This document discusses structured management in organizations and its application to project management. It describes five types of organizational structures: traditional hierarchy, flatter organizations, flat organizations, flatarchies, and holacratic organizations. For project management, it discusses programmatic, matrix, and project-based structures. It also outlines autocratic, paternalistic, democratic, and laissez-faire management styles. Finally, it provides an example of a project using a matrix structure and democratic style with Scrum methodology.
2. What is Structured Management
A structured management or a structured management in an
organization defines how activities such as task allocation, coordination and
supervision are directed toward the achievement of organizational aims.
3. Here is an animation video describing what is organizational structure mean
4. Types Organizational Structures
There are 5 Types Of Organizational Structures:
The traditional hierarchy
Flatter organizations
Flat organizations
Flatarchies organizations
Holacratic organizations
5. The traditional hierarchy
The traditional take on organizational structure in a business is hierarchical, meaning
power flows vertically and upward, and employees are departmentalized. All employees
follow a chain of command.
6. Flatter organizations
A flat organization (also known as horizontal organization or delayering) has
an organizational structure with few or no levels of middle management between staff
and executives.
7. Flat organizations
A flat organization (also known as horizontal organization or delayering) has
an organizational structure with few or no levels of middle management between staff and
executives.
8. Flatarchies organizations
Flatarchies are organizations that aren't quite flat nor are they hierarchical. They are
actually a combination of both types of structures. In other words, an organization can be
relatively flat yet can create an ad hoc hierarchy to work on a project or function and then
disband
9. Holacratic organizations
Holacracy is a system of flat organizational governance trademarked by Holacracy One, in
which authority and decision-making are distributed throughout a holarchy of self-
organizing teams rather than being vested in a management hierarchy
11. What Project Management
Structure of an organization can have a
major impact on project management.
One of the main objectives of the structure
is to reduce uncertainty and confusion that
typically occurs at the project initiation
phase. The structure defines the
relationships among members of the
project management and the relationships
with the external environment.
12. Types of Project Organizations
Structures
Programmatic based
Matrix based
Project based
13. Programmatic based
When project managers have authority only within the program focus or area. The
programmatic focus refers to a traditional structure in which program sector
managers have formal authority over most resources.
14. Matrix based
When project manager shares responsibility with other program unit managers. Matrix
based project organizations allow program units to focus on their specific technical
competencies and allow projects to be staffed with specialists from throughout the
organization.
15. Project based
When project managers have total authority. In this type of organization project
managers have a high level of authority to manage and control the project resources.
16. Management Styles in Project
Management
Autocratic
Autocratic or authoritarian, the manager makes all the decisions, keeping the
information and decision making among the senior management.
Paternalistic
Paternalistic form is where the manager makes decisions in the best interests of the
employees rather than the organization
Democratic
Democratic style is one where the manager allows the employees to take part in
decision-making, where everything is agreed by the majority.
Laissez-faire
Laissez-faire style, the manager's role is marginal and the employees manage their
own areas within the project; the manager evades the duties of management and
uncoordinated delegation occurs.
