Genre Research
1.
2. MY CHOSEN GENRE
The genre I have chosen to study is Psychological Drama.
Psychological dramas are a sub-genre consisting of such conventions as
unstable characters, emotions and brake downs of characteristic in a
person.
In these films, rather than work around the basis of a linear story line, the
movie usually centers around the psychology of the character. An
example of a director who’s work mainly revolves around that of the
genre of psychological dramas is Darren Aronofsky with works such as
Requiem for a Dream, Black Swan and The Wrestler.
3. PSYCHOLOGICAL DRAMA – THE AUDIENCE
The primary audience range of psychological dramas can vary with the
approach/inclusion of age groups within the film itself. For example a
film based around the psyche of teenage life would probably attract the
teenage to late twenties age range. However as a broader overview of
the genre, Id say that the the audience would range from late teens to
late 40s as a generalization.
4. SUMMARIZING
To summarize my findings, I believe the viewers/target audience are a bit
more of a sophisticated cinema goer than your average Hollywood
zombie.
They wish to seek out a deeper more complex film which tries to make a
statement or convey a message rather than good wins over bed: end of
movie. I am going to take into account these matters and try adapt and
intergrade them into my writing and filming to try achieve my maximum
potential and effectiveness in my film opening.
