CODE OF ETHICS FOR
PROFESSIONAL TEACHERS
Dr. Jagannath K. Dange
Professor and Chairman
P.G. Department of Education
Kuvempu University
Shankaraghatta.
“No society or Nation will grow above the
level of Teachers”
Teaching Profession is both an Art and a
Science. (ಸ್ರಜನಾತ್ಮಕತೆ ಮತ್ತು ವ್ಯವ್ಸ್ಥಿತ್ವಾಗಿ)
Like an artist, a good teacher makes decisions
from both a technical and a creative
perspective.
Teachers develop their science by using
carefully planned fine-tuned lesson that
reflect an understanding of many different
teaching techniques.

• Ethics is the study of right and wrong,
duties and obligations(ನಿರ್ಬಂಧ,ಬಾಧಯತೆ).
• Ethics involves critical reflection on
morality, including the ability to make
choices between values and the
examination of the moral dimensions of
relationships.
PROFESSIONAL ETHICS
The moral commitments of a profession ವ್ರತ್ತು ರ್ದ್ದತೆ
that:
• involve moral reflection that extends and
enhances the personal morality practitioners
bring to their work,
• concern actions of right and wrong in the
workplace, and
• help individuals resolve moral dilemmas they
encounter in their work.
• What is a Profession?
"Profess": a public declaration (ಸಾವ್ಬಜನಿಕ ಘೊಷಣೆಗಳು), a
commitment-ರ್ದ್ದತೆ (vows-ಪ್ರಮಾಣಗಳು) to serve for a good end.
• Professional Codes of Ethics
A code of ethics...prescribes how professionals are to pursue
their common ideal (ಸಾವ್ಬತ್ತರಕ ಆದ್ರ್ಬಗಳು)so that each may do
the best.
A professional code of ethics outlines teachers’ primary
responsibilities to their students and defines their role in a
student’s life.
Teachers/ Educators must demonstrate 1.impartiality,
2.integrity, and 3.ethical behavior in the classroom, whether
virtual or in-person, and in their conduct with parents and co-
workers.
National Board for Professional Teaching Standards
(NBPTS)-USA
The NBPTS (2010) has established both content and
instructional standards for the profession, which are based
on the following five “core propositions”.
1. Teachers are committed to students and their learning.
2. Teachers know the subjects they teach and how to teach
those subjects to student.
3. Teachers are responsible for managing and monitoring
student learning.
4. Teachers think systematically about their practice and
learn from experience.
5. Teachers are members of learning communities.
• Obtaining NBPTS certifications is a rigorous
endeavor, and most states add a hand-some yearly
stipend to teachers’ salaries for those who pass
master.
• Research study shows that teachers who were
NBPTS certified tended to be more effective in
terms of student achievement (Vandervoort, Amrein
Beardsley, and Berliner 2004).
• “code of Ethics” sponsored by the Association of
American Educators (2010).
Their four basic principles are summarized in the
follow.
I. Ethical conduct toward students
II.Ethical conduct toward practice and performance.
III.Ethical conduct toward professional colleagues.
IV.Ethical conduct toward parents and community.
NEP -2020
"A common guiding set of National
Professional Standards for Teachers (NPST)
will be developed by 2022, by
the National Council for Teacher Education in
consultation with NCERT and coordinated by
the SCERTs, teachers from across levels and
regions, expert organisations
in teacher preparation and development.

  • 1. CODE OF ETHICS FOR PROFESSIONAL TEACHERS Dr. Jagannath K. Dange Professor and Chairman P.G. Department of Education Kuvempu University Shankaraghatta.
  • 2. “No society or Nation will grow above the level of Teachers”
  • 3. Teaching Profession is both an Art and a Science. (ಸ್ರಜನಾತ್ಮಕತೆ ಮತ್ತು ವ್ಯವ್ಸ್ಥಿತ್ವಾಗಿ) Like an artist, a good teacher makes decisions from both a technical and a creative perspective. Teachers develop their science by using carefully planned fine-tuned lesson that reflect an understanding of many different teaching techniques.
  • 4. CODE OF ETHICS FOR PROFESSIONAL TEACHERS ಶಿಕ್ಷಕರ ವ್ರತ್ತಿ ಸಂಹಿತೆ • Guide. • Friend • Philosopher • Mentor • Parent • Counsellor and • Facilitator (ಕಲಿಕೆಗೆ, ಅಭಿವ್ಯಕ್ತುಗೆ ಅನತವ್ು ಮಾಡಿಕೆೊಡತವ್)
  • 5. • Ethics is the study of right and wrong, duties and obligations(ನಿರ್ಬಂಧ,ಬಾಧಯತೆ). • Ethics involves critical reflection on morality, including the ability to make choices between values and the examination of the moral dimensions of relationships.
  • 6. PROFESSIONAL ETHICS The moral commitments of a profession ವ್ರತ್ತು ರ್ದ್ದತೆ that: • involve moral reflection that extends and enhances the personal morality practitioners bring to their work, • concern actions of right and wrong in the workplace, and • help individuals resolve moral dilemmas they encounter in their work.
  • 7. • What is a Profession? "Profess": a public declaration (ಸಾವ್ಬಜನಿಕ ಘೊಷಣೆಗಳು), a commitment-ರ್ದ್ದತೆ (vows-ಪ್ರಮಾಣಗಳು) to serve for a good end. • Professional Codes of Ethics A code of ethics...prescribes how professionals are to pursue their common ideal (ಸಾವ್ಬತ್ತರಕ ಆದ್ರ್ಬಗಳು)so that each may do the best. A professional code of ethics outlines teachers’ primary responsibilities to their students and defines their role in a student’s life. Teachers/ Educators must demonstrate 1.impartiality, 2.integrity, and 3.ethical behavior in the classroom, whether virtual or in-person, and in their conduct with parents and co- workers.
