CONVENER’S DESK
It turns out to be a great moment for me as I launch Souvenir, NEEM 2015. It
has been a proud moment for us watching young energy minds and
conservationists showcase their talent and bring new ideas into action. The 3
day techno-environment fest turned out to be a huge success with a large
number of participants across the country.
I congratulate the winners for their performance and the team of professors
and students who gave their precious time in preparation and organisation of
NEEM.

It has been a matter of great pleasure being the Convenor of this techno
environment fest NEEM 2015, ISM Dhanbad. It was an amazing experience seeing
the glitter in the eyes of the student who were ready to use their creativity and
organisational skills at the conclusion of the fest.
The success of the event does not go to the participants and organising team
alone, but also to the sponsors who were kind enough to provide assistance and
help organise the event successfully. I also thank the staff members of ISM and
other faculty members who cooperated the students in this organisation. I thank my
colleagues in the organising team who so wonderfully executed all the
functionalities of their respective team.

CASE STUDY ON MUNICIPAL SOLID WASTE
MANAGEMENT
Problem: As you must be aware that Municipal Solid Waste Management is real concern for our
nation. Out of the total MSW being generated 70 % is being collected and only 12.45 % is being
processed or treated. Most of the MSW generated in India is directly dumped in the low lying areas,
valleys, streams outside the city or town. As a result of this it creates water pollution, wastes a large
amount of valuable land resources, produces harmful greenhouse gases and many more problems.
Thus understanding the nature of problem a nationwide campaign of Swatch Bharat mission has
been launched. A municipality X decides for implementation of integrated solid waste management
programme. The municipality has around 20000 houses.
The Municipality ward is a part of the Class-II city and have considerable funds for MSW
management. The area of the ward
is around 20sq. km. grown
sporadically over last twenty years.
Plan an Integrated Solid Waste
Management system for the
township. The plan should be such
that it can be continued for at least
next 20-25 years. Please check the
Suitability of technology in Indian
context and economic feasibility
for the above population.
Give a complete stage wise
implementation plan with a time
line for execution. Justify your conclusions with strong evidences and proper data references. No
data should be without reference and date.
Present your case study in 10 slides maximum excluding references. Submit an abstract of 100
words for your proposal.

6. CASE STUDY - 2
ACID MINE DRAINAGE: AN OVERVIEW OF INDIAN
MINING INDUSTRY
Problem: In mining areas, the primary cause of increased sulphate concentration in water is Acid
Mine Drainage (AMD) which causes environmental pollution that affects many countries having
historic or current mining industries. Preventing the formation or the migration of sulphate from its
source is generally considered to be the preferable option, although this is not feasible in many
locations, and in such cases, it is necessary to collect, treat, and discharge mine water.
Participants had to study the case of Acid mine drainage. Participants are required to produce a case
study on the pollution status and treatment aspect for removal of sulphate , comparison of strength
and weakness of each and the feasibility of process. Choose any one state (Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh,
Rajasthan , Goa or state where mining is done) The Case study must include the health status of
water bodies and the other factor responsible for same , Government’s policies and action plan,
treatment facilities and future prospects.

The event saw huge success with the participants from different colleges. Students from ISM actively
participated in online as well as off line events. We received the abstracts for Case Study and Paper
Presentation through our website which was reviewed by competent authority. Winners were awarded on
the closing day.
Our half yearly magazine éco-sens was also released on the closing day. The magazine received great
appreciations from faculty members as well as other people.
