Teaching as a Profession Essay
Teaching as a Profession
Individuals who enter the field of education reply to the question why teach with various answers.
There is beauty, joy, and fulfillment in this profession, and these spirit–lifting emotions are the result
of watching annually as a new group of children enter to learn and leave with the knowledge to
achieve. Richard Dufour (2000), author of Why Teach expressed his views on theprofession first by
stating that teaching is not the career for everyone. He goes on to say, that the education profession
has the ability to present the "unique opportunity" for individuals to cast a positive influence upon
others (Why Teach, 2000, p.1). The smiles received from a room full of students when as a whole

The Department of Education's National Center for Education has found that on average there are
342,000 crimes that are nonfatal and 69,000 fatal crimes (sexual assault, robbery, and aggravated
assault) that occur per year in school. Federal law protects students that are classified as disabled
from suspension, thereby keeping dangerous students in the classroom to pose further threat.
Recruiting and retaining
After knowing the downfalls of teaching, the lack of interest in the profession is self–explanatory
however, somebody has to overlook the negative for the educational success of America's children.
Various efforts are being made to recruit and retain individuals to the wonderful world of education.
Resources in the form of financial aid and grant programs as incentives are growing. These
incentives offer money towards the completion of higher education in exchange for the recipients
service. Programs are offered through colleges and universities, as well as by the state and national
governments. Through the development of programs, private organizations have also begun lending
their support to the profession.
There is competition among the profession to offer the best incentives in order to attract interest.
The idea is to make the recruitment creative and appealing. In Massachusetts, as in other states, the
incentive is a signing bonus. Upon signing, teachers receive a $20,000 bonus under the

Winston Churchill once said "Kites rise highest against the wind (1942)." Teachers must find enough
determination to overcome the adversity, stress, and other factors that might be sending them the
message to leave their job, and stick with it. A teaching profession has some positive benefits, but the
negative aspects are enough to push people away from a career in this field. Looking in from the
outside, a job as a teacher seems ideal. In what other profession do you have every weekend,
holiday, and the whole summer off? This is enough to draw a lot of people to the job, but it is not
glamorous enough to keep these new teachers around for long and this creates a shortage. There are
many reasons causing this...show more content...
Besides these examples, teachers are fleeing the scene across the country for many other reasons also.
Stress on the job is one of the main reasons that teachers leave. There are many causes of the stress
that teachers encounter in their profession. For one, unrelenting students asking questions and
complaining about grades pester them every day. Some teachers claim that it is the large size of
classes and the inability to keep the full attention of their students. Other teachers point to the
mixture of children with mental handicaps and the children who learn at a normal pace (Conley
and Woosley, 2000). Stress can come from that because the teacher will have to slow their lesson
plan to make sure the slower student can still gain as much knowledge as the rest of the class.
This becomes more of a problem because the students with regular learning capabilities often
become bored with the slow pace that the class is taking. Another factor that contributes to stress
experienced by teachers is the overload of paperwork. This comes about when class sizes are large
because the teacher will have an enormous amount of homework or tests to grade and it will take up
a lot of their time. The last factor that contributes to their stress is the lack of association with their
co–workers (Reising and Denlinger, 2002). Most of the day, teachers are confined to a classroom
with nothing but
