Nomadic Theatre and Going Paperless in the Age of Climate Chaos
1. IamJustinFarrow
Hello! We’re going to talk a bit about
A unique internship with a nomadic theatre
group travelling by boat to areas most
threatened by climate change to deliver a
message from the future about the future of
humanity. For this project, I helped the
company go paperless while tapping into hidden
values which can be achieved by becoming
more sustainable.

A travelling Tale of a Drowned Planet
performed by Caravan Stage Company
atop of Amara Zee, a 100’ wooden ship.
Story involves Monarch Butterflies
refugee migrations and threat of climate
change due to fossil fuel consumption

Development
The most important aspect of Nomadic Tempest is
the messaging embedded throughout the
performance. Climate Change and associated
migrations of animals and insects is the product of
human action.

✘ Performances Cancelled due to “Climate Change Weather”
✘ Biodigester donated by Solar Cities did not fit (scaling at later date)
✘ Delays in Arrivals and Departures due to weather

Attempt to measure the effectiveness of the
Climate Change Messaging in Nomadic Tempest
towards inspiring behavioral change
20. Communication Lifecycle Before Project

Problem: No way to measure engagement
21. An Experiment in Measuring Audience Perceptions
Receive Feedback After
Show
Audience Members submit
feedback answering questions
related to previously held
beliefs, feelings about show
and commitment to altered
behavior
Measure and Quantify
Feedback
Analyze quantified feedback in
order to attempt to recognize
patterns of perception post-
performance. View
communication lifecycle as a
system in which changes to
system can be tracked
Butterfly Effect in Action
Small changes in initial
conditions can produce
large effects elsewhere in
the system. Extending
lifecycle by providing way
to submit feedback and
share the performance

Arrival of

Solved: Feedback component extends lifecycle of message
26. Feedback May Not Represent Entire
Audience due to Number of
Responders
Although I reached my goal for obtaining
over 100 responses, I had no way to
anticipate attendance numbers. My
survey sample captured roughly 3% of
audience.
Reason for Making Goal Two Report Separate
Complexity of Analysis Beyond Scope
of this version of the Project
Philosophically, the analysis of this
feedback is quite complex and although
the survey yielded numbers less than
what is needed for science the proces
could be duplicated in further projects

30. Plans to Incorporate Biodigestor
● Coming Soon (wasn’t scalable during this tour
● Plans to install Biodigester on Amara Zee
● Plastic Recycling Processor/Manufacturer: Customer
31. Key Findings and Conclusions
Love Not Loss
When expressing messages of
sustainability, those not yet
converted respond better to
hope over loss
Feedback is Necessary
Every message of sustainability
should have a feedback
mechanism for harnessing
reactions from audience
Messaging Requires Follow-
Up
Following up on reactions to
your message is a terrific way
to remind an audience of why
the message is important
Converted Appreciate It
Those already on board with a
message show true
appreciation for efforts to
amplify its reach
Complex Topics Difficult to
Convey
Topics like climate change seem
chaotic to those unfamiliar with the
science. Can be difficult to convey
in simple terms
Effective Messages are
Sharable
Extending the end life of a
message by providing means of
sharing and feedback can
amplify the awareness and
action

Editor's Notes
I am Justin Farrow and this is a story of how I followed the Caravan Stage Company and their production of
Nomadic Tempest for the last 6 months. I’ve worked with many terrific organizations while working on this
project. There are rough seas ahead so please hold on and save your questions until the end. Here are a few of
the concepts that we will talk about. The presentation will flow through 3 parts:
Climactic (ie Company/Performance ) Climatic (Climate Strange) Sustainability Messaging (Butterfly Effect)
Back in 1970 Caravan Stage began as a traveling theatre, where they moved from town to town on horseback, performing original stories for audiences.
Here is a brief introduction to Nomadic Tempest
My initial goal for this project was to acquire feedback from at least 100 audience members, which you can see we accomplished.
