My brand entails my desire to reach out to at-risk young men and become a
positive influence in their lives. I feel a good portion of our society has written of a
segment our youth as unreachable and not worthy of trying to provide direction and
guidance.
I feel Proverbs 27:17, âAs iron sharpens iron, so does one man sharpen anotherâ
is the appropriate verse for my brand. It is my desire to use my interaction with my
students to build character, but also to gain personal growth myself.
My journey to desiring to become a mentor was not one that was easy. It took
quite some time for the Lord to convince me this should be my ministry. Years ago at
my church, I was asked to help with a group of teen boys that were their Sunday School
teacher a difficult time. I was very reluctant to help, but my pastor said the young men
needed a strong personality to help keep them focused and on task.
As time went on I started developing relationships with the men. There were
challenging times that made me question why I was doing this. But the reward of
watching them evolve from smart-alecky brats to young men with a purpose in life
outweighed the disappointments along the way.
While working on this project, Iâve learned branding oneself is not as easy of a
task as I thought it would be. Even though I had a clear idea of what I wanted my brand
to portray, I had a difficult time finding the right phrases and words to go along with the
appropriate pictures to convey my message.
This project also taught me how much power words and images have when they
are used in combination to deliver a message. I had to redesign my panels several

times to match the right images to the phrases I used to to create the most powerful
message I could.
