What Is Academic Integrity?
What Is Academic Integrity?
 “The free exchange of ideas depends on
the participants' trust that they will be
given credit for their work.”
 “The free exchange of ideas also
depends on the participants' trust that
others' work is their own and that it was
done and is being reported honestly”
Academic Misconduct
Academic Misconduct
 The Code of Student Conduct identifies
three areas of behavior that constitute
academic misconduct:
○ Cheating is the giving, taking, or presenting of
information or material by a student that
unethically or fraudulently aids oneself or another
person on any work which is to be considered in
the determination of a grade.
○ Plagiarism is the use or close imitation of the
language and thoughts of another and the
representation of the other’s work as their own.
○ Aiding and Abetting others to cheat or plagiarize
is as detrimental to the scholarly community as
engaging in the acts themselves.
CoSC, sec 8
Code of Student Conduct
8.4
 “The act of submitting work for
evaluation or to meet a requirement is
regarded as assurance that the work is
the result of the student's own thought
and study, produced without assistance,
and stated in that student's own words,
except as quotation marks, references,
or footnotes acknowledge the use of
other sources.”
Consequences
Consequences
 A student found responsible for academic
misconduct will usually be placed on academic
integrity probation for the remainder of the student’s
academic career. In addition, one or more of the
sanctions listed below may be imposed.
 Reduction in Grade
 No Credit
 Educational Exercises
 Suspension
 Expulsion
 Required counseling
 Research and reflective writing assignments
 Other non-academic sanctions listed in the Code.
My Expectations
 Attribution
 Anything that we borrow from another source requires some
type of citation.
○ Paraphrase
○ Quotes
○ Yourself
 Collaboration
 We will collaborate a great deal in class, but I expect all major
assignments (unless otherwise specified) to be completed by a
single student.
 Originality
 Even with citation, it is not enough to simply parrot what others
have said. I expect your ideas to be yours, and yours alone, no
matter how crazy.
 Sincere Effort
 Do your best. I will assume you are innocent until I have reason
to believe otherwise. Be diligent, be forthcoming.
Eat All The Brains You Want . .
