 Standards are useful in international trade because different standards can
create trade barriers.
 Standards provide clear references that are recognized internationally.
 Standards facilitate trade through enhanced product quality and reliability.
 ISO covers a wide variety of standards.

 It is a series of environmental management standards developed and
published by the International Organization for Standardization ( ISO ).
 The ISO 14000 standards provide a guideline or framework for
organizations that need to organize and improve their environmental
management efforts.
 Serves as a tool to improve environmental performance
 Provides a systematic way of managing an organization’s environmental
affairs.

PURPOSES OF ISO 14000
 Deal with how a company manages the environment inside and in
surroundings.
 Standards also call for analysis of the entire life cycle of a product, from raw
material to disposal.
 These standards do not mandate a particular level of pollution or
performance, but focus on awareness of the processes and procedures.
 The ISO 14000 standards do not absolve a company from any national or local
regulations.

 The ISO 14000 series are based on the British standard BS 7750 which was
instituted in 1992.
 This standard also served as the basis for the European Union's Eco-
Management and Audit Scheme (EMAS).
 It is a series of 21 related, auditable, international standards and
supplementary guidelines.
 The ISO 14000 is divided in two separate areas

Management System and its requirement.
ISO 14001:2004 is improved version.
ISO 14001;2015 is the latest version.
It is the only standard in the ISO 14000 family that can be used
for certification.
ISO 14001 is the world’s most recognized framework.
