DESCRIPTION:
The project is made up of a mini drill attached
to a wooden handle that can move up and down
perpendicular to the base to make drilling faster and
more accurate.
PROBLEM DESCRIPTION:
An electronics class of 25 trainees per batch to
finish 5 project individually. In each project, a trainee
breaks 3 drill bits (Php 10.00 per bit sizes of 0.6 mm-
1.0 mm). I always asked them, How come they always
broken the bits. Why this still happens, even though I
already demonstrated the proper way of doing the
drilling. In drilling, ideally the bit is perpendicular to the
surface area. But when I observed the trainees/learner
most of them still, do not follow the proper alignment
and way of the drilling. I know it was my duty to teach
them, but not all of the time I have luxury of time to
observe them. That’s why I decided to create
something, a holder at first. A drill jig holder, the
training center was implementing competency based
training, where a group composed of 5 members and
each member of the group takes turns in using a hand
drill (one hand drill per group and it takes about 30
minutes for each trainee to finish a project without
breaking the bit. But if the bit breaks another 5 minutes
will be added.
“Innovation is nothing more than taking an
already existing idea and making it better. “
While in the process, the hand drill (estimated
amount Php. 750.00) may fall off the working table
causing it to be damaged (20%) in a year. This causes
downtime as the trainer has to fix the damaged drill and
to the extent that need to be replaced. Buying new unit
is very costly for every year or every batches. Procuring
new unit was also not an easy task and the process
takes time.
Imperfect workmanship/longer learning curve of
trainees may be developed by using the unit, the faster
the drilling activity the faster the project to be tested and
submitted the more repetition of the skills equals
mastery.
RESULTS:
This improvised Drill Jig is a knock-down,
movable firm stable cheap functional for electronics
designing and prototyping. The number drill bit
breakage of a student per project was minimized.
Quality of work was achieved by the Learners
(perpendicularity obtained) and amazingly improved
from 30 minutes of drilling it becomes 10 minutes. The
breaking of drill bits was also reduced from 30% to 5%
per annum. Easy to replace dull drill bit that gives no
downtime from trainer in repairing damaged drill.
WAY FORWARD:
I was considering that the drill jig will be
part of the project of the trainees. They are free
to innovate and improve the jig and the unit can
be taken home for application to wage
employment home use as they become
entrepreneur after training.
DRIVERS TO INNOVATION:
The trainer discovered that there was a
damaged heavy duty dill jig lying in the
Regional Training Center-Mariveles building. A
quick diagnosis and some time, he was able to
render the drill functional again. As much as he
wanted to render it applicable to electronics. It
could be very tedious and impractical it being
dependent on several adjustments and needed
adapters finer and more precise drilling
requirements. And if ever there is only one unit
and such could create further queuing. Thus
the idea of having a smaller and numerous
smaller jigs to address the queuing challenge.
