7. กำรอ่ำนเลขจำนวนนับ Cardinal Numbers
1. เลข 0 ถ้าใช้ในความหมายคณิตศาสตร์ และอุณหภูมิให้อ่านว่า zero (ซิโร)
เช่น
* It is eight degree below zero. (อุณหภูมิลบ 8 องศำ)
2. เลข 0 ถ้านามาใช้กับหมายเลขโทรศัพท์ ให้อ่านว่า “โอ” เช่น
* Dial 02-547-8972 (อ่านว่า oh two five four seven eight
nine seven two)
3. คาว่า hundred, thousand และ million ใช้เป็นรูปเอกพจน์
เมื่อมีจานวนนับนาหน้าเพราะคาเหล่านี้ต่างก็ใช้เป็นคุณศัพท์ เช่น
* Three hundred students นักศึกษา300 คน (อย่าใช้ three
hundreds student)
* Five million hens ไก่ห้าล้านตัว (อย่าใช้ five millions hen)
8. แต่ถ้าคาทั้ง 3 นี้นามาใช้อย่างคานาม และตามด้วย of จะใช้เป็นรูปพหูพจน์เสมอ

(ผมได้เตือนคุณให้คิดถึงเรืองนี้ตั้งหลายร้อยครั้งแล้วนะ)

4. เลขจานวนนับตั้งแต่ 100 ขึ้นไป ให้อ่านโดยใช้ and มาเชื่อม ส่วนจานวน
หลักสิบ ตั้งแต่ 21-99 ให้ใช้ hyphen (-) มาคั่น เช่น

Cardinal เสมอ เช่น

(นักศึกษา 3 คนแรกเป็นชาวอเมริกัน)
* The last two pictures are very ugly.
(2 ภาพสุดท้ายนั้นน่าเกลียดมาก)
6. หน้าหนังสือ (page) หรือบทที่ (lesson หรือ chapter)ในหนังสือให้อ่าน
แบบจานวนนับธรรมดา เช่น
* page 10 = page ten
* lesson 8 = lesson eight
* part III = part three
แต่จะใช้ the first lesson, the fifth chapter, the second part ก็ได้
11. 7. การอ่านชื่อพระมหากษัตริย์ พระราชินี หรือพระสันตะปาปา ต้องอ่าน

16. Note ข้อสังเกต
สามารถใช้ a แทน one ได้ เช่น
½ อาจอ่านว่า a half หรือ one half ก็ได้
1/100 อ่านว่า a hundred หรือ one hundred
ถ้า เศษมากกว่าหนึ่ง ให้เติม s ที่เลขส่วนตลอดไป เช่น
⅔ = two - thirds
⅝ = five - eights
17. ถ้ำเศษมีตัวเลขตั่งแต่สองตัวขึ้นไป หรือตั้งแต่หลักสิบขึ้นไป นิยมใช้ over แทน
hyphen (-) ระหว่ำงเศษและส่วน เช่น
32/51 = thirty-two over fifty-first
749/4000 = seven hundred and forty-nine
over four thousandths
ถ้ำ เศษตัวนั้นมีจำนวนมำกรวมอยู่ด้วย หรือเป็นเศษส่วนจำนวนคละ ให้อ่ำน
จำนวนเต็มก่อนด้วยเลขจำนวนนับธรรมดำ แล้ว จึงตำมด้วย and แล้ว จึงอ่ำน
เศษส่วนตำมหลักกำรอ่ำนปกติ เช่น

19. House Number (การอ่านเลขบ้าน)
เลขบ้ำนปกตินิยมอ่ำนเรียงตัว ส่วนเลขศูนย์ให้ออกเสียงว่ำ oh
และถ้ำเลขบ้ำนนั้นมีทับ (/) จะใช้ slash หรือ stroke ก็ได้ เช่น
650 = six five oh
276/3 = two seven six slash/stroke three
ถ้ำเลขบ้ำนนั้นมีเลขถึงหลักพัน นิยมอ่ำนเป็นจำนวนหลักทีละคู่ เช่น
3250 = thirty-two fifty
4326 = forty-three twenty-six
20. Telephone number (เลขหมายโทรศัพท์ )
เราใช้เลขจานวนนับธรรมดา (Cardinal Number) ในการอ่านเลข
หมายโทรศัพท์ ซึ่งจะอ่านเรียงตัวไป เลข 0 จะออกเสียงว่า oh หรือ
zero ก็ได้
ในกรณีที่เลขหมายโทรศัพท์ลงท้ายด้วยเลขศูนย์สองตัว จะอ่านเป็น
double oh หรืออ่านเรียงตามปกติก็ได้ หรืออ่านลงท้ายด้วย
hundred หรือ thousand ก็ได้

+ plus 3 + 4 = 7 three plus four is seven.
- minus 12 - 8 = 4 twelve minus eight is four.
× multiplied by 15 x 7 = 35
five multiplied by seven is thirty - five.
÷ divided by 10 / 5 = 2 ten divided by five is two.
= equal to dozen = 12 a dozen is equal to twelve.
< less than 10 < 12 ten is less then twelve.
> greater than 20 > 10 twenty is greater then ten.
