The evidence based self-assessment process and validation exercise has been
a tremendous learning opportunity for Covenant Health and has similarities to
the Accreditation process. It touches all areas of the organization such as
clinical operations, governance, corporate social responsibility, stewardship of
human and financial resources, legal and risk assessment, diversity, and just
culture and disclosure. In 2022, 136 companies were designated as one of the
World’s Most Ethical Companies. Covenant Health was the only healthcare
provider in Canada and one of only five Canadian companies to be honoured.

CSR Policy
Any contribution of Covenant Health funds or asset for the benefit of a charity
or charitable event requires the prior approval of the Covenant Health
President and CEO. Company assets include property such as materials,
facilities, furniture and equipment, supplies, telephone and mail systems
(including voice and email systems), or anything else of value. Requests for
monetary charitable contributions from Covenant Health should be referred to
the CEO or the Covenant Health Public Relations department for follow-up.

4. Covenant Health managers and supervisors have a responsibility for ensuring
high ethical standards and actions by Covenant employees and associates. We
expect our managers and supervisors to exercise responsibilities in a manner
that is respectful of others. Under no circumstances will we sacrifice ethical
and lawful behavior in the pursuit of business objectives. Management
employees are expected to support implementation of the Code of Conduct.
Examples of actions that demonstrate support include: • assuring that all
current and new employees under your supervision are trained in the
application of the Code; • demonstrating in your actions and words the
importance of continuing commitment to the Code and holding others
accountable for living the values and behaviors that support the Code; and •
creating a workplace environment which encourages open communication and
sharing of ideas and where ethical concerns can be raised and openly
discussed without fear of retaliation.
CSR Reporting System
Covenant Health’s Board of Directors is strongly committed to compliance with
ethical and legal principles applicable to health system operations and is
actively involved in oversight of the Covenant Health Integrity Compliance
program. The Board is routinely informed about how Covenant Health
addresses compliance issues, and the Board is guided by the Code of Conduct
in carrying out its governance obligations.
Community boards are a key part of Covenant Health's structure. These
groups represent our Board of Directors in their communities, and ensure
there is effective communication between the local communities and the
provincial organization.

Covenant Health offers a range of ethics services to patients, residents, family
members, physicians, clinical staff, administrators and students. The Ethics &
Discernment Centre supports families and care teams with several clinical
ethics services that include education, policy information, clinician 'coaching'
and formal clinical ethics consultation.
The Centre also facilitates organizational ethics consultation and mission
discernment for clinical and administrative managers and corporate leaders.
We help individuals or teams work through difficult situations step-by-step,
using a clear and reasoned process.
This can be done via phone, in-person, or during a formal meeting.
We hold debriefing sessions with care teams to assess and learn from difficult
care scenarios.
We can attend your team meeting and provide customized education based
on your team’s learning needs and interests.
The Covenant Health Ethics & Discernment Centre consists of three full time
staff and dozens of supporters in the form of ethics committee members,
representatives, associates and 'champions' for ethics in all Covenant Health
sites across the province.
The vision for the Ethics & Discernment Centre arose out of a passion to
ensure that our clinical and administrative colleagues were empowered to face
the ever increasingly complex challenges of the health care world and to
support them as they seek to honour the dignity of their patients and residents
by serving with compassion and understanding

internationally recognized clinical and research institute focused on medical
reconstructive sciences.
Palliative Institute
he Palliative Institute is committed to alleviating suffering for patients and
their families by supporting excellence in palliative and end-of-life care.
Research Centre
The Covenant Health Research Centre (CHRC) is dedicated to promoting
innovation, facilitating inquiry, developing partnerships, and integrating
research into practice in alignment with Covenant Health’s Mission, Vision,
Values and strategic directions.
Northern Alberta Vascular Centre (NAVC)
The physicians and staff of the Northern Alberta Vascular Centre (NAVC) are
dedicated to providing care for those in need across northern Alberta and our
neighbours. The Northern Alberta Vascular Centre located at the Grey Nuns
Hospital provides all inpatient and outpatient vascular care to a population of
2.3 million in Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and the Territories. The
program attracts top surgical specialists in the field and performs about 2,300
procedures a year.
Ethics & Discernment Centre
Our commitment to ethical integrity is more than a code of conduct. It is our
promise to make decisions and set standards of behaviour that support those
we serve. The Ethics Centre supports health care decision makers when there
is conflict or uncertainty about the “best” thing to do. This includes supporting
staff as well as patients, residents, families and loved ones.
