1. Community Cat Program
How about giving it a go in your town?!
!
Community cat programs are gaining attention nationwide, as one good
way of living together with homeless or feral cats.!
!
!
!!!
!
!
…but they poop and
pee in my garden! It’s
really a problem!
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
…but they’re so noisy!
…but there are baby
kittens being born
around my house.
Community Cat Programs Are a Solution
It is a crime to throw
away (dump) animals.!
動物愛護法
Decide on a food and water location.!
! (Don’t leave food out.)!
Clean up litter boxes and the area around the cats.!
Spay and neuter the cats to prevent the population
from growing.!
Find new homes for adoptable cats.
Goal
Reduce the amount of trouble caused by
homeless cats.!
In time, reduce the number of cats without
caregivers to zero.!
2. The Basics for Creating Local Rules
! ! !
Gather Information!
! People wanting to start a program should first gather ! !
! information about the numbers of cats, their gender, !
! feeding places, and should find out if any of them are !
! owned cats. Records should be made of this data.!
!
Hold a Community Meeting About Cat Issues!
! Find out about who is having cat problems and who is ! !
! making efforts to care for cats on their own. Perhaps invite a person
! to speak who is already successfully doing this kind of !
! program. Listen and decide if now is a good time to start a !
! program in your area.!
!
Make Rules for the Program!
! (1) Feeding (place, time, responsible person, etc…)!
! (2) Toilet Needs (place, cleaning, responsible person, etc…)!
!
Spay and Neuter!
! Don’t forget about details like making sure cats get the V-! shaped
! cut in their ear during surgery. This mark allows others to know that
! these cats are part of a community cat program.!
!
Consider about Sustained Maintenance!
! (1) Look for ways to reduce cat dumping.!
! (2) Use community patrols, etc… to make sure the information !
! about local cats is up to date.!
! (3) In some cases, community cats can become house cats. !
! It is important to include adoption as part of the program.
☆The Ministry of the Environment has included Community Cat programs
in their guidelines since平成22年2月。!
☆Chiba prefecture has adopted these guidelines since 平成24年3月。
