Magnet Notes
1. Magnetism Notes
1/5/10
• Magnet – Any material that attracts iron
• Poles – each magnet has two ends, north & south
o Unlike = attract
o Alike = repel
• Force – The attraction or repulsion of poles
• Field – Area around a magnet
o Single – p. 11 (Draw)
o Combined – p. 11 (Draw)
1/8/10
• Atom – is the smallest particle of an element.
• Element – is one of about 100 basic substances that make up all
matter.
Structure of an Atom
o Proton – is a particle that carries a positive charge.
o Neutron – is a particle that does not carry a charge.
o Electron – is a particle that carries a negative charge.
Electron Spin
• A spinning electron produces a magnetic field that makes the
electron behave like a tiny magnet in an atom.
• In most atoms, electrons form pairs that spin in opposite
directions. Opposite spins produce opposite magnetic fields that
cancel. Therefore, most atoms have weak magnetic properties.
But some atoms contain elections that are not paired. These
atoms tend to have strong magnetic properties.
