2. How does your media product
represent particular social groups?
Representation – Social Norms

These are photographs that were to be potentially used in my final product, the poses the
model is using is a good indicator of the personality of the character, the casual laid back feel of
the character can give an idea of how the character deviates from the strict rules of society and
how he takes things into his own hands and is rebellious against the social rules. He goes against
conventions of society and how he only in one photo, looks into the camera, this shows his
rebellious side and how even when he looks at the camera he does not smile, he only stares
blankly, as to make that picture rubbish and to make the ‘real’ images the ones that count. The
model is also a young adult/teen, this is a near reflection of the age of my potential consumers,
this maybe makes the model admirable to men, they want to be like the model, or something
women can look to and admire in a sexual way, my magazine is more heterosexual although
some features can be seen as homosexual or bi-sexual, for instance i have not made the model
sexualised with a female, he is just alone, this can be admired (sexually) by both males and
females or admired (physical aspiration) by again both males and females.
Representation
     • My male model is portrayed in a very subdued
manner although his body language suggests a sense
of boredom and rebel, this fits my magazine
perfectly as I wanted the magazine to feel like it
presents the rebellious aspect of rock, featured in
the styles of bands such as of mice and men and
green day and how they break the conventions of
social norm on stage and within music videos
however I wanted to rid the stereotype of rock being
about death and Satan and how a lot of rock songs
relate to love or fighting depression etc, within songs
such as ‘Second and Sebring’ and ‘wake me up when
September ends’ therefore showing how rock can be
life saving as well as ‘heavy’ and rebellious, with my
models body language I feel i portrayed this well.
     • This fighting of the stereotype and clash of rebellion
is likely to appeal to my target audience, the people
who are likely to buy the magazine are
predominantly white teens of both genders although
i am not excluding other races as i want to promote
equality, this imagery of the character is likely to
appeal anyone interested in rock as it shows a
naturalistic feel that anyone can relate to.
Representation - Race

• With rock being a predominantly white male scene i wanted to
eradicate any fear of any other ethnic or sexual orientation groups
joining in to rock, however i have used a white male as my model
which is the general rock feature i wanted to support diversity, with
the emergence of multi race bands such as ‘skindred’ i do not feel
that rock will be predominantly white in the future, and so even
though i have used a white male model and didn't feature any other
race i have not aimed my magazine at this audience, it is open for
equality and features inside will be friendly to all races and
  sexualities.
Representation - Age

The age group i have represented in the final product totally coincides with the social stereotype
of rock, or at least the genres of rock generally featured in the magazine (hardcore, metalcore,
metal, punk) excluding rock generalised to the older generation (soft rock, ballad rock etc.)
My magazine fits in with rock styles of going against the social conventions and rebelling against
society, it also fits in with the youth style of rock and the general appearance of ‘core’ rock
music (ripped skinny jeans, beanies, etc.) this care free attitude of today’s generation conforms
to the stereotype of being outland-ish and young (15-25) which is the approx age range for my
product.
Representation- Social Class
• My representation of social class fits in with the
general style of modern rock as being middle-class, as
rock has moved out of the working class scene (more
  so hip-hop/rap now)
• As demographics of my audience suggest, we cannot
define a social class to the audience (15-25) as most
have not started a career yet and can not be defined by
their job role, so therefore we must look at their
parents social class, which forms to middle class, a
class with not so much money to be kept in line (upper
class) and not so little money so they cannot make a
rebellion (as in clothes and music style rather than an
  actual rebellion)
Representation- Social Class
• There are some generalisations we can draw from working and
  middle class
• Working class tends to be people on lower income, lower standard
of education, lower life expectancy, likely to live in council houses or
flats, live in worse kept areas, have families earlier, single parent
households, more likely to be considered ‘poor’ more likely to have
a ‘manual’ labour job or be involved in crime.
• In contrast to this however middle class families tend to have higher
income, better education, higher life expectancy, likely to have their
own home, have families later in life, stable families, better
jobs, without as much manual labour (office, indoor jobs) and less
likely to be involved in crime.
• People within my target generally conform to a standard middle
class background, as mentioned before they will have a stable
amount of income which people can use to purchase AMPED mag!
• Consumers of AMPED would use buying the product as a source of
personal identity, not only being seen with the magazine as this
would create acceptance into an implicit group, people who bought
the magazine and therefore share similar views. But the way models
in the magazine act and behave, within the photographic imagery
where the model is being laid back and clearly not bothered by the
photo shoot, this would then influence the actions of readers of
    AMPED.
• Also within the magazine we have the aspect of social interaction, the
way the model is presenting himself, open towards the camera offers
a friendly aura around the character, thus influencing the readers, if
they are shy and subdued to become more confident and open, just
like the model seen in the magazine. And again with the poster image
used at the bottom of my front cover, it shows a live event, where the
artist is performing and this then shows how the performance is
bringing people together and how the rock community brings
together interaction with people with similar views.
• Again as before, the use of AMPED as source of social identity and
being part of implicit groups with others who are also part of the
group, it gives them a sense of security and how they can feel
important and part of a community, as well as this consumers may be
attracted to the casual entertainment source of AMPED as a way to
escape problem of reality and drift off into reading about the things
they love as a community and see how they influence rock music
personally as more and more artists make music to impress them as
    part of the rock group.
