"persons with disabilities" did not belong together. If a person was born with a physical or
intellectual disability, sports fell into the group of activities that were excluded from their life. If an
athlete acquired a physical or intellectual disability, sports became an activity they could no longer
participate in. Sports and athletic pursuits belonged solely to non–disabled persons. Persons with
disabilities could only watch from the sidelines. Our society did not encourage or support any

Slowly, a cultural shift has altered our perception of what is possible for persons with disabilities.
Part of this shift can be attributed to the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960's. Once the Civil Rights
Act was signed into law, the walls of discrimination and segregation began to crumble. Although the
Civil Rights Act initially sought to ensure equality for African Americans and other people of color,
it eventually expanded to protect other vulnerable classes in our society.1 A piece of legislation that
has contributed greatly to the rights of those with disabilities is the Americans with Disabilities Act
of 1990. This legislation is considered as far reaching and important as the Civil Rights Act. The

My gut reaction to hearing a film about wheelchair rugby was one of pity. I thought that as soon as I
saw the players I would feel sorry for them not being able to play the sport the "right" way, or the

Throughout my research of disabled veterans and their participation in recreation and sport
programs, I have found some of the issues that needs to be addressed. One of them was mentioned
by F. Ostovary and J. Dapprich who addressed challenges facing while transitioning into learning
and work places. One of the bigger problems that veterans have to face is our society's
misunderstanding of military impact on human. Society lacks knowledge of different symptoms that
veterans may struggle with and is quick to judge. (Hall, 2011) addressed this problem and stated that
those symptoms sometimes are viewed as odd and inappropriate behaviors by the general public,
and can be viewed as weakness by the veterans themselves. Individual pride or stigma for having
any of the mental health issues or diagnosis, and the enhanced emotional suppression of the military
culture often leads to increased isolation or depression. This issue is affecting veterans in not
participating in any recreation programs or team sport activities. Some of the veterans tend to ignore
the first symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder because of the social stigma that comes with it. It

68% of wheelchair rugby participants have a spinal cord injury, compared 6% with cerebral palsy

Being a student–athlete is even more demanding. The distance that people with disabilities have to
go to practice, train, go to class & utilize DRES is ridiculous. The locations of these areas are not
close in proximity. Wheelchair athlete should be able to have their own facility in which they can
operate efficiently and effectively. In athletics, athletes should be compensated for the hard work
that they put in. Even as a walk–on athlete for a DIA recognized team, there are my added benefits.
When the quality of life for wheelchair athletes increases, we will be able to recruit better athletes
and place the University of Illinois ahead every other program in the nation. After conducting

The Paralympic athlete I choose to research was Jessica Long. I chose her because according to her
biography on the U.S. Paralympic athlete website, she "learned how to swim in her grandparents'
pool where she would spend hours pretending she was a mermaid." Ms. Long has been competing in
swimming competitions since she was ten, but her career as a Paralympic athlete didn't start until the
age of twelve when she competed in the Athens 2004 Games and won three gold medals (U.S.
Paralympics). Now, at the age of twenty–three, she is still a swimmer in the United States'
Paralympic swimming team. Adopted from Russia as a baby, Ms. Long resides in the United States
in Colorado Springs, Colorado. She was born with a condition called fibular hemimelia, meaning
she did not have fibulas, ankles, heels and most of the other bones in her feet. This eventually led to

Not only do they face extra challenges in order to function in society, but they also have to face their
own inner doubts about keeping up with their peers. When Ms. Long spoke about wanting to keep
up with her peers in the interview with PBS, it showed me how motivated and positive people with
disabilities have to stay while trying to reach their goals. Unfortunately, today's society still has
some negative stigmas towards people who have disabilities. The Paralympic games impact the
