2. Genre Conventions
Typical conventions used in the plot of an Action genre:
- Good Guys and Bad Guys (Bad Guys are often kept in the
dark)
- Fast cars
- Lots of chasing
- Explosions
- The hero is normally quite well kept
Typical Conventions used in the filming of an Action Genre:
- Depending on whether or not the hero does this often, the
camera shot will be without cuts and a long shot of scene
will be done by panning.
- The panning will follow the action seamlessly.
- Sometimes if a long lasting shot has not been used, lots
of short cuts will be used to give the viewer a sense of
speed and urgency
- A good convention is to use lots of small, quick action
shots used immediately after each other to give the
viewer a sense of continues action, that won’t stop
easily.
- Some shots are quite wide so it can include lots of the
action however it is more likely to see quick close up
shots of the action.
The titles are short; they often include diegetic sounds like
shot gun fire etc. Titles will be normally at the beginning of
the film to introduce it and will supply vital information to
what is about to occur.
In scenes full of suspense, it is normally dark, with 1 or 2
light sources. Without showing too much detail of the
character or what they are trying to achieve. Normally the
faces are hidden or backs to camera if they are trying to be
stealthy. If the character is not trying to hide, then they
will not hide form the camera and detail will be shown of the
person.
