The document provides analysis of opening title sequences for three films: Se7en, The Memento, and Psycho. For Se7en, the titles create a sense of chaos and discomfort. For The Memento, the titles imply that something bad has happened through the use of sound and a close-up shot of a man with blood on his face. For Psycho, the fragmented title can represent a split mind or manipulation, and the black and white imagery contrasts innocence with danger.
2. Se7en
• The way in which Se7en starts, gives the audience
the idea that this film is a psychological thriller. The
fuzziness and constant disorientation can represent
a state of chaos.
• The scratchy like sound is an effective tool as it can
make the person watching feel rather
uncomfortable in their seat while watching.
• The constant appearance of the film title in
disoriented font and placed over each other could
show that whoever the protagonist is, their life
could be messy and chaotic or they could be
suffering from something which they are unaware
of.
• In the second picture we see who we’d assume as
the protagonist in a dark room and developing
photographs. It seems to be a girl and could be
someone close to them, but as it is a psychological
thriller, we could assume that the male protagonist
may be obsessive.
• In the 3rd picture we can see that the man is cutting
the skin off his fingers which is quite strange and
could be a form of self-harm. There are many
reasons why he could be doing this and he could
perhaps be distressed.
• Toward the end, the OST speeds up and this could
connotate that, even though it is just the
start, things are already to become intense.
3. The Memento
• The first thing we see is the credits and
under that, we see someone holding a
bloody picture.
• The tone of the non-diagetic sound
could connotate that something bad has
happened and there is something going
on.
• In the second picture we see a man with
blood on his face and by using a CU we
can see that there is a feeling of guilt on
his face and that he feels as though he
may have done wrong. Earlier, we saw
him with a camera and the polaroid and
he kept it which could connotate that he
is the cause for whatever has
happened, and that he is suspected of
having caused harm to the other person.
4. Psycho
• The cut or fragmentation in the word psycho could connotate chaos and disruption
• It could also show how confusion could be presented as the split could connotate
a split mind
• The title comes in from different directions and this could present two sides of a
person which is common in presentation from the director or editor or writer.
• The fragmented words could be symbolic as to whether or not a person has been
brainwashed or perhaps manipulated into doing something which they do not
wish to do or something they know has consequences but they go and do it
anyway.
• The black and white could connotate 2 main characters e.g. The white can
connotate the innocence of the main protagonist who we would assume as the
protagonist and the second protagonist to be of evil nature and rather dangerous.
