4. Teaching Interests: I am a student of Basic Visual thinking for the last 4 decades. I was
awarded a Daxnia Fellowship in Sir. J.J. Institute of Applied Art to teach Basic Design in
1972. I could develop the Basic Terminologies and Assignments on Fundamentals of Visual
Art “Basic Visual Elements”. My father, Late Prof. R.P. Joshi, who was a Painter and Art
Educationist for 50 years, guided me to do research on Basic Visual thinking. Last 39 years, I
have had the opportunity to practice and also to teach this subject in various Art disciplines such as
Architecture, Printing Technology, Applied Art and Computer Graphics.
3
4
This has given me Holistic view to look at my subject of Research. In fact, I see to it while
introducing this subject to the any new batch of Graphic Design, the Elements of Visual Art are
taught differently. This has been rewarding for me in a way to create new Educational material
for higher Art. I am inspired by ‘Bauhaus School, Paul Klee, Paul Rand, Moholy – Nagy, Itten’
and in ‘Sir. J.J’s. my guru ’Prof. Shantaram Pawar, Prof. V.R. Amberkar Prof. V.N. Yande, and
Prof. H.G. Hanumante’ they gave me professional insight.
5. Course Development:
A) The concept of fusion Art and Computer was developed by me to translate foundation of Art
i.e. Basic Visual thinking into the mould of Computer Technology. The objective was to prepare
Computer Applicators and not just operators. This computer aided foundation of Art is
recognized course syllabus, which is the official Ten months course conducted at Thane School
of Art.
B) The concept of Design awareness in Graphic Arts was introduced at Government Institute of
Printing Technology – Mumbai to create aesthetic sensitivity among the students of Printing
Technology. In this various Art works were scrutinised to the level of preparing different Print &
Production Methodologies. This has given qualitative input in ultimately revising their official
Design subject syllabus. This has given an understanding to the would be Printers bout the
language of aesthetics to print the job with quality.
C) The objective was to develop the concept of Calligraphy to be taken up as solid foundation
for designing various Type Design Fonts. This was done on the invitation of Directorate of Arts
– Maharashtra State for the Students of Applied Art and Graphic Design all over Maharashtra
State.
D) My last three years here in this Global Graphic Design education has given good opportunity
to introspect my previous teaching ideas. The first was of Wigan Leigh College – U.K., which is
actually focusing on Vocational approach rather than full time course. This course is meant for
those semi – professionals who needs to brush up while they are in the jobs. It is a part time
course and its rationales are designed accordingly.
E) The second is Cambrian College of Applied Arts & Technology – Canada which is based on
the famous Bauhaus School. The concept of this College is to translate the pure Fine Arts into
functional Applied Art. The term Applied Art encompasses various disciplines such as Music,
Drama, Cinema and Literature. The concept of three Domains of learning i.e. Cognitive,
Affective, and Psychomotor are beautiful to teach systematically. In this, I could add the value
from local and Indian Visual thinking such as Phonetics to Graphics. I could view all the isms of
Art from Applied Art point of view, for this, some teaching methodologies such as FROM
WHOLE TO THE PART, FROM KNOWN TO UNKNOWN were introduced.
F) The third is University of Huddersfield – U.K. Which is focusing purely on Business
Practices? This is a new approach in our Art education. The dominant focus on Business
element should be balanced with 60% of Creative angle because looking at the Indian Ad-world;
pure Business approach will lead to Servicing Executives rather than Art Directors.
G) In 2011 the exposure to the Ecole Intuit.Lab. From France is purely focusing on design,
drawing which I am relating to colour. Colour vocabulary, medium and surface and final visual
impression are the central concepts in context to print and electronic media application.
6. Quality of Teaching: Visual Communication is the subject of my Research for Quality
Teaching. In the year 1974 at Sir. J.J. Institute of Applied Art, I founded the club of Visual
Communication. The objective was to create a common platform for exchanging of ideas
among students, professionals and academicians. The concept was defined into Rural and
Urban Visual communication to understand the difference of Visual cultures. I developed Visual
literacy tests to collect the feed back.
5
This did help to remodify Visualized material. The Visual literacy test is my solid educational
tool. This also is scientific tool to audit Visuals. Typography is a major subject of my studies.
My focus has been to research the roots of alphabetic forms which are derived from
Calligraphy. The Calligraphy have been most useful means to learn Typography’s various
applications.
7. Innovative Practice: The Colour subject has been my interest of study in the Professional,
Teaching and Research study. Dr. (Mrs.) Shalini Patwardhan, a known Colour Scientist and
my father, Late Prof. R.P. Joshi had been my guiding source for this subject. The Advanced
Colour theory which I have been teaching is useful for Colour calibration in Computer and Print
Media. 1985: Published in the proceedings of International Colour Conference a
research paper on Role of Colour in Audio – Visual Education’ with invitation to present
in form of a “POSTER PRESENTATION” at Monte Carlo–France which was presented by
Co–author Dr.Shalini Patwardhan in France. Focuses on Colour identifications for
(blinds) visually impaired. To research into colour visual literacy and calibrations for
technical needs.

French educational programmer in Graphic Design at Empire Institute of Learning at Lower
Parel-Mumbai (Bombay). As a Sr. Core faculty in Graphic Design, along with my Head of the
Department Mrs. Jamila Q. Varawalla following programmed were successfully implemented
with good support of Alliance Françoise de Bombay (Mumbai). My students and community in
Mumbai where I reside were extremely benefited by these activities for the greater insight of
FRENCH CULTURE. Following are the few programmed documented by me as a teacher,
which enriched my vision in today’s global context.
1) Roland SehĂ€r – A painter & Fine Artist who gave a different insight about visual thinking i.e.
realistic paintings and it’s encoding in renaissance period. Second is metamorphosis and
sequential thinking.
2) The New Generation of Graphic Design in FRANCE an exhibition from the centre
POMPIDOU-FRANCE. Actual work reproductions elevated the knowledge of History of
Graphic Design and contemporary context of it in today’s world. I could create a visual literary
test for my students from this material.
3) Ms. Adriana Patrick Deyvant – A graphic designer with Mexican background gave a better
insight about POSTCARD-DESIGN ART and its iconography. She also showed French &
European Graphic Design Concepts in this medium. This medium is yet not explored in India.
4) Tribute to Henri De Toulouse Lautrec - This exhibition at National Gallery of Modern Art –
Mumbai motivated us to create the series of assignments in the class, which became one of
the best educational materials. Mr. Alien Weill famous Poster Art Curator, of the same
exhibition has been extremely beneficial. The Book on the History of FRENCH POSTER ART
given by Alien Weill is precious collection in my Library. The sixty Poster Art set given by Ms.
Florence Robert on “TRIBUTE TO SAVINGNACS” gave me great opportunity to start a
research work on the subject of visual cultural similarities between India and France. I wrote a
research article on this in my mother tongue i.e. Marathi about our artist S. D. Phadnis &
Savingnacs which has aptly communicated Savingnacs work’s information in the local
Maharashtra. This is extended further by creating a poster in a form of a scroll on the subject
of parallelism between Savingnacs and S. D. Phadnis. I am looking forward for this to continue
in larger scale for creating series on such subjects to demonstrate the concept of Global to
local cultural patterns and it understands for my visual literacy projects. 5) A workshop for
children’s book – this gave me a great opportunity to actually participate as an artist with two
French great counterparts. A book published as an outcome of this workshop by the good
initiatives of Mr. Patrick Deyvant – the Director Alliance Françoise De Bombay names “My
Kite”. I met two French artist, Yan Thomas an engraver, etcher and painter whose work was a
different visual experience. The second person was Ms. Muriel Carminati- a poet; children’s
storywriter from France gave a good insight of French higher-level literature. She extended her
co-operation in one more idea of mine, - book for children by writing beautiful poems. This is
an experiment I wish to take it further as interactive mini book for global children with the help of
Ms. Muriel Carminati and Indian writers, children Painters.
8
This would be an example to understand how imagination can work in different ways
from the same ground. This could be truly global interactive e-book as a part of
Franco-Indian cultural collaboration on Internet. It is published by Basoli Group in
Nagpur, India.
6) An exhibition on New Fashion Photography-vision 01 – Our students realized how day-to-
day life becomes fashion statements. The new visual imagery in this exhibition was a good
eye opener.
7) Christian Cailleaux – A comic artist from Paris – A useful workshop with twenty students
with him was an experience to remember. The outcome of it is published in IMPRESSIONS –
Javier 2005 of Alliance Françoise de Bombay. He taught how to be scripter, artist and
animator simultaneously.
8) Ă©cole.intuit/lab – This was the most exciting part of all these activities. Our two students
went to Paris to understand their course delivering and their two students came to our college
in Mumbai-(India) to understand our course delivery in Graphic Design. This tie-up is truly an
exchange of ideas between the two countries.

I was awarded a Daxnia Fellowship in Sir. J.J. Institute of Applied Art to teach Basic Design in 1972. I could develop the Basic Terminologies and Assignments on Fundamentals of Visual Art “Basic Visual Elements”. My father, Late Prof. R.P. Joshi, who was a Painter and Art Educationist for 50 years, guided me to do research on Basic Visual thinking. Last 39 years, I have had the opportunity to practice and also to teach this subject in various Art disciplines such as  Architecture, Printing Technology, Applied Art and Computer Graphics. 3
  • 4. 4 This has given me Holistic view to look at my subject of Research. In fact, I see to it while introducing this subject to the any new batch of Graphic Design, the Elements of Visual Art are taught differently. This has been rewarding for me in a way to create new Educational material for higher Art. I am inspired by ‘Bauhaus School, Paul Klee, Paul Rand, Moholy – Nagy, Itten’ and in ‘Sir. J.J’s. my guru ’Prof. Shantaram Pawar, Prof. V.R. Amberkar Prof. V.N. Yande, and Prof. H.G. Hanumante’ they gave me professional insight. 5. Course Development: A) The concept of fusion Art and Computer was developed by me to translate foundation of Art i.e. Basic Visual thinking into the mould of Computer Technology. The objective was to prepare Computer Applicators and not just operators. This computer aided foundation of Art is recognized course syllabus, which is the official Ten months course conducted at Thane School of Art. B) The concept of Design awareness in Graphic Arts was introduced at Government Institute of Printing Technology – Mumbai to create aesthetic sensitivity among the students of Printing Technology. In this various Art works were scrutinised to the level of preparing different Print & Production Methodologies. This has given qualitative input in ultimately revising their official Design subject syllabus. This has given an understanding to the would be Printers bout the language of aesthetics to print the job with quality. C) The objective was to develop the concept of Calligraphy to be taken up as solid foundation for designing various Type Design Fonts. This was done on the invitation of Directorate of Arts – Maharashtra State for the Students of Applied Art and Graphic Design all over Maharashtra State. D) My last three years here in this Global Graphic Design education has given good opportunity to introspect my previous teaching ideas. The first was of Wigan Leigh College – U.K., which is actually focusing on Vocational approach rather than full time course. This course is meant for those semi – professionals who needs to brush up while they are in the jobs. It is a part time course and its rationales are designed accordingly. E) The second is Cambrian College of Applied Arts & Technology – Canada which is based on the famous Bauhaus School. The concept of this College is to translate the pure Fine Arts into functional Applied Art. The term Applied Art encompasses various disciplines such as Music, Drama, Cinema and Literature. The concept of three Domains of learning i.e. Cognitive, Affective, and Psychomotor are beautiful to teach systematically. In this, I could add the value from local and Indian Visual thinking such as Phonetics to Graphics. I could view all the isms of Art from Applied Art point of view, for this, some teaching methodologies such as FROM WHOLE TO THE PART, FROM KNOWN TO UNKNOWN were introduced. F) The third is University of Huddersfield – U.K. Which is focusing purely on Business Practices? This is a new approach in our Art education. The dominant focus on Business element should be balanced with 60% of Creative angle because looking at the Indian Ad-world; pure Business approach will lead to Servicing Executives rather than Art Directors. G) In 2011 the exposure to the Ecole Intuit.Lab. From France is purely focusing on design, drawing which I am relating to colour. Colour vocabulary, medium and surface and final visual impression are the central concepts in context to print and electronic media application. 6. Quality of Teaching: Visual Communication is the subject of my Research for Quality Teaching. In the year 1974 at Sir. J.J. Institute of Applied Art, I founded the club of Visual Communication. The objective was to create a common platform for exchanging of ideas among students, professionals and academicians. The concept was defined into Rural and Urban Visual communication to understand the difference of Visual cultures. I developed Visual literacy tests to collect the feed back.
  • 5. 5 This did help to remodify Visualized material. The Visual literacy test is my solid educational tool. This also is scientific tool to audit Visuals. Typography is a major subject of my studies. My focus has been to research the roots of alphabetic forms which are derived from Calligraphy. The Calligraphy have been most useful means to learn Typography’s various applications. 7. Innovative Practice: The Colour subject has been my interest of study in the Professional, Teaching and Research study. Dr. (Mrs.) Shalini Patwardhan, a known Colour Scientist and my father, Late Prof. R.P. Joshi had been my guiding source for this subject. The Advanced Colour theory which I have been teaching is useful for Colour calibration in Computer and Print Media. 1985: Published in the proceedings of International Colour Conference a research paper on Role of Colour in Audio – Visual Education’ with invitation to present in form of a “POSTER PRESENTATION” at Monte Carlo–France which was presented by Co–author Dr.Shalini Patwardhan in France. Focuses on Colour identifications for (blinds) visually impaired. To research into colour visual literacy and calibrations for technical needs. 8. Research interests: 1974 Founded Club of Visual Communication in Sir.J.J. As a Sr. Core faculty in Graphic Design, along with my Head of the Department Mrs. Jamila Q. Varawalla following programmed were successfully implemented with good support of Alliance Françoise de Bombay (Mumbai). My students and community in Mumbai where I reside were extremely benefited by these activities for the greater insight of FRENCH CULTURE. Following are the few programmed documented by me as a teacher, which enriched my vision in today’s global context. 1) Roland SehĂ€r – A painter & Fine Artist who gave a different insight about visual thinking i.e. realistic paintings and it’s encoding in renaissance period. Second is metamorphosis and sequential thinking. 2) The New Generation of Graphic Design in FRANCE an exhibition from the centre POMPIDOU-FRANCE. Actual work reproductions elevated the knowledge of History of Graphic Design and contemporary context of it in today’s world. I could create a visual literary test for my students from this material. 3) Ms. Adriana Patrick Deyvant – A graphic designer with Mexican background gave a better insight about POSTCARD-DESIGN ART and its iconography. She also showed French & European Graphic Design Concepts in this medium. This medium is yet not explored in India. 4) Tribute to Henri De Toulouse Lautrec - This exhibition at National Gallery of Modern Art – Mumbai motivated us to create the series of assignments in the class, which became one of the best educational materials. Mr. Alien Weill famous Poster Art Curator, of the same exhibition has been extremely beneficial. The Book on the History of FRENCH POSTER ART given by Alien Weill is precious collection in my Library. The sixty Poster Art set given by Ms. Florence Robert on “TRIBUTE TO SAVINGNACS” gave me great opportunity to start a research work on the subject of visual cultural similarities between India and France. I wrote a research article on this in my mother tongue i.e. Marathi about our artist S. D. Phadnis & Savingnacs which has aptly communicated Savingnacs work’s information in the local Maharashtra. This is extended further by creating a poster in a form of a scroll on the subject of parallelism between Savingnacs and S. D. Phadnis. I am looking forward for this to continue in larger scale for creating series on such subjects to demonstrate the concept of Global to local cultural patterns and it understands for my visual literacy projects. 5) A workshop for children’s book – this gave me a great opportunity to actually participate as an artist with two French great counterparts. A book published as an outcome of this workshop by the good initiatives of Mr. Patrick Deyvant – the Director Alliance Françoise De Bombay names “My Kite”. I met two French artist, Yan Thomas an engraver, etcher and painter whose work was a different visual experience. The second person was Ms. Muriel Carminati- a poet; children’s storywriter from France gave a good insight of French higher-level literature. She extended her co-operation in one more idea of mine, - book for children by writing beautiful poems. This is an experiment I wish to take it further as interactive mini book for global children with the help of  Ms. Muriel Carminati and Indian writers, children Painters.
  • 8. 8 This would be an example to understand how imagination can work in different ways from the same ground. This could be truly global interactive e-book as a part of Franco-Indian cultural collaboration on Internet. It is published by Basoli Group in Nagpur, India. 6) An exhibition on New Fashion Photography-vision 01 – Our students realized how day-to- day life becomes fashion statements. The new visual imagery in this exhibition was a good eye opener. 7) Christian Cailleaux – A comic artist from Paris – A useful workshop with twenty students with him was an experience to remember. The outcome of it is published in IMPRESSIONS – Javier 2005 of Alliance Françoise de Bombay. He taught how to be scripter, artist and animator simultaneously. 8) Ă©cole.intuit/lab – This was the most exciting part of all these activities. Our two students went to Paris to understand their course delivering and their two students came to our college in Mumbai-(India) to understand our course delivery in Graphic Design. This tie-up is truly an exchange of ideas between the two countries. à€Żà€•à€Čà€Ÿ à€–à€‚à€Ą-à€żà€¶ à€Șà€•à€Ÿà€° à€šà€żà€°à€€à„à€°à€•à„‹à€¶-à€żà€čà€‚à€Šà„ à€€à€Ÿà€š à€Șà„à€°à€•à€Ÿà€¶à€š-à€‡.à€ž.à„šà„Šà„§à„©.
