3. Does your final product reflect your
original intentions?
• Compare your planning/digital flat plans/
storyboards to your final product
4. Page 1
All the images had the same structure but the scale changes from the top
half having a small room to a rather large one and the lower has gone
from a market just to a random street so they do have the same premise
when it comes to location but the size and positioning says that there was
a huge divergence from the original idea.
5. Page 2
This page has the same problem as page 1 as in the size of the area and positioning
of the characters has changed but that can be placed to unavailable recourses or
images with a high enough quality to work with.
6. Page 3
This page from planning to production has been very consistent so this
definitely reflects the original idea.
7. Page 4
The finished product diverted drastically from the flat plan as the original idea was
to have Anne inside the house looking out to bluebeard but the perspective does a
180 so it still keeps to the original plan but just from a different angle.
8. Page 5
The positioning of the image is the same but the glaring difference in the final
product is that there isn’t a women at the bottom left hand side of the page
checking a dress apart from that the image does reflect the original plan.
9. Page 6
There is no consistency in the bottom half of the image as the positioning of the
characters and the style of the basement has been changed every stage of
development so it is obvious that it does not reflect the original plan.
The top half on the other hand has stayed nearly the same the style of the
background has changed.
10. Page 7
The differences between all of the plans and the final production it is pretty obvious that
the final product does not reflect the original idea.
11. Page 8
This page is an interesting case as the positioning and the style has changed are
the same, the only difference is the size of the location has changed so this
mostly reflects the original idea.
12. Page 9
The top half of the page reflects the original plan very well apart from the size of
the room but the dark colour scheme has been kept through the whole process.
The bottom half of the page keeps the same idea all the way through the
development up to production.
13. Page 10
All the way through all of the parts of the finished page reflect the original plan
the size of the throne room is different from the original that is again down to
available recourses.
14. How well have you constructed your
images?
• How well have you constructed your images?
You could talk about the overall visual
appearance and well as the use of texture and
colour.
15. Page 1
The top half of the page looks
very good as the dark colours
work with the mood and the
stone texture makes the area
look authentically old, I am
happy how the colours work
with each other.
The bottom half of the page
has some vibrant colours and
the textures on the buildings
really bring out the detail in
the buildings.
16. Page 2
The top half of the page shows
a lot more detail as the
background is larger this time
plus the contrast between the
characters and the background
works well to make them more
of the centre of attention.
The bottom half of the page is
just zoom in on that part of the
previous background but the
overall quality is still good and
the detail due to photo filter
which is fresco.
17. Page 3
The colours and texture are
blurry due to the images
resolution I wish I used an
image with higher resolution
so the textures would have
more clarity, leaves on the
tree are the highlight of this
image as they look irregular
enough to be in a fairy tale
story but still look like leaves.
18. Page 4
This image is a weird one as
the colours are a jarring
contrast from the source
image but that works in its
favour as it creates an
uneasiness in the reader.
19. Page 5
This image also has the problem of low
resolution lowering the quality of the
textures but at this point of the story the
off putting colour adds to the situation
as the reader is put on edge it also
brings Anne to the foreground.
20. Page 6
The top half of this page textures
really show to any kids reading that
this is a bad place to be, the dark
shades emphasis this brilliantly.
The bottom half of the page has a
sense of dread thanks to the dark
colours and textures clashing with
the golden sheen of the statues.
21. Page 7
The sharp yellows coming from the
pots and pans against the red wall
and cooker unsettle the reader and
the old stone texture for the floor
even though it is miniscule shows a
change in location.
22. Page 8
This massive room has great
detailing especially with the
items on the walls the only
down side is the chandelier
but the dark shades on the
walls, floor and the great
contrast of that with the
ceiling creates uneasiness.
23. Page 9
The top half of the page
encapsulates what Anne is
feeling her sadness and
loneliness reflected on the walls
but she prays hoping that she
can be saved this is reflected by
the only window with a ray of
light shining through.
As for the bottom half of the
image the dark colours reflects
what/who lurks at the bottom of
the stairs.
24. Page 10
Top of the page has a sense of
relief to it with the fire and the
archway being in a bright
colour.
The bottom left is the same as
before but the bright clothing
of the characters makes it
seem more happy even in this
dark place.
The bottom right is a different
story as you Anne in the
middle with all these dark
colours and shades with a
single light colour shows that
even it is a happy ending this
house still has a dark history to
it.
25. How well have you used text to anchor
your images
• You should talk about the combination of
words, images and text.
26. Page 1
When it comes to this the
text is in the perfect place
so it is a prominent part of
the page but it doesn’t
cover up all of the image
so the reader can take in
all of the detail.
27. Page 2
The text in these images act
like a collective speech bubble
for the characters especially in
the bottom half as the girls
are talking secretly.
28. Page 3
The text stands out a little too
much due to the resolution so
it ruins the feel of the image.
29. Page 4
In this one the text is well
placed almost looks like it
could be a house banner.
30. Page 5
This text act like a thought
for the character
explaining what is going
on in her head.
31. Page 6
This is the same as before the
is like a narration of what is
happening in her head and the
environment.
32. Page 7
This text covers most of the
details on the cooker and the
floor taking the jarring colours
away from the readers eye.
33. Page 8
The text in this image covers
most of the detail but
doesn’t completely
overpower it in this case it
works with the “caught in
the act” feel to the
situation.
34. Page 9
This text is simply placed in an
area that doesn’t take up too
detail and still adds to the overall
feel of the scene.
35. Page 10
This is the simplest form of
text placement and overall
these images suffer due to
those placements.
36. Is your product suitable for your
audience?
Proposal info
• Age: 3-6
• Gender: Both
• Class: Mid
• Adult interests: Looking for diverse stories that are not to graphic but still want to teach kids lessons
about life in an unconventional way.
Product suitability
The design of the background is pushing it when it comes to the dark shades and
jarring colours but this is meant to be a dark story toned down for toddlers.
Both genders will like this because males usually like darker colours that there is an
abundance of in the backgrounds while females at that age like bright colours.
Reading with normal books is becoming a rarity in this day and age but parents in the
mid and upper class are cultivating reading at a young age.
How this appeals to adults is that the art style isn’t boring to look at and if they know
the original story they can appreciate the changes therefore enjoying the story even
more.
37. What do you like/dislike about the
techniques you have used?
All of the images were created with the simple method of lasso tool, layer via copy
and Hue and saturation with a photo filter I mostly used fresco to get that nice dark
touch to the texture.
With the stone, gold, silver and wood texture I used create clipping mask when I
eventually got the perspective of the texture right.
The only thing I didn’t like about those method were that it got repetitive very quickly
so at some point started to slip up leaving gaps in textures ruining the overall quality.
But these techniques allow me to tweak specific areas.
38. What do you like/dislike about how
your final product looks?
Overall my favourite image is page 8 (on the
right) because of the slight details that the
fresco photo filter has brought out of the walls
and the floor texture and the ivory horns,
armours and weapons looking like they are 3d
with the Bevel and emboss + contour tool.
But it has the same problem as every other
image the text box its just there not fitting in
with the theme of the story or timeline.
39. Why did you include the content you
used?
• Fresco photo filter: To bring out the details in the areas also giving them
are dark tone.
• Helvetica text font: It suits the time and is the easiest to read out the
period friendly texts.
• Bevel and emboss + contour tool: This tool with the various items in the
different images when it actually works adds more detail with the bonus
of adding a 3D effect to it.
• Hue and saturation: This tool had 2 uses to get a specific colour to add
more to that texture and just make it stand out from the rest of the items.
• Stone, wood and precious metal textures: These textures were necessary
to add more detail and make certain aspects of an image more period
friendly.
40. What signs, symbols or codes have
your used in your work?
• Choices of colour, style, locations, character
design and tone all give additional meaning to
your work.
41. Characters: Lords and ladies
All of these character models are period friendly bluebeard I needed to look like a
lord so I had to find someone with some authority like the cane all I had to include
was the ring and it was perfect as for Claire and the others, Claire had to look
innocent so I went with the pink colours and made Anne was obviously so the reds
add to her more mature nature with the others is just went for appropriate colours
for the time as fashion in.
42. Characters: Soldiers
These are taken from genuine
sketches of Tudor period soldiers
or footmen all of the colours are
the same as the original images
all I properly changed was the
armour as it was grey and dull so
I raised the saturation on the
metals as these sort of stories
always have knights in “shining”
armour.
43. locations
As it was in the Tudor period I needed to find period
friendly locations castle basements, halls and gates
and big variety of other rooms to add diversity and
scale to the castle.
44. What representations can be found in
your work?
• How are men, women or children shown in
your work? Does your work feature different
ages, races, social groups or religions? Does a
lack of any variety of character types create its
own representation?
45. Gender, race and class representation
This is the classic story with a bad guy, damsel in distress and knights in
shining armour so females are meant to look innocent and weak but made
sure to show that Claire and Anne can think on their feet with Claire asking
bluebeard to go to the tower so she can get Anne's help.
Bluebeard is the antagonist so he meant to be 1 dimensional character who
does evil actions for the sake of being evil but I made seem a bit more
sympathetic giving him a reason for what he has done.
The lack of race and class representation is understandable for the time
period as there barely any coloured people in Britain and as for class the act
that the characters are all lords, ladies or look like they of noble decent as a
normal fairy tale would people of noble decent because children would love
to be them.
46. What style have you employed in your
products?
• Discuss influences/ existing products
• What visual style does your work have and
why did you choose it?
47. Art style
What is was trying to do was to get the
dark tones from skulduggery pleasant art
style because Bluebeard is originally a
REALLY dark story so I tried and partly
succeeded while style having a child
friendly atmosphere.
48. What were the strengths and weaknesses
of the pre-production and planning
• How did the planning and research help
• How well did you manage your time
• Reference specific examples
49. ResearchThis was pretty simple to honest it was just so difficult to find the
right assets to work with including the locations but the textures
were the easiest thing to work with as for example the hall and
tower in page 8 and 9.
50. Time management
To be honest I didn’t have a
timetable but I had a to use all
the time that available to like
going to college on Wednesdays
(my day off) to use the editing
software to get the work done
faster plus to add more details
for example the dining room in
the top half of page 1.
51. Historical and cultural context
• How does your work compare to what has
come before? What other similar products
have existed in the past? What current
products exist?
52. The version that I adapted my story from was the one that brothers Grimm
adapted from Charles Perrault's surviving version there were many
versions before that the dove, the robber bridegroom and fitchers bird just
to name a few all of these version have huge amounts of violence and
female subjugation in them that was done to the views on women in
stories at the time.
