Microbes live all over and inside our bodies in complex communities known as the human microbiome. For over a century, germ theory has helped us understand infectious diseases by viewing microbes as pathogens. However, new findings in microbiome science show that most microbes in our bodies are not harmful and instead have important and diverse roles in human health and development.
