Does your final product reflect your
original intentions?
• Compare your planning/digital flat plans/ storyboards to your final product
• I personally believe that my final product does reflect my original intentions. This is because I used my
original intentions (digital flat plans/storyboards) as a guide to begin with when creating the actual book
pages which made it easier to create the pages as I already had an idea of what I was going to create.
When creating my storyboards I was going in open minded to creating anything. The script I created
beforehand help me get a general idea of what I was going to make, after completing the storyboards it
became far easier to create everything else because I had a base line of how to shape objects and such. As
shown below the process took place from left to right, they all look very similar but the digital flat plan is a
tiny bit different with a more zoomed out image of the castle gate, you can still see that I took inspiration
from my storyboards when creating the final pages.
As seen below I did take lots of inspiration when creating my final pages from my digital flat plan and
storyboards. The images are set in the same terrain environment with mountains and hills with a forest. When
creating the final page I made sure to add more to the image then I did to the others.
These 3 pages are set differently to each other, the angles, characters, walls and more all change in
these shots. I still took inspiration from each of the images and tried to figure out ways I could display
all of the objects and characters. I didn’t finalize on an idea for the dining room so I ended up looking
at a real life castle dining room which helped give more inspiration which I also took ideas from.
How well have you constructed your
images?
• How well have you constructed your images? You could talk about the overall visual appearance and well as the
use of texture and colour.
• I believe I’ve constructed my pages efficiently, I constructed my images with mainly the Polygonal Lasso Tool
and the Shapes. I then coloured them with a colour overlay. After this I would layer the layers properly so I can
apply shadows and highlights. When adding the shadows and highlights I made sure the layers were in the right
spot otherwise the shadows behind the trees would show through with the object itself and it would look
messed up. I made sure in each image to include shadows to help create perspective in the image. If there were
no shadows it would look somewhat two dimensional. For the forest on the left, making the trees smaller as
they got further back also created perspective in this image and with the help of the shadows it makes it look a
lot more three dimensional. For the middle picture the wall is very detailed. I did this with a real image of a
wall, I downloaded the wall and used a cutout filter on the wall, this made it more cartoony and lesson detailed.
Once I placed the wall on the grey square I used the burn tool to create darker shadow.
For the inside images I tried to keep the same colour scheme throughout each of the pages. When creating
the middle image I had to find a real life picture of a medieval castle dining room to rotoscope and take ideas
from. This is because I couldn’t get the tables perspective to look right when creating the table. Rotoscoping
has also played a big part in the character creation. I found picture of different people and used their hair
and especially for the Werewolf. I had to find multiple picture of Werewolf drawings to get a final idea of
how I wanted to make him. Creating the furniture for the bedroom was also very hard, the bed especially.
Creating the bed required me to make so many different layers that it got complicated very quickly. I had to
change some layers colours different to create shadow effect before applying the burning and dodging tools
on Photoshop.
I think that the door way and bedroom pages don’t have enough props in each of the images. They both look
like they have large empty spaces and need to look more busy, if I have time I will go back and make some
additions to each of those images.
For the floor on the bedroom I also found a real life image of some tiles inside a castle. I decreased the
opacity of them and gave them a cutout filter to make the look more cartoony just like the castle wall page. I
also added shadows to bring out some of the tiles a bit.
How well have you used text to anchor
your images
• You should talk about the combination of words, images and text.
• I believe on my work I have chosen a suitable font for the type of fairy tale I am doing. For some pages I
have changed the colour of the font as it might be hard to see, as it contrasts with the background colours
a bit. The text used in each of these pages perfectly describe what’s taking place in each scene. I do think
some of the pages font should be changed to white as it doesn’t contrast well with the background making
it hard to read. This might be hard for a younger aged child to understand and see. The text placement in
each of these pages is also well placed. The text covers areas of the page that are very passive and have
nothing interesting or important being shown.
Is your product suitable for your
audience?• Reference your proposal
• Give an audience profile and describe suitability in reference to content
• As my story is a fairy tale, I have decided to focus upon a younger audience that are both genders. The
story before I tweaked the story and changed some of the characters had one violent scene that wouldn’t
be suitable for the younger ages and it would influence some sort of animal cruelty which is when the
Princess throws the frog at the wall in an attempt to kill him. I believe that my product is suitable for my
audience as it doesn’t contain and violent scenes. It contains one scary monster, the Werewolf. This
character might appeal as scary to the younger aged audience but I think it will be just fine. The story is
told in a very understandable way. The text itself is easy to read but has a hard word here and there. Most
children reading this book will have assistance from an elder when reading so they will be able to help the
young to understand certain words which may boost their vocabulary skills as they will have learnt a new
word in the process of reading my book.
What do you like/dislike about the
techniques you have used?
• Reference specific tools you used with images
• Firstly I like how I used shapes in my images to create the walls and the main objects. This made it easier to create a base shapes for
each page. Rotoscoping was also one of the main techniques I used when creating different options in the scene’s. It really helped when
creating the characters and props in each of the pages. I think the Rotoscoping tool is my favourite tool I’ve used so far on Photoshop as
it helps so much when creating books and more. The techniques/tools that came in as most useful was the Dodge and Burn tools. These
two tool as used for highlighting and shadowing different parts of a layer. I used the Burn tool the most to create shadows on objects
giving them a 3 dimensional effect that also showed the direction that light was coming from in the scene. The Dodge tool is for creating
highlights and I used this in the outside scenes on top of trees to create a glowing effect as if the sun was beaming down on the top of
them.
• Secondly I dislike how I created the male characters, I believe they don’t have enough detail on their bodies and they should be
recreated. I also think some pages look a bit too passive. The scenes that are more busy look better. (Busy = more objects and stuff
going on). When creating the characters I should have separated their arms into different layers so I could change the positions of their
body parts more. This would make the book less boring when being read.
What do you like/dislike about how
your final product looks?• I think my final product looks good. I think all of the objects in each of the pages are placed well and are
suitable in those locations. The angles in each scene are also very good especially the dinning table scene
where the perspective is from the far end of the table and it looks really nice. I think the product looks
okay for the amount of time spent on it. Although I think the final product looks good, I don’t think it’s
looks good enough. I could definitely change a lot on each scene by adding more detail and props to each
page. Especially the last page, the last page doesn’t have a very busy scene. Since the last page has the
worst anchorage out of all the pages I think it need to be improved the most. There needs to be other
people in the shot as it’s the only scene that shows the inside of the castle walls properly. Making more
characters that act as civilians would be good as it would make the scene look more busy. I could also add
3 more trees and more bushes. The floor is quite plane and should also have a hole or hatch somewhere
with. I could also add a water well into the background that would bring more props into the scene.
Overall I do like the colours I’ve used in each scene and the way I’ve placed the objects but I feel as there
can be more done for some pages. (These three pages are a good example of looking very passive).
Why did you include the content you
used?• Images, fonts, effects, colours
• Some content in each of the pages are needed for the story to progress for example, the middle page shown below has a
mask in. This mask was used to scare the Werewolf which made him fall of the bed turning him into a Prince. For the table
scene, props like plates, knifes and forks are used to fill in the table otherwise it would be a blank surface. The walls in that
scene also have shelving and overlapping wood textures, these were also used to fill in black spaces making the page look
less passive. For the first page with the mountains I tried to fill as much space as possible with terrain and shapes that I think
would look good in a story tale book. The pond on the right in that page is to fill in the space on the hill as it looked really
plane and boring but the forest on the left is supposed to be there for the story. The castle is also a main part of the story.
The colour’s used in this are done by personal preference. I think they suit the picture and are similar to the rest of the pages
throughout the book. The kings crown on the far left picture shows royalty in the image, same as the middle picture. The
fonts used in all the pages are the same but just different colours. White colour is used when the background of the scene is
too dark so the white contrasts well with the background. The black is the original colour of the text. The golden ball is also
one of the main props that’s used in the story. It’s basically what starts the story and brings it to life. Creating the golden ball
was easy.
What signs, symbols or codes have
your used in your work?
• Choices of colour, style, locations, character design and tone all give additional meaning to your work.
• After the Princess ran away from the Werewolf with her golden ball. The reader is left wondering what
happened to the Werewolf until the next scene is read. I’ve kept the colours in the book the same. They
are very plane colours but I believe they work well with the fairy tale type. On the last page, the Prince
and Princess are getting married in front of a church, the church is supposed to have a cross on the front
of the building. This symbolizes the Christianity religion. I avoided using this as it could create conflict
between the religions and it would influence that Christianity is the only religion and is the best religion.
• The castle on the first page symbolizes royalty since most kids know the Kings, Queens, Prince’s and
Princess’s live in castles.
• The mask the Princess wears on page 10 symbolizes fear. Fear is shown when the Werewolf gets scared by
the scary mask and proceeds to fall out of his bed in terror.
What representations can be found in
your work?
• How are men, women or children shown in your work? Does your work feature different ages, races, social groups or
religions? Does a lack of any variety of character types create its own representation?
• Characters: King, Princess, Werewolf and Prince. Throughout the story the King is only displayed in two scenes. In those
scenes the King is presented as royalty and very controlling over his daughters attitude. He’s represented as royalty because
of his crown. The same goes for the Prince. The Princess in the story is presented as a selfish ignorant character that only
wants what’s best for her. These are shown when she runs away from the promise she made with the Werewolf.
• The Werewolf in this story is discriminated against throughout the whole story. As the Werewolf is scary and ugly it’s
represented as a bad evil animal that only wants to eat people. But through the story the Werewolf doesn’t do anything
wrong and is hated by the Princess. This forces the audience to take the Princess’s side as the Werewolf is seen as a beast.
Near the end of the story when the Werewolf turns into the Prince the audience and discrimination changes and everyone
begins to like the Werewolf and feels sympathy for him even though he’s gone. The Prince is the Werewolf's aftermath, the
audience really like the Prince because he’s handsome and has hooked the Princess into falling in love with him. He is shown
as royalty and as a respectable. He is only featured in two pages of the book but every still likes him. All of these feelings
were intentionally made when I created this book.
What style have you employed in your
products?
• Discuss influences/ existing products
• What visual style does your work have and why did you choose it?
• My work is very cartoon like. It’s a very simple art style and doesn’t have much detail.
The images on the right are also cartoon style but they have a lot more detail as they
are out of actual books that are made to a professional standard. I believe they are
made in a similar way to how I made mine but they also drew some of there work so
that it was fully manipulate and new. I was influenced to make this story into a book
because as a child I read a lot of fairy tale books but never came across ’The Frog
Prince’. This allowed me to be more creative with my idea’s as I wasn’t tempted to steal
the ideas off other people’s work. When creating the art style for my work I did take
some time to look at other existing products like Goldilocks and the three Bears. I did
take some inspiration from their art work but did not copy anything because that
would basically be copyright. I chose to do the style I did because it was the simplest
style I could think of that I would be able to create and complete in the time frame I
was given. Layering different objects and props in my work also played a big part in
how I went about editing my work. If layers weren’t positioned right I wasn’t able to
give shadows that looked realistic.
What were the strengths and weaknesses
of the pre-production and planning
• How did the planning and research help
• The planning and research is the basis that created the whole of my story from the beginning. If I didn’t
have the planning and research I wouldn’t have made the story I did. The research was by far the most
helpful part of the project. It let me look into different story's and folk tales and showed me existing
products approach to creating books out of fairy tales and folk tales. It also showed me what style I could
create my book in and how I can place the text and what font to use. When researching I took different
stories into account and looked at what was the most and least common type of bool. These factors
helped me decide that ’The Frog Prince’ was the book I wanted to create.
• How well did you manage your time
• I believe that I didn’t manage my time very well. Some lessons I wasted time creating background that I
though would work well but didn’t in the end resulting in me losing time. Sometimes I would spend too
long on one background and less time on the other. By the end of the background creation I didn’t have
enough time to create detailed characters resulting in the characters looking worse then the background.
When creating the characters I started with the Werewolf and ended up again spending more time on him
then I did on the other characters.
• By the end of the two weeks I don’t think I had accomplished what I wanted to accomplish overall. Now
that I have more time to improve my work I can try to fix and improve the areas that I hadn’t put much
time into like the characters.
Historical and cultural context
• How does your work compare to what has come before? What other similar products have existed in the
past? What current products exist?
• Currently there are multiple types of ’The Frog Prince’ with different stories. They all have the same base
story but either end in a different way or have a different animal instead of a frog. My story has a different
animal (Werewolf) and a similar ending. The locations are all completely new and original to my creation.
The characters are all also my own and I created them fully myself. I am going to compare this story I found
online and my own creation. First of the scenery used in both books. The StoryJumper book has a very
simple background and the sun, characters and objects are the only aspects that change throughout the
book, I think my book has better scenes as they anchor the text really well. They’re also different from one
another. If the background scenes are all the same it makes the book boring and less interesting since the
younger generation usually read the book to see the pictures inside. The difference between the text is
that my book contains a lot more text then the StoryJumper book. They use eight pages and I used twelve
to create my book. One big difference between my book and their book is that they have used a front and
back cover for theirs and I haven’t used any. The characters features like arms and legs all stay the same
throughout the story and don’t move were as mine do. The princess’s arms change from back to front. The
Werewolf also changes his arms around in different scenes. The font they have used is a lot more basic
then mine and easier to read but it’s very boring. The font I used has lots of style and looks really fancy. It
suites the types of images presented and also helps with the royal theme I have gone for.

Peer Feedback
• Summarise peer feedback and discuss
– Responses you agree with
– I agree with all the responses, the talk about factors that I myself was thinking of
doing when I was creating the book pages. The response I agree with the most is
the one about giving other objects texture instead of plain colour. I mainly focused
upon giving the castle wall in the close up page texture. This is because if the wall
was plain it would make the page extremely boring since the wall has no texture
and it’s one solid colour but giving it a texture brings in shadows and highlights
making it less boring and more professional.
– I also agree with the King’s detail. When I was creating the King it was a last second
creation as I had already created the other characters. I spent too much time on
the other characters, this left me less time to work on the King. I am going to go
back to the King and I’m going to give him more detail because he looks very
unfinished.
– For the textures they have suggested that I could create my own textures and the
use those over the top of some shapes, disagree with this because making textures
is hard as I don’t have that much knowledge in that area of expertise. I think
getting textures from online sources is a lot better because you can manipulate the
textures to make the look cartoony and less original to the source.

Digital graphics evaluation

  • 2. Use this template to help you evaluate your project. You should give specific details about your work. You should provide both written and visual examples to explain your project. You should find areas to praise in your work. Be specific about why you think they are good or why you are proud of them. You should also find areas that could be improved. Look for areas that you could make better if you went back to them. Be specific about what you would improve. Add additional slides as you need to. Don’t be restricted by what is here. Any blank slides should be deleted before submission.
  • 3. Does your final product reflect your original intentions? • Compare your planning/digital flat plans/ storyboards to your final product • I personally believe that my final product does reflect my original intentions. This is because I used my original intentions (digital flat plans/storyboards) as a guide to begin with when creating the actual book pages which made it easier to create the pages as I already had an idea of what I was going to create. When creating my storyboards I was going in open minded to creating anything. The script I created beforehand help me get a general idea of what I was going to make, after completing the storyboards it became far easier to create everything else because I had a base line of how to shape objects and such. As shown below the process took place from left to right, they all look very similar but the digital flat plan is a tiny bit different with a more zoomed out image of the castle gate, you can still see that I took inspiration from my storyboards when creating the final pages.
  • 4. As seen below I did take lots of inspiration when creating my final pages from my digital flat plan and storyboards. The images are set in the same terrain environment with mountains and hills with a forest. When creating the final page I made sure to add more to the image then I did to the others. These 3 pages are set differently to each other, the angles, characters, walls and more all change in these shots. I still took inspiration from each of the images and tried to figure out ways I could display all of the objects and characters. I didn’t finalize on an idea for the dining room so I ended up looking at a real life castle dining room which helped give more inspiration which I also took ideas from.
  • 5. How well have you constructed your images? • How well have you constructed your images? You could talk about the overall visual appearance and well as the use of texture and colour. • I believe I’ve constructed my pages efficiently, I constructed my images with mainly the Polygonal Lasso Tool and the Shapes. I then coloured them with a colour overlay. After this I would layer the layers properly so I can apply shadows and highlights. When adding the shadows and highlights I made sure the layers were in the right spot otherwise the shadows behind the trees would show through with the object itself and it would look messed up. I made sure in each image to include shadows to help create perspective in the image. If there were no shadows it would look somewhat two dimensional. For the forest on the left, making the trees smaller as they got further back also created perspective in this image and with the help of the shadows it makes it look a lot more three dimensional. For the middle picture the wall is very detailed. I did this with a real image of a wall, I downloaded the wall and used a cutout filter on the wall, this made it more cartoony and lesson detailed. Once I placed the wall on the grey square I used the burn tool to create darker shadow.
  • 6. For the inside images I tried to keep the same colour scheme throughout each of the pages. When creating the middle image I had to find a real life picture of a medieval castle dining room to rotoscope and take ideas from. This is because I couldn’t get the tables perspective to look right when creating the table. Rotoscoping has also played a big part in the character creation. I found picture of different people and used their hair and especially for the Werewolf. I had to find multiple picture of Werewolf drawings to get a final idea of how I wanted to make him. Creating the furniture for the bedroom was also very hard, the bed especially. Creating the bed required me to make so many different layers that it got complicated very quickly. I had to change some layers colours different to create shadow effect before applying the burning and dodging tools on Photoshop. I think that the door way and bedroom pages don’t have enough props in each of the images. They both look like they have large empty spaces and need to look more busy, if I have time I will go back and make some additions to each of those images. For the floor on the bedroom I also found a real life image of some tiles inside a castle. I decreased the opacity of them and gave them a cutout filter to make the look more cartoony just like the castle wall page. I also added shadows to bring out some of the tiles a bit.
  • 7. How well have you used text to anchor your images • You should talk about the combination of words, images and text. • I believe on my work I have chosen a suitable font for the type of fairy tale I am doing. For some pages I have changed the colour of the font as it might be hard to see, as it contrasts with the background colours a bit. The text used in each of these pages perfectly describe what’s taking place in each scene. I do think some of the pages font should be changed to white as it doesn’t contrast well with the background making it hard to read. This might be hard for a younger aged child to understand and see. The text placement in each of these pages is also well placed. The text covers areas of the page that are very passive and have nothing interesting or important being shown.
  • 8. Is your product suitable for your audience?• Reference your proposal • Give an audience profile and describe suitability in reference to content • As my story is a fairy tale, I have decided to focus upon a younger audience that are both genders. The story before I tweaked the story and changed some of the characters had one violent scene that wouldn’t be suitable for the younger ages and it would influence some sort of animal cruelty which is when the Princess throws the frog at the wall in an attempt to kill him. I believe that my product is suitable for my audience as it doesn’t contain and violent scenes. It contains one scary monster, the Werewolf. This character might appeal as scary to the younger aged audience but I think it will be just fine. The story is told in a very understandable way. The text itself is easy to read but has a hard word here and there. Most children reading this book will have assistance from an elder when reading so they will be able to help the young to understand certain words which may boost their vocabulary skills as they will have learnt a new word in the process of reading my book.
  • 9. What do you like/dislike about the techniques you have used? • Reference specific tools you used with images • Firstly I like how I used shapes in my images to create the walls and the main objects. This made it easier to create a base shapes for each page. Rotoscoping was also one of the main techniques I used when creating different options in the scene’s. It really helped when creating the characters and props in each of the pages. I think the Rotoscoping tool is my favourite tool I’ve used so far on Photoshop as it helps so much when creating books and more. The techniques/tools that came in as most useful was the Dodge and Burn tools. These two tool as used for highlighting and shadowing different parts of a layer. I used the Burn tool the most to create shadows on objects giving them a 3 dimensional effect that also showed the direction that light was coming from in the scene. The Dodge tool is for creating highlights and I used this in the outside scenes on top of trees to create a glowing effect as if the sun was beaming down on the top of them. • Secondly I dislike how I created the male characters, I believe they don’t have enough detail on their bodies and they should be recreated. I also think some pages look a bit too passive. The scenes that are more busy look better. (Busy = more objects and stuff going on). When creating the characters I should have separated their arms into different layers so I could change the positions of their body parts more. This would make the book less boring when being read.
  • 10. What do you like/dislike about how your final product looks?• I think my final product looks good. I think all of the objects in each of the pages are placed well and are suitable in those locations. The angles in each scene are also very good especially the dinning table scene where the perspective is from the far end of the table and it looks really nice. I think the product looks okay for the amount of time spent on it. Although I think the final product looks good, I don’t think it’s looks good enough. I could definitely change a lot on each scene by adding more detail and props to each page. Especially the last page, the last page doesn’t have a very busy scene. Since the last page has the worst anchorage out of all the pages I think it need to be improved the most. There needs to be other people in the shot as it’s the only scene that shows the inside of the castle walls properly. Making more characters that act as civilians would be good as it would make the scene look more busy. I could also add 3 more trees and more bushes. The floor is quite plane and should also have a hole or hatch somewhere with. I could also add a water well into the background that would bring more props into the scene. Overall I do like the colours I’ve used in each scene and the way I’ve placed the objects but I feel as there can be more done for some pages. (These three pages are a good example of looking very passive).
  • 11. Why did you include the content you used?• Images, fonts, effects, colours • Some content in each of the pages are needed for the story to progress for example, the middle page shown below has a mask in. This mask was used to scare the Werewolf which made him fall of the bed turning him into a Prince. For the table scene, props like plates, knifes and forks are used to fill in the table otherwise it would be a blank surface. The walls in that scene also have shelving and overlapping wood textures, these were also used to fill in black spaces making the page look less passive. For the first page with the mountains I tried to fill as much space as possible with terrain and shapes that I think would look good in a story tale book. The pond on the right in that page is to fill in the space on the hill as it looked really plane and boring but the forest on the left is supposed to be there for the story. The castle is also a main part of the story. The colour’s used in this are done by personal preference. I think they suit the picture and are similar to the rest of the pages throughout the book. The kings crown on the far left picture shows royalty in the image, same as the middle picture. The fonts used in all the pages are the same but just different colours. White colour is used when the background of the scene is too dark so the white contrasts well with the background. The black is the original colour of the text. The golden ball is also one of the main props that’s used in the story. It’s basically what starts the story and brings it to life. Creating the golden ball was easy.
  • 12. What signs, symbols or codes have your used in your work? • Choices of colour, style, locations, character design and tone all give additional meaning to your work. • After the Princess ran away from the Werewolf with her golden ball. The reader is left wondering what happened to the Werewolf until the next scene is read. I’ve kept the colours in the book the same. They are very plane colours but I believe they work well with the fairy tale type. On the last page, the Prince and Princess are getting married in front of a church, the church is supposed to have a cross on the front of the building. This symbolizes the Christianity religion. I avoided using this as it could create conflict between the religions and it would influence that Christianity is the only religion and is the best religion. • The castle on the first page symbolizes royalty since most kids know the Kings, Queens, Prince’s and Princess’s live in castles. • The mask the Princess wears on page 10 symbolizes fear. Fear is shown when the Werewolf gets scared by the scary mask and proceeds to fall out of his bed in terror.
  • 13. What representations can be found in your work? • How are men, women or children shown in your work? Does your work feature different ages, races, social groups or religions? Does a lack of any variety of character types create its own representation? • Characters: King, Princess, Werewolf and Prince. Throughout the story the King is only displayed in two scenes. In those scenes the King is presented as royalty and very controlling over his daughters attitude. He’s represented as royalty because of his crown. The same goes for the Prince. The Princess in the story is presented as a selfish ignorant character that only wants what’s best for her. These are shown when she runs away from the promise she made with the Werewolf. • The Werewolf in this story is discriminated against throughout the whole story. As the Werewolf is scary and ugly it’s represented as a bad evil animal that only wants to eat people. But through the story the Werewolf doesn’t do anything wrong and is hated by the Princess. This forces the audience to take the Princess’s side as the Werewolf is seen as a beast. Near the end of the story when the Werewolf turns into the Prince the audience and discrimination changes and everyone begins to like the Werewolf and feels sympathy for him even though he’s gone. The Prince is the Werewolf's aftermath, the audience really like the Prince because he’s handsome and has hooked the Princess into falling in love with him. He is shown as royalty and as a respectable. He is only featured in two pages of the book but every still likes him. All of these feelings were intentionally made when I created this book.
  • 14. What style have you employed in your products? • Discuss influences/ existing products • What visual style does your work have and why did you choose it? • My work is very cartoon like. It’s a very simple art style and doesn’t have much detail. The images on the right are also cartoon style but they have a lot more detail as they are out of actual books that are made to a professional standard. I believe they are made in a similar way to how I made mine but they also drew some of there work so that it was fully manipulate and new. I was influenced to make this story into a book because as a child I read a lot of fairy tale books but never came across ’The Frog Prince’. This allowed me to be more creative with my idea’s as I wasn’t tempted to steal the ideas off other people’s work. When creating the art style for my work I did take some time to look at other existing products like Goldilocks and the three Bears. I did take some inspiration from their art work but did not copy anything because that would basically be copyright. I chose to do the style I did because it was the simplest style I could think of that I would be able to create and complete in the time frame I was given. Layering different objects and props in my work also played a big part in how I went about editing my work. If layers weren’t positioned right I wasn’t able to give shadows that looked realistic.
  • 15. What were the strengths and weaknesses of the pre-production and planning • How did the planning and research help • The planning and research is the basis that created the whole of my story from the beginning. If I didn’t have the planning and research I wouldn’t have made the story I did. The research was by far the most helpful part of the project. It let me look into different story's and folk tales and showed me existing products approach to creating books out of fairy tales and folk tales. It also showed me what style I could create my book in and how I can place the text and what font to use. When researching I took different stories into account and looked at what was the most and least common type of bool. These factors helped me decide that ’The Frog Prince’ was the book I wanted to create. • How well did you manage your time • I believe that I didn’t manage my time very well. Some lessons I wasted time creating background that I though would work well but didn’t in the end resulting in me losing time. Sometimes I would spend too long on one background and less time on the other. By the end of the background creation I didn’t have enough time to create detailed characters resulting in the characters looking worse then the background. When creating the characters I started with the Werewolf and ended up again spending more time on him then I did on the other characters. • By the end of the two weeks I don’t think I had accomplished what I wanted to accomplish overall. Now that I have more time to improve my work I can try to fix and improve the areas that I hadn’t put much time into like the characters.
  • 16. Historical and cultural context • How does your work compare to what has come before? What other similar products have existed in the past? What current products exist? • Currently there are multiple types of ’The Frog Prince’ with different stories. They all have the same base story but either end in a different way or have a different animal instead of a frog. My story has a different animal (Werewolf) and a similar ending. The locations are all completely new and original to my creation. The characters are all also my own and I created them fully myself. I am going to compare this story I found online and my own creation. First of the scenery used in both books. The StoryJumper book has a very simple background and the sun, characters and objects are the only aspects that change throughout the book, I think my book has better scenes as they anchor the text really well. They’re also different from one another. If the background scenes are all the same it makes the book boring and less interesting since the younger generation usually read the book to see the pictures inside. The difference between the text is that my book contains a lot more text then the StoryJumper book. They use eight pages and I used twelve to create my book. One big difference between my book and their book is that they have used a front and back cover for theirs and I haven’t used any. The characters features like arms and legs all stay the same throughout the story and don’t move were as mine do. The princess’s arms change from back to front. The Werewolf also changes his arms around in different scenes. The font they have used is a lot more basic then mine and easier to read but it’s very boring. The font I used has lots of style and looks really fancy. It suites the types of images presented and also helps with the royal theme I have gone for. http://www.storyjumper.com/book/index/14451892/The-Frog-Prince
  • 17. Peer Feedback • Summarise peer feedback and discuss – Responses you agree with – I agree with all the responses, the talk about factors that I myself was thinking of doing when I was creating the book pages. The response I agree with the most is the one about giving other objects texture instead of plain colour. I mainly focused upon giving the castle wall in the close up page texture. This is because if the wall was plain it would make the page extremely boring since the wall has no texture and it’s one solid colour but giving it a texture brings in shadows and highlights making it less boring and more professional. – I also agree with the King’s detail. When I was creating the King it was a last second creation as I had already created the other characters. I spent too much time on the other characters, this left me less time to work on the King. I am going to go back to the King and I’m going to give him more detail because he looks very unfinished. – For the textures they have suggested that I could create my own textures and the use those over the top of some shapes, disagree with this because making textures is hard as I don’t have that much knowledge in that area of expertise. I think getting textures from online sources is a lot better because you can manipulate the textures to make the look cartoony and less original to the source.
