avoid discussing. We know what guns do, but fail to make any change so we can prevent them
falling into the wrong hands. We are taught how to prepare for a shooting, living in fear because of

and have also implemented tactics to lower crime. By using programs to help the youth instead of
establishing new legislation, people will not argue that their rights in the second amendment are
being tarnished. Our second amendment gives an American citizen the right to bear arms. This
means that Americans may obtain a gun. If the United States' Congress created legislation to limit
the number of guns you may obtain or one that does not allow certain people to obtain guns, people
would argue that it goes against their second amendment right. Therefore, the United States'
Constitution prohibits restrictions on guns and firearms by ensuring an individual right.

There are already many laws barring citizens from purchasing weapons, as there should be. Since
those people are obviously not law abiding citizens, they shouldn't have the right or be trusted to use
a deadly weapon. That is why when you purchase a gun, it is the law that you must be screened by

shooting, there had been another mass attack in America. On June 12, 2016, Omar Mateen opened

people and injure almost 500 in only 10 to 15 minutes, resulting in the deadliest mass shooting in
modern US history. Unfortunately, these types of mass shootings happen all across the United States
and are becoming fairly common now. As shootings happen more and more, and gun death rates
rise, gun control has become a controversial and highly debated issue in America. People in favor of
gun control argue that stricter laws are needed to make it harder for criminals to obtain weapons. On
the other hand, others argue that the Second Amendment gives us the right to have firearms to
protect themselves. Gun control laws should be stricter to help significantly decrease the number of
gun related deaths, making a safer environment without infringing the Second Amendment.

This year, almost every other day, whenever I turned the news channel on, I'd always hear about a
shooting. Whether it was a shooting in a small neighborhood of New Jersey or the mass shooting in
Las Vegas, all of them would bring the same question to my mind: are guns really protecting
people? Many people in this country believe that they have the right to own a gun to protect
themselves and their loved ones, and I understand where they are coming from because I'd want to

Founding generation believed that governments are prone to use soldiers to oppress the people"
(Lund), which suggests that the one of the reasons behind forming a provision for people to bear
arms was to safeguard the people if there was ever a chance of federal oppression on them, a lesson
America learned with their encounter with the English in the past. To support this, in 1871, The
National Rifle Association was formed with the objective to help improve the American civilians'

being stalked by a predator outside of her home. Over a few days, she tells the police and files a
report, but the problem persists. She fears for her life and tries to find a way to protect herself and
her loved one. As a last resort, she travels to her local gun store because she needs to buy a gun for
her safety. Unfortunately, the cashier explains that she'll need to wait for her gun because there is a
waiting period to receive her firearm. She begs and pleads and tells the cashier her situation and all

Franken was also able to downplay the usefulness of a firearm by including a series of sarcastic tips
for tragedy in a home. For example, "1. Keep the gun loaded... 2. Put the gun in an unlocked

numbers to exaggerate and intensify the deadliness of guns. His sarcasm adds diversity to his piece,

The least persuasive essay out of the four was Harlan Ellison's An Edge in My Voice. Ellison
presents his argument in a style that seems to me is more of a disgruntled rambling about both
famous and infamous people that die from gun shot, than an article about gun control. Ellison
spends the first few pages asking the reader if they cried when a certain person died; he begins with
famous people such as Martin Luther King, Bobby Kennedy, and John Lennon, and then moves on
to more obscure examples. Instead of trying to build an argument, Ellison seemed to be more caught
up with anger and the notion of conspiracies. He does however try to use the "intensify" technique
of Rank's model, to persuade the reader of the horror of deaths caused by guns and their importance.
Although Ellison did try to persuade his audience in a different manor, I felt it was ineffective at
best,

Canada and the U.S have similar laws for firearms, Canada has more stricter and beneficial laws,

This is a terrible tragedy, but it brings us face to face with the reality that even in the most innocent
of situations, if a gun is involved, there is the possibility of death. Originally, guns were not intended
to protect; they were intended to kill. Made for wars, they were weapons of war, in which they were
used to fight enemies, and they are still used for this today. However, today we are fighting a
different war. This war is against people. Kids are killing kids, adults are killing adults, and adults
are killing kids, men are killing women, and women are killing men. People use guns to kill
someone for whatever reason, and then the other people sometimes retaliate, which makes it a
never–ending cycle. The intent of a gun, whether to protect, as many people say, or not, is to kill
someone else. Though I think guns are awful and should be restricted in my community and every
other community around the country, it would be violating a person's rights under the Second
Amendment, which states the people's right to a well regulated militia necessary to the security of a
Free State and the right to keep and bear arms. According to this amendment, almost anyone can
