Spirit bear(Kermode Bear)
Kermode bears today are very rare to find. Human Beings are going out to find a Kermode bear you
will probably not find one. However, these bears are really rare off the coast of the Princess Royal
and Gribbell island. Nearly 100 black, white bears exist on this big and beautiful world. This type of
bears are nearly extinct, Because people try to hunt the extinct animals. Black white bears have a
rare double recessive gene in it's body. This is how people have the white and black fur. When 2
parents have the same recessive gene the result is white fur for their young. A lot people think that
these bears are Polar Bears or even Albino's, but they are just Kermode Bears. Twenty percent of the

It was a Kermode bear. You aren't allowed to hunt them, just allowed to see. 200 miles northwest of
Orr, Minnesota a black, white bear was also found. When they found the bear genetics were never
studied. To this day they still haven't studied the black, white bear's genetics. Then another Kermode
bear was found in 2004 300 miles northwest of Beausejour near Cedar Lake, Manitoba. This cub
was named Maskwa, also it also carried the same genetics that black, white bears have to this day.
So to this day there are less than 100 Kermode bears alive and wealthy on this humble earth.
Scientist have also figured out many reasons why Kermode bears are dying out, is because they use
them for fur and a coat which is really bad because humans also are allergic or can't have them
because of other reasons.
Why is the fur of the Kermode bear always black white type? Use cite evidence to support your

Snowshoe Hare Research Paper
The snowshoe hare is an important consumer in the ANWR food chain. Without it, top predators
such as the brown bear would lack an important food source. The snowshoe hare is an herbivore.
Like all herbivores, it eats only plants. Some plants that the snowshoe hare eats are the reindeer
lichen, the arctic willow, and the arctic sedge. In the ANWR, it is important that the snowshoe hare
has useful adaptations since it lives in the tundra, one of the world's toughest biomes to survive in.
Its signature adaptation is its ability to change color. During the winter, its coat is white as snow,
which helps it blend in with its tundra habitat. During the spring and summer, its fur changes
reddish–brown, which helps it blend with the dirt and mud that is common in the tundra during and
after the period ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Toxic chemicals caused by pollution may harm or kill the snowshoe hare. The snowshoe hare may
develop chronic respiratory diseases or lung cancer. This is also a threat for the snowshoe hare's
predators as well since toxic chemicals built up in the snowshoe hare may render the snowshoe hare
unsafe to eat. Freshwater may also be poisoned by the toxins, which the snowshoe hare needs.
Regulations may or may not be established to protect the snowshoe hare if oil drilling is established.
The snowshoe hare will most certainly be protected if the oil drilling plan is canceled. The snowshoe
hare needs protection due to its sheer importance in the ecosystem's food web. Humans, by oil
drilling, will negatively impact not only the snowshoe hare, but one of the world's greatest arctic
wildlife reserves. Protecting the snowshoe hare will also increase biodiversity in the ecosystem.
Humanity should be careful about fossil fuel exploration and not squander its precious wildlife
refuges. By doing this, it can ensure that ANWR– and its unique snowshoe hare– lives on for future

Seasonal Lethargy: The American Black Bear
Highly adaptable and with varied food tastes, the American black bear inhabits a wide range of
habitats, including scrub, swamps, and dense forests. The black bear is the smallest, most common
bear in North America. There colours vary between black, brown and blonde. They are omnivores
and up to 85% of their diet is vegetation.
Black Bears are not hibernators, but they do become a lot less active and go into a dormant state
during the winter months. This is referred to Seasonal Lethargy. Black bears enter their dens in
October and November. Before to that time, they can put on up to 30 pounds of body fat to get them
through the seven months during which they fast. Winter dormancy in Black Bears typically lasts 3–
5 months. They spend their time

The Negative Effects Of Oil Drilling
As polar ice in the Arctic region melts, there are many implications associated with it. The melting
ice opens up sea lanes, providing access to priceless natural resources, such as the estimated 90
billion barrels of the world's undiscovered oil (Karaim 336). For the United States, this is a great
opportunity. Access to these energy reserves would open up expansion of the oil industry, which
advocates of oil drilling say will lead to extensive economic development (Karaim 335) in northern
Alaska and the rest of the Arctic region. However, scientists caution that an increase in oil drilling
will have destructive effects on the environment. Increased greenhouse gas pollution from oil
drilling facilitate global warming, which will melt even more polar ice, absorbing more sunlight and
harming vivid Arctic ecosystems. The higher risk for oil spills will harm marine wildlife, which
translates to harming the indigenous Arctic peoples. Their diets will be altered, new diseases will be
introduced, and the changing of the Arctic land will restrict their rich cultural traditions and
lifestyles. Although oil drilling will facilitate economic development in the Arctic, it should not be
continued because its implementation is not sustainable for the environment, nor does it improve the
lifestyles of the indigenous Arctic peoples.
One concern that scientists have regarding oil drilling in the Arctic is the perpetuation of climate
change that comes along with it. Expansion of the oil

Global Warming Should Be The Paramount Struggle Of Our Time
It is often said that humans are the largest threat to Earth, but not because of violence between one
another. Humans are the largest threat to Earth because we as a species pollute the air, land, and
water of the very planet we call home. Without Earth all life as we know it will cease to exist.
Global warming is the product of the pollutants created by mankind. If mankind as a whole does not
change its ways we will ruin our one and only planet that is suitable to sustain life. In Warm,
Warmer, Warmest an article by Nicholas D. Kristof argues that that "stopping global warming
should be the paramount struggle of our time"(Warmer). While researching this topic I used multiple
resources to better understand what Nicholas Kristof is explaining in his article. I first looked at a
government run website that helped explain global warming and how it is affecting us today. Then I
looked at news articles from different news organizations. Lastly I watched a video that explained
why we can no longer ignore global warming. All of those resources helped me better understand
my research topic and I feel that I have gained more knowledge about global warming. Warm,
Warmer, Warmest is an article written by Nicholas D. Kristof that states that global warming is the
biggest problem humans face today. Warm, Warmer, Warmest an article in the book Science and
Society by Nicholas D. Kristof a New York Times columnist, Harvard graduate, and retired Portland

Polar Ice Caps Melting
In this essay I express how the melting of the polar ice caps in the North Pole is affecting the
survival of habitats of organisms around the world. The common misconception is that only polar
bears are suffering from global warming. Because of rapid climate change in multiple areas around
the globe, many organisms are unable to live in their normal habitat. They are unable to adapt to
these new conditions as fast as they are changing. There are many effects of global warming that is
affecting the livelihood of many animals and in this essay I will explain how the effects are hurting
the earth's population of animals.
What is Global Warming? Global warming is a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the
earth's atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon
dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants. The Green House Effect is the process in which
the absorption and emission of infrared radiation by gases in the atmosphere warm a planet's lower
atmosphere and surface. These greenhouse gases traps some of the heat emitted by the Earth. The
problem with global warming is that is an anthropomorphic problem. The human race is polluting
and misusing our earth. The people here on earth have substantially increased the quantity of CO2 in
the atmosphere. This is a result of burning fossil fuels, coal, oil and gas emissions from automobiles.
The quantity of CO2 36%is higher than in preindustrial times. The more

Decision Making On Black Carbon Mitigation
Decision–Making on Black Carbon Mitigation
Introduction
There have been myriad of findings over the past couple of years suggesting that climate change
may be happening far faster than we originally anticipated. Climate change has the potential to
trigger abrupt transitions such as the release of carbon from thawing permafrost, ocean acidification,
sea level rise, and biodiversity loss. The world has warmed by about 1.5°F, and by 2100 it is
projected to rise another 2 to 11.5°F (Karl et al., 2009). Scientists conclude that greenhouse gases
(GHG) from anthropogenic sources are the most significant driver of observed climate change
(IPCC 2013). GHG have the property of absorbing the infrared radiation given off by the Earth and
re–emitting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
BC has a short atmospheric residence time of days to weeks, while long‐lived GHGs can persist in
the atmosphere for centuries. Therefore, reductions in GHG emissions will take longer to influence
atmospheric concentrations and will have less impact on climate on a short timescale, whereas
reductions in current BC emissions are immediate (Bice et al., 2009). Apart from that, some
scientists (Shindell & Faluvegi 2009, Ramanathan & Feng 2009, Quinn et al. 2008, Jacobson 2010)
attribute up to 50% of arctic ice melting to BC emissions, therefore its emissions reductions can
substantially decrease the rate at which arctic ice is melting. Thus, initiatives focused on lowering
BC will help offset the impact of decades of GHG emissions and give efforts to reduce carbon
dioxide (CO2) emissions time to get off the ground. It's worth mentioning that BC also has adverse
effect on human health, such as premature mortality, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and
development of chronic respiratory disease, so targeting BC emissions will be beneficial from the
public health standpoint (EPA 2011).
Bringing black carbon into climate strategy offers a complementary route to act on climate change,
but the scientific understanding of black carbon climate effects isn't fully complete to support this
proposition. On the one hand, there's a group of scientists who conclude that BC is one of the most
important human emission in terms of its climate forcing in current atmosphere, as it

Global Warming Is Not Real Research Paper
Although some people think that Global Warming is real because of the temperature rising in the
earth's atmosphere, I have reasons why global warming doesn't exist. Scientist who believe global
warming is real, their predictions about it have been proven wrong. Some scientist predicted that the
temperature would increase dramatically, but the temperature has stayed the same ever since. I am
against global warming because I don't think global warming exist. In the next few paragraphs, I
will be explaining my reasons on why I am against global warming. Then I will be addressing the
other side's argument. And finally I will be doing a conclusion paragraph and call to action. Global

been a significant temperature change, and arctic ice has been increasing. Predictions like increase
of arctic ice and increase of temperature change have been proven wrong. Scientist said that there
would be a significant temperature change, but it's been at a normal average temperature. Last is,
arctic ice has been increasing. People predicted that arctic ice would be gone but it has been

Research Paper On Polar Bears
Polar Bears have become one of the most well–known and protected species over the course of the
last ten years, but still so few people understand how amazing these creatures truly are. The
scientific name for the polar bear is Ursus Martimus. Though Polar Bears are part of the bear family
they do have some differences. Polar bears can only be found in the Artic, the northernmost part of
the Earth. The ground in the Artic is made of Permafrost, or ground that has been frozen at
temperatures of at least zero degrees Celsius (thirty–two degrees Fahrenheit) for two or more
consecutive years. It is home to approximately 1700 species of plants, but absolutely no trees. On

Similarities:
a) Both Arctic and Antarctica have glaciers, icebergs and snowstorms and receive the lowest
precipitation in the world.
b) Both the Arctic and Antarctica have seals, birds, and fish.
Differences:
c) Antarctica is colder and windier than in the Arctic. The lowest temperature ever measured, –
89.2°C, was registered Vostok in Antarctica on 21 July 1983 (Kranz). The positioning of the

Sea Ice: Important To The Environment
Have you ever wondered what some animals call home? If so, then the Sea Ice is the place to begin.
Researches have classified the ice into two categories: the Arctic section, and the Antarctic section.
The Arctic side is on an ocean, that is mostly surrounded by land. On the other side, the Arctic Side,
it is in the ocean surrounded by the land, but controls the "coldest darkest part of the Northern
Hemisphere." (P.12). Sea ice is important to the environment; it is important to the environment
because it releases nutrients into the water for animals to eat, is home to many species of animals,
and it creates a cap that keeps water from evaporating. In summer, the sea ice will partially melt.
When this partial melt occurs "the ice releases ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
When this partial melt occurs "the ice releases nutrients that some animals eat" (P.3). The nutrients
are the main food basis for the animals that call the ice home. The fauna, an animal that currently
resides in the sea ice, that eat these nutrients that are mainly pelagic life to them. Therefore, the
nutrients that the sea ice releases are very important to their everyday life, along with the other
creatures that reside there. Along with the fauna mentioned above, there are multiple types of
animals that call the sea ice their home. "The ice itself is also home of animals like seals, arctic
foxes, polar bears and penguins." (P.3). If taken into consideration, the sea ice is a highly beneficial
place to live in for these creatures; it provides shelter and food for the exotic animals. This shows
that many different types of animals live on the ice. Therefore, the sea ice is important to the
environment. "Sea ice also creates a cap on the ocean. This cap helps keep water from evaporating
into the atmosphere." (P.2). The weather takes the hit for this cap and becomes colder and drier in
the iced–covered areas. This cap, also prevents the water's heat from escaping, and being released
into the air, thus adding to global

A threatened species on the Endangered Species list, polar bears are often brought up when
discussing climate change and for good reason. Polar bears are entirely dependent on ice to live and
hunt. Regional temperatures effect when the ice breaks up and when it forms. Due to a rise of
temperature in the arctic regions, ice forms later, melts earlier and has a decreasing amount every
year. In the "Environment: Trends" section of the National Snow & Ice Data Center website, the
author states that, "Arctic ice has been decreasing at an average rate of about 3 percent per decade..."
This means that polar bears have to either move further north to the ice that doesn't melt, or move to
land. Either way the polar bear may have to starve until a ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net

According to Forcada and Trathan (2009, p.1), "Penguins are adapted to live in extreme
environments, but they can be highly sensitive to climate change, which disrupts penguin life history
strategies when it alters the weather, oceanography and critical habitats." Chinstrap penguins mainly
live on the Antarctic Peninsula, where climate change has hit the continent the hardest. (Barbosa,
Benzal, León, & Moreno 2012 p.1) Unlike the polar bear, the penguin does not have the luxury of
travelling between land and sea in search for a meal. Being a flightless bird, chinstrap penguins live
on the ice and hunt in the waters off the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. The chinstrap penguins'
main food source is a tiny crustacean named krill. Krill are also affected by ice melting earlier and
forming late. When the temperatures increase, the food that krill feed upon die, phytoplankton, die at
an increased rate. (Barbosa, et al., 2012 p.4) The krill population is also adversely affected by
increased whale and seal activity. (Barbosa, et al., 2012 p.4) When less ice, higher temperatures, less
food, and more competition add up, the chinstrap penguin suffers. A starving chinstrap penguin has
less of a chance to survive the howling Antarctic winds. If a starving chinstrap penguin manages to
make it through the winter, it will be severely impaired during the mating

Global Warming And Its Effects On The Planet Essay
As Albert Einstein said "Look deep into nature and then you will understand everything better". It
can be hard, but not impossible to understand more about this ever changing universe. Without a
doubt, our planet as we know was not the same a century ago and it will not be the same a decade
from now. Due to this perpetual evolution of our planet's natural cycles, its inhabitants are forced to
choose between adaption or extinction. Meanwhile, an invasive species, or humans, has started a
chain of disasters that are accelerating global changes and, in extension, the crucial selection of
existence. Over the years, the field of natural science has increased human knowledge regarding our
negative impact on the planet. Despite this, humans have taken minimal action towards addressing
the problem that, considered a myth by some, is global warming. Many of us take our planet for
granted, not realizing that, in of its own, it consist of one huge ecosystem relying on all of its parts
to function properly. Because of this interdependence, action must be taken to minimize and raise
awareness of global warming on the arctic region and its resulting effects on ecosystems around the
world. Occurring on the entire planet, global warming affects individual regions at different
intensity levels. Places covered in snow, like the Arctic, are being disturbed by the rising
temperature, resulting in a decrease of ice and an increase of liquid water. To illustrate the
immensity of this matter,

Comparing Dowell's Draft And Chimney Hollow
Discussion Importance values were calculated by combining the relative density, relative
dominance, and relative frequency of each tree species. The trees with the highest importance values
will be those that exist in the greatest number or are of the greatest size. The importance value
identifies the dominant species in a community that may have the greatest effect on the community,
thus hinting at the physical structure of a plant community. Once the importance values are found, a
community can be defined in terms of its most significant species. Within Dowell's Draft are eastern
white pine–pignut hickory–Virginia pine communities while Chimney Hollow is comprised of

Species richness is how many species are in a given area and species evenness looks at how equally
abundant each of the species are (Stirling and Wisley, 2007). By determining species richness and
evenness, we can compare biodiversity in different communities. Species richness was found by
simply totaling the number of tree species. As species evenness takes into account the relative
numbers of individuals of each species in a community as well as the number of species present, we
calculated it by dividing Shannon's diversity index 'H' by the natural logarithm of species richness.
As Dowell's Draft and Chimney Hollow vary greatly in microclimate most likely due to solar
radiation, we expected Dowell's Draft to exhibit greater biodiversity than Chimney Hollow. At
Dowell's Draft, the species richness is 9 and the species evenness is 0.9226 while in Chimney
Hollow, the species richness is 5 and the species evenness is 0.8283. Thus, our hypothesis is correct;
Dowell's Draft exhibited greater biodiversity than Chimney Hollow in both species richness and
evenness. Solar radiation may have factored into the difference in plant

The Last Winter Film Analysis
ABSTRACT
Environmental change is a severe issue in the world as many parts of the world strive towards
ensuring that the environment remains habitable and with minimal detrimental changes (Hamilton,
2011). Furthermore, environmental evolution is taught in most educational centers to ensure that
people understand how to conserve the environment. However, many people perceive it as a dull
subject and do not give it the attention it deserves; but this situation is changed by the number of
movies, documentaries, movies and TV series that have been made to explain the dangers or
benefits of environmental change more creatively.
This study will seek to describe one such movie and discuss the different factors, assumptions,
impacts, and scientific accuracies to the same regard. It will also put into consideration the truths,
consequences, and facts that have been portrayed in the movie. The Last Winter, whose release was
in 2007, is a movie that explains environmental changes based on global warming. Its effects and
shall discuss it and try to understand the angle that the producer took in conveying the ecological
change message as well as point out whether it provides a solution for the problem so discovered.

Canada to Greenland and onto the Svalbard archipelago. Adequate food and energy are the key for
polar bear to survival in the harsh arctic environment. In recent years, however, the polar bears have
faced enormous challenges in arctic, where they have no natural enemy. It is well known that the
normal temperature of human body is around 36.5 degree centigrade, sometimes, sudden illness
causes a rise in body temperature. Every sudden increase in temperature of human body is a threat to
human health. The same is happening with the global climate system. On the surface, the
temperature is just a fraction of degree centigrade but the air temperature can be changed very
severe during a certain period and it also causes a chain reaction of weather and climate. The
Intergovernmental panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports that since the industrial revolution, the
average temperatures of Earth surface has risen by 0.6 degree centigrade (Lisa V. Alexander).
Moreover, the rise in temperature is concentrated in recent decades, there has been an upward trend
of about 0.2 degrees Celsius per decade. Global warming has already affecting the Earth's
ecosystems. The polar bear was the first species be listed as a threatened species in the US under the
Endangered Species because of the threats

The Negative Effects Of Unnatural Weather Change
The atmosphere on the Earth is evolving. Ice age is interleaved with the a worldwide temperature
alteration. In the present age, the temperature of the Earth's atmosphere framework proceed quickly
increment and it prompts an unnatural weather change. An unnatural weather change is the
procedure of progressive development of normal yearly temperature of the air of the Earth and
World sea. The normal temperature on the Earth was expanded by 0.6C. There are different reasons
of a dangerous atmospheric devation, for example, human exercises, regular occasions, expanding
of gasses, for example, carbon dioxide in air and sun oriented action. Almost 200 nations have
marked Kyoto Protocol and they should lessen four nursery gasses, keeping in mind the end goal to
battle with a dangerous atmospheric devation. There are a few points of view about impacts of an
unnatural weather change on condition. In this exposition will be viewed as the effects and
outcomes of a dangerous atmospheric devation . All the while, it will be cleared up that there are
sure and negative effects of an unnatural weather change.
The negative side of an unnatural weather change is that it prompts softening of ice. The world's icy
masses, particularly Arctic ice sheets are liquefying speedier than new snow and ice can supplement
them. Amid the liquefying of Arctic ice opens over the dim surface of the water or soil and adjust
change reflects less and retain a more prominent measure of warmth, consequently,

Obsidian Energy Case Study
Obsidian Energy is a gas and oil producer of energy. It is located in Calgary, Canada. The company
showed increasingly exciting growth in the third quarter of the last year. The CEO David French
recently addressed the wells that were discovered in the Rocky Mountains of Western Canada. In
that comment, Finch added that there are three million acres of land included in that region. This is
encouraging news for the energy community. Obsidian Energy had begun exploration in the area
just this past year. The results of that exploration have been promising. So afar three wells have been
created that have produced 2,000 barrels of product per day. This equals 60 barrels of energy in the
form of oil each day. That has far exceeded the expectation

Polar Bears Research Paper
Summary Polar bears are an important arctic species that are in danger of extinction because of
climate change. Polar bears are known as a keystone species, meaning they have significant effect
on the environment in which they live. As such, keeping polar bears alive is essential for a balanced
ecosystem in the Arctic Circle. One of the major threats to polar bears is melting sea ice. As the
overall temperature of the earth increases due to global warming and the greenhouse effect, the sea
ice that polar bears live on for most of their lives is melting. Polar bears require sea ice to survive, as
it is their hunting grounds and habitat. When the ice melts, polar bears are forced to move closer to
the pole. Unfortunately, polar bears use northern ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
The first recommendation was to practice "sustainable harvesting" on polar bears. Polar bears are
hunted for food, for their fur, for sport, and for traditional practices by Native people. According to
Dr. Steven C. Amstrup, a chief scientist at Polar Bears International and a USGS polar bear project
leader in Alaska, he states that each native village is allowed to hunt a certain number of polar bears
which is governed by a quota system (Amstrup, n.d.). Polar bear hunting is currently managed in
Greenland, Alaska, and Canada (Sahanatien, et al., 2012, p. 398). Another recommendation was to
educate the natives on polar bears. Since polar bears are approaching human settlements, educating
the humans about polar bears and of their behavior could reduce the amount of unnecessary killing
(O'Neill, et al., 2008, p. 1657). Lastly, all experts recommended that polar bears should be
monitored and research should be conducted on polar bear populations in hope to conserve the
species from

Polar Bear Environmental Impact
Throughout history, humans have modified their environment to suit their needs, such as housing,
agriculture, and industry, but we are now seeing major changes to the environment on a scale not
witnessed before. The greenhouse effect has run rampant through man's use of fossil fuels and is
causing major changes to the planet, many unseen by people not directly affected. Human overuse
of dirty energies that produce CO2 has led to shrinking Arctic ice and warmer temperatures that
cause disruption for the animals and people who live there. Glaciers, in places such as Iceland and
Canada, and the Arctic ice sheet are melting, breeding seasons are changing, and people and animals
are being displaced (Greene et. al., 2008). Some changes have been ... Show more content on

The frequency of long distance swims in the polar bear population is increasing, beginning in late
spring as the sea ice starts melting, when the bears migrate from the sea ice to land or offshore pack
ice (Pilfold et. al. 2017). Warmer temperatures are causing ice to become much thinner and more
mobile. "Instead of walking on a consolidated sea ice surface, polar bears may be forced to
undertake long distance swims to complete their migratory route (Pilfold et. al. :190, 2017)." Since
polar bears are not pack animals, the effects of climate change on migratory behavior can vary
greatly between individual, and, therefore, this study compares male and female adults and male and
female subadults. Subadults of both sexes swam as much as an adult female did, but adult females
with cubs were less likely to swim than the other age classes (Pilfold et. al. 2017). The swims are
also made in correlation to the ice; there is a positive relation in the distance of the ice from land and
the rate in which it retreated with the frequency of swims. Most swims were made before the ice had
reached its minimum, and when it expands again, the bears track its movement toward the
continental shelf (Pilfold et. al.

How Do Humans Affect Polar Bears
The Polar bear lives in the artic and uses the area's costal waters and ice sheets. They are well
equipped to live in this environment because they have a thick coat which serves as an insulator.
They mainly prey on seals but have also been known to consume dead whales. They can grow to be
7.25 to 8 feet tall and can weigh around 900 to 1,600 pounds. Polar bears are a keystone species, if
their numbers decrease there is a possibility that the seal populations will increase which could be
devastating for crustaceans and fish. They help keep populations in balance. Global Warming is an
ongoing problem in the world which causes the average global temperature to increase near the
earth surface. This has affected many animals, especially the polar

Do Bears Are Prosperous Animals: Do They Hibernate?
Bears are wonderful animals because they can pull off eating for 10 people in the summer and fall to
go and hibernate during the winter, but the big debate is whether bears really do hibernate or do they
just sit around in their den all winter. Some people might say that bears don't hibernate; however, I
think otherwise I believe that bears do hibernate.
Firstly, I know that bears hibernate because in the winter their core body temperature goes down
significantly, then when they're not hibernating.According to Stephanie, a bear expert, while the
bears are regularly sleeping their temperature drops.I know this because in the graph it shows us the
body temperatures of three bears, in these three bears the first one stood out because it had the

Essay about Melting Ice Caps
Melting Ice Caps The Arctic is global warming's canary in the coal mine. It is a highly sensitive area
which is profoundly affected by the changing climate. The average temperature in the Arctic is
rising twice as fast as elsewhere in the world (nrdc.org). Because of this, the ice cap is getting
thinner, melting away, and rupturing. Here is an example of this; the largest ice block in the Arctic,
the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf, had been around for 3000 years before it started cracking in 2000
(nrdc.org) By 2002, the Ward Hunt has cracked completely through and had started breaking into
smaller pieces. The melting ice caps are affecting the earth and its inhabitants in many ways. In this
paper, the following concepts and subjects will be ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Generations before us did not take this measure, but maybe our generation should. The melting ice
caps are having a dramatic affect on the polar regions of the earth. For example, the average
temperature in the Arctic is rising twice as fast than the rest of the world (nrdc.org). The once
prominent ice is now melting at a dramatic speed, which is affecting native people, wildlife, and
plants. When the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf splintered, the freshwater lake that it surrounded drained into
the ocean, along with the ecosystem that inhabited it. Polar bears, whales, walrus and seals are
changing their feeding and migration patterns, making it harder for native people to hunt them
(nrdc.org). Because of the flooding, entire villages will be uprooted order to avoid being swamped.
Also, the Arctic coastlines are beginning to move as well. The melting ice caps are threatening the
native peoples' cultural identity and their very survival. Ice–dependant animals, such as walruses
and ring seals will be greatly affected by the melting ice caps (treehugger.com). They have fewer
places to rest on, as well as fewer places to hunt. If the ice caps keep melting, their lives will
become in great danger. The melting ice caps are not only affecting the Polar Regions, but they are
also affecting the rest of the world as well in the form of rising ocean levels. Melting ice caps are
contributing to rising ocean levels as well.

A Story Of Microevolution: Polar Bears Without Polar Caps
A Story of Microevolution: Polar Bears Without Polar Caps There are not many creatures in the
world that have the ability to not only survive thirty–two degrees below zero temperatures, but live
in this climate as well. Among penguins and seals, polar bears are apart of the group of creatures
that live everyday life in these freezing conditions. However, polar bears were not always able to do
this. According to the Public Broadcast Service (PBS) website, polar bears evolved from brown
bears through microevolution. Microevolution, by definition, is "small–scale evolution that occurs
from one generation to the next" (Larsen p. A15). Due to the discovery of fossils, it is believed that
brown bears evolved into polar bears between 70,000 to 100,000 years ago. This evolution can be
seen by the change of fur color from brown to white to blend in while hunting for food and by the
growth of a thicker, warmer coat to protect against the cold temperatures (PBS). This all occurred
because of an event called the "ice age". However, in the year 2316, an event called "global
warming" will cause a much different evolution. Global warming is a phrase used to describe the
ongoing, subtle rise in temperature of the earth and it's oceans. Because of the small efforts being
made to slow down global warming, nearly all of the ice caps in the ocean will most likely be
melted by the year 2316. With polar bears only being able to survive by living on polar ... Show

An Analysis Of Stephen Pax Leonard's So You Think They Can...
How many ways of referring to ice exist in the language used by the Polar Eskimos? The answer
may surprise since compared to the dominant languages, in which the concept of ice is described by
a single word, the Polar Eskimos have more than twenty times that number. Despite apparent
uniqueness of this language, it is likely that no one will use in a relatively short time as globalization
whips out minority languages leaving only a few with a chance to survive. In the essay, "Death by
Monoculture," Stephen Pax Leonard argues that this deprivation in the realm of languages is going
to lead to a "dull" world (Leonard 148). In contrast, Jeff Chang, an author of "So You Think They

Polar Bears : Climate Change
Polar Bears rely upon sea ice for survival. They hunt on seals that are found on sea ice. Climate
change and the atmospheric warming have caused the Arctic ice to melt, resulting in loss of habitats
for polar bears. This essay will focus on how has climate change and increase in temperature
affected the polar bears and what can we do about it.
INTRODUCTION
In everyday news, there is always that one article that talks about how climate changes are scary and
how it is affecting all of us. Some of us read it carefully and some of us just do not care. But it is a
global issue that humans need to come together and think about. Throughout the history of human
evolution, many revolutions have occurred (e.g. industrial revolution). Inventions of complex
technologies and industries have caused pollution through the emissions of many greenhouse gases.
One of the main climate change, increasing the temperature of the environment, is global warming.
An increasing greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation and rapid burning of fossil fuels are
continually causing the warming of the climate. The sunlight is the main source of energy on the
planet but when greenhouse gases increase in the environment, it traps the heat radiating from earth
toward space, causing the global warming. This "greenhouse effect" not only affects the plants but
also animals including humans. Polar bear is one of those animal species that has been affected very
much from this warming of the weather. Polar bears live

Geopolitics Of Melting Ice Essay
A research scientist stands on a sheet of ice. He looks right, then left, more ice. Off in the distance
are mountains of ice. There are open patches of water in the middle of this great land of ice
reflecting the vibrant and glowing sun. Waiting with patience around one patch is a polar bear, white
and skinny. Skinny, as the polar bear has not eaten in days. It stands watch with hopeful eyes that a
big, juicy seal will pop its head out just enough to get a bite and haul the seal on shore to feed itself
and the bear's two cubs. This area is known as the arctic, and it is home to many animals, such as the
polar bear, but they are in danger of losing their home due to the melting ice caps. At the beginning
of the article "The geopolitics of Arctic melt", Charles K. Ebinger, the director of the Energy
Security and Climate Initiative at Brookings Institution, as well as Evie Zambetakis, a Senior
Research Assistant at Brookings Institute in 2009, asserts their credence of how the thawing Arctic,
due to Global warming, increased the interest of the area worldwide. ... Show more content on

Aspects Of Arctic Sovereignty
Environmental Aspects of Arctic Sovereignty 1. Introduction The Arctic has the world's largest
unused source of oil and it is getting international attention because of its extremely value resources
(Crawford, Hanson & Runnalls, 2008). According to Digman (2011) the Arctic's commercial interest
mostly rely on drilling, mining and transportation development. However, Arctic's development not
only will lead to economical profits but also will bring international conflicts. Due to this, a
Sovereignty by the five Arctic's coastal countries such as Canada, Denmark, Norway, Russia and
United States is essential. Moreover, Arctic's climate change is happening right now due to human
induced factors (Isted, 2009) and Arctic's development will lead to environmental damage
(Johnston, 2012). The effects of this combination will have significant global consequences and
could end in an environmental catastrophe (Crawford et al., 2008). The purpose of this report is to
discuss the Arctic's resources and developments as well as the environmental impacts of the Arctic's
development and climate change. In addition, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ...
Digman (2011) concludes that melting permafrost will release a large volume of carbon to the sea
water; this will directly impact Arctic's fauna and flora. As a result, animal's distribution, range and

However, regardless of this situation, economic activities are increasing due to global warming
(Isted, 2009) because some countries consider the Arctic's melting ice an development opportunity
(Smith, 2010). Therefore, Crawford et al. (2008) argue that "changing climate is making Arctic
sovereignty a more pressing and consequential issue" and strategies are needed for the Arctic's

Impacts of Climate Change on Biodiversity in Northern Canada
Topic: impacts of climate change on biodiversity in Northern Canada
Climate change, as a change in weather like global warming, has attracted the attention of the
public. The issue of climate change has been becoming a global focus of attention for people around
the world. Most scientists think that climate change is primarily caused by human activities.
Temperature and precipitation shifts directly affect biota, and scientists think that as the climate
continues to change, the biodiversity in Northern Canada is particularly at risk. Because global
warming can result in the decreasing of marine, freshwater and terrestrial communities, climate
change has negative influences on biodiversity in Northern Canada. In order to conserve the ...

As a result, the biodiversity of freshwater species is seriously affected by climate change.
Not only the marine environment and the freshwater communities, but the terrestrial species are also
impacted by climate change. The number of plant species has been decreasing. Prowse et. al,
(2009b, p.284) report that temperature and precipitation change will lead to the change in the
composition of flora communities, and this can result in the loss of plant species. Also, Lemieux
& Scott (2005, p.393) state that there is a wide decline in the taiga biome, thus, the global
warming directly impact the biodiversity of plant species. Climate change can also influence the
birds ' growth rate as well. Lower birds ' growth rates and adult body mass occurred in the north
(Prowse et. al, 2009b, p.286). Additionally, the caribou activities are threatened by climate change as
well. According to the report from Prowse et. al. (2009b, p.285), owing to global warming, the
incidence of parasitic infection happens more frequently and the forage has been decreasing in
winter; these trends result in the decline in numbers of caribou. Moreover, the impact of climate
change on the permafrost seems to be serious. Discontinuous permafrost will disappear at the
southern boundaries of these permafrost zones, and the continuous permafrost will degrade to the
discontinuous permanent; that can result in some lakes and wetlands turning to drain (Prowse et. al,
2009a, p.268). The

Cause And Effect Of The Arctic Sea Ice
People know that "Human–driven climate change" (Fiona Harvey, November 25, 2017) has become
an international issue which has triggered to warm air temperature. The Arctic, the regions around
the North Pole, has huge ice. Since the more the temperature rises, the more ice melt, climate
change and the ice melt have extremely a strong connection. Furthermore, a lot of species live below
the sea of the Arctic, also there are some people who place their home in this area. As a result,
global warming leads to the change of the Arctic sea ice condition which influences the environment
and the people of the Arctic.
Arctic sea ice has responsibility for stopping the rise of temperature on the earth; however, the
expanse of the ice has been decreasing. Arctic sea ice has a significant element on the earth. The ice
plays a role of lowering the sea and air temperature like "air conditioner" (Stevens, F. 2016) by
reflecting the heat of the sun back to the universe. This means the ice has the ability of regulating
heat. However, the "air conditioner" has not been working as much as people expect. According to
Science Daily, the amount of the Arctic sea ice in 2017 has gotten smaller, 7 million square
kilometers in 1970s and 1980s to 4.7 million square kilometers, and the ice thickness has decreased
thirty percent compared to between 2001 and 2004 (Alfred Wegener Institute, September 15, 2017).
The reduction of the ice extent causes not to fulfill a function as the "air conditioner" In

Similarities Between Finland And The Usa
Finland and the USA have rather different animals from each other. Finland also has colder climate
animals than the USA. First of all, Finland has wolverines. Wolverines are Europe's most rarest and
largest carnivores. Finland is home to about 150–170 wolverines. However, the USA does not have
this animals except in Alaska. The main reason of this is probably because of the fact that
wolverines are very well adapted to northern climates. Wolverines can also move effortlessly
through deep snow, so they are obviously built for snowy and cold climates. This is therefore a great
reason for them to be found in Alaska. With that being said, even though that wolverines can be

Kemode Bear Research Paper

  • 1. Kemode Bear Research Paper Logan#8 Spirit bear(Kermode Bear) Kermode bears today are very rare to find. Human Beings are going out to find a Kermode bear you will probably not find one. However, these bears are really rare off the coast of the Princess Royal and Gribbell island. Nearly 100 black, white bears exist on this big and beautiful world. This type of bears are nearly extinct, Because people try to hunt the extinct animals. Black white bears have a rare double recessive gene in it's body. This is how people have the white and black fur. When 2 parents have the same recessive gene the result is white fur for their young. A lot people think that these bears are Polar Bears or even Albino's, but they are just Kermode Bears. Twenty percent of the bears on the coast of the Princess Royal, ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... It was a Kermode bear. You aren't allowed to hunt them, just allowed to see. 200 miles northwest of Orr, Minnesota a black, white bear was also found. When they found the bear genetics were never studied. To this day they still haven't studied the black, white bear's genetics. Then another Kermode bear was found in 2004 300 miles northwest of Beausejour near Cedar Lake, Manitoba. This cub was named Maskwa, also it also carried the same genetics that black, white bears have to this day. So to this day there are less than 100 Kermode bears alive and wealthy on this humble earth. Scientist have also figured out many reasons why Kermode bears are dying out, is because they use them for fur and a coat which is really bad because humans also are allergic or can't have them because of other reasons. Why is the fur of the Kermode bear always black white type? Use cite evidence to support your answer. Where does the Kermode bear originally come from and where at in that area? Use both Cite's to answer the Question. What is the average percentage for the Kermode bear in the Gribbell island and Royal Princess? Cite your answer with ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 5. Snowshoe Hare Research Paper The snowshoe hare is an important consumer in the ANWR food chain. Without it, top predators such as the brown bear would lack an important food source. The snowshoe hare is an herbivore. Like all herbivores, it eats only plants. Some plants that the snowshoe hare eats are the reindeer lichen, the arctic willow, and the arctic sedge. In the ANWR, it is important that the snowshoe hare has useful adaptations since it lives in the tundra, one of the world's toughest biomes to survive in. Its signature adaptation is its ability to change color. During the winter, its coat is white as snow, which helps it blend in with its tundra habitat. During the spring and summer, its fur changes reddish–brown, which helps it blend with the dirt and mud that is common in the tundra during and after the period ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Toxic chemicals caused by pollution may harm or kill the snowshoe hare. The snowshoe hare may develop chronic respiratory diseases or lung cancer. This is also a threat for the snowshoe hare's predators as well since toxic chemicals built up in the snowshoe hare may render the snowshoe hare unsafe to eat. Freshwater may also be poisoned by the toxins, which the snowshoe hare needs. Regulations may or may not be established to protect the snowshoe hare if oil drilling is established. The snowshoe hare will most certainly be protected if the oil drilling plan is canceled. The snowshoe hare needs protection due to its sheer importance in the ecosystem's food web. Humans, by oil drilling, will negatively impact not only the snowshoe hare, but one of the world's greatest arctic wildlife reserves. Protecting the snowshoe hare will also increase biodiversity in the ecosystem. Humanity should be careful about fossil fuel exploration and not squander its precious wildlife refuges. By doing this, it can ensure that ANWR– and its unique snowshoe hare– lives on for future ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The black bear is the smallest, most common bear in North America. There colours vary between black, brown and blonde. They are omnivores and up to 85% of their diet is vegetation. Black Bears are not hibernators, but they do become a lot less active and go into a dormant state during the winter months. This is referred to Seasonal Lethargy. Black bears enter their dens in October and November. Before to that time, they can put on up to 30 pounds of body fat to get them through the seven months during which they fast. • 13. The Negative Effects Of Oil Drilling As polar ice in the Arctic region melts, there are many implications associated with it. The melting ice opens up sea lanes, providing access to priceless natural resources, such as the estimated 90 billion barrels of the world's undiscovered oil (Karaim 336). For the United States, this is a great opportunity. Access to these energy reserves would open up expansion of the oil industry, which advocates of oil drilling say will lead to extensive economic development (Karaim 335) in northern Alaska and the rest of the Arctic region. However, scientists caution that an increase in oil drilling will have destructive effects on the environment. Increased greenhouse gas pollution from oil drilling facilitate global warming, which will melt even more polar ice, absorbing more sunlight and harming vivid Arctic ecosystems. The higher risk for oil spills will harm marine wildlife, which translates to harming the indigenous Arctic peoples. Their diets will be altered, new diseases will be introduced, and the changing of the Arctic land will restrict their rich cultural traditions and lifestyles. Although oil drilling will facilitate economic development in the Arctic, it should not be continued because its implementation is not sustainable for the environment, nor does it improve the lifestyles of the indigenous Arctic peoples. One concern that scientists have regarding oil drilling in the Arctic is the perpetuation of climate change that comes along with it. Expansion of the oil ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 17. Global Warming Should Be The Paramount Struggle Of Our Time It is often said that humans are the largest threat to Earth, but not because of violence between one another. Humans are the largest threat to Earth because we as a species pollute the air, land, and water of the very planet we call home. Without Earth all life as we know it will cease to exist. Global warming is the product of the pollutants created by mankind. If mankind as a whole does not change its ways we will ruin our one and only planet that is suitable to sustain life. In Warm, Warmer, Warmest an article by Nicholas D. Kristof argues that that "stopping global warming should be the paramount struggle of our time"(Warmer). While researching this topic I used multiple resources to better understand what Nicholas Kristof is explaining in his article. I first looked at a government run website that helped explain global warming and how it is affecting us today. Then I looked at news articles from different news organizations. Lastly I watched a video that explained why we can no longer ignore global warming. All of those resources helped me better understand my research topic and I feel that I have gained more knowledge about global warming. Warm, Warmer, Warmest is an article written by Nicholas D. Kristof that states that global warming is the biggest problem humans face today. Warm, Warmer, Warmest an article in the book Science and Society by Nicholas D. • 21. Polar Ice Caps Melting In this essay I express how the melting of the polar ice caps in the North Pole is affecting the survival of habitats of organisms around the world. The common misconception is that only polar bears are suffering from global warming. Because of rapid climate change in multiple areas around the globe, many organisms are unable to live in their normal habitat. They are unable to adapt to these new conditions as fast as they are changing. There are many effects of global warming that is affecting the livelihood of many animals and in this essay I will explain how the effects are hurting the earth's population of animals. What is Global Warming? Global warming is a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth's atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants. The Green House Effect is the process in which the absorption and emission of infrared radiation by gases in the atmosphere warm a planet's lower atmosphere and surface. These greenhouse gases traps some of the heat emitted by the Earth. The problem with global warming is that is an anthropomorphic problem. The human race is polluting and misusing our earth. The people here on earth have substantially increased the quantity of CO2 in the atmosphere. This is a result of burning fossil fuels, coal, oil and gas emissions from automobiles. The quantity of CO2 36%is higher than in preindustrial times. The more ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

  • 25. Decision Making On Black Carbon Mitigation Decision–Making on Black Carbon Mitigation Introduction There have been myriad of findings over the past couple of years suggesting that climate change may be happening far faster than we originally anticipated. Climate change has the potential to trigger abrupt transitions such as the release of carbon from thawing permafrost, ocean acidification, sea level rise, and biodiversity loss. The world has warmed by about 1.5°F, and by 2100 it is projected to rise another 2 to 11.5°F (Karl et al., 2009). Scientists conclude that greenhouse gases (GHG) from anthropogenic sources are the most significant driver of observed climate change (IPCC 2013). GHG have the property of absorbing the infrared radiation given off by the Earth and re–emitting ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... BC has a short atmospheric residence time of days to weeks, while long‐lived GHGs can persist in the atmosphere for centuries. Therefore, reductions in GHG emissions will take longer to influence atmospheric concentrations and will have less impact on climate on a short timescale, whereas reductions in current BC emissions are immediate (Bice et al., 2009). Apart from that, some scientists (Shindell & Faluvegi 2009, Ramanathan & Feng 2009, Quinn et al. 2008, Jacobson 2010) attribute up to 50% of arctic ice melting to BC emissions, therefore its emissions reductions can substantially decrease the rate at which arctic ice is melting. Thus, initiatives focused on lowering BC will help offset the impact of decades of GHG emissions and give efforts to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions time to get off the ground. It's worth mentioning that BC also has adverse effect on human health, such as premature mortality, cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, and development of chronic respiratory disease, so targeting BC emissions will be beneficial from the public health standpoint (EPA 2011). Bringing black carbon into climate strategy offers a complementary route to act on climate change, but the scientific understanding of black carbon climate effects isn't fully complete to support this proposition. On the one hand, there's a group of scientists who conclude that BC is one of the most important human emission in terms of its climate forcing in current atmosphere, as it ... Scientist who believe global warming is real, their predictions about it have been proven wrong. Some scientist predicted that the temperature would increase dramatically, but the temperature has stayed the same ever since. I am against global warming because I don't think global warming exist. • 41. Sea Ice: Important To The Environment Have you ever wondered what some animals call home? If so, then the Sea Ice is the place to begin. Researches have classified the ice into two categories: the Arctic section, and the Antarctic section. The Arctic side is on an ocean, that is mostly surrounded by land. On the other side, the Arctic Side, it is in the ocean surrounded by the land, but controls the "coldest darkest part of the Northern Hemisphere." (P.12). Sea ice is important to the environment; it is important to the environment because it releases nutrients into the water for animals to eat, is home to many species of animals, and it creates a cap that keeps water from evaporating. In summer, the sea ice will partially melt. When this partial melt occurs "the ice releases ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... When this partial melt occurs "the ice releases nutrients that some animals eat" (P.3). The nutrients are the main food basis for the animals that call the ice home. The fauna, an animal that currently resides in the sea ice, that eat these nutrients that are mainly pelagic life to them. Therefore, the nutrients that the sea ice releases are very important to their everyday life, along with the other creatures that reside there. Along with the fauna mentioned above, there are multiple types of animals that call the sea ice their home. "The ice itself is also home of animals like seals, arctic foxes, polar bears and penguins." (P.3). If taken into consideration, the sea ice is a highly beneficial place to live in for these creatures; it provides shelter and food for the exotic animals. This shows that many different types of animals live on the ice. Therefore, the sea ice is important to the environment. "Sea ice also creates a cap on the ocean. This cap helps keep water from evaporating into the atmosphere." (P.2). The weather takes the hit for this cap and becomes colder and drier in the iced–covered areas. This cap, also prevents the water's heat from escaping, and being released into the air, thus adding to global ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

Polar bears are entirely dependent on ice to live and hunt. Regional temperatures effect when the ice breaks up and when it forms. Due to a rise of temperature in the arctic regions, ice forms later, melts earlier and has a decreasing amount every year. In the "Environment: Trends" section of the National Snow & Ice Data Center website, the author states that, "Arctic ice has been decreasing at an average rate of about 3 percent per decade..." This means that polar bears have to either move further north to the ice that doesn't melt, or move to land. Either way the polar bear may have to starve until a ... According to Forcada and Trathan (2009, p.1), "Penguins are adapted to live in extreme environments, but they can be highly sensitive to climate change, which disrupts penguin life history strategies when it alters the weather, oceanography and critical habitats." Chinstrap penguins mainly live on the Antarctic Peninsula, where climate change has hit the continent the hardest. (Barbosa, Benzal, León, & Moreno 2012 p.1) Unlike the polar bear, the penguin does not have the luxury of travelling between land and sea in search for a meal. Being a flightless bird, chinstrap penguins live on the ice and hunt in the waters off the coast of the Antarctic Peninsula. The chinstrap penguins' main food source is a tiny crustacean named krill. Krill are also affected by ice melting earlier and forming late. When the temperatures increase, the food that krill feed upon die, phytoplankton, die at an increased rate. (Barbosa, et al., 2012 p.4) The krill population is also adversely affected by increased whale and seal activity. (Barbosa, et al., 2012 p.4) When less ice, higher temperatures, less food, and more competition add up, the chinstrap penguin suffers. • 49. Global Warming And Its Effects On The Planet Essay As Albert Einstein said "Look deep into nature and then you will understand everything better". It can be hard, but not impossible to understand more about this ever changing universe. Without a doubt, our planet as we know was not the same a century ago and it will not be the same a decade from now. Due to this perpetual evolution of our planet's natural cycles, its inhabitants are forced to choose between adaption or extinction. Meanwhile, an invasive species, or humans, has started a chain of disasters that are accelerating global changes and, in extension, the crucial selection of existence. Over the years, the field of natural science has increased human knowledge regarding our negative impact on the planet. Despite this, humans have taken minimal action towards addressing the problem that, considered a myth by some, is global warming. Many of us take our planet for granted, not realizing that, in of its own, it consist of one huge ecosystem relying on all of its parts to function properly. Because of this interdependence, action must be taken to minimize and raise awareness of global warming on the arctic region and its resulting effects on ecosystems around the world. Occurring on the entire planet, global warming affects individual regions at different intensity levels. Places covered in snow, like the Arctic, are being disturbed by the rising temperature, resulting in a decrease of ice and an increase of liquid water. To illustrate the immensity of this matter, ... The trees with the highest importance values will be those that exist in the greatest number or are of the greatest size. The importance value identifies the dominant species in a community that may have the greatest effect on the community, thus hinting at the physical structure of a plant community. Once the importance values are found, a community can be defined in terms of its most significant species. Within Dowell's Draft are eastern white pine–pignut hickory–Virginia pine communities while Chimney Hollow is comprised of eastern hemlock–white oak–eastern white pine communities. Eastern white ... Species richness is how many species are in a given area and species evenness looks at how equally abundant each of the species are (Stirling and Wisley, 2007). By determining species richness and evenness, we can compare biodiversity in different communities. Species richness was found by simply totaling the number of tree species. As species evenness takes into account the relative numbers of individuals of each species in a community as well as the number of species present, we calculated it by dividing Shannon's diversity index 'H' by the natural logarithm of species richness. As Dowell's Draft and Chimney Hollow vary greatly in microclimate most likely due to solar radiation, we expected Dowell's Draft to exhibit greater biodiversity than Chimney Hollow. At Dowell's Draft, the species richness is 9 and the species evenness is 0.9226 while in Chimney Hollow, the species richness is 5 and the species evenness is 0.8283. Thus, our hypothesis is correct; Dowell's Draft exhibited greater biodiversity than Chimney Hollow in both species richness and evenness. • 73. The Last Winter Film Analysis ABSTRACT Environmental change is a severe issue in the world as many parts of the world strive towards ensuring that the environment remains habitable and with minimal detrimental changes (Hamilton, 2011). Furthermore, environmental evolution is taught in most educational centers to ensure that people understand how to conserve the environment. However, many people perceive it as a dull subject and do not give it the attention it deserves; but this situation is changed by the number of movies, documentaries, movies and TV series that have been made to explain the dangers or benefits of environmental change more creatively. This study will seek to describe one such movie and discuss the different factors, assumptions, impacts, and scientific accuracies to the same regard. It will also put into consideration the truths, consequences, and facts that have been portrayed in the movie. The Last Winter, whose release was in 2007, is a movie that explains environmental changes based on global warming. Its effects and shall discuss it and try to understand the angle that the producer took in conveying the ecological change message as well as point out whether it provides a solution for the problem so discovered. In recent years, however, the polar bears have faced enormous challenges in arctic, where they have no natural enemy. It is well known that the normal temperature of human body is around 36.5 degree centigrade, sometimes, sudden illness causes a rise in body temperature. Every sudden increase in temperature of human body is a threat to human health. The same is happening with the global climate system. The Intergovernmental panel on Climate Change (IPCC) reports that since the industrial revolution, the average temperatures of Earth surface has risen by 0.6 degree centigrade (Lisa V. Alexander). Moreover, the rise in temperature is concentrated in recent decades, there has been an upward trend of about 0.2 degrees Celsius per decade. Polar bears are known as a keystone species, meaning they have significant effect on the environment in which they live. As such, keeping polar bears alive is essential for a balanced ecosystem in the Arctic Circle. One of the major threats to polar bears is melting sea ice. As the overall temperature of the earth increases due to global warming and the greenhouse effect, the sea ice that polar bears live on for most of their lives is melting. Polar bears require sea ice to survive, as it is their hunting grounds and habitat. When the ice melts, polar bears are forced to move closer to the pole. Unfortunately, polar bears use northern ... Polar bears are hunted for food, for their fur, for sport, and for traditional practices by Native people. According to Dr. Steven C. Polar bear hunting is currently managed in Greenland, Alaska, and Canada (Sahanatien, et al., 2012, p. 398). Another recommendation was to educate the natives on polar bears. Since polar bears are approaching human settlements, educating the humans about polar bears and of their behavior could reduce the amount of unnecessary killing (O'Neill, et al., 2008, p. 1657). Human overuse of dirty energies that produce CO2 has led to shrinking Arctic ice and warmer temperatures that cause disruption for the animals and people who live there. The frequency of long distance swims in the polar bear population is increasing, beginning in late spring as the sea ice starts melting, when the bears migrate from the sea ice to land or offshore pack ice (Pilfold et. al. 2017). Warmer temperatures are causing ice to become much thinner and more mobile. "Instead of walking on a consolidated sea ice surface, polar bears may be forced to undertake long distance swims to complete their migratory route (Pilfold et. al. :190, 2017)." Since polar bears are not pack animals, the effects of climate change on migratory behavior can vary greatly between individual, and, therefore, this study compares male and female adults and male and female subadults. Subadults of both sexes swam as much as an adult female did, but adult females with cubs were less likely to swim than the other age classes (Pilfold et. al. 2017). The swims are also made in correlation to the ice; there is a positive relation in the distance of the ice from land and the rate in which it retreated with the frequency of swims. Most swims were made before the ice had reached its minimum, and when it expands again, the bears track its movement toward the continental shelf (Pilfold et. al. ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

The average temperature in the Arctic is rising twice as fast as elsewhere in the world (nrdc.org). Because of this, the ice cap is getting thinner, melting away, and rupturing. Here is an example of this; the largest ice block in the Arctic, the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf, had been around for 3000 years before it started cracking in 2000 (nrdc.org) By 2002, the Ward Hunt has cracked completely through and had started breaking into smaller pieces. Generations before us did not take this measure, but maybe our generation should. The melting ice caps are having a dramatic affect on the polar regions of the earth. For example, the average temperature in the Arctic is rising twice as fast than the rest of the world (nrdc.org). The once prominent ice is now melting at a dramatic speed, which is affecting native people, wildlife, and plants. When the Ward Hunt Ice Shelf splintered, the freshwater lake that it surrounded drained into the ocean, along with the ecosystem that inhabited it. Polar bears, whales, walrus and seals are changing their feeding and migration patterns, making it harder for native people to hunt them (nrdc.org). Because of the flooding, entire villages will be uprooted order to avoid being swamped. Also, the Arctic coastlines are beginning to move as well. The melting ice caps are threatening the native peoples' cultural identity and their very survival. Ice–dependant animals, such as walruses and ring seals will be greatly affected by the melting ice caps (treehugger.com). They have fewer places to rest on, as well as fewer places to hunt. A Story Of Microevolution: Polar Bears Without Polar Caps A Story of Microevolution: Polar Bears Without Polar Caps There are not many creatures in the world that have the ability to not only survive thirty–two degrees below zero temperatures, but live in this climate as well. Among penguins and seals, polar bears are apart of the group of creatures that live everyday life in these freezing conditions. However, polar bears were not always able to do this. According to the Public Broadcast Service (PBS) website, polar bears evolved from brown bears through microevolution. Microevolution, by definition, is "small–scale evolution that occurs from one generation to the next" (Larsen p. A15). Due to the discovery of fossils, it is believed that brown bears evolved into polar bears between 70,000 to 100,000 years ago. This evolution can be seen by the change of fur color from brown to white to blend in while hunting for food and by the growth of a thicker, warmer coat to protect against the cold temperatures (PBS). This all occurred because of an event called the "ice age". However, in the year 2316, an event called "global warming" will cause a much different evolution. Global warming is a phrase used to describe the ongoing, subtle rise in temperature of the earth and it's oceans. Climate change and the atmospheric warming have caused the Arctic ice to melt, resulting in loss of habitats for polar bears. This essay will focus on how has climate change and increase in temperature affected the polar bears and what can we do about it. INTRODUCTION In everyday news, there is always that one article that talks about how climate changes are scary and how it is affecting all of us. Some of us read it carefully and some of us just do not care. But it is a global issue that humans need to come together and think about. Throughout the history of human evolution, many revolutions have occurred (e.g. industrial revolution). Inventions of complex technologies and industries have caused pollution through the emissions of many greenhouse gases. One of the main climate change, increasing the temperature of the environment, is global warming. An increasing greenhouse gas emissions, deforestation and rapid burning of fossil fuels are continually causing the warming of the climate. The sunlight is the main source of energy on the planet but when greenhouse gases increase in the environment, it traps the heat radiating from earth toward space, causing the global warming. This "greenhouse effect" not only affects the plants but also animals including humans. Polar bear is one of those animal species that has been affected very much from this warming of the weather. Introduction The Arctic has the world's largest unused source of oil and it is getting international attention because of its extremely value resources (Crawford, Hanson & Runnalls, 2008). According to Digman (2011) the Arctic's commercial interest mostly rely on drilling, mining and transportation development. However, Arctic's development not only will lead to economical profits but also will bring international conflicts. Due to this, a Sovereignty by the five Arctic's coastal countries such as Canada, Denmark, Norway, Russia and United States is essential. Moreover, Arctic's climate change is happening right now due to human induced factors (Isted, 2009) and Arctic's development will lead to environmental damage (Johnston, 2012). The effects of this combination will have significant global consequences and could end in an environmental catastrophe (Crawford et al., 2008). Also, Lemieux & Scott (2005, p.393) state that there is a wide decline in the taiga biome, thus, the global warming directly impact the biodiversity of plant species. Climate change can also influence the birds ' growth rate as well. Lower birds ' growth rates and adult body mass occurred in the north (Prowse et. al, 2009b, p.286). Furthermore, a lot of species live below the sea of the Arctic, also there are some people who place their home in this area. As a result, global warming leads to the change of the Arctic sea ice condition which influences the environment and the people of the Arctic. Arctic sea ice has responsibility for stopping the rise of temperature on the earth; however, the expanse of the ice has been decreasing. Arctic sea ice has a significant element on the earth. The ice plays a role of lowering the sea and air temperature like "air conditioner" (Stevens, F. 2016) by reflecting the heat of the sun back to the universe. This means the ice has the ability of regulating heat. However, the "air conditioner" has not been working as much as people expect. According to Science Daily, the amount of the Arctic sea ice in 2017 has gotten smaller, 7 million square kilometers in 1970s and 1980s to 4.7 million square kilometers, and the ice thickness has decreased thirty percent compared to between 2001 and 2004 (Alfred Wegener Institute, September 15, 2017). The reduction of the ice extent causes not to fulfill a function as the "air conditioner" In ... Get more on HelpWriting.net ...

First of all, Finland has wolverines. Wolverines are Europe's most rarest and largest carnivores. Finland is home to about 150–170 wolverines. However, the USA does not have this animals except in Alaska. The main reason of this is probably because of the fact that wolverines are very well adapted to northern climates. Wolverines can also move effortlessly through deep snow, so they are obviously built for snowy and cold climates. This is therefore a great reason for them to be found in Alaska. With that being said, even though that wolverines can be found in one of the USA's states, Alaska, it can't be found in it's ... Show more content on Helpwriting.net ... Finland has Finnish sisu for winter, 5 day hike in Lapland, strange nature sites, and so many more. The USA has more common activities like in winter with, snowboarding, skating, skiing, and others. In Finland you can also paddle the Grand Lake Saimaa, do the cycle of the Archipelago Trail, and many others. The USA does have Yellowstone National Park, the Grand Canyon National Park, Zion National Park, and several more, but none of them are more unique than in Finland.
