Introduction of IS 816
• This Indian Standard (Pirst Revision) wa. Adopted by the Indian Standard.
• Institution on 19 December 1969, arter the draft finalizrd bythe Structural
Welding Sectional Committee had been approved by theStructural and
Metals Diviaion Council.
• This standard was published in 1956.
• As result of experience gained during these yeaf. It has been decided to
revise this standard with the following modilcations
Continue…
1. stressesope of the code has been extended to semi-automatic and automatic
welding processes.
2. The size of the deep penetration welds (or precesses other than manual
metal arc, has been left to the discretion of the deslgner.
3. The allowable stresles in welda have been increased to bring them in line
with those for parent meta) given in IS: 800-1962-.
4. Formule for combination of stress for fillet weld. Have been included.in
Terminology
• All terms relatins to arc welded construction shall have, unless specially
defined in this code, the meaning assigned to them in IS : 812·19S7
Materials
1. Mild steel :- All steel used for structural members and
connections shall be mild steel of weldable quality
conforming to IS: 226.1969~ or IS : 2062-19691 or equivalent.
2. Electrode :- Electrodes shall conform to IS : 814 ( Part I
).1974” andIS : 814 ( Part II )-1974
3. Filler Wire and flex :- The filler wire and flux combination for
submerged arc welding shall conform to the requirements for
the desired applit’Altion as laid down in IS : 3613·1966
DESIGN
1. For all butt welds..the details shall in general conform to the
provisions of IS : 823·1964~ in the case of manual metal arc welding
and IS : 43S3-1967+ in the case ofsubmerged arc welding.
2. Unsealed butt welds of V, U, J and bevel types and incomplete
penetration butt weld should not be used for highly stressed joint And
joints subjected to dynamic, repeating or alternating force.
Continue..
• They shall also not be subjected to a bending moment about the
longitudinal axis of the weld other than that normally resulting
from the eccentricity or the weld metal relative to the parts joined.
3. Size - The size of a butt weld shall be specified by the effective
throat thickness.
4. Effective throat length –The effective throat thickness of a
complete penetration butt weld shall be taken as the thickness of the
thinner part joined.
Continue…
• The effective throat thickness of “T” or “L” t butt joints shall be the
thickness of the abutting part.Reinforcement may be provided to ensure full
cross-sectional area, but shall not be considered as part of the effective
throat thickness .
5. Effective length -The effective length of a butt weld shall be taken al the
length of the continuous full size weld except in the following two eases, when
the full width of the joint or piece shall be taken as effective length:
