The shoulder joint is the most mobile joint in the body but also easily dislocates. A shoulder dislocation occurs when the ball of the upper arm bone comes partially or fully out of the socket, causing pain and weakness. Symptoms include swelling, numbness, and bruising. The doctor will examine the shoulder and order an X-ray to diagnose and place the bone back into joint with closed reduction. Rehabilitation after involves resting in a sling, icing the area, and starting gentle exercises to restore range of motion and strengthen muscles to prevent future dislocations. Surgery may be needed for chronic dislocations to repair torn ligaments.
