The Last Supper And Tintoretto Comparison
Leonardo da Vinci's, Last Supper and Tintoretto's, The Last Supper these paintings differ in media, layout,
and the way the last supper is portrayed. Roughly a hundred years apart and two separate periods of time,
Leonardo da Vinci's painting was rendered in during the High Renaissance style, while Tintoretto's painting
was created during Mannerism. Da Vinci's Last Supper was made out completely different media than
Tintoretto's The Last Supper. Leonardo da Vinci usually paints the fresco style with oil and tempera paints
but with Last Supper he used an experimental technique for this mural. Instead of painting on a wood panel
or a canvas, he worked directly on plaster or intonaco hoping to become versatile and free. With short

Jacob Lawrence The Thieves Analysis
The work of art, I choose to research is "The Builders" by Jacob Lawrence which was created in 1947. The
medium of the artwork is tempera on a board. The dimension of the tempera is 20 x 24 inches (50.8 x 61 cm).
Jacob Lawrence mom wanted him to become a postman, but when he was 17 years old he drops out of high
school to start his artistic career. Jacob Lawrence created compelling African American stories with bold
colors combining social realism and modern abstraction and with this he achieved early success in his career.
Lawrence spends his early years with the enthusiasm to learn about art history, he would even eventually
walk from his home to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Lawrence spends a lot of time in the library

Not only was it black people and white working together but it also shows that no matter what the color
everyone can work in an equal environment. Most of these pieces were created on the theme of builders, but
it was not just construction but more of a communal type of symbolism where everyone is coming together,
and everyone is part of this journey as one unit creating something to achieve in one's advancements.
Lawrence treats this compositional boarder them with lots of vigor. What makes this work of art stand out is
the way it is shaped and positioned the way the men are standing, and expressions show us how hard and
determined these men are of working because this is their only salvation and intent to see it through to the
end. Lawrence was influenced by his fellow brethren in coming up with most of his piece of work, but where
his big influence came about was when the "Migration of the negro" came about so for about half century he
devised a series of paintings where they were themed of builders in which the white house painting is one of
his earliest work. In a historical sense, it fits perfectly not only was it apart a time when blacks were treated
unfairly, so Lawrence's paintings exploited those flaws there it shows that blacks may work alongside
anyone. This piece is very reflecting in the matter that blacks felt that this was their only salvation in work
and just wanted to be accepted in society and be treated equally. The artist tried to show us his intent at
equality and show us that the black community was anyone's equal in every

Summary Of Jacob Lawrence's Frederick Douglass
Image 4
Jacob Lawrence's Frederick Douglass series number 13 is a portrait of Frederick Douglass in his early days
of being a slave. This portrait the pics three slaves being led in chains while white people stare at them. One
of the slaves is a young Frederick Douglass who was born into slavery. Jacob Lawrence painted this portrait
exactly 100 years after Frederick Douglass successfully escaped slavery. Jacob Lawrence did not fictionalize
his painting, because he showed the slaves without shoes, shirts, or hats. The slave masters have their guns
right underneath their arms, and they are ready to shoot the slaves at any time. The aesthetic value of this
portrait is historical. Anyone who sees this portrait will learn something about American history.
Subject matter
The main subject in this portrait are the slaves that are in chains. The facial expressions of the slaves are
subdued and defeated. The only lookers of the slaves have very nice clothes and the slaves are in rags. This
portrait takes place in an outdoor setting and the slaves appear to be walking through a field in order to be
sold. One of the onlookers are laughing and another one of the onlookers is clutching a baby in her arms.

Casein is a milk based paint and tempera is an egg based paint. tempera is another common medium. Before
oil painting became popular, most painting was done with tempera paints. Rather than oil, the pigments are
held together with a sticky material, most commonly egg yolk. Egg yolk holds the pigments together, but it
dries very fast and can sometimes give the paint a slightly yellow color. Nevertheless, it was a very common
way to make paint before oils came around and is still used by many artists who enjoy working with fast–
drying paints to create certain effects. Tempera is often used to paint wood, another common medium before

Renaissance Paper
Throughout history, changes have occurred to better suit society. Perhaps the greatest change during the
Renaissance period was art because the Renaissance was a time of rebirth and a time of new ideas. The
Renaissance took place in Europe around the 1400's after the dark ages. During this period, people
experienced stability and slowly expanded their wealth. Many wealthy people had enough money to enjoy
the luxuries of drawings. Having the rich pay artists allowed painters to have more freedom in creating
paintings for they could experiment with different kinds of expensive paints because their expenses were
covered. Artists such as Leonardo Da Vinci and Michelangelo arose ... Show more content on

During the dark ages, thousands of Europeans fell ill of the black plague. This awoke the artists of the
Renaissance period to value and appreciate the individuality of humans. Raphael used the newfound
knowledge of human anatomy to capture the splendor of the human body he used pyramidal composition
(Britannica 1). Pyramidal composition was the main method of painting individual beings. To do so, artists
would have the form the subject's body in an upright triangle shape and slowly paint the body in a way to
make the bottom of the body such as the shoulders expand beneath to form a wide base. Human eyes
naturally tend to like objects that are symmetrical, thus the triangle shape the artists draw to form the
physique are pleasing to the view (Essential Humanities 1). Raphael's paintings of the humans were more
energetic compared to his teachers. His drawing style were placid. Other than Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci
also used pyramidal composition. Mona Lisa, a famous Renaissance painting showed a woman in the front
with nature in the background. The woman's symmetrical face held a small smile and her head was centered
on her body, which was slightly turned to the right. Mona Lisa's hands were by her side with her elbows
pultruding out making a triangle shape. Having a person as the focus of art was the sole purpose of
humanism. Therefore, the style of humanism brought out new distinct features as well as the beauty and

Michelangelo Buonarroti Simoni Research Paper
Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni I, Michelangelo Buonarroti, was born on March 6, 1475 in
Caprese, Tuscany, which is the Republic of Florence, to Francesca di Neri del Miniato di Siena and Ludovico
di Leonardo di Buonarroti Simoni. I passed on February 18, 1564 in Rome, Papal States. My story takes
place in what is now Italy. My father did not want me to go into an art apprenticeship. He considered artistic
activity as menial, and hence demeaning to the family's social status. My father thought it be best if I just
followed in the footsteps of the families men before me and become a small–scale banker. I was so
determined to become an artist, because it was my passion. I never gave up, because banking was not

I was trying to capture the individual's beauty. I started painting with fresco paintings, there are other types of
paintings such as tempera painting. Fresco painting is when a pigment is mixed with water and directly
painted onto the wall. It was commonly used for painting murals on walls. Tempera painting was when the
pigments were mixed with egg yolk to form a binder. Tempera paintings were commonly used on woods. I
used many people and objects for my subjects. I used the Medici family quite often because they took me in
and I learned humanistic culture and neoplatonic philosophy from their inner intellectual circle. Also, my
subjects were based on whether I was contracted to do a job. I was contracted to work on Pope Julius' tomb
for awhile until he told me not to pursue it any further because of the war that was happening there was no
money for it. Then he contracted me to paint the Sistine Chapel's ceiling instead. I never felt that painting
was my strong suit, but while painting the ceiling I incorporated sculptures into the ceiling. Many renaissance
artists based their art on similar subjects. Many artists like myself were just trying to capture the individual
beauty and mystery of the natural world. Artists did this so people could seem more human and realistic. In
my later years I continued sculpting and painting and focused more on my architecture. According to

Broederlam's Triptych Of The Virgin
The Dijon Altarpiece painted by Broederlam was commissioned by Phillip the bold intended for the
Chartreuse de Champmol the Carthusian monastery near Dijon. Bout's Triptych of the Virgin are similar to
Rogier Van der Weyden's composition. As altarpieces they are intended as prayer aids the Dijon Altarpiece
specifically for the Carthusian monks. The subject matter of both pieces are almost identical. They both start
with an annunciation scene, a visitation scene, and then the last two scenes differ on each painting.
Broederlam's last two scenes are the presentation of Jesus and the flight to Egypt and Bout's are the nativity
and the adoration of the Magi. The paintings use the same biblical stories with almost identical poses in the
annunciation, Mary on the left with a book just noticing Gabriel approaching her in the room. The visitation

Dorothy and the engraving of Master E.S. Large Virgin of Einsiedeln made it possible for all people of
different status to own art. It wasn't just for the wealthy anymore. Images were popular because the masses
were mostly illiterate. woodcuts were carved on blocks of wood to produce an image. Artists had to think in
reverse and in a subtractive method. when printed the carved areas stayed white and the raised areas took the
ink. images produced in this method tended to be flat and one dimensional. Simple and heavy lines were
probably the easiest to carve and ornamental patterns were common. The engraving process is similar but
with finer tools like a burin to get smaller details, Master E. S. made use of crosshatching to create shading

print since it was the most expensive of the set for the church. All prints were made for the masses but

Compare and Contrast Duccio, Madonna and Child – Gauguin, La Orana Maria Madonna and Child is a
panel painting by Italian medieval artist Duccio di Buoninsegna. Painted in tempera and gilded on a wood
panel in around the year 1300, the Madonna and Child is still in its original engaged frame. The fact that it
was in private hands and out of public circulation for years might be why the painting is basically intact after
700 years. The craftsmanship and preservation are simply amazing. The damaged lower edge of the frame is
charred where devotional candles may have tipped over. The Madonna and Child is presently part of a

Soon after his death his work became more valuable. Gauguin paintings rarely go up for sale but their price
could go as high as $39 million. In The Orana Maria, Gauguin was depicting Tahitian life and he used an
intense tropical color palette of reds and purples. Duccio's Madonna and Child used the Byzantine mosaic
style color scheme of rich blue, red and gold backgrounds. The Duccio and the Gauguin were both signed by
the artist in the lower right hand corner of the painting. The title of la Orana Maria is actually painted in the
lower right hand corner of the painting in a bright orange box. In the Orana Maria you can see the texture of
the oil paint on the canvas from the brush that was used. The Madonna with Child is a panel painting. "A
carpenter would construct a solid wood piece the size of the panel needed. It would be planed and sanded and
if needed, joined with other pieces to obtain the desired size and shape. The wood would be coated with a
mixture of animal–skin glues and resin and covered with linen (the mixture and linen combination was
known as a "size"); this might be done by a specialist, or in the artists' studio. Once the size had dried, layer
upon layer of gesso would be applied, each layer sanded down before the next applied, sometimes as many as
15 layers, before a smooth hard surface emerged, not unlike ivory." However impeccably preserved you can
still see the cracks and aging of the paint used in

The Turin Shroud Speech
(–– removed HTML ––) Perhaps one of the most famous religious relics in the world is the Turin Shroud.
Measuring at thirteen–and–a–half feet long by four–and–a–half feet wide, the shroud depicts the image of a
bearded man, said to be Jesus Christ. According to the legends, it was used to wrap the body of Christ after
crucifixion by Joseph of Arimathea. The first appearance of the shroud in documented history came in 1357,
in the little village of Lirey, France. It was then taken to Chambéry in 1457, where it was there in 1532 that
the shroud was almost destroyed in a ferocious fire. The event left charred marks on the corner of the folds in
the fabric, and in 1578 it was taken to Turin where it has since remained. The Catholic Church is thoroughly
convinced that the shroud possesses a genuine physical record of Christ's body, and the cloth is rarely shown
to the public. (–– removed HTML ––) (–– removed HTML ––) Although, organized religion has not always
been so accepting. Documents written by the Bishop of Troyes and Pope Clement VII from 1389 have been
uncovered which note that the Bishop asked the Pontiff to publicly declare that the shroud was merely a
painting. He stated that the image had actually been painted by an artists, but the priests in Lirey had started
tricking the public into believed it was Christ's authentic death shroud. The Pop bowed to the Bishop's
wishes, and declared that the shroud could keep being shown to the public, but each time it was, the local
priest was forced to announce to the public that the relic only depicted a painted copy of Christ's real shroud.
(–– removed HTML ––) (–– removed HTML ––) Over the course of time such practices dwindled away, and
the authenticity of the shroud was assumed. The earliest days of the age of science seemed to confirm this
belief. During 1898, photographic experts revealed the image was a negative picture, and when seen in
reverse tones, the outline showed a much more detailed view of the body. In subsequent years, Dr. Paul
Vignon constructed a theory that such a phenomenon was caused by ammonia emanating from Christ's dead
body after his death. Vignon strongly believed the resulting image was beyond the ability of any forger, and

His downy moustache indicates that he was no older than his twenties. I found a Seated Statue of the
monarch Idu II Dendera funny because to look at the statue you have to look through a rectangular hole that
is in the wall. I think that also makes people curious to look, to see what's inside there. I didn't like the
painting "The Man of Sorrows" by Michele Giambono because the man in the painting was bleeding real
badly. It was an image of Saint Francis receiving the stigmata with a figure of Christ as the man of sorrows.
The painting was done using tempera and gold on wood. I liked the painting of Girolamo dai Libri called
"Madona and Child with Saints" because it was a very peaceful environment. Tempera and oil on canvas was
used in the painting. The drawing "A Hunting Scene" is a very interesting painting but I didn't like it because
too much violence was involved. The whole drawing is base on killing. Tempera and oil transferred to
masonite were used. The drawing "Hercules and Achelous" is very interesting because Hercules is fighting
Achelous who transformed himself into a bull in order to fight Hercules for the favors of Deianeira. In the
struggle, one of his horn snapped off and Nymphs filled it with flowers and fruits creating the Cornucopia,
Horn of Plenty. In conclusion, I will talk about the most interesting place in the entire museum for me, The
Temple of Dendur. It's amazing how beautiful this place is. At the entrance, you encounter

As I look at the painting of The Adoration of The Shepherds, two artists, Andrea Mantegna and El Greco,
showed it different ways with same subjects. First, the title of the paintings is about Jesus's birth. Andrea
mantegna artist had lived from ca 1430 to 1506. He established his reputation when he was 20 years old. This
painting is the evident of his highly individual style. He worked it during ca 1451 to 1453. He painted it in
horizontal format with 153/4x217/8(40x55.6). He used tempera on a canvas that transferred from a wood. In
difference, El Greco(Spain 141–1641) worked it with oil color on canvas by vertical format. The size is 125

The angel figures in El Greco's are as humans that they are looking something like a name list. Holy Maria is
in the each of the paintings, but the Maria in El Greco's painting is just looking at the baby. But Maria is
praying to God in Mantegna's painting.
I see differences between the two pictures about painting styles. In Mantegna, it is painted sensitively in
every figures that all of clothes wrinkles are showed. This painting is a detailed realistic work. Also, the
mountain and the land have many lines to show realism. However, Greco's painting is worked as tone by
colors. It feels smooth, but is heavy surrounding. It is used by oil colors, so it is painted smoothly. It is
worked very well. However, the Mantegna's painting is showed very brightly with tempera colors. The
brushes are stroked strongly, but it is also worked well. The settle of the Greco's painting is in inside;
however, Mantegna's painting has the landscape in outside. This painting seems that the time is arternoon.
Greoc's painting is focused to angels who are placed on top. However, Mantegna's painting is focused to
Holy Maria who is placed in middle side.
Each artist showed their own styles, so I can see the different styles of the paintings. Although it feels
differently, the both of the paintings are successful work that used nice colors at that time. However, I like
Greco's work because the

Playground By Paul Cadmus

the foreground. The pants that he is wearing are unbuttoned and slightly below his waist. The boy's arms are
positioned behind him bending back with his hands underneath his undergarments. He stares back at the
viewer with a blank look on his face. Scattered on the ground, trash and crumpled pieces of newspaper can

Art Analysis: The Last Supper By Leonardo Da Vinci
Research Paper "The Last Supper" is one of the most famed paintings in the history of art. Leonardo Da
Vinci, the painter, depicted an excerpt from John 13:21 in the bible of the last supper Jesus would have with
his twelve disciples before he would be betrayed by one of them. This mural was, and currently is displayed
at a refectory in the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. The Last Supper has a unique medium as the method
of painting was not fresco, which would have been commonly used for mural paintings at the time. Instead,
the painting was made through tempera on gesso, pitch, and mastic on the brick wall of the refectory.

It stands on that very same brick wall to this day several feet above the ground, just right under the ceiling. It
was painted with a single point perspective inside a room with windows illuminating the beautiful
mountainous landscape. That vanishing point happens to lead directly towards Jesus' head as the centerpiece
of the artwork alongside all the apostles facing the same direction on one side of the table. The painting itself
shows the emotions of each of the apostles when they were told that one of them would betray Jesus. So you
can see much shock, anger, and confusion amongst the group with Jesus being centered and separated from
the congested group of apostles. The three apostles on the left are only showing emotions of shock and
confusion. Next to them, apostle Peter, Christ's protector, looks angered by this news and is even seen
holding a knife point the other direction of Jesus. It's almost as if Peter is rushing in and asking, "Who is the
betrayer?" ready to do what needs to be done. Meanwhile, apostle John is the only one sitting without
emotion or any reaction to this. Sitting right in front of them is apostle Judas who is the actual betrayer of the
Jesus. Judas is withdrawn and seems to be hiding under Peter's shadow based on the sudden realization that
Jesus knew he would be betrayed. In his hands is a small bag possibly indicating his payment of shekels to
betray Jesus while he simultaneously spills the table salt. This spilling of salt has become a popularized omen
of evil because of Judas' betrayal. Finally, Jesus is centered with open arms reaching for the same bowl of
Judas. Matthew 26: 23 states, "Jesus replied, 'The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will
betray me.'" Reacting to this is apostles Thomas and James as Judas unknowingly reaching for the same bowl
who are shocked at this outcome. Meanwhile, apostle Philip leans towards Jesus

The Last Supper By Ugolino Di Nerio And Leonardo Da Vinci
Reaction Essay "Last Supper" The Purpose of the paintings of the "Last Supper," by Ugolino di Nerio and
Leonardo da Vinci, were to portray the betrayal of Jesus Christ by of one the twelve apostles, as they are
having the last meal. Jesus Christ mentions to his apostles that there is going to be a betrayal amongst them.
All twelve apostles had mixed feelings of anger, fear, and surprised. Later on, it turns out that Judas, one of
the twelve apostles, had told the authorities about Jesus so he can be arrested then later crucified. The
paintings show a dramatic scene after the claim by Jesus Christ. The paintings give us insight to get the
reader interested in the painting of "The Last Supper," how the cultures that produced those paintings change
the way we paint today, and how both paintings influenced the Renaissance era. First of all, The painting of
"The Last Supper "by Ugolino di Nerio, shows the twelve apostles sitting across from and besides Jesus
Christ, the painting looks very crowded, as the ceiling and the walls are very close, with extreme proximity
between Jesus and the apostles. The painting by Nerio is shown as if the scene was enacted in a closed room
with no windows and no sunlight, Also, the heads on some of the apostles, look like it is twisted to the other
side of their bodies, there is no gap to show a smooth head turn to the right or to the left. Nerio's painting

The Development of Many Colors Essay
As far back as the stone age men have looked for ways to share their lives and beliefs through art. Primitive
drawings have been found in caves in Europe, Asia and Africa. The only thing missing was color to make the
drawings more lifelike. By experimenting with plants, berries and minerals, men have developed beautiful
colors that have been improved until we have the tempera, oils, acrylic and watercolor that artists use today.
Tempera is the oldest paint medium known to man. Powered minerals, plants or clay were used for pigment
and egg yolks were used as a binder. Sometimes, artists mixed the tempera with plaster to make frescoes on
walls. Tempera paint is long lasting and does not change color over time like oils. The colors are ... Show

He could not get the effect he wanted with the paint that was available at that time. He began to mix oil with
his colors to thin the paint and slow down the drying time. This allowed him to add more shading and detail
to his paintings(About.comPainting). Today's oil paint is a mixture of pigment(color), a binder which is
usually linseed oil and a thinner which is usually turpentine(Oil Paint History). It was very hard to keep paint
fresh during the early days of art. Before the nineteenth century artist or their assistants were required to mix
fresh batches of paint every day. Then "colormen" began selling ready–made paint in pig bladders. Artists
had to punch a hole in the bladder to get the paint out and they put a tack in the hole to reseal it. In 1822
James Hams, an English artist, invented a glass syringe with a plunger to force the paint out. Finally, in 1841
the American artist John Goffe Rand invented and patented the squeezable tube with a twist cap. Today this
invention is not only used for paint, it is also used for toothpaste, ointment, creams, etc(About.comPainting).

The halo looks to have been carved into the wood and then painted with a little bit of sun gold to heighten its
appearance. The lesser portion of the painting has a dark brown color which might have being painted or

looks very firm. On the left and right of the arch there are blue colors meant to depict the skies filled with
yellow stars. This depiction of the skies is said to be where God the Father resides. In the painting, there are
three life like images that are clearly visible. The first one as illustrated in order of importance is God the

The sculptures and paint show details how society viewed and interpreted women body, sexuality, and
maternity. In addition, revealed that these women were protected from threats around them with ornaments.
Civilizations since early times, believed that we were in permanent threat from forces we do not see or
cannot explain and because of it, we protected ourselves with artificial elements in a form of jewelry, crowns
or caps. This idea has been continue from one generation to the next to the point that in modern societies
some of us still use this type of protection in our bodies (e.g., small cross, divine images, tattoos, etc.).These
pieces of art also indicate that humans believed in gods with superpowers and they are looking over us
constantly. Humanity also believes in dark forces or demons trying to makes us do things that would upset
the good gods. Some of the differences between these sculptures and paint are the material in which each one
of them were created. The first figure, the Woman of Willendorf was carved in limestone, the second piece,
the portrait of Queen Tiye was carved in wood and the last piece, the Virgin and Child Icon was created of
tempera on a wood. You can also notice how the details on their faces and bodies changes throughout the
time and years. The woman of Willendorf figurine offers details of a voluptuous nude women's body but
there is not face, or feet. Queen Tiye statue shows the face of a woman in detail closed to the gods but
without any body parts and lastly The Virgin and Child Icon, is an expression of divinity of the views,
reflections and beliefs from the gospel. Because communities started to innovate on the art of carving and

Humanism In The Renaissance
The word humanism has a lot of meanings, and trying to explain sometimes can create some confusion. But
sometimes, each word means a different type of humanism. In the Middle Ages, art and learning were focus

heaven, the saints, and more interested in thoughts about themselves, their setting and their daily lives. Most
of the transform was influenced by the study of ancient Greek and Roman about scientific matter, art,

Sandro Botticelli And The Birth Of Venus
Visual Analysis of Botticelli's Madonna of the Rose Garden and The Birth of Venus
The works of both Madonna of the Rose Garden and The Birth of Venus were created by the artist Sandro
Botticelli, whose work was seen as an icon of art for the Italian community. His piece, Madonna of the Rose
Garden predates the Birth of Venus by around 15 years. Made in Florence for the Arti and Chamber of
Commerce, this publicly commissioned painting dates around circa 1470, compared to the Birth of Venus
which dates to around 1485. The time difference between the completion of these two works shows the
juvenile age and youthful experience of Botticelli during his creation of Madonna of the Rose Garden. In

The Madonna of the Rose Garden exemplifies the religious iconography from the artists' attention to details
such as the use of color, addition of religious symbols, and attention to the background. Botticelli uses the
color blue and red on the Virgin Mary's garment to show the symbols of healing, love, and life. The cloth is
quite flowy and covers her whole entire body. Both her red dress and blue overcoat are lined with gold,
showing beauty, grace, and holiness. Both the tie around her waist and her veil are white, exemplifying the
symbol of purity. She has a faded golden halo around the top of her head, signifying her holiness and
connection to God. On her lap, she is cradling a young child who is seen as the Child of God. Jesus is draped
in white cloth, showing purity as well. The child's hand is reaching out toward the Virgin Mary's hand to eat a
pomegranate. I am unsure of the symbolic meaning of the pomegranate itself, but I know it is a crucial
symbol in the religious community and this work. Jesus also has a golden halo resting atop his head, showing
a connection to God and a characteristic of holiness and purity. Both figures are looking at one another,
creating what seems to be a close bond by identifying as part of a family. The background of this work shows

optical illusions to try and fool the eye of the viewer. The viewer must focus because the illusion may suggest
one image, but upon closer inspection reveal something completely different. Another thing I talked about in
my presentation is the discovery of perspective. Said to be discovered by architect Filippo Brunelleschi. He
stated that objects shrink in size according to their position and distance from the eye. He was able to
mathematically calculate the scale of objects within a painting in order to make them appear realistic. Many
painters at that time then adopted that formula into their paintings.

Museum of Fine Art, at Auburn University. These ten murals were made to represent the "vision of the
future" in the south during 1939. Depicted in each of the murals are key milestones in the agricultural
development of the state of Alabama; ranging from Alabama's First Farmer to Science on the Farm. These
murals were said to be "A series of bold, nostalgic paintings at the 1939 Alabama State Fair that helped

Edvard Munch Scream
For this purpose of this analysis, I chose to do a piece of artwork that I viewed as very different. The painting
is titled Scream. It was created by an artist named Edvard Munch in the year of 1893. Munch was a
Norwegian artist. This painting has a great significance in Munch's life. This painting was created during the
time of Sigmund Freud. I found this very interesting since Munch himself lived a very tough life himself.
Munch began to express his tormented inner world through his artistic creations, giving birth to an art style
that would later be known as Expressionism (Art Analysis). Expressionism is defined as a form of art in
which visual appearances are distorted to express psychological or emotional states (Getlein, 551). I believe
that Scream may have been the very beginning of this form of art, since Scream evokes such an emotional
response from its viewers.
The most painful event in Edvard Munch's life was the premature death of his mother from tuberculosis
when he was five years old (Art Analysis). Munch new heartache at such a young age. Munch also had an
older sister named Sophie. ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Tempera shares qualities with both watercolor and oil paint (Getlein, 161). Munch probably used tempera
because it could withstand the test of time, maintaining its colors without being darkened by age. Tempera is
defined as a paint in which the vehicle is emulsion, which is a stable mixture of an aqueous liquid with an oil,
fat, wax, or resin (Getlein, 161). The other product Munch used in this painting is casein paint. Casein paints
dry to a matte, brittle film that is insoluble in water and impervious to most paint strippers (Casein Paint).
Munch probably chose to use this medium since if could encase and attach to the tempera paint, providing a
protective covering. The painting was done on cardboard since the casein paint would have been too brittle

Petrus Christus and Raphael from the Age of the Renaissance The 15th century was the beginning of the age

important a new way that people expressed themselves. It was an age of new techniques in painting,

period, two very important people to the artistic world and their works spun out –– Petrus Christus with The

Christus focuses on a lot on the color red, which was the main color in most of paintings done with Christ.
The painting shows the mourning after the crucifixion of Christ. Christ is found dead and bleeding in the
painting with the nails that pinned him to the cross next to his legs. You can see a priest and a nun above him
and two men trying to cover his body with white cloth, which could symbolize purity and after life. The
woman to the left has something in her hand in a form of kettle, which may contain water. This symbolizes
holy water, that by her movement in the picture, is going to be sprinkled onto Christ. Water in the
background symbolizes purity. The priest and the nun are in the painting to show their eternal devotion to
Christ and to show the belief in Christianity.
The Agony in the Garden painted by Raphael was done in a method of using Tempera on wood. Tempera is a
form of painting process where pigments are mixed with yolk and water or oil. Its a fairly quick drying
process and demands immediate application of layers of paint. An artist using tempera has to work just as
fast as the artist that uses fresco techniques. The painting is 9 1/2 x 11 3/8 inches, and was funded by various
donors.

Roman Art Comparison Essay
If one was to describe the Roman art, in my opinion the words realistic, and functional, would give it
judgment; which perhaps would describe rather well the pragmatic Romans. Undoubtedly, both the painting
and sculpture has its own purpose, and a unique place in society; the Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci,
has rather explicit opinion on the topic: "A sculptor says that his art is more worthy than painting because,
fearing humidity, fire, heat, and cold less than painting, it is more eternal. The response to him is that such a
thing does not make the sculptor more dignified because the permanence is born from the material and not
from the artificer. This dignity can also belong to painting by painting with colored glazes on metal or
terracotta..." (Da Vinci, n.a.). According to Leonardo, the sculpture is more eternal; it will last quite long

In tempera the pigments were mixed with an adhesive and laid upon a dry surface. The paintings would be
applied either to the internal or external walls of the buildings, where they would become an internal part of
the structure. The Romans seldom placed any furniture against the walls, nor did they hang any pictures on
the walls, so those paintings served as an elaborate decoration, and part of the architectural design. (Durant,
1972). As one can see, the painting arts were a domain of a skilled "interior decorators", rather than artists in
our sense of understanding; which should give one a clue to the function of art in the Roman society. One
should not omit the fact that it was Romans who invented the landscape painting, and a crude form of a linear
perspective; furthermore, to satisfy the huge demand for painting arts, the roman artists produced panel
paintings, in encaustic and tempera, including their own "triumphal" history painting. (Roman art,

With the influence of mannerism in Renaissance , the composition of the figures intertwine and create not
just complex composition but a dynamic three–dimensional space. Both of the child have its left leg stepping
forward, however, because of the diagonal composition in the Dolci painting and the depth expressed by the
diagonal accent, it enhances the three–dimensional effect. Dolci's composition is also more unified–meaning
the subjects form a dynamic composition relationship. There is more variation of postures in the painting and
their limbs, accessories are more intertwined. The scene seems more like a "happening" than a positioned,
still portrait. Romano's composition of the space seem to be more layer–based and there are less spatial
relationships between the figures. Dolci also introduced a new technique by cropping the image of the
subjects with a slight highlighted line. This new technique is unique in a way that it restraint the subject in
another area than the frame. This enhances the three–dimensional effect evermore, giving the illusion as if
the viewer would peek into the space inside of the painting, instead of looking directly at the image and
associating it with areas outside of the painting such as a frame which naturally limits space and create a
barrier between the viewer and the subjects in painting

Again, Mary is on the right side on the painting. Botticelli is using the biblical motif to foreshadow Christ
being born. Christ is the right hand of God, so even the annunciation of his coming must be holy and divine.
While there is no bible evidence, many believe the angel Gabriel sat at the left hand of God. Rabbi David
Cooper says the angel is "connected with the attribute of Gevorah on the left side of the Tree of Life.
Whereas Michael is on God's right hand, Gabriel is on God's left hand. The left hand is the one that metes out
punishment; the right hand overrules strict justice and is more merciful and thus more lenient" (p. 45).
Botticelli seems to agree with the theory of Gabriel sitting at God's left hand by the placement on the angel.
While the does have a column directly diving the space, the gaps between the columns and the walk way into
the chapel combines the two sections. Botticelli seems to be inferring for the angel to walk into the chapel
and see Mary. The figures are also bowing toward one another. Not only are they bowing because they are in
the house of God, but they seem to acknowledge one another in their bowing. If one would draw a line of the
figures line of vision the lines would intersect at the walk way between the columns. Therefore while Mary
and Gabriel are in different rooms of the church they can see and are interacting with one

Renaissance Art: Primavera By Sandro Botticelli
'Primavera' is an artwork painted by Sandro Botticelli, (Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi Botticelli). Born in
1445, died in 1510, Botticelli grew up during The Renaissance era and was heavily influenced by the styles
of artworks around him. It is debated when this artwork was painted exactly but, it is certain that it was
painted between 1477 – 1482. The artwork is 202 cm in length and 314 cm in width and was not framed.
The Renaissance era created many very popular and beautiful techniques for painting and making artworks.
The three most common techniques of this time would have been, fresco, tempera and oil paintings. Fresco
was very popular among artists as it was easy enough to use and was good quality. Artist would mix
pigments with water and apply them to wet plaster. Once the paint had dried the pigments would have

If you are a businessman, a stock broker, a salesman, or an entrepreneur then you're probably strongly
motivated by money. Many factors motivate an artist to create. It could be emotion, religion, to
commemorate history, or to give us a new perception on things. According to Mark Getlein, he describes
Living with Art as "making art live by letting it engage our attention, our imagination, and our intelligence.
(3)" If I were an artist I would be a painter, and I would paint images to give tangible form to feelings and
ideas. If I were an artist I would try to show what I see and feel. So, I would show how beautiful and ugly
this world could be. I would do this by using a variety of colors. Color has an emotional effect on us. Cool

Numerous times, it is created with feeling and arouses feelings out of us. These pieces of art are good
examples of the role of giving a tangible form to ideas and feelings. These pieces of art may give the
impression of very little taking place in the image but the artwork has a greater meaning behind it. In Jacob
Lawrence piece, it looks so simple but he was telling the story of thousands of African–Americans migrating
from the South to the North (161). In Raphael piece, he captures the ideals of the Renaissance period. If I
was an artist I want to show the ideas of this time. These works are famous around the world and one of the
reasons is because of how people interpret these works. If I were an artist I want to tell a story like Jacob
Lawrence but also bring the beauty of Raphael's Fresco into one

The techniques seen during this period are very important. One being in order to depict the human figure
properly, artists needed to study the anatomy. With the studying of the human body, artists used the technique
of shading to create the volume and a better sense of perspective. During the restoration of St. Catherine of
Alexandria, many parts were left untouched while others were carefully re–painted (Brink, 2001, para. 7); in
my opinion, this says a lot about the quality of work Martini presented. In other words, this painting is
significant because of the stylistic breakthrough of its time, as well as the care and quality of the painting
itselfas well as the materials used. The titling of this period "re–birth" or "Renaissance" hints this time
involved a breakthrough in art history. Through the use of geometry and perspective, chiaroscuro,
contraposto, naturalism, classical themes, and the materials used, I was able to determine the stylistic period
that Simone Martini, St. Catherine of Alexandria, was created during the renaissance period. Further research
helped me determine that this painting was in fact a creation of the Early Italian Renaissance period. Without
the use of these techniques and materials, the significance of this time in art

and art. Studying this type of work has

Interpretation of Giovanni Bellini’s Madonna and Child
Giovanni Bellini, (born c. 1430, Venice [Italy]–died 1516, Venice), Italian painter who, in his work, reflects
the increasing interest of the Venetian artistic milieu in the stylistic innovations and concerns of the
Renaissance (metmuseum). Bellini was one of the most influential Venetian artists. He lived and worked in
Venice all his life; his career spanned 65 years. Little is known about Bellini's family. Bellini's father, Jacopo,
a painter was a pupil of the Gentile da Fabriano, in any case, Jacopo introduced the principles of the
Florentine Renaissance to Venice before either of his sons (Britannica). Jacopo strove to ensure that his sons
would become distinguished painters as well and, it is said, often pitted them each other.
In Bellini's depiction of the Madonna and Child (One of Bellini's mature works), the Madonna, with her face
calm and collective, is tenderly holding the Christ Child on her knee, the Madonna is seated improbably in
front of a velvet curtain set in a landscape with a city and rolling mountains in the distance. "The transition
from a dormant to a verdant nature and a dawn sky is a metaphor for death and rebirth (metmuseum)". The
landscape seems to allude to the theme of death and resurrection: the trees are barren in the foreground and
while the fields follow behind in the background is all green, the effect is somewhat a little over the top with
some of the brownish color in the middle having been faded over the time (metmuseum). The path

How The Renaissance Changed Over The Time
The renaissance to me is a very interesting topic and a very important era. A lot changed during this time
period that caught my attention. My research will be on the renaissance and on 1 artists from that time
period. I will begin by discussing how the renaissance changed over the time and how art was involved. In
addition, I will be discussing about 1 artist and there history, following by the materials and techniques he
use.
The renaissance is also known as the new birth of resurrection. During the 200 years between 1400 and 1600,
Europe had some great reveals of drawings, fine art paintings and architecture mostly in Italy. During this era
there were lots of discoveries. There was a desire to explore the features of nature and the ... Show more

Around the age of 14, da Vinci began a lengthy apprenticeship with an artist named Andrea Del Verrocchio in
Florence. Where he then learned a variety of skills like metal working, leather arts, carpentry, drawing,
painting and sculpting. His earliest known work is a pen and ink drawing of a landscape in the Amo valley.
He later started his own work shop. Using his inventive skills, da Vinci sketched war machines such a war
chariot with blades mounted on the sides, and armored tank propelled by two men cranking a shaft and even
an enormous crossbow that required a small army of men to operate. He believed studying science made him
a better artist.
Leonardo thought the ability to see was mankind's most important sense and most important organ. Da Vinci
began to seriously study anatomy and dissect human and animal bodies. He's drawings of fetus in utero, the
heart and vascular system, sex organs and other bone and muscular structures are some of the first human
records. In addition, to his investigation da Vinci studied botany, geology, zoology, hydraulics, aeronautics
and physics.
He also sketched His observations on loose sheets of papers and pads that he tucked inside his belt. He
placed the papers in his personal notebook and arranged them with four themes, painting, architecture,
mechanics and human anatomy. His filled dozens of notebooks with drawn

Not only was it black people and white working together but it also shows that no matter what the color everyone can work in an equal environment. Most of these pieces were created on the theme of builders, but it was not just construction but more of a communal type of symbolism where everyone is coming together, and everyone is part of this journey as one unit creating something to achieve in one's advancements. Lawrence treats this compositional boarder them with lots of vigor. What makes this work of art stand out is the way it is shaped and positioned the way the men are standing, and expressions show us how hard and determined these men are of working because this is their only salvation and intent to see it through to the end. Lawrence was influenced by his fellow brethren in coming up with most of his piece of work, but where his big influence came about was when the "Migration of the negro" came about so for about half century he devised a series of paintings where they were themed of builders in which the white house painting is one of his earliest work. In a historical sense, it fits perfectly not only was it apart a time when blacks were treated unfairly, so Lawrence's paintings exploited those flaws there it shows that blacks may work alongside anyone. • 4. The Renaissance: The Greatest Change During The Renaissance Lilian Wang Mrs. Parks Global History 3/16/18 Renaissance Paper Throughout history, changes have occurred to better suit society. Perhaps the greatest change during the Renaissance period was art because the Renaissance was a time of rebirth and a time of new ideas. The Renaissance took place in Europe around the 1400's after the dark ages. During this period, people experienced stability and slowly expanded their wealth. Many wealthy people had enough money to enjoy the luxuries of drawings. Having the rich pay artists allowed painters to have more freedom in creating paintings for they could experiment with different kinds of expensive paints because their expenses were covered. This awoke the artists of the Renaissance period to value and appreciate the individuality of humans. Raphael used the newfound knowledge of human anatomy to capture the splendor of the human body he used pyramidal composition (Britannica 1). Pyramidal composition was the main method of painting individual beings. To do so, artists would have the form the subject's body in an upright triangle shape and slowly paint the body in a way to make the bottom of the body such as the shoulders expand beneath to form a wide base. Human eyes naturally tend to like objects that are symmetrical, thus the triangle shape the artists draw to form the physique are pleasing to the view (Essential Humanities 1). Raphael's paintings of the humans were more energetic compared to his teachers. His drawing style were placid. Other than Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci also used pyramidal composition. Mona Lisa, a famous Renaissance painting showed a woman in the front with nature in the background. The woman's symmetrical face held a small smile and her head was centered on her body, which was slightly turned to the right. Mona Lisa's hands were by her side with her elbows pultruding out making a triangle shape. Having a person as the focus of art was the sole purpose of humanism. Michelangelo Buonarroti Simoni Research Paper Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonarroti Simoni I, Michelangelo Buonarroti, was born on March 6, 1475 in Caprese, Tuscany, which is the Republic of Florence, to Francesca di Neri del Miniato di Siena and Ludovico di Leonardo di Buonarroti Simoni. I passed on February 18, 1564 in Rome, Papal States. My story takes place in what is now Italy. My father did not want me to go into an art apprenticeship. He considered artistic activity as menial, and hence demeaning to the family's social status. My father thought it be best if I just followed in the footsteps of the families men before me and become a small–scale banker. I was so determined to become an artist, because it was my passion. I used the Medici family quite often because they took me in and I learned humanistic culture and neoplatonic philosophy from their inner intellectual circle. Also, my subjects were based on whether I was contracted to do a job. I was contracted to work on Pope Julius' tomb for awhile until he told me not to pursue it any further because of the war that was happening there was no money for it. Then he contracted me to paint the Sistine Chapel's ceiling instead. I never felt that painting was my strong suit, but while painting the ceiling I incorporated sculptures into the ceiling. Many renaissance artists based their art on similar subjects. Many artists like myself were just trying to capture the individual beauty and mystery of the natural world. Artists did this so people could seem more human and realistic. In my later years I continued sculpting and painting and focused more on my architecture. According to History.com, "In ... Essay on Art11 Compare and Contrast Essy Compare and Contrast Duccio, Madonna and Child – Gauguin, La Orana Maria Madonna and Child is a panel painting by Italian medieval artist Duccio di Buoninsegna. Painted in tempera and gilded on a wood panel in around the year 1300, the Madonna and Child is still in its original engaged frame. The fact that it was in private hands and out of public circulation for years might be why the painting is basically intact after 700 years. The craftsmanship and preservation are simply amazing. • 8. The Turin Shroud Speech (–– removed HTML ––) Perhaps one of the most famous religious relics in the world is the Turin Shroud. Measuring at thirteen–and–a–half feet long by four–and–a–half feet wide, the shroud depicts the image of a bearded man, said to be Jesus Christ. According to the legends, it was used to wrap the body of Christ after crucifixion by Joseph of Arimathea. The first appearance of the shroud in documented history came in 1357, in the little village of Lirey, France. It was then taken to Chambéry in 1457, where it was there in 1532 that the shroud was almost destroyed in a ferocious fire. The event left charred marks on the corner of the folds in the fabric, and in 1578 it was taken to Turin where it has since remained. The Catholic Church is thoroughly convinced that the shroud possesses a genuine physical record of Christ's body, and the cloth is rarely shown to the public. (–– removed HTML ––) (–– removed HTML ––) Although, organized religion has not always been so accepting. Documents written by the Bishop of Troyes and Pope Clement VII from 1389 have been uncovered which note that the Bishop asked the Pontiff to publicly declare that the shroud was merely a painting. He stated that the image had actually been painted by an artists, but the priests in Lirey had started tricking the public into believed it was Christ's authentic death shroud. The Pop bowed to the Bishop's wishes, and declared that the shroud could keep being shown to the public, but each time it was, the local priest was forced to announce to the public that the relic only depicted a painted copy of Christ's real shroud. (–– removed HTML ––) (–– removed HTML ––) Over the course of time such practices dwindled away, and the authenticity of the shroud was assumed. The earliest days of the age of science seemed to confirm this belief. During 1898, photographic experts revealed the image was a negative picture, and when seen in reverse tones, the outline showed a much more detailed view of the body. In subsequent years, Dr. Paul Vignon constructed a theory that such a phenomenon was caused by ammonia emanating from Christ's dead body after his death. I didn't like the painting "The Man of Sorrows" by Michele Giambono because the man in the painting was bleeding real badly. It was an image of Saint Francis receiving the stigmata with a figure of Christ as the man of sorrows. The painting was done using tempera and gold on wood. I liked the painting of Girolamo dai Libri called "Madona and Child with Saints" because it was a very peaceful environment. Tempera and oil on canvas was used in the painting. The drawing "A Hunting Scene" is a very interesting painting but I didn't like it because too much violence was involved. The whole drawing is base on killing. This mural was, and currently is displayed at a refectory in the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. The Last Supper has a unique medium as the method of painting was not fresco, which would have been commonly used for mural paintings at the time. It was painted with a single point perspective inside a room with windows illuminating the beautiful mountainous landscape. That vanishing point happens to lead directly towards Jesus' head as the centerpiece of the artwork alongside all the apostles facing the same direction on one side of the table. The painting itself shows the emotions of each of the apostles when they were told that one of them would betray Jesus. So you can see much shock, anger, and confusion amongst the group with Jesus being centered and separated from the congested group of apostles. The three apostles on the left are only showing emotions of shock and confusion. Next to them, apostle Peter, Christ's protector, looks angered by this news and is even seen holding a knife point the other direction of Jesus. It's almost as if Peter is rushing in and asking, "Who is the betrayer?" ready to do what needs to be done. Meanwhile, apostle John is the only one sitting without emotion or any reaction to this. Sitting right in front of them is apostle Judas who is the actual betrayer of the Jesus. Judas is withdrawn and seems to be hiding under Peter's shadow based on the sudden realization that Jesus knew he would be betrayed. In his hands is a small bag possibly indicating his payment of shekels to betray Jesus while he simultaneously spills the table salt. This spilling of salt has become a popularized omen of evil because of Judas' betrayal. Finally, Jesus is centered with open arms reaching for the same bowl of Judas. Matthew 26: 23 states, "Jesus replied, 'The one who has dipped his hand into the bowl with me will betray me.'" The light blue and dark blue of the sky is different because the stars are illuminating one section of the sky. The artwork is not sophisticated, it's difficult to ascertain if that is a waterfall or a river in the picture but there are more rivers in the south then there are waterfalls so you can assume that this is a river. She appears to be reaching for the stars with her left hand while dragging the chains of oppression with her right hand. Sandro Botticelli And The Birth Of Venus Visual Analysis of Botticelli's Madonna of the Rose Garden and The Birth of Venus The works of both Madonna of the Rose Garden and The Birth of Venus were created by the artist Sandro Botticelli, whose work was seen as an icon of art for the Italian community. His piece, Madonna of the Rose Garden predates the Birth of Venus by around 15 years. Made in Florence for the Arti and Chamber of Commerce, this publicly commissioned painting dates around circa 1470, compared to the Birth of Venus which dates to around 1485. The Madonna of the Rose Garden exemplifies the religious iconography from the artists' attention to details such as the use of color, addition of religious symbols, and attention to the background. Botticelli uses the color blue and red on the Virgin Mary's garment to show the symbols of healing, love, and life. The cloth is quite flowy and covers her whole entire body. Both her red dress and blue overcoat are lined with gold, showing beauty, grace, and holiness. Both the tie around her waist and her veil are white, exemplifying the symbol of purity. She has a faded golden halo around the top of her head, signifying her holiness and connection to God. On her lap, she is cradling a young child who is seen as the Child of God. Jesus is draped in white cloth, showing purity as well. The child's hand is reaching out toward the Virgin Mary's hand to eat a pomegranate. I am unsure of the symbolic meaning of the pomegranate itself, but I know it is a crucial symbol in the religious community and this work. Jesus also has a golden halo resting atop his head, showing a connection to God and a characteristic of holiness and purity. It was created by an artist named Edvard Munch in the year of 1893. Munch was a Norwegian artist. This painting has a great significance in Munch's life. This painting was created during the time of Sigmund Freud. I found this very interesting since Munch himself lived a very tough life himself. Munch began to express his tormented inner world through his artistic creations, giving birth to an art style that would later be known as Expressionism (Art Analysis). Expressionism is defined as a form of art in which visual appearances are distorted to express psychological or emotional states (Getlein, 551). I believe that Scream may have been the very beginning of this form of art, since Scream evokes such an emotional response from its viewers. Roman Art Comparison Essay If one was to describe the Roman art, in my opinion the words realistic, and functional, would give it judgment; which perhaps would describe rather well the pragmatic Romans. Undoubtedly, both the painting and sculpture has its own purpose, and a unique place in society; the Renaissance master Leonardo da Vinci, has rather explicit opinion on the topic: "A sculptor says that his art is more worthy than painting because, fearing humidity, fire, heat, and cold less than painting, it is more eternal. The response to him is that such a thing does not make the sculptor more dignified because the permanence is born from the material and not from the artificer. With the influence of mannerism in Renaissance , the composition of the figures intertwine and create not just complex composition but a dynamic three–dimensional space. Both of the child have its left leg stepping forward, however, because of the diagonal composition in the Dolci painting and the depth expressed by the diagonal accent, it enhances the three–dimensional effect. Dolci's composition is also more unified–meaning the subjects form a dynamic composition relationship. There is more variation of postures in the painting and their limbs, accessories are more intertwined. The scene seems more like a "happening" than a positioned, still portrait. Romano's composition of the space seem to be more layer–based and there are less spatial relationships between the figures. Dolci also introduced a new technique by cropping the image of the subjects with a slight highlighted line. This new technique is unique in a way that it restraint the subject in another area than the frame. Botticelli is using the biblical motif to foreshadow Christ being born. Christ is the right hand of God, so even the annunciation of his coming must be holy and divine. While there is no bible evidence, many believe the angel Gabriel sat at the left hand of God. Rabbi David Cooper says the angel is "connected with the attribute of Gevorah on the left side of the Tree of Life. Whereas Michael is on God's right hand, Gabriel is on God's left hand. The left hand is the one that metes out punishment; the right hand overrules strict justice and is more merciful and thus more lenient" (p. 45). Botticelli seems to agree with the theory of Gabriel sitting at God's left hand by the placement on the angel. While the does have a column directly diving the space, the gaps between the columns and the walk way into the chapel combines the two sections. Botticelli seems to be inferring for the angel to walk into the chapel and see Mary. The figures are also bowing toward one another. Not only are they bowing because they are in the house of God, but they seem to acknowledge one another in their bowing.
