6. NUTRITION BEES
BEES ARE HERBIVOROUS SINCE THEY EAT POLLEN AND NECTAR FROM A VARIETY
OF FLOWERS. Honey bees are attracted to gardens and fields that offer a variety of
flowering.

BEE’S
NUTRITION
8. NUTRITION BEES
Honey bees collect
nectar and convert it to honey.
The majority of honey bee larvae
eat honey, but larvae that are
chosen to become future queens
will be fed with royal jelly. Royal
jelly is a white secretion
produced by young, female
worker bees. It is comprised of
pollen and chemicals from the
glands of worker bees.
Only workers forage for food, consuming as much nectar from each
flower as they can. After foraging, worker honey bees return to the hive
and pass (vomit) the collected nectar to another worker. This worker holds
the nectar on her tongue until the liquid evaporates, creating honey. The
honey is then stored in a cell within the hive.
9. NUTRITION BEES
Since chosen honey bee queens
eat only royal jelly, they grow quickly
and become twice the size of an
ordinary honey bee. Due to the rich
nutritional value of royal jelly, queens
can survive five years and lay up to
2,000 eggs each day.
Royal jelly contains dietary
supplements, fertility stimulants and
other medicines, as well as B
vitamins. Workers and drones are
fed royal jelly during the first few
days of larval development, while
future queen larvae consume royal
jelly throughout their development.
10. NUTRITION BEES
Drones are the largest bees in the honey
bee colony and a bigger body needs more
food. That's why drones eat three times as
much food as workers, and an excessive
number of drones may place an added stress
on the colony's food supply. In autumn they
are kicked out of the hive, being considered
unnecessary burdens.

12. ANIMALS
CLASSIFICATION
ACCORDING TO:
HOW THEY ARE
BORN
VIVIPAROUS
OVIPAROUS
They are born from mum’s
womb. They grow inside
their mother until they are
born.
They are born from eggs.
They lay eggs and the babies
then grow inside the eggs
until they are ready to come
out.
OVOVIPAROUS
They are born from eggs but inside
the mum’s womb. The eggs are
hatched inside the mum’s body and
the young ones are completely
formed.
REPRODUCTION
14. REPRODUCTION BEES
Only the queen bee and the drones have a fully developed reproductive
system. The worker bees have an atrophic reproductive system. Seven days
after her incubation the queen bee flies outside the beehive, where drones
gather, and she mates usually with 8-12 drones in mid-air and in approximately
a 25-meter height, in temperatures higher than 20°C, with wind speed lower
than 28 km/h and during afternoon hours. During mating, the drone’s genitals
(penis) are reversed and come out of his body, and with his abdominal
muscles contracting, he ejaculates. Later, his genitals are being cut from his
body causing his death. Parts of his genitals remain inside the queen’s vagina –
called the “mating sign” – and are removed by the next drone. Mating lasts 5-
18 minutes. The queen stores the entire spermatozoon in the spermatheca and
her gland excretes nutrients for the survival of almost 7,000,000 spermatozoa,
which are adequate for the rest of her life. Therefore, during the egg-laying
the queen bee chooses whether she will fertilize every egg that passes
through her oviduct.
15. REPRODUCTION BEES
The Queen Bee mates with
8-12 drones in the air.
The drone ejaculates (discharges
semen) inside the queen bee’s
vagina. Then, his penis gets stuck
and it is cut from his body, so that
the drone dies.
It lasts 5-18 minutes.
16. REPRODUCTION BEES
The Queen Bee stores almost 7
million spermatozoa inside her
body. Then, she decides if she wants
to fertilize the eggs or not .
The queen bee lays two kinds of eggs:
fertilized and non-fertilized eggs. The non-
fertilized eggs will develop into drones, while
the fertilized will grow into female individuals.
Afterwards, the female individuals can
develop into queens or workers, depending
on their nutrition during their larva stage.
17. REPRODUCTION BEESTYPE OF BEE TIME TO BECOME AN ADULT

DRONE 24 DAYS
WORKER BEE 21 DAYS (RANGE: 18-22 DAYS)
