He is a nan deeply disturbed by the loss of his wife and unborn child to cancer. In fact the book opens shorrly after
their deaEhs and the scottish setElng seems Lo supporL his grief somewhaE with all its chill misEs and heatherish texlure.
Dunstan MarLin presents us with inages thaE fairly drip wlt.h the flavour of the place, but here is not the Scolland we
know today. IE is a country thaE has barely survived a nuclear holocausE, a ScoEland whose ciEizens uear radiaLion
sults out of doors and have lurned to many bizzare religions for moral and spiritual succour. The governmenl has. long
since collapsed and the administration is handled by the clergy. Such is Gilchristts vorld.
Gilchrist, however, is not the first character Eo whom we are intorudced. In fact, borh in the prologue and the
beginning of the firsE chapter we focus on the activities of one Jenny Blinkbonny, a teacher. Specifically we witness
a religious catechism between Jenny and the Birls of her class and learn a little more about the Populations voerall
beliefs and the reaons for the bombing and iLs afEermaEh.
Interspersed with Ehis are glimpses of Gilchrist, from his at.Eendence at a church ceremony that. is odd, to say the
leasE, to his neeting of ttre raiher ineffectual Virgil Applebaum who is to sland in Gilchristrs shadow during the
events Co cone and who is responsible for Gilchrist being at a local pub where he j.s introduced - after a fashion - to
Jenny Blinkbonny. Inspired co feel sympathy for Gilchrist Jenny takes it upon ehrself !o attend to his welfare. Thus,
a reiagionshlp developl and all flows smoothly unEil Gilchrist loses his job and is nearly killed in an accident
involving a carriage. IE is this incidenL thaE Gilchrist sees as the turning poin! in his existance. The resr of
the novel Is conceined with Gilchristr creation of a new Church and his rise to power within that Church.
Tlme-slip ls a book that is irnmensly satisfying - Dunstan-Miartin writes in a style that is crisp and readable
though a lttcle heavy in'places and che occasional Ewisls he gives to his characEerst thoughts and gheir perceplion
of time are interesting to watch. Ic is a book that needs to be read fairly closely if the full meaning is to be
gleaned buE it rewards this extra effort well in Ehe end. But be warned' iE is a book thaE is very hard to pur
down once you have become involved.

I cannot honesgly say that this is my favourite Piers AnLhony book, or thaL iE is his best novel to date - but it is
cerEainly hrorth reading. When I first sEarled on iE, I thought some of Lhe concepts were rather outdated. I
flipped irom front to back looking for some indicauion of the bookrs hisrory. I found it in the back - the original
story had been wrllten in the sixtles. My puzzlemen! was laid to rest. and I read on.
Piers Anthonyrs tine lravel concepLs as they appear in GH0ST are far from simple or familiar - bu! lhey are logi.ca1
and lead to some very strange and unique events. Those of you famlliar with his XANTH novels will recognise his kooky
sEyle when the "Meg" and ehr crew hic the edge of a black hole....

A colleccion of science fiction and fantasy related !o Ehe Vietnam War, by such well-known authors as Kim Stanley

the 22 slories ln this volune, only five have been published before.
Ten years after the lasg Anerican troops left Vietnam, Americans have been re-examining the war, its effects on
thosl who participaged and those who didnrE, and the polluical and psychological quesEions raised. Films' television
series, and books have been pouring out on topics !ha! 6 few years ago mosE Americans were trying to forgeE.
Mos! of the stories in this volume deal wiEh Ehe psychological effec[s of a war fought. rnainly by teenagers, for
reasons they didntU undersEand, in circunstances where they knew theyrd be home again in a year if they lived uhat
long, and where strong drugs were cheap and readily available. The stories examine not only experiences in Vietnam
itself, but the after-effects on Ehe survivors and their families.
Each st,ory is well written, and all left haunting memorl-es in this readerrs nind. Some are horrifyingly replistic/
ot.hers are bizarre fantasies. Alfhough all supposedly are uniled by the theme of the Vietnam experience, each could
jusE as well be se! anywhere, in any wai, and lhus should have as much impact on someone whose involvement (even
vicarious) with Vletnan was minimal.

There seens to be a rash of recent novels abouE the interaction of rnultlple Lime lines. some try to explain quantum
physics, uncertalnLy principles, and fhe theory of parallel universes, as well as lelling a story. This short novel
a"iur"s the reader knows enough about the theory and jus! gets on with the story. It involves Paris in three eras!
the 1928 surrealisE novement, the 1968 student uprising, and 2008 when t.he revolution begun uith the surrealists
reaches its climax.
Itrs mosEly the alory of RoberL, a dislllusloned young man of Ehe 20rs, who is seeklng some meanlng ln his llfe. lle
neets and iaLls ln love uifh Solange, a studenL of lhe 60rs. Visits fo ehr fime brlng confrontation with surrealistlc
values in a revolutionary seEting, and a chance to D0 something rather than merely theorise. Contributing !o the
tension is a strange (evil?) masaed presence thalrs broken into the Limelines and is threatening them all with their
own worsL nlghtrnares.
Sone of the dozen or so characters are hisrorical figures. I enjoyed the speculaLive approach of uhe book: Whar if
surrealism uere a Dore wldespread atriEude? Whag if people LIVBD their theories instead of jusE propounding them?
Would/could Ehey change the world? Wou1d they like the new uorld once Lhey 8ou t.here, and would iL be anythinS like
what. they expecled? Dontt think, however, Lhat Lhe bookrs entirely philosophical: Goldstein packs plenLy of actiort
into these pages, too.

compulsively along but offers litrle that is challenging, new or unique.
Beginning wiEh a classic scenario, SPINNERET opens in 2016, as the Aurora,EarEhts first hyperspace craft deparLs in
search of new worlds chat humanily might peacefully coLonize. She is followed by oEher vessels and each is confronLe(l
by evidence leading !o the same conclusion - as far as inEelligent li.fe goes, we cerEainly are not alone.

And so, Eo a small group of farmers and scienlist.s under an American military administration, Astra becomes home; a
home tha! is to prove anything but swee! however, as from the firsl day inexplicable events start !o take place. A
flyer goes down for no reason' killing its crew, then a week later all metal in conEact with the planegrs surface siltks
inEo t.he ground and disappears; strange magnetic field shifts Eake place and the localised graviiy around Mt. OJympus,
seemingly a dormant volcanor Soes beserk till a met.allic cable is shoE from Lhe volcano cone high into orbit arouncl Astra.
The cable, less dense than waler, with a t.ensile st.rength of ten Lo the twelfth pounds per squaie inch, is supercontluctive,
super sEicky, and also in super demand.
Just how unusual a p1.anet. Ast.ra is, whaL the purpose of Ehe Spinner cable is and how the human colonists deal with
itr is whaE the novel concerns itself wlth. The developing plot. and easy st.yle of SPINNERET draws you along through
well-cultivaLed curiosit.y, and the book is hard to put down. The infusion oi current scientific idlas is also
iEneresling and is conveyed simply enough so that anyone with a basic understanding of the periodic table can understand
the iedeas incorporated in the novel.
SPINNERET is a story set. in the fulure wilh a beginning, a middle and an end that is clear cug and easily defined. It
lesy6 the reader satlsfied but with not much !o think about.

The opinion was a foregone conclusion; I'm biased, I already love Terry Pratchelt - having read Tllli COLOUR 0l'MACIC
and TIIE LICIIT FANTASTIC and laughed myself sick.
You really should start at Ehe beginning, with THE CoLoUR 0F MAGIC and TIIE LIGIIT FANTASTIC; EQUAL RITIS is seL on
the snae world. For those who have read the preceding rwo, EQUAL RITES has nolhing to do wirh Rincewind, Twoflover
and the Luggage. These characlers are replaced by a nine yeai ofd girl, an old wiEch called Granny antl a wizard's
staff. The 9 y.o. girl, called Escarina, is the eighth daughter of an eighth son. You will appreciate the
significance of the number eight if yourve read the other two books.
The problem is that she was supposed to be a boy. When she was born an old dying wizard arrived and, without
bothering to peep inside the swaddling, imparts all his powers Eo the baby and leaves his magic stafi behind when he
leaves with DEATH (WIl0 TALKS IN CAPITALS). Now, everyone knows that women canrt. be wizards; witches, yes. but Lhe
magic of wizards and lhe magic of witches is differenc, and as Escarina grows lhe wizard magic begins rL take hold of
!1".. 01d Granny, who tries to train her as a witch, evenLually realises thaE the girl must be taken to Unseen
Universit.y to be lrained in the use of the power. Gerting there is one thing, get;ing in is another. The University
is not withouc women; women do the cooking, washing, cleaning etc., but the study and practice of magic be]ongs onty
to the chain-smoking, bearded, robed and celibaEe men (in TllE LIGHT FANTASTIC Riniewj,nd discovers why wizards ndidn'i
have much truck wj.th sextt).
Aside from the main characters' everyching about EQUAL RITES is as wacky as the two preceding it. Great ArTuin, a
turtle ten Lhousand miles long who carries upon His/Her/Its (rhey haventt worked out which) back four huge elepirancs,
who in turn carry the Discvorld. As it says in.one of the books, when lhey talk about ships tlisappearin! over'the
horizon, theyrre noL kidding. As for PraLcheEL's style...wha! can I say? It kept r" uru""d for iours. Keep it up,
Mr. Prat.chett - I want to know vhat. happens to Unseen University when it goes co:ed.

momenE they are released. The time of embobblement could be a few seconds to thousands of

firsr bobbles were used for 1aw enforcement and such, then for proEection during war, since even a nucliar explosion
does not affect a bobble or whac/who it. encloses.
This story takes place hudnreds of lhousands of years after a major nuclear war. A few rich fanilies have escapcd Lhe
war and its aftermath by effectivelyrmoving forward in timer. They emerge from their bobbles every nolr and thtn,tahe
a look around Eo see how the rest. of t.he vorld is gercing on, decide they don'E like it, and bobble up again. Sonie
are getting quite keen on seeing the collapse of Lhe sun before Lhey finally grow oJ.d and die. Their imiortality
is a fake: ralher than living forever, Lhey live only a few hours or days aL a tlme, sampling Lhe passage of rj.nre.
But what of those vho have been carried along by accident? 0r who decide they want to stop somevhen ancl live ou!
thei-r norrnal lifespan? Factions develop in the group of ternporal refugees. And then one influencial r{oman gets
accidentally (?) left. behind when everyone else bobbles up. She doesntt know when they will reappear. Shouirl s1e
stay near the bobbles and waic? Should she go exploring? Ilow would YOU feel if you were the oniy known living human
being on Earth, buc at any lime a group of others could show up and rescue you? tloukl you
