is this happening. The people that were stranded in

could not get out of the city quick enough. They had little supplies, and when the news learned that
they were stuck there without a legit plan by the city, state or federal government to get them out, or
supply others with the help they needed. It took days for FEMA to set up operations in New Orleans,

Who Decided To Make A Riot Analysis
Assignment 4 Who decided to make a riot one day? Why did they think violence should be the
answer? When it comes down to the people getting our voice heard, brutality should not have been a
thought that came to mind. Riots are irrelevant because of how innocent people are victimized when
they aren't the ones causing the unfair treatment in our society. I wonder why individuals go against
their own people when it's the ones who are in charge of decision making who we should be angry
with. I think that's exactly what the government wants us to do, go against each other so they could
throw us in prison and make billions of dollars off of us. If the people knew what they were doing to
themselves I guarantee they would put an end to it. It seems

A revolutionary threshold is the notion of when an individual is willing to participate (if at all)
within a protest based on the amount of people already involved. An individual's revolutionary
threshold may decrease or increase based on a variety of reasons. Clark, Golder, and Golder
explained, "As you might expect, people's thresholds are likely to depend on many different factors,
such as whether they have benefitted or suffered under the regime, whether they have much to lose
from participating in protests, and whether they believe that the regime is fragile or stable" (Clark,

Carbon footprint essentially measures the total carbon emission produced by a company
contributing to climate change (Swallow, 2009). After the trucking incident in Indonesia, E227
Global Solutions is determined to reduce its carbon footprint by 25% next year. By doing so, E227
Global Solutions will improve its public image while simultaneously protecting the environment.
While efforts of "going green" can be seen with E227 Global Solutions' local initiatives, it is crucial
to do so within the company. Currently the company does not have a structured green initiatives for
the internal work environment. Statement of Purpose The main purpose of the proposal is to
persuade the executives of E227 Global Solutions to adopt an overall eco–friendly internal
operations mainly replacing all current equipment with energy efficient ones (e.g. LED lightings).

Detroit Riots Essay
The Detroit riots occurred in the summer of 1967. The riot initially started because of race when
poor African Americans got kicked out of their houses. They started living on 12th street in Detroit.
The riot started there because African Americans were fed up with the way that they were being
treated. Many years prior to the riot there were already racial issues. The government made it hard
for African Americans to buy houses in the 1950s. During that time, white people were resisting
African Americans from moving into Detroit. They were gathering outside of houses owned by
African Americans until they would leave. According to Stanford, "I was blissfully unaware of the
pervasive racism and resentment that was simmering in my city" (28). ... Show more content on

This was showing even more racial issues even in the law enforcement which is supposed to protect
everyone no just people of their nationality. Riots were happening for the same issues in Cleveland,
Chicago, Omaha, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Since all these riots were occurring far away
from Detroit many Detroiters thought that their city would spare the riots. Sadly, they were wrong.
In July 23, 1967, the Detroit Police department busted a bar with a prominent number of African
Americans. They arrested every person in the bar. More and more people started to gather on 12th
street to watch the proceedings. That is when the rioting started. The crowd began to get more
violent as more people joined.
During the riot, the first fire started at a shoe store on 12th. Officers were starting to line up with
shields standing next to each other to block the rioting from spreading any further. There were
authorities having a meeting to try and stop the riot. They were trying to make peace patrols but the
police officers were blocking them from entering the area of the riot. The police officers were still
trying to take control of the situation but their officers were being injured and the rioters started to
outnumber them by a lot. As the police officers were giving up the firefighters were putting out fires.
There were new fires starting as fast as they were being put out.

Stratification In Southland
S–Land While today Los Angeles is prided on being one of the most diverse cities in the United
States, there was (and still is) a tremendous amount of resistance that had to be overcome. Society's
inclination to maintain homogeneity along with the testing of loyalties and allegiance through
pressures of war have proven great obstacles in the evolution of what is now a majority–minority
city. Nina Revoyr's Southland gives a historic fictional recount of Los Angeles' most tested times
from perspectives looking in to the past, present, and future. The discovery of unpleasant truths
through grave social injustices provide a painful reminder of Los Angeles' history and consequently
a warning for future setbacks. Southland is an emotional testament to the inescapability of
discrimination within stratified cities and the unspoken necessity of assimilation that occurs as a
result. The theme of stratification presents itself early in the novel through an ... Show more content

Perhaps the implication is that those who assimilate better are granted higher status. In Sanchez's
"What's Good for Boyle Heights" he explains this stating, "The separate world of working–class

city of Los Angeles" (636). Interestingly, while following in the footsteps of her parents in pursuing
a top–drawer career, it seems throughout the novel that Jackie's stronger relationship with her aunt
and discoveries of her grandfather hint that her identity may have been decided out of parental and
societal pressure rather than her own desires. As a fourth–generation Japanese–American, racial
assimilation has become more of a non–issue in her day–to–day life. However, the need to fall

The Journey Of Energy : A Diagnostic Image
The Journey of Energy to Achieve a Diagnostic Image "Breath normally and stay still" Is what a
radiographer would say to Mrs. Watt before exiting the room to take an exposure of a left PA hand.
The .3 seconds that takes to capture the image on the IR is just one of the nine steps to produce a
quality diagnostic image. The energy needed to heat the tungsten filament is traced back to lower
granite dam in Washington where the energy is stored in Bonneville power and bought by Avista.
The power then streams across the snake river to Sacajawea hall into a wall outlet. The x–ray tube
housing unit is plugged into the wall outlet and inside the x–ray tube, the rotor produces the x–rays
which expose the anatomic part onto the IR. The nine steps that are required to produce an
acceptable and high–quality diagnostic image, starts at lower granite dam and ends with a manifest
image that helps radiologists determine the outcome of the patient.
The Energy
Lower Granite Dam In the area of Mayview Washington, just 47 miles away from Lewis–Clark
State College (LCSC) is where lower granite dam is located. The dam generates around 4,000
megawatts which in turns to about 4 million kilowatts to the Federal Columbia River Power System
(US ARMY, 2003). Although X–rays are measured by kilovoltage, the potential difference, and
kilowatts, the measure of power are the same. To use just 1% of the 4 million kilowatts generated by
the lower granite dam power system an x–ray tech could take over 650

Can Riots/Public Demonstrations Bring Change? A demonstration is an action by a group of people
in favor of a political or other cause. It normally consists of walking in a mass march formation and
either beginning with or meeting at a designated endpoint to hear speakers. Actions such as
blockades and sit–ins may also be referred to as demonstrations. Demonstrations can be violent or
nonviolent. Nonviolent demonstrations can turn into violent demonstrations depending on the

It is another thing entirely to pick up a picket sign and support it in public to stand together with
others to represent a movement. Demonstrations make the cause feel more real to participants.
Demonstrations put warm bodies and heavy feet out there representing an issue, taking up real space
and real time, attaching the cause to real faces and real voices who care enough about the cause to
go out there (Head "Why Protest Events Are Not a Waste of Time).
A successful demonstration energizes participants. It causes people to get excited over their cause.
People feel as though their voices are being heard. Demonstrations make people feel proud and good
about themselves because they took a stand on an issue. A good demonstration has an almost
religious effect on people, charging their batteries and inspiring them to get up and fight again
another day (Head "Why Protest Events Are Not a Waste of Time). The religious effect is very
helpful to the demonstrators giving them a reason to fight for their cause. It is very helpful for
veteran activists because it gives them a second wind which is just as helpful to the cause.
It is when demonstrations become violent that change does not happen. When demonstrations
become violent they are know to be riots. A riot is a form of civil disorder characterized often by
what is thought of as disorganized groups lashing out in a sudden and intense rash of violence
against authority, people, or property. Riots often

21st Century Revolution: The Rise of Anti-Government...
21st Century Revolution: The Rise of Anti–Government Rebellion In the many cases of society
rising against a ruler, it is the suffocation of the peoples voice that stirs the minds of those capable of
initiating change. It is in this overbearing suppression that small groups of courageous individuals
come together and rise up against authority for the sake of their people. Whether it be against a
monarchy, a terrorist group, or dictatorship, these groups face a definite opposition. Members of torn
nations agree that the rebels do nothing but add to civil unrest, that their acts of armed resistance
worsen the choke hold on their country. But it is here, in rebellion, that the minds of the oppressed
are able to stand on their own, for themselves; in defiance for the sake of freedom. Government
rebellion exists primarily due to interference of natural rights by a relentless government, reaching
as far back as the year 2740 BC, in Egypt's second dynasty (P.E), to the 2014 acts against the
Ukrainian and Venezuelan governments. This type of violence erupts when a ruler encroaches the
territory of a persons natural boundaries. For example, in the Bangkok Thailand revolts of 2014
against the upcoming government elections, a peaceful demonstrator was shot in the head and chest,
raising the death toll up to 10 from police brutality (Lefevre). Again in Egypt in 2013 a
representative from CNN spoke about the rioting between barricades, "This is the most intense

However, as passionate as they were, few protesters actually got violent and many were arrested
before anything erupted.
The dominant emotion of the event was anger, but the people were not actively hostile. The crowd
was simply voicing their opinion on the issues of globalization, and manifesting the potential
repercussions that the actions of the two institutions may have. The emotions throughout the protest
were definitely negative, but anger or frustration seemed to run consistently throughout.
The event continues through Sunday afternoon, though consequences of the event thus far have been
slight if any. Many people were arrested, the main charge being parading without a permit. The

The protesters in this case were rather non–violent in nature, and the police were quite peaceful

Seattle last November. I believe that this is due to the advanced planning of the police in securing
the area before people even gathered to protest. I believe that the protester's message has been heard

Visible Light Communication Essay
1. INTRODUCTION
Visible light communication (VLC) is an upcoming technique which can be used for data
communication which uses visible light. Li–fi is a subset of OWC–Optical wireless communication
and it can be used as a complement to RF communication (Wi–Fi or cellular network).
As Lamps are the common source of room lighting, they are providing a new pathway for linking
mobiles to the Internet, with the potential for wider bandwidth and it has a quicker response time
than Wi–fi. As there are differnet sources, the speed of the transmission also varies. Ordinary lamps
can transmit the signal with the speed of 10kbit/s whereas LEDs are used to get transmission speeds
upto 500Mbit/s and with the help of powerful LEDs we can achieve the speed of 10 Gbit/s.
At the receiving side, Devices containing photodiode receive signals from light sources. In few
cases, digital camera may also be sufficient. The sensors used for receiving signals are infact an
array of photodiodes(pixels), where each one can be used as separate channel to provide multi–
channel propagation.
PLC– Power Line Communication is also like VLC, developed in the same era and is the method of
transmitting data on transmission lines meant for electric power distribution to comsumers. The basic
principle involved in PLC is that these can be operated by adding a carrier signal to the existing
wiring system. The propagation problem is a limiting fator for PLC's. Low Frequencies are
generally to carry data over

The Violence Of The Watts Riot
The 1960s was a time for change. It promoted on going expectations of equality for all races. This
proved to be difficult for minorities. In August of 1965, civil unrest broke out, which lead to six–day
revolt called the Watts Riot. Nearly thirty years later another riot broke out which caused even
greater damage and left an even greater impact in our history, the Rodney King Riots. Both of these
events share similar qualities and devastating damages, however, their meanings are much harder to
decipher from one another. These impactful events in our society demonstrate how much there needs
to change in our society, especially when dealing with minorities. The Watts riots began in the
summer of 1965, in a city in Los Angeles called Watts. It all began with the arrest of a young
African American by a white California Highway Patrol officer. Now, it was not because he was
arrested for already doing something illegal, it was for the way the police officer treated the
individual. According to Lacine Holland, an eyewitness to the arrest, the officer "took him and threw
him in the car like a bag of laundry and kicked his feet in and slammed the door." (Flournoy) This
caused lots of unrest among the fellow residents of Watts. This was just the beginning of years of
pent up oppression for the minorities, which participated in the event. Similarly, in 1992, the
Rodney King riots also arose due to the acquittal of four Los Angeles Police Department officers for
their brutal beating

lawlessness – chaos, looting, arson, attacks, etc. My aim is to determine why the riots happened, so
that such violence can be prevented in the future. I will do this using scientific methodology and

slums outside of Los Angeles. This area is very poor and revolves around gang violence, sex and
drug dealing." That's correct, you guessed it right! It's the infamous Compton. The city that everyone
has heard in the news or in a song at one point or another. This definition was taken from Urban
Dictionary, a site that allows anyone to define specific words and terms. It is easy to see that
Compton is often related with drugs, crime and gangs, but the general public fails to realize the truth
behind the suburb. The smaller Los Angeles district is filled with hard working people that have

Tiny Compton, in response, made a large mistake by raising their property and school taxes and they
did a fantastic job at this and exceeded almost all other L.A towns during the time. Yikes.
Fortunately, this did not stop people from relocating there during World War II. Schools became so
crowded, understaffed and obtained an inadequate amount of resources making it evident that the
system was failing. When the schools funding became nearly forty percent from local tax payer's
dollars in the mid–sixties and early seventies, many fled the scene and moved to an area with lower
taxes, but the blacks remained. At this point, Compton was termed as the "Black Beverly Hills", but
this all began to go downhill after the riots in 1965. Drug and juvenile arrests reached an all–time
high during the 1960's and in 1969, the city had the highest crime rate in the state of California. In
"Taking Compton National", written by Ryan Reft, he states, "Shootings occurred at Compton and
Dominguez High Schools in 1972, the same year the suburb ranked second in reported homicides in
Los Angeles County beating out Long Beach, a city five times the size of Compton" (Reft).

J Coles Be Free Essay
For this critical reflection of a protest song I have chosen J Coles "Be Free". Through his music and
lyrics, J Cole is constantly pushing a political agenda, questioning society and its norms as well as
putting a focus on current and past events. There are multiple reasons why I chose this song and
genre. Since the Watts riots in California there has not been a large–scale African American rights
protest. Blues started off the musical African American protest wave and it seemed to end with the
death of Tupac. Since the early 2000's African American music has strayed away from protest and
evolved into story telling related to events in the life of the artist and the current trend in rap seems
to be about fashion. It is safe to say protest music from the African American perspective had died.
So it is amazing to see artist like J Cole still giving voice to the average person and questioning
those who control us. The new wave of protest music has resulted from the recent police – African
American interactions that have resulted in many black teenagers dead. These events have caused
riots in Missouri, Baltimore and Florida. J Coles " be Free" is a protest song about the mistreatment
of black people and the recent tragedy involving Michael Brown.
The Watts Riot in 1965 was a six day massive riot, which was both the largest and costliest urban
rebellion of the Civil Rights era (BBC). Over the course of the six–day riot, over 14,000 California

Police Discrimination And Discrimination
"Most middle–class whites have no idea what it feels like to be subjected to police who are routinely
suspicious, rude, belligerent, and brutal (Benjamin Spock)". In the United States and around the
world different people face discrimination, inequality, and racism because of the color of their skin
instead of content of their character. However, the shocking thing is that the violence can be seen in
the protectors of Peace and Liberty, the Police. They as humans also hold a sense of bias and racism
and act accordingly to their own personal desire instead of by the law. African–Americans have
cower and be weary around the police because the police are rude and belligerent. When someone of
a certain race are faced with inequality and discrimination there will be protest and when protest do
not work it becomes riots. The thing that sparked the Watts Riots was when a police officer attacks a
black male and his mother for drinking and driving. In a New York Times article it states, "When
another officer began hitting Mr. Frye and his mother, who had rushed to the scene, onlookers
started throwing stones and bottles". This shows that there was fault in Mr. Frye for drinking and
drinking but he should have been fine or arrested instead of being abused and assaulted. The
conflicts with the police has been going on for many years and this event sparked the protests into a
full out riot. The U.S History in Context states that,
"It required 13,000 California National Guardsmen to

Blue-Collar African American Life in Killer of Sheep by...
Every so often a film is made that makes a major impact on the culture of cinema. Charles Burnett
with his film Killer of Sheep (2007) made that impact. The film was created by Burnett as his
masters thesis from the UCLA film school in 1977, but was not formally released until 2007
(Burnett, Milestone Films). Even though it wasn't released for almost thirty years, the film received
international praise. Killer of Sheep brought to life a new image of African American cinema and
created a powerful impression of life in the black ghetto. Burnett created a realistic image of African
American blue–collar life in a non–traditional structure that changed African American cinema.
Burnett set Killer of Sheep in the Watts neighborhood of Los ... Show more content on

The film was shot on a very low budget of about Ten Thousand dollars (Burnett, Milestone Films).
Everything was shot hands–on with life in Watts. This helped to contribute the neo–realism style of
the film. The film mostly deals with the life of Stan (Henry G. Sanders), a kind–hearted
slaughterhouse worker who struggles to get anywhere in life. The film follows Stan as he goes
through day–to–day life. There is no connection major story arch to scenes in the film. It is events as
Stan tries to get ahead in life, but he never seems to get anywhere. This idea is solidified by the
additional shots of children playing that find their place throughout the film. Killer of Sheep starts
with a group of children playing war with dirt clots and hiding behind plywood scraps. These breaks
to shots of children add to realism and complete image of poor African American life. The struggle
isn't just the adults, but also the children who make the best of their living situations. Burnett was
able to capture African American life in a very real way that had not yet been seen in cinema. What
Burnett captures about African American life in the black ghetto is feeling of running in place with
no way out. Stan is never given a break. It creates the feeling of being trapped with no way out. Stan
does many things throughout the film that take him nowhere. At one point in the film he attempts to
take his family and friends to the horse races. On the way

Data Centers And Its Effects On The Internet
Have you ever wondered what has been able to power up all of the websites that we use on the
internet? Well, they are called data centers. These data centers are what support all of the digital
information. There are specific data centers that are used when people download movies off of
iTunes, look at their credit card balances through Visa's website, send a yahoo e–mail that has files
attached, buy items on Amazon, post tweets and even access online newspapers, but these data
centers have been creating some problems. Data centers need a lot of energy to run. They are known
to waste over 90 percent more electricity than is actually used. This is due to online companies
keeping their websites running all night, which wastes electricity. To improve the problem of
wasting electricity, they began using generators that give off deasil exhaust. As a result, the data
centers revived citations from the authorities for going against the clean air regulation. They only
resulted to this to try and save electricity. There has been a lot of energy used to power data centers.
So much energy used, that digital warehouses hold up to thirty billion watts of electricity. Peter
Gross, who has designed many data centers, said, "A single data center can take more power than a
medium sized town."(2) The amount of energy used usually depends on the specific company that
uses the data center. Most of the energy used in data centers are to keep the servers prepared just in
case of a surge,

Black Equality Movement Law Enforcement Tensions

  • 1. Black Equality Movement And Law Enforcement Thirty–five35 years ago, Philadelphia police dropped a bomb on a row house on 62nd and Osage Avenue in West Philadelphia. The bomb was dropped in an attempt to remove MOVE members from the house. The MOVE movement was black liberation group original created by John Africa in 1972. MOVE had had a difficult relationship with the Chicago police since its inception, and a particular tragic encounter with the police 7 years before the bombing – ; a standoff between the members and the police resulted in the death of one police officer and life sentences for 9 MOVE members (whom are know as the MOVE 9). However, tension between black equality movements and law enforcement had been high for the previous decade. The 1960's was a turbulent ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... On the morning after the shooting, the Congress of Racial Equality (CORE) went to the school nearby the scene. They demanded a civilian review board to discipline the police, but they were greeted by fifty officers holding nightsticks. Two hundred protesters , primarily whites and Puerto Ricans, were occupying the area in front of the school by noon. The next day 250 people attended James Powell's funeral under surveillance of policemen. In another part of town, people were putting on a rally discussing the rising crime rate in Hharlem. The funeral ended without any problems but later on the rally took a turn for the worst. The crowds made their way to the rooftops and began throwing bricks and bottles. The police rushed to secure the buildings arresting rioters and CORE members. Over 1,000 people assembled at the intersection of 7th Avenue and 125th street. The police began to break the crowd down into mobs which ran in different directions. One group made their way to the Theresa Hotel and a Molotov cocktail was thrown at a police car injuring an officer. The police, authorized to use firearms, proceeded to fire in the air to hold off rioters on the rooftops. One man was found dead after being shot by one of the officers random rounds. On the fourth day, July 19–20th, 75 volunteers created an "outpost" on 125th Street and 8th Avenue to develop aid for teenagers and women in the closing riot. • 3. The 1960's Essay The 1960's The 1960's was a decade that forever changed the culture and society of America. The 1960's were widely known as the decade of peace and love when in reality, minorities were struggling to gain freedom from segregation. The war to gain freedom for all minorites was a great obstacle to overcome. On February 20, 1960 four black college freshmen from the Negro Agricultural and Technical College in Greensboro, North Carolina quietly walked into a restaurant and sat down at the lunch counter. They were protesting the Jim Crow custom that blacks could be served while standing up but not while they were sitting at the lunch counter. The students quietly sat there politely asking for service until closing time. The next ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... He started a militant, all black group called the Black Panthers. On a bright Sunday in a ballroom in Manhattan in full view of 400 blacks Malcolm was murdered. Three men casually walked down the aisle; and from eight feet opened fire with sawed–off double barreled shotguns. Malcolm was killed by a pair of point blank range shots to the chest. On March 12, 1965, U.S. Highway 80 was blocked by sixty state troopers who stood in a wall three deep 400 yards past the Edmund Pettus Bridge, which crosses the Alabama river. When black marchers came within 100 yards the troopers were ordered to put on their gas masks. At twenty five yards the marchers stopped. Seconds later the command "troopers forward" was barked. The troopers moved in a solid wall pushing back the front marchers. At 75 yards the troopers were joined by posse men and deputies with tear gas canisters, in seconds the road was swirling with clouds of smoke. The mounted men brought out bull whips and began beating the marchers. Never in history had the American public responded with such fury. Over 15,000 thousand people marched in five different cities across the country. On Sunday, March 21, 1965 a crowd of 3,400 marchers lead by two Nobel Peace Prize winners, Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. and Ralph Bunche, departed from Selma on their four day march to Montgomery. They were accompanied by 2,900 military police, ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The Culprit that Causes Malformed Human Nature Variety is the spice of life, people play different roles to make such massive and splendid society. However, people do not always do things perfectly in order to fit in the society. In other words, unless wrong decision can be fixed as soon as possible, or it causes serious problems such as the Watts Riots in 1965. It is one of the most influential rebellions in California. Before the 1900s, California was primarily a city ran by whites and times were tough, apparently, the Law enforcement was every bit as rough. Since the early 20th century, the black population of the city doubled, yet blacks weren't the only ones moving to LA. Latinos and Negroes all were moving there in hopes of finding work. With politicians doing what politicians do, blacks and other races than White were looked down on. White people, or landowners in general, were not allowing other races to move into certain areas of the city (Behrens, 2011). Due to the inequality of rights, a segment of society begins forms its gap. With the years of embitterment of economic, political isolation and an exposure to the Marquette Frye incident, a sudden voice of anger soon began, spurred on by residents who lived in an area near Compton. The riots lasted six days, was reported 34 dead, 1,032 injured, approximately 4,000 arrested, and $40 million worth of property destroyed (Source#4). • 7. An Artistic Representation of the Sixties Through Across... John Stuart May 14, 2010 An Artistic Representation of the Sixties Through Across The Universe Many historical fiction films that we watch fail to depict history in an accurate way due to the emphasis on entertainment and revenue instead of keeping the integrity of its historical events. However, some motion pictures stay true to history while providing entertainment through fictional stories. Although the stories are fictional, movie writers can craft stories that represent the history, attitudes, and personalities of a time period in a historically accurate way. A prime example of a movie that is entertaining and represents history accurately is Across The Universe, directed by Julie Taymor in 2007. This film succeeds in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... For example, Prudence arrives through the bathroom window of Sadie's apartment, which is an allusion to the song "She Came Through The Bathroom Window", and Prudence's character is a direct reflection of the song "Dear Prudence". Characters names are off of song titles like "Hey Jude", "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds", and "Maxwels Silver Spoon". These are prime examples how the Beatles music influenced the portrayal of Taymor's characters, but also how the characters represent real people. Not only does the music represent the characters, but also Taymor integrates the songs into real historical events. For example, Jojo travels to New York from Detroit after his little brother was killed in Detroit's 12th Street Riot. The 12th Street Riot was one of the worst riots in American history; the governor sent the Michigan National Guard into Detroit, and President Johnson sent the U.S Army to subdue the riot. The end result was forty–three dead, 467 injured, over 7,200 arrests and more than 2,000 buildings burned down. The scale of the riot eclipsed the 1992 riots in Los Angeles. Through the portrayal of the riot the black community of the 12th street district sing "Let It Be". I must note that in analyzing music each song has different meanings interpretations to each person. However after analyzing "Let It Be", I have found the phrase "let it be" is about giving up your personal power to a higher power, which is what the people in the riots and ... How would it feel if you were black, lived in a city that was run by a white government, where poverty, unemployment and lack of education were all problems of everyday life? If everyone were treated equally, then it would not be a problem. But for inner city African Americans that isn't the case. As humans, there is only so much we can take when it comes to segregation before we act out. There is only so much hate a person can take before letting it be known, once a person is pushed over that threshold there is no holding back. Overwhelming hate and anger with ... (Auerbach 1688) That's all it took for this riot to come into play, a few people unhappy about the way the police handled the situation. The next thing you know its a few thousand unhappy people. In the Watts community, at that time, there were five hundred and forty thousand African Americans. Many of them had immigrated from the south in search of better work opportunities, as well as freedom from injustice and inequalities (Auerbach 1687). Once the police arrested Marquette Frye, angry Watts's residents began stoning passing cars and setting them on fire (Bradley 895).Two days later, on the morning of August 13th, massive amounts of people marched into the business district and started a free–for–all on the local stores. Firebombs and attacks against white owned businesses followed. Then they started dragging people from their cars and beating them. Watts had a storehouse of combustible materials located on the southeast side of Los Angeles. A minor clash between police and black residents resulted in an explosion that ripped through Watts (Magill 1924). • 11. Essay on If We Must Die by Claude McKay If We Must Die by Claude McKay Clearly provocative and even chilling, "If We Must Die" by Claude McKay stirs deep and powerful emotions in any who reads it. A poem inspired by violent race riots, it serves as a motivating anthem representative of an entire culture. Graphic and full of vengeance this poem is demanding action, not telling a story. McKay utilizes imagery to its fullest extent creating an end result which any man or woman, black or white, who has ever felt the hard and hateful hand of oppression can relate to. Written in the form of a Shakespearean sonnet, one could hardly mistake it for anything so pleasant. Sonnets being traditionally used for beautiful, appealing topics, already there is contradiction between ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Dogs rarely die a shameful death, but instead fight to the finish. Using this dichotomy he further illustrates the severance of and between the hunter and the hunted. McKay emphasizes within the first three lines that the conflict at hand is not merely a struggle then, but a fierce hunt in which there is no mercy and only one survivor. Again in the fifth line he requests that "If we must die, O let us nobly die,/ So that our precious blood may not be shed/ In vain" (5–7). He reasons that if there is to be bloodshed regardless, then the blood ought not to be shed without a fight. They should not lose their "precious blood" without any significance or effect, and not in an irreverent manner. If they succeed in avoidance of such vain, then McKay claims that "even the monsters we defy/ Shall be constrained to honor us through dead!" (7–8) McKay knows that upon a proud death, even those they fought will be compelled to acknowledge their bravery and pride. By referring to the enemy as "monsters," McKay makes it increasingly difficult to not follow him. There is no pity or compromising with monsters and every man, woman, and child has his or her own image of a monster. Given this open description they are then free to envision the monster as they see and feel it. They can construct it based on their own fears. • 13. Importance Of Energy Efficiency Essay Energy Efficiency Humans today are using much more electricity than we need to in our houses and this is impacting our world more then we realise. Although electricity is a huge advantage to humans it has the complete opposite effects on our environment. By using more electricity, we are using more of the earth's resources and if we keep going down this road then we are going to run out. The solution for this mass overuse of energy is to build houses which are more energy efficient. Features like LED lightbulbs, insulating and even positioning your house in the correct position for natural airflow instead of using air conditioning are all ways we can help improve this problem. What does energy efficiency mean? "Energy efficiency means using less energy to provide the same service." An example of this is where a LED lightbulb uses less electrical energy than a traditional incandescent lightbulb to produce the same amount of light. The phrase 'energy efficiency' can also be described as any kind of energy–saving measure. (1) How is electricity made? In 1831, scientist Michael Farday discovered the first form of electricity. He found that when a magnet moved inside a copper coil it created what is known as an electric current. This invention is known as a turbine generator. Even today, in full sized power stations this simple invention is still used and works very effectively. These power stations create mass amounts of energy to turn the turbines. Most of the time the energy is made from the heat, for example when coal is burned. More environmentally friendly power stations use wind or flowing water to turn these turbines. This is known as renewable energy because it will not run out, unlike when oil and coal are used.(3) How does the use of electricity impact our world? Environmental Affects Although humans use electricity for almost everything we do, we don't realise that this is harming our environment in many ways. The production of electricity is causing a major loss of the earth's natural resources such as: – Loss of coal and natural gases – Deforestation for mining (loss of trees) – Loss of habitat for rare and threatened species Another environmental issue resulting from the production of electricity ... You were sittin' home watchin' your TV, while I was paticipatin' in some anarchy," these are the lyrics Sublime uses in their song 'April 26, 1992' to describe what happened during the Los Angeles Riots of 1992. "First spot we hit it was my liquor store. I finally got all that alcohol I can't afford. With red lights flashin' time to retire, And then we turned that liquor store into a structure fire," people ,running through the streets, had no pity when demolishing small businesses and taking what ever they may want from them. That was not enough for some officers they believed King was resisting arrest. Due to their belief some cops shot Rodney with a taser gun. George Holliday, a men standing near the scene, video tapped the action. Rapidly this video was broadcasted not only across America but around the world. It would not be ignored by its viewers. Everyone who tuned in and watched was shocked. Justice was expected to be made towards the heartless cops who savagely bet Rodney King. When the judge, Bernard Kamins, who was Caucasian declared three of the four (also white) officers not guilty the public saw his decision very racist. The riots began in the evening after the judgment, and grew over the next two days, but they would continue for several days. Angry Los Angels residents went out to the streets to show their fury. "These people are angry and they have every right to be!" said a man to the news cameras during the destruction. Authorities failed miserably to control the people. As time went by the madness did not decrease but enlarged. The second day (Thursday, April 30, 1992) of rioting, the storekeepers did not stay put, but fought back to protect their shops. People have been rioting for the right for equality for as long as time. If it was not one race it was another. In the 1960's riots had sprung in Los Angeles, Cleveland, San Francisco, Chicago, Newark, and Detroit. All for the same reason that people are beginning to riot about in today's world for Equality no matter what race, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. After World War II, many African–Americans moved to the west of the United States mainly in Los Angeles, in hopes of finding a place where they were free to be themselves and live a life of freedom without slavery and discrimination. Isn't that what every person wants to be able to go to school and work without being afraid of the environment around them. How could a person feel comfortable raising a family in a place where they themselves are afraid to even walk out their front door. The African– Americans felt this exact same way and were tired of feeling that way. On August 11th of 1965 the Los Angeles Highway patrol stopped two African Americans who were supposedly drinking and driving. Could you imagine being afraid for your life when you are stopped by the very people whose one job is to protect you. On this night Watts resident Marquette Frye and his brother were pulled over only minutes from their house. Terrified their mother came out to claim the vehicle and ... Essay on Sante Fe Prison Riot Luisa Sauro September 28, 2011 Introduction to Corrections Term Paper New Mexico Penitentiary Riot Santé Fe, New Mexico The New Mexico penitentiary in south Santa Fe, New Mexico was no stranger to violence. This penitentiary has seen two riots in its past one July 19, 1922 and the other June 15, 1953, these however were nothing in comparison to the events to come. In the early morning hours of February 2, 1980 two prisoners began what would be recorded as one of the most violent prison riots in the history of the American correctional system. 33 prisoners died, over 200 inmates were injured and 12 correction officers were taken hostage of those 12, seven were badly beaten and raped. The Governor, Bruce King was well aware of the conditions and issues of the prison and warnings of a prison riot went disregarded. Prisoners began by taking control of south–side Dormitory E–2; within minutes the prisoners had taken four more officers in the dorm hostage, a fleeing officer left keys behind which gave the inmates complete access to the main control center, inmate cells, doors and weapons. By midafternoon violent offenders from solitary confinement had been released and the violence had gotten out of control. The prisoners had a particular area they could not access, the protective custody area, this area held the mentally ill and vulnerable inmates it included those inmates convicted of sex crimes and yes, those labeled snitches. Armed with blowtorches left by a construction crew, the inmates cut through the bars of the cells and in the early morning of February 3 began so did the brutal slaughter several inmates. Negotiations between inmates and authorities stalled but, eventually the inmates come up with 11 demands which included basic prison conditions like overcrowding, inmate discipline, educational services and improving food. I didn 't need to go online and find a list of farmer 's markets in LA and narrow it down by the low income zip code, not when I lived in one. As a resident of a low income neighborhood, I knew exactly where to go: I would go to the Watt 's Healthy Farmer 's Market. Held every Saturday, whether it rains or shines, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., the Watt 's Healthy Farmer Market is located in the Ted Watkins Memorial Park, appropriately named after Ted Watkins, the founder of the Watts Labor Community Action Committee (WLCAC). WLCAC is an influencing non–profit community based organization which serves to provide affordable housing, jobs, and social services to the residents of Watts and South Los Angeles, as well as fight poverty and ultimately, increasing the quality of life of the neighborhood. It was organized following the 1965 Watts riots with the support of several labor unions and funded by grants from the government at varies levels. The park was named in 1995 and is a 28–acre facility taking up one whole block with the farmer 's market taking place in the southwest corner, conveniently located just a few steps away from one of the park 's parking lots. Surrounding the park, are a few interesting things I 'd like to point out. There are quite a bit of stores, both big and small, as well as several residential homes. West of ... The guards held the keys to the entire cell block and it did not take long for the prisoners to take full advantage of the keys. Four beaten guards were released within hours of the attack but 8 were retained. The riot was started for many reasons but the most obvious reason was TB testing on Muslims, they do not believe in using needles to take blood or for injections. A lot of what the public thinks about the riot is most likely false information. One reporter said that 172 inmate bodies were piled up inside the prison, when only 11 died. The reporters did not help the negotiations at all. Inmates with battery powered TV's were able to see sharpshooters position themselves on the roofs. Some negotiators believe the riot could have ended hours after it had started when prisoners tried to negotiate using bullhorns but could not because of helicopters hovering so low. The media wasn't always a bad thing though one reporter was able to exchange a hostage to allow an inmate some air time. When the riot started the guards went into small rooms called safe wells. The rooms were made out of 2 layers of block and had steel reinforced doors. The doors did their job but the prisoners started to beat at the block walls with weight lifting bars. Soon they busted a hole into the room and dragged the guards through the walls. The guards were assigned men to watch them; these men were ordered to kill the guards if the prison came under attack. Watts Riot Research Paper Yola Halpert Professor Ottina CRJ 102: Intro to Policing May 5, 2016 The Watts Riots The Watts Riots erupted on the backdrop of simmering racial tensions in the United States. There were many varied long term causes for the eruption of the riot that rocked Watts and the surrounding areas, but the immediate cause of the riot was routine police work – police responding to a call of a concerned citizen worried about a man driving his car erratically. The Watts neighborhood of Los Angeles, was predominantly black and racial tension had reached a breaking point when two white policemen stopped, Marquette Frye, a black motorist whom they suspected of drunken driving on the evening of August 11, 1965. Most of the victims were killed by the LAPD and the National Guard (www.southcentralhistory.com).The Watts riot was the worst urban riot in 20 years and foreshadowed the many rebellions to occur in the years that followed in Detroit, Newark, and other American cities (History.com). In the aftermath of the riot there were three major outcomes. One, the McCone Commission was set up by the government to study the riots. The McCone Commission found that people rioted because of unemployment, bad schools and education, and prior instances of police brutality (www.southcentralhistory.com). A second outcome following was an independent commission, chaired by former Illinois Gov. Otto Kerner, that investigated the causes of the rioting. The Kerner Commission issued its landmark report in 1968, concluding: "Our nation is moving toward two societies, one black, one white –– separate and unequal" (www.cnn.com). Another major outcome was the creation of SWAT teams. They were created with the vision of three police officers: Officer Nelson, who originally came up with the concept of a specially equipped and highly trained unit, Inspector Gates, who spear headed the push to make it happen and Ed Davis had the foresight to approve the program. • 27. Protest Movements In The Civil Rights Movement The social dynamic of the United States is more unique and diverse than ever before. With a population compiled of various groups of people in categorization of race, religion, economic class, and so on, there are bound to be multiple stances and opinions on political policy, social actions, law, and past experiences. With this idea of different opinions, which everyone is entitled to, there are disagreements, and in some cases, there can be protesting. From the civil rights movement, abortion, and social justice, different groups of people are separated or divided when it comes to issues like these, but what happens when people try to take advantage of a protest and turn violent? In the past few years, it seems that large protest movements become more and more chaotic, violent, and out of control, reckless violence outweighing good intentioned peaceful protests. Not to say that protesting has changed in the sense of purpose, it has always been in part to display some form of unhappiness. Instead, rather it is that the movements today are different, and such movement's narratives can be taken advantage of. Of course, protesting has been around for a long time. the point can even be made that our own country was founded through forms of protesting. A citizen exercising their right to protest is protected by the constitution, there is no denying that. However, in recent years, the subject of protests appears to have shifted to primarily tackling social issues, subjects that cannot necessarily be solved by the passing of a law. We see examples of protesting social issues particularly when it comes to cases of police brutality, and the black lives matter movement. Taking on the believed systematic oppressions, this cause has the goal of pushing forth a social movement that can end social injustices. Issues taken on by some movements today cannot be solved by legislation as easily as certain problems throughout our countries history. Social issues are embedded deeply into our society, and that is where the difference is between now and before. Additionally, while these movements are happening, they are also being taken advantage of. A public march protesting something can turn ugly fast by minority of the group. ... Countless of individuals were filled with so much anger and loss of hope for a better future. In the 1960s, Los Angeles had very few neighborhoods that African Americans were "allowed" to live in. Analysis Of In Feed By Walker Percy Walker Percy, an author and philosopher, said that, "You live in a deranged age, more deranged that usual, because in spite of great scientific and technological advances, man has not the faintest idea of who he is or what he is doing." In Feed, a satirical novel by M.T. Anderson, the characters often seem as if they don't have an understanding of what is happening in the world around them. Feed is mainly about Titus, the narrator who displays more complexity than his friends, and Violet, his individualistic girlfriend who is constantly challenging concepts in their world. In addition to Titus and Violet, M.T. Anderson includes many significant secondary figures, one of which is named Quendy. Quendy is more mainstream, meaning that she follows the current trends and is very dependent on the feed, and is more of an average teenager in their society. Quendy, a static character, is used to satirize the idea of trends throughout the novel and to show that because of this, people don't seem to have their own opinions. M.T. Anderson uses Quendy to illuminate how trends work in their society. Throughout the book, Quendy is seen trying to keep up with the current styles, which constantly involves checking to make sure they have not changed. For the air compressor we may log more frequently, for example every five seconds, if we find that the compressor is switching mode very frequently, otherwise logging at 60–second intervals may be enough. The purpose of the continuous measurement will also affect the logging interval. If the first visit gives us the impression that the compressed air system is an important part of the energy use, we may measure more carefully to have enough information to suggest detailed measures. The drawing of the electric (Table 3. Example of plan for energy measurements to allocate electricity use to unit processes.) In this case we will have a measurement from a switchgear cabinet that covers several unit processes, for example lighting and forklift charging for a garage and picking stock, as shown in Figure 8. The data from clamp no. 1 in the switchgear must be complemented by simulta‐ neous measurements from clamps 2 and 3 in the distribution board, where clamp 2 measures the total incoming current to the Central Garage board and clamp 3 measures the outgoing current to the forklift chargers. They started living on 12th street in Detroit. The riot started there because African Americans were fed up with the way that they were being treated. Many years prior to the riot there were already racial issues. The government made it hard for African Americans to buy houses in the 1950s. During that time, white people were resisting African Americans from moving into Detroit. They were gathering outside of houses owned by African Americans until they would leave. The .3 seconds that takes to capture the image on the IR is just one of the nine steps to produce a quality diagnostic image. The energy needed to heat the tungsten filament is traced back to lower granite dam in Washington where the energy is stored in Bonneville power and bought by Avista. The power then streams across the snake river to Sacajawea hall into a wall outlet. The x–ray tube housing unit is plugged into the wall outlet and inside the x–ray tube, the rotor produces the x–rays which expose the anatomic part onto the IR. It normally consists of walking in a mass march formation and either beginning with or meeting at a designated endpoint to hear speakers. Actions such as blockades and sit–ins may also be referred to as demonstrations. Demonstrations can be violent or nonviolent. Nonviolent demonstrations can turn into violent demonstrations depending on the circumstances. Demonstrations are used around the world to take a stand on issues that the public find important. It is another thing entirely to pick up a picket sign and support it in public to stand together with others to represent a movement. Demonstrations make the cause feel more real to participants. Demonstrations put warm bodies and heavy feet out there representing an issue, taking up real space and real time, attaching the cause to real faces and real voices who care enough about the cause to go out there (Head "Why Protest Events Are Not a Waste of Time). A successful demonstration energizes participants. It causes people to get excited over their cause. People feel as though their voices are being heard. Demonstrations make people feel proud and good about themselves because they took a stand on an issue. A good demonstration has an almost religious effect on people, charging their batteries and inspiring them to get up and fight again another day (Head "Why Protest Events Are Not a Waste of Time). The religious effect is very helpful to the demonstrators giving them a reason to fight for their cause. It is very helpful for veteran activists because it gives them a second wind which is just as helpful to the cause. It is when demonstrations become violent that change does not happen. When demonstrations become violent they are know to be riots. • 57. 21st Century Revolution: The Rise of Anti-Government... 21st Century Revolution: The Rise of Anti–Government Rebellion In the many cases of society rising against a ruler, it is the suffocation of the peoples voice that stirs the minds of those capable of initiating change. It is in this overbearing suppression that small groups of courageous individuals come together and rise up against authority for the sake of their people. Whether it be against a monarchy, a terrorist group, or dictatorship, these groups face a definite opposition. Members of torn nations agree that the rebels do nothing but add to civil unrest, that their acts of armed resistance worsen the choke hold on their country. But it is here, in rebellion, that the minds of the oppressed are able to stand on their own, for themselves; in defiance for the sake of freedom. Government rebellion exists primarily due to interference of natural rights by a relentless government, reaching as far back as the year 2740 BC, in Egypt's second dynasty (P.E), to the 2014 acts against the Ukrainian and Venezuelan governments. This type of violence erupts when a ruler encroaches the territory of a persons natural boundaries. For example, in the Bangkok Thailand revolts of 2014 against the upcoming government elections, a peaceful demonstrator was shot in the head and chest, raising the death toll up to 10 from police brutality (Lefevre). Again in Egypt in 2013 a representative from CNN spoke about the rioting between barricades, "This is the most intense gunfire that I've ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The two institutions were to have their spring meeting this weekend and the approximately ten thousand protesters, whose main point is the elimination of poverty, paraded down the streets of DC The protesters feel that what the IMF and World Bank do not see the short term effects of their proposals for economic growth, which include unemployment and increased poverty. The protesters feel that the only people benefiting from such ideas are the large corporations. The dominant emotion of the event was anger, but the people were not actively hostile. The crowd was simply voicing their opinion on the issues of globalization, and manifesting the potential repercussions that the actions of the two institutions may have. The emotions throughout the protest were definitely negative, but anger or frustration seemed to run consistently throughout. The event continues through Sunday afternoon, though consequences of the event thus far have been slight if any. Many people were arrested, the main charge being parading without a permit. The meeting between the World Band and the IMF was not even disturbed during the protest, as police had barricaded some fifty blocks around these buildings. The protesters in this case were rather non–violent in nature, and the police were quite peaceful when they did have to arrest someone. This protest was quite tame in comparison to the one in Seattle last November. I believe that this is due to the advanced planning of the police in securing the area before people even gathered to protest. • 63. Visible Light Communication Essay 1. INTRODUCTION Visible light communication (VLC) is an upcoming technique which can be used for data communication which uses visible light. Li–fi is a subset of OWC–Optical wireless communication and it can be used as a complement to RF communication (Wi–Fi or cellular network). As Lamps are the common source of room lighting, they are providing a new pathway for linking mobiles to the Internet, with the potential for wider bandwidth and it has a quicker response time than Wi–fi. As there are differnet sources, the speed of the transmission also varies. Ordinary lamps can transmit the signal with the speed of 10kbit/s whereas LEDs are used to get transmission speeds upto 500Mbit/s and with the help of powerful LEDs we can achieve the speed of 10 Gbit/s. At the receiving side, Devices containing photodiode receive signals from light sources. In few cases, digital camera may also be sufficient. The sensors used for receiving signals are infact an array of photodiodes(pixels), where each one can be used as separate channel to provide multi– channel propagation. PLC– Power Line Communication is also like VLC, developed in the same era and is the method of transmitting data on transmission lines meant for electric power distribution to comsumers. The basic principle involved in PLC is that these can be operated by adding a carrier signal to the existing wiring system. The propagation problem is a limiting fator for PLC's. Low Frequencies are generally to carry data over ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 65. The Violence Of The Watts Riot The 1960s was a time for change. It promoted on going expectations of equality for all races. This proved to be difficult for minorities. In August of 1965, civil unrest broke out, which lead to six–day revolt called the Watts Riot. Nearly thirty years later another riot broke out which caused even greater damage and left an even greater impact in our history, the Rodney King Riots. Both of these events share similar qualities and devastating damages, however, their meanings are much harder to decipher from one another. These impactful events in our society demonstrate how much there needs to change in our society, especially when dealing with minorities. The Watts riots began in the summer of 1965, in a city in Los Angeles called Watts. It all began with the arrest of a young African American by a white California Highway Patrol officer. Now, it was not because he was arrested for already doing something illegal, it was for the way the police officer treated the individual. According to Lacine Holland, an eyewitness to the arrest, the officer "took him and threw him in the car like a bag of laundry and kicked his feet in and slammed the door." (Flournoy) This caused lots of unrest among the fellow residents of Watts. This was just the beginning of years of pent up oppression for the minorities, which participated in the event. Similarly, in 1992, the Rodney King riots also arose due to the acquittal of four Los Angeles Police Department officers for their brutal beating ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 67. London Riots In this essay, I will be proposing a suitable research method to identify the causes of the 2011 London Riots that took place between the 6th August and the 10th August, which resulted in lawlessness – chaos, looting, arson, attacks, etc. My aim is to determine why the riots happened, so that such violence can be prevented in the future. I will do this using scientific methodology and choose the most appropriate method for my research. Firstly, a summary of the Experimental Method. It originates from a research question, but you could say the idea behind the question is derived from intuition. This leads to a hypothesis, which is "the initial building block in the scientific method." Source: (Bradford, A. (2015) – www.livescience.com) A hypothesis ... Source: (Research Methods in Psychology – www.study.com) There are a few different types of survey methods, one of them being questionnaires. Questionnaires can be printed onto paper, then handed out to people and posted through their doors, or they can be accessible through the internet – sent to people via email or completed as an online questionnaire. An advantage of this is "it allows minimal contact between the researcher and the participant." The telephone surveys or the web surveys are more convenient for participants to complete, in the comfort of their own home, or on the go, as long as they are very brief, with only a few questions asked. However, it is very easy to lie or exaggerate, especially if you're not directly in the presence of the interviewer. This is where face– to–face interviews come in – a direct way of obtaining information, with the interviewer asking the participant questions. Also, if you are using random sampling, you can easily select and ask random people on the road to take part in your survey, avoiding ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 69. The Watts Riots Provided the unofficial definition, majority of the United States could easily guess the word: "The slums outside of Los Angeles. This area is very poor and revolves around gang violence, sex and drug dealing." That's correct, you guessed it right! It's the infamous Compton. The city that everyone has heard in the news or in a song at one point or another. This definition was taken from Urban Dictionary, a site that allows anyone to define specific words and terms. It is easy to see that Compton is often related with drugs, crime and gangs, but the general public fails to realize the truth behind the suburb. The smaller Los Angeles district is filled with hard working people that have been disenfranchised and defined as numbers and statistics. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Tiny Compton, in response, made a large mistake by raising their property and school taxes and they did a fantastic job at this and exceeded almost all other L.A towns during the time. Yikes. Fortunately, this did not stop people from relocating there during World War II. Schools became so crowded, understaffed and obtained an inadequate amount of resources making it evident that the system was failing. When the schools funding became nearly forty percent from local tax payer's dollars in the mid–sixties and early seventies, many fled the scene and moved to an area with lower taxes, but the blacks remained. At this point, Compton was termed as the "Black Beverly Hills", but this all began to go downhill after the riots in 1965. Drug and juvenile arrests reached an all–time high during the 1960's and in 1969, the city had the highest crime rate in the state of California. In "Taking Compton National", written by Ryan Reft, he states, "Shootings occurred at Compton and Dominguez High Schools in 1972, the same year the suburb ranked second in reported homicides in Los Angeles County beating out Long Beach, a city five times the size of Compton" (Reft). • 71. J Coles Be Free Essay For this critical reflection of a protest song I have chosen J Coles "Be Free". Through his music and lyrics, J Cole is constantly pushing a political agenda, questioning society and its norms as well as putting a focus on current and past events. There are multiple reasons why I chose this song and genre. Since the Watts riots in California there has not been a large–scale African American rights protest. Blues started off the musical African American protest wave and it seemed to end with the death of Tupac. Since the early 2000's African American music has strayed away from protest and evolved into story telling related to events in the life of the artist and the current trend in rap seems to be about fashion. It is safe to say protest music from the African American perspective had died. So it is amazing to see artist like J Cole still giving voice to the average person and questioning those who control us. The new wave of protest music has resulted from the recent police – African American interactions that have resulted in many black teenagers dead. These events have caused riots in Missouri, Baltimore and Florida. J Coles " be Free" is a protest song about the mistreatment of black people and the recent tragedy involving Michael Brown. The Watts Riot in 1965 was a six day massive riot, which was both the largest and costliest urban rebellion of the Civil Rights era (BBC). • 73. Police Discrimination And Discrimination "Most middle–class whites have no idea what it feels like to be subjected to police who are routinely suspicious, rude, belligerent, and brutal (Benjamin Spock)". In the United States and around the world different people face discrimination, inequality, and racism because of the color of their skin instead of content of their character. However, the shocking thing is that the violence can be seen in the protectors of Peace and Liberty, the Police. They as humans also hold a sense of bias and racism and act accordingly to their own personal desire instead of by the law. African–Americans have cower and be weary around the police because the police are rude and belligerent. When someone of a certain race are faced with inequality and discrimination there will be protest and when protest do not work it becomes riots. The thing that sparked the Watts Riots was when a police officer attacks a black male and his mother for drinking and driving. In a New York Times article it states, "When another officer began hitting Mr. Frye and his mother, who had rushed to the scene, onlookers started throwing stones and bottles". This shows that there was fault in Mr. Frye for drinking and drinking but he should have been fine or arrested instead of being abused and assaulted. The conflicts with the police has been going on for many years and this event sparked the protests into a full out riot. • 75. Blue-Collar African American Life in Killer of Sheep by... Every so often a film is made that makes a major impact on the culture of cinema. Charles Burnett with his film Killer of Sheep (2007) made that impact. The film was created by Burnett as his masters thesis from the UCLA film school in 1977, but was not formally released until 2007 (Burnett, Milestone Films). Even though it wasn't released for almost thirty years, the film received international praise. Killer of Sheep brought to life a new image of African American cinema and created a powerful impression of life in the black ghetto. Burnett created a realistic image of African American blue–collar life in a non–traditional structure that changed African American cinema. Burnett set Killer of Sheep in the Watts neighborhood of Los ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... The film was shot on a very low budget of about Ten Thousand dollars (Burnett, Milestone Films). Everything was shot hands–on with life in Watts. This helped to contribute the neo–realism style of the film. The film mostly deals with the life of Stan (Henry G. Sanders), a kind–hearted slaughterhouse worker who struggles to get anywhere in life. The film follows Stan as he goes through day–to–day life. There is no connection major story arch to scenes in the film. It is events as Stan tries to get ahead in life, but he never seems to get anywhere. This idea is solidified by the additional shots of children playing that find their place throughout the film. Killer of Sheep starts with a group of children playing war with dirt clots and hiding behind plywood scraps. These breaks to shots of children add to realism and complete image of poor African American life. The struggle isn't just the adults, but also the children who make the best of their living situations. Burnett was able to capture African American life in a very real way that had not yet been seen in cinema. What Burnett captures about African American life in the black ghetto is feeling of running in place with no way out. Stan is never given a break. It creates the feeling of being trapped with no way out. Stan does many things throughout the film that take him nowhere. These data centers are what support all of the digital information. There are specific data centers that are used when people download movies off of iTunes, look at their credit card balances through Visa's website, send a yahoo e–mail that has files attached, buy items on Amazon, post tweets and even access online newspapers, but these data centers have been creating some problems. Data centers need a lot of energy to run. They are known to waste over 90 percent more electricity than is actually used. This is due to online companies keeping their websites running all night, which wastes electricity. To improve the problem of wasting electricity, they began using generators that give off deasil exhaust. As a result, the data centers revived citations from the authorities for going against the clean air regulation. They only resulted to this to try and save electricity. There has been a lot of energy used to power data centers. So much energy used, that digital warehouses hold up to thirty billion watts of electricity. Peter Gross, who has designed many data centers, said, "A single data center can take more power than a medium sized town."(2) The amount of energy used usually depends on the specific company that uses the data center.
