Find the mission and values statements for four different hospital types. Do their missions and
values reconcile with your expectations for the type of organization? Look at a religious based
organization. Does their mission and values reflect their religious teachings and mission? Now
examine a for-profit hospital. Does their mission and values include the need to increase their
owners' value and maximizing their earning? Why do you think the missions and values are
structured as they are? 1. The missions and values are structured as they are to meet the desires
of the stakeholders. The specifics of this question must be left to the particulars of the
instructional environment.
Solution
We will describe mission and value statements of four hospitals given below:-
a) Seattle Children's Hospital
Mission statement:-
We provide hope, care and cures to help every child live the healthiest and most fulfilling life
possible.
Value statement:-
Compassion
Empathy for patients, their families and staff is ingrained in our history and inspires our future.
We do more than treat the child; we practice family-centered care as the cornerstone of
compassion.
Excellence
Our promise to treat, prevent and cure pediatric disease is an enormous responsibility. We follow
the highest standards of quality and safety and expect accountability from each other.
Integrity
At all times, we approach our work with openness, transparency, decency and humility. It is our
responsibility to use resources wisely to sustain Seattle Children’s for generations to come.
Collaboration
We work in partnership with patients, their families, staff, providers, volunteers and donors. This
spirit of respectful cooperation extends beyond our walls to our business partners and the
community.

We embrace and find strength in the diversity of our patients, their families, staff and

b) Rochester Regional Health
Mission statement:-
To enhance lives and preserve health by enabling access to a comprehensive, fully integrated
network of the highest quality and most affordable care, delivered with kindness, integrity and
respect.

efficient organization that delivers excellent, appropriate care in the right place at the right time.

care. We treat those we serve and each other with kindness and compassion and strive to better
understand and respond to the needs of a diverse community.

Patients and families have placed their lives and health in our hands. At Hartford HealthCare our
first priority - and the rule of medicine - is to protect them from harm. We believe that
maintaining the highest safety standards is critical to delivering high-quality care and that a safe
workplace protects us all.

Value Statement:-
At UVA Health System, we put the patient at the center of everything we do. We ASPIRE to
create a culture of trust, respect and engagement through our values:
Accountability: Acknowledging and assuming responsibility for where we have succeeded and
failed in terms of our actions, decisions, policies and results
Stewardship: Responsibly and carefully managing our resources and commitment to continual
improvement and learning while acknowledging shortcomings or problems in our quest
Professionalism: Approaching all that we do in a collaborative way, delivering excellent care
through the lens of helpfulness, positivity, kindness and competency

While going though the mission and value statements of the four hospitals, it can be clearly seen
that all of them are designed keeping customers (or patients) in mind. Of these four hospitals,
Hartford Hospital is for-profit hospital and even its mission and value statements imbibe
customer and community centricity with focus on research and technological innovations. It's
mission and value staements do not directly speak for maximizing owner's vale and earnings.
Now let us look at the mission and value statement of a religious organization:
Organization - Lifeway
Mission Statement:-
LifeWay Christian Resources exists to assist churches and believers to evangelize the world to
Christ, develop believers, and grow churches by being the best provider of relevant, high quality,
high value Christian products and services.
Value Statement:-
1. Trustworthy
We believe the Bible is the eternal, inerrant Word of God, and is the plumb line for all of our
resources, and for everything we say and do. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
2. Collaborative
We seek to work with churches and believers in Christ to discover the best biblical solutions for
life. The employees of LifeWay will work together as one to fulfill this purpose. (Ecclesiastes
4:9-10)
3. Innovative
The Bible is unchanging, but church practices and the needs of Christians will change over the
years. We will seek to meet the changing needs through wise risk taking, innovation, and
excellence. (I Corinthians 9:22-23)
4. Comprehensive
We seek to provide a wide array of resources to meet the needs of churches and Christians.
(Luke 12:48b)
5. Transformational
We seek to provide the best resources to be a part of the process of spiritually transforming
believers and churches. (2 Cor. 3:18)
In this example, it can be clearly seen that the statements are designed to forwarrd Christ's
teachings and mission and is put very loudly.
From these examples, we can infer that mission and value statements are designed to cater to
their core recipients, the listeners of the message. In the case of four hospitals, the motive of prfit
earning was not reflected as customers (patients) are concerned about the treatment, care and
experience they receive. In case of a Religious organizations, the followers need to be remined
about the beliefs and thus such overt messaging is utilized.
So, mission and value statements should be designed keeping in mind:-
a) The recipient
b) Subtle/Overt messaging for reinforcement
c) Messge itself shoould highlight the path of the organization
We will describe mission and value statements of four hospitals given below:-

Now let us look at the mission and value statement of a religious organization: Organization - Lifeway Mission Statement:- LifeWay Christian Resources exists to assist churches and believers to evangelize the world to Christ, develop believers, and grow churches by being the best provider of relevant, high quality, high value Christian products and services. Value Statement:- 1. Trustworthy We believe the Bible is the eternal, inerrant Word of God, and is the plumb line for all of our resources, and for everything we say and do. (2 Timothy 3:16-17) 2. Collaborative We seek to work with churches and believers in Christ to discover the best biblical solutions for life. The employees of LifeWay will work together as one to fulfill this purpose. (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10) 3. Innovative The Bible is unchanging, but church practices and the needs of Christians will change over the years. We will seek to meet the changing needs through wise risk taking, innovation, and excellence. (I Corinthians 9:22-23) 4. Comprehensive We seek to provide a wide array of resources to meet the needs of churches and Christians. (Luke 12:48b) 5. Transformational We seek to provide the best resources to be a part of the process of spiritually transforming believers and churches. (2 Cor. 3:18) In this example, it can be clearly seen that the statements are designed to forwarrd Christ's teachings and mission and is put very loudly. From these examples, we can infer that mission and value statements are designed to cater to their core recipients, the listeners of the message. In the case of four hospitals, the motive of prfit earning was not reflected as customers (patients) are concerned about the treatment, care and experience they receive. In case of a Religious organizations, the followers need to be remined about the beliefs and thus such overt messaging is utilized. So, mission and value statements should be designed keeping in mind:- a) The recipient b) Subtle/Overt messaging for reinforcement

Now let us look at the mission and value statement of a religious organization: Organization - Lifeway Mission Statement:- LifeWay Christian Resources exists to assist churches and believers to evangelize the world to Christ, develop believers, and grow churches by being the best provider of relevant, high quality, high value Christian products and services. Value Statement:- 1. Trustworthy We believe the Bible is the eternal, inerrant Word of God, and is the plumb line for all of our resources, and for everything we say and do. (2 Timothy 3:16-17)
  • 8. 2. Collaborative We seek to work with churches and believers in Christ to discover the best biblical solutions for life. The employees of LifeWay will work together as one to fulfill this purpose. (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10) 3. Innovative The Bible is unchanging, but church practices and the needs of Christians will change over the years. We will seek to meet the changing needs through wise risk taking, innovation, and excellence. (I Corinthians 9:22-23) 4. Comprehensive We seek to provide a wide array of resources to meet the needs of churches and Christians. (Luke 12:48b) 5. Transformational We seek to provide the best resources to be a part of the process of spiritually transforming believers and churches. (2 Cor. 3:18) In this example, it can be clearly seen that the statements are designed to forwarrd Christ's teachings and mission and is put very loudly. From these examples, we can infer that mission and value statements are designed to cater to their core recipients, the listeners of the message. In the case of four hospitals, the motive of prfit earning was not reflected as customers (patients) are concerned about the treatment, care and experience they receive. In case of a Religious organizations, the followers need to be remined about the beliefs and thus such overt messaging is utilized. So, mission and value statements should be designed keeping in mind:- a) The recipient b) Subtle/Overt messaging for reinforcement c) Messge itself shoould highlight the path of the organization
