If there are any two words that could describe me better than anything, they would be "animal
lover." Animals have always been a huge part of my life–my passion–which is why I am now
pursuing a career in Veterinary Medicine. With this being said, when I fourteen years old, I had a
pet calf named Lucy. I had raised and bottle–fed Lucy from the time she was only a day old. She was
a great pet and friend. I loved that calf and she loved me. One sunny summer day, I came home to
find that Lucy was not in the pasture. She was missing. I frantically ran to the house to tell my
mother about her disappearance and found that while I had been away to my friend's house, she

As I walk into the Homeward Animal Shelter for my dog walking shift, I think of the reason I
began my weekly volunteering. I want to give love, in any way I can, to the animals who have been
left by the ones they love. These animals that I spend an hour and a half with every Sunday need to
know that someone loves them. That they have not been forgotten about and that it gets better. After
spending the summer with my Aunt Renae and Uncle Chris and watching their newest rescue dog
open up to be after three years, I learned that. For a dog that was abandoned by his family and left on

Snoop's journey into our family began when his owners abandoned him and his little Chihuahua

(MOGS). His white coat made him easy to love, but after the treatment of his last family he did not

are many different forms of animal cruelty, ranging from labs, to farms, to even circuses. People
have been using animals for a long time, they have controlled them for even longer. But despite that,
there have still been some positive outcomes from this otherwise dark subject. Some people support
the things that are happening to these animals. But others make it their mission to stand up for the
animals that are mistreated everyday. Animal cruelty can mean many things to many different
people, it can be a controversial topic, with many different sides and stories to it, it has a long
history, much of it being good, much of it bad.
There are more types of animal cruelty then one could even imagine. Many people do not consider
that what they are eating, or wearing, or using, or enjoying came at the cost of an animal. According
to Rachel Hajar, one form of animal cruelty that has been put into the spotlight in recent years is
animal testing (Alternative to Animal Testing 39). Animals are brought into labs and spend their
entire lives there being tortured, used, and experimented on. It's estimated that each year, more than
100 million animals are used for experimenting. They use all sorts of animals, including dogs, cats,

When I started to volunteer at the Animal Rescue League of Iowa I didn't think very much of it. I
needed volunteer hours and I love animals so I thought it could be fun to go out there and see what

I am a firm believer that pets are family members and should be treated as such. For my entire life
I have been lucky enough that my mom has surrounded me with numerous different pets. Through

hunted down and killed, we need to discover a new way of displaying that our world is full of
beautiful animals and wildlife. Wild animals are suffering both physically and mentally from the lack
of freedom that confinement imposes. These harmful environments are preventing animals from
having the opportunity to live in, and be exposed to their natural habitats. Keeping animals
imprisoned in cages and small enclosures just for the sake of human observation causes stress and

Zoos regularly waste millions of dollars constructing statues, and building gift shops and concession
stands. This money would do far more to help animals if it were spent on habitat preservation
projects. While the Lincoln Park zoo has free admissions all year long, people take the advantage to
go and watch animals perform tricks, paying no attention to their dangerous and insufficient living
environment.
Proposal
The Lincoln Park Zoo should be banned in order to protect animals from unsuitable enclosures and
inadequate living conditions. Many of us feel the obligation to give animals the same rights as
ourselves, so the idea of closing this zoo will prevent the capturing of wildlife and help end the
miseries of several animals. By shutting down the Lincoln Park Zoo, numerous controversial
issues and struggles will brought to attention on how to care for captive wildlife, or where animals
would go without a home. However, if public zoos planned to close within the next year, hundreds
of animals that are currently residing in the exhibits will be transported to an animal care center
and then released back into the wildlife. This would allow for animals to roam free without being
enclosed within a limited space, and be able to enjoy their natural habitat. Getting rid of cages
reinforces the idea of interacting with animals and biodiversity in parks and reserves in a natural way.
