Impact Of Confucianism On Korea
Although China's influence over Korea has waned severely since the dynastic years we find the
Confucian system of virtues and behaviors, China's chief export from that time, still very much
alive. Korea highly values the extended family, education, personal discipline and public order. In
South Korea Confucian temples continue to be maintained throughout the country. The tenets of
Confucianism are seen as antidotes to social ills and therefore education is thought of as a means of
building character, not simply of intellectual formation. The values of Confucianism are
promulgated throughout Korea in places as diverse as school, the office and the home. Television
programs often portray Confucian merits such as filial piety and harmony. However ... Show more

Upon analyzing the Analects, we can describe filial piety as "not being disobedient" (Koh, 366).
One's filial duties are clearly defined by Confucius and how to accomplish this is a large part of the
text. According to Koh Eung–Kang, filial duty is departmentalized into three separate categories:
mental care, physical care, and care after death (366). This special care can be interpreted as the
concept of benevolence which was listed above as one of the five virtues, where familial care holds
more weight than emotional attachment. Today, benevolence is still held in the highest regard, and
children are still expected to do their filial duty and care for their parents. This is evident by the lack
of nursing homes in Korea. Grandparents are expected to live with their children until the end of
their natural lives. (Koh, Eun–Kang, Koh, Chin–Kang 2008:

Mohism and Mencius’ Thought
Introduction to Classical Chinese Philosophy
Instructor: Masayuki Sato
Mid–Term Paper
Question 1: Do you think which doctrine was really helpful for saving people from their destitute
condition between Mohism and Mencius' thought, and why?
When we put the two philosopher's thoughts together, we can see one striking commonality. Both of
them were against aggressive way and emphasized the importance of caring for the welfare of the
state's people. Ideologies that run in opposite directions also exist between the two thoughts.
Eventually, it came down to how their teachings were carried out and their applicability to the lives
of the lower class people, which determined which one of them, truly was the more helpful one.

In retrospect, as subtle and incongruent as certain Mohism principles might seem to be, its core
principles and teachings appealed more to the people of that time. The practicality and applicability
of Mohism served the people of that time better as they were aimed at changing their circumstances
and improving their lives. His criticism of the excesses of the powerful made him a champion
among the common people and became a "voice" for them.
Question 2: Try to conjecture the reason that Confucianism has been so dominant for the ongoing
two millennia of Chinese society and culture?
The Analects, a record of the words, acts and discussions of Chinese philosopher Confucius and his
disciples, has been said to be the "Bible" of the Chinese people. 2000 years on, it is still setting the
standards for individual conducts, administration of governments and communities. How has his
teachings inspired a way of life that has been so dominant until today? The growth and success of
Chinese societies worldwide have bore testament to his teachings. Confucian culture has
outperformed others in more ways than one. When people see a correlation between gaining positive
results and outcomes, and the practice of his philosophy, the belief grows. As a result of this, people
continue to believe and attempt to live by his philosophies, in the hope of attaining the same
success.
To understand how Confucius could make such a change in China we

Differences Of Han Feizi And Confucianism
Chinese philosophy is dominated by a set of so–called Confucian values. These values, inherent in
Chinese thought, were pushed forward by Confucius himself during his life time in an effort to
propose a better, guided way of leadership. While Confucian values stress the naturally good nature
of man, they stand in direct opposition to the writings of Han Feizi, a legalist philosopher under the
first emperor of China. For the Legalists, the nature of man must be stressed as evil, and combatted
under that assumption. Han Feizi and Confucius take two different stances regarding man's true
nature, and in these differing stances propose varying guidelines for how a state and its leader
should act. Confucianism, under the belief of limited action, ... Show more content on

Within the Analects, one specific line stands out showing Confucius' stance on a less active
government. When asking about what they would do if given a political office, Confucius only
agree with the following statement ushered by Tseng His, "In the late spring when the spring dress is
ready, I would like to go with five or six grown–ups and six or seven young boys to bathe in the I
River, enjoy the breeze on the Rain Dance Altar, and then return home singing" (Chan p. 38). By
agreeing, Confucius is noting the preferred method by which an office holder should act, one which
amplifies their connection with inner harmony and helps the people enhance their own. This extends
into the ruler himself as well, with Confucius noting that "If a ruler sets himself right, he will be
followed without his command. If he does not set himself right, even his commands will not be
obeyed" (Chan p. 41). Confucius also notes the superiority of filial piety and respect towards one's
family over loyalty to the state, stating that in his (hypothetical) country upright men conceal the
misconduct of their children and fathers even when against the law (Chan p. 41). Confucianism in
relation to government shows the belief that the inherent goodness in men must be allowed to
flourish, even when against

The Early Confucius And Modern Political Party
This film likens the early Confucius philosophers to a modern political party. The three major
Confucius philosophers, Confucius, Mencius and Xunzi, are all vying for the position of the leader
of the Confucianist party, a center–right party who rules China in 2025. The three candidates have
some differing views on the possible direction of the party and each have their own ideas about not
only the way humanity is naturally or currently but they are also concerned with the way man
should deal with conflict, self–cultivation and day to day life. The story is set during a time of much
conflict and World War 3 has recently broken out after decades of turmoil. There is significant
amount of worry among the general population and each leader wishes to ease this worry in a
different way. The Confucianist party is an established party established by Confucius to promote
his ideology and desires for the nations. Currently, the party is in trouble as many are unsure of
Confucius' ideology still rings true in the uncertain times of 2025.
Confucius is the most established Confucianist. He is the founder of the party and a well–respected
and strong leader.
Mencius is an academic and candidate for the position of leader of the Confucianist party. He is
younger than Confucius and part of a younger generation that has been all too familiar with war and
fighting.
Xunzi is another young candidate who hold a particularly pessimistic view on the state of the state's
economy and the current

Ethical Phenomenon Of Confucianism
The Ethical Phenomenon of the Confucian Family
The spiritual core of Confucianism is the eternal human values. However, on this it may be objected
that all more or less significant spiritual currents in one way or another have always been associated
with these values. To this, there is the following answer: a pledge of eternal Confucianism was able
to express those values in the most accessible, the most common and the indisputable form.
Moreover, the author believes that it is necessary to speak about eternity. Set up in the Confucian

Confusion About Confucianism : Everything Is One
Confusion about Confucianism: Everything is one As Confucius said, "Virtue is not left to stand
alone. He who practices it will have neighbors." How can one affect the others? What will be lost if
one element is missing? In Confucianism, there are the five constants (Ren, Yi, Zhi, Xin, and Li),
each correlates with others; however, the main focus is the practice of Ren and Filial Piety, which
can transform us into Jun Zi. Confucius suggests that all practices are related to each other, and
missing any elements will fail to become a Jun Zi (the ultimate goal). The practice of Ren promotes
the how we should treat each other with love, however, unlike Mohism, Confucianism believe there
should not be universal love, we should love based on who they are. Furthermore, filial piety, the
love toward parents and family, remarks the importance of Ren and the theme of Confucianism. Li,
the practice of caring for others, concludes the significant to become a Jun Zi. Even though there is
no explicit definition for love in general, combining all three practices will certainly demonstrates
an all–around love, which is the trait of Jun Zi. Furthermore, the importance of filial piety
contributes how traditional Chinese view relationship and marriage, which still exist in some
families. The love and care that Confucianism introduce are arguably the most general and
ambiguous, which are the two different kinds of love: either toward elderly or strangers. The love
towards elderly is as known

Confucianism And The Chinese Culture Essay
Confucianism has been known to be the binding factor for much of China's history. Though the
founder of Confucianism has no official title or record, the inspiration of these teachings, Confucius,
was the guiding factor for change in China set forth by his understanding of environment and needs
of his country's future. Due to the acceptance and immersion of Confucianism with in the Chinese
culture, much of Confucius' teachings has found themselves religiously embedded in its entirety, not
only within day–to–day life, but with the political and holistic venues.
_____Confucius was a man who lived during the Warring States period. This was mainly during the
Zhou dynasty. What he experienced in his day–to–day life consisted of warfare and strife, driven by
selfish, greedy, and acquisitive impulses. Moments of disharmony amongst families and
communities, due to interpersonal conflict and social inequalities, and religious and moral decline
with the intent of using it against their own people for political gain and misuse. As central power
weakened, feudal lords held more power than kings of the central court, minsters assassinated their
rulers, and sons killed their fathers.
_____Much of what he witnesses during this time becomes indoctrinated into the moral fibers of
Confucianism as actions one shouldn't do. During his lifetime, Confucius crossed neighboring states
trying to preach and hope for head officials to pick up his newfound way of ceasing chaos amongst
the states.

Mengzi And Confucianism
One of the oldest philosophies in Chinese history is Confucianism. At the time of the warring states,
Confucius wandered throughout China seeking a ruler who accepted the Confucian way. Since then,
his ideas grew and are still relevant today. Throughout time other philosophers, Mengzi and Xunzi,
have interpreted Confucius' teachings and have long debated whether human nature is good or bad. I
argue that human nature is not, as Mengzi believes, inherently good, instead, completely self–
interested.
The Confucian philosopher, Mengzi, asserts that humans have instincts by nature that tend toward
goodness. Meaning, because human have virtuous instincts, human nature is good. Within his
philosophy, Mengzi claims that humans have four sprouts; ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

It is "kill or be killed, eat or be eaten," (London) because the cold, the wind, the snow, does not care
about the wellbeing of man, nor understand humans needs to survive. So, when Mengzi uses
metaphors depicting nature as a whole and glorious thing, I disagree. Mengzi believes that nature is
good and therefore human nature is good, yet nature is actually savage. Almost all of Jack London's
novels describe the ruthlessness of nature describing nature laughing, "a laughter that was mirthless
as the smile of the Sphinx, a laughter cold as the frost and partaking of the grimness of infallibility"
(London). Nature is teasing people and pulling them into the brutal wild. If nature does not care
about humans and is ruthless, then human nature is the same way. Humans have instincts which help
them survive; that is human nature. This is the reason the human race has conquered the globe.
Unlike what Mengzi believes, just like the wild, human's brains are hardwired to survive, and our
actions are completely self–interested.
With the example of the child falling into the well, Mengzi asserts that our impulse to save the child
stems from human's sprout of compassion. However, I agree with Hobbes that "[w]arre, where
every man is Enemy to every man," (Schwitzgebel) and the only reason human's instinct to save, is
because our brains are hard–wired to keep the human race living. It is evolutionary biology that
people started to believe babies and small things were cute, and

who influence the teachings of Confucianism that still lingers in China to this day. Confucianism is
a philosophical ideal way of reality that inspires an integrity mindset. These principles were taught
and created by man a name Confucius. To be more detailed, Confucianism stood on three pillars,
Ren, Li and Xiao. Ren is the principle of human's behavior of kindness that makes man distinctively
human which gives us our humanity. Li is principle of gain, organization, propriety which guides
humans specially in society leaders in their actions. Xiao is principle of piety, respecting those who

Mencius was an official of the government and saw no harmony between the hierarchal feudal

The Warring States period in China (453–221 BCE) presented a time of great confusion and chaos
among the people of China. However, it was also a great period for the philosophy of Confucianism,
with the teachings of Mencius and Hsun Tzu to lead the way for their lost followers. According to
Hsun Tzu and Mencius, human beings give birth to their children with a sense of an inherent
reaction to life. Without proper teaching, children would be uncivilized, and ineffective in
contributing anything towards society. Young age is important, for it is at this time that their
perspectives drastically split. Mencius believed that human beings were born with a rationality of

This governance style would entail a stronger sense of fraternity and stronger bonds between the
classes. This would be reinforced by an economic system that is progressive in centralized plots of
diversified farms, where a mutual central square is cultivated by multiple families and encompassed
their payment for taxation. This would entail families working together towards a mutual goal of
bettering the entire community and the state through their taxation. These familiar bonds of filial
piety would continue to stabilize their economic status, and create a new social infrastructure that
would encompass a similar moral code. According to Mencius, hungry people cannot be moral
people, and this economic system would have been effective in unifying the people if people heeded
his warnings about the destabilizing morality and political structures. Mencius, though, had
numerous flaws in his philosophy, because his arguments were based on contradictions and vacuity.
The political system based on the lessening of the repercussions of laws and lessening taxes by a
benevolent rule lead by virtue was the pivotal aspect of his argument that a good natured ruler
would be rewarded with obedient subjects. The strict enforcement of armies to serve in battle, as in
the methodology of Hsun Tzu, would serve as a catalyst for action, as in Mencius's ideology the
inherent selfishness of people would overtake their desire to fight. The economic system

Christ's teaching tells us to treat others as we would like to be served. There are also similarities in
their lessons about humanity; Christianity holds family sacred, reveres the past and respects order.
Hence, it embraces the truth and goodness of Confucius doctrines. Rishmawy states that he has
learned a different way of viewing Jesus teachings with the help of Confucius (D. Rishmawy 2015).
Before he read Confucius, he had a mentality that loving your enemy involves treating them
precisely as you would entertain your friends. After going through it, he understood that this was
unwise in some situations that required one to protect themselves from such kind of people.
Consequently, through such incidences of both ideologies complementing each other, one can be
both a Confucian and a Christian at the same time. Despite the similarities between the two,
differences that may prevent one from being both a Christian and a Confucian exist. According to
Huang (2009), differences between them are seen in their ways of thinking. One of the apparent
striking differences is in their beliefs. Christians have faith in a single God who created everything
in the universe. God is considered to be distinct from human beings. God is purely spiritual, unlike a
human being who has a physical and spiritual segment. Nevertheless, Confucians have no particular

The Confucian Concept Of Authority Essay
The Confucian concept of authority is exemplified through the teachings of the Way of Heaven and
filial piety. In Confucius's thought, authority is described as something that manifests the power to
enforce obedience; anything of authority encourages, or demands, people to live a specific way. This
obedience constructs a notion of hierarchy within relationships and implies an obstinate expectation
for reverence and devotion. Through the teachings of the Way and filial piety, people are advised to
behave in a specified manner that is supposedly appropriate; however, these "rules" epitomize the
exercise of power and demand for obedience. Authority in Confucius's teachings of the Way of
Heaven and filial piety should not define appropriate structures of relationships between a Lord and
his people, a Master and his disciple, or a father and his son, because the authority abusively
demands submission. The Way of Heaven, as described in The Essential Analects, commands for a
specific structure of a state. "In a state that has the Way, to be poor and of low status is a cause for
shame; in a state that is without the Way, to be wealthy and honored is equally a cause for shame"
(8.13). The Way is a source of authority within the state; the Way is the key to virtue. The admirable
ideals of virtue encourage people to the lifestyle commanded by the Way. If a person is living in
accordance with the Way, it is shameful to be poor or discontent; people who understand the Way
would exhibit

Mencius vs. Confucius
I think that Confucius was more correct in his views than Mencius, not because of differing views
(although they did differ at certain points), but because of the way these ideas were carried out
throughout his career, and ultimately, his life.
Confucius was a Chinese thinker and philosopher. His philosophy emphasized personal and
governmental morality, correctness of social relationships, and justice and sincerity. These values
gained prominence in China over other doctrines, such as Taoism during the Han Dynasty.
Confucius' thoughts have been developed into a system of philosophy which has come to be known
as Confucianism. It was introduced to Europe by Matteo Ricci, who was the first to come up with
the Latin name "Confucius".

"When the stables were burnt down, on returning from court, Confucius said, 'Was anyone hurt?' He
did not ask about the horses" (Analects, James Legge translation).
The passage conveys the lesson that by not asking about the horses, Confucius demonstrated that a
sage values humans over property. Readers of this lesson are led to think about whether their
response would follow Confucius's, and to pursue self–improvement if it would not. Confucius, a
great example of human excellence, uses himself as the ultimate model, rather than a deity or a
universally true set of abstract principles. For these reasons Confucius's teaching may be considered
a Chinese example of humanism.
Perhaps his most famous teaching was the Golden Rule stated in the negative form, often called the
Silver Rule:
"Zi Gong (a disciple of Confucius) asked: 'Is there any one word that could guide a person
throughout life?'
The Master replied: 'How about reciprocity: never impose on others what you would not choose for
yourself?'" (Analects, David Hinton translation).
Confucius's teachings were later turned into a long set of rules and practices by his numerous
followers who organized his teachings into the Analects. In the centuries after his death, Mencius
and Xun Zi both came up with important teachings expanding on the fundamentals associated with
Confucius. In time, their writings, together with the Analects

Filial Piety In Confucianism In Ancient China
Filial Piety in Confucianism A famous Chinese saying asks, if one does not have piety towards one's

China Confucius taught filial piety as, "the reverent respect of children toward their parents."
(Ebrey, Cambridge Illustrated History, p. 43) Confucius taught that duty to one's parents is an
integral part of society because it fit into the larger ethical system that he believed in. As the saying
says, how can one is not loyal to ones parents, how can they be loyal to anything else. "Fillial piety

Debate Between Mencius And Xunzi
How has the debate on human nature has influenced society today?
The study of human nature has been one that is largely debated in Chinese Philosophy, spanning for
almost 25 centuries since the Zhou dynasty (Scarpari, 323). While their Western counterparts were
concerned with developing a perfect guide for ethics, Chinese philosophy seeks to first discover the
innate nature of human beings, before determining the type of governance and structure of society to
progressively develop their community We will explore these questions that arise after the Song
dynasty that later became a central debate in Confucianism. Some have contended that the human
nature debate between Mencius and Xunzi converges as they both aim for the same outcome. In this

Nuyen (123) has also contended that Mencius considers Heaven to qualify and delegate ruling rights
to whom they (heaven) deem fit to carry out its intention. By that, Mencius will only consider the
upper ruling class to be able to make appropriate decisions for the people because they are the only
ones who can interpret Heaven's will. In Chinese philosophy, many see that it is possible to become
like a God, hence many stress on the importance of 'doing good' and being moral to achieve that
bestowing status. Confucians first maintained that there was a morality that was mandated by
heaven, and that it was a pivotal purpose for humans to safeguard what was given to them by the
heavens (Scarpari, 323). Hence, development of our morality is also part of heaven's will for
humans (Loubna, 181). If desire is constituted as part of human nature, we need to find a balance

Similarities Between China And Confucianism
Confucianism, the philosophical ideas of Kong Qiu (551–479 BCE), or Confucius, has made a great
impact on China's history. His ideas came to pragmatic use since the rise of the Han Dynasty. Since
then, political reforms and changes of China's state has caused them to adopt and abandon it
continuously. Confucius's ideas still exists in other Asian countries too, like South Korea, where
Confucianism passively saturates the daily lives and practices of South Koreans. But the country at
hand is China. China's current government is controlled by the CCP, or Communist Party of China.
Nonetheless, Since Marxist China, China has gradually turned to democratic and capitalistic
principles. But would Confucianism, a more socially ethic for of government and principles be
better as opposed to a liberal, Western form of government? Theoretically, with the population of
China, almost of ⅕ of the world's population, a Confucian type government would be a viable one,
but maybe not a desirable one, although popular. Still, the ideals would influence China's people by
a larger scale, bringing a revival of Confucianism that will be greater than ever. Traditional
Confucianism focuses on social ethics, encouraged and exemplified by the government.
Benevolence towards each other and strong will for the well being of others was greatly motivated
by the teachings of Confucius. The emphasis on the education by the "ru" was an important aspect

Filial Piety’s Role in Ancient China Essay
In the 18th century, China was influenced by various teachings of philosophers and beliefs that the
society had placed emphasis on. Filial piety (xiao) was a major practice around this period when it
was strongly carried inside and outside the household. Filial piety is not only the guiding principle
of Chinese ethics but it also played an affirmative role in determining the Chinese lifestyle; it was
practiced daily in the family and in other areas such as education, religion and government. It was
the central root of Chinese morals and the society was constructed upon the principles of xiao,
which certainly became the premises of Chinese culture and the society. In Confucianism, the

But even dogs or horses are given food. If there is no feeling of reverence, wherein lies the
difference? (Chan & Watson, pp. 29)". The quotation by Confucius defines the practice of filial
piety by contrasting humans with animals, and stating that by providing food or necessities to the
parents is not enough, but that there are responsibilities beyond providing necessities. For
Confucius, a child giving respect to his parents while they are alive could be done by animals as
well, however to be a filial child one must show respect for their parent even after their death. Even
as far as the Han dynasty, in which Confucianism was recognized as a state orthodoxy , is also
regarded as administrator endorsement of filial piety, thoroughly constructing unfilial behaviour a
punishable crime and rewarding acts of filial piety (Chan, Alan Kam–Leung; Tan, Sor–hoon). Han
emperors took on xiao as part of their title and filial piety entered more and more regularly into the
dynastic histories and other historical works (Chan, Alan Kam–Leung; Tan, Sor–hoon). Filial piety
was practiced all the way through the dynasties and especially in this century where many
philosophers, including Confucius, focused on bringing this practice into society for better
development of the families and society. Similar to Confucius, Chu Hsi also emphasized filial piety
in his proclamations. Chu Hsi became a successful administrative and supporter of education as a

The Philosophy Of Zhu Xi Essay
The philosophy of Zhu Xi
China is a country with long history, which at the same time comes with a complex philosophy
system. Date back to the Warring States period, the rising of Confucianism, Daoism, Legalism, and
some other schools captured the attention of the society. These schools created their different and
special philosophies, which in some way guided the trend of the society development. With several
hundreds years of inherited and people applied their own thoughts to the original philosophy and
tried to explain that in their own way, some philosophy look different from what it used to be.
However, some people's opinions will give a philosophy a new life. Zhu Xi, an unforgettable person
in China history, is "generally ranked as second only to Confucius in influence and as rivaling
Zhuang Zi in philosophic acumen in the Chinese philosophical tradition (Thompson, 2)."
Zhu Xi, also called Chu His, was a Confucian scholar in Song dynasty, who was the leading figure
of the School of Pronciple (Slingerlandm 148) and the most influential rationalist Neo–
Confucianism (Chan, 1). He was born in Fujian, and his father worked as the subprefectual sheriff.
He received instruction from his father at home after his father was forced from office. At his age of
19, he passed the Imperial Examination and became a presented scholar. In 1157, he stopped serving
in an official capacity and began to study under Li Tong, who followed the tradition of Cheng Hao
and Cheng Yi (Chan, 588).

A Critique of Confucian Morality
A Critique of Confucian Morality
For many centuries, Confucianism has been widely revered by the Chinese for its emphasis on
morality. Confucius, who lived from 551 to 479 BCE, is different to most philosophers in that he
showed no interest questioning his existence, the possibility of a God, or the reality that he seemed
to live in; instead he focused on the human relations side of philosophy as it was his belief that
people should "give (themselves) earnestly to the duties due to men ... (and) keep aloof from
(spiritual beings)" (Confucius 195). By negating the metaphysical side of philosophy, he was able to
devote himself to mold his disciples into ideal gentleman who were morally righteous, and were
able to benefit society. He ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Confucius defined filial piety as "not being disobedient". One of his disciples said that those who
were filial were afraid of "offending ... their superiors" (Confucius 124). Rebelliousness against
what is expected leads to breakthroughs and if one is forced to listen to his parents and carry out
their wishes, they will not be able to do so. There have been many instances of those who have
spoken out against authoritative figures for their own rights, and because of this, their lives were
able to change for the better. Parents should be a guide, but the deference that the youth is expected
to have will make them into a mere extension of their parents, with no independent thought for
themselves, knowledge of how to think for their own or speak up against what is wrong. Therefore,
one should be wary of absolute filial piety as seen in countries that adopt Confucian philosophies;
freedom is not as attainable as in the West. In addition, Confucianism does not place importance on
the role of the female in society. Modern Western philosophy is very egocentric and the rights of
each individual matters. However, in traditional Confucian philosophy, these rights are less
significant; the importance of the individual comes from the role he plays in society. In the five
hierarchal relationships, four out of the five are superior–inferior relationships; only one is
reciprocal. One

Classic Confucianism Essay
Introduction
One of Mencius' significant contributions to the Classic Confucianism is that he proposed a series of
dichotomies. Confucian scholars usually discuss three of them: the dichotomy between human being
and other animals, between righteousness and interests, and between kingship and hegemony. In the
first, Mencius indicated that human being is fundamentally different from other animals because of
the four moral beginnings in the heart. In the second, he pointed out that righteousness is primarily
valuable compared to mere self interests. And in the last, Mencius claimed that if one is a human
with four moral beginnings, and develops them to be humanness, righteousness, ritual and wisdom,
then humane kingship rather than military hegemony ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
He admitted that they are all in human nature. However, it is not the logic that if one is natural to
have desires, then one can and should freely satisfy them. There, he mentioned the notion of
mandate. A superior man knows that the human nature is different from the mandate, so he will
consider the satisfaction of the nature to desire in terms of heavenly restrictions. For instance,
everyone desires delicious food, but it is not the case that everyone has a chance to eat the tasty
dishes. And in most cases, one cannot fulfil all the desires, as desires themselves are infinitely deep,
and the objective resources and human capacities are finite. Besides, as human being, we have more
than mere biological nature to satisfy, and that is also a part of our human nature: the moral nature.
This is clearly revealed in the debate between Mencius and Gaozi about the essence of human
nature. Gaozi said: "Life is what we call nature. (Gaozi)" Clearly, this refers to the biological nature,
which Mencius had differentiated from the mandate. So he replied with an argument: "Is the nature
of a dog like the nature of an ox, and the nature of an ox like the nature of a man? (Gaozi)"
Apparently, besides biological one, there is another distinct essence in human nature which makes
human "human". And that is the moral

Compare Mencius And Daoism
To a large extent, it is better to live our lives spontaneously. This essay will evaluate with points of
Mencius and Daoism. This has been an argumentative notion for a long time that how should we
live our lives, whether we should follow the flow, or to make changes by ourselves. Actually, we
have to understand that sometimes, it is not that easy to make any changes or force ourselves to
correct things. What we could do is only to act by following our feelings. For example, Swimmers
tread water by following the dao of water but not acting on their behalf. They just follow their own
feeling when they are in the water which made them swim even under a waterfall, whereas turtles
and fish are not able to do so. (Book 19, Extending life) It ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

Living creatures are born to do what they want, like horses are not expected to be tamed. They

learn any rituals to correct themselves. However, I do not agree with this. People have their own
xing, it may be good or bad, but I would like to emphasise is that how people's xing become in the
future do depends on how they are educated. It should be better to live our lives spontaneously, but
it does not mean that we should not learn anything to make us become better. We can learn the 4
virtues to inspire ourselves, to make ourselves become a righteous people.
We should not force ourselves to do things when we are not yet ready. We cannot force ourselves to
finish it if we do not have any idea or preparation of it. We could only give a perfect ending if we
are well prepared for it. This is the truth that we cannot deny. If we are not yet ready for it, just let it
go, if you have the ability, you would get it again in the future. However, if you are not ready and
you force yourselves to do, this would actually make things

Similarities Between Confucianism And Taoism
Confucianism and Taoism are two well known philosophies from China. Created by Confucius and
Lao–tzu, these ideas have developed side by side for more than 2,000 years. Throughout history,
these two frames of mind have guided large regions of the world at different times. In American
society, these two ideologies would produce very different results should they be implemented.
Although they do have certain similarities, Confucianism's values of Filial Piety and Humaneness
would be very beneficial to American society while Taoism's principals of inaction and
individualized independence would be detrimental.
The philosophies of Confucianism and Taoism both share many attributes, many of which are based
around their ideological purposes. Confucianism and Taoism were both created during the warring
state period in China, between 600–400 BCE. This is significant because China was in a state of
dissension. Because of this, Lao–tzu and Confucius were looking to bring peace to the empire with a
set of common values. Both philosophies believed in the importance of education. Confucianism
supported a standardized system while observers of Taoism looked for a self–led approach to
learning. In addition, Lao–tzu and Confucius each advocated a life of respect. Though Confucianism
and Taoism had many similarities, their key differences set their function in modern society apart.
If implemented, Confucianism would create a very different American society than what is currently
functioning. Confucianism revolves around two main values. These are Filial Piety and
Humaneness. Filial piety is characterized by respect for one's parents, elders, and ancestors. In his
script; The Analects, Confucius writes "Few of those who are filial sons and respectful brothers will
show disrespect to superiors, and there has never been a man who is respectful to superiors and yet
creates disorder. A superior man is devoted to the fundamental. When the root is firmly established,
the moral law will grow. Filial piety and brotherly respect are the root of humanity."(Analects 1:2).
In current American culture, people are losing touch with their families. In this country, family is
rarely part of one's identity. Confucianism would restore

The Two Chinese Philosophies Of Confucianism
The two Chinese philosophies of Legalism and Confucianism could not be more opposite. Even
though two of the writers of Legalism were students of Xinzu, a philosopher of Confucianism, there
are more of differences than similarities between the two. Because of this, legalism, which preceded
the concept of Confucianism, had a lot of reasons why Confucianism was considered wrong. While
towards the fall of the Qin Dynasty, Confucian beliefs started to revamp and become more widely
accepted and thus they were blended together to some extent, this was not the case beforehand, in
fact it could be argued that blending the two together seemed almost impossible. Confucianism
stressed the ideas of the knowledge, humaneness, and filial piety while legalism stressed power,
rewards and punishments, and agricultural wealth. Thus from a legalist standpoint, Confucianism
was considered wrong because it placed value on virtues instead of the laws, focusing on education
to prosper growth and moral character instead of simply obeying societal laws and valuing
agricultural wealth rather than humaneness Thus differences far exceed similarities between these
two ancient beliefs. However, both have made everlasting marks on Chinese culture and tradition
that to this day still exists.
Here is my suggestion for a more succinct and focused intro, deleting what you have above:

Filial Piety In Confucian Ideology
In Confucian ideology, filial piety is perhaps the most sacred of traditions. This concept literally
refers to the virtue of respecting one's parents, elders, and one's ancestors. However, filial piety was
not limited to the familial sphere: it was also meant to serve as a model for organizing society. The
earliest records defining filial piety's significance in Confucian ideology can be traced to a text from
the third–fourth century B.C.E., The Canon of Filial Piety. Throughout succeeding eras and
dynasties, this work had been consistently regarded as the official source on the subject. The text
recounts a conversation between Confucius (referred to as "the Master") and one of his disciples,
Zeng Zi (referred to as "Master Zeng"). Confucius explains to Zeng Zi that ... Show more content on

Following the initial conversation between Confucius and Zeng Zi, Confucius subsequently
provides guidelines of how to act filially for people of different positions in society. These include
the common people, ministers, feudal lords, the Shi (scholars), and even the Son of Heaven. In each
case, no matter the position, Confucius strongly advocates for people to "revere their parents."
Additionally people will indirectly honor their parents by acting decently towards others: "those
who love their parents dare not be hateful to others" (Mair, Steinhardt, Goldin, 107). Confucius
elaborated on other concepts relating to filial piety and their value within society. Regarding "The
Essential Way" and "Utmost Virtue," there is "nothing more efficacious" to teach the people of
"intimacy and love" than filial piety. Through these teachings of respect for their parents, the people
learn to revere authority figures. Therefore they will come to respect the emperor and other rulers.
However, Confucius makes clear that a child is not acting filially if they

Confucianism And Human Rights
Confucianism is an ideology that can be applied to human rights. The reason behind this thought, is
that Confucianism accepts, and provides corrections to many of the same issues that human rights
face. Education is one example of a deep concern that human rights activists campaign for, but it is
a fundamental component in Confucian thought. Confucius thinkers like Xunzi, Kongzi, and
Mengzi are all Confucius thinkers who promote and encourage education for all. Therefore,
Confucianism can be applied to human rights rhetoric, it can especially be connected to human
rights documents like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on
Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights.
The right to education has been recognized as a human right in a number of international
conventions, including the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights. The
right to education is in section 26 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and found in
articles 13 and 14 of the international Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights. Section
26 states that "education shall be directed to the full development of the human personality and to
the strengthening of respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms. It shall promote
understanding, tolerance and friendship among all nations, racial or religious groups, and shall

Aristotle versus Confucius Essay
Philosophy can best be described as an abstract, scholarly discourse. According to the Greek,
philosophia refers to 'love of knowledge'. This is an aspect that has involved a great number of
clever minds in the world's history. They have sought to deal with issues surrounding the character
of veracity and significantly exploring the endeavors to respond to these issues. This paper seeks to
compare and contrast the philosophy of Aristotle with that of Confucius. This is with a clear
concentration on the absolute functions of these philosophies and how they take care of the

Availability and understanding of available information by an individual was taken as a very
important treasure. The issues that Confucius taught to be followed were not entirely scientific
learning but rather the study of the consecrated contents and the tenets of good worth and propriety
(Oliver, 1985). An additional element which he held high was the control of proper example. The
heroes, heroines and great people that existed were greatly exemplified by Confucius. Confucius did
this by persisting on the scrutiny of the conservative models. Many of his well recorded aphorisms
are tributes of his considered men of high caliber. Confucius trained his supporters the significance
of constantly welcoming the rectification of personal liabilities. To further assist in the creation of
an upright moral fiber, he cherished a particular amount of strength of will. He acknowledged the
threat, particularly in the youthful, of falling into unwanted behavior, so he persisted on eradicating
the push for uncalled for reassurances (Ferguson, 1972). As a basis for the existence in perfect
integrity, Confucius persisted mainly on the four qualities of naturalness, filial piousness, and
decorum. Honesty was a fundamental virtue. It really impacted more than a sheer societal relation.
Sincerity also intended to be frank and simple in rhetoric, sincere to one's undertakings and to be

Differences between Confucian and Buddhist Concept in Filial Piety
1. Background of Filial Piety in Chinese Society
Filial piety is a primary and comprehensive concept which plays a significant role in Chinese
history. The explanation of filial piety is "to treat parents well" in Er Ya(Su 2007,10)which is the
earliest monograph in semantic interpretation. Filial piety is not only the foundation and practical
staring point of all Chinese society relationships, but the root and essence of education and social
norm as well. As for the mainstream of Chinese traditional culture, no matter Buddhism or
Confucianism, filial piety is an important concept in both thoughts. The two schools both encourage

Tian Di Guan Jing mentioned that: one needs to repay parent's debt, all living beings' debt, king's
debt, three jewel's debt (Su 2007). This combination constitutes the system of repaying debt in
Buddhism. Among the four types of debt, debt of parents has the closest relationship with us. In
Buddhism thought, love from mother is the most important, however, we can never repay this kind
of selfless love. That is to say, the essence of filial piety in Buddhism is repaying parents' debt.
Compared with Buddhism, filial piety in Confucian thought is more closely related to society. There
is a famous assertion in Confucianism which is: self–cultivation, family harmony, state governing
and world peace (Si Shu Wu Jing). Etiquette idea in Confucianism is used to maintain the
primogeniture system. The huge difference between Confucianism and Buddhism in that, in
Buddhism, filial piety is voluntary behavior and the essence of it is a kind of natural human feeling
coming from the bottom of one's heart without any utilitarian purpose. This is consistent with idea
of equality in Buddhist thought. However, in Confucianism, filial piety is regarded as a tool to
maintain the seniority and hierarchy in society which glosses over emotional

relativity of beauty, " People say that Mao Qiang and Lady Li are beautiful. But if fish saw them

animals do not have the same perspective of beauty that we do and may find her disgusting. He
links this to critique Mengzi's sprouts of virtue, saying that the sprouts of benevolence and
righteousness look at right and wrong objectively, while Zhuangzi believes that right and wrong are
relative to the perspective that you take. He believes that people who are perfected can shed their
perspective and see that there is no right or wrong, there just is, and once you can embrace it, you
can "mount the clouds and mists, straddle the sun and moon, and roam beyond the four seas. Death
and life make no difference to them, how much less the sprouts of benefit and harm" (217).

life of a Gentleman. Unfortunately, Confucius is remembered for sayings that have been attributed
to him, not for any writings that have been discovered. Although there are no survived writings by
Confucius, there are many by Hsun Tzu that are still accessible. Though some views on human
nature differ between the two philosophers, their values and ideas have helped create a generational
way of life for many people. An essential theme in ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
In such a concentric culture, it is imperative to be kind to unlikeable people, but to mainly focus on
the Good. Confucius said, "In the presence of a good man, think all the time how you may learn to
equal him. In the presence of a bad man, turn your gaze within" (IV, 17). It is inevitable that humans
who dislike each other will meet on occasion, yet a Confucian does not focus on his negative
emotions towards the other person. A Gentleman "whose heart is in the smallest degree set upon
Goodness will dislike no one" (IV, 3). This opposes the negative aspect of extreme individualism
seen in the West, which is that everyone feels hostile towards each other. People in the Far East do
not speak to each other in hateful ways, which is representative of their collective nature.
Confucianism and collectivism overlap in many ways, which is why both aspects of society are
important in the Far East. Confucius said, "The Gentleman by his culture collects friends about him,
and through these friends promotes Goodness" (XII, 24). It is very Good socially and personally to
not have an overly strong sense of self. For a Gentleman to be considered good, he must embody
positive characteristics, be kind to others, and be humble in his own self–opinion. Rituals are also
necessary in a Gentleman's life, because "in the usages of ritual it is harmony that is prized... If
things go amiss, he who

Impact Of Confucianism On Korea

  • 1. Impact Of Confucianism On Korea Although China's influence over Korea has waned severely since the dynastic years we find the Confucian system of virtues and behaviors, China's chief export from that time, still very much alive. Korea highly values the extended family, education, personal discipline and public order. In South Korea Confucian temples continue to be maintained throughout the country. The tenets of Confucianism are seen as antidotes to social ills and therefore education is thought of as a means of building character, not simply of intellectual formation. The values of Confucianism are promulgated throughout Korea in places as diverse as school, the office and the home. Television programs often portray Confucian merits such as filial piety and harmony. However ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Upon analyzing the Analects, we can describe filial piety as "not being disobedient" (Koh, 366). One's filial duties are clearly defined by Confucius and how to accomplish this is a large part of the text. According to Koh Eung–Kang, filial duty is departmentalized into three separate categories: mental care, physical care, and care after death (366). This special care can be interpreted as the concept of benevolence which was listed above as one of the five virtues, where familial care holds more weight than emotional attachment. Today, benevolence is still held in the highest regard, and children are still expected to do their filial duty and care for their parents. This is evident by the lack of nursing homes in Korea. Grandparents are expected to live with their children until the end of their natural lives. (Koh, Eun–Kang, Koh, Chin–Kang 2008: ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 2. Mohism and Mencius’ Thought Introduction to Classical Chinese Philosophy Instructor: Masayuki Sato Mid–Term Paper Question 1: Do you think which doctrine was really helpful for saving people from their destitute condition between Mohism and Mencius' thought, and why? When we put the two philosopher's thoughts together, we can see one striking commonality. Both of them were against aggressive way and emphasized the importance of caring for the welfare of the state's people. Ideologies that run in opposite directions also exist between the two thoughts. Eventually, it came down to how their teachings were carried out and their applicability to the lives of the lower class people, which determined which one of them, truly was the more helpful one. Mencius, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... In retrospect, as subtle and incongruent as certain Mohism principles might seem to be, its core principles and teachings appealed more to the people of that time. The practicality and applicability of Mohism served the people of that time better as they were aimed at changing their circumstances and improving their lives. His criticism of the excesses of the powerful made him a champion among the common people and became a "voice" for them. Question 2: Try to conjecture the reason that Confucianism has been so dominant for the ongoing two millennia of Chinese society and culture? The Analects, a record of the words, acts and discussions of Chinese philosopher Confucius and his disciples, has been said to be the "Bible" of the Chinese people. 2000 years on, it is still setting the standards for individual conducts, administration of governments and communities. How has his teachings inspired a way of life that has been so dominant until today? The growth and success of Chinese societies worldwide have bore testament to his teachings. Confucian culture has outperformed others in more ways than one. When people see a correlation between gaining positive results and outcomes, and the practice of his philosophy, the belief grows. As a result of this, people continue to believe and attempt to live by his philosophies, in the hope of attaining the same success. To understand how Confucius could make such a change in China we

  • 4. Differences Of Han Feizi And Confucianism Chinese philosophy is dominated by a set of so–called Confucian values. These values, inherent in Chinese thought, were pushed forward by Confucius himself during his life time in an effort to propose a better, guided way of leadership. While Confucian values stress the naturally good nature of man, they stand in direct opposition to the writings of Han Feizi, a legalist philosopher under the first emperor of China. For the Legalists, the nature of man must be stressed as evil, and combatted under that assumption. Han Feizi and Confucius take two different stances regarding man's true nature, and in these differing stances propose varying guidelines for how a state and its leader should act. Confucianism, under the belief of limited action, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Within the Analects, one specific line stands out showing Confucius' stance on a less active government. When asking about what they would do if given a political office, Confucius only agree with the following statement ushered by Tseng His, "In the late spring when the spring dress is ready, I would like to go with five or six grown–ups and six or seven young boys to bathe in the I River, enjoy the breeze on the Rain Dance Altar, and then return home singing" (Chan p. 38). By agreeing, Confucius is noting the preferred method by which an office holder should act, one which amplifies their connection with inner harmony and helps the people enhance their own. This extends into the ruler himself as well, with Confucius noting that "If a ruler sets himself right, he will be followed without his command. If he does not set himself right, even his commands will not be obeyed" (Chan p. 41). Confucius also notes the superiority of filial piety and respect towards one's family over loyalty to the state, stating that in his (hypothetical) country upright men conceal the misconduct of their children and fathers even when against the law (Chan p. 41). Confucianism in relation to government shows the belief that the inherent goodness in men must be allowed to flourish, even when against ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...
  • 5. The Early Confucius And Modern Political Party This film likens the early Confucius philosophers to a modern political party. The three major Confucius philosophers, Confucius, Mencius and Xunzi, are all vying for the position of the leader of the Confucianist party, a center–right party who rules China in 2025. The three candidates have some differing views on the possible direction of the party and each have their own ideas about not only the way humanity is naturally or currently but they are also concerned with the way man should deal with conflict, self–cultivation and day to day life. The story is set during a time of much conflict and World War 3 has recently broken out after decades of turmoil. There is significant amount of worry among the general population and each leader wishes to ease this worry in a different way. The Confucianist party is an established party established by Confucius to promote his ideology and desires for the nations. • 8. Confusion About Confucianism : Everything Is One Confusion about Confucianism: Everything is one As Confucius said, "Virtue is not left to stand alone. He who practices it will have neighbors." How can one affect the others? What will be lost if one element is missing? In Confucianism, there are the five constants (Ren, Yi, Zhi, Xin, and Li), each correlates with others; however, the main focus is the practice of Ren and Filial Piety, which can transform us into Jun Zi. Confucius suggests that all practices are related to each other, and missing any elements will fail to become a Jun Zi (the ultimate goal). The practice of Ren promotes the how we should treat each other with love, however, unlike Mohism, Confucianism believe there should not be universal love, we should love based on who they are. Furthermore, filial piety, the love toward parents and family, remarks the importance of Ren and the theme of Confucianism. Li, the practice of caring for others, concludes the significant to become a Jun Zi. Even though there is no explicit definition for love in general, combining all three practices will certainly demonstrates an all–around love, which is the trait of Jun Zi. Furthermore, the importance of filial piety contributes how traditional Chinese view relationship and marriage, which still exist in some families. • 10. Confucianism And The Chinese Culture Essay Confucianism has been known to be the binding factor for much of China's history. Though the founder of Confucianism has no official title or record, the inspiration of these teachings, Confucius, was the guiding factor for change in China set forth by his understanding of environment and needs of his country's future. Due to the acceptance and immersion of Confucianism with in the Chinese culture, much of Confucius' teachings has found themselves religiously embedded in its entirety, not only within day–to–day life, but with the political and holistic venues. _____Confucius was a man who lived during the Warring States period. This was mainly during the Zhou dynasty. What he experienced in his day–to–day life consisted of warfare and strife, driven by selfish, greedy, and acquisitive impulses. Moments of disharmony amongst families and communities, due to interpersonal conflict and social inequalities, and religious and moral decline with the intent of using it against their own people for political gain and misuse. As central power weakened, feudal lords held more power than kings of the central court, minsters assassinated their rulers, and sons killed their fathers. _____Much of what he witnesses during this time becomes indoctrinated into the moral fibers of Confucianism as actions one shouldn't do. During his lifetime, Confucius crossed neighboring states trying to preach and hope for head officials to pick up his newfound way of ceasing chaos amongst the states. ... I argue that human nature is not, as Mengzi believes, inherently good, instead, completely self– interested. The Confucian philosopher, Mengzi, asserts that humans have instincts by nature that tend toward goodness. Meaning, because human have virtuous instincts, human nature is good. It is "kill or be killed, eat or be eaten," (London) because the cold, the wind, the snow, does not care about the wellbeing of man, nor understand humans needs to survive. So, when Mengzi uses metaphors depicting nature as a whole and glorious thing, I disagree. Mengzi believes that nature is good and therefore human nature is good, yet nature is actually savage. Almost all of Jack London's novels describe the ruthlessness of nature describing nature laughing, "a laughter that was mirthless as the smile of the Sphinx, a laughter cold as the frost and partaking of the grimness of infallibility" (London). Nature is teasing people and pulling them into the brutal wild. If nature does not care about humans and is ruthless, then human nature is the same way. Humans have instincts which help them survive; that is human nature. This is the reason the human race has conquered the globe. Unlike what Mengzi believes, just like the wild, human's brains are hardwired to survive, and our actions are completely self–interested. With the example of the child falling into the well, Mengzi asserts that our impulse to save the child stems from human's sprout of compassion. However, I agree with Hobbes that "[w]arre, where every man is Enemy to every man," (Schwitzgebel) and the only reason human's instinct to save, is because our brains are hard–wired to keep the human race living. However, it was also a great period for the philosophy of Confucianism, with the teachings of Mencius and Hsun Tzu to lead the way for their lost followers. According to Hsun Tzu and Mencius, human beings give birth to their children with a sense of an inherent reaction to life. These familiar bonds of filial piety would continue to stabilize their economic status, and create a new social infrastructure that would encompass a similar moral code. According to Mencius, hungry people cannot be moral people, and this economic system would have been effective in unifying the people if people heeded his warnings about the destabilizing morality and political structures. Mencius, though, had numerous flaws in his philosophy, because his arguments were based on contradictions and vacuity. The political system based on the lessening of the repercussions of laws and lessening taxes by a benevolent rule lead by virtue was the pivotal aspect of his argument that a good natured ruler would be rewarded with obedient subjects. • 16. The Confucian Concept Of Authority Essay The Confucian concept of authority is exemplified through the teachings of the Way of Heaven and filial piety. In Confucius's thought, authority is described as something that manifests the power to enforce obedience; anything of authority encourages, or demands, people to live a specific way. This obedience constructs a notion of hierarchy within relationships and implies an obstinate expectation for reverence and devotion. Through the teachings of the Way and filial piety, people are advised to behave in a specified manner that is supposedly appropriate; however, these "rules" epitomize the exercise of power and demand for obedience. Authority in Confucius's teachings of the Way of Heaven and filial piety should not define appropriate structures of relationships between a Lord and his people, a Master and his disciple, or a father and his son, because the authority abusively demands submission. The Way of Heaven, as described in The Essential Analects, commands for a specific structure of a state. "In a state that has the Way, to be poor and of low status is a cause for shame; in a state that is without the Way, to be wealthy and honored is equally a cause for shame" (8.13). The Way is a source of authority within the state; the Way is the key to virtue. The admirable ideals of virtue encourage people to the lifestyle commanded by the Way. If a person is living in accordance with the Way, it is shameful to be poor or discontent; people who understand the Way would exhibit ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Mencius vs. Confucius I think that Confucius was more correct in his views than Mencius, not because of differing views (although they did differ at certain points), but because of the way these ideas were carried out throughout his career, and ultimately, his life. Confucius was a Chinese thinker and philosopher. His philosophy emphasized personal and governmental morality, correctness of social relationships, and justice and sincerity. These values gained prominence in China over other doctrines, such as Taoism during the Han Dynasty. Confucius' thoughts have been developed into a system of philosophy which has come to be known as Confucianism. The passage conveys the lesson that by not asking about the horses, Confucius demonstrated that a sage values humans over property. Readers of this lesson are led to think about whether their response would follow Confucius's, and to pursue self–improvement if it would not. Confucius, a great example of human excellence, uses himself as the ultimate model, rather than a deity or a universally true set of abstract principles. For these reasons Confucius's teaching may be considered a Chinese example of humanism. Perhaps his most famous teaching was the Golden Rule stated in the negative form, often called the Silver Rule: "Zi Gong (a disciple of Confucius) asked: 'Is there any one word that could guide a person throughout life?' The Master replied: 'How about reciprocity: never impose on others what you would not choose for yourself?'" (Analects, David Hinton translation). Confucius's teachings were later turned into a long set of rules and practices by his numerous followers who organized his teachings into the Analects. Rebelliousness against what is expected leads to breakthroughs and if one is forced to listen to his parents and carry out their wishes, they will not be able to do so. There have been many instances of those who have spoken out against authoritative figures for their own rights, and because of this, their lives were able to change for the better. Parents should be a guide, but the deference that the youth is expected to have will make them into a mere extension of their parents, with no independent thought for themselves, knowledge of how to think for their own or speak up against what is wrong. Therefore, one should be wary of absolute filial piety as seen in countries that adopt Confucian philosophies; freedom is not as attainable as in the West. In addition, Confucianism does not place importance on the role of the female in society. Modern Western philosophy is very egocentric and the rights of each individual matters. Confucian scholars usually discuss three of them: the dichotomy between human being and other animals, between righteousness and interests, and between kingship and hegemony. In the first, Mencius indicated that human being is fundamentally different from other animals because of the four moral beginnings in the heart. In the second, he pointed out that righteousness is primarily valuable compared to mere self interests. However, it is not the logic that if one is natural to have desires, then one can and should freely satisfy them. There, he mentioned the notion of mandate. A superior man knows that the human nature is different from the mandate, so he will consider the satisfaction of the nature to desire in terms of heavenly restrictions. For instance, everyone desires delicious food, but it is not the case that everyone has a chance to eat the tasty dishes. And in most cases, one cannot fulfil all the desires, as desires themselves are infinitely deep, and the objective resources and human capacities are finite. Besides, as human being, we have more than mere biological nature to satisfy, and that is also a part of our human nature: the moral nature. This is clearly revealed in the debate between Mencius and Gaozi about the essence of human nature. Gaozi said: "Life is what we call nature. (Gaozi)" Clearly, this refers to the biological nature, which Mencius had differentiated from the mandate. So he replied with an argument: "Is the nature of a dog like the nature of an ox, and the nature of an ox like the nature of a man? • 28. Similarities Between Confucianism And Taoism Confucianism and Taoism are two well known philosophies from China. Created by Confucius and Lao–tzu, these ideas have developed side by side for more than 2,000 years. Throughout history, these two frames of mind have guided large regions of the world at different times. In American society, these two ideologies would produce very different results should they be implemented. Although they do have certain similarities, Confucianism's values of Filial Piety and Humaneness would be very beneficial to American society while Taoism's principals of inaction and individualized independence would be detrimental. The philosophies of Confucianism and Taoism both share many attributes, many of which are based around their ideological purposes. Confucianism and Taoism were both created during the warring state period in China, between 600–400 BCE. This is significant because China was in a state of dissension. Because of this, Lao–tzu and Confucius were looking to bring peace to the empire with a set of common values. Both philosophies believed in the importance of education. Confucianism supported a standardized system while observers of Taoism looked for a self–led approach to learning. In addition, Lao–tzu and Confucius each advocated a life of respect. Though Confucianism and Taoism had many similarities, their key differences set their function in modern society apart. If implemented, Confucianism would create a very different American society than what is currently functioning. Confucianism revolves around two main values. These are Filial Piety and Humaneness. Filial piety is characterized by respect for one's parents, elders, and ancestors. In his script; The Analects, Confucius writes "Few of those who are filial sons and respectful brothers will show disrespect to superiors, and there has never been a man who is respectful to superiors and yet creates disorder. A superior man is devoted to the fundamental. When the root is firmly established, the moral law will grow. Filial piety and brotherly respect are the root of humanity."(Analects 1:2). You see Mulan speak out once again when one of the Emperors council members comes to the town and notifies the families that one man from each family is to serve in the Emperors army to fight against the Hans that have invaded China. By Mulan speaking her mind she disgraces her and her family. Also, when she joins the Emperors army, even though she is doing it to save her father's life, it against the law and the penalty is ... • 30. The Two Chinese Philosophies Of Confucianism The two Chinese philosophies of Legalism and Confucianism could not be more opposite. Even though two of the writers of Legalism were students of Xinzu, a philosopher of Confucianism, there are more of differences than similarities between the two. Because of this, legalism, which preceded the concept of Confucianism, had a lot of reasons why Confucianism was considered wrong. While towards the fall of the Qin Dynasty, Confucian beliefs started to revamp and become more widely accepted and thus they were blended together to some extent, this was not the case beforehand, in fact it could be argued that blending the two together seemed almost impossible. Confucianism stressed the ideas of the knowledge, humaneness, and filial piety while legalism stressed power, rewards and punishments, and agricultural wealth. Thus from a legalist standpoint, Confucianism was considered wrong because it placed value on virtues instead of the laws, focusing on education to prosper growth and moral character instead of simply obeying societal laws and valuing agricultural wealth rather than humaneness Thus differences far exceed similarities between these two ancient beliefs. However, both have made everlasting marks on Chinese culture and tradition that to this day still exists. Here is my suggestion for a more succinct and focused intro, deleting what you have above: The two Chinese philosophies of Legalism and Confucianism could not be more opposite. • 31. Filial Piety In Confucian Ideology In Confucian ideology, filial piety is perhaps the most sacred of traditions. This concept literally refers to the virtue of respecting one's parents, elders, and one's ancestors. However, filial piety was not limited to the familial sphere: it was also meant to serve as a model for organizing society. The earliest records defining filial piety's significance in Confucian ideology can be traced to a text from the third–fourth century B.C.E., The Canon of Filial Piety. Throughout succeeding eras and dynasties, this work had been consistently regarded as the official source on the subject. The text recounts a conversation between Confucius (referred to as "the Master") and one of his disciples, Zeng Zi (referred to as "Master Zeng"). Confucius explains to Zeng Zi that ... Following the initial conversation between Confucius and Zeng Zi, Confucius subsequently provides guidelines of how to act filially for people of different positions in society. These include the common people, ministers, feudal lords, the Shi (scholars), and even the Son of Heaven. In each case, no matter the position, Confucius strongly advocates for people to "revere their parents." Additionally people will indirectly honor their parents by acting decently towards others: "those who love their parents dare not be hateful to others" (Mair, Steinhardt, Goldin, 107). Confucius elaborated on other concepts relating to filial piety and their value within society. Regarding "The Essential Way" and "Utmost Virtue," there is "nothing more efficacious" to teach the people of "intimacy and love" than filial piety. Through these teachings of respect for their parents, the people learn to revere authority figures. Therefore they will come to respect the emperor and other rulers. • 34. Confucianism And Human Rights Confucianism is an ideology that can be applied to human rights. The reason behind this thought, is that Confucianism accepts, and provides corrections to many of the same issues that human rights face. Education is one example of a deep concern that human rights activists campaign for, but it is a fundamental component in Confucian thought. Confucius thinkers like Xunzi, Kongzi, and Mengzi are all Confucius thinkers who promote and encourage education for all. Therefore, Confucianism can be applied to human rights rhetoric, it can especially be connected to human rights documents like the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and the International Covenant on Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights. The issues that Confucius taught to be followed were not entirely scientific learning but rather the study of the consecrated contents and the tenets of good worth and propriety (Oliver, 1985). An additional element which he held high was the control of proper example. The heroes, heroines and great people that existed were greatly exemplified by Confucius. Confucius did this by persisting on the scrutiny of the conservative models. Many of his well recorded aphorisms are tributes of his considered men of high caliber. Confucius trained his supporters the significance of constantly welcoming the rectification of personal liabilities. To further assist in the creation of an upright moral fiber, he cherished a particular amount of strength of will. He acknowledged the threat, particularly in the youthful, of falling into unwanted behavior, so he persisted on eradicating the push for uncalled for reassurances (Ferguson, 1972). As a basis for the existence in perfect integrity, Confucius persisted mainly on the four qualities of naturalness, filial piousness, and decorum. Honesty was a fundamental virtue. It really impacted more than a sheer societal relation. Sincerity also intended to be frank and simple in rhetoric, sincere to one's undertakings and to be very assiduous in the offering of one's responsibilities to other people (Benjamin, ... He links this to critique Mengzi's sprouts of virtue, saying that the sprouts of benevolence and righteousness look at right and wrong objectively, while Zhuangzi believes that right and wrong are relative to the perspective that you take. He believes that people who are perfected can shed their perspective and see that there is no right or wrong, there just is, and once you can embrace it, you can "mount the clouds and mists, straddle the sun and moon, and roam beyond the four seas. Death and life make no difference to them, how much less the sprouts of benefit and harm" (217). Embracing the subjectivity of perspective is liberating and allows one to view the world much ... Confucius focused his beliefs around the roles of Filial Piety, Rites, and Goodness in the life of a Gentleman. Unfortunately, Confucius is remembered for sayings that have been attributed to him, not for any writings that have been discovered. Although there are no survived writings by Confucius, there are many by Hsun Tzu that are still accessible. Confucius said, "In the presence of a good man, think all the time how you may learn to equal him. In the presence of a bad man, turn your gaze within" (IV, 17). It is inevitable that humans who dislike each other will meet on occasion, yet a Confucian does not focus on his negative emotions towards the other person. A Gentleman "whose heart is in the smallest degree set upon Goodness will dislike no one" (IV, 3). This opposes the negative aspect of extreme individualism seen in the West, which is that everyone feels hostile towards each other. People in the Far East do not speak to each other in hateful ways, which is representative of their collective nature. Confucianism and collectivism overlap in many ways, which is why both aspects of society are important in the Far East. Confucius said, "The Gentleman by his culture collects friends about him, and through these friends promotes Goodness" (XII, 24).
